I think the thing that happened was, they saw perhaps the majority of people liked the way silverwastes was handled (I at least did, I can be wrong in this). Sure, chest trains were a side effect, but the rest was to defend as best as they could and pop the event as fast as they could for the boss. It wasn’t perfect, but it was neat.
So for HoT, they decided to take that style, and merge it with a less popular style, the one at Southsun, which only really matters when a boss is going to spawn. Instead of players dictating when the boss event spawns, now its set on a hard timer, which…sucks. I really wish they left it in the hands of the players to decide.
if SW/DT were this popular , they wouldnt be in this situation
if they were, many more players would had stayed in game
The original game was too casual and easy. I am happy with the new direction. With a few tweaks here and there (mushroom explosion 30k damage wtf!?) the game’ll be fine.
They certainly should’ve added more than four maps and certainly they should’ve added maps with other mechanics instead of all of them with huge meta events taking place at a certain time. But that said I love them: they are complex, huge and ingeniously engineered. Embrace it, learn the mechanics and the stuff. It’s not that hard and if you have problem just play a necro:
“too casual and easy”=7 mio sold boxes
“complex and huge”=700k sold boxes
if it was too easy and casual, why did you stay for 3 years?
do you actually LIKE to play easy and casual games?
FYI, if i do stuff like this in other games, they give me at least one epic item
not random greens and blues, but purple or orange, and with multiple choices1. Those boxes were not 7 000 000. 7 000 000 ACCOUNTS were created, almost half of them when the game wen f2p.
2. That took 3 years with multiple 10-15 dollar sales.. No expansion sells as much as the base game in the history of anything.
3. That 700k figure you just pulled out of your kitten.Does staying around mean he/she has no right to criticize and ask for more? What a passive-aggressive statement…
1 if the core game sold 3.5mio copies, HoT still has a VERY long way to go
2 WoW/blizzard did
3 wait for the nerfhammer, that should give a hint of the real situation
4 if i find , that a game has NOTHING for me, i wouldnt stay for 3 years, and hope for a change
i would simply find a game , more suited for my skills/preferences

no thanks, ill just leave it , and play another game
GW2 has given me many hours of fun, if i try to push on beyond my limits, it will just
ruin my overall experience
sure, i want to progress my characters…but not at any price
when they make a new casual map, i will return, and play that
… When you say lots of MMO, I thought you meant WoW/FF14/SWTOR, because those market leading games sure have dungeons that are way harder than GW2. Neither are Aion/Vindictus/BnS/etc
Not sure about STO/DCUO though. If their endgame is easier than GW2 story… well, perhaps GW2 is too hard for your liking (As is all those MMO up there). Different preferences I guess.
i raided in wow, back in BC/WOTLK, even tanked a 45 min baron run
that was the absolute limit of my gaming skills and patience back then
even if i still could do the same, i wont
they can sell me pixels, that i enjoy here&now
not pixels, that i have to dig out behind tons of other pixels
The story quests in GW2 are some of the easiest content that I, a very casual player, have ever seen in a computer game. If they come across as hardcore content to you it might be a good idea to ask for advice with your build or playstyle.
“play as you want”, it was in their frigging manifesto
if all builds /playstyles are not viable, even in the levelling process, i guess that
isnt true ?
if were all supposed to use the power builds, why spend resources on making the other ones in the first place?
try missing a dodge in the later story missions…you die
that is NOT “easy content”
that is RAID contentI’m not sure if this is trolling.. because story mode GW2 is super easy. Like.. one of the easiest MMO contents out there and I played a lot of them. Raid content? not even dungeon content compared to other MMOs out there.
Supposed to use power build? condi/tanky builds work. Even my mesmer with mismashed gear from story missions made through the GW2 story without issues :|
im at endgame in STO ..that is easier, than story missions here
raiding in DCUO is roughly on par with story missions here
try again

And you dragged GW2 over to your raiding mentality instead of leaving it alone and letting it remain a non-raiding game.
He did nothing of the sort. The developers did as they felt and rightly so that adding content for controlled slightly larger than average encounters would foster community growth. It has.
Unfortunately a very vocal minority, oddly enough the same minority who complained about dungeons are now complaining about raids.
This group is never satisfied because following this flow chart is too hard for them. Replace Speed Run with “Non-Casual”.
“vocal minority”?
80% of the players play solo
90% dont raid at all
WHO is the vocal minority?
I don’t necessarily think adding raids was a bad idea, but I do think it was a bad idea to place so much focus on the raid for so long. I think it would be better to alternate raid releases with content that’s more accessible to the general community of players so people who aren’t interested in raiding don’t feel bored or left out.
We got an expansion with content for a lot of players — four zones, meta events, adventures, exploration and rewards to chase that one can actually get. Then we got one raid wing — three events, really. Then we got a Shatt rework. Then another wing. Still no L. Armor as raid reward. Come back and complain about “so much focus on raids” if you’re a WvW player, but not if you’re into general PvE.
Anet have admitted that HoT failed the casual audience
they plan on rectifying it with the next map..whenever that comes out
lets see how many will return, when the time comes
they have lost a good deal of core players with this one
The highest level zone to have hearts is Frostgorge Sound. The three Orr Zones, Southsun, Drytop, the Silverwastes and all four HoT zones don’t have them.
Hearts are not traditional quests and in fact didn’t exist in the game at all until the 3rd beta. They were added to keep people to where dynamic events spawn.
However, the story quests are like traditional quests and many of the collections are more similar to traditional quests as well.
HELL NO!
storyline quests are NOT normal quests, if they were, i would had quit mmos a long time ago
storyline quests are (mostly) like mini dungeons: play this way..or fail
that “gather the pact” quest is prolly the worst of them: really long and annoying,
and BUGGY AS HELL
getting an error message after an hour of intensive skill spamming is NOT funny
i just dont do them anymore, rather have my toon stuck, than playing something like thatNo idea what you’re talking about even a little. They play like regular quests or quest chains because they usually have multiple objectives and contain story. You kill certain things or obtain certain things or destroy certain things, much like a quest.
If you think the personal story events needed to be played a certain way, I’m not sure what to tell you. Because I’ve beaten personal story on every profession but revenant so far, and I’ve never had to do anything special on any profession to beat it. Saying that some stories have bugs is true. But then I’ve run into bugged quests in games too.
I can certainly see why someone might compare hearts to quests, excepting the fact that they’re always localized, and you can complete them many ways, even by doing a neighboring dynamic event and ignoring the heart altogether. Just the fact that most hearts can be completed incidentally makes them unquestlike to me.
However, yes, none of the later content has quests by design.
I still, however, have no idea why you’d have problems with most personal stories.
try reading the thread again, because i already wrote why
i have played many mmos, and GW2s story quests are same level of difficulty , as
the dungeons in many other mmos
hell, the longest of them take as long, as a dungeon to finish too
theyre basically asking the players to solo hardcore content
PS try standing still, and just use autoattack, as hardcores claim you can do EVERYWHERE IN TYRIA

1: it is cheaper to use and expand an existing system , instead of making a new one
2: wows underwater combat is not nearly as good, as GW2s
3:yes, i have have a big problem with jumping puzzles, i struggled to get many of the vistas
jumping puzzles with enemies around..even worse
4:i dont run dungeons and fractals here at all..tried a couple of times, wasnt my thing
if they made a REALLY easymode version, i would prolly try it at least once
if it was casual enough, i would happily run all my 23 characters through it
5: they made lions arch 3 times but theyre only using one of them..waste
they make a zone, cram it full of mobs, which they then spend time on nerfing..waste
they had a really good skill system, but they replaced it with a inferior system..waste
when blizzard make a zone, they just leave it open for eternal use
with bugs and all..
happy gamer? currently switching between Xcom2, master of Orion and the division
i have plenty of games to play, but i would like a reason to return to Tyria
AFAIK they have only made 2 regular hearts quests since launch?
Hope that collin's departure is a good sign

i hope he finds a good job
mmo players are like children, it must be very frustrating, to work on that side of the fence
no matter, what they say, or do..they will always get flak from someone
i dont need advice, i just need some new casual content
i could prolly slug my way though HoT, if i REALLY wanted/needed it, at least on my strongest characters
i play for fun and relaxation, HoT is neither , IMO
they have a great underwater combat, but they dont do anything new with it
instead, they use precious resources on a new gliding system , which is mediocre at best
they have wasted a ton of resources on content, that too few people enjoy
that is why, the population is steadily declining
if you build it, we will pay and play
I hear a lot of complaints about the solo-unfriendliness of HoT. Specifically, many players prefer to be able to explore maps without having to fight for their lives every step of the way. I really don’t think that’s an unreasonable expectation, given the decided focus on accessibility for players who are not “hardcore”.
On the other hand, it’s clear that casual and hardcore do not mesh well together in the same content. Why couldn’t we have different instances of the same content with one tuned for casual exploration and the other existing more or less as it does now?
This has a few advantages over the current situation. Not only does it give players the opportunity to enjoy these excellent maps on their own terms, it separates out a lot of the conflict. For instance, players who are actively participating in events would probably prefer to be on a map with other players who are also participating in events.
There would be some details to work out. Obviously, risk vs. reward is important. But as most of the loot and experience is locked up in event rewards anyway, I feel this would work itself out. Playing on the “casual exploration” instance of an HoT map would offer far less potential for loot and experience simply because there are no events.
It’s probably the best solution I’ve heard for keeping casual and hardcore players happy, and it wouldn’t be a permanent decision the way choosing a PvP or PvE server in WoW is. You can move freely between instances.
I like it! Now…what do you suppose are the potential pitfalls of this plan? Would it be feasible in terms of resources? What other approaches to consider?
this is the best idea i have seen yet, they can use the same map resources
casual version only needs a handful of static faceroll mobs, so they could still use roughly 80 % of the resources on the hardcore version
considering the amount of phasing etc, im surprised they havent tried it yet
MAKE IT HAPPEN DEVS
because, we already did similar content in SW/DT(and that didnt cost 50$)
they would have to pay me real $$, to do this
i would only need masteries , to play the hardcore content..and i dont play that
anyway
another multi stage quest bugging out? what a shocker
Mordy can keep the jungle, i wont fight him
i wont even try it
roughly 3 hrs, enough to know, that it isnt content for me
even if they nerf it to hell, i still wont do it
the only thing, that they could lure me back with is new casual content
but, at least it looks MUCH prettier, than Orr
Wow that ending was really bad, ANet (Rant)
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: battledrone.8315
apparantly, its even worse, than zhaitan was
good luck with that, im not touching it with a ten foot laser pole
But all ANET did was give the players what they were asking for. Look through the old forums posts…
people asked for raids or harder 10 man dungeons,
people were asking for challenging content that wasn’t as face roll easy as old tyria maps (which the new content is only a little harder ie more punishing for not paying attention to mobs abilities or surroundings)
people asked for new wvw maps and new mechanics to go with them
People asked for pvp leader boards and tournaments / leagues.
They asked for new ways to play there classes…..
So I’m not sure how ANET lied… or didn’t deliver every single thing these forums were begging for since 2013. ANET originally stated they would never do expansions in a interview and the forums exploded saying GW2 was more than worthy for expansion like the orginal guildwars… I mean what did yall want if not everything you asked for and they delivered….
a very loud minority asked for those things, i just wanted more ordinary content
when the next quarterly comes up, we will see , how small that minority was
this IS end game content, it has ended this game for many of us

KEY personal Arent important in computer business?
this the business, where they are MOST important, sometimes one person can
make or break a huge investment of time and money
HoT is a fine example of thatOf course they’re important. That’s why companies like Amazon are willing to poach them in the first place.
Not being able to outbid Amazon, however, isn’t necessarily a sign of trouble, and it’s common in the software business for talented people to switch companies to pursue career advancement. Indeed, the opposite is uncommon.
There may well be other factors in play, including factors worthy of worrying about, but absent more details that aren’t likely to be forthcoming, assuming the worst is no more enlightening than assuming the best.
so, they lost some important persons..but still, you claim, that it isnt a problem?
that would only be true, if they magically conjured some new workers , with the exact same skills, but for a smaller wage

Having employees — even key employees — poached by Amazon isn’t exactly a sign of trouble. Amazon is making a play in the game development space, and if they want someone, they possess the wherewithal to make offers people can’t refuse and few competitors can match. If anything, it’s a testament to the talent at ArenaNet, because Amazon is rather picky about who they hire.
I think ArenaNet was reasonably clear that Heart of Thorns was intended to offer greater challenge, and it does. I suppose they could have explained that in greater detail before release, but I don’t think it is fair to suggest they were out to mislead anyone.
As for how hard the level of challenge should be, every player has a different preference, and ArenaNet must ultimately choose between setting the bell curve to satisfy the most players, or losing money.
Though they are quite sensitive to player feedback, the squabbling in the forums won’t change the cold, hard business realities that must drive those decisions. Player comments do have some influence, but the big questions will ultimately be decided by ArenaNet’s core principles, strategic vision, in-game data and revenue.
Otherwise, there really will be reason to worry about the future of Guild Wars 2.

HoT is a fine example of that

we had the “pleasure” of doing something similar before in silverwastes
silverwastes didnt cost us 50$ though
and it didnt exactly revitalize the game either, did it?
the core game is free, and that is where NEW players start
so, it IS a F2P mmo nowIts not a point, its your opinion. The opinion of someone who doesn’t like challenge, progression and puzzles. You just like to spam 1 on a farm map.
By your logic any car that you can test drive can be considered “free”. Because you can drive in it without paying for it. But to have the full functionality, you have to pay the total sum. Still in your eyes its “free”.
So by this logic, you should hang around at a car shop, test driving cars all day. And keep from saying bad things about other peoples cars, who actually paid for it. Thank you.
EDIT: Which basically means, go back to silverwastes. Thank you.
the nerfhammer is already in action, that means, that i wasnt the only one
if the test drive lets me go almost anywhere for as long, as i want. yes it is
PRACTICALLY a free carThis company shouldn’t actually listen to players test driving all day, because they aren’t paying anyways.
Oh yeah, if you were the only player that wanted easy content, I wouldn’t be here posting in defense. I have to, because Anet caters to braindead players that need a giant arrow to lead them to the chest, and make players press F for free loot.
Lol, that picture.
Yeah people feel entitled to every bit of content in the game without playing it just because they paid for it and fail to remember its an mmo and it should not work that way, you already see people being but hurt about Nightfury, how dare they make it so hard to get, if people actually wanted Nightfury they would have bough wings and the brew day one before it got expensive but no, I am a crybaby, i come after 3 years and demand to have my free ultra rare item because I paid for the game. This also goes back to people that complained about HoT giving the core game for free, so you have Blizz that ask for ex-pack price plus you need to pay for all other previous ex-packs ( gotten better in the recent years but you still need to pay) but when ANet gives freebies so that more of out friends can come to the game easily old players can only say, but where is my shiny … it may be the friendliest community but lacks on logic a lot.
I am afraid for when raids will come out, because we know how much of a facerooll they will be after 3 days because of “casuals”. To be fair, I think the vast majority of the casual players don’t even look once at the forum or give a review. I don’t see why companies still listen to the the vocal minority that always has something to say about everything, maybe not all games should cater to all people, maybe we can just do without some, I don’t see how I can take a person seriously when they live a 1/10 stars review because they can’t get a hero point on day one.
i didnt pay money to WORK
i paid for a game, that was supposed to be FUN
if they want me to work, THEY have to pay ME
does that compute?

I want to start by saying that i love the expansion so far but, its gonna start to feel less rewarding if its gonna get nerfed so much.
I want to say so many things about this that I don’t even know where to start, i understand that this game is firstly a business and that it needs to attract as many people as possible, specially casuals that tend to keep the game running most of the times because they are the spenders of real money of the game, they work and maybe buy some gems here and there like myself because they can’t afford to play the game enough to get thing, I get that.
That being said, there is no reason why its “unacceptable” as they say to have gated content, what was the reason to change the hero points in VB? What was so bad in us playing the game, earning that hero point after 2 weeks of play or something, I did hero points casually here and there and managed to unlock my spec and I still have more than half hero points available to get I think.
This doesn’t come from a ’ omg look at me hardcore player’ this just comes from someone that is casual but I want to feel rewarded for playing the game. Its enough that most of the game is unrewarding in many ways, event xp doesn’t scale depending on difficulty or length, gold rewards are something to be desired, you spend months for an achievement just o get 5 points and the list goes on.
You guys finally gave us something that was rewarding, it said look, if you finish this, you get to do all this fun stuff, or you get to go to this cool place and get a hero point, I don’t think that having 2 hero points on VB gated behind poison lore was something that had to be addressed. You can go to Dragon Stand be part of the large event and get 3 hero points just by ignoring some mini bosses, we could do that instead.
The point of my post is, its ok for us not not have access to everything right from the start, its ok for content to be time gated, its ok for the story to be time gated, I think you guys at ANet forget this is an mmo, and that GW2 is a B2P so there is no subscription pressure on people, these people that complain now, will finish the content that you nerfed in a week and move on to another game and all that will be left are the bad reviews and the nerfs.
1.this is a F2P mmo now
2. yes, this is what happens, when you screw 2/3 of your playerbase
lets see, how long the remaining players can keep it afloat
give them, what they want
you wont see many casuals returning after this disappointment anyway
at least not PAYING casuals, since they can get, what they want for free now
enjoy your expansion guys, it will prolly have to last 3+ years
glad it worked out for you guys
im not going through a hardcore version of silverwastes again
for the first time, im actually considering , to uninstall this game
“Grind” lol what a joke… they give you more hours of diversion and you find a way to complain about it. As if there’s any other reason to play a game. You can’t deny it, every complaint about “gating” this and “grindy” that simply boils down to “I want it sooner.”
How about you take a step back and realize you’re playing a kittening video game?
the problem is, that i paid for it, and i dont like to play it
if i pay for something, it should be better, than a FREE alternative
its not.
its about 1/10 of the core game..for the same price
yea, they screwed me1/10? You must be joking man . Each map has 3 lvls is like playing 3 maps at the same time. 50$ made you? after probably playing 2-3 years the core game? You all must be so casual when complaining about it.
PS: The GAME was more GRINDY BEFORE if you had gold almost everything was yours.
how much of the new maps is blocked terrain/ walls, etc?
the new maps look big, but you are actually being funneled through narrow
mob zones
the older maps might be smaller, but they were OPEN
and , they had different quests/ mobs too
the new expansion doesnt offer any choices at all
this is exactly the opposite of the old GW2
it LOOKS and SOUNDS amazing
it PLAYS horribly
that is a PROBLEM

im not playing this game , until its overGreat news!!
Go play something else and don’t come back
swtors defenders said the same
look, what they got
The problem with Wurm is that its open world content, which means that a bunch of newbies or griefers can come and ruin the event. This sort of content belongs in an instance as a clasic raid. Then guilds or teams can organize and do it without worry.
The game was made and sold on the idea of open world content. There isn’t a single raiding instance in the whole game. Never has been. Hopefully never will be. Raids also revolve around the axis of the classic trinity, which is also not present in this game. If that’s what you want, I’m not really sure what you’re doing playing this game in the first place. You’re best off finding another MMO.
open World? LA WAS open..now , its closed, unless, im a raider
they turned the biggest transport hub into a RAIDING INSTANCE
its not the fact, that the hardcores get content
its the fact, that they removed a functional part of the game, to make it
how long will this go on, anyway?
im not playing this game , until its over
good for the hardcores, bad for the casuals
10 mins was enough for me, no matter what shinies they throw at me
i hope they end it soon..like tomorrow
the best part was the intro cinematic

ive had bosses spawn right behind me, during the normal levelling content
try surviving that, if youre already fighting 2 normal mobs, and on ½ Health
and , since they spawn with no warning, i cant really avoid them can i?
if you dont know , what to tell me, why on earth did you write anything?
the only way to skip bosses in this game , is not to play it at all
looks like my game budget is going to STO Again
at least, they know how to seperate their content
Harcored gamers are the ones who maintain mmorpgs alive while the casuals see every new game they played like the best game of their virgins lives and they jump ship to the next shiny thing.
sure,,EVE is around 500 k subs now,,after 10 years as the best hardcore game
wow is still chugging along with over 6 mio subs, and they certainly didnt have any
big impact on the business, did they?
hardcore=niche game, with a niche budget
they already made one of those,,they call it the secret World
and it tanked even faster, than i expected
so,,getting ganked by a boss , while im levelling is casual friendly?
and im so casual, that i dont DO dungeons anymore,,so that isnt helping me either
im playing..and paying for fun and immersion
if i want challenging gameplay,,i can always find the content for that
but spreading it over the entire game, like SWTOR did, is just a a bad idea
i already uninstalled SWTOR
when i need more Space on my hard drive,,this game is next,,,sadly
they made one of best mmos on the market
and then they ruined it Again, by adding all those OP bosses
Yes, GW2 is meant for casuals. I’ve said before, hardcore MMO players will find more satisfaction from games like WoW, Neocron 2, SWTOR, Rift…
GW2 is meant for a casual playerbase and this is good
wow is WAY more casual friendly, than this game
and the sub number prove that
the main reason: they keep their bosses locked up in dungeons
they dont put them on every streetcorner, like this game does
and more importantly: they dont spawn a boss in the middle of a lowbie quest area
“just 2 more mobs, and im done with this quest…OH, S…..”
whoever though THAT would be a good idea?
oh yes,,we casuals LOVE to do the boss dance every 5 mins
during the normal quests
the surprise attacks of event bosses
and, of course, the EPIC storyline bosses
maybe ill pop back in for a couple of days Again next yearreason i like the quick boss battles cause every moment i play the game i have to decide where to spend my time fun versus gold in game to spend on what i want. i have to decide if i want to do achievements and doing just dailies and monthlies all the time. ive gotten most monthlies but only half the dailies and hardly finished achievements for living stories useless i can finish then up within a few hours of play
and that makes you a hardcore player
designing an mmo for the hardcore player will give them the according income
until they give me the option to skip those bosses completely, im not paying them another cent
but hey…perhaps they can just reprogram all those bosses to give them their next paycheck

thanks,,but no thanx
i did my part of BOSS BATTLES in wow, now i cant stand them anymore
getting a Group kills the immersion, IMO, and is always a hassle
my suggestion would be this: make an easier mode with reduced rewards
and possibly tweak the levelling curve for the squishies
i stopped doing the story missions
id rather miss out on the content, than suffering through these insane missions
some classes, like ranger or guardian can do them quite easily
but the squishy classes? forget it
ill just do most of the normal content, and move to another game
yes, there is still difficulty spikes
for some days i couldnt remember who made this game,,it bugged me, cause this
game is so much better, than the competition.
finally i had to cheat , and look at the site,, and then i understood
the guys, who gave us CoX,,,nuff said
thank you devs for making this awesome game,,the best ive played in 20 years
thank you fellow players for a great community,,havent seen any flaming or trolling yet
after my escape from pandaland, and surviving tortanic,,i hope i can stay her for the
next years. finally a game for a noob carebear like me. me so happy,,me wanna cry
