And I’ll wager your family doctor works close to double the number of hours per week than anyone selling cheap, dirty burgers at Fry’s.
Do you have any idea of how many hours peer week Chinese factory workers work? Do you really think a successful doctor works more than that, and that those who don’t aren’t used to receiving considerably higher salaries?
Did I mention Chinese factories? No, I didn’t. I mentioned Fry’s burger joint. And last I checked, Fry’s burger joint isn’t a Chinese factory.
Grind is mindless. Grind is easy. Grind is basically cattering to the lowest denominator, in order to sell more. It’s the opposite of skill, intelligence, ability…
And therein lies the rub. Reward players for skill and bad players complain. Reward players for grinding and casual players complain. Make rewards easily obtained by everyone and hardcore and elitist players complain. There’s literally no system that will please everyone.
I personally wish the game rewarded skillful play over everything else; and I suppose it will once GvG tournaments are eventually implemented, but I’m not a sPvP player so that’s no personal comfort to me. But I’d rather them err on the side of “reward for grind” than “reward for everyone” if it keeps players playing more. I say this even though I personally detest games that require grinding. But there’s not a single aspect of this game for which grind-obtained items are required.
Grind rewards time spent, not skill. Real life rewards skill, not time spent. Example: Chinese factory workers work a lot of hours per week, yet get very small salaries. Steve Jobs worked less hours per day, yet he got a very high salary. That’s how real life works. Grinding is a game’s version of working in the nearest Fry’s selling cheap, dirty burgers. Being a skilled player is a game’s version of being someone who follows a career, like a laywer. Guess which one deserves a reward, and which one deserves to be left rotting in a basement?
Those MD’s, CPA’s, and law degrees require an incredible amount of “time spent” to earn. And I’ll wager your family doctor works close to double the number of hours per week than anyone selling cheap, dirty burgers at Fry’s.
What are you going to report them for they are following the rules set forth by AN by using the voting mechanism how about you set up a petition to make the vote mechanism a super majority instead of wasting their time with frivolous reports.
The fact that is can be abused isn’t justification for actually abusing the system. ANet is not to blame for the lack of decency and respect displayed by many online gamers (or internet users in general).
As a FFXI player (7 years) and someone who has followed (but not played) WoW I can tell you that you, TC, that you don’t know what a grind is.
After running a few Heart Events in Sparkfly Fen, I’m now the proud (not really) owner of more than 150 stacks of Mithril Harvesting Tools.
Something that’s going to hurt when I delete this guy (after magically finding room to store all the tools) is losing a character with Black Dye unlocked. I checked the price of all the dyes I’d be losing, and all were less than a gold except for the Black, which was 10 gold. Replacing that whenever I get around to making a new Thief character (I’m looking at you, Tengu…make it happen) is going to hurt.
ps. i think anet just hates anything that is controled by AI and helps the player
As someone who is still hoping we’ll see heroes (ala GW) implemented at some point, I sure hope not.
Sure I still advocate a cap on the daily reward laurel per character, but I don’t advocate the favoring of 1 alt vs multiple when the multiple alt player is putting in more time.
“You have been playing for 13 hours. Please take a break.”
So as of yesterday, playing alts became pretty much impossible if you want to gear them up at your own pace.
“I want the best gear in the game for each of my eight characters and I WANT IT NOW!!!”
/stamps foot
/tantrum faceDon’t be absurd. “I want it now” is a far cry from “eight months is too long.”
As someone without a main…as someone who plays five alternate characters equally…I know and have accepted that it is going to take me more time and money to do anything a player with one main character might do. This applies to everything from leveling to crafting to gearing up to stocking up on consumables. If you guys whining about how long it’s going to take to gear your alts in top-tier/near top-tier equipment don’t realize the extra work involved then that’s a YOU problem, not a game problem.
You could stockpile salvage kits and non-ori gather tools if you have bank space to hoard them. In each map, there is (at least) one karma vendor for each type of tool, so your level 41 has access to at least copper and iron tools, if not steel.
I think I can get Mithril gathering tools from one of the charr zones. It’s not as good as Orich, but it’s not a bad alternative. Unfortunately, I’m not interested in the lowest tier of salvage kits (which is all karma vendors offer), but that thought had crossed my mind.
Also, stock up on any crafting food ingredients you can grab – sure, you may not like crafting now, but it’s an easy way to get some quick levels!
I on the contrary, I greatly enjoy crafting. But I’ve already got 250 of every single karma ingredient in the game (give or take 40, depending on how frequently it is used in the crafting of food). It’s not that I don’t want the ingredients, it’s that I don’t need them. And more importantly, I don’t have the bank space for any more of them.
One last thing you could do (if it works, not in game right now so I don’t know for sure) is go to your home borderlands in WvW, buy gear from the karma vendors there, and toss it in the Mystic Forge. I’m not sure what level the lowest yellow (rare) equipment are, so maybe check if you could MF greens -> yellows or go with blues -> greens.
I’ve not played with the Mystic Forge at all, so I don’t know if this would work (or be worthwhile) or not.
Hi I like the rest of you bought into this game but I feel like I was punched in the gut and laughed at.
This game was suppose to built on not having grind. This was one of Anet’s key manifesto points however now:
1. Legendary weapon grind
They’ve said from day one that legendary weapons would require significant investment of time and money.
[quote=1322688;Revolution.6301:2. Gold Grind – you need atleast 100 gold for the ideal build and armor you want.[/quote]
You need to learn the difference between ideal and optimal. It’s ideal to have a car to get you to work.
I’m not going to respond to the rest of your post. Frankly, I’m not even going to bother reading it. You’ve already struck me as the typical, whiney, “I want instant gratification and I want it NOW, and God help you if you make me work for anything” type of poster.
And for all *****ing and moaning your ilk is doing lately, if ANet went the other way we’d have just as much *****ing and moaning from the other side of the coin about how there’s nothing to do, there’s no reason to play, and there’s no way to show everyone just how special I am because I have this elite gear. Frankly, both camps are tiresome whiners and have turned the General Discussion forum into the * and Moan forum.
My response to both camps is this, if you don’t like it, then. don’t. play. It really is that simple.
So as of yesterday, playing alts became pretty much impossible if you want to gear them up at your own pace.
“I want the best gear in the game for each of my eight characters and I WANT IT NOW!!!”
/stamps foot
/tantrum face
Try and get to orr and buy the jewelry boxes?:’)
I thought about that. I also thought about stockpiling Orichilium gathering tools, but in both cases I’d have to get to and survive Orr. As a lowly level 41, I don’t think that’s going to be an option.
You guys have any other suggestions?
…um… what? I could easily get my char to cantha and get them lev 20 armor within an hour from rolling a new char. Without using any advantage from previous chars. in fact, I could do it well before i was even level 20 (which was doable in a day-two easily)…
Not sure why would you consider it to be hard. If you do, i’m surprised how did you manage to get even a few HoM points, less alone 30.
If by “level 20” gear, you’re referring to HoM gear, then your anecdotal account of “ease” of acquisition is no more solid evidence than my anecdotal evidence of ease of acquiring exotic gear. The difference is I’m not resorting to ad hominem to try to prove my point.
Getting collector weapons and top tier armor took less effort than getting one exotic eq in this game (and i’m not even talking about ascended).
As someone with both (HoM weapons and armor and exotic gear), I’ll have to disagree with you. It took me considerable time and focused effort to get the HoM weapons and armor in GW and I’ve obtained many pieces of exotic gear during the course of casual non-dungeon PvE play in GW2.
This way, PvE becomes the traditional RPG experience where you can grind one “main” so you feel like you’re “progressing”, meanwhile the people who like playing with different classes and builds have WvW and sPvP.
What about the people who enjoy playing with different classes and builds but have no interest in WvW or sPvP?
Do you want the same old crap recycled over and over again, or do you want new experiences?
I’ll take “the same old” with the stuff that works and “fresh new take” on the stuff that doesn’t. Leveling, in my opinion, should always be from 1 to cap. I think ANet threw the players who don’t like leveling a bunch of bones; level increased to cap when entering PvP, level increased to cap when entering WvW, experience given out like candy on Halloween, etc.
There are “account bound” starter kits for each of the crafting disciplines. But they cost 3 laurels each, so I won’t be able to report my findings until Wednesday.
Then run FotM. What exactly is it you people want? What other MMO hands out top-tiered items for nothing?
GW1 – and it was good.
Funny, because I had to work for every single weapon and suit of armor displayed in my Hall of Monuments. I guess I missed the “Free Best Gear in the Game” Vendors in Lion’s Arch. Bummer, because that could have saved me a ton of time.
You said that’s how games work. If you use sweeping generalisations to justify your case, expect to get picked up on it.
I would think that given the context of the conversation you guys would be able to realize I’m not comparing Guild Wars 2’s leveling system to games like Super Mario Brothers, FIFA World Cup, or Frogger. Use a little sense, people.
Quake 3 doesn’t work like that.
What I’m saying is, if you say “games work like that”, you’re dismissing a whole buttload of game types.
That’s pretty narrow-minded.
Quake 3 isn’t an MMORPG, either.
So why should i that don’t enjoy the leveling process more than once need to do it on every character?
Because that’s how games work. You start at level 1, and you work your way up to the level cap. I don’t know why you would expect it to be any other way.
What you’re arguing is an opinion. Just because you find leveling through PvE boring doesn’t mean it’s a flawed system. There are other people who quite thoroughly enjoy the PvE leveling process.
Did you play gw1?
Yes. And I personally found leveling in that game to be boring. Like I said, “opinions”.
I was one of the few dedicated SW Guardians. This change basically killed us who were very few to begin with. SW build was underrated, the CC from hammer was amazing…
Now SW is completely useless. By the time you summon them, they are dead. I’m sure some adjustments will be made with the next balance/nerf fix..
As a HoW user, myself, I can attest that you can still summon it and pop it’s knockdown. But this update certainly makes the “not destroyed upon use” trait all but worthless.
Many of the chests in this game are decorative; they’re furnishings. Those that can be opened will be target-able and you’ll get the option to open them when moving into close range.
Though I haven’t earned enough Laurels to purchase them, I’m keen on the crafting starter sets and the crafting material bags offered by Laurel Vendors.
Yeah Aisina.. Thats what i was getting at.. I play the game a ton. I play on many different alts – I do what the group needs. Hey we’re doing AC and we dont have an ele yet? guess what – Ill play ele!
But like you said. Dailys on the account dont help me gear everyone. I’m full exotic on 6 toons so far – It will be 8 before I ever consider their “end game” legendary skins. I was happy with that call. I’m NOT happy to take 6 months to get every toon on par.
=(
Then run FotM. What exactly is it you people want? What other MMO hands out top-tiered items for nothing? ANet is giving you the traditional method to obtain them (run dungeons), and they’re giving you an alternative, casual-friendly method of obtaining them, long-term though it may be.
yeah they said in the manifesto that gw2 would have the same leveling time as gw1, which is odd because it only took me 15 hours to max in gw1 but 80 hours in gw2..
Jokes aside, once youve level a toon to 80 not many of us are all that keen to do it again with the time required.
Not trying to insult your game at all anet, the gameplay and mechanics are wonderful but pve is a bit of a drag sometimes :>
What you’re arguing is an opinion. Just because you find leveling through PvE boring doesn’t mean it’s a flawed system. There are other people who quite thoroughly enjoy the PvE leveling process.
Has anybody grabbed one of the laurel vendor’s crafting item bags? If so, what’d you get?
I don’t know, but I was surprised that all tiers are priced the same.
Why not make lvl’s account wide so if i lvl up to 80 and make a new alt i don’t have to go through the same content again? That way i don’t have to spend so much time on making alt’s that i can use in www.
Same content? You are aware that there are no fewer than two, and in many instances three or four, zones for any given level range, right?
Yeah sure It’s not nescessary for you to have exotics either – you do great in them greens. Thanks for pugging with us. At least I got my rez daily…
Please. If you’re half as elite as you’re pretending to be you’d have a set group and wouldn’t have room for puggers. Learn2elitist.
You don’t need ascended item in wvw. The 10 stat increase won’t save your life.
If the ascended items are not important, then we can safely remove them from the game, right?
Important? Sure. Necessary? Absolutely not.
Dude, calm down. The developers have read your post and are now aware of it. If there’s indeed a problem, they’ll look into it and eventually fix it. But fixing it is going to take time, and it’s not going to happen in the middle of the night. Spamming your own topic event 5 to 10 minutes isn’t going fix anything tonight. If you simply cannot play the game as it is, call it a night and go do something else.
Hey guys. I’m going to delete a level 41 character to free up the slot for another, but I’d hate to see all that accumulated Karma go to waste. Is there anything worthwhile I can purchase with it? Note that recipes don’t interest me, and I already have plenty of the X in Bulk cooking ingredients. So, any suggestions?
Longbow. burst skill AoE is huge 3 is pretty big and 2 will go through multiple enemies. and the most important reason for this being the best tagging weapon is because its RANGED.
The longbow’s 3 has the same CD timer as the greatsword’s and they are both limited to hitting 5 enemies. But the LB’s 3 fires a slower moving projectile while the GS’s fires off very quickly. If you’re correct and LB’s 2 does indeed pierce, then perhaps I should give it another try.
So I’m running an event in the Infinity Crucible, and after killing an enemy a chest appeared. Having read that uncommon items will now be dropped in chests instead of looted from corpses, I eagerly went to discover what fortune had bestowed upon me. But the chest, seemingly embedded into the floor (clipping issue), offered no prompt. I could not interact with it in any way. Worse still, I’ll never know if that’s the chest that was going to drop my legendary precursor.
Correct me if I’m wrong (I don’t do Fractals), but isn’t the ascended gear offered by Laurels vendors just an alternative version (and thus means of acquisition) of something that’s already available in the game? If so, the gear treadmill began some time ago and is a 100% optional treadmill.
I’m interested to see what goodies the new Laurels hold for crafters, so feel free to share the results you’ve had opening the new Crafting Materials and Crafting Starter Sets.
Thank you Darkace for your suggestion on ways to spend my time…
I don’t know how my post could have possibly upset you, but it appears it has. And so I offer apologies for whatever it is I said that has offended you.
Is the greatsword the best weapon for “tagging” mobs in Dynamic Events? Or have I overlooked another weapon with bigger AoE attacks on a shorter cooldown that the GS?
I found the culprit. Being a man of the Vigil, I never bothered to actually enter the Chantry of Secrets instance (saving that for another character that will join that order). Thanks guys.
According to the achievement tracker, I’m at 174/175. But I’ve 100%‘d every Krytan zone. Is this bugged? Or is there something I’m missing? Thanks.
Historically, wise rulers had food stores ready against droughts and famines. Add that to what’s been metioned and it is possible to have held out for a bit.
If Adelbern was anything, it wasn’t wise.
I thank all of you for your helpful responses. I should have posted the names and levels of the areas I have farmed but they would include everything north of Orr. I have been to all those areas with no luck. However, today I am going back to Lornar’s Pass and see if the mobs there have re-stocked their bags. I farmed another thirteen hours with two breaks away from keyboard and only gained thirty-one butters and three oranges but I did pick up a few exotics and rares which was a surprise, especially off the dredges. Thanks again for the tips and locations. I will definately give those another try today.
I can’t help but feel your time would be more productive farming something that has a better drop rate and selling those to purchase your oranges, chocolate, and butter. As a strict open-world PvE’er I can’t attest to this personally, but many people claim you can make very good money running dungeons. There might be other alternatives that can give you a better return for your time, thus allowing you to simply purchase what you need.
Did I say anything about Final Fantasy? no I referenced DnD ( Dungeons and dragons )
That’s all well and good, but the concept of leaping Dragoons was popularized by Final Fantasy VI, not D&D.
…not the real world Asian Calvary men.
That’s all well and good, but the term Dragoon as it relates to mounted military soldiers is European, not Asian.
Again sounds like another plee to insert mounts in which we do not need.
That’s all well and good, but that’s just your opinion. And it’s one that TC apparently doesn’t share.
So you take the idea of a dragoon ( which is a foot solider that specializes in dragon combat with abilities that allow him or her to leap great distances [ as per DnD ] ) and made it into a plee for mounts to be put into the game which are not needed.
Dragoons were mounted soldiers LONG before Masashi Miyamoto even knew what video games were.
For Ranger’s, it can be annoying to run 1000+ to pick up loot every time you kill something with a longbow. What I propose to alleviate this [admittedly minor] annoyance is another mode to which we can toggle our Pets. In addition to Guard and Avoid Combat mode, I propose a Fetch mode that will make them loot nearby corpses.
IMO, daily achievements for city-based mini games would be annoying.
Keep in mind that they said they’re going to give us more options for Daily Achievements and let us choose from them the ones we want to do. So one of those options per day being a city-based mini game wouldn’t hurt anyone who doesn’t want to do them.
Double post, sorry.
extra bag slots per character is 400 gems.
If you don’t buy gems, you will have limited space and thus need bigger bags. If you want more space but don’t want to spend a bit of gold, you will need to spend the gems and use the cheaper bags. Where as if you don’t buy gems, you’ll need the 20 slotters to have reasonable storage per char.
You’re talking about 32 gold for an extra 8 slots if upgrading all four default bag slots from 18-slotters to 20-slotters. I don’t see anything reasonable about that; especially considering how many extra bag slots you could purchase if converting that 32 gold into gems.
Why does a Ferrari cost so much more than my Toyota Camry? They’re both cars.
The performance of a Ferrari is vastly superior to that of your Toyota Camry. The performance of a 20-slot bag is only marginally better than that of an 18-slot bag, yet it’s priced as if it were vastly superior.
