I started playing a few weeks ago with some friends, and just hit 61. I’ve really been enjoying the game, and they have been too. But, I was the one who picked Ranger. After reading all of these threads it seems I’ve chosen the wrong class. Is the new update really that detrimental to Ranger? Is it people belly aching or is it THAT bad? If it’s really that bad I’m not sure if I should reroll or not. If they can mess up a class this bad I don’t want to invest tons more time and have them mess something else up. This update has really taken away my incentive to play unless most people are just complaining. -____-
Seems like you picked the right class to me. If you’re enjoying it, that’s all that really matters. Ignore the noise on these forums and keep enjoying the things you’ve been enjoying about the class.
For PvE? The same build you were running before the patch minus Heightened Focus will still be quite good. Not as good as it was, but still good.
They do not hate rangers. They just don’t know how to balance the game correctly. Please do not misjudge them for something they didn’t do.
A ranger will always be a ranger. Stay true to yourself, and you can accomplish anything, young Ajajane. >=)
They do seem to be struggling with the ranger, and it’s been going on since before the first BWE. They just can’t seem to get the class’s foundation – it’s class mechanic, pets – to a spot where they can make the tightly focused changes the class probably needs.
That said, I still enjoy the class. And if you do too, TC, then keep doing what you’re doing.
I don’t care for GvG one way or the other, but I do find it odd that they’ve yet to implement it in the game. The only think I can think of – and call me cynical – is they’re using Structured PvP to test a system wherein they can charge people for GvG tournaments.
Actually, yes it is. Let’s take a look at what it says under character creation, shall we?
“Rangers are proficient with the bow. They rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature to slay their targets. Their loyal pets, which rangers tame and train, distract enemies while the rangers strike safely from a distance.”
They can use both types of bows. That looks like proficiency to me. They can summon nature spirits. That looks true as well. And they do in fact tame pets. So what part of that description is it that you have a problem with?
So where is that sustain we were promised?
It’s over there with the equipment, utility skills, and traits you refuse to utilize.
I do utilize them, I just don’t see the sustain still.
Yeah? Post your build. I’m very interested to see what weapons, armor, utility skills, and traits you run.
And be honest. Don’t tell us you’re 0/0/30/30/10 full sentinel’s armor with a mace/shield and Shake it Off, Balanced Stance, and Endure Pain when you’re actually running 30/30/0/0/10 full berserker’s armor with a greatsword and Bulls’ Charge, Frenzy, and For Great Justice.
Why so bitter? You can get a set if you want one. They’re not even expensive via gold for gems compared to a lot of other gear.
I suspect it’s simply a case of trolling; I wouldn’t pay him/her any attention.
So where is that sustain we were promised?
It’s over there with the equipment, utility skills, and traits you refuse to utilize.
This numbers are a joke i actually used a clerics amulet and test it right when the patch become online and i was like… this is BS, now add to this that we now need to use adrenaline in order to clean conditions so much for the passive…
Why do people keep saying this?
- Soldier Runes
- Melandru Runes
- Berserker’s Stance
- Dogged March
- Restorative Strength
- Warhorn
- Quick Breathing
- Shake it Off!
- Shrug it Off
- MendingTHEY STILL EXIST! USE THEM!
“But…but…but I’d have to give up some of my precious deeps. That’s not FAIR!!!”
Sustain shouldn’t a trade off for damage, unlike any other class, where you can build both damage AND sustain very well. Having to build a high amount of HP to sustain and giving up all damage is NOT balance
You clearly have no idea what that word means…balance. Balance is an even distribution of offense and defense. If you want more offense you sacrifice defense and are by definition unbalanced. If you want more defense you sacrifice offense and are by definition unbalanced.
These are conscious decisions you, the player, make. So if you’re having trouble staying on your feet, perhaps you should take a long, hard look at your build before you blame the developers for your problems.
I posted this in the Engineer sub-forum, but I think it’s time to bring it here.
It it my imagination, or is the range on Jump Shot bugged? It seems to have a range of about 450-500, noticeably less than what it was before the patch. Again, I could be crazy. So let me know if it’s all in my head. Thanks.
So clearly something is wrong. The question is what? And more importantly, is it costing me mah shinies!?
If you’re planning on strictly rolling with zergs why not consider Glyph of Storms? It’s another aoe you can throw down for extra tagging, and you can use it in Water Attunement to slap chill down on people trying to run away when the battle turns against them.
I wouldn’t say Fresh Air it is restricted to scepter builds, but works best with scepter, alright with dagger, and is sort of redundant with staff.
If I had 80 trait points to play with instead of just 70 I’d grab Fresh Air for my staff elementalist. Air Attunement for staff is, in my opinion, in a distant fourth as far as usefulness in combat. But if it were refreshed every time I scored a critical hit (often) I could skip through it when cycling to/from Fire, Water, and Earth Attunements just for the Electric Discharge proc. And the extra Precision would be of use, too.
I have three problems with new content every two weeks. One, I’m afraid things will be rushed, leading to bugs slipping passed QA, shortcuts being taken regarding quality, or sloppily designed/implemented content.
Two, it’s such a frantic pace that it’s not going to give the more casual players, particularly those with full time job and familial obligations, much time to complete/enjoy the new temporary content before it’s removed.
Three, it’s becoming such a focus that I feel the rest of the game is falling by the wayside. Everyone is so busy scrambling to complete temporary dungeons, temporary achievements, and obtain temporarily available items that everything else has become an afterthought. These Living Story additions haven’t solved the obvious problem that many zones are all but abandoned. I know part of that is the nature of MMOs, but I’d like to see more permanent content implemented that gives players a reason to visit all zones, not just a select few.
Edit: A fourth reason I’m against such frequent updates is much of the content consists of little more than mindless busy work. Breaking 150 dragon pinatas isn’t a testament to skill, it’s a display that your F button works. I’d like to see more meat and less filler when it comes to the updates. But with the fast turnaround on the Living Story content and Anet’s desire to keep players active they’re having to rely on these lazy sorts of achievements to keep people logged on.
(edited by darkace.8925)
It’s a terrible idea, and here’s why:
Anet is corralling PvEers into the one of the more difficult jumping puzzles…THE most grief-conducive area of the game. Many of these PvEers would struggle running this JP even if there were no PvP involved. But tacking on the fact that it’s going to be (already is) heavily camped by groups of people who know the puzzle inside and out and this is nothing but a case of lambs being led to slaughter.
Now I know a lot of players get their jollies griefing other players or scoring easy kills, but there’s simply no defending this. If you’re the type of person who likes beating down helpless victims, then live it up. Have the time of your life. But don’t pretend this is anything other than a massacre of the meek.
It was ruined.
Ever since the patch, LB Warriors have to spend 20 points in Tactics, a completely useless tree, in order to pick up the 20% cd reduction. Furthermore, as LB F1 being the only F1 skill that uses adrenaline bars even if missing, taking up cleansing ire is a pretty good idea. But that’s 20 points into defense, which I don’t really benefit from over another tree, such as arms.
Being forced down a trait line you don’t particularly care for to get a specific trait for a specific build is far from a warrior-only problem. All professions have one build or another that shares this dilemma.
ANet’s PVE intent seem to be that we all should be roaming explorers, rather than farm specific events or areas until to roll over in exhaustion. Esthetics over substance in other words.
The problem with wanting us to be roaming explorers is the things we need for the things we want (T6 mats, ori nodes, etc) are only found in a few very specific zones. If I could get the stuff for my Gift of Wood from Queensdale, Wayfarer Foothills, or any of the other lower level zones, I would never leave them. They’re more relaxed, more populated, and aesthetically pleasing. But the stuff I need can’t be found in those zones.
Something I learned WAY back in the day when I was a wee lad playing Final Fantasy VI on my SNES: conditions will always be second fiddle to direct damage. Why should I cast Blind or Poison on my enemy when I can cast Fire or Bolt instead?
Now obviously this isn’t a unviersal truth, and condtion builds can certainly shine in group/dungeon environments where the enemies don’t blow over like a house of straw in a category 5 hurricane. But in open-world PvE, where enemies offer little resistance, direct damage is the way to go. On the whole, the removal of condition stack caps won’t do much to change this.
Well, before Karka Queen there were people here in the forums asking for harder world bosses so that they would require large coordinated groups and more work to kill. Even without better rewards. They got one. Seems to be very popular.
Be careful what you wish for because you might get it.
I have two reactions to this. First, there are no doubt those who want challenging content. But the people who hop from one world event to another are generally doing so for easy money, not challenging content. And there may be those who want to be challenged, but if the challenged is presented as a group event that too few want to do then those wanting the challenge aren’t getting what they wanted.
Second, the difficulty of the event isn’t self-contained. It has an impact on the entirety of the zone. Everything from harvesting runs to simple things like using way points to get around the zone are impacted by this one event. This one event has a disproportionate impact on the zone as a whole, in my opinion.
I suggest everyone to buy the armor skins off the shop, it is possible that if they sell SIGNIFCANTLY more by selling the skins directly, they could change their marketing strategy to reflect it; which means this could end the RNG issue.
Why? The money apparently goes to NCSoft (not Arena.net) to finance their other games, like the upcoming Wildstar, which I have no interest in…
Again, if non of the money finds its way into Anet’s coffers how can they afford to continuously give us free content updates? I look forward to hearing your answer to that question.
The worst things about patch 25/6 is the community’s shortsighted overreaction to it.
Work on your warrior almost year, and ANet now is telling you just delete it. Most builds are badly nerfed from bottom level. Now you gain same dps with even lower survivability.
I’ve had a warrior since launch, I didn’t get a memo from Anet telling me to delete it.
Aside from that, it makes me sad that the place is now pretty much abandoned. Re-introduce the 200% buff and people will soon return there in droves :-P
I’m sure some would return, but I don’t know if they would do so in droves. As long as the Living Story keeps introducing new content, new achievements, and new equipment – especially when they’re temporarily available – I don’t think Southsun’s will ever see the kind of traffic it did during the Canach’s chapter of the Living Story.
No I’m not defending Anet. I’m defending a play style.
Different play styles are fine, and I myself am not a min-maxer, but peak efficiency should always be compared to peak efficiency when it comes to balancing professions. I’m not saying Anet botched the balance of this profession or that with this patch, as I think these sorts of patches need time to breathe before judgment is passed. But on a general principle kind of thing everyone who wants to go all-out should be equally effective when doing so.
Well we got a lot of warriors who refuse to to use this, but complain about no sustain.
Thats because you can’t get to 500+ per tick in full zerkers gear and ruby orbs
That’s exactly it. So much of the complaining about the lack of sustainability and the lack of crowd control countermeasures comes from the players who refuse to do anything but stack offense on top of offense.
The worst things about patch 25/6 is the community’s shortsighted overreaction to it.
Dolphins.

Engage with air. Use the new improved gust on anyone between you and the kill zone. Pop static field to prevent escape from the target area. Plant radiation field (totally OP post patch IMO) and lightning surge in the kill zone. Swap to fire to drop damage on the kill zone.
At this point would it not be better to swap to Water and drop Freezing Ground for aoe chill and Ice Spike to get some vulnerability on your targets before dropping your harder hitting fire skills?
Three times now I’ve killed a random enemy (all regular enemies, none of them sky pirates) and have immediately been prompted with a message stating “This content has been temporarily disabled. Please try again later.” Is this a bug of some kind? Or is this a roll on the loot table for a drop that hasn’t yet been enabled?

It has to be to justify that price tag.
Buying/crafting ammo ftw.
have to spend GIL
Wrong section and wrong MMO.
Ironically, rangers in that MMO weren’t “destroyed”. In that game the rangers were very effective at their role (damage).
It’s actually simple. Just don’t BUY anything and they will get the idea….. sadly, alot of players are so filthy rich in-game and in real life, that USD 1000 is peanuts to them to throw at Arenanet’s direction.
Ok, that is that.
The reason people buy all this RNG crap is because they are lazy, they just want to show off and they have ADHD……..
Nothing like painting in broad strokes, huh?
Anet did a great job bringing everyone to Southsun during the Living Story. There were plenty of events and rewards, and even farming was made more productive. The events, particularly the Queen event, were challenging because they required everyone to coordinate to keep the camps cleared.
But now that the next chapter in the Living Story is live, everyone has abandoned Southsun. It’s empty. Well, it’s almost empty. The monsters are still there, in very large numbers. The camps are always overrun, meaning the way points are almost always inaccessible.
The idea to get more people in Southsun long-term just didn’t take. Perhaps if the Queen were made a world boss that simply pops like all other world bosses – if the requirement to hold the four camps were removed – then people might drop in when she’s due to pop. But I haven’t seen anyone on my server (Blackgate) bother getting her to pop since the Southsun chapter of the Living Story ended. The added incentive apparently isn’t worth the trouble.
At the very least I think the zone could use some scaling back. Because the camps are always overrun, getting around is a bit of an hassle. This is especially true when crossing traveling through Steampipe Steading. That place is an absolute deathtrap if you don’t perfectly dodge all the cripple-inducing ranged attacks from the army of karka camping the place.
I think using the Living Story to entice people to visit abandoned zones is a good idea, but as people move when the next chapter goes live perhaps scaling the newly-raised difficulty (if it’s raised for the Living Story) of these zones back a bit to accommodate the lower population would also be a good idea.
Buying it with gold may seem like the way to go, but if Anet is looking to see how many gems they move with direct buy armor vs how much they move with rng boxes, converting gold might be working against us. I’m not saying don’t convert gold to gems, I’m just giving you all something to consider.
I just cleared four mobs from the holographic dragon and each had loot to be had. There were no other prompts for the interact key, and I have both aoe loot and auto loot on. Yet I was still required to press the loot key four times.
I love a lot of the work done for Engineers in this patch, but I just don’t get this trait. As others have said it doesn’t make sense. Pistol builds have tons of conditions but don’t use +% damage increases, and rifle builds don’t put out a lot of conditions so this isn’t that helpful for those. Grandmaster trait? Really?
If they ever add condition duration/power food I’m keen to give this trait a shot on my power/cc hybrid rifle build. The uptime on cripple, vulnerability, burn, and bleed on top of the 10% damage boost from Rifle Mod and another 5% if I choose to run a Sigil of Force isn’t anything to sneeze at.
As much as people hate rng, I think a fun alternative would have been adding chill, weakness, or blind (alone or any combination thereof) as possible procs from rifle and pistol attacks. Much more interesting and useful than a boring, weak, flat damage buff.
For some reason your post reminded me of the ammo mods in Mass Effect. And that, in turn, got me thinking how much I’d love a sigil with an X% chance to knock down on critical hit.
My brother has been working a ton lately and missed the fireworks achievement and dragon helms (which he sorely wanted). I’d love to see him get another shot at this achievement.
Sitting Duck cripples and inflicts vulnerability, and the rifle’s Net Shot has a fairly low cooldown. For an adept trait in the Firearms trait line, this one seems like a no-brainer for rifle users.
I’ll second this, thanks for the update, ANet!
If that’s an engineer, you win best in show. That would be a fantastic look for an engineer.
It makes no sense to have the greatsword trait that procs Might on critical hits in the critical hit trait line?
For Ranger, darkace, we don’t even need to look at the builds to know that. They halved the damage for almost every pet we have, making the only viable build at this point for Ranger the Trap Ranger build. BM has been destroyed, at least in its offensive capabilities.
And reduced the crit rate of our most-used pet(s) by 75%
If it’s the most-used pet, it’s the most-used for a reason. Perhaps it was too good? Perhaps a nerf was warranted?
They said this patch would make unviable builds viable, well that clearly hasnt happened the viable builds are more viable and the unviable even more unviable.
You’ve determined that all by yourself? You’ve theory crafted and tested multiple builds for all eight professions and determined that none of the less popular builds were made any more viable? Man, you work fast.
Judging by the cut of this forum’s jib today, I’m going to venture a guess and say it provides a sea of Warrior tears, turning the entire arena into one big underwater fight.
As an aside, I’m going to guess Regen or Vigor.
lol
the money they make in the gem store is going to NCsoft to make wild star <—-I think that is the name or the next aion.
no point in giving them money and those gears are ugly for a charr
Yeah, and all this free content we’ve been getting over the months has been paid for with fairy dust and unicorn farts, right?
30/25/0/0/15
I wouldn’t really listen to the people saying greatsword is terrible now, it’s 5# got a buff. The main thing it lost is 9% crit from one of the traits that got moved, but that affects most warrior builds now not just greatsword.
Yeah, I don’t know what they’re talking about either. It’s not quite as good as it was before, but it’s far from useless. 30 points in Strength can get greatsword users +25% damage. That’s hardly something to dismiss as useless. But crying is what fotm players do best.
Grind for 4 months to get Twilight.
ArenaNet sh*ts all over it.
Nice.
Twilight was and always will be a vanity thing. You didn’t get it because it made you better, you got it to show it off. The fact that the greatsword build just got nerfed does not prevent you from showing off your vanity item.
The new Stomp is especially nice, particularly when traited (20/0/20/0/30).
I didn’t even catch the CD on Stomp dropping to 45 seconds. I was running Physical Training for a 48 second CD and the extra damage, and was bummed to lose that trait when Berserker’s Power moved to the grandmaster tier. But the reduction in CD means I’ll only be missing out on the extra damage if I forgo PT. But with PT it would be a 36 second CD. Hmm…
