Part of the [PORT] mystical tour – “Marilee Mangletooth.” What main?
Something something Autechre fanatic.
getting temporary normal pacing until sudden major lag, to the point my modem/router resets. possibly related to general lag as level3 (main pathing via tracert) is under abnormal stress. isp has no tickets for the area.
I can vouch for shroud not activating “on swap” sigils for the purpose that being ‘in shroud’ is an entirely different mechanic than a simple weapon swap.
That being said here’s what does count as criteria for “on swap”:
>For two-set profs (all but elementalist and engineer), you need at least one thing in your off to swap to, e.g. your mesmer with sword/shield on main, but an off-hand focus on swap. That counts for criteria.
>For elementalist, switching attunements counts as criteria. Mind the cooldown.
>For engineer… does this count when switching to a kit? Needs validation.
I personally went with asura for the technomagical aspect of it, but I can’t really argue with your decision to use a charr. In fact, I think a charr would be perfect to hold the engi profession (remember the Iron Legion?), utility and mobility go hand in hand.
But then again, sometimes when my asura gets her weapon out she does tend to shout, “I majored in pain, with a minor in suffering”. (But that’s regardless of class.)
Think you made a decent choice with a charr though; some would beg to differ.
If you’re going to be put up against enemies that inflict damaging conditions there’s a good chance that Shield Stance won’t help, especially if they come in the form of AoE. You might want to use a skill that applies resistance to you to render any condition on you temporarily ineffective (esp. if you’re already hit with them) — or switch to Mending which takes 3 of them off while healing you.
I would weigh to Mending if the conditions are particularly lengthy, but some foods can be made that can cut down the length of incoming conditions.
Adding on to what Just a flesh wound said, when you use your Level 80 boost you’ll be taken to a trial moment. What you currently have will be packed. You can determine if that’s the class you really want to use it on. If you don’t like it, you can always speak to the guy and have him revert you. Only when you say you’re sure you want this character boosted during the trial will it be permanent.
The shared slot the booster comes in is permanent, too – but not the focus of this topic. Have you considered using a necromancer? That class has three setups permitting range (axe main, scepter main, staff) but in order to be distance-viable you’ll have to wait until utilities unlock at 11, where you can summon minions.
Elementalist can seem daunting, but you’re not being forced to manipulate all of the elements at once. And the way the elementalist is based on, I wouldn’t call that a caster per se. Just a ranged class with style. Staff-based eles have excellent uility not just for solo but also group PvE, even more so when Tempest becomes available.
As for engineers: kits, kits, kits. Did I mention kits? Flamethrower, grenades, mortars will swap that rifle of yours for something a little more useful.
Don’t be afraid to experiment, above all else. You don’t know what you’ll like until you try it.
As you head down the pathway leading to the Source of the Priory HP, approach the grating to the left of that HP. You should get a prompt asking if you want to go to the Durmand Priory instance.
There’s a function in the Achievement tab in the Hero Panel, where you can hover over your total achievement point count. It divides the AP into sections, including the amount gained by daily completionist. I just stumbled upon it; hopefully this might be useful to you.
(Note you must hover over the total at the Achievement tab in the Hero Panel and not the Character Select Screen.)
The white-ish stain could be the thermal paste. But if your CPU isn’t overheating, then as Nordom pointed out your next step on the list would be to test the memory. Programs such as memtest86 would be worthwhile, however in order to get results you might not be using the computer for the duration of the test.
Previous reply discarded, I agree it could be a case of dust buildup, but it could also be the case of outdated components. Excess dust can cause certain components to not disperse heat optimally. What the OP described is a classic example of such overheating.
Not only dusty components, but components that fall below minimum requirements. Excess strain can cause overheating even on a well-maintained machine. And while upgrading can be a little wrenching, even in less-than-inevitable situations it’ll help not just being able to play the game, but even presenting it nicely.
Seeing you can play Overwatch, I wager the problem might be either dusty components or faulty cooling mechanism at the CPU as the scenario described most certainly sounds like an overheated processor.
The 15,000 point cap also includes the no longer available monthly achievements. Perhaps those combined with your daily points have put you at the cap.
I overlooked that. Thank you for clarifying, and yes the now-defunct monthly AP gets added towards the daily AP cap — according to Wiki.
Thank you for joining us in the world of Tyria!
That being said, there are numerous resources available on the Guild Wars 2 Wiki, which is run by the players of Guild Wars 2. You can call the Wiki itself inside GW2 using /wiki.
If you’re looking for something specific, e..g. info on Warrior, you could use “/wiki Warrior” to get that page (or a search result on the Wiki) on your browser.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure of something. Peruse this subforum, and someone (including me) will help answer.
First: take your time. Learn what your character can do with weapons. Learn which weapons your character can actually use. This can be found in the Hero panel, using the second tab, and looking at the left series of rows.
Second: in the world of Tyria, there are events. These are a good way of getting experience and coin — and in the event of a success, karma, which is spent on certain special merchants, such as the source of hearts, when you complete their tasks.
Third: don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know something. Someone might answer. Especially in this sub-forum.
There is a hard cap on how many achievement points you can collect as the result of Daily Completionist. That cap is 15,000 AP.
I find it helpful that if you’re tracking down certain things, you keep a list of what needs to be accomplished or completed and remove those items as you finish them. That being said, glad you got your 100% and found the problematic area.
When in doubt, always hover over an area, and you’ll get a completion state.
To progress this part of the story, go to the watered area and defend Aurene while she gets the fish from enemies. There’s also a box of lost toys in that area you can grab and present for an instance achievement when you finish the segment.
However, if Aurene won’t move in that direction no matter what, then you might want to submit a bug report.
Mesmer has a lot of support options when buffs are concerned, especially if you get into Heart of Thorns content and get the Chronomancer. Once you get the playing style down, you’ll get quite a few friends (or if you’re in PvP/WvW, also quite a few raging enemies).
Elementalist, on the other hand, has a more flexible level of utility. Sacrificing built-in weapon swap for attunements (which actually counts as “swapping weapons”) you can pick what is best for the situation: water for keeping allies up and slowing enemies, lightning for decent crowd control, fire for burns and straight damage, and earth for bleeds/immobilise (and depending on your weapon set, cripples and weakness on foes). Potential ramps up when you get the Tempest, however I haven’t really seen enough Tempest ele’s to get a solid wager.
Since you’re working on support with some DPS contribution, I would definitely suggest you try Mesmer first and see if it’s right for you.
Don’t be intimidated by the “New challenges await” indicator especially if it points to an area that’s not your level. Look at the World Map. In most cases, the next tier of challenges is next to the zone you are currently in. Here’s some suggested transfers from 1-15 to 15-25:
Wayfarer Foothills: to Snowden Drifts (NW) or Diessa Plateau (E exit on NE, where the heart is).
Plains of Ashford: Go to Black Citadel, then take the N exit to Diessa Plateau
Kryta: S to Kessex Hills
Metrica Province: to Brisban Wildlands, N from Muridian WP, near the Reactor area
Caledon Forest: If not at least 22, go NW for Brisban Wildlands; you can also go NE for Kessex Hills (though you might be dropped into a Lv.23 area, hence the warning.)
When in doubt, you can also go to another race’s starting zone (WPs at starting areas are available automatically) and complete events/hearts for experience. Rewards for events are scaled to your level, but hearts only have experience scale, not coin/karma.
(Bonus: completing a zone nets you experience and rewards, with a small chance of a Black Lion Chest Key as one of the random rewards — except for cities, where you’ll get experience and a transmutation charge instead.)

Episode chapters you miss during the “bank frame” (when that chapter is just out) are usually unlockable in both the story journal and gem store (the latter only getting attention once the episode is complete), each costing gems to unlock.
The only episode you cannot unlock at all is Living Story Episode 1, as it was done before the Story Journal was introduced. However, you can get a recap with some cheesy rewards (emphasis on “cheesy”).
The Necromancer is powerful once you understand how it really works. Knowing when to use shroud can really tip the scenario of your situation to the better. Regular shroud is a ranged aspect, but once you get into Heart of Thorns and the Reaper spec, you’ll be a more impressive up-close monster as your shroud becomes “reaper’s shroud” and you get the shouts unlocked.
Necromancer has a lot to bring to the table, but it’s both “what” and “how” you bring to the table that makes them stand out.
Also, experiment with other classes. You don’t know what you’ll like if you don’t try.
You’ll come across various icons on the map as you play the game. Most of these are fixed:
Hearts: Complete tasks for a person to “fulfill” the individual and unlock a vendor, gain experience, coin and karma (special NPC currency).
Square: Point of interest. Obtained by proximity.
Mountain: Vista. Merely activating the cinematic obtains it. You can cancel the cinematic.
Glowing diamond: Waypoint. If you die, or need to get to a place quickly, use these — but it will cost coin. This is how we fast travel.
Dynamic events are usually orange icons with arrows (leads) and circular areas with the following icons:
Shield: Defend an objective at a place, or in transit; defend captured areas by killing monsters.
Crossed Swords: Capture an area by ridding monsters and keeping monsters away.
Skull: Kill a certain monster in the area. Some of these require a group effort to take down.
Bucket: Help an NPC with collecting certain items — turn those items into the NPC.
Awards are earned for participation in events, netting experience and coin. If the event ends successfully, karma is also earned.
If you need help with other specific things, do not be afraid to reach out to us in this forum — it’s why this forum exists, after all.
Hope this cleared up some of the confusion. If you need more info, send me a message or reply.
I, too, was confused about this mechanic; but seeing nottsgman’s explanation it makes much more sense now. Thank you. At least it has stopped me from asking the same question.
Staff has quite a bit of utility for necros as it gives us access to marks, which are the equivalent of traps. However it’s only use is for holding down a point and there’s a two-mark combo that results in an instant Area Weakness (Poison + Blast) when triggered – important if you’re feeling the pressure about to happen. However, in terms of utility overall, GS/staff is better on terms of mesmer/guardian, as there’s a ready-switch between power offense and support on both cases.
However, for terms of superior support, the Druid excels with the staff IMO. Necro doesn’t really cut it for me — I have a dagger/focus (with an inventory-stashed axe if I need distance) on the off with my sword for my Reaper spec.
You might want to try these setups yourself — all it boils down to IMO is personal preference. For me, I prefer GS/staff on my guardian if I can.
As long as your laptop meets the minimum specs you should be fine, though if it kinda dips lower you may want to set lower graphics/CPU details. For long plays, you might want to be powered (connected as if you’re charging), or intentionally lower your settings to conserve battery power if that isn’t an option.
Dual-screen user here. I use action camera as a toggle. That way, if I need to free my cursor for access to the side screen or specific targeting I can switch.
As for cursor location ping (Ctrl), that is enabled in the Windows control panel under “Mouse”, under the “Pointer Options” tab. Bottom option.
(For Win10 users, access the control panel option by right-clicking the Start Menu button or use Win+X for the system menu.)
Wayfarer Foothills, around and inside Shaman’s Rookery JP, the entire area has incorrect lighting.
Caledon Forest, north of Mabon Market WP; the “Don’t Touch The Shiny” minidungeon has incorrect lighting. Screenshot attached.
You’re not alone. I have also been encountering this glitch, and have also recorded video evidence of the matter. There’s 3-4 spots that cause the geometry to screw up. It all depends on camera angle, too.
That evidence can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJlR4FDTxdE
It can be easily witnessed if you go from the Vigil HQ waypoint.
After a lengthy ticket with Support this issue is being pushed to the devs. More witnesses wouldn’t hurt!
