fishing for compliments! haha jk
those stats are pretty juicy except for your crit chance. I would calculate your dps with fury, without fury, then switch out some cavalier for knights calculate dps with and without fury then decide how high your fury up time will be and then decide.
The only changes I’d like to see are: reduced pre-cast on sword #2, and make the AA chain interruptible
I would love more skill-shots. The lack of skill shots is why they can’t make ranged on par with melee.
-a ranger
Whats the “best” free server to transfer to for solo/small group roaming? Currently in t8 where 90% of my time is spent finding someone to fight… I was thinking crystal desert because i know ppl are streaming to HOD so should be plenty of fights right?!
hahaha rangers will never be good at zerging, and frankly who cares? btw i looked at some of your older posts, all you’re doing is spreading hate, please switch classes already.
Invigorating bond looks very interesting, can’t wait to try it with a traited fern hound
waiiiiiiiit, survival skills are gonna clear condis and grant fury?! but my power build already runs three survival skills! omg i could hug you!
I think your build looks good btw. I’ve been roaming longbow s/d for a while and I gotta say you really don’t need increased arrow speed… The people saying you do are probably zerglings who stay at 1500 range all day. you could take those 10 points and put them elsewhere. protection on dodge roll is great: especially vs thiefs. prec and crit is always nice as well. or you could put them into beastmastery and get reduced cooldowns, or with that boon duration, might on pet swap, oh the possibilities
very nice everyone! thx for posting
might be hearsay but aren’t they nerfing the crit damage on celestials? I like knights myself.
Hello all!
I’m thinking about recoloring my pitch black sylvari into something interesting like blue or red and was looking for some inspiration.
Please post pics, preferably in medium cultural armor!
Unfortunately, projectile finishers only affect the shooter if you’re right next to your target, like within melee range. Thx for the GS info, had no idea about that. don’t think its a glitch/bug cuz there’s two distinct animations.
I agree that warrior mobility is too high but requiring movement skills to have a target would destroy whats left of solo/small group roaming.
new skirmishing adept trait: movement speed is increased by 25% while using ranged weapons.
using signet of the hunt, which gives a 25% movement speed buff, hurts rangers more than ANY other class using their equivalent signets because the active doesn’t affect the ranger unless a grandmaster trait is taken.
I think the issue is that when comparing condis to power buids, everyone seems to compare zerkers to rabid for some reason where as they should be comparing berserker to rampager, rabid to knights, and clerics to apothecary. Of course a zerker is going to do more dps then a rabid or apothecay but he’s gonna have zero sustain. The real question is do apothecary and rabid builds do too much damage for their sustain?
I don’t like the idea of counter classes in any setting, be it pvp or wvw. It already feels like condi necros are my counter class and it’s not fun. Try this with thieves:
20/20/30/0/0 sword/dagger longbow utils: lightning reflexes and 2 of your choice.
longbow 2 right before stealth. When a backstab is coming switch to s/d spam dodges and evades and right before he un-stealths sword 2, about face, and jump again. He’ll appear and you’ll be far away from him, switch back to longbow and repeat. If he decides to ignore backstabs and just bum rush you, you have protection on dodge which will mitigate a lot of his auto attack damage.
I haven’t tried it yet but I really wanna experiment with fern hounds for added sustain. If traited, you can get a 4k heal every 25 seconds with two traits, or 20 seconds with three traits.
I’ve solo roamed with my ranger for a long time but only started pvping in the past month so I can’t give you expert advice or anything but imho
1. S/d is better in fair duels, but the spike damage from Moment of clarity GS is more suitable to your role as a dpser so I’d keep GS.
3. try jaguar/wolf for a while and see if you like it. I’ve seen top level rangers even use drakes because drakes have a suprising amount of burst with tail swipe, and their f2. (though it takes practice to land f2 consistently).
yep, you’re right on the money. I recently switched from GS to s/d and haven’t looked back. I actually posted something in the collaboration thing a couple days ago about letting you move while casting hilt bash among other suggestions but ya, its pretty rough, especially vs swiftness. One thing that really helps is muddy terrain, might be worth a try with GS. Cast muddy terrain, then move behind your foe and whack away.
because watching my s/d lightning reflex ranger fly across the screen makes other classes seem boring
drakevenom
anvil rock
all
My tests were done on a training dummy so vuln was taken into play. Also, I think maul can shave some time off of the aftercast of the 3rd attack in the chain. Test it yourself if you don’t believe me. But ya I was using martial master as well (I wasn’t using two handed training). Don’t get me wrong, I think Greatsword needs a buff like no other and why they gave the weapon with no evades, and no poison access, lower dps is beyond me.
Don’t be a afraid to use Greatsword as other people have stated. GS autoattack plus maul spam does like 9% less dps than sword autoattack. When you factor in your pet damage, the fact that you’re in a group, and the vuln from maul, the damage difference is minimal. Now in a PvP situation, it’s a different story.
+1 on the stowing pet gives boons idea. I think the act of stowing and unstowing your pets during combat would add some nice depth to the class, especially to people who have played the class for a long time. A followup idea of mine is when your pet is stowed, your f2 skills turns into a unique pet themed attack that YOU perform, not your pet. This attack would be on a different cooldown then your pet’s f2, so there would be some depth in when to switch pets, when to stow your pet and so forth.

Proposal Overview:
Greatsword skill changes
Goal of Proposal
GS is currently inferior in every way to sword/dagger. GS autoattack + perfectly timed mauls does less DPS than sword autoattack. (sword aa also gives your pet might and crippples your target). GS gets a 1 directional movement skill (swoop). Sword gets a 1 or 2 directional movement skill on a shorter cd with an evade. GS does less dps, and also has no access to poison which further limits the pressure the GS can unload. Sword/dagger gets two good sources of poison. GS 4, the blocking skill has a slow animation that in many cases can send you to the grave. (vs mesmers, vs burning speed, vs necros, vs any fast attacks). Sword/dagger on the other hand gets three evades which are each superior to Greatswords single block. Hilt Bash: Because you can’t move while hilt bashing, people can avoid it just by running away from you.
Proposal Functionality
autoattack chain: substantially increase damage of the 3rd attack and remove the evade. (give rangers a reason to stick to their target).
maul: increase cd and damage slightly. doesn’t apply vuln, instead applies cripple.
swoop: evades for the duration. (swiftness boon as suggested in an earlier post)
counterattack: now funtions like warrior shield stance, the ranger can end the skill by throwing his sword but now the sword inflicts poison.
hilt bash: can move while casting.
Associated Risks
can’t think of any but let me know.

I don’t know much about pve (hopely someone can clarify) but I’m pretty sure as long as you’re using onehanded sword+spotter’s trait+feline pets, you won’t get any complaints in dungeon runs. As for WvW, ranger is a strong 1v1 class and imho pretty mediocre everywhere else. Some matchups are very challenging for a ranger due to our odd condition removal (look at empathic bond). I also have trouble with dps guardians but that just might be me personally. I tend to beat about 95% of the warriors I meet and the majority of thiefs I run into but as soon as someone else jumps in, you’re probably gonna have a bad time because ranger lacks aoe control.
Hello, I was wondering if someone could explain to me the order of cleansing if say you have multiple conditions and you clean just one or two. Is it first in first out? Is there a priority, like some condis will always be cleansed first?
sorry didn’t mean to sound like a troll! It’s just putting so much CC on auto attacks seems a bit much. I definately agree that GS needs work as it’s autoattack is literally one of worst melee autoattacks in the game. I’d like to see sword auto attack chain interuptable so that you can cast sword 2 or 3, or dagger 4 without any delay whatsoever. I like your idea for shortbow 5, could make for some very intersting combos. Axe 5 would be very welcome haha
ya ok spam your skills vs a good thief and tell me how those thief “slow” cast times work out for you. I never said my ideas were revolutionary, just pointing out that there’s a time and place for each skill and that skills aren’t spammy. Instead of refuting this, you bashed my ideas. Oh and deslecting your target before fearing doesn’t “amplify” the effect, it just makes your wolf start the animation instantly, but thanks for proving my point.
lol ya wish the active didn’t have to do with getting downed…
NPC skins please! I want my spider to look like queen jennah
Thx for posting this man! a lot of people overestimate bird dps…
OP I find it hard to take you seriously when you use statements like “spam to win” and “useless pets”. Do you even play ranger? Their a lot of tricks you learn after a while like deselecting your target before casting fear or cc’ing your opponent before activating a pet skill to ensure it hits. And If you’ve ever fought a good thief or mesmer you’ll learn how unspammy the longbow is. You can’t miss any HSs or PBS or you’re dead…
I like to cast PBS right after my wolf’s fear to chain cc them. HS is very useful to ensure an un-interupted heal and to activate my elite skill. A lot of rangers I see do spam their skills and thats why they’re usually a corpse on the ground 5 seconds later.
cute?!! that picture gave me dark memories of chuckie… oh god the horror
I agree with you man, but I’d rather have more trait-based cleansing options instad of tying it to utility/healing skills.
something like:
natures wrath: clean a condion when you gain fury
if stationary target:
god tier: cats
tier 1: (empty)
tier 2: birds, drakes
tier 3: everything else
else:
tier 1: jungle and cave spider, wolf, drakehound, raven, boar
haha for real, these posts are hilarious. Rangers can bunker insanely well. Perma regen, good protection uptime, multiple evades, and to top it off, a pet that won’t scale with your defensive stats. If you really want the cons of ranger roaming, its the lack of active condi removal. EP is nice but is not strong enough to be a lvl 30 trait. Sig of renewal just has an insane cd and also kills your pet. healing spring is cool but the healing itself is inferior to troll unguent. That and your pet skills occasionally bugging out are the major cons.
..is that no one ever runs away from you! Anyone else notice this? I was roaming on my thief and it seems like half the people I run into don’t wanna fight and just run away but on my ranger, everyones game!
What kind of build are you running? If you have high regeneration uptime (shout heal) and signet of the wild, apothecary all the way for insane sustain. I don’t know about the spirit, but if your only form of healing is troll ugent, dire is probably better because it doesn’t scale that great from healing. As for sig of renewal vs protect me it probably depends on who you are fighting. The signet is great if a necro spite bombs you.
lol nerf ranger melee? right now GS’s auto attack hits as hard as a warriors one-handed sword… except without the bleed…. and its almost twice as slow.
aw man i’ve alway’s wanted to try traps in a power build, keep us posted!
Hello everyone, if they decide to add more active condi removal options for ranger, in what form would you like it? here’s a list I thought would fit the ranger’s playstyle. Feel free to add to it.
on pet skill?
on pet swap?
on survival skill usage?
on interrupting a foe?
on spirit skill activiation?
on gaining fury?
on warhorn skills?
on signet usage?
activated traps clear condis in their radius?
If you’re really interested in min/maxing I’d recommend doing the math yourself to get a better picture. google gw2 build editor and gw2 damage formula. deep strikes adds a very small amount of crit chance so just spam justice and rage.
I agree with your point Fluffball but this idea would seperate the ranger from the warrior because of two things:
1. If you don’t stow your pet, the ranger plays same as before.
2. If you stow your pet. You basically become a “utility” fighter, Each pet has unique skills so with two pets, you have access to a huge variety of skills to utilize on your f bar. (ok is starting to sound like an engineer haha but in a good way right?)
And demon, I’m not talking about large increases to skills multiplies or large increases to attributes, just subtle changes to bring levels to other classes.
Well if you use that logic, any skills from any class can be called anything. Fear isn’t universal to the warrior, neither is toughness or crit damage.
Hitler was defined by his cruelty, does that make it okay?
A warrior? I’m confused…
Your f skills would be replaced by attacks derived from the pet and the effect would be carried out by yourself instead of your pet. This would allow amazing synergy for many builds. for example: traits like moment of clarity. you could use wolf pets and have more access to interupts…
