I went with Energy, personally. Seemed to be the best place for it since I use scepter or mace depending on what I’m doing.
I switched from Altruism to Soldier’s last night because while everything else was working fantastically, I felt that I was weak on condition removal. Soldier’s are relatively cheap right now, so that’s the direction I went (I use full Knight’s gear, Maintenance Oil and Truffle Ravioli). Worked out pretty well I think. Lost about 150 points of HP, though, so my healing is less than it used to be. I’ll have to play with it a few more nights to really get a feel for how much I lost and what I gained in return.
EDIT: Replaced Soldier’s Spineguard with Magi’s and gained 45 HP without any significant loss. Might swap out Truffle Ravioli for Spicy Chocolate Cookie for food to get back the other 100 HP.

Was on EB for a couple weeks and would roam solo as a Guardian with some success. Some nights all I’d do is run into groups and zergs, but I found my fair share of 1v1 or v2 that made it worth it.
New movie: Mag/BP/DR Montage
So many lost bags out there all alone full of loot feeling unwanted and ignored. I feel sad for them.
I love staff with scepter shield when I’m running with a keep taking crew. Staff 1 will go through doors, so I charge up with 4 like some kind of Saiyan, then hit 1 through the gate for massive damage. It’s also great for zerg support even in the open field. You can put out a ton of close range ae damage with 1 and finish someone off low with 2 on a crit. Then ae dps with speed on 3. 5 for blocking retreat or them getting into their sally port. It’s a pretty good weapon in my opinion.
Best post on the WvW forum I’ve seen yet.
And all of it true! It’s a three way revolving door hacking alliance! ZOMG!
Here’s me wishing I had a similar ability. :P
Nicely done! Myself and the other person standing next to me just stood up by the keep and watched the show since we already had our fill of that guy. Besides, we weren’t going to go too far out to see the end because your folks kept eyeballing us like fresh steaks. O.O
No need for IMs. I’ve said my piece.
None of that works on P/D? If they can’t stealth they do literally no damage. Even if they DO stealth they are so easy to beat it’s funny. One condition removal will beat 80% of P/D thieves. You seem to forget that a good player on ANY class will beat most people. I can run and reset a fight with any of my characters, that’s not exclusive to thieves.
Right, because bleeds can’t be reapplied and condition removals aren’t on cool downs and once you’re unstealthed none of your 1 – 5 abilities work anymore (really? “literally no damage”? :P ). Also, Thieves aren’t one of the highest mobility classes in the game and can catch up to anyone outside maybe a D/D ele.
This conversation has gotten to the point of being surreal.
They will stealth. Either use a long CD utility, their heal, or they will hit you with CnD. Learn to count to 3 because after 3 seconds you’re going to get hit. Here’s the big secret: DODGE. It’s really easy. Press your dodge button on 3 and watch as the thief comes out of stealth and does 0 damage! Now hit him twice and press F stomp him. Congrats, you killed your first thief.
Done. None of that works on P/D thiefs that aren’t glass canons. And the ones that are and have 2 brain cells bouncing around in their heads, will just reset the fight. Plus they can “DODGE” as you put it. Then there’s caltrops. Then they shortbow or whatever away, stealth again and come back at you with full health. Nice try though. I also like how you added your other classes to your sig since you last posted I’m guessing so you can come off as more legit. Whatever. Thiefs need serious work regardless of how much you try to defend them.

I can see what any other class out there is doing and have learned how to adapt to what they’re doing without ever having played one. Why is it always the same argument from Thieves that I have to play one all the way to 80, get full exotics, etc. etc before I can understand how to counter them? Why is it that no one sees how absolutely ridiculous that argument is?
People whine about thieves, absolutely. Because they absolutely have something to whine about. Being able to go invisible at will puts you at an advantage above and beyond all other classes. And it won’t stop until it’s either taken away or something else is done to bring them in line with everyone else.
Please make a thief, run that build, and get stomped. The skill required to play thief is low, sure, but that’s true for most classes. It’s ignorant to say that the skill ceiling is low though.
No, what takes skill is actually being able to beat a Thief, even a terrible one. Now you go spend all your time leveling up another class, maybe Engineer, so you can see where you’re ignorant.
Heya EA. EB guy here from [BP]. Was standing around watching some of your folks attempt to kill a P/D Thief from Yak’s [KR] last night south of bay in Yak’s. Good times. Good times. Couldn’t get close to taking him out myself. Tried multiple times, multiple nights. Apparently your guild group + didn’t have any luck either.
Anyways… Looking forward to the reset tonight. I’d ask, though, that you guys let us EB folks have the Klovan tower in Eternal at some point this weekend if you don’t mind. It’s my very last POI in WvW but I can’t seem to get it. Thanks in advance! <3
A better thread would have highlighted a class that takes some actual skill to play well. Maybe “best ranger”, “best necro” or “best engineer”. At the very least a class you can actually see for any length of time. Not a class like this where, as a pistol/dagger thief you can just spam 1 and 5, stealth at will, escape at will, all with zero skill needed.
Well played Chris!
So it’s a countdown timer that starts at equipped as opposed to being “ready” until the first condition then counting 10 seconds from there. No idea why I thought that it worked that way.
Thanks folks.
So, as soon as you equip it, a 10 second countdown timer starts, then at the 10 second mark, it checks if there’s a condition to remove, if not, starts the 10 second timer again?
Dave (the necro in the movie) splits time between an 80 Elementalist, 80 Necro, 80 Engineer, 80 Thief, 80 Warrior, and now an 80 Mesmer. I honestly don’t know how he does it. I have to stick to one class and play it to refine what I’m doing.
I’m sure he’d agree that he is not playing some of the classes optimally since he doesn’t had a lot of driving time on some of them. His main is the Elementalist.
And if you are wondering how he has so many 80 alts. Tons of money from extreme luck at the Mystic Forge and crafting.
Ah, that explains it. And looking back I see it now as me being critical as opposed to discussing something I saw. Never post before the first cup of coffee…. or even while drinking it. Save posting for much later!
Personally, I couldn’t do that. I rely too much on muscle memory. I’d be trying trying to Ride the Lightning in Death Shroud. :P
I love the mace the more and more I play it. I just wish it had a snare or root on it. JI only gets you so far and I hate getting kited! But the DPS output on it is very nice plus the extra healing and buffs for AH. Good stuff.
So, with your videos, the stomping thing is annoying, to be sure, but what I found to be far more saddening about the state of WvW was just how many unlooted bags were laying around between you and your Necro. So ridiculous.
Oh and the other comment I’d make is that your Necro seems to be condition specced but he spends an awful lot of time in Death Shroud when he should get in and out of it and a lot of time with staff instead of scepter. Get those Bleeds out there! Epidemic! Bleed them dry! Get conditions on you and give them back out with dagger! Or am I missing something completely with his build?

@akamon
I was hoping to make up some amount of toughness with the soldier’s runes along with additional vitality. Now I’m not so sure. I wish there was armor that was HP/Toughness/Precision. :P
I’m honestly not quite sure why I’m tweaking my armor. It works fantastic as is. It’s like I can’t stop tinkering! My intent, though, was to get more HP and precision along with more condition removal. I might, however, switch to Cleric’s weapons from Berserker’s, and use lemongrass soup for condition reduction time. Hmm… but that might reduce my precision too much.
/ponder
I really wish I had access to a pve/wvw builder!
Wryscher… scepter/dagger with staff in offhand. Blood is Power > Epidemic > Profit. Seriously… it’s a great class with some bugs that need addressing. Maybe some traits moved around, but all classes can claim that.
Saiyan Fap… I’ll just say that sounds painful.
And finally, at the original poster, I would also like all Shadow Skelks outside of hills in the BL nerfed. Their ability sound makes me think an OP Thief is coming at me, bro.
So, using full knight’s with runes of altruism has been working pretty great. But I want to swap out to soldier’s for more condition removal. I’m thinking pre/hp/vit gear from AC with full soldier’s runes. I think I’d just keep my current knight’s accessories.
Anyone with PvE builder or better math skills than myself let me know if this gear strategy would work out well enough? Thanks in advance.
Still love the build, btw. Couldn’t imagine running w/o it. Just so much durability and group support/healing without feeling like I’m hitting like a wet noodle.
Sounds like everybody misses Mag.
No… no that’s not it…
I’m wearing full exotic Knight’s with mostly exotic Knight’s trinkets. Back piece is Soldier’s until I can find a Knight’s. All weapons Berserker’s with Sigil of STR on the Hammer, Ice on the Scepter and Hydromancy on the shield (for now anyways). Right now, with truffle ravioli, I’m sitting at 46% crit. The runes, though, are 6x Altruism. The price was right at 50sp per or so and 2 buffs on heal seemed like an excellent fit. That about right or should I have gone for something else?
Looks like Ehmry Bay is moving to Tier 4!
Still failed, even when I copy/pasted & removed the Anet header and added the forward
slants back in. Not to worry, I’ll figure it out.
Ya, I just verified the link works with copy paste. Did you make sure you got both lines? Not sure what’s going on otherwise. Good luck!
I might be back to Ehmry Bay. I moved with BP but due to my schedule, couldn’t join the guild WvW raids. So, I headed back to IoJ to hang with my old small guild of guys I’ve known since EQ in ‘99. Unfortunately, they’re not playing much and mostly into PvE.
Anyways, I miss the organization BP brought to WvW and EB and I was only there for a week! I still hear “STACK ON ME STACK ON ME LIGHT FIELDS BLAST FINISHERS!!!!” in my sleep…. O.o
One of my favorites that I got from the guru forums:
http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQRAsd7elYgiDnGyNEf4Eh1DCeQ/VVIeXPgYEbIA
Full info here: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/58213-guardian-zealot-spike-guide-for-spvp-and-tournaments/
And the next person who says bad link gets a kick in the shin. Copy/paste! The board puts an extra carriage return in long links for some reason. This gets brought up so often, I wish it were a sticky. Not that anyone ever reads stickies…
I’m with dooger. These guys are rock stars of an invisible audience. Tickets have been sold and redeemed but the audience is nowhere to be seen.
Does anyone else see the word fact typed in all caps like that and immediately assume the opposite?
Came up as a bad Link El
The board adds an extra carriage return in long links like that. You have to copy paste it.
This comes up SO often. I’m thinking of adding it as my sig. :P
Big fan of sword/focus. Blinds and teleports! Fun!
Hammer follows closely after. Having a blast finisher on a 4 second cool down is just plain awesome.
Using pingplotter I’m getting intermittent (10%) packet loss at ae-7-7.ebr3.Dallas1.level3.net.
I guess I should have added that I’m on Verizon in upstate NY. So, this is definitely outside of my network.

Thanks for posting the video! With it I’m finally all done with WvW. The lack of real rewards, the ridiculous requirements for titles, culling, thieves, etc. etc. I’m tired of it all and none of it will get addressed. So, thanks! I can finally feel okay about giving up what was my most anticipated piece of this game.
Well done. Thanks for taking the time to write it up.
I’m sitting here trying to think of ways to entice others into WvW, but in it’s current state, I just can’t do it. Class balance is completely out of whack with Thieves destroying you in a second. You basically have to build for swiftness, ranged DPS and condition removal lest you be left behind snared and bleeding with your sword uselessly hanging in your hand. The rewards compared to PvE are paltry at best. It’s a complete money sink for most people.
I just don’t know what to tell people. On occasion, sure, you’ve got epic battles. But mostly you’re either zerging, getting zerged, or attacking a wall, gate, or waiting for a camp supervisor’s immunity buff to drop. Personally, being a DAoC vet from way back, I really looked forward to WvW. I’m a casual player due to family life, so only have about 3200 kills, give or take, but I’m out every night I’m on. Sadly it’s been pretty disappointing the entire time. I haven’t quite gotten myself to stop the habit, but I’m getting close.
What about if you have your pet in a passive state, you lose its utility, but you gain a flat bonus to your damage? Or a signet that does the same, but only works if you don’t have your pet out?
Or just have your pet dodge every time you do.
Dude. kitten not everything is about gear. And glory? It’s a video game. I think you may want to evaluate your priorities in life or something.
Thanks for the feedback, but honestly, I’m torn between sticking with it or just continuing to level my Necro alt. I’ve got somewhere between 350 – 400 hours on my Mesmer I think but other than a couple of really good fights, I’m just not that good with it. I need something a little less finesse and more durable I think. /shrug
That’s because staff is a defensive weapon. For sieges and running with the zerg, you need to swap to GS. Also change out your utilities to be more group oriented. For instance, blink and decoy would change to feedback and null field. That kind of thing.
So I swapped to this build, was running out to join my guild for WvW raid night, ran into another mesmer that had a similar build to this and got owned in about 6 seconds. facepalm
Trying to get the runes, but they’re friggin expensive so I’m still in my full Centaur’s. Also, all Berserker’s exotics. I’m working on changing that because I’m tired of being squishy with 15k health.
Anyways… hopefully with some practice I’ll live up to the potential of the build. I only had it for 2 minutes before becoming someone’s doormat, so that’s my excuse. Sigh.
What people are missing with the posts on how to beat a thief is the fact that there are so many of them in every class forum on every GW2 board. That, to me, speaks volumes. Let’s say, for example, there were a ton of “how to beat a ranger” threads on every forum. Think about that (and try not to be sad, rangers, this is hypothetical). Wouldn’t you think that maybe there’s something wrong there? Well, it’s Thiefs and there is.
Just got out of WvW… BAM BAM BAM poof BAM BAM BAM poof … Ya, I’m all done with that. Thief needs SERIOUS looking at with stealth. Revealed does absolutely nothing. Should be 10 seconds at least between stealth abilities. I thought this game wasn’t going to have perma stealth rogues. Guess not…
LOL@ the SNL reference in the chat.
Thought I was the only one old enough to get that…
LAND SHARK!
Rocket boots are considered a self cast knockback. You’re immune to knockbacks (along with a handful of other things) while under the effects of stability. So, no, it’s not a bug. It’s how the mechanic works.
3 is the perfect number discovered with DAoC. With 2, you get RvDoor (or WvDoor in this game). With 4 you get 3v1 against whomever’s on top. Plus, you push past the limits of technology for people on the map. Just look at culling now. With 3, you can 2v1, but that 1 has a chance to defend. Plus, you can’t count on the other to not back stab you, which is an entirely valid tactic. You find more fights than you do 1v1.
Anyways… 3 is perfect. No more. No less.
Sorry is this is a little disjointed. I’m trying to multitask and failing per usual.
Culling also plays havoc with the names and target markers above someone’s head. I don’t meant the giant symbol you get from calling target, but rather the down pointing triangle thingy above the Invader or Defender name you see when you have them selected. I’ll see them pop out of stealth and not be sure if I have them targeted or not because there’s nothing above their head. Very annoying.
I want to see videos of people actually countering a Thief’s opening move.
Very nice. Thank you.
