CoH/CoV (RIP) had a nice mix — you could play as either a hero or a villain, and when they introduced Going Rogue, you could wind up somewhere inbetween morally (the villain who was reconsidering motives/motivations, the hero falling from grace). Plus, the added perk was that each (hero or villian) had their own professions, so it shook things up a bit.

Realistically, they COULD do it in an expansion, with keeping the same races in place, and allowing the option of playing as Nightmare Court, Inquest, Flame Legion, Sons of Svanir, Separatist/Bandit/Pirate, with all new personal stories, zones, etc., and eventually reach a point where the two sections (Heroes and Villains) could co-mingle …

But I don’t really see that as a route they’ll take the game …

How much have you paid to play Guild Wars 2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mojowalker.3798

I think the post’s name is a little misleading. Because technically, since I paid for the game itself, I haven’t had to pay anything to play.

I have, however, chosen to spend money and I’ve spent a few hundred since launch on gems for bank slots, char slots, armor skins, whatevs … but for me, that’s money that would have otherwise gone towards bar-tabs, cab rides, and potentially bail money if i was a bar-hopper. Or perhaps it would have been a few hundred on a new set of clubs and some fancy checkered pants if golf was my thing. Or a few hundred on a new pole, some lures, bait, fishing license, etc., if that’s how I opted to spend my free time.

I don’t regret the money I’ve chucked into the gemstore because I enjoy the time i spend in-game. If I didn’t, I’d be slugging down 40 ouncers on my bass boat while pegging line drives into the trees on shore with my shiny new five iron.

Scaling the event with additional mobs/vets would certainly make things more exciting. I swear it takes almost more time to type, “Troll’s up” in mapchat than it does to take the troll down, with the number of folks camping. But a few vet trolls would certainly make it more challenging — kind of like the champ troll in Wychmire. Still a low-level zone, but that one’s more challenging because of the spawn with the champ, and the tethering where you basically have to fight the kittening thing in that narrow canyon. As it stands now, there’s nothing really “champion” about the champs — at least in Queensdale, anyway.

Well, at least OPENLY, anyway …

On a serious note, though, I echo many of the others’ sentiments — I play because it’s fun, it’s something I enjoy, and it’s a helluva way to unwind at the end of the day. I don’t feel obligated to do anything in particular — just pick a char and begin wandering to see what I can get into, just like Kane from Kungkitten Sometimes it’s DEs, sometimes it’s crafting, sometimes it’s world boss events, sometimes it’s trying to convince the skritt i’m a long-lost cousin … doesn’t matter .. i’m not the type of person to spend an hour or two doing something i DON’T enjoy, unless I’m being paid for it.

How do you distinguish yourself in this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

Simply put, I don’t try to.

I could have the most fantabulous armor and weapon in the game, but if I’m a crappy person, no one is going to notice me, not in the sense you’re looking for anyway. No matter what you wear, or what you wield, if you are not ‘memorable’ as a person, then you are simply more scenery. Noticed for but an instant, and forgotten just as quickly.

The people I notice are those that are quiet, humble. The ones that play simply because they enjoy it. Offering their insight when asked, helping when they see the need, leading when no other will step up to do it. They could be in the crappiest armor in the game, but they are still memorable. Actions speak so much louder than words or looks, and this is what truly makes a person shine.

To seek to ‘distinguish’ yourself through mere armor or weapons alone is simply a display of vanity. A peakitten displaying his tail feathers in the hopes that a female we take notice.

This … I’d rather be known as the person who was always around to lend a hand, even if he had to drop everything he was doing, then to be known as the dude standing there, blinding everyone with my shiny armor/weapon skin that took me “x” amount of tokens, mats, gold, weeks, etc. to obtain, because hey, if I’ve got that, I’ve just GOT to be cool …

Honestly, and maybe it’s just how I look at things, I’m playing to enjoy myself, not to prove anything to anyone. And if I were to see someone that had a “I just did this EPIC event that took me so long I didn’t sleep AND skipped work” t-shirt on, it wouldn’t make an impression on me except for an eye-roll.

But hey — that’s just me.

Why can't everyone use all armor?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

mojowalker.3798

Is this your first RPG? Or have you been playing Skyrim lately?

Not all MMOs have been based on D&D rulesets. There have been quite a few MMOs since the 1990s that have allowed players to wear whatever they want. It’s just more common to follow along the D&D requirements

I played AD&D for years “back in the way”, and while there were some armor restrictions, the fighter class could wear any armor they wanted to … heavy armor just provided a better AC, logically …

But I posted this in a different thread — what if a warrior has honed his/her reflexes and speed to the point armor is worthless to him/her? What if an ele is terrified of getting hit and wouldn’t set foot in the woods without being encased in plate mail? If they’re going to unlock all weapons for all classes, unlock all the armors too!

New dungeon reward system a nerf to alts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

To the restaurant analogy, I guess a fair question would be is do the people running CoF1 over and over on their main/alts truly enjoying themselves the way customers in said restaurant preferred the one dish over the other nine? Or are the people running Cof1 over and over doing so because it is the established belief that is the only viable, time-efficient way of generating income in-game?

To use your analogy wouldn’t it be rather that CoF1 for awhile now has been the quickest way to feel like your hunger had been satisfied, and they’re now trying to expand the palette and let people realize that there are other, just as tasty ways of satisfying that hunger?

Not that it phases me one way or the other … unless they suddenly decide to make dungeons scalable so they can be soloed by anyone who would like to stroll them at an exceptionally leisurely pace.

mojowalker.3798

Is it really that deep if the OP didn’t call it out? Especially given that the troll tends to be up pretty frequently? And when it IS up, it doesn’t last for very long? I’ve been in Queensdale, see the map chat pop “Troll up” … Consider what I’m doing, consider what I want to do, consider how far I am from it, and by that time, map chat pops “Troll down”. He/she not calling it out that particular time may have upset some perfectly laid out strategy for strip-mining events as quickly as humanly possible, but overall I can’t see it amounting to much … be a different story altogether if it only spawned once every 24 hours.

On the flipside, though, when I’m in the cave and I set off the runestone, I do give a shout out that “Troll is up”, or when I see the Wasp Queen or the giant in Nageling, but once I’ve given that shout-out, all bets are off. Much as I’d like to be the best friend to humanity, I’m not going to wait all night for everyone and their sister’s cousin’s husband’s beer-buddy to show up …

I don't like the skins

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

I think overall the more variety the better … Tera-esque armor skins, sure, go for it, more “practical” skins, sure, go for it. Skimpy heavy armor, add that too. Actual armor for light-armor wearers, add it. Shiny, ethereal armor, add it in. Smoky, doom-n-gloom armor, yeah, add that too. All of it and more.

Honestly, and I know there are those that would cry party-foul, I think any of the armors should be usable for any of the professions.

Perhaps a warrior has trained so extensively that he/she doesn’t NEED to wander around in armor that looks like a sherman tank ran into a cuisinart. Maybe an ele is so terrified of wandering around in the wild that he/she would feel defenseless in a silky harem outfit. It’s just a SKIN.

And before anyone chimes in with how a guardian running around in winged armor would destroy the immersion …. c’mon, really? You’ve got people running around, flying kites, with steampunk inspired-armor, riding a witch’s broom while playing a trumpet, with a mini-bikini-clad kasmeer chasing after? What exactly am I being immersed in? The Mad Hatter’s tea party?

If the devs are talking about unlocking all weapons for all professions, why not take the extra step and unlock all armors for all professions too.

Oh, and add a few dozen more skins too. From about a dozen different designers, so they all look unique.

Inflexible Skin System

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

Been mentioned in other threads, but the costume maker from GW1 would be awesome. You buy the skin, you unlock, and you use it as many times as you want, just like the HoM skins. Probably my biggest reticence in buying skins off the Gemstore — don’t want to need to buy more than 1 if I would like to use the same skin for multiple chars. So if not the costumer maker, then either a PvE locker or purchased skins being added to the HoM list.

New dungeon reward system a nerf to alts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

I have 16 alts, and have never run a single dungeon — I don’t see how this is a nerf to alts, so much as it is a possible nerf to those who simply use their alts for multiple dungeon runs.

But is that the biggest reason people have alts?

Or is it just one reason of many? I know there are those that have alts because they want to be able to try out each profession, some because they want to try out each race, some create alts with specific builds/stat stets for specific functions, and some, like me, because they just like creating multiple chars.

Maybe it’s me, but I think it’s kind of a generalized statement to call something like this an all out nerf on people with multiple alts.

I wouldn’t be interested in dueling myself, unless it was a contest of witty comebacks and rebuttals, but by the same token, i don’t see an enable/disable box in the options being a problem either. While there are those who would certainly look at that as a possible sign of weakness or whatever, and then proceed to harass me with snide comments, i think i’d get more of a laugh out of that than anything else.

DUELER: Dude, you’ve got your duel option on disable. You a kitten? Ain’t got the kitten to kittening battle it out, one on one, right here on this mountaintop?
ME: Not particularly. I was just enjoying this bottle of rice wine and watching the way the sunlight plays through the trees.
DUELER: HA! I kittening knew it. You are a kitten and have no skills.
ME: HA indeed! I’ve got a full time job, a house with a mortgage, two boys, and the moment I feel the need to “prove” myself to be a “man” by utilizing my “mad skillz” in a video game is the moment I will check myself into the nearest psychiatric ward for rehabilitation. Care for some wine?
DUELER: Kitten you.

But, by all means — if that’s something that people would find enjoyable, have at it! Just provide me with the option to disable that content.

Confirmed altaholic, with 2 of each class and an extra warrior to spare. And I agree with several that have posted; each of them is unique, has a distinct personality, look, playstyle, etc. And I won’t mix and match, meaning that my staff ele wouldn’t even consider using anything but, my longbow ranger wouldn’t touch a shortbow, etc. I would love it even more if, like in City of Heroes (RIP), there was the option to include the char’s backstory within the char profile. I always found that to be the most time-consuming aspect of the char process in CoH.

All that being said, I’m looking forward to the possibility of all weapons becoming unlocked for all chars for an even greater degree of variety because hell, chars change over time … maybe the GS warrior gets tired of lugging the thing all over Tyria and decides to go dag/dag, maybe the rifle engi that winds up toting the flamethrower most of the time goes with an axe in each hand … lots of possibilities there …

And I have still have two empty char slots just waiting for the when (won’t say if) the first new race/class is released …

I believe the significant change to the previous months’ (going back to Wintersday and Mad King I think) models is going to be the availability to obtain the skins via the TP. Don’t want to risk buying the keys to open chests? Don’t. Sooner or later (and my guess is sooner, since the first people to obtain the skins who are just looking to turn a profit will be dumping them on the TP for 500% of what they’ll sell for a week from now) some/most/all even, perhaps, of the skins will be available on the TP. The price may be more than some are willing to spend right away, but the point is they aren’t locked behind RNG boxes, frustrating the hell out of tons of people whose luck just straight-up sucks … like my own.

-first 4 weeks of improved gold find! MORE SHINNIES!!!
-Research into the fractial: The Final Shiny War. That depicts the last war between shiny hoarding asurans and the noble skritt!
-Adding a new minigame “Shiny Vs Shiny Vs Shiny”

where three teams of skritt(players) fight on a map littered with shinnies (environmental weapons) each team must secure them before the competitors do. Each player has no skills and must rely on the environmental weapons to stop enemy skritt. Each shiny captured causes a skirtt follow the player and access to non-combative skritt skills. at 5 skritts you gain the superpowerful “For the Shinnies!” skill that causes all your skritt to go berserk on any enemy skritt that are holding a shiny.

THIS! I would play that minigame all day long, forego work, sleep, food … ALL for the shinies …

And IF somehow Skirtt became a playable race, I’d abandon all attempts at a social life, fortify my man-cave, and spend the rest of my days wandering around, attacking things, just so I could hear my char shout, “Kill it!!!”

All for the shinies!
And if the Skritt King could convince the powers that be that skritt should be a playable race, all the better!

Aside from the many wonderful suggestions here, someone mentioned a norn wrestling and i think it would also be sweet to have an unarmed combat choice …

WARRIOR: Wrestling (suplex anyone?)
GUARDIAN: Aikido
RANGER: Silat Pattani
ENGI: Judo
THIEF: Kungkitten
NECRO: Taekwondo
MESMER: Savate
ELE: Bare-Knuckle Brawling

That being said, however, not sure how an Asuran ele trying to bare-knuckle brawl a giant would look …

How are you able to just enjoy the game?

I’ve got 17 chars, 3 at 80 decked out, the rest at various levels from 5 on up … and to be honest, how I do it? It’s because I spend the rest of my day chasing after the so-called carrots that come from work and other RL pursuits which have more than enough “requirements”, “tasks”, “responsibilities”, etc. …

So when I log in? It’s to enjoy myself with NOT having to do anything in particular. Pick a char, play him/her for awhile, whether it be DEs, dailies, world bosses, or just straight-up getting lost somewhere i haven’t been in a few weeks/months.

Get bored with that char? Switch, go wander off to do something else. As I posted on a different thread at one point, even though I have dupes of each class with an extra warrior on top, each of them are different, and though I could set them up with the same weapons/armor/whatnot, I don’t, because in my head, they’re all unique.

In all reality, I think it becomes a question of mindset, as you yourself pointed out and many others have seconded. Once a “game” begins making you feel, think, believe you HAVE to do something in order for it be enjoyable, that’s when it ceases to be enjoyable. NEED a legendary? NEED ascended gear? NEED windcatcher back skin? I don’t NEED any of those to play the game, nor do I NEED them to enjoy the time I spend in-game. Want them? Sure, maybe, perhaps, don’t know … but many folks confuse desire and necessity on a regular basis.

Is the NEED mindset curable? Sure. Easy? Not so much.

But for me, if I wanted to feel like I was being forced to do something i didn’t particularly enjoy, I’d just go back to the office — at least there I’d be getting paid for my time.

Def a soloer … once upon a time, in Pirates of the Caribbean online (yeah, I know) and then in GW, there was a small, tight-knit group of friends I played with, but years pass, lives drift in different directions, etc.

I think the difference between something along the lines of Skyrim as opposed to GW2 is other people being around, whether you opt to interact with them or not. I’ve no qualms with helping out if someone needs a skill point, vista, a rez, or anything like that. And, at times, some of the group events can be more interesting/exciting if there are more players around getting involved.

But I don’t have to engage in that if I don’t feel the desire to. I can just wander off on my merry way and go do whatever it is I feel like doing. Have no guildies, friend list is empty, and when I log on at night, not looking to truly change that. If I happened to run into people that were like those I gamed with once upon a time, that could certainly affect my solo-pursuits, but as it stands now, I just enjoy doing my own thing.

I think it was in one of the other posts about the coming updates that mentioned eventually all weapons would unlock for all chars (like engi with a hammer). And is something that would be truly awesome — I’ve seen more than a few posts about rangers and rifles, eles with swords, etc. Variety is the spice of life and all, so I’m all for opening up all weapons to everyone.

SOURCED:
“What’s more is that the team is also working very kitten finding a way to make it so that every profession has access to every weapon and their own weapon skills for those previously locked weapons. Engineer plus Hammer? Check.”

I actually loathe JPs myself as well, but in regards to obtaining the crafting node in the home instance and needing the 16 achievement points, it is possible with at least a minimal amount of JP interaction. I’ve got 15 of the 16, will have all 16 once I finish up with the charged crystals, and I’ve only done the Poor Man’s Kite, which def isn’t a jumping puzzle, and Kites of the Night, which involved only a single jump. For completionists, no, it’s not going to be possible to obtain ALL the APs without dealing with JPs, but if the only concern is the crafting node, JPs aren’t really hindering it.
