As soon as Anet announced a swiss format and 6 servers in a series of 6 server setups and that there would be individual rewards tied to server position it was obvious what the outcome would be. Some servers got an influx of transfers even somehow when they were full and we are where we are. Blame Anet for the shambles we are in.
As Shiren says, giving player rewards tied to server position was so flawed. All the fairweather and achievement hunters types just flocked to the obvious choices and numbers and coverage trumps all in wvw. Personally I could not give two hoots for a stupid skin if it means wvw is broken like this.
We were having some great T1 NA match ups leading up to season 2, some really close fights but its all gone pearshaped.

As far as I can see its just your “newer” recruits who seem to be creating these endless threads.
i am loving the fights (not the capping because 15 ACs is just … lols). The open field or semi open field are great.
The rewards should just be based on finishing the meta. Aka finish the meta, get 1 skin of your choice and the 15 greens.
Honestly for the server placement (along with season 1) should have had PERMANENT finishers. Season 1 would have been the Dolyak. Season 2 maybe an Ettin. Just continue with animals or something like that. A exclusive finisher to the 1-3 places.
But Anet screwed that up as well. The finisher alone would have been reward enough (well until the llama, because thats just the best content ever).
What makes for a good WvW server? Is it because of numbers? A good community? Skilled players? Tons of guilds on a server? What makes a server a good WvW competitor?

depends on the server and guilds on it. Some are a just coverage. Some are coverage and numbers. Some are both and skill. Some are all 3 and suspicious behavior. Some are bought servers which after a few months die horribly like SoR.

@Sol: Competition yes..i am definitely up for that and agree with u…. Seeing someone (SoS) trying their absolute best to loose on purpose to come over someone who invests in that competition…definitely not. That’s something wrong in my view…..very wrong. That’s not the kind of competition ppl want to be part off. This effects more ppl in a negative way then it does in a positive way.
It’s the exact same thing as saying “hey u can learn however much u want in life….a slacker will still beat u at the end”. That’s not a good image to promote specially from a competitive point of view.
Let’s use sports competition as an analogy.
If we are in a 100m race, it’s bam and everyone bursts at max speed and it’s over in 10 seconds. If we are in a marathon race, pacing and strategy becomes important. You do not run a marathon by using max speed from the start and expect to last all the way to the finishing line. There are also teams whereby the main runner runs behind in the wake of his team mate to conserve energy before finally going max speed in the last few kilometres.
The 9 week tournament is more like a marathon race. Your view is that SoS will purposely lose which is against the spirit of competition but I view it as pacing. They still fight to the best of their abilities but conserve their strengths and not go for PPT.
If you watch soccer or football, you will see that there are important matches and less important matches. Each team does not go bam from start of league season at max effort all the way to end. They conserve strength, rest their key players during less important matches to reduce injuries and red cards. The football manager also has strategy and the half-time talks in the locker room is not just : ok fellows, fight all the way to get max points. There are matches whereby teams play super defensive to gain advantage for next match.
When you see WvW evolve in this matter to reflect real life sports competitions, it is a good thing. If it is a bad thing, why are these sports competition worth billions of dollars with millions of fans watching them ?
Teams still try to win every game regardless. Football never rests people outside of playoff seeding already set. Soccer is different but thats if they are playing multiple seasons (ex: BPL and EUFA which happen at the same time). Super Rugby is pretty much like football except some guys need more rest or have a tweak in their calf and the guy behind him is almost as good.
Not showing up is unacceptable imo. But there is nothing Anet can do to stop that overall which is why you need to have a season somewhat like season 1 with a playoff (if you want a season format). It makes every match mean something then the best move on.
This Swiss Hilarity is just horrible. I think it was Anet’s way of removing top servers from the top artificially (at least in the case of T1 NA). But the format alone reduces the competition to a kangaroo competition regardless if SoS was or wasn’t throwing T1 matches on purpose.
They could have also polled the community because i am sure if it was polled this format would have been overwhelmingly shot down.

Personally i think, if there was the same system which was in S1, with the current T1 balance..matches would have been much more fun and closer. ATLEAST much better then what it’s now….S1 wasn’t perfect…but from my opinion it was better then S2…and if that’s the case…that means ANet instead of improving they are regressing. That’s bad.
They wouldn’t be close in T1. Other than the 2-3 times JQ and TC would face BG together, BG would crush them (as i suspect TC would crush JQ) separate. So yes the overall point system points would be close but the matches overall would not be.
Actually i was..on DB, SOS then BG….moved back when transfers were free. Most of my moves were because most of the ppl were doing pve more then wvw….or in SOS’s case, at the time, the community was not that great. Don’t know how it’s now. So yes i know how much coverage does to a server…but honestly at T1 the coverage is pretty well balanced…a server is know for good SEA while the other is known for good NA and so on.
Personally i see atleast T1 being very balanced when it comes to population and the best example i could give u is to look at the last match JQ/BG/TC had just before the seasons started. There was like a 10k difference between them or even lower. U honestly can’t get closer then that even if u have the exact same number of ppl constantly on.
At lower leagues i am sure it’s not that different…but the major difference is the dedication and effort they put in wvw. They might put their majority of work in other areas of the game.
T1 isn’t balanced. Its closer than most others but its not. BG can cover most time zones minus 1. Even then, we have enough on to hold and do some pushing. Thats why they have to stop transfers. While its a loss of money and loss for some to get to a real server, it stacks the top servers which pretty much eliminate the others.
As of right now the gap between BG and TC is big, the tc and jq is huge and jq to others gigantic. (arbitrary differences used). Point is BG is the top server, Tc is #2 and JQ is #3 (NA).
I am actually quite impressed JQ and TC have held on with the double team this much. Kudos for not sniping and backstabbing each other. :P
Swiss style matchups are great for determining who is top tier, but they are horrible for determining rankings.
My server, Borliss Pass, lost (3rd place) early and has been grinding out #2 finishes all tournament, beating up on lowly SoR while everybody else blows us out. If we get only one victory against the worst competition, which we could get this week, we could finish tied for 4th place. This is an awful result, realistically we are the #7 server.
One problem is that the leagues are too small and finishing second is rewarded too highly. Finishing second after getting blown out by thousands of points shouldn’t be worth more than half of a first place finish.
If this is to be done in the future, I propose:
1. Swiss style tournament
2. Scoring system changed so second place =2 points
3. No leagues, everybody in the same system
4. Free transfer to bronze pre tournament, expensive, no transfer to gold
5. Top 6 get gold reward, next 9 get silver, next 9 get bronzeIf anet is insistent that only one server gets to win (IMHO, this is a bad idea, they need to cut back on incentizing players to over stack servers), then a one week playoff of the top 3 servers accomplishes this.
there should be a season then playoffs. The playoffs should be something special. such as TC vs BG on 2-3 private maps. The scores are combined. Or make a whole new couple maps so you can have a playoff where its literally winner is the best.
The only thing other than seasons should be reward tracks. This keeps the population up.
All this means is that Pure Swiss tournament format for WvWvW is not the perfect means to balance rankings, although it is better than before.
Maybe a blended format using Swiss and later on, server rating and points proximity to determine match-ups might make for interesting competition. With population imbalances as it is, there is no shroud over why we are caught in a loop of same match-ups across all the leagues. The swiss style would have been more appropriate if the servers were more closely matched, thus able to have the same match-ups with different results thus more difficulty in determining who comes out on top.
My biggest fear is that only Coverage in the past, now, and in the future will determine real victors. Of course, unless you pull off a 2v1 which actually decimates this outstanding problem outright. If servers were fearful of being double-teamed by bringing too many people to their side, there would be a much more even spread of coverage, thus defeating the biggest incentive to double-team since everyone has an equal chance to win.
it should be coverage. Its a 24/7 contest. Those with coverage should have the advantage.
That is a big reason the 2v1 is working (points wise) against BG. TC and JQ are playing overtime on most maps.
This won’t break BG since those that are fighting on BG now are the hardcore WvWers and long time BGers mostly. We win most open field fights and even with all the hilarious siege we have been flipping T3 WPs (without having to ninja them).
The problem has been the way they have done the season/tournament. Both were bad but at least season 1 didn’t encourage lose/win strats and didn’t allow for 2v1s of the scale of TC/JQ for more than half the season.
Also with the SoS strat and the 2v1, the best WvW server has no chance to even come in 3rd. I would say thats a good thing, except it has nothing to do with actual play.
They should have made it for more points gained through t1 match ups.
Its like giving horrible team a way to game the system to be considered one of the best.
But as many of us on BG have continued the fight, we see it as a big challenge and fun. We laugh and joke around.
One of the best moments (funny wise) was yesterday. At that bridge in between Hills, the camp and Garrison on bgbl, a group of like 50 JQ and 20 TC were up against about 30-35 BG. They had to build 8 ACs as they inched forward and NEVER pushed.
These types of moments are what keep most of us coming back. Those and the awesome fights and last second saves.
The problem is for many even some in the main WvW guilds are burnt out on the season and or discouraged. Anet really hasn’t thought either season through at all. It doesn’t take a year to figure out a good system. It doesn’t even have to be perfect. It just has to make sense and combat the problem of this season.

If Anet thought this through for more than 1 second, they would have saw this format is horrible.
I don’t mind seasons and all that. Tournament = WvW. This is just Season 1 (which was a debacle in itself but thats another discussion) with the strat to lose so you can win.
What should have been done:
1. T1-whatever Tier should have had different point values.
T1
1st – 10
2nd – 8
3rd – 5
T2
1st -8
2nd – 5
3rd – 3
Or something along those lines. That would eliminate SoS’s lose to win hilarity.
2. In essence making 1 server have to fight 2 servers who are on the same TS for over half the season is just bad design. It should be round robins or a schedule like Season 1. (not a complaint, TC and JQ have made me rich the past 3 match ups). I am sure TC or JQ would be angry if they had to deal with BG/TC or BG/JQ team ups respectively for 4+ weeks.
They need to change the overall design or have a separate competition.
Something along the lines of WvW tournament (spanning all 4 maps) but ONLY 2 Worlds. They have a seperate WvWvW that gives the WvW tournament worlds bonuses from caps of objectives or whatever.
Example: cap bay (depending on tier), supply delivers spawn faster. T1 Bay = 10% faster. T2= 20%, T3 = 50%.
But as of now, the system (for seasons at least) is completely broken.

What you are essentially are saying is, make it hilariously cheap to make the backpiece so i can have it. As of now, its hilariously cheap for an ascended piece. you can get away with spending 47 gold to make something thats equal to something that takes 270-400 gold.
That is not what I mean. If you do not already have a crafting skill to 500 to make the piece, you have to spend the 50-100g it takes to do that, on top of the 47 gold to make just the back piece. I know blade shards are easy to get I have the exotic version of the piece and I have 2.5 more stacks of the shards.
but that is not the point of this thread. all I am saying is that the colors should be available to all tiers of the piece, but the more you upgrade the piece, the more wings/effects you get.
Thats not what you said when you posted. But lets take that. The glow on the wings at ascended are minimal outside of the jetpack ish area.
The appearance on each combination changes. Why should you have the “best” or be rewarded with a similar appearance for much less work (which isn’t all that much more if you actually tried).
I will give you some tips on how to get money if you don’t have hours on end:
guild missions – every 10 commendations is about 13-16 gold for the insignias as the bottom of the first tab. you get 2 gold and possible more from ectos and or exotics. But 2 gold is assured.
30 gold every 2 weeks
orichalcum ores – get all 40ish every day thats 2 ish gold. If you have multiple characters do that multiple times.
laurels – each laurel can net you around 70-90 silver buying the heavy mat bags (1 laurel)
So overall in 2 weeks:
34 gold from missions (not including the rares you get)
20 gold from orichalcum ores (if you do that on ONE character)
10+ gold from laurels (unless you are super unlucky and get no top selling mats)
Total of 64 gold.
If you did nothing else than just that, within a month if it cost you 120 gold to lvl 400-500 crafting, you have it done.

I just hope the color option reward is something that can be worked toward later so that everyone who is taking their time making the backpack can get it instead of only those rich enough to ascended it during the event itself can benefit.
it may be a reward or MFed like the back piece who knows. And its just changing the colors of the glow. You can get this core and hold onto it while you finish the ascended back piece.
Just because those that had the money or had their crafting at 500 can do it NOW doesn’t mean you should able to do it NOW. It also doesn’t mean everyone should have them.
I don’t have the glowy skull shield thing from 2 halloweens ago. Does that mean Anet MUST bring it back since i didn’t get a chance at it? No.
I think the point of this backpiece was to gather mats enough to make up to exotic and have enough shards left over to eventually make the ascended back at your own pace.
Demanding or even asking for the same reward as those that have farmed and got crafting up to 500 and all the mats, is selfish.
You don’t get 23 million dollars a year for flipping burgers.
The point is, do it at your own pace. The fact you can’t get it done NOW is irrelevant and your problem.

When I said new player, I did not mean like a week old. I have been here since October, but I don’t have hours upon hours every day to dedicate to the game. I don’t want it to be handed to me on a silver platter either, just make it not cost 100+ gold to get this thing. and by adding the aura to the lower levels would not hurt people with the ascended because they have the highest number of wings. the people with only 2 wings and glowing would not affect the people with like 8 and glowing.
when I say screwed out of I meant that you basically have to have the reward from this event maxed out in order to get the reward from the next one. so what if you cant farm 100 gold to get a 500 crafting skill? what if you weren’t here for the event due to vacation or something that came up? how is that fair to them? again, I don’t want it handed to me on a silver platter, just make it not cost my social life to get
Here is the rub.
They have to make some things a time sink or EVERYONE will have them within 2 days of the event going live. If not its detrimental to the game.
With your situation:
farm the shards. 900 ish. That doesn’t take that long and can easily be done during the 2 week period (or longer) they give us.
farm the ascended mats
farm the ores
look for the fast or cheapest ways to level up crafting
Gather as many crafting mats you can, buy some of the rest
TAKE THE TIME YOU NEED TO MAKE IT

you really don’t get champ bags in any efficient want in this even since the events are timed or 1 escort which isn’t a fast respawn.
But also farming the bags themselves isn’t worth it either (for those there from day 1). I mean they are if you want the endless quaggan tonis to hold onto and sell in the future. So i guess a year from now, it might have been worth the hours on end.
probably going to be Ascended normal back piece, 250 shards, core, something to make the colored blades.
I am holding onto my 1000 just in case they add something to help us get rid of them outside of the back piece. I also wouldn’t pe surprised if 1000 make soime item which is actually used to make the core in the MF.

Back needs:
900 shards (SUPER EASY)
normal mining ores for ingots (EASY)
Gift of blades (easy as long as you eventually level up the crafting to 500 which isn’t THAT expensive)
time
backpiece blueprint (can get from green bags OR mystic forge 4 fragments which are bought on the TP (like 1 silver if that) or get out of bags)
Ascended timed mats (just spend the 47 ish gold on elonian squares, saves you 15 days of waiting)
If you want the backpiece on day 1 as a new player, you are literally being dumb. Those that made the backpiece for the most part have been playing for months it not since release and tons every day.
You can get the all the necessary pieces without farming every day for 12 hours. It just means it will take you longer.
Ascended mats minus the Emp frags are super easy to get. Emp frags you can get form JPs and mini chests. If you do WvW you get them there is much better amount. If you are on server that does friday karma trains in WVW you can get them extremely fast.
If you bought all the mats for the back, it gets to be like 50-70 gold depending when you bought the items and what you already head or wanted to farm yourself.
Light of Dwayna costs near 270 gold to make since most people didn’t have 4000+ silk, 600 linen etc just lying around. Not including 50 icey runestones (50 gold).
So instead of whining and asking for stuff to be given for you with putting in no time, research the item and then you would find out you can still make it easy. You just won’t be able to make it 2 days into the event.

The fight relies on you to not have constant 15 mil hps on the wurms because of the scaling bug (last BG fight before this post it was about 5 changes during the burn phast, 1.3 mil to 15 mil). If you get past phase 1, you ALSO have to get lucky that 1 (2 usually) of the heads aren’t running around like crazy for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Blackgate last night got Dead, 1%, 2%. One was running around the other 2 stuck in place for a bit or in Crimsons case, for like 40+ seconds.
Lets also mention the timer starts before you can start, 10 seconds worth.
Fix all the problems especially that 10 seconds you can’t touch it but lose. All known by Anet, lets see what they fix. That will alleviate some of the problems with the 2 minutes. Since this was made for the top 10% of servers (which is somewhat odd since there is no real gear progression), do not change the timer. Just needs to allow for that extra 10 seconds which i assume was not meant to tick down until it was vulnerable.

It could be too they’ll patch it later to make them tradeable to stop the sell of them within the first few hours for like 200g+…It’d be cool if they were tradeable..but it’s not that huge of a thing in the grand scheme of things. They could always patch it later, so people should just keep trying. But if you don’t try at all, and wait for anet to make it tradeable, then there’s a good chance you won’t get it at all.
well if people are smart they don’t buy it until the last week or few days before the content is done. So people can throw it up there for 300 g but doesn’t mean it will sell. The first Teq mini was 1700. The first to sell i think was like 6-700? It then crashed in price like all the rest. The only mini that didn’t crash overall was Kasmeer during that event. That went up.
It’s the FIRST day people, COMON. It could be at 10%, or 5%… (heck even at 25% you might not get it after 10 keys…)
Before claiming it should be tradable so you can buy it for 100-200g+ within the first 12 hours, give it a few days. I’ve known several in game (including myself) that have gotten one already, so they don’t seem to be that rare. Instead of asking anet to once again let people throw massive amounts of golds to get stuff within under 24 hours, just be patient.
You’re basically saying “If you can’t get it in a few keys, it should be tradeable.” You have what…2 weeks? Just keep at it. You can’t just throw gold at everything
If the mini would be sellable “at a manageable price” like others have in the past, then they’re normally fairly common. If they’re actually rare, they tend to cost hundreds of gold. So, for once anet made a collectable you can’t just immediately buy, you gotta do the event and hope to get it. This isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last, that they do this.
The problem being is that the majority of attention span doesn’t last that long.
You tell people that they have two weeks to get keys, but watch after this weekend, the content will be deemed as ‘not rewarding’ or the people that got their items due to Our Lady of kittenty RNG will have gone off to do other stuff (See: Halloween Labyrinth).
So in reality, if you don’t get these items within the first 3 days, you’re kinda done.
Yep. Even after the first few hours, even overflows didn’t have any zergs for the most part. 10 people isn’t the 30 that were doing it before.
For those of us that want the mini and haven’t got it after a few days, we will have to spam do the floor 3 port spot chamber (if that screenshot up there is legit). Its a little bit bad design to obtain the mini. Not having it sellable makes it worse.
I still don’t really understand the problem. I hate RNG as much as the next guy (over 200 rank chests and still no ascended!, never gotten an exotic worth more than ~1.5g, you get it….), but there isn’t a problem. There is ONE mini you AUTOMATICALLY get by doing the meta. Then there is another than is RNG. However, this isn’t different than any other update where they have done this, whether it was rare skin drops, mini’s, etc. They didn’t make Sunless items tradeable, they won’t make a mini tradable, when they’re already giving one automatically. The only reason that I see that it’s a problem now is the hybrid mini looks kitten. But, they’re still giving you one mini for free. If they allowed it all to be given out the first day, then there’d be even more people complaining how they got all the stuff day 1 and now there’s nothing to do and the update sucks, and how anet sucks, and how they need more content (from past LS updates). This at least is their (semi-bad) way of keeping people playing the content.
Also, for those who don’t know: the mini hybrid is as bad as an asura. I’m a medium build asura, and its very tips are at the height of my asura’s fro. Are they eventually going to make a mini that is bigger than asura? LOL
I don’t mind the RNG but they did make other RNG minis in events like this sellable (kasmeer, Faren, Rider, Mini Holographic knight etc).
My problem is they have mentioned 2 ways of getting it which apparently one is wrong. There is also one that isn’t mentioned. I just wish they would have been clear on how to obtain the hybrid. “Destroy enemies” seems very much like a random drop off ANYTHING toxic in there. Apparently this is not the case (unless someone has gotten it off random toxic stuff).

Just wondering if this was a misstatement by them since it seems people are only getting the hybrid from chests and that the nimross is ONLY from the achievement. They then talked about the Tri key chest and its possible rewards but said nothing about the other chests. So really they screwed up the communication here.
tbh should just start karma train now. Could get every ones metas done in 2 days!

What I don’t understand most is why there are many IRON members are crying at ZD PvD?
ZDs got the Hello Kitty pez dispenser that they wanted.
IRON joins SoR – weeks of SoR chest thumping pvd “WE IS BETTER THAN YOU!”
ZDs joins BG – SoR QQs more than a 5 year old girl that didn’t get her Hello Kitty Pez dispenser.

Enough already with the chest thumping, accusations, etc. BG has better coverage than SoR does now. This is not about who the best is, it is about who has more people. Simple as that. That is why WvW is some what of a joke because there is real no skill in it. Just stack you server the most to get easy wins. Just that simple and that is the way it is. Until Anets figures out a way to balance WvW population, this is the way it is going to be.
The only way to balance it would be to put a system in that can control the population of the maps. So if 10 people go in one map, 10 are allowed from each other world. This would also spread people out to different servers because no one is going to sit in a que that long when fighting a lesser volume server.

The best way is to do the out manned thing in fights alone, not so much entire maps. A group of 80 against a group of 40. The 40 would get buffs to do more damage.
The thing is even 80 vs 40, the 40 can still win. Not at a good clip, but can. I have seen many fights with SoR where unless they have superior numbers they run. When i say superior, i mean 20+ more. But its really up to commanders. TW i have seen go at a 40 man zerg with 20, RUIN did the same when we were more active. Every once in a while SoR and BG have good fights (at least when i am there). TC is persistent as hell. Sitting in BG Bravost for 2 hours trying to take BG Valley. That was very fun to defend.
BUt yes overall WvW is somewhat dumb. Its all about coverage and no skill can overcome skill by hilarious numbers.
