If this is another “why are they nerfing crit dmg instead of condi” thread, Anet has already stated that their intent is to increase build diversity in PvE (away from full zerkers).

It’s already been beaten to death that this is bad for WvW (and probably bad for PvE too).

Siege Abuse

So you are saying that its not alright for me to drop a flame ram on a dead enemy to prevent their buddies from reviving them easily while they are attacking my keep?

If you play on server X and drop siege blueprints on dead players from server Y, fellow server Y players can still res the dead guy. They have no option of interacting with your siege, since you’re from server X, and they can’t build your blueprints. The reason you get called dirty things is because it’s generally seen as disrespectful.

Unless, of course, you play on server X but have an alt on server Y and drop blueprints on players from server Y. However, in that case, dropping siege is one of the smallest things you can do to grief server Y.

Simple solution I think would be to have an emote in chat that says who is dropping what.

For example:
Trollforfun drops a treb on a gate and in chat his character says " Dropping Trebuchet!"

That way we know who is doing it. Then we name and shame then report them. Just have to have an automated emote linked to siege equipment.

I support this idea, but it won’t prevent griefers from other servers making fresh accounts and draining keep supply. And we know how responsive is to reports of abuse. >_>

[sPvP Build] Prismatic Immortal

At most I will be in stealth for two seconds just to get aegis and extra boon, then move a little to confuse on positioning while either holding a point or capping it.

Two seconds is plenty of time. That could easily be the difference between holding the node and having it decap’d.

I suggest that ppl go try playing PU and ONLY go in stealth when they want aegis or some positional advantage or when they want to escape. The problem is, most new players do not know when they are going to need aegis or what big hits to dodge so instead they will stay in stealth more then needed.

You talk up aegis a lot, but it’s still a 1/3 chance of gaining aegis. That’s not reliable enough, especially if you want to bunker on a node. Sure, you could keep stealthing until you get it, but then you lose the node.

Moreover, why would anyone take a PU bunker mesmer over a guardian? Guards can stay on point longer, have more reliable access to stability/aegis, and bring more group utility to team fights.

I guess I’m not sure where this build would fit in for a PvP environment. It doesn’t look like you’ll be able to bunker as well as tanky guardians/warriors, you don’t do as much damage as /shatter mesmers (you also don’t strip boons), and your utilities suggest you aren’t trying to play any support role.

To play devil’s advocate, it’s not like they can scout at no cost to the server. First, lying there dead is pretty boring, and I doubt anyone would want to do it for more than 30 minutes or so. Second, by lying there dead, the scout is unable to help with other objectives, whether that be zerging, walking yaks, flipping camps, etc.

To play devil’s advocate to your devil’s advocate, a multiboxer could leave his accounts unattended for X period of time and swap items out to refresh his timers every once in a while all while actually doing things on his main account and simultaneously spying on his alt accounts who are lying dead in key locations.

Fair enough, but I imagine it’d be quite a hassle to tab between accounts, and, unless the scout has multiple monitors, it’d probably be impossible to keep constant vigil on what’s happening around his dead alt.

Moreover, in servers with queues, the scout’s alts are still taking up queue space from other players who’d participate in other objectives, so there would still be some opportunity cost.

Dueling/Stacks

I never use consumables/stacks in duels because 90% of the time, the build/skill of the player determines the winner (I want to say it’s mostly build). That said, for closer duels, yes, consumables and stacks do make a significant difference.

Fight club etiquette is that consumables are allowed, but stacks are not. The reason, I imagine, is that the loser loses his stacks on down, so it’d just be really annoying for him to regain his stacks every time he loses. With the changes to guard stacks, this rule might change to only forbid weapon stacks (not that it matters if you’re dueling in OS).

We’re also pleasantly surprised by the numbers CD is able to field. According to Kraven, they’re stretching their legs because they aren’t fighting HoD. Whatever the reason, if CD keeps these numbers up, BP, NSP, and maybe even SBI are in for some rude awakenings.

This looks a lot more like double team than just straight up coverage. Not sure if it’s intentional or what, but kudos to HoD and YB for maintaining it.

Here’s a thought: could FA maintain the lead over HoD on stomps/sentries alone? If FA held at least 1-2 bloodlust at all times and stomped 100-200 HoD every 15 minutes (over all 4 maps), HoD could tick ~100 PPT higher and still not catch up.

From observation, it seems HoD has been ticking higher since OCX/SEA, but still hasn’t overtaken FA. Not sure if this is from stomps or what.

MegaServers Inadvertantly Hurts WvW

A lot of recruiting to get people to come into WvW is done through PvE areas. How do we recruit people for a “Stomp the Map” event now? I can’t say in LA map chat, if you are on GoM come to SF BL to take all their stuff! Oh wait SF you are in this map too?

I dunno that I’m a huge fan of server identity, since it leads to more drama and stress than necessary. That said, I completely agree with this point. On servers with large PvE populations, we often recruit PvE players for WvW events when we need the numbers. For example, if we’re planning a golem rush on an enemy Garrison, we hop into LA and tell the map chat we’re going to golem rush and need some players.

Although the megaserver will prioritize people based on WvW server, the risk is still much higher that we end up revealing our WvW plans inadvertently if we talk in map chat.

Free transfers ruined wvw seasons

in WvW

Posted by: mango.9267

mango.9267

I agree with your sentiment. Free transfers had the opposite of the intended effect, for a number of reasons.

1) Anet didn’t take it account the fact that Glicko ratings didn’t reflect server strength. For NA Silver, BP and YB were on the way down, due to losing a number of guilds, but they couldn’t fall in the ranks fast enough to hit the 13-15 spot for free transfers. As a result, HoD now GROSSLY outnumbers them.

2) Why would anyone transfer to 20-24 when 13-15 are free? If anything, it promotes transferring off the 20-24 servers to the 13-15 servers, which is what happened.

3) Free transfers always promote bandwagoning. Anet probably hoped guilds would spread out across the free servers, but that never happens in practice. Rather, guilds always go where other guilds are going.

I imagine free transfers hurt the rank 20-24 servers and maybe helped some of the 13-15 servers a bit, but at the expense of creating large bandwagon servers and gross population imbalances.

Permanent Stealth

You can no longer permanent stealth. The “infusion of shadows” trait has been fixed. You gain 2 ini when ENTERING stealth. You don’t keep regaining ini when you’re in stealth doing stealth stacking.

You can actually, you just look like a fool doing it.

X/X/20/20/15 (w/e + patience; then w/e with quick recovery) + infiltrator’s signet and blinding powder using d/p. You can toss SR if you feel comfortable but I didn’t have to. Needless to say I didn’t use the build for anything more than seeing if perma stealth still existed, and it most certainly does. Problem is it does you no good.

There’s a pretty OP p/d + d/p perplexity build that runs 0/0/30/20/20. That said, taking patience and quick recovery prevents you from taking better traits.

whats your strategy against pu mesmers?

in Thief

mango.9267

p/d (both power and condi) does very well against PU mesmers. You outstealth them with CnD, and you don’t need to be in melee range to land most of your damage. Just wait in stealth till they pop out and sneak attack from 900 range. Then CnD off clone and repeat. You have more access to stealth than they do defensive maneuvers, so just be patient.

I recommend traiting into blind on stealth, since you’ll be stealthing a lot, and mesmers can’t summon phantasms or hit their scepter torment while blinded.

Even easier if you trait into trickery, since bountiful theft will strip their aegis/protection, and sleight of hand dazes and gives you a 21 sec cd plasma/gap closer.

Server Battle Cry

Not really a battlecry, but a server custom nonetheless: Way back in the day, during the time of the DH/DR/IoJ rivalry, DH and DR accused us of only being good at PvDooring (I guess, since our OCX presence overwhelmed theirs). They renamed PvDooring to “IoJing”, and we’ve since taken on the term in a self-deprecating manner. When commanders ask for damage on gates, they always say “IoJ the gate”. Been over a year now, and we still say “IoJ the gate”.

At some point, we also did everything “For Mother Janthir”; if we wiped a zerg, it was for Mother Janthir, if we capped a keep, it was in the name of Mother Janthir, etc. Someone even wrote a Stalinistic treatise describing our WvW efforts in terms of its impact on “Mother Janthir”.

Sure, we aren’t going to win Silver, but 2nd or 3rd is highly possible.

Looks like the week 3 showdown between FA, SBI, and HoD (or YB if the finish 2nd next week) will probably show who will finish 2nd.

It’s WAY too early to even make that claim. Last season, servers that won at the beginning of the League were losing by the end of it. A lot of things change as the League progresses — PvE players stop achievement hunting, guilds move, people get bored of fighting the same server, new MMO’s are coming out, etc. We haven’t even finished the first week yet. The way it looks now, 2nd – 5th is all up for grabs, no matter who places where in week 3.

FA is 400 ranking point above HoD and 200 above YB, so get ready for a huge shock in coverage. Just being 100 ranking point above a server mean they enough coverage to stomp you. Skill that just varies no matter what server you are on, but the higher tiers have more guilds experienced in wvw. The next match-ups will have alot of lopsided matches

Glicko ratings currently mean nothing, since a LOT of people have moved around just before the Season started, and Glicko hasn’t had time to adjust. HoD sounds like it has more coverage than FA at the moment. That said, they’ll probably still lose because it sounds like they’re squishy/uncoordinated (at least according to CD/NSP).

Right now, you can take Shadow Arts X (Patience), and rotate your d/p 5222 + hide in shadows + blinding powder. If you do it properly, the cooldowns on your utilities and the regen on your initiative should cycle so that you can maintain stealth permanently. If you’re having trouble, you can toss shadow refuge into the mix to do it even more easily.

>>They have the numbers, yes, but I highly doubt they are organised enough to decide who is winning and who is losing

If one gets on very late on HOD which i tend to, those same zergs are not there and the groups that are tend to be very organized.

It is very much a “whatever works thing”. The simple fact is if one vastly outnumbers an opponent , then a Zerg strategy works. Little coordination is needed.

What remains to be seen with HOD is will they get into bad habits and rely on the massive blob strategy when that advantage no longer there , or will those groups that believe in coordination move to the forefront and are there enough of the latter?

The other question that remains to be answered is that off hour coverage. HOD has plenty to deal with CD and NSP but what of those servers with like numbers in those off hour periods?

Here it my guess there will be much less in the way of massive zergs and more in the way of coordinated tactics.

We shall learn soon enough next week and dependent upon how well or how poorly we do , we might see a substantial drop off in numbers.

From what I’ve gathered from this thread, it seems like HoD outnumbers even FA. That said, my general impression is that FA is more coordinated and “fights-oriented” (at least, I know that’s the rhetoric on their server), so I still predict FA beating HoD. If I know anything about fairweathers/PvE players, it’s that they’ll leave after one or two wipes. And if HoD zergs are as squishy as people here make them out to be, I imagine the HoD population will cut in half next week.

Just so we’re on the same page, the warrior steal CAN be cancelled by autoattacking during the spin. It can also be cancelled by using any other skill/utility. It’s just not like dagger storm where you can cancel by dodging, which is probably a good thing, since you want to be saving your dodges.

What are your defenses?

Posted by: mango.9267

mango.9267

Firstly, you’re not talking about actual defense, you’re talking about recovery. Defense prevents you from taking the hits, recovery allows you to keep going after taking them. Mesmer has both.

On mesmer, you shouldn’t be taking that 6k backstab. You should dodge it with blurred frenzy, block it with the sword or scepter block, aegis it with chaos storm, let a clone eat it with deceptive evasion, etc.

Sorry, yeah meant more in the recovery. It’s not as easy as “dodge” or “blurred Frenzy” it, you have to KNOW its coming first. IF you know its coming you do have a few options. However if you don’t know that it is coming and you take the damage which can be done when they have such access to stealth. It is after that that i am having issues with.

Even if they catch you by surprise, decoy, dodge (assuming you have deceptive evasion), and ether feast. Now you’ve recovered most of the damage and you know it’s coming again, so you can abuse all your evades/distortions/blocks/dazes, etc., and you really shouldn’t be hit again.

Pretty much this. You shouldn’t be thinking about what to do after taking a backstab. You should be thinking about how to avoid a backstab in the first place, since that’s where mesmers excel. Abuse your blocks, distortion, daze, evades, blinks, aegis, and stealth. That should be more than enough defensive maneuvers to avoid backstabs.

Also whirling axe does little to no good on a condi thief, so it turns from a dps skill to a highly circumstantial skill for a whirl+projectile reflect which you can never really work with. In the mean time, you can’t dodge out of it so for melee classes, your just a ballerina trying to get unstuck while it covers your 35 second gap closer.

Whirling axe is good even on condi thieves. Whirl in a poison or smoke field. Reflects warriors’ pin down/kill shot, engi pistols, thief pistols, mesmer wind of chaos/iduelists, ranger lb knockback, and more. And if you wanna cancel it, just autoattack… why would you want to use up a dodge for that anyway?

Also none of the stolen skills are impossible to counter.

Isn’t that a good thing? Why do you want something that’s impossible to counter? Play and counterplay makes fights more interesting. And, for the record, most other profession mechanics have counterplay mechanics as well — dodge/blink to avoid shatters, take the flurry and return the bleeds to the warrior, and spam /laugh at ranger pets.

Most of the stolen abilities are really good. Just because there’s counterplay doesn’t change that fact.

Did you miss the part where steal is an instant gap close, boon sharing/stripping machine that dazes and regenerates initiative? Not to mention the stolen skill extremely useful (bar engi). That’s enough utility for a single skill. It’s only a ‘fire-and-forget’ skill to the bad thieves, but in the hands of a good player it’s extremely devastating.

yeah, boons, dazes, regen etc etc

all of that available under only one trait build.

W/o it?
Fire and forget.

Don’t tell me you’re assuming that only good players are using one trait line just to buff up 1 skill and the rest are just bad?

Even without traiting into trickery, steal is still very strong. The instant gap closer is already enough to make it a very viable skill. In addition, many of the stolen abilities are very good — gain all boons, 3 seconds of fear, projectile reflection + heavy damage, etc. It just becomes even better with trickery.

OP’s concern doesn’t seem to be about PvP/WvW, as there’s no randomness about stolen abilities when fighting other classes. He seems primarily concerned about stealing in PvE, where he’s unsure of what he’ll get and whether it’ll be useful.

That said, steal doesn’t need a buff. In a PvP/WvW environment, it’s already strong without trickery, and absolutely amazing with trickery.

Their OCX and EU are doing more than fine right now. We will see during the week, but, so far that seems to be their strong point.

lol @ all these people speculating about FA without ever having fought them since Season 1. I’m pretty confident FA will beat HoD. They don’t have any “gaping holes” in their coverage.

That said, if I’ve learned anything from last season, it’s that predicted rankings based on pre-season scores is meaningless. The PvE influx REALLY skews outcomes, especially in offhour time zones. It seems like this is what’s happening to YB, and if they keep the PvE players in, I wouldn’t be surprised if they placed top 3.

IoJ has less of a PvE effect because most of our PvE players already play WvW; we don’t have that much new blood to tap into. Even though I think we’ll place 2nd or 3rd, I wouldn’t be surprised if we placed 4th or 5th. Again, it’s too hard to call with the PvE effect.

Actually it would be a good way to balance servers by giving servers in the lower tiers free transfers as improved servers would go up and servers that need free transfers would fall down to get the benefit.

This would probably only work at the very bottom, (T7-T8). Otherwise, we’ll just get what we’re seeing now: lots of guilds abandoning T5-T8 servers to join HoD in T4. It makes the bottom tier even more empty and promotes bandwagoning in higher tiers. I think free transfers should only be warranted if the WvW population is actually low enough, and that’s simply not the case for T4/T5 (and perhaps even some T6) servers.

Basically, the goal is to balance low pop servers, but if higher servers are free, guilds generally abandon the low pop server for the higher tier servers, which is just the opposite of what you want. If T4-T6 servers were always free, I bet you’d see no WvW guild left on T7/T8 servers within a month.

That said, to be a bit more objective. Even T2 will probably be fine for you. They’ll probably queue 2 maps or so during NA prime, when you play, but you’ll still be able to raid in other BL’s. T3-T5 are also good options (IoJ, SBI, YB, BP, HoD, CD, NSP), where there will almost never be queues outside of reset. Talk to some people from each server to see what would be a good fit for you.

I probably wouldn’t go too far below T5, since you won’t find as much action. However, since you play in NA, even that might not be much of a problem. Just don’t expect coverage guilds or offhour raids.

Just welcome your new…. I mean returning FA overlords. IoJ is in good position for second unless HoD is more impressive than their score implies.

It’s a shame because if we didn’t have a T2 server in Silver, it’d actually be a pretty interesting league for the top 3 slots, since it seems IoJ/SBI/HoD are competitive with each other. Instead, the top 3 rankings will probably be heavily influenced by the T2 server who doesn’t even want to be there.

That’s true, but they don’t need to keep League static. Set Gold to top 7 such that they all have the highest chances of rolling each other than anyone below, and if they do roll below, it needn’t be the same server that does. Seems like this is possible with Swiss style.

The current system locks one of those servers into 2 months of no fights and boredom. And everyone’s going wild trying to buy guilds, pull all-nighters, throw each other under the bus, etc.

So much godkitten drama about who’s gonna be stuck in Silver. No one wants FA/Mag/DB in Silver — not them, not us, not anyone.

How is ANet so obstinate about the structure of Leagues this time when they changed the structure last minute for Season 1? And why should the structure of Season 2 be the same as the structure of Season 1 when populations and competitiveness have drastically changed since Season 1?

It’s clear that there are four T2 servers that would absolutely roflstomp anyone in Silver and be bored out of their minds. Is there any reason to think that Gold should remain top 6 servers?

Make sure you aren’t using any minis (they follow you around while you’re in stealth). I’ve run into a number of teefs/mesmers who like to show off their mini Karkas, only to eat my free backstabs. Other than that, I dunno what to tell you.

Any chance on posting your build?

What’s the logic behind using scorpion wire in the condi build? Are you mainly just trying to score interrupts for the perplexity stacks?

If you notice he had superior sigil of blood (those rock pillars that bursted around him) he pulls them into the radius of them rocks and then switches weapons(another P/D) to get more bleed stacks on them, pretty innovative if you ask me

Not only that. He’s running perplexity runes, and Scorpion Wire gives you a very short cd interrupt. Sleight of hand + Scorpion Wire gives him 2 interrupts every 20 seconds or so.

That said, I can’t get over how buggy the skill is. An anthill in your path? Too bad, obstructed.

Mendons... time for a rebuild!

The problem is that people think Mendon’s is an inner tower. It’s not. The two “inner” towers in red corner are Veloka and Ogrewatch.

Inner towers can be protected by keep trebs and can treb back to hit INNER of the keep. Veloka and OW satisfy this property. Mendon’s doesn’t. Granted, things become a bit more complicated when you throw SM into the mix, but in terms of keep trebs and ease of upgrade, Veloka and OW are the inner towers.

Mendon’s is basically like QL, except a bit harder to defend. I think this is to compensate for the VERY short yak paths to Veloka/OW.

CD has lost guilds but you know what? We are in the same exact position we were in months ago right at the start of season 1 even after losing over half a dozen guilds.

Yes, but if your competitors are also bleeding guilds to T1/T2 – and I’m fairly sure that applies to pretty much everyone south of Dragonbrand these days – then that’s not really saying much.

Both of you are wrong. The reason CD has stayed in the same position since Season 1 was because all 4 mass exoduses happened before it.

No, we lost 2 major guilds that were good people [KA] and [Tofu] post seasons. We lost a couple havoc groups that were kinda there sometimes and kinda not. that was post season for CD. The gap between t3 and t4 is huge, t4/t5 probably not as bad. These were home grown guilds which stung a bit.

The guilds we lost pre season weren’t really home grown, they came in taught us some new tricks and gave us an umph.

Losing 2 guilds several weeks apart is not an implosion. Losing multiple within 1-2 weeks is an implosion.

I doubt the gap between t3 and t4 is that big anymore. SoR isn’t even t9 at this point, and DB is t2.

We, on SBI, don’t really know what we are, but we were beating BP each match, but I don’t really count that cause we had big brother Maguuma stomping both of us.

Since BP lost LOST, we probably will do better than them, and I think our overnight presence will be what would decide the match with IoJ (we did lose OLAF to Mag, since they purcahsed OLAF from us).

So, we are eager to see how we actually compare to other servers, cause so far, we are outnumbered by Bandwagon server #5 and we outnumber Mass exodus server #1.

Bandwagoning kills communities, and I wonder how many guilds are gonna hop off of TC, SoS, DB, Mag, and FA during and after season 2 based on the pressures of winning, and the drama is causes (that is what broke SBI).

Sorry SoR, but you are in a really bad place right now. I respect everyone that has stayed with the server through all that has happened.

Tbh, I doubt T2 will crash and burn. The WvW population is just shrinking, so in order to get the same fights you got a year ago, you kinda have to transfer to a T3+ server. If for no other reason than this, the T2 servers will probably see a steady stream of transfers as WvW gets emptier and emptier in the lower tiers.

I think this is a terrible policy. With the guilds BP/YB have lost/are losing, I suspect they’re actually competitive with HoD/CD, maybe even a bit weaker. Yet, due to the terrible RNG, BP/YB don’t have enough time to lose ratings, so if guilds do bandwagon to 13-15, BP/YB will be hit the hardest.

Moreover, I’m also against this as someone on IoJ (currently rank 10). We worked our kitten off post-Leagues to climb the ranks, and now we risk getting screwed over by free transfers. I understand the rationale, but Anet needs to look beyond Glicko ratings before deciding to blindly make 13-15 free.
