For small roaming groups, it’s great. By default, www players focus on rangers since the vast majority are easy-kills, so in addition to the pet dps, the apoth/BM build will buy lots of time for your team. I tend to go for movement/survival/control in that case though, so mud/signet of the hunt/lightning reflexes/entangle, rather than sick’em/QZ/etc. You sacrifice some pet burst, but get lots of control that helps the party.
For zerg fights though, i just can’t see how to make it work. The pet drops too fast, and even if it doesn’t, it’s only ever a single-target burst, which isn’t all that useful in a zerg. AoE really rules those situations so when zerging, I just drop the apoth stuff and go p/v/t with a piercing arrows build.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
If you do wvwvw, then Snow Leopard is handy. Forget damage, but stealth and long sprint are brilliant to get away or to run through a zerg and get inside your keep. Heck, i even ‘wasted’ it the other day just to make it to the capping circle in time. :p
Now as a rule, Rampage as One (stability) and Entangle (aoe immobilize+bleed) are more useful, but Snow Leopard is a handy little toy.
And well, for non-elites, it’s very ranger-y, you can summon more pets. :p
Save the Bell Choir activity!
Depends on what you’re after at top end imho. I absolutely love my ranger for open environment pve and roaming/skirmishing in wvwvw. I mainly play a beastmaster build with the evade dance (sword+dagger/GS), and it feels exhilarating at times.
Large-scale battles are something else entirely, and i’m still struggling to find out how to contribute more to them. At the moment, i juggle between ccing, range-dpsing/quickness-stomping of foes downed by the melee train, and pestering the enemy backline clothies. Engineers have this one easier thanks to plenty of spammable aoe dps (flamethrower, grenades, bombs…) in addition to their utility value.
Dungeons, you’ll be fine provided you’re running with friends/guild, and don’t mind having to work more for the same result (running dungeons on my warrior is way way easier, no hiding from that). If that’s not the case and you’ll heavily rely on random groups, then expect a good few rude types or speedrunners dismissing you fast. Unfortunately for you, you’ll have the same issue with engineer.
Now, there’s bugs, broken abilities, underwhelming skills, and a pet AI that will sometimes make you cry. But past all this, there’s an agile skirmishing class with a nice pick of cc skills. And furry companions.
I’d advise you to get to Heart of the Mists, and try out the popular ranger/engineer builds to see how you like them. You’ll have access to all skills/traits/runes, so that’s what your level 80 will look like.
Have fun with the mobs on the map, the class NPCs for 1v1, and some hotjoin 8v8 for sheer madness. It won’t give you any idea about how you’ll perform in dungeons, but you should get a grasp of what combat style feels right for you.

Doh. Thanks for the answer folks. Not the ones i was hoping for, but at least it’s pretty clear now. On the good side, that means i don’t have to bother with pet-dedicated gear.
As for no combat log for the pet, wow, just wow. I really thought i was missing something somewhere. Here’s hoping it’ll come sooner than later…
Save the Bell Choir activity!
Hi folks,
At the moment, i’m playing around wvwvw with full pet builds, which (for me at least) means i’m half useless for the team, but having a good right laugh when i get to kill some unlucky sieging opponent with a stealthed Jaguar.
Toying around looking for a better setup is a bit tricky though, because of two things, where hopefully someone here can help:
1) where the *£&$ is the option to tick to have the pet events appear in the combat log? Having to look at the numbers live and remember them is annoying.
2) i always assumed pet direct DPS was only related to the pet’s own Power. Is condition damage for the pet the same? Or does the ranger’s condition damage affect the bleeds stacked by the pet? And condition duration? In fact, is any ranger stats or rune bonus on the ranger affecting the pet, like for example centaur runes affecting the pet bleeds?

Tell me if this is some sort of bizarre type of lag or a new kind of “hack”: when you down someone they stay in place for about a few seconds at a time, all the while periodically teleporting around at what appears to be random.
Saw an opponent do that ages ago, but it was most definitely not random. The porting went all the way from the tunnel at ****lake tower to the south east spawn, as fast as i could run.

Each week, replace the borderlands with one random map from PvE. Remove hearts, keep wildlife, add keeps, throw players. It balances itself like now with 3 identical borderlands, each side having a different spawn on each.
I want to fight in the broken Ruins of Ascalon. I want to fight in the valleys of Lornar’s Pass. I want to fight in the dredge mines of Frostgorge Sound. I want to man cannons in the Pirate base in Gendaran Fields.
We’ll never have open world pvp. Fine. But pleaaaaase, there’s so many pretty areas in this game, give us these maps to play on!

Our group failed a few times before we noticed where the assassins spawn. There’s two places where they spawn, and they alternate each time one dies (or at least, a new one appeared by the time it took us to dps the first). One guildie was target-marking the new assassin every time, and we just perma-focused them. Plenty of aoe made a good few other random mobs die too, but it’s really just about taking down the assassins. It was rather easy once we got that.

Because it was difficult to balance their servers to handle too many players in too many areas at the same time. With FOTM and the ascended carrot, they’re now all in LA. More predictable, easier to balance, just allocate more resources to LA overflows, there’s no one anywhere else.
In a way, it made GW2 more like GW1 than ever: thousands of players in dozens of instances of the town hub spamming the map chat, and once you leave town, you only meet NPCs.

I’d have put 8/10 to the elementalist, since i can’t have enough of charr-based puns.
For Oro Blanco, 5/10, that’s an armour-based nickname, not the name that was given to this Charr on his birth. Too easy. You don’t get to choose your name, as one particular member of my Charr stable knows too well…
=====
Our Charr had the misfortune of being born during the visit of an asuran commercial delegation well intent of selling some of Rata Sum’s latest inventions to the Black Citadel. One of those inventions was a customisable stone carving golem that they managed to push into the Black Citadel Birth Register on a free trial (the golem would deactivate itself after 30 days). As our black and red ball of fur was born, his proud sire went on his merry way to declare the birth of “Ragnar” (voted most popular cub name at the time by ‘Furball Magazine’ that year).
Unknownst to him, the Charr Stone Carver’s Guild, incensed at the possibility of losing their contract of exclusivity with the Birth
Register, had been plotting the demise of the asuran invention. Having captured a random passing-by Asura, they managed to convince him to give them basics in golem operations in exchange of showing him the way to the Bane PoI which he needed for his 100% map completion. With this information, the CSCG then sent a young-but-promosing novice to sabotage the golem, telling him it was his mandatory
initiation quest, and throwing an underleveled piece of gear (unusable by his class) as a reward should he succeed – which he did – to disconnect the pattern input console from the CPU (Carving Processing Unit).
As our cub’s sire entered the Birth Register at 9:28AM (it officialy opens at 9, but that’s only when they start to have their coffee, and if you’re unhappy about that, have fun trying to make that point to the public sector unions), he was the first Charr to declare a newborn on this fateful day. After filling out the paperwork and waiting patiently for the union-mandated coffee-break, he then spelled “Ragnar” to the Birth Register attendant, which entered it on the golem’s pattern input console, before activating it to immor
talize the new member of the Charr society in the beloved Stone of Births.
Now, Asuran technology, when well-designed and quality controlled, has lots of failsafes and redundant mechanisms to avoid embarassin
g failures. But due to the then economic hardship, the latest Rata Sum budget had felt it wise to drastically cut spending on public research, leading to a number of underfunded projects. In order to meet the deadlines, the typical process was to hire more Ph.Ds and
getting them scared enough of not graduating that they adapt to 2h sleep per night. The downside of course, was that though deadline
s were met, QC was generally thrown out of the window.
As fate would have it, that happened to be the case of the stone carving golem, who, unable to detect the presence of the pattern inp
ut console, produced the corresponding (and correct) error message, just not on the correct output. And there, in the hallowed Stone
of Births, it engraved “Keyboard Not Found”.
As one can imagine, the cub’s sire was not impressed. Multiplying the letters, administrative forms, petitions and other bribes, he f
inally had, to his great shame, to admit defeat. It is said that even on his death-bed, he was still cursing as to why good Charrs had died in droves pushing back and vanquishing the Flame Legion when “All we had to do was send them the Black Citadel Administration, if they weren’t on strike, and Flame’d have surrendered”.
This is the story of a cub that grew to be known as Ragnar only to his closest friends.
This, is the story of Keyboard Not Found of the Blood Legion.

Can anyone explain to me (quote me please so its easier to find) how lowering the damage of AOE actually makes Zergs stronger? (Serious question, i’m only looking at it from one side and id really like to see the other side of it.)
Class-based AoE skills (as opposed to siege engines) have a (stupid imho) upper limit of 5 targets. So if you’re in a small group of 5 that is being hit by an AoE attack, you’ll get hit. If you stand in a group of 10, well, you suddenly only have a 50/50 chance to take damage since only 5 people out of 10 will be randomly picked as a target. Get 20 people in the AoE (a stretch, very unlikely) and you only have 1 chance in 4 to be hit.
The main point of the compact zerging (or rather melee train) in this game is that if you have enough people in a compact area, the enemy’s AoE is rather ineffective, rarely damaging the same target twice. The more people you stack, the less AoE damage they take.
Offensively, if you stack something like 20 people dishing out AoE randomly, even nerfing the damage of those attacks, it’ll still be more than enough to fast kill any non-zerging opponent since they won’t be protected by the number of targets upper limit and will take the 20 AoE in full.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
They also mention they want to discourage the zerg mentality… and they plan on doing that by nerfing more the main counter to it? I’m rather curious as to what else they plan to do because in itself it seems pretty counterproductive.

People who transfer to tier 1 after the cut off are going to be disappointed when they find 30 mins to an hour queues for all BL.
I’d almost say that’s nothing. We already have such queues in T4 (Piken). It feels like every losing server and his dog is transferring here. On the verge of unplayable as a guild at the moment.
On one hand, i’m mightily kitten off at those people ruining the server. On the other hand, i find it hilarious since they’ll be first in line to experience the queues they generated. Let’s hope they’re rich enough to transfer to whatever will be the next project server when it’s not free anymore.

Maybe someone has an ubur use for a skill I think is useless.
[…]
Veil — never use because if I want it I take mass invis instead.
Veil has a massive advantage over MassInv: it isn’t limited to 5 targets. In WvWvW, it’s a big big difference. Cast in front of a tight melee train about to charge, it makes an entire raid disappear, and only reappear after half the opposition is dead. With the culling problems, the stealth is even longer than what the tooltip says.
So yes, in WvWvW at least, Veil is a major game changer.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
And PIKEN, you do know that in the next tier or the following ones, eventually we’ll run into someone who can put up a good fight and we’ll be held back, or worse, beaten, then the tourists will move on and we’ll have an epic fall back into the lower tiers.
This is what I’m hoping for, please let this happen before they add paid server transfers!
Indeed. Can’t happen soon enough.

Talking about hitting maps hard, Piken got it hard on their own map tonight too! Some absolutely EPIC fights tonight. I’m glad we, Gandara, managed to finally get that hills keep and even some of your north towers/
We tried to hide inside Bay and nab it before AR could get it but they couldn’t keep the wall down long enough :P Anyway again thanks for the awesome fights
The Hills battle was good fun. You got pretty unlucky on the first battle in the lord room since for some reason, the waypoint was uncontested, so after you wiped us inside, we could just respawn at the entrance of the room…
Not that it delayed you for too long mind. couldn’t do much to stop you on the second go.

Thing is, in wvwvw at least, it’s the same button as to pick up a lootbag. And due to the pace and the chance that you’ll die a horrible death or just run too far away and miss out on the (inferior) loot, you get used to hit ‘F’ as soon as the brownish-orange ‘Press F to…’ dialog appears. Without reading what it said or thinking about it. Brain goes “orange box! hit F!”.
99 times out of 100, it’s a lootbag, but every now and then i find myself wielding a banner. Or a flaming sword. I curse after the former and giggle while wielding the latter.

We basically already have a mantra of swiftness.
I use 6 runes of the centaur and the healing mantra. You get 12s of swiftness for the mantra channel + 2x 12s swiftness for every use of the heal mantra.
I’ll have to try that again tonight. I could have sworn the centaur rune swiftness only proc’ed once, at the end of the mantra channel. Nothing on the two consequent uses of the mantra charges. I’m still running with the reflection heal at the moment.

Also note I’m very serious in that I want to know if my ‘fellow mesmers’ think that the changes I suggest would be completely unfair/nullify their strength. =)
That would simply go along the flow of removing whatever is fun to use. Casual use of portals was a fair part of what i loved on the mesmer. With the 90s cooldown, it’s already bad enough, and you propose to also prevent any other skill being used until it’s opened?
Honestly, i wish they’d call it a day, bring the cooldown down to 30s, increase the actual portal duration to 20s (of course, seeing how sword 2 distortion was handled, we’d just get the portal tooltip to say 10s instead) and make the portal use self-only. Frack the others, frack the raid, frack the QQers, i want to play with my skill.
Of course, the day that happens, the next thread will be “In my opinion, time warp is ruining the game”.

~3500 kills, closing on 700 badges.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
If you’re getting a 5 to 1 kill death ratio, that means others must be doing worse. Everyone can’t have this ratio. It’s mathematically impossible.
No it’s not, considering that several people get the kill credit for a single death. Take a 3 vs 3 where 3 people die on one side, 2 on the other. If they happen to be grouped up and do reasonably similar dps, everyone get credit for every opponent death. So the surviving winner gets 3 kills for 0 deaths, the 2 dead winners each get a 3k/d ratio, and the 2 dead losers each get a 2k/d ratio. Take bigger groups, add siege weaponry and it vastly inflates.
I’m sitting on over 3500 kills for 300 deaths, and i can most definitely tell you that it’s not because of my super-skillz.

Well – clones do not get stacks from sigills or boons …. there’s many ways to see the real mesmer in the middle of his or her clones – the star ist just the most obvious one.
Indeed. It’s really particularly obvious though, since you see the star without even targetting (as opposed to boons), and without even trying to see an off-hand. There’s an obvious shiny gold star among the crowd basically saying “SHOOT HERE”. Including behind a wall if the mesmer used his stealth to hide and reappear out of LOS.

The portals cooldown is too long and duration to short to do it in PvE; again as usual they handle our PvP OPness by slamming PvE with a sledgehammer. -_-
Indeed. The 60s→90s increase in cooldown did nothing to address the portal bombing (which is a rendering engine problem in the first place rather than a balance issue but…), but it dramatically affected all the casual uses of the skill.

Doesn’t really work unfortunately. Well, it works after a fashion, but a limited fashion. After you open the first portal, you have 60s to open the second. When you did that, both portals stay open ~10s (don’t be fooled by the tooltip that says 20s), and it also takes a tiny bit of time for the portal to be usable one opened, or after you used one, for the return trip to be available. When both portals close, the skill then goes on cooldown for 90s.
It’s nice to get a prepared retreat and do a little bit of situational kiting, or to jump down from a keep into the opposition with a return ticket in hand, but it’s nothing like that old video seemed to indicate.

I don’t know about other players but personally, I find it extremely demotivating to play a game with no goals or rewards. When there’s no goals, I start to find it pointless and the content became tasteless. The game knows the best when there’s no more goals. We can see a drop of players in maps after they reached the wall. Players who used to play 5 hours per day only start to log in once every few days after they feel full satisfaction.
And 2(!) pieces of gear will retain the attention span of these players for how long? Please explain me why kittening off a reasonable portion of the player-base in order to vaguely drag back the gear-crowd for a couple weeks before they get bored again is a good idea.
