precast backstab on mug? You mean precast Cloag & Dagger? Or are you using the Stealth on Steal trait?

It doesn’t apply to backstab unless you quickly precast it with mug, so you are revealed before backstab lands.

But if Mug reveals you you will not get a backstab

Or is this some ‘bug’/‘glitch’/‘exploit’?

Mug is insta-cast. You pre-cast backstab and then steal in the middle of the animation. The mug does damage, so you’ll get revealed. Because you’re already in the middle of the backstab animation, you’ll land the backstab damage once that animation is finished, with the Revealed debuff.

As for revealed training in general, I don’t think it’s terribly powerful because it forces you to trait 6 into DA. I can see some application for pistol whip or p/d power builds though. I can’t see this becoming popular for backstab builds because it forces you to trait away from Trickery, CS, or SA. Not to mention the fact that you can only mug every 21 seconds at best.

Wow, this thread survived a day without getting closed.

Anyway, I’m pretty interested in how GoM will do against Silver servers, especially since I still have some friends there.

However, if what I’m told is true, I don’t see GoM doing well — unless they get out of EB. I get that in Bronze, EB is usually where the fights are, but in Silver and above, your attention should focused on the BL’s because that’s where most of the points come from.

Best weapon set for shatter build...

In PvP, I prefer Staff and Sword/X.

Staff brings so much extra mobility, and there are so many spots that you can abuse using phase retreat.

Sword for the immobilize. The offhand weapon will vary depending on situation. Torch if I feel I need to play defensively, pistol if I need more dps (magic bullet also sets up for shatters nicely).

Random addendum: I think blade training is better than far-ranging manipulations. More blurred frenzies and more illusionary leaps.

As Season 2 comes to a close, I want to bump this thread to emphasize a few points.

1) IoJ is still looking for any guilds interested to help us stabilize in T3.
2) Unlike many other servers, IoJ has historically and will continue to maintain a strong presence post-season. This is a major growing time for us, and we’re excited to move up.
3) Our NA presence has significantly improved, with a number of new guilds forming and many more GvG/zergbusting guilds in the field.
4) Our OCX and EU crews are still very strong and only getting better.

We’re still a great, open, and friendly community that welcomes any guilds looking to make a tangible difference.

[WvW/PvP] Condition Shatter

in Mesmer

Frankly, I question the burst potential of this build. To begin, it’s already difficult to call this a shatter build without critical infusion and deceptive evasion.

At best, I’d call this a condi bunker build that shatters for extra damage. Most of your damage will probably come from scepter 2, scepter 3, and torch 4. I also question why you take greatsword over staff here, especially since you trait into chaotic dampening but not into sharper images.

If you wanted to really increase this build’s burst potential (and its fidelity to shatter builds), I recommend traiting 20 into dueling to grab sharper images and deceptive evasion. I’d also swap to full rabid, trade torch for pistol, and add energy sigils.

2) Stale matchups, with no chance of finding more even matchups. Locking servers in a League for 2+ months is a terrible idea because server population and effort drastically change in that time frame. The top servers get bored, and the bottom servers collapse.

The part where you are wrong:
The leagues actually create MORE varied matches. That’s just the nature of the swiss style tournament.

This may be true in your league, but in NA silver, the matchups were incredibly stale. Every week was HoD vs. FA vs. SBI/YB; SBI/YB vs. IoJ vs. CD/NSP; CD/NSP vs. BP vs. SoR. Only in the final two weeks are the servers pushing hard and spicing up the matchups, but for the better part of 2 months, the matchups were exactly the same.

If Anet wanted more matchup variety, locking servers in Leagues isn’t the way to do it. Rather, they could just modify the Glicko algorithm.

servers can fight for points in this final week, but the final position of the tournament is still determined by HoD’s position in this week’s match up.

Exactly right. If HoD throws this week, then if YB wins, they’ll place 2nd overall. If SBI wins their matchup, then SBI and IoJ will tie for 3rd overall. FA will end up in 5th. That’s actually quite the turn of events.

Please, no more Seasons

in WvW

Posted by: mango.9267

mango.9267

This thread serves no purpose other than to beg Anet not to implement Season 3. Seasons 1 and 2 were both failures for the same reasons:

1) Huge population shifts and imbalances, with no time to adjust Glicko and server rankings to respond to them. Pre-season, the massive migrations tear apart lots of lower tier communities. Post-season, the bandwagons fall apart and servers burn out, destroying even more communities. (Part me suspects that Anet condones this because it’s the only way to keep WvW from being completely stale, and it offers nice returns in gem sales).

2) Stale matchups, with no chance of finding more even matchups. Locking servers in a League for 2+ months is a terrible idea because server population and effort drastically change in that time frame. The top servers get bored, and the bottom servers collapse.

These two problems are symptomatic of a larger problem endemic to WvW: a poorly designed scoring mechanic centered around large population imbalances. It’s just that without the incentive of Seasons, this PPT/population problem isn’t as daunting because servers can rise and fall in the rankings fluidly. I don’t expect Anet to fix this problem any time soon, if ever, but I do plead that there be no more Seasons.

Are there any tiebreakers in Season 2?

in WvW

Posted by: mango.9267

mango.9267

Does it really matter?

Yes, it matters a lot. As we approach the final weeks of the tournament, the strategies of many servers depend on whether or not Glicko will be used as a tiebreaker. For example, if Glicko will be used to tiebreak, it may not be wise to go all out in week 8 and land in a tougher matchup in week 9, which will deflate your Glicko. Alternatively, if Glicko won’t be used to tiebreak, it’d be better to go all out in week 8 and ensure a higher placing, regardless of outcome in week 9. This is the situation for a number of servers.

there was no tie breaker in Season 1.

and if you look at this leaderboard https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/en/na/wvwsilver , the is no tie breaker for tournament position.

There are no tiebreakers on the leaderboards, but Glicko is still used in case of ties for matchup determination. It’s not crazy to think that Glicko might be used to determine post-season rewards.

Again, would be nice to get a dev response.

I know Glicko is used to determine matchups in case four servers have the same number of tournament points. However, is it also used to determine placement at the end of season? If two servers have the same number of tournament points at the end of season, is the one with the higher Glicko rating ranked higher?

Consider taking scepter/pistol or scepter/torch instead of staff. Since you’re running rabid and PU, you should be able to survive without staff.

Thief GvG build

in Thief

mango.9267

S/D P/D or S/D SB in zerker gear put out plenty of damage. Paired with the access to daze and immob it is quite potent.

The situation goes like this: An enemy is out of position, you or your periph leader calls target. You Sword 2 to target (immob), Dagger 5 (stealth), Tactical Strike (daze,), auto attack chain, waiting to steal (daze, blablaTrickery, mug damage/heal) any critical cast. Your 1, 2, or 3 periphery teammates also converge on your dazed, immobilized target, making quick work.

If the target somehow escapes (using their stunbreaks), swap pistol, immob/vuln shot, cast basilisk, auto attack freeze, cast immob shot, steal+cnd unload, dagger 3 blink/torment, and find next target.

I am in [EP] GvG/Raiding and [Grim] Roaming.

I think s/d+d/d would be a good set for that kind of playstyle.
s/d for the immo/daze/aa chain cripple then CnD swap weps to get the nice BS off.

No cleave
No poison on downed

The problem with S/D like this fella described it is it’s too slow, and allows for an easy escape.

Quick Stun or Quick Immob and then bam downed

s/d does cleave. You can still poison from mug and shortbow.

s/d gives access to both hard and soft CC’s with daze, immob, and cripple. The auto chain does good damage. s/d 3 also strips boons, which is great when coupled with bountiful theft; you can precast s/d 3, then hit the second part of the chain with your steal, stripping 3 boons instantly. Overall, it’s a great GvG set, especially when paired with a good shatter mesmer.

A teef’s role in GvG is usually to havoc/gank enemy backliners who are out of position.

Most popular builds are the standard d/p and sb, x/6/6/x/x, or trickery heavy d/p or s/d with sb, 2/6/0/0/6. That said, I do think some new builds might be possible with p/d, strength runes, and revealed training. I also think d/p with 0/6/6/2 or 0/6/5/3 could become very popular with strength runes.

sorry but its very very obvious u dont play mesmer. u main another profession that cant deal with mesmers thats why u come here to whine.
there really isnt much left for mesmers to spec into. if u nerf our main dmg dealers then u would have to buff our other weapon skills. if u nerf pu or rework it, u would have to give mes a buff to be able to survive better.
honestly, very bad acting like u were a real mesmer that mains this class. golden raspery for u!

Man, this post is much more whiny than OP’s post. Calm down and breathe. For what it’s worth, he did say he’d like to see other aspects buffed to compensate.

I kinda agree with OP. That said, if Anet nerfed phantasms, mesmers would be much less viable in PvE.

From a PvP standpoint, I do think phantasms are a bit strong. They do heavy damage while letting the mesmer kite around, promoting passive gameplay. I think buffing weapon damage and buffing shatters could be a nice way to promote active gameplay without destroying the class.

Thieves and Small Group Command

I command on thief using valk armor and cav/zerk trinkets with 30 SA. I’d aim for 2.7k armor and 17k hp minimum. That’s usually enough to keep me alive longer than my pugs, and the heavy stealth makes it difficult for the enemy to focus on me. Shadow rejuvenation is crucial, since the heal from that is enormous.

If you still have trouble surviving, you could try soldier’s/cleric’s gear with 10/0/30/30/0 with mug, shadow’s rejuvenation, assassin’s reward, and vigorous recovery. Abuse your dodges, stealth, shadowstep, and infiltrator’s arrow. For pugmanding, this should keep you alive long enough to outlast most of your zerg.

Just don’t expect to zergbust with any thief build. It’s not an ideal commanding class, and there’s really no good way to remain on the front line.

Also OP, even if it’s not a shatter build it’s still good to throw in shatters. Shatters give you more options defensively and offensively so dismissing them completely is a bad idea. Especially since you don’t really have enough phantasm traits to make this a good phantasm build and you have high enough power to make Mind Wrack hit for decent damage. Using all the tools given to you will just make your overall play style better too. Just my thoughts.

Well said. Just because you don’t build for shatters don’t mean you shouldn’t shatter at all. There were a number of situations in the video where a mind wrack or distortion would have made a huge difference.

I think having insane access to Chaos Armor via a quick and simple blast finisher would be close to overpowered.

Chaos Armour is considered to be a mostly useless Staff #4 skill and the worst combo effect in PvE. How can it be “overpowered”?

Chaos armor is far from useless. I can see how it’s underpowered in PvE, but chaos armor is a great defensive option in PvP settings.

And having access to a non-kitten blast finisher would give us insane access to chaos armor how exactly? We can already have as much access as is possible via the use of the leaps on mainhand sword and staff. The limiting factor is the fields, not the finishers.

I never said blast finishers would give us “insane access to chaos armor”. I just responded to the point about chaos armor being useless. For what it’s worth, I do think mesmers need a better blast finisher than the prestige…

Well it seem like server unofficial alliances and match manipulation is the way forward. Well done anet now not only you can buy guild you can buy server as well. As if the unbalance is not bad enough. I will wait and see how people will react when unofficial alliances and match manipulation happen on their server. Only by then people will see the problem it create.

It won’t happen outside of T1 in NA. It has to have the agreement and cooperation of all major and minor guilds on 2 servers. I think in any other instance, such a meta may have never been created at all.

Actually, alliances and match manipulation happen all the time. Not all of them are as consistent or long-lasting as the JQ/TC alliance. But servers in the past have definitely made alliances and manipulated points. The most notable example in recent memory was the YB/EBay alliance last season.

To address blur’s point, it won’t be a problem. Anet has already given the passive okay on this. And it’s unlikely to be maintained offseason, when there’s no motivation to manipulate matches.

The YB and EBay alliance I would say, is similar to the BG/SoR alliance in S1, where we focused down JQ. I’m pretty sure YB and EBay weren’t protecting each other’s structures if they were in danger of being flipped by SBI and karma training SBI’d structures by having 2 map zergs inside a keep and waiting for RI cool down to swap caps

To my understanding, that’s exactly what happened. YB and EBay protected each other and only hit SBI. When YB had enough of a lead, they purposely gave up their structures to EBay and let EBay gain enough points to overtake SBI, putting SBI into third.

“Glass” usually specifies builds with very few defensive options, not just zerker gear or low armor. By taking PU, torch, staff, decoy, disenchanter, and mass invis, you actually have a ton of defensive options. Your gear might be glassy, but the build itself is actually on the defensive side.

That said, a couple of things: I noted you always cancel your blurred frenzy if you see it miss. Why not just go through with it? Even if it doesn’t hit anything, you get some nice evade frames. I also notice you very rarely use your shatters, but there were a number of times a distortion could have secured a stomp or a mind wrack could have finished your opponent earlier.

To be honest, I doubt any condi mesmer build can reliably kill a dire p/d teef, skill being roughly equal. At best, you’ll tie after an extended fight, and at worst, they’ll stealth off your clones and make you play to their rhythm, eventually killing you when you mess up.

If it’s the first matchup – people just don’t show (queues on all maps are gone within 2 hours on Friday night) whereas for the second – well we’ve had off and on queues for different maps all weekend

I’m sure the same problem plagues CD and NSP.

As for IoJ (and I imagine FA/BP), getting second for many weeks straight is pretty boring as well. Not only is there no match-up variation, but repeatedly placing second leaves you in limbo, where the hardcore players still feel the need to push (at the risk of placing 3rd) and the fairweathers just don’t show up.

Not engaging is fine of course, I’m talking about situations where both parties happily engage each other 1vs1 but then resort to fleeing or calling for help once they start losing.

If you didn’t /bow or arrange a duel, then there’s nothing wrong with engaging and running. The losing party might want to preserve his stacks or continue onto an objective. Dying would mean losing his stacks and having to run a long distance to his objective.

You can call it cowardly, but WvW is meant to be an uncontrolled, open PvP environment where you should realistically expect this type of action. The mechanics of actual PvP discourage this kind of action.

Mid-season, end-season.. it won’t make a difference. You’ll go all out but your opponents will go all out also.

Yes, that’s true, but the question is who’s been holding back more. For example, I see a lot of YB’s NA players staying up late into OCX. The same isn’t true for IoJ. Thus, if push came to shove, it seems IoJ gains more by going all out. Of course, I don’t know how hard YB/SBI are trying, so I can’t make an accurate assessment. The point is that it’s far from clear how the matches will play out at the end of the season.

As for YB/SBI/IoJ: Irrelevant because that’s a matchup that won’t happen. The fact is that it’ll be YB/IoJ/NSP and SBI/IoJ/CD every other week and the way it always goes is that the weakest server in the matchup will be hitting IoJ most often; if for no other reason than the fact that the top server will have more upgraded towers and so harder to hit.

I brought up YB/SBI/IoJ to address the claim that coverage was too large between adjacently ranked servers. SBI, YB, and IoJ are adjacently ranked but not too different in coverage/population. I’m aware the match-up won’t happen during the season.

Wow. No credit to NSP.

I credit NSP for playing strategically, but it’s pretty obvious that NSP alone doesn’t have the coverage or population to match IoJ’s PPT. I doubt NSP would have been able to pull off what they did if the third server didn’t focus on shutting IoJ down early.

The way I see it, YB/SBI/IoJ would be a fairly even and well-rounded match-up post-season.

Sadly, 1 of us will always be stuck with FA and the other T2 leftover flavor of the week (HoD / DB/ Mag).

Unless Anet changes the RNG for post-season match-ups to allow more variation. Then there’s hope that one the T2 servers get a low-roll and T3 servers actually get a good match-up.

Really though, I think the point he is trying to make is that he doesn’t see the difference between cheating by win trading and cheating by hacking. If players all started hacking as a response to their rigging matches though, I do have to say that sounds even worse to me.

Really? You don’t see a difference? Like how Anet explicitly condones 2v1’ing stronger servers but bans people who exploit into towers? The slope is quite slippery on BG.

As for “win trading”, this happened last season in Silver with YB and EBay. Not only did YB and EBay double team SBI, YB let EBay hold onto its assets last minute and ended up putting SBI in third, eventually depriving SBI of a second place finish in Silver. They did the same thing to BP a week later.

Not only was Anet perfectly fine with this, but players in general applauded YB and EBay for the coordination. Sure, there were a few bitter players on SBI/BP, but no one QQ’d so much that the entire front page of this forum is effectively flooded by their tears.

I’ll let you in on a secret. WvW isn’t fair. Players from every other server have realized this long ago, and BG bandwagoners are just realizing it now. Playing for rewards is meaningless, both for the victor and loser. Have you ever considered playing WvW for fun or for the community? Like engaging in epic battles or roaming with your friends? There’s more to the game than a couple of weapon skins…

Reread it before trolling it.

The first part, about hacking being equivalent to 2v1’ing/win trading, is addressed to him. The second part, about rewards being meaningless, is addressed to you. Who cares if JQ/TC trade wins? That’s part of 2v1’ing, and Anet has already explicitly said they condoned it. They condoned it last season with YB/EBay, and they’ll condone it this season with JQ/TC.

Sure, there were a few bitter players on SBI/BP, but no one QQ’d so much that the entire front page of this forum was effectively flooded by their tears.

You can have surges where you make up lots of points in a short period of time, but in the end, they’re unsustainable.

That’s exactly the benefit of this structure of this season. You don’t have to consistently beat your opponents. You only have to beat them for a week. Pulling in overtime at the end of the season is all you need to do to ensure the rewards. There’s no reason to put in consistent effort and get burned out.

Population/coverage gaps are too big between even servers that are adjacent in ranking.

Are you even in Silver League? If you were, you’d realize that the population/coverage gaps between YB/SBI/IoJ aren’t that large. Again, the first YB/IoJ/NSP was extremely close in score. The reason that the scores don’t appear as close as they should is because (1) servers aren’t going to go all out mid-season when end-season is all that matters and (2) there’s always a weakest server (CD/NSP) that fails to relieve pressure from the second place server. If the match-up were YB/SBI/IoJ, the scores would actually be very close, assuming all three servers were fighting it out without an agenda.

The NSP vs IoJ a couple weeks ago is a good example. NSP was doing great but that’s because people were putting in LOTS of exta hours. But that couldn’t be sustained. In the end NSP was crushed by a fairly large margin.

Again, that wasn’t so much NSP as it was YB. YB spent a lot of resources shutting IoJ down early. NSP just reaped the benefits by backcapping what YB papered and taking our assets while we were focused on YB.

heh If you wanna fight without honor…I’ll fight sans honor as well…But wvw gets extremely ugly from here out…

There was never “honor” in WvW. How can drastically outnumbering your opponents and PvDooring their structures overnight be considered “honorable”? That’s what determines 90% of WvW outcomes.

The only difference is that BG players QQing here have never experienced what every other server experiences regularly. That’s what makes it so annoying to read.

SO this is what I don’t understand about these posts… you make fun of BG players like NOW YOU KNOW how we feel. WHy are u directing that at the players of BG instead of arenanet? There the ones in charge of balancing the game not bg players, ur complaining to the wrong people and in the process just making everyone mad.

I don’t get it.

This is literally unbelievable. Have you ignored the tons and tons of posts about ways Anet can fix PPT, reduce the influence of coverage, prevent PvDoor, etc., etc.? How have you not read any of those? Or is it the case that because BG players never suffered from any of those problems before that they weren’t pressing enough to address?

We’ve been directing all of this frustration at Anet for over a year. And yet, you somehow missed that and decided that we’re only attacking BG. That’s even more annoying.

1) BG comes to the forums to QQ about being outnumbered.
2) Other servers point out how they have to deal with being outnumbered unfairly all the time.
3) You victimize BG again, claiming we’re venting frustration at BG instead of Anet, ignoring the thousands of threads posted about these problems for over a year. If you’d perused the forums for even 5 minutes, you’d realize that every single issue BG is QQing about has been brought up before.

Again, the reason this is so annoying to read is that other servers deal with situations much worse than the one BG’s in. They QQ far less than BG does and have tried to address the problems productively. But only now that BG is losing, we’re getting flooded by all these posts acting like BG is an oppressed server and demanding a “fair” fight, conveniently ignoring the fact that WvW hasn’t ever been fair and that people have tried to address that since the game’s release.

Well, IoJ isn’t gonna beat SBI. YB, they might have a chance, if they don’t get too far behind on the weekends. They did make up 14k overnight on YB last week, when YB had a 20k lead. They cut SBI’s lead in half last Tuesday overnight, but we weren’t gonna play that game anymore, so we crushed them on Thursday, to ensure they couldn’t do it again.

I was personally commanding that Tuesday night against SBI, when we removed the SM wp, SBI’s entire EB corner, and two of their BL keeps. We couldn’t keep up the momentum because SBI probably realized we could make serious pushes the next few days and because our Oceanics were tired from the YB push the previous week.

Our night crew can do some serious damage if everyone’s on board and we have strong commanders tagged up, but that’s rarely the case nowadays. The reason, again, is that no one feels any incentive to play seriously and burn themselves out. IoJ will have the same number of points as YB/SBI (depending on even/odd week), regardless of whether or not we win the mid-season matches.

The structure of Leagues make it so that there’s no point in playing your hardest until the very end of the season. I’m not saying IoJ will beat YB/SBI, since I’m sure the other two servers will also come out much stronger at the end of the season, but it’s silly to make such strong predictions based on the matches now.

The way I see it, YB/SBI/IoJ would be a fairly even and well-rounded match-up post-season.

i call bs on double teamed.. But you are right, it CAN change…

NSP posted here admitting they were playing for second and focused their attention on IoJ. YB probably didn’t work in conjunction with them, but probably saw IoJ as a larger threat than NSP.

NSP focussed IoJ. YB did it’s own thing (most likely attacked whoever had the most paper towers). It didn’t end up close at all though by the end of the week.

It is possible a server will pull off a miracle. But IMO that’s what it’s going to take to change the final result.

http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/32/165

Notice the borderland focus and EB objectives hit by both servers. First place was <10k difference. Had NSP not focused on IoJ, the results could have easily gone the other way.

But at the risk of getting this closed for being a match-up thread, I’ll simply reiterate that you can’t predict the final results based on past match-ups. Again, there’s no incentive for servers to make serious pushes until the final few weeks. Moreover, servers will get bored of the same stale match-ups over and over again (see HoD and FA this week).

It wouldn’t take a miracle to see a shift in predicted rankings.

Ties are broken by Glicko, so there really are no ties.

I was under the impression that Season 1 allowed ties at the end (at least in terms of the rewards) and that this season would be the same. Did they say otherwise somewhere (makes a HUGE difference in terms of the reward tickets).

A number of other players have confirmed the Glicko tiebreaker (maybe from the dev streams?). That said, it’d be nice to get an official response.

that is true, UNLESS IoJ beats YB/SBI or YB/SBI beat FA…

Won’t happen.

The rest of the matchups for IoJ will be: YB/IoJ /NSP and SBI/IoJ/CD. These matches have already happened (YB/IoJ/NSP twice). Similarly FA’s future matches have already happened: HoD/FA/SBI and HoD/FA/YB.

Just because a mach up has happened doesn’t mean the results won’t change. YB/IoJ/NSP was extremely close the first time, and that was with IoJ getting effectively doubleteamed.

It’s tough to predict how seasons will end because until the final couple of weeks, there’s absolutely no incentive for servers to push their hardest. It doesn’t matter if IoJ or YB wins this week because only the final week will determine who places higher.

For single target encounters, I believe d/d still does more damage than s/d. For multiple target encounters, s/p brings more utility with the evade and blinds, without sacrificing much dps.

It seems like I’d get the best of both worlds by taking d/d and s/p, so I have a little trouble seeing where s/d would fit in.

Unfortunate that weakest is red. I’ve never understood the reasoning behind that. Anz/Mend are very difficult to hold when outnumbered. OW/Overlook will also be constantly treb’d from SM. And since red is the weakest server, they usually have no shot of capping SM.

On the flip side, green corner is probably the easiest to defend with trebs/mortars. Even WC can be defended by keep trebs. This forces enemy servers to cata green’s outer towers, making them that much easier to defend. And since green belongs to strongest server, it’s unlikely enemies will be attacking Lowlands anyway.

I’m definitely thinking that the torment sigils just don’t match up to double energy. Other than that, looks pretty good.

I concur with you on this one. Kind of regret buying torment sigil since one stack per 5 seconds isn’t doing much by itself. Any suggestion on sigil choice that applies more reliable condition? I already have the energy sigils on me.

If you plan on swapping weapons a lot, doom and hydromancy are both good. Mesmers don’t really have a reliable way of applying either poison or chill.
