This "Meta" has to end

So “this meta has to end”….

…so another one can takes its place? Then people can complain about the new one?

“Meta” is just an optimized build. No matter what changes they make to the build system, there will always be an optimal build for a specific type of content.

The problem isn’t the meta, it’s that people really need to stop joining PUGs with different playstyles. Make your own LFG or find a casual guild.

Only thing I see about the meta that has to end is how universal it is. Every path will have a meta. That’s unavoidable. Having every path have the same meta, on the other hand…

That’s a valid concern. I’d point out that WvW and PvP don’t rely on zerk so much, but that still leaves zerk as being optimal for pretty much all of PvE.

Is the problem really the build system, though? All the zerk meta means is: once you’ve figured out the content, you can do it with pure DPS gear. You don’t need passive defense, because active defenses are sufficient (and IMO, waaaaay more fun!). Once you’ve learned to dodge, interrupt, block, blind, etc the important attacks in every encounter, there’s just no reason to bring gear that increases your survivability.

Which leads us to the root of the problem: Boredom. Back when we were figuring out the dungeons for about the first year after launch, zerk was a popular choice. But, so was knights/soldiers, etc. Altruistic Healing guardians were in style. There was room for tankier builds, because, well….we hadn’t memorized the encounters.

Now new players come along that don’t have the encounters memorized, and they have problems in pure DPS gear. Those people need to find a good guild or dungeon group that is willing to teach them and let them learn.

tl;dr Zerk domination isn’t a build variety problem, it’s a boredom problem.

I’ve said it a number of times: I used to buy at least a typical MMO subscription worth of gems regularly when I started playing this game. Then I got infractions for daring to ask reasonable questions politely, watched ArenaNet ignore major issues with their game, and focus more or less entirely on LS and cash shop. I haven’t bought them in over a year.

And it’s entirely a trust issue. I don’t trust the company’s ability or willingness to produce content that I want to play at this point, at least not in any satisfying quantity. The refusal to even hint at what’s coming down the road damages this trust even further.

I love this game, and I’d love to support it again, but it’s not going to happen when all we get are LS episodes, openworld PvE farming “achievements”, cash shop, and silence.

While the policy is an issue, unless i’m misunderstanding the purpose, this is to get clear, consolidated player feedback to the devs. More than something to change or improve Arenas communication with players, outside of that policy. I think it’s pretty clear this is a data gathering (with the added possibility to report back to players) type position. A sub extension of what Gaile currently does practically alone.

So, if folks are looking at this as a policy changing initiative, they might just be looking at it wrongly?

And to that end, I think it’s a fine idea. Will it work out? I don’t know, but it seems worth a try.

Gaile has mentioned that the idea is that this program will help developers find threads that need addressing. If it works, it sounds worthwhile.

See what I did there? It seems worth a try, and sounds worthwhile.

Because once you remember that any response we get to the threads flagged by FS will still say, at best, “When it’s ready!™” or “Nothing is off the table!™”, I don’t see this as a real improvement in communication.

I hope you’re pushing hard for that policy change, Gaile. This headache isn’t going to go away by any other means.

Just a quick note to anyone looking to join [ARES]

We have a guild recruitment post here:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/community/lookingfor/ARES-Knights-of-Ares-Dragonbrand-PvX

The best way to get an invite is to request one on the site linked to at the bottom of the first post (It’s pretty painless, just need to make an enjin account). That site gets checked far more frequently than these forums, so it’ll just be faster :-)

I’ll see if we can get some invites out to jayt and Alacrity soon (if they aren’t already sent). I’d do it myself tonight, buuuuuut….. sssssssh whispers: I’m playing DA:I

Since this sub-forum was on the approved list I was provided (this project had its inception before I became Forum Communications Team Lead), I believe that the question of where we place the sub-forum is not a major issue. On the other hand, some of the other questions or comments in this thread involve forums that were not on the list, and therefore I’d need to get review and approval for changes.

Two questions:

(1) Does this mean that you’re seeking approval to keep the dungeon/BLTC forums alive?

(2) Are you bound by the same restriction as the Forum Specialists, that you aren’t allowed to mention that a request/suggestion has been escalated beyond Customer Support?

I really hope that initial layout was a proposition, and not a cast-in-stone final answer. BLTC and Dungeons really should be left separate (and I’m sure some other feel similarly about some other subforums). As people mention, General Discussion moves way too fast to get real answers on more specialized topics.

Why get rid of them and add specialists to reduce the amount of data coming in? Shouldn’t the specialists be able to help keep an eye on the more specialized subfora and subfawna?

dlonie too, he had that huge thread with Gail.

I couldn’t:

must have a Guild Wars 2 forum account in good standing with a history that includes minimal, if any, warnings or infractions

I’ve racked up quite a bit of PvF XP over the years, starting with the time I politely asked if Alphard’s bug was indeed a bug or intended. That first infraction was the beginning of the end for me.

Besides, would I want to be stuck in a role where I’m part of the problem, unable to give information to people who, by any measure of common sense, should be getting it? To be the middle-man between the mobs and the…other…middle-men (Gaile mentioned the FS would report to the FCT)?

No thanks. The Forum Communication “team” (I’m pretty sure the team is just Gaile, I’ve never seen anyone else post in that capacity) gets paid to do what they’re asking. I’m not doing their jobs for free, and certainly not with the restrictions they have in place.

And BTW — thanks for actively looking for solutions to the communications issues. I know a lot of the response has been negative so far, but I (and I’m sure many others) genuinely appreciate the effort you’re putting in.

I’ve repeatedly made it clear that, IMO, the solution to the issues will require a policy change on ArenaNet’s side, so I won’t start beating that dead horse. But I think it’s great that you’re looking for new things to try, and most importantly, running them past the community before implementing them. That’s the sort of approach we’d like to see applied to changes in other areas of the game, not just PvF!

Kudos high-fives

This part really bothers me. They wouldn’t even be able to say “I’ve let the devs know” or “I’ll put this in my report”?

Can you expand on the reasoning for this a bit, Gaile?

Merging tech support (PC and Mac) is going to create a mess. A lot of the problems that show up have generic fixes across Windows and although the same concept works for Mac, the process is different. Most people don’t identify their OS at the start. Windows will still be assumed but by merging them, even the most simple of fixes will begin with “PC or Mac?”

Then I go back to the suggestion just above: Start the thread with “MAC: [subject line]” or “PC: [subject line]” and our technical support people can answer appropriately.

I agree with you, not specifying OS is going to be an issue, so doing so in the subject line seems a quick and easy solution.

If you think posters will read stickies and follow rules on their own, then sure ;-)

I really don’t think this was meant to solve that at all. Something like this has been suggested in the past and it’s nice to see them gathering volunteers to funnel the massive amount of feedback to the people that need to read it.

I do appreciate that, and it’s a good start.

To put it another way: will any information flow back, or is this just another one-way route for information to go into ArenaNet?

For instance, the instance ownership system was revamped recently, and it really just added more opportunities for griefing. If something like this was to happen again, would the Forum Specialist have an opportunity to open up the proposed changes for discussion?

Forum Specialists may make no promises—expressed or implied—about the relaying of information, neither that it will be relayed nor that it has been relayed in the past. Forum Specialists may not divulge information that they may learn about unreleased components of the game, such as upcoming changes or new content.

I appreciate the idea, but what we need is a policy change. Not more people saying “I don’t know” or “I can’t tell you.”

What would the role of these specialists be? Just to point newcomers to existing posts that answer their questions? To serve as a liason between the player and developer communities? To be a friendly face associated with a particular subforum?

If they’re still bound by the “don’t talk about what’s in development” policy, I don’t see this improving anything.

Rather than give specifics on features, it might be nice to have a Manifesto 2.0. In the runup to the original release, I always enjoyed reading about the team’s thoughts on design. A lot of the original manifesto might still apply, but there have been plenty of changes as well.

lol, this was originally in my OP, but I had to take out the word “manifesto” because people are incredibly bitter about that word. They saw it and….well…just look at the first few posts before I edited the topic/OP

But yeah, that’s basically what I wanted to see. “Here’s what’s important to us and where we see the game going.” I really don’t see how that’s too much to ask for.

To everyone who wants to debate about what “investing” means…

I made you a new thread here. Please use it and try to stay on topic in this thread (which is the effect of ArenaNet’s silence policy on the community). Semantic debates should go into new threads.

Thanks.

Firstly, that debate ended yesterday, so you’re late.

Yep, RL has been eating into my forum’n time shakes fist at sky

Secondly, it was related to the topic, in that it was about people not investing their time and money into a game which gives no returns in the way of new things to do and how the silence regarding new things to do doesn’t make people want to continue to invest their time and money in it.

Some of it was, but there was a good chunk of it that was nothing but arguing semantics and colloquial vs. pedantic definitions.

shrugs The mods decided a new topic was unnecessary, for some reason (love when they close with no explanation), so keeping it here is fine, I guess.

Oh well…back to DA:I. Somebody ping me when ArenaNet gets its kitten together.

Time to ask the obvious: Have you tried making your own LFG post?

Players asking to ping gear: they want to run with other meta/minmaxers. Believe me, you probably don’t want to run with them anyway.

Players asking for gold at the final boss: They just solo’d a dungeon path and are opening the slots up for other players who want tokens/levels (for a small compensation for their efforts). Seems fair to me.

Just ignore the LFG posts that don’t match what your looking for, and make your own post if nothing available suits you.

So the original post was about a possible roadmap or simply more transparent communication. The poster specifically mentioned dungeons and made it crystal clear, that this was his personal view.
Fast forward 14 pages and people are having the ages old “what is meaningful content?” discussion. Why?
This was never about meaningful content, or any form of content, it’s about informing players of the direction of the game. If someone would tell me that GW2 will focus on casual players in the future, while only maintaining Fractals and Dungeons in case new updates break existing content, I would quit. I am in the same situation as the poster was a year ago. I am hoping for more hardcore content and I would be severely disappointed if, a year from now, I would find out that this form of content wasn’t even planned any longer. It’s a year I could have spent catching up in another MMO.

You got it. The point was that the combination of remaining silent about the future and putting out content that is not competitive with other games leads to a giant trust gap between the players and the company. It’s about watching my friends leave the game because there’s nothing left that they want to do, nothing on the horizon, and that they’ve been waiting for more than a year to see new content in the area of the game that they play.

This thread wasn’t really even to discuss the types of content we’d like to see, or whether or not what’s there is enough. It was to say “Whatcha doing?” We’d just like to know which areas of the game will see updates in the next year, and which ones won’t, because it’s clear that ArenaNet can’t focus on all of them at once.

I’ve more or less stopped following the thread, it’s too much work to keep the “I DON’T AGREE WITH YOU SO YOU’RE A STUPIDHEAD” posts out (Looking at you, Obtena). We had a nice discussion for about 10 pages, and once Gaile said she understood our concerns and would raise them internally….well, that’s all I could ask for. It’s sad to see the quality of the thread going down hill with bickering and name-calling, but oh well. It’s lived its life.

Oh my GOD. Genius. This is absolutely PERFECT!
Hey, why don’t we exercise hyperbole in response to everything? I mean, it’s not like removing reflects from one particular boss fight completely removes them from the game. We could always save dev’ time and give the boss a complete overhaul!

But seriously, the GL fight would be a lot more dynamic if you didn’t burst through entire phases with reflects. Spin it however you want, but I don’t think nerfing reflects across the entire game is the way to go. Just change one encounter and voillah.

I’m pretty sure deSade thought you were being sarcastic when you said that, hence the also jokingly sarcastic reaction Suggesting that they remove reflects from Lupi has been a running gag since this technique became public.

Doing so would be awful, because when ArenaNet makes projectiles unreflectable, they also make them unblockable, meaning things like warrior offhand sword, guardian focus shield, etc won’t work, either — just like Malrona.

Though now I’m curious whether every class would have enough evades to get through Lupi without using block skills. Anyone want to make a video series?
