Ascended gear price increase - grind on?

Unless you plan on raiding or doing really high level fractals, I don’t believe ascended gear is required at all. I mean you can do the open world and PvP stuff in blue armor and still be fine.

I’m kind of confused where these “hard” metas stand now. We have raids now, they are hard, they are for hardcore people.
Wouldn’t it make sense to ease up these hard metas? Especially ones that are based more on DPS checks (the TD one)?

I would get rid of RNG for everything.

I would rather grind out 1000 tickets of something knowing that I WILL get what I want rather than wasting my time essentially gambling with the possibility that my effort will go wasted and I never get what I want.

It’s a common design flaw in many MMOs because developers view RNG as a way to pad out gameplay, even if it’s at the cost of player enjoyment.

Even though this game isn’t very gear dependent, there is still a lot of annoying RNG stuff in the game.

There’s the ley line armour that you can get in DS, however since that set is ENTIRELY government by luck from the all lazy RNG, it can be impossible for some to get the whole set.

Nothing like spending 1-2 hours of the meta to try and get a chance as a piece of ley stone armor then get nothing from rewards or noxious pods.

Other than some weapon sets, yeah it’s pretty disappointing there’s no many armor sets to get and the ones that do exist are stuck behind massive massive grinds or just bad design (RNG is bad design no matter what).

I support changing them, not because I don’t like a challenge, but because the difficulty for adventures are all over the place.

Some are FAR too easy to get gold, and some are incredibly hard just to get silve. It’s very inconsistent and poor design.

This game isn't as grindy as other MMOs

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

hardy.7469

In terms of leveling 1-80. No it’s not that grindy.

However if you want to view mastries as level (which they are), then it’s pretty grindy.
Casually playing will get you nowhere in masteries. It’ll get you the necessities like poison lore, updraft etc, but getting the later levels in mastries is pretty bad.

But you know what? I don’t mind. It’s fine. Grinds for MMOs have to exist in some form.
What I DON’T like however is RNG grinding. Grinding that is solely dependent on pure luck, which HoT has far more of than the base game.

Sure, most of the RNG stuff is more “vanity” like the Leystone armour, but it doesn’t take away that RNG is one of the worst concepts for players in video games. RNG is only there to benefit the developer at the cost of player enjoyment.

Nothing like spending 60-90 minutes in places like Dragon Stand in hopes of getting a piece of leystone armor, only to get nothing, then desperately trying to get noxious pods to get it and still get nothing. Meanwhile some other person gets 3 pieces because… Luck.

I reverted back to my casual play.

I haven’t even come close to maxing masteries or anything, but I’ve never been a fan of level grinding… And masteries are level grinding, very very grindy level grind.

I do metas from time to time. Usually Dragon Stand, but even that I’ve grown tired of because all I want is the leystone armour, but it comes down to entirely RNG, which is something I hate every developer doing, it ends up being a complete waste of my time. It’s the laziest cheapest way to stretch “content” and turns me right off, so I"ll probably just log in once and a while to kill a few things and log off.

Some people love the grind though obviously, and good on them.

Pocket raptors, those dog things that teleport a bunch of times and those little rolling creatures. All do an insane amount of damage over a short time that it downs most people.

Some people love it, but it’s really just bad design. It’s not a challenge, but there to make a cheap death to waste a players time. Mainly being an issue if you’re just trying to get from point A to B.

I don’t mind challenge, I mind cheapness.

Dragon Stand, the event before the boss, is a massive example of what not to do. Takes long with most PUG groups, involves running around in circles, and offers no experience or loot from the mobs themselves. I like the zone, but that event is plain silly.

That and all these metas turn into a giant waste of time if the server boots you or the game client crashes.

There is definitely no point.
I’ve must have wasted 10+ hours on literally nothing because of all the crashes and wiping all my participation. I can’t imagine how many hours were wasted for other people who have played way more than me, and the sad thing is, ANet will probably do nothing to say sorry or compensate for the literal time wasted because of their shoddy servers and programming.

I mean what’s the point of doing a meta knowing that there’s a high chance the 1-2+ hours you spend doing it is a complete waste of time?

Game crashed at the end of the Dragons Stand meta-event, wasn’t able to rejoin after logging back in, got nothing. Please fix the crashes.

I was probably in the same map as you. About 10% health left, game crashed and couldn’t get in.

That would’ve been my first time beating him. That was the experience Arena Net gave me and I’m assuming many other people.

That’s the climactic battle for players for the expansion maps. A game crashing pathetically programmed game with an unstable client, bad programming and crap servers with whatever knob thinking it would be a GENIUS idea to tie participation to the map and not the player.

I was never more excited to finally beat that meta and because of that, it was the single worst MMO experience I have ever experienced, and I’m 10+ year MMO players.
I’d rather graphical glitches or even progressing blocking bugs than having a game so poorly programmed that you THINK it’s working until it randomly doesn’t, and at the worst possible time, because with those, I at least know I can walk away knowing my effort wasn’t wasted, but here, you can spend 2 or more hours working on a map only to have that effort completely wiped out of existence because, again, some idiot or idiots thought tying participation to the map and not the player was a good idea.

All I know is it has soured me permanently towards Arena Net and I hope it has others too because this sort of shoddy handling is inexcusable.

I think I’m going to quit for a while too. Arena Net isn’t wasting anymore of my time and don’t deserve any more of my money. Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.

And yes, I’m aware that there’s a 64bit client, from other players, not ANet, and it was released AFTER the launch of expansion. Apparently ANet WANTS you to be playing on an inferior client.
Maybe that was their attempt at making Modremoth more intimidating knowing that he can crash your game and have you waste hours of your life. I mean that’s the only rationale I can think of for the expansion being so poorly handled.

Kind of sad and pathetic that you do this AFTER the launch of an expansion and make people play the game with a clearly inferior and extremely unstable 32bit client.

Terrible terrible planning on your part.

Unless wasting hours of peoples times with your bad programming and servers was part of the “experience”.
Maybe the threat of Modremoth crashing the game or disconnecting you and making you lose all participation (whoever thought of the idea of linking participation to the map is an idiot, or a bunch of idiots period) was you trying to make him feel more threatening…

Better late then never I suppose, though at least this teaches me the lesson never to buy software from you company again until at least a month or more later when you clearly figure out what you’re even doing.

Not 100% sure for Dragon’s Stand, but the other three are really just Gliding (updraft rank 2), Itzel (Poison Lore rank 4), Exalted (Acceptance rank 2) and Nuhoch (Wallows rank 2).

Updraft and Poison Lore are the most important. Exalted is just to get I think 2 things on AB, and Nuhoch a couple in AB and TD.

I don’t know if you need the final rank of gliding for Dragon’s Stand because I’ve never been in a map that completes the meta to actually get to many of the map stuff.

It doesn’t help that if you are on a low pop map, and are asked to go to another, that transferring to the new map wipes all participation to 0 for your character. It gives zero incentive for people to even bother doing metas.

I mean who’s genius idea was it to have participation linked to the MAP and not the character.
Not many problems arise from that aside from the game forcing you to another map, crashes, disconnects, mega servers not working and more completely wiping all participation.

The megaservers are all sorts of terrible. If you d/c you’ll end up on a new map with all participation lost, if you crash same thing. If the map is dead you MAY get the option to go to another map but, yet again, all participation is lost.

It really kills the mood to even bother trying to do the metas from beginning to end with all the random chances to lose all your effort. It’s pathetic.

Why bother getting armor collections of achievements if there’s a good chance you will be wasting hours of your time because ANet can’t program servers properly.

This might sound confusing but the meta event and the final mission of the PS take place at the same time. While the Pact attacks the physical Mordremoth, the PC attacks him in his own mind. The physical attack works because Mordy’s mind is assaulted and the attack on his mind works because the Pact is knocking his teeth out. One would not have worked without the other. And before you give me the “but I did both”, yes you can, but storywise you only did the mind attack, the meta event assumes you are just a random pact soldier.

I don’t think so, is there any proof?

Pretty sure in that last instance, people were talking about how distracted Mord was, allowing us to go where we did.
Looking back it now, it would make sense that Mord was distracted by the Pact attack on his mouth. I suppose they were going for a Lord of the Rings type climax where the big bad is distracted with an army and lets the little group slip by.

The end wasn't the end. (SPOILERS)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: hardy.7469

I think the problem is that the PS doesn’t make you do zone meta events. If you consider the timeline for the story where you go into Dragon’s Stand through the personal story, do the meta, then continue to the story, it makes sense and makes Mord seem more formidable, but since ANet doesn’t want to force the storyline to make you do zone map stuff, it seems like we just swiftly ran in there and killed him.

And Mord is dead, he’s dead. His energy exploded in three directions and something absorbed some of it.

The big question that hangs, ever since Zhaitan is whether or not the dragons can be replaced. Can something absorb their power and take their place.

I wouldn’t mind the crashes and disconnects so much if you didn’t, even if you log back in within seconds, get booted to another megaserver and all participation for the metas/events is completely removed and erased, as if ArenaNet thinks it’s acceptable to waste peoples times because they are too lazy/cheap to program in checks to keep people on servers they are on during these issues.
I mean that’s server 101 guys, you don’t screw over consumers like that because of your end, you put in protections, like I dunno at least a MINUTE where the game saves the server and participation for a player if they suddenly go off line.

You know what’s just as bad as that? Having the game crash RIGHT after completing a meta (like Tarir) and you logging back in, but being shot to another mega server, losing the actual rewards you are able to get (the chests down below Tarir) for your hard work.

It completely deflates and ambition to even bother with these events if you can’t even maintain participation or even collect rewards because of server/game issues.

Also it might not have been so bad if you could say max it out in one zone, but because of many of the hp being locked behind masteries and metas, you have to do probably around the first three zones before you had enough points, depending how many you had from the “old world” left over.

I think it’s better now. The grind should be the mastery system, the new stat gear/crafting, raiding and other things. Not weapons.

In terms of a number figure… I suppose… 7-8/10.. Now? A solid 8/10 maybe? lol

What I’m curious about with Novus is if that giant cubical structure seen to the side of the map (not sure if we can access it) is the Uncategorized Fractal – or what it’s based off of. Both had cataclysmic events and Novus is a “lost city” that was built around the time Rata Sum’s giant cube would have been (Uncategorized fractal was said by a dev to be made by folks with similar design as Rata Sum).

An interesting thing in Tangled Depths is that if you go Southeast of the map to a POI called “Vine Wall”, you’ll see very large Modrem creatures walking along the cliffside around and to the North directly to that giant cube. Or if not there, to the area in between Tangled Depths and Metrica Province.
Kind of a weird thing to add given how the story never goes there. Maybe it’s part of a meta, I don’t know, all I know is there’s a lot of Modrem headed in that area.

After realizing the total at the end of the new weapon training is how many points you need total, not the points needed for just the one skill (a tooltip would’ve helped clear that up)

It’s not THAT bad.
You could fully master the new elite skill if you get them all in the first zone and a bit in the second (I don’t know how much you need total from start to finish), so there are more hero points in the zones than needed at the moment.
Though I suppose being able to do it all in one zone would be nice.

Also them putting in more hp than what is required for the elite specialization leads me to believe they will have another hp dump somewhere.

It just doesn’t seem worth the grind.

It’s not required, it’s not like an ultima weapon that blows all the other weapon sets out of the water, it required learning new moves and skills, and they want us to grind a ton of hp to unlock it?

I mean part of me things, 4-6 months down the road, they will nerf how much you need hard, but right now, even on one toon let alone any amount of alts, it’s too much for many.

Maybe that’s why they call it an “elite” specialization. Only the most dedicated can get it, even if it’s not really worth it. lol

It is a weird design decision to make the new weapon skill so hard to fully unlock.
It just cuts people off from trying it. Sure some more dedicated players will do it, but some people will see the grind and say “meh”, and stick with the still valid weapons they easily unlocked already, with many not bothering at all with alts.

I mean the new weapons are not superior in any way shape or form and is just another play style, so making such a big grind gating that extra play style just seems like an odd decision to me.
To my understanding, I thought the mastery system was suppose to be the new “levels” to grind, not the hero points for a weapons kill that is completely optional.

It comes off as one of those decisions that were made for the developers benefit and not the players. Something to pad out the grind, even if it’s to the detriment of the user experience, a pitfall that many MAAAANY MMO developers fall back on far too many times.
