When the tweet came out there was a thread (use google to search, I just found this via “gw2 forums Chris Whiteside leaves”) and it is at

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Chris-Whiteside-to-leave-Arenanet/first

Ahh, thanks — didn’t think to use Google to search for it.

Chris Whiteside leaves Guild Wars 2

(Apologies in advance if this topic has already run its course – forum search engine and all) Saw this today and thought it of note and possible interest to those who might not have seen it:

Former Guild Wars 2 Director of Design Chris Whiteside has left ArenaNet to pursue other opportunities.

While on a long roadtrip, Whiteside tweeted the news to fans: “Yesterday I was super sad. Lonely, missing the team/community, family, and today you have all made me feel loved. Thanks so much.”

Whiteside said that he will be moving on to be a consultant for “other online worlds for the time being.” He first joined the company in 2011.

I don’t believe options are a bad thing in regards to having additional weapon skills to choose from, though I’d also be less inclined to see them tied to traits. As a couple of folks have mentioned, using the same skills for the same chars for the past 2.5 years (give or take a month or two) does get a bit stale.

The Case for a PvE Hard Mode

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

I think the issue with this is that it would require a fair devotion of time, resources, etc., to implement, for something that would only be “hard” for a finite amount of time. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread how the explorable paths of dungeons were originally meant to be the HM versions of the story paths, but now there’s folks speedrunning them, sometimes soloing them, with youtube “how to’s” walking you through the process. And it wouldn’t be long before HM zones were little more than cakewalks because the same thing would happen.

I played GW1 for years, but HM wasn’t much more than a faceroll with the proper build and you could pull that off PvX. With 7 heroway, Vanquishing or even HM dungeons (with a few exceptions) took time, not effort or skill.

So to ask the devs to commit to creating split versions of existing zones when the harder versions of them would only be hard for a month or two, rather than spending that same amount of time working on brand new content that could include elements of what was proposed in the OP … i’d be far more in favor of the latter.

I think it’s also worth noting that the wheel-crank on the front of the door doesn’t actually seem to serve any purpose either, as you think by turning it, it would open the door, but from the sideview of the door, there’s clearly no latching mechanism.

"Play How I Want" Is Gone

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

I think the issue is that both the title, “Play How I Want”, and the proposed revision to “Freedom Is Gone”, are both highly subjective. Personally, I don’t feel that any of the changes referenced in the OP have had an adverse affect on me or my play style. And the revisions to the Dailies/AP acquisition similarly have no effect on me or my play style.

Will I concede that that the previous version of dailies was obtainable without even focusing on it? Sure. Most days, the image and chest would pop up and I would blink a couple of times and think, “Oh, cool”. But I no more went out of my way then to tag 20 rats for Ambient Killer or make sure I was logging in on my necro so I could get Condition Applier just to get the daily then I would now to hop into a different zone to chop down trees while humming the Lumberjack Song from Monty Python because that’s not how I want to play.

How I want to play is still very much alive in the game. I understand that some of the changes over the past year have had a negative impact on other folks’ play styles, but some of the changes have also had a positive effect on people’s play styles. To generalize your own experience, or even the experience of a good percentage of folks, and state that the game cannot be played in the way anyone wants is a bit of a stretch.

I guess what confuses me is why the problem is isolated to GW2. Everything else was running perfectly fine — cable, phone, and every other website I went to, no issues. And I haven’t had any issue with it until this patch, so it confused me even more when I read through some of the comments saying they’ve had this problem with Comcast for the past few patches.

For me, it’s always been more about things my chars say … for example:

When stuck in a checkout line, there’s the desire to shout, “Urge to kill rising!”
After a few too many brews, a trip to the bathroom results in a hearty, “That feels good.”
Cruising down the highway yields a, “I could outrun a centaur.”
And, of course, stubbing a toe against a piece of furniture gets the, “My leg!”

[Suggestion] Event notification

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

Instead, I wonder if ANet can follow in the footsteps of gw2state.com and similar sites by creating a two-tier event overlay to go on the primary map.

  • First tier: toggle on the event overlay on or off (default).
  • Second tier: choose options for which events to display, for example:
    • Champion events.
    • Meta events.
    • Events active for more than 20 minutes.
    • Trait-unlocking events.

I suppose ANet could also add an option for display a list of upcoming timed events in the zone.

I think the overlay on the map screen with selectable options would provide everyone with enough freedom to display the info they wanted without creating a massive clutter for folks that prefer fewer things shown. It also doesn’t affect the main screen, so it’s not like you’d be in the midst of a battle and have a bunch of notifications pop up, blocking your view. As was stated, the more options the better, but that they should be options is most important of all.

I wouldn’t say mounts are against GW lore, except perhaps in the “traditional” sense of mounts … but some of my more favorite parts of GW1 were riding the Junundu across the Desolation or just wandering around the Charr Homelands on the back of a siege devourer … so there is precedent for mounted travel in GW. Owning a mount that you can use whenever, though, is a different matter altogether.

What is Marjory afraid of? [Spoilerish]

in Living World

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

While I’m all for character development, fleshing them out, providing backstories, etc., I would prefer they not begin spending any significant amount of time turning episodes into family melodramas … regardless of the reason Jory may have not wanted Kas around, it could be confined to a blurb or two of dialogue and left at that. Or for any of the other DE 2.0 peepz, for that matter. Otherwise we run the risk of this turning into a Lifetime series:

Jory’s mom flipping out that her daughter’s not only a lesbian, but is getting frisky with the upper-class when momma’s nothin’ but po’ white trailer trash, then it will be all about how Braham never got enough attention from Mom when he was a child and needs art-therapy to get through his abandonment issues, Rox, of course, just always wanted to “fit in” or something like that, but she wanted to be a dentist when all the other Charr were steady making toys, Taimi gets a Tiny Tim moment with a “God bless us everyone” before she succumbs to some horribly degenerative and terminal disease, and then last, but not least, it’s revealed that Kas isn’t really a lesbian at all — she’s under the impression Jory’s family has a fortune hidden away somewhere and is trying to figure out how to get her hands on it to restore her own family’s name, so she’s just been seducing Jory.

I know references to GW1 aren’t always relevant and/or appreciated, but Jora, Ogden, Vekk, Lydia — all of those chars had depth to them, without it becoming melodramatic, and was included in such a way that it didn’t truly intrude on the main story. Like the whole Vekk/Gadd bit (even if it was kinda Dr Jones Sr/Indiana Jones’ish) — it was incorporated within the overall story, but never became the story.

Hiding chest armour

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

If we can dye the underwear, then I’m down for this. As a medium armor wearer, it drives me absolutely insane there’s probably 2-3 available sets, at most, that show off any decent amount of the body. Pretty much everything else in that armor category covers up 95% of your character.

I feel extra screwed because I chose the starry arm/leg sleeve norn tatoos and there is literally no armor available that doesn’t cover the majority of the tattoo. I say, the more customization options, the better.

The tattoo I’m talking about is in the 2nd row, middle column: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/f/f3/Norn_female_tattoos.png

My engi has the same tatz and I’ve run into the same issue — love the look, but with medium armor, almost everything is hidden. Best I’ve found is using the Wolf leggings and the exotic duelist top.

Zerging is getting ridiculous

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

I don’t believe the content was released with the intention of it turning into another zerg-fest — I think that’s just how a good percentage of the player mentality has shifted. As Holy Whirlwind pointed out, there’s no requirement to join in on the zerg — you or you and a couple of other players can wander Kessex or the other zones this update has affected and still participate in the content.

The fact that this content has created another location for a zerg to me doesn’t mean anything more than those running with the zerg enjoy it.

I’m personally enjoying it as it adds even greater depth to combat … can’t just smack ’em down and run on by, as they could be getting rezzed behind you.

What would make it even better, though, is if they had the guy that did it for Mortal Kombat tell you to “Finish Them” …

"Finish Them!" in PVE -- no, please?

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

I personally found it a definite plus to this update and was pleasantly surprised the first time the “Finish Them” option popped up … I was like, “Oh yeah, in yo FACE”. And I was even more surprised to see the new and improved NC using downed skills on me, as well as new and improved Krait rushing over to rez ’em. It made the combat seem more intense.

That being said, though, I don’t think this should be rolled out to the majority of other areas of PvE as it could easily go the route of too much of a good thing. And for the mobs that have now been updated to have a downed state and the ability to be rezzed, I think it’s only fair that they can “Finish” the players as well. Shoot, give ’em their own finishers to use that are completely different.

Overall, a nice inclusion in this chapter of the LW, and I look forward to more updates that have similar changes introduced.

Will Anet

mojowalker.3798

Logan kind of reminds me of Will Riker. Therefore, I have a burning loathing for both of them.

Then Rytlock would have to be Worf …

On topic, I don’t see this as being feasible because, as many have mentioned, it would only further fragment the player base. We already see a disparity in the number of players between mid-level zones and the champ trains in Queensdale and FGS. If folks in those mid-level zones were then further separated by being in different phases where (and I’ve never witnessed it, so can’t testify to it) they may each be fighting battles with creatures that are invisible to the other players?

Having zones affected by a player’s progression could definitely be done if the zones were instances (Winds of Change Cantha vs. Pre-Winds of Change Cantha comes to mind), but with them being open world for any and all … I think it would be more of a detriment rather than a benefit.

Collaborative Development Topic- Living World

in CDI

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

Thanks again for providing us this opportunity to engage in open discussion about the game we all enjoy and would see become even better.

For Living World, I tend to think it comes down to 4 major issues:

(1) Replayability and/or revisitability (yes, those are now words). As several have mentioned, the pace of the LW installments and their subsequent removal either creates a sense of “better do it now before it’s too late” or, particularly for new players, “you weren’t here, so you just missed out”. I’ve seen it mentioned in several other threads that people who have missed different chapters would love to be afforded the chance to revisit the previous chapters for the story/lore, even if they weren’t able to complete to metas/obtain the shinies/etc. So even if it wasn’t possible for the content to be replayed several months later (ala GW1 Bonus Mission Packs), if it could be included within game as tomes in a library that woul;d allow players to still keep up with the story, many folks would be greatly appreciative.

(2) Additonal Depth — While each chapter may be moving towards a point that draws together all the separate pieces into a cohesive conclusion, from many of the threads that have been created there is a significant opinion of the LW not possessing any depth. NPCs seem shallow, villians seem weak, the player seems to be more of audience member than a participant — these are all points that have been brought up and, as someone else mentioned, the writing team is more than capable of addressing. I think over all, it would be that folks would prefer to be actively involved in something complex and perhaps even a bit twisted, rather than feeling as if they were parked on the couch watching a Saturday morning cartoon.

(3) Less Achievement/More Accomplishment — many have stated each chapter feels like a race to rack up achievement points, not only to increase their AP total, but to complete the X number of Y that will be reward them with Z. If the focus shifted more towards accomplishing a particular goal rather than amassing the required number of AP, players might feel a greater degree of satisfaction in the end result. And what I mean is that the LW chapter would not be bash x number of pinatas, or collect x number of dragon teeth, but have several “missions” that involve actually accomplishing something — take the clockwork invasions, for example … the LW chapter could have begun with them actively taking over portions of maps and the “missions” would involve coordinating and then initiating the effort to repel them, taking back the maps. And, at the end of the chapter, the invasion would be pushed back and the zones would return to how they had been before … to an extent, which brings me to the last point …

(4) Lasting Impact — very little changes in the world with the chapters that have been released. True, Southsun and Cragstead were added, Teq and TA were updated, the Tower of Nightmares could be permanent, but there doesn’t seem to be any impact to what the LW chapters present for the players to do — the new areas are added for the LW, not because of what the players have accomplished in the LW chapters. And the chapters don’t appear to impact the overall world itself. For example, there was an attempt made on the queen’s life … an impact of that would be an increase in the number of lionguard actively patrolling the Upper City and the Royal Palace, perhaps being more suspicious of “unsavory” looking individuals, maybe even stopping and asking the players who they are and what they’re doing. While nothing spectacular, it does demonstrate that something that happened during one of the LW chapters had an impact on the world.

So, those were my four contributions to the discussion and I honestly thank you for taking the time to hash these issues out with us.

Why Scarlet is amazing.

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

Playing devil’s advocate here … because, unfortunately, I’m one of those of the opinion that Scarlet could at any second say, “This town needs an enema!” And then blow a party horn.

Why dont they acknowledge her?

1. “Beigarth tried to dissuade her, eager to pass along the full slate of his smithing knowledge to such a unique and promising student, but she left him with a wave and a breezy smile. She didn’t need to be a master smith to forge the kinds of creations she envisioned.”

This, actually, seem to suggest even more that her name would have been mentioned if she was such a “unique promising student” to whom he would pass along the “full slate of his smithing knowledge”.

2. The gladium she studied under tried to kill her, when she decided to leave.
“declared her intent to continue her studies elsewhere, the charr veteran cursed her for a feckless cub and threatened to gut her with a rusty blade.

Here as well — there’s nothing to suggest her name wouldn’t have been mentioned, perhaps even moreso, as an example to everyone, as in “Are you going to dedicate yourself to your training, or act the feckless cub like that sylvari?”

3. She was practically considered a heretic for her theories by the Asura Collegiate, why would they even want to acknowledge her? “Unsupportable conjecture,” they called it. “Unsubstantiated claims that border on academic heresy, or at very least, criminality.”"

Heretics aren’t usually hushed up — they’re usually put to death in grand spectacle form, to serve as an example to anyone else who would even be toying with similar thoughts.

4. The Inquest practically banished her for breaking into the archives.

And here, like the Charr, would be an example type category — “Don’t you go poking your nose into places it doesn’t belong, like the archives. You saw what we did to that sylvari who made that mistake …”

I won’t go so far as to declare her a Villain Sue (tho I’m sure others certainly will), but to declare her amazing makes it sound as if she was Heath Ledger stepping into the Joker’s shoes and essentially redefining him as a villian. And yes, that was another Scarlet-Joker reference.

Guild Wars 2 Geared for Older Audience?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Alright so I guess a little back story on my part. I am 18 at the moment. I have been playing MMORPG games for a very long time. (since maybe 13 years old).

Not meaning to sound rude or contentious, but describing a 5 year history of online gaming as a very long time is a bit of a stretch …

That being said, I don’t know if the game itself is geared towards an older audience, or what elements are within it that would seem more geared towards an older audience. With the game rated “T”, it’s not as if any seriously mature themes could be brought into play, though I think it would certainly add some more “spice” to some of the characters/stories.

Acording to the manifesto

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

This seems to rear its head every couple of weeks or so … perhaps even more frequently … but I think what’s important to bear in mind is that a manifesto is, by definition, a “public declaration of intentions, opinions, objectives, or motives”. Not promises, oaths, pledges of allegiance, etc. They put forth their intentions for the game, their opinions of what they’d like to do with it, their objectives for various aspects of it, and/or their motives for doing so. I don’t believe anywhere is it stated that “we do hereby solemnly swear that ___________”.

I can appreciate and understand folks feeling there are aspects of the game that could be included, improved upon, or even removed, but for what was said in an interview prior to the game ever even hitting beta to be brought up as something akin to the ten commandants … it may be time, perhaps, to look ahead to see what constructive and collaborative feedback/discussions may have on turning this into a game that surpasses every expectation anyone ever had in the beginning.

top 5 things you want in Gw2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

5) The return of characters from GW1, like Shing Jea Sherman, or his descendant, which would go hand in hand with the need for more title diversity, and Nicholas, so we’d have someone to trade in the porous bones, broken lockpicks, and other junk for something like a Gift of the Traveler. There are others, but those are the first two that come to mind.

4) Armor/weapon unlock for all characters, meaning that all chars can access any/all armor. Since the weapons/armors are already in game, I would think it would be marginally easier to set this into motion than it would be to include new armor and weapons (though that would be nice too).

3) More town clothes/costumes/masks/etc., but the caveat to this would be the inclusion of an ACCOUNT-wide wardrobe (please no more soul-binding) AND the ability to wear said outfits wherever I may so please — even into battle.

2) All content to be scalable so that if no one I know happens to be online, I can still run a dungeon, try to clear an event, etc. I’m not suggesting things like Teq should scale to a single player, but there is room for a lot more content to be made available to smaller groups/soloers.

1) An increase to drop rates on things like rares/exos/precursors/T6 mats … some people enjoy farming, but agriculture ain’t my thing, and farming would still be an option for those who relish it. And the lack of desire to farm includes “farming for gold” to buy off the TP … would feel a lil more satisfying to, say, take down a giant and have it drop a couple T6 mats than it would to go out and kill “x” amount of “y” to sell “z” on the TP to get what could have dropped in the first place.

True … but in in a good number of the threads I’ve seen concerning town clothes, and the armor sets available on the TP, the issues are are that you can’t wear the town clothes as armor and they don’t appear in a wardrobe once bought so they can be applied to multiple chars multiple times.

While cargo shorts may be one of the few legging options available and don’t coordinate with much, I think even these would sell more frequently if once they were purchased they appeared in an account-wide wardrobe and you could add them over your armor.

But to your point about additional town clothing, I’m all for it … I like most of the costumes from GW1 and owned almost all of ’em.

Well, the problem of that is that you run into the issue of armor types. Do Guardians get to charge into battle wearing cargo shorts and hoodies? If so, why not allow heavy armor classes to just transmog light armor?

I just don’t see it working, personally. .

Actually, I’m a proponent of all armors being available to every class. The examples I’ve given of this before are what if I play a war who thinks he’s such a bad kitten that he doesn’t NEED armor and his big wonkin’ sword is enough? Or maybe I’m an ele that’s TERRIFIED of the idea of venturing into the great outdoors and want to hide inside a steel shell? Benefits/drawbacks could be worked into the mechanics of each. Obviously for a war to wear light-armor, he/she would lose a fair degree of toughness, but they’d also pick up faster endurance recharge. And vice-versa for the ele — more tougness in the steel shell, but maybe a detriment to precision because of the weight of the armor.

Anyway, back to point, I think there’s a TON of cash that could be made by gem store sales if there was a greater degree of flexibility for the items we can purchase.

I’d also say that it helps quite a bit to take your char and run through each race’s starter zones. After completing Queensdale/Wayfarer’s Hills/Metrica Province/Caledon Forest/Plains of Ashford, your char should at least be in the mid-20’s for level, if not higher.

But as loco mentioned, depending on what type of char you play, it can be rather squishy for awhile. I know I didn’t really begin to enjoy playing my mesmer until I up to like level 40/50ish.

I agree with you wholeheartedly in regards to finding and developing new and improved methods for promoting a more engaging, and ultimately fulfilling, educational environment and certainly didn’t mean to suggest that I saw no merit in those pursuits. I only meant to express a concern that the implementation of something like this could very easily become opening the lid of Pandora’s box. For example, there is a common misconception in many (not saying all, mind you, because I know for certain it is not the truth) parents’ eyes that the television/computer/tablet/phone, is an acceptable babysitter. Or that plopping a child down in front of one of those devices whilst the parent goes and does the same somewhere else in the house constitutes “quality-time”. I don’t mean to say that enjoying a movie together or playing a few rounds of Super Smash Bros together so they can beat the pants off of me isn’t quality-time spent together — it’s more the mindset of some that these devices provide an alternative to actually engaging with their own children. And my concern would be that such notions could very easily become more commonplace in a school environment as well.

As you mentioned, they are not currently being used for the express purpose of, “Here you are, boy/girl — here’s your PC, now go get your game on and I’ll check up on you at the end of the period”, and I find them being utilized as a tool an … interesting concept, given that they are then being asked to provide written observations, coordinate in groups, etc. And while I personally feel these same exercises could be conducted without the use of video games, or electronic media in general (you mentioned an example with conducting experiments with a catapult), I’m also cognizant of the fact that the inclusion of such devices, since they’re so prevalent in society as a whole, could be beneficial as well. On a similar note, I’ve argued that having children continue to learn how to handwrite as opposed to having them begin to learn how to type doesn’t make a lot of sense. And, as was mentioned, with the internet itself, in many ways it’s like having a library accessible at the touch of a few keys.

The concern I have is the extent to which it would begin to be utilized. If it remains a tool rather than a substitution, and students’ understanding of a subject rather than a regurgitation of facts/figures increases, then it will have been a successful undertaking. But if it becomes, “How was school today?” … “Oh, it was awesome! I played GW2 all friggin’ day because my teacher said I would learn basic economics!”
Then? … then we have a problem.

I think the other thing to take into consideration with the leaderboards (and point it out if I’m missing it) is that it displays when Teq was FIRST downed, but not when it was LAST downed … there was the flurry of activity during the first week the updated Teq went live as numerous servers struggled to be the first one to accomplish it, but within a couple of days of release, it was being done multiple times on multiple servers … but that was then and this is now … how often is Teq being taken down now, outside of specialized guilds organizing in overflow?

I can agree to an extent concerning LW content being a one-time only deal — especially when it has lasting impact on the world as a whole. Can’t really go back to before Southsun was in game — it’s in game now. Can’t really go back to the attack on the Queen’s Jubilee; it’s part of the game’s history now. These types of situations I can certainly agree that if you missed out on participating in them, unfortunately it’s just the way life works.

That said, however, for events that do not have some lasting impact on the world as a whole, where is the harm in them returning? I do not see any way the LW is affected if the Master Carver title was brought back this Halloween for folks to complete if they couldn’t last year, whatever the reason may be. Same for the title of Emissary of the Mad King (which, mind you, was only for completing 5 of the Halloween achievement categories) — why couldn’t that title be offered for completing Mad King related Halloween achievement categories this year? Those were the only two titles offered, and I honestly couldn’t say that I’ve seen dozens upon dozens of people displaying either title.

As for the Mad Memories back skin, as I suggested in a different thread, while it may not make sense to bring back the SAME scavenger hunt, couldn’t this Halloween have introduced one directly related to the Bloody Prince that either offered the exact same skin, or a re-colored one to provide the distinction between the two? Titles and skins — they’re just the fluff, the eye-candy … and as far as APs are concerned, for those that are saying that there’s no reason folks who weren’t playing last year should have the option to earn those APs … if you’ve been playing since last year, unless you go on sabbatical for the next couple two, three months, you should always have more APs than someone who just started playing this month .. they’ll never catch up, and if it’s a matter of prestige, then you can display your “Achiever” title … it’s Halloween … I say share the treats …

(Oh, and to clarify, I have both titles from last year as well as Mad Memories, so this isn’t a question of someone saying that everyone should be able to obtain them because I don’t have them.)

GW2: A Learning Tool (Wall Street Journal)

mojowalker.3798

Coming from someone who has two children in grade schools that do not currently utilize video games as learning tools, I have to admit I would find the inclusion of any video game to be slightly … disturbing. Don’t get me wrong — I’m all for creating and developing ways for their education to be more engaging, but to me, this is the first step in a concerning direction. Imagine, if you will, the kindergarten teacher who thinks that, since the children in the class find it to be entertaining/engaging, they should be permitted to watch Sesame Street? After all, it “teaches” the alphabet, problem-solving situations, shapes, colors, etc. … which, to an extent, many might find to be acceptable, so long as it was a learning tool as opposed to a curriculum substitution … and that, I think, is where the danger lies.

How heavily are such methods utilized/relied upon because the kids find it to be more engaging/entertaining? At one point does the teacher him/herself become nothing more than someone who can push the “On” button on the PC/TV set in front of the kids? And, perhaps most importantly of all, while learning will be much more productive if the kids are engaged in what they’re doing, is that what professional life is like? I don’t find my interests/desires catered to when I walk into the office in the morning — I have a position, responsibilities, decisions to make — all of which I am expected to perform because it’s my job. Should children be taught through their formative years that their education (which in many ways amounts to their profession) is something that has to be fun and exciting in order for them to feel the necessity to complete the tasks at hand (homework, tests, research papers, etc.).

As I said before — I’m all for new and innovative ways for education to be “upgraded” to remain relevant to emerging technologies and the like, and I enjoy video games just as much as my boys do … but I enjoy them in the evening, once my RL responsibilities have been taken care of and I have some time to unwind and relax. And I think there may be other methods by which it could be approached rather than allowing “Angry Birds” to play a role in physics lessons …

Confused about Halloweapon Recipes

in Blood and Madness

Posted by: mojowalker.3798

mojowalker.3798

That is my understanding of it as well … so, for example, for the Crossing, first you have to craft the recipe for the Gift of Souls (40 bottles wine, 10 candy corn cob, 10 dust, 10 refined nougat), then you have to craft the actual gift itself (gift of knowledge, 250 ori ingots, 20 ectos and 100 crystal lodestones) and then you have to craft the weapon itself (gift of souls, eldritch scroll, 100 mystic coins, and 20 superior sigils of the night). So, to sum up:

  • 40 bottles of Elonian wine (approx 10 gp)
  • 10,000 candy corn (approx 69 gp)
  • 10,000 nougat (approx 200 gp)
  • 10 crystalline dust (approx 1.4 gp)
  • 500 knowledge crystals
  • 250 ori ingots (approx 25 gp)
  • 20 ectos (approx 6.2 gp)
  • 100 crystal lodestones (approx 59 gp)
  • eldritch scroll
  • 100 mystic coins
  • 20 superior sigils/night (approx 32 gp)

So, all told, around 392 gp …

If I’m right, but based of the paper trail on wiki, this seems to be the means to obtain the Crossing via crafting …

I think the main issue with the untapped potential may have to do with sales figures, and I’m just guessing, so don’t quote me or ask for quotes … based off a lot of comments in various threads from folks who said they wouldn’t drop a dime on additional town clothes since you can’t wear them over your armor (ala GW1), I’m going to assume that many of the clothing options available go unsold. That, in turn, could demonstrate a lack of interest in them as a whole, hence a lack of further development of other clothing options. This would, obviously, be the wrong conclusion to draw from the lackluster sales, but I could see it being a contributing factor.

Personally, for myself, I’d buy multiple sets of different outfits if they weren’t restricted to town use only.

1) Living Story — multiple posts are out there, not only concerning the frequency with the updates, but the contents of the updates, ranging from thoughts on the quality of the story/lore, the actual mechanics of the various instances/missions included, to the number of achievements that must be completed in a finite amount of time to obtain the shinies.
2) Ascended Gear — while personally its inclusion in the game doesn’t phase me one way or the other, given the number of threads on this topic, it is definitely controversial and bears further discussion/review. With the cat out of the bag, so to speak, I don’t believe it could be removed from the game completely, nor do I think that’s necessary, but further discourse on how it could be obtained would assuredly be welcomed.
3) RNG — with each LS update, holiday, festival, etc., has come the quest for new shinies, whether they be backpacks, weapon skins, minis, helmets … but the backlash over those items being locked completely behind RNG chests/random drops/based off of mats from random drops (Halloween recipes) has, at times, reached near deafening levels on the forums. Coupled with many of the items being account bound has left many folks without an option to obtain them at all, since they’re luck is either atrocious or they refuse to spend gold/gems on getting the chests in the first place. How the new shinies that become available in-game is definitely something that could be looked at, as well the drop rates for different mats, rares, exos, percursors, etc.

This was posted by a dev in a different thread about the Bloody Prince’s outfit:

“It’s hard to tell what the functionality of the item is from just a screen shot, so I’m here to clarify. This screen shot actually shows the Bloody Prince Thorn costume and not an armor skin, so it is not usable in combat.”

So many are assuming that at least HIS costume will make an appearance in the gem store at some point … as for a return of the mad king/witch outfits, it’s all speculation, but since other aspects from last year did not return this year, I think it’s definitely worth keeping expectations at a minimum so any potential disappointment would also be at a minimum.

I also think part of the reason they were implemented last year was for a way for people to use up the tons of candy corn they’d accumulated from the candy corn nodes, t or t bags, etc. But, given the amount of candy corn needed for the mini, the pail, and the recipes, I don’t see there being much of a possibility of players wandering around with mad stacks of candy corn and nothing to do with them …

mojowalker.3798

It’s changed in GW1 now, since no new content is being developed/released. Now, if I understand it correctly, you get a token you can use to get any of the previous festival hat/masks.

But to the issue of the book back scavenger hunt returning (and this is speaking as someone who has the book, the Master Carver title and the Emissary of the Mad King title), while from a LW sense it might not seem plausible to bring it back, since it previously had to do with the Mad King and this year’s Halloween is more about the Bloody Prince, I see no reason the scavenger hunt couldn’t be updated to be about more current lore and still offer the same skin — or even a re-colored same skin. That way folks who obtained it last year would have the option of getting it for alts they may have created since last Halloween and folks who didn’t have the chance to obtain it last year can still receive it. I’ve had it on my necro ever since last Halloween, and honestly, I don’t feel like it makes me any different than anyone else, nor would I feel slighted if I saw someone who’d only started playing this month wandering around with it as a back item next month. The same goes for the titles — I rarely pay attention to other folks’ titles, so seeing people with either Master Carver or Emissary of the Mad King who didn’t obtain it last year wouldn’t phase me one bit. And honestly, I’m not sure why it would bother anyone who does have those if folks who didn’t were given the option to get them again this Halloween.
