Trahearne leading against all dragons?

in Lore

Posted by: darkace.8925

darkace.8925

The best way to keep Trahearne is to relegate him to an Eisenhower-eque role (planning the strategy far away from the front lines). The best way to get rid of Trahearne is to have him assassinated by some doomsday cult of crazed people welcoming the dragons and, with them, the end of the world.

that said, Trahearne would sit much better with me if he ends up joining Destiny’s Edge and the lot of them lead the Pact from whatever post they are most effective. They have the resources (Pact), the experience in fighting dragons and most, if not all, of them hold positions of renown, respect and authority over their own cultures (to whatever extend such things are possible)

I cannot possibly think of a less interesting scenario. Destiny’s Edge bores me to death, and I hope…I PRAY…that band of Mary Sues dies at some point in the near future. As the writers are obviously very emotionally invested in these characters, I realize it will never happen. But I really hope it does.

best role for a WvW newb?

In what role would a WvW newb best serve his server?
– Offense – join the zerg
– Defense – man the walls
– Guerrilla – avoiding the zerg
– Logistics – escorting dolyaks

I’m thinking about getting my feet wet in WvW, but I know a lot of players take pride in server rankings. The last thing I want to do is muck it up in WvW while some skilled player’s talents go wasted in the queue. Any advice? Thanks.

Guild Wars 2 : Tank profession?

in Players Helping Players

darkace.8925

It boils down to this:
– Warriors survive in part through high defense and high health pools.
– Guardians survive in part through high defense and damage offsetting/mitigating abilities.
– Both survive in part through dodging and, if you wish, blocking.

My recommendation? Go with whichever of the twos’ profession-specific mechanic you think sounds more interesting. That, or use two of your five character slots to level one of each to, say, level 20 before deciding.

Why has no one brought up the fact that in the game the sun always rises and sets in the west and the moon always rises and sets in the east. Now this could just be an engine mechanic we’re all supposed to ignore. It could also mean the world doesn’t revolve around an axis. If it’s the latter, it certainly adds an interesting consideration when discussing the physical nature of Tyria.

time to put the final touches on my Guardian

in Guardian

darkace.8925

Hello fellow Guardians. I’ve been sitting on my level 80 Guardian while leveling my other characters. I’ve been spending what little gold I scrounge up slowly upgrading all of my characters’ bags to 18-slotters, so I’ve been content to sit on my combination of rare and masterwork equipment. But as I near that goal (I’ve a ways to go still, but I’m inching closer) I’ve been eying exotic equipment trying to get an idea of what equipment I want and how best to go about obtaining it.

As with all of my characters, my Guardian is built for PvE (primarily of the open world variety), and I run solo as often as I do with friends. I run a mace and shield for most situations, switching to a staff when tagging mobs during busy Dynamic Events. My traits are 30/0/0/20/20, and my utilities are Hammer of Wisdom for extra dps, Sanctuary for “oh crap!” moments, and the Signet of Judgment.

Now for the nitty gritty…the equipment. I’m looking to land somewhere in that sweet spot of “never dying, but things take way too long to kill” and “destroying enemies, unless they bring a friend or two”. Basically I’m looking for a nice mix of being able to kill things in PvE efficiently while maintaining the ability to stay on my feet in even when the numbers are stacked against me.

My armor is going to be a full set of Soldier’s armor (Power, Toughness, Vitality). I’ve picked up the helmet from Ascalon Catacombs, and I’ll probably snag the rest using Karma. My mace will be Berserker’s (Power, Precision, Critical Damage). I’m not yet sure what I’ll grab for my shield.

I had originally planned to run Vitality/Power/Healing Power trinkets, but unfortunately that particular grouping of attributes is only available via Crests. So that’s a no go. Now I’m considering Emerald (Toughness/Power/Precision), Chrysocola (Condition Damage/Power/Vitality), or Sapphire (Healing Power/Power/Toughness). I’m also considering Beryl (Power/Vitality/Critical Damage), but with a low Precision I’m not sure I’ll get much mileage out of the extra Critical Damage.

As for Runes, I’m thinking of running a full set of Superior Runes of Soldier (though with no shout skills, I’d not run a sixth of this type), Warrior, or Dolyak. There are a few other sets I’m looking at, but they don’t look to be as effective as any of the above. I’ve not yet narrowed down the list of possible Sigils I’ll run.

Now before nailing down exactly what attributes I want to stack, there are a few things I’ve got to bear in mind. First, I’ve got to prioritize the attributes that will best get my build to where I’m wanting to be. Primary attributes are obvious: Power, Toughness, Vitality. Complimentary attributes could be any mix of the following: Precision, Healing Power, Condition Damage.

The second thing I’ve got to keep in mind is the diminishing effects. There’s a fine line between loading up on an attribute and overkill. Unfortunately, I’ve no idea where this line lies in regards to any of the attributes I’ve listed above. 3,000 Attack and Armor with about 20,000 Health as targets, with whatever is left over going toward Precision, Healing Power, Condition Damage, or some combination of the three, are the targets I’ve set myself. I don’t even know if achieving all of the numbers on one build is even possible, so I may very well have to adjust my goals if the numbers don’t bear out.

So there it is. If you’ve stuck with this post to this point, I’m assuming it’s because you’re interested in giving me feedback. So any and all advice you want to throw my way would be most appreciated. Thanks.

With what gear would an open-world PvE condition necromancer get the most mileage?
– Berserker’s (Power/Precision/Critical Damage)
– Rampager’s (Precision/Power/Condition Damage)
– Carrion (Condition Damage, Power, Vitality)
– Rabid (Condition Damage, Precision, Toughness)

Traits are 30/20/0/0/20. Skills are Scepter/Focus, Corrosive Poison Cloud, Epidemic, and Signet of Spite, though I’m considering dumping Epidemic for Blood is power. Suggestions and advice are most welcome. Thanks.

The Cantha Thread [Merged]

Cantha was my favorite GW1 region to work on. And I worked on every GW release. I know a lot of the dev team loved it and would love to revisit it. I kinda agree with critickitten about the negative aspect of tight corridors. Most of that came from hitting technological limits while trying to keep the epic quality of the concept art. I think we could do some really amazing things with those themes in our new engine. Certainly nothing is ruled out. I certainly encourage anyone to express your desire for a Cantha region in GW2 in a positive and friendly way. It could be years away, but it’s worth asking for.

I’d love to see what you guys could do with that sprawling tinderbox of a city now that you’ve got an extra axis to play with. But we are given the chance to revisit Cantha, please don’t un-jade the Jade Sea.

I dug the uniqueness of the sprawling Kaineng City, the petrified Echovald Forest, and especially the jade Jade Sea. The rest of it, the stereotypical Asian setting in a fantasy world, I don’t care what you do with. But leave those three specific things as close to their original incarnations as you can.

I’ve got a few noob questions for you guys regarding upgrades.

1. If someone (an exotic, usually) has two slots and one of them is pre-loaded with a rune (or sigil in the case of a weapon), is the second (open) slot strictly for gemstones, crests, and the like?

2. Dose adding sigils to a weapon add any kind of particle effect? Say I added a sigil of fire to a mace, are there any flame effects on the mace itself (not counting the flame blast from crit. procs)?

Told ya they were noob questions. But thanks for any clarification that can be offered.

Least friendly MMO out there?

Sounds like the Fractals / Ascended gear patch worked, then! Prior to Nov. 15th this was the most friendly MMO I had played, with players who helped each other, spoke over in map chat and generally were all around sociable. I guess now that the Nov. 15th patch has come and gone, and it’s drawn in the WoW crowd while running off the GW1 crowd, things have changed a bit.

Shame. But, I bet all the WoW players are happy!

You guys speak of the GW1 crowd like they’re some kind of paragon of sainthood. Let me tell you a little story about my first real experience with the GW1 crowd.

I picked that game up about two years ago, long after it’s initial release. My first character was a Warrior. Shortly after becoming Ascended, I decided to give PvP a try. So I take my Warrior, by no means meta’d, to the Random Arena. And in my first ever match, a PUG mind you, I’m told that I suck (and I no doubt did) and it’s demanded of me by two of my teammates that I drop from the group. I didn’t, and so they reported me for leaching.

If that’s the GW1 crowd of which you speak, then I’d say it doesn’t matter if they stay or go or if the WoW community moves in.

Nobody says a thing in this game. It’s so odd, and makes me want to play less and less because it feels stale like a single player RPG with a bad story line.

You’re right, nobody does anything social…

Ultimate farming game -> Guild Wars 2

GW2 was meant to be “a game for fun” and it only took 3 months for Anet to notice people who play for fun like me and you are not enough to get billions, so they quickly put in some traditional MMO features to rack in more users.

If obtaining the penultimate weapon in an MMO is the only means by which you can have fun, then I’d suggest that you should find something else to play.

By the way, it didn’t take ArenaNet three months to implement Legendary weapons; they’ve been in the game since day one. But coming from a guy who complained that the Warrior’s only source of Swiftness was their elite skill, I’m not at all surprised that you didn’t know that.

– every class is underpowered
– every class is overpowered
– every class is bugged to the point of unplayable
– there’s too much grind

– gear doesn’t matter
– gear means everything
– rewards should be easily obtained

Did I miss anything? About the only thing you guys seem to agree on is that Trahearne is an insufferable git. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think the game a bad one and the only reason you guys stick around is to punish yourselves for some crime/sin you’ve committed. When choosing traits from the Firearms line, I’m wondering if I’d get more mileage out of Knee Shot and Sitting Duck or any combination of Rifled Barrel, Hair Trigger, and Rifle Mod. If the former is the case, would you recommend throwing Precise Sights into the mix? Or is Vulnerability stacking not very cost-effective?

In case it helps, I’m looking at PvE (Dungeons optional), mostly of the solo variety. I haven’t decided what stats I’m going to focus on, but it’s probably going to be P/P/T or P/P/Crit%. I’ll be running Incendiary Powder, so CDam is also an option. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

I selected my character and jumped back in, but was promptly kicked back to the character select screen and received the same message. I jumped back in again and nothing else happened.

Thirty minutes passed and I tried to sell something on the Trading Post, only to have the TP blanked out and a message informing me I must login to use this function. I minimized the client and saw that my GW2 forum account had been logged out. Is this a function of my being timed out of the forums and it somehow affecting my game connection? Or should i be very worried that my password has somehow been compromised? Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I checked my email, and I had three authorization requests from China (I’ve had these before, but I’ve trusted the email authentication system to this point). I didn’t know about the Google mobile app authenticator, so I installed and linked that to my account.

Oddly enough, on my Security page (which I’ve never had reason to think of checking until tonight) it showed two people in China logged onto my account (at the same time I was). It also had a “trusted” address from another state. I disconnected/removed all three of these.

I’ve logged out and logged back into the game to check ensure the authenticator was working properly (a little peace of mind before hitting the sack is never a bad thing), but was not prompted to enter the authentication code. Does this thing not work? Or does it never ask for a code when logging on from an ISP set to “trust” in the email authentication system? Any help you guys can offer is appreciated.

I suspect they’ll let us visit Cantha before they let us visit Elona. Reason being they’ll want to do everything to draw in the Asian market.

Whatever you choose, you might want to consider the Crafting Starter Sets available from Laurel vendors for 3 Laurels. They’ll give you a bunch of materials to get you on your way.

Edit: If you want to do both Huntsman and Leatherworker, logging is a simple task and raw leather pieces are generally very cheap to purchase from the Trading Post. The only materials that will cost you are the fine materials, and to a much lesser extent, the cloth scraps.

No, it’s only for that character.

Even if you delete the character and create a new one in the same slot you’ll lose the extra bags.

Okay. Doesn’t really seem to be worth it then :/

I guess it depends on how you approach it. For me, I’m willing to give $10 a month to the game. A self-imposed subscription, if you will. That gives me 800 gems to do whatever I want with, every month.

1. My 4 characters each have an extra bag slot.
2. I have 2 extra slots in my bank.
3. I got the witch’s outfit on my main.
4. I bought a 25 stack of fine transmutation stones when they had a 50% off sale on those.

I think that’s everything thus far, might be missing something. That’s been totally worth it to me. I know folks who go out drinking every weekend, or maybe go to the movies every weekend. I don’t do those things. $10/mo to contribute to what I do like to do, that doesn’t seem all that much…for me.

25 stacks? As in 25 stacks of 250? As in 6250? That’s a LOT of fine transmutation stones. Now if they don’t stack to 250, then please disregard my puzzlement.

If you have a character (or characters) that are in their 70s-80s, and decked out mostly in blues/greens, this this would provide some upgrades, and seems fine for the cost.

It is hardly “fine for the cost”. Consider that the boxes cost 5 Laurels and the Ascended accessories 30. Even if the boxes cost only 1 Laurel I’d consider it too much. There are just far easier ways to deck out a fresh lvl 80 character than to spend your very limited Laurels on these boxes.

Then do those “far easier” things to deck out your level 80 character and save your Laurels?

I’m with you, TC. One of my favorite FPS’s of all time is Battlefield 1942. I played the game because the gameplay was fun. I had everything I needed unlocked the moment I installed the game onto my computer. I didn’t have to play for hours before I finally got access to the weapon I wanted to use; and I didn’t have to grind for hours more to unlock the attachments I wanted to use on that weapon. So I dove in and had a great time.

FPS’s these days have experience levels, and weapon unlocks, and weapon attachment unlocks, and weapon camouflage unlocks, and call sign unlocks. And when you’ve unlocked all there is to unlock you can Prestige, which unlocks yet more stuff by voluntarily giving up everything you’re already unlocked and starting over. And of course you have to have achievements to chase and leaderboards to climb. Lost in the pursuit of all this superfluous bull crap is the issue of whether or not you even enjoy the game for the gameplay.

At least allow each account to obtain one legendary, and anything beyond will be through more heavy gold spending.

Not even saying some extreme skill challenge, something simple like storyline quest, get it over with since the mats will still cost a ton after that update anyway.

Yeah, because everyone’s going to feel real accomplished when they’re one of 10,000 other players running around with Twilight or The Dreamer.

GW2 PvE isnt competitive so it needs something ells to drive you forward

Not quite. I was driven by the desire to have fun. The game offered that. The community offered that.

I didn’t feel compelled to play because I wanted or needed to level up, earn achievements, unlock new weapons or weapon attachments, earn weapon or armor skins, obtain titles, climb leaderboards, or any of the other superfluous bull crap developers these days feel they need to use to keep gamers interested.

And I don’t want to get into the semantics of “goals” vs “carrots”, but a goal can be anything from beating a game to wasting an hour a day before starting homework/studying/making dinner/going to bed. A carrot is something introduced into a game that players want, and therefor are willing to invest large amounts of time pursuing, thus extending the life of the game.

I can’t speak much for the other points as everyone here seems to have done a well enough job on that already, but IMO the gold grind is a bit much in this game. In fact, I’ve pretty much reconciled that my toons will never see more than maybe one or two exotics of any kind that compliment their particular builds. For example, for my Necromancer’s build, I would require an exotic scepter with rabid stats. Well the only one available(below 100k) is Lidless Eye, which is a whopping 99 gold. I’ve only ever had 10g at any one time and that took roughly a month to acquire. If I bought gems, given the exchange rate last week, I would have needed to shell out $95 to be able to afford it. I know that people do this, but I can’t personally rationalize spending that much on a single in-game item, just for the stats.

I would run dungeons and such to try and get gold/items but the problem with that is I don’t have the gear to do so as it requires me to spend massive amounts of gold(or karma for a few particular items) to get it. Feels like I’m stuck in a Catch 22 with nothing I can do about it. Personally, this is more likely to push me away from the game rather than rev me up for a long intensive grind that spans months and months that in the end will only result in a marginally lacking reward as the toon would have only acquired ONE item. By the posts I’ve read, I know most of you had 500 gold and 300k karma by the time your first toon hit 80 and had them in full exotics, but I’m definitely not that good and I really don’t get how so many of you guys managed that. So, for now I’m just playing just for the sake of playing as “finishing” or completing a toon or even having a good toon seems an unreachable and futile goal.

Your “Catch 22” is completely self-imposed. If people couldn’t run dungeons without the best gear, then no one would have been able to run dungeons in the first place. Exotics are NOT required to run dungeons, or Fractals, or to play well in any other aspect of this game.

Think of it this way. You need a car to get to work. A Camaro and a Corvette will both suffice. Sure, the Corvette might look better and it might get you there a bit faster than the Camaro. But the Camaro will get you there just the same. If you want the Corvette, you have to be prepared to invest a bit more to get it. If this investment is too much, then learn to be happy with the Camaro. And bear in mind that a good driver in a Camaro is worth more than a bad driver in a Corvette.

PS – 21 hours, TC. Better get busy looking for that link.

What do you guys think?

I think some of you guys would enjoy video games far more if you’d stop worrying about chasing carrots.

Games are about “chasing carrots” – games have goals.

Funny, I don’t remember any carrots in Battlefield 1942. And yet I was able to enjoy that game a great many hours.

Does anyone yet whether or not these work on all nodes?

Seems to me that infusable rings and amulets are the best use of Laurels, until all your chars have a full set, why waste Laurels on harvesting tools?

It depends entirely on where your priorities lie. Some people simply do not care about BiS stats.

February monthly

Now, let me give a different point of view. The Monthly Achievement for WvW takes less than 2 hours (conservative estimate) — there have been times when I finished it in 30 minutes.

When you consider the time investment compared to completing 5 dungeon runs, this is a much bigger imbalance. In my experience, the number of people who participate in WvW versus Dungeon runs makes this achievement a chore.

It’s 1.25 dungeon completions per week over the course of a month. I hardly think that’s unreasonable. And this is coming from someone who has played since launch without setting one foot in a dungeon.

Every other monthly has something you do along the way while playing… Now if I want to get this done I have to buy 500 whites and spend 30 minutes salvaging them. So much fun!

Or — and bear with me on this, it might sound insane — you just play the game, and all the whites and salvagable items you pickup, you salvage all of those. It’s almost like it’ll be “something you do along the way while playing”…

I know, crazy, right?

I’m going to play Devil’s advocate, here. If someone only manages to play an hour or so a day then they might not get that many white and salvagable drops to begin with. And if they don’t play very much, they might already be relying on vendoring/TP’ing those drops to cover the cost of their Way Point fees, armor repair, and equipment upgrades.

I like salvaging items as a monthly goal, but I can see where others might not.
