(Human Street Rat) Personal Story: Breaking Blade (Death, death, more death)
Posted by: mrsrachelm.7618
Level 11 Elementalist, down-leveled to level 10 for the quest.
Fully crafted level 10 armor and weapons.Dead 7 times in a row to Doc Howler in the bar.
Don’t know how to give constructive criticism on this without swearing. Something is not right here.
You are sooo not alone. I like challenge but some things are just ridiculous. When certain classes need to be several levels higher than the storyline quest just to get the traits etc to survive (hopefully) and then the rewards are already out-leveled too…something is definitely wrong.
I LOVE the open group idea and hope it doesn’t get screwed around with.
Make our characters smart enough to auto-attack when idle...

My answer to the OP is….noooooooo. If you’re going to be away from your comp then put your toon in a safe place or log out. We have enough problems with botting without making it that much easier to do. Seriously, that is just a recipe for auto-leveling without actually playing the toon yourself.
Champions are not hard to kill solo at all, it only takes time. People need to realize that they may need to learn to play better. If it was going to be made a change to the champions is to lower their HP, not damage, not toughness, no mechanics, only the HP.
I am 95% positive that I can defeat about ANY champion out there, except the Eye of Zaitan in Orr.
Case in point from my above comment. Hardly helpful tot he Op and merely a “aren’t I just the bestest ever!” comment. Yeah yeah…here’s a cookie….we all fall at your feet in adoration for downing a boss solo. Happy?
What they said… ^^^
I’d be quite irritated if I didn’t have the option to mail gold to my wife/children (or vice-versa) as we play together!
Exactly. A lot of people don’t realize that families actually -do- play games like this together and parents of younger kids actually use the mail system to help their kids out.
Although I totally understand the OP’s position especially in lower to mid level zones which are somewhat more deserted now, I don’t think nerfing them or scaling them based on how many are fighting them is the right way of dealing with it. Are they on a timer? Do they just stay around until someone kills them or do they go poof after 30 minutes or whatever? If they just stay there then, yeah, that’s annoying especially for those that spawn where your NPC’s and quest givers/merchants are killing them all. It can also be disheartening when you’re relatively alone on a zone ..a newer player coming later to the game perhaps…and have zero recourse to downing that champion or getting the rewards for doing so. I understand -that- as well. Wish I had a good answer where everyone is served. Having high level players brag about how they can do it so all you need is to learn to play and get skillz is hardly helpful and reeks of “I want attention for my uberness”. Seeing that all the time on the forums is annoying at best.
The potential for abuse of -this- specific report function is HUGE! I can just see them having all their time being taken up with following up on stupid reports by people with an agenda or a hate on for another player…especially in PvP. No a good idea, imo.
As long as they give us a toggle in our settings to auto decline duels without even seeing them in our chat. I hate constantly getting the duel challenges.
But no, we definitely do NOT need to do what every game had done and go the route of the holy trinity.
I don’t mind raid content as long as they don’t end up doing what WoW did which was concentrate ONLY on raid oriented content for end game making zones so kitten difficult to do anything in UNLESS you were a part of a hard core raid guild or a geared-to-the-nth-degree group. If they do that, I’m done. WoW did that and that’s when they lost me as a customer after several years of dedicated play. As long as raid content is made available instanced while non-raid oriented end game content is made available for us casual players….I think that’s a great idea. As soon as end game content revolves nearly entirely around raiding and PvP…with little to nothing for questing etc for casuals…I’m gone.
The dungeons do seem a bit overpowered for the level they claim to be for and the sheer number of mobs which can’t be pulled in small numbers – they all come together at once- is ridiculous. Example: CM SM…OMFGawd! My group were all well over the level of the dungeon with the extra traits etc, were a well rounded group with obviously skilled players….but it was , as the OP stated…one huge cluster F with wipe outs galore due to the sheer numbers and over-and-above the difficulty for the level of the dungeon. I’m not asking for a cake walk because that would be boring as all heck but seriously, some tweaking needs to be done to make the difficulty level of these dungeons match the stated level they are supposed to be.
It’s very easy to block a gold spammer even though you have to do so after reporting them. No biggie.
"
Another thing that makes me chuckle, is the fact that if enough people want something the company responsible for the product should take notice!
Good example McDonald’s: people said hey your food is making our kids fat….enough people complained and now we have the “healthy kids meals”. If nobody said anything the kids meal would still be the same (that is to say you can still order the fat version) but they gave the option, because people wanted it. Same goes for this company they will listen to us if we are speak as one voice.
The problem with your example is that is wasn’t the food or McDonald’s fault…PEOPLE who FED their kid that food made them fat and now everyone else who didn’t complain are stuck having 4 fries and some old preservative laden apple slices in their kids’ meals because grown ups lacked the ability to NOT buy it if they didn’t like it. DUH!
So, no….your example is ridiculous.
Now, as far as mounts in game in general…the cons outweigh the pros in my opinion. Every time people have mounts they block bank tellers, mail boxes, NPC’s etc…sometimes on purpose just to be kittens and other times because they are too self absorbed to think of anyone else and can;t be troubled to dismount. There are more problems that are already a part of the game which need to be addressed and fixed FIRST rather then worry about putting mounts in the game because someone’s kitten is stroked because he can sit on some rare mount in the middle of the city square for all to admire. The addition of mounts also makes for just that much more graphics issues for those who do not have high end computers and thereby has the potential to alienate an entire customer base.
I understand the desire for an RP server simply for players coming to the game to know where to look if they want to find other RP’rs. But frankly (and I have been a active RP’r in other games) I have found RP in general to have lost it’s appeal and RP servers are like a large red cape to a bull for those who just love to be kittens to RP’rs. The devs can barely keep up with the real problems that need to be addressed in the game without adding a bunch of whining from Rp’rs when others are bothering them etc.
The only reason I don’t play a Charr, is because their male don’t have proper feline looking heads like the female do.
Most male Charr heads look more canine than feline. As for Asura, I just dislike them, I just like Sylvari, Humans and Norn so much more
I’d make a Tengu if they become available.
Same for Kodan.
I would SO love it if they put Tengu in the game! That would be kick kitten awesome! But please, NO frog people.
I have always thought the massively over sized weapons that seem to be oh-so-popular in games are horrid. It’s like every game simply -has- to go anime. BLECH!
I am finding the economy and TP in this game very hard to fathom and deal with. I simply just don’t get it with the buy orders, the sell orders, the timing, how to actually see what’s what without sitting there with calculator in hand etc. At the risk of getting my head handed to me…I found the visual aspect of the Auction House in WoW very user friendly and easy to understand. I am not talking about the economy of the two games right now…only the way the buying/selling UI operated. I liked the time limits, I liked being able to easily see the range of what people were selling for as it could be set up by name and from highest to lowest and you could just click on the one you wanted. The TP in this game seems convoluted and difficult to manage. While I certainly understand that some people are having no problem with it, many of us are obviously by the sheer number of topics and threads with complaints and confusion as to how this works indicate.
I would very much like to see a major revamp of the TP UI to make it MUCH more user friendly and understandable.
Slapping band aids on the symptoms (like being able to mail gold in game etc) doesn’t actually address or solve the root of the problem. Until the foundation of the issue itself is taken care of, no amount of treating the symptoms will do anything but make legit players more limited in game play. Just my opinion. I recognize that others’ mileage may vary.
Thanks for the input guys. I suppose I’m just so used to a non-FIFO system and different style of in-game selling/buying from other games which don’t employ this method that I need to just readjust the way I look at this. I’m used to gold being the be all end all of survival in game in order to have good gear, weapons, etc. Plus the trading gold for gems…and gems being needed for things like storage expansion etc…adds to the pressure to make some serious coin faster than I seem to be able to do so atm. Storage is especially a serious problem and, unlike others, I don’t have a large disposable RL income to throw at buying gems willy nilly. Really appreciate the suggestions and input, everyone.
There are so many portals everywhere that mounts are simply not necessary and just don’t “fit” in this game well, imo. It’s not like the zone are soooo huge either.
Lets make the game a bit more fun and a pain for the botters..

I can easily see a large guild deciding that an x-member or rival guild needs to be taught a lesson or some such and getting them flagged as a botter. Newp, don’t like the idea at all. I like the desire behind it, which is to deal with the botters but that’s definitely not the way.
It is pretty nice. I’ve always wanted the armor worn by Lady Anise, the Queens guard in Divinity’s Reach.
That would be nice but a lot depends on the price associated with the gems too. The expense of the gems can make those two slots horribad expensive all thins considered. But then, I’m not one of those players that has a lot of liquid real life cash to be throwing at an online game. [sad sigh] :P
I guess I just don’t understand the TP in this game. Call me a newb or whatever if you must but after that please answer the following points and/or questions too, lol:
1) It appears as though people are selling mats, drops and many crafted items, especially those in the lower levels to upper mid-range levels for little more than 1c above vendor sale price so my question is…what’s the point? It’s not like they’ll make -any- money on it. Why don’t they just outright vendor it?
2) How, in the name of Gawd, do I actually make any money in this game if I can’t do so by selling mats, crafted items (blues and occasional greens), drops (blues and the occasional greens) etc during the low to upper mid-range levels without using real life money to buy gems and flip them for in game cash?
3) How do I know -what- to even attempt to sell and how much to ask for it and still make a little profit? Keeping in mind, I play the game to…play the game content…not stand at the TP for hours on end playing the market.
4) Does the FIFO system mean that Joe Schmo can come in -after- me and sell the exact same thing as me for the same amount as me and sell theirs first simply because their listed sale is “newer” than mine or the other way around? And if so, then why is anyone even bothering to undercut anyone because it wouldn’t mean squat anyway since the sale is all based on who is first or last in?
5) Does it get better at end game or will I be forced to farm dungeons to make money. I hate farming dungeons over and over ad nausea. It gets hella boring.
Again, call me “newb” or “blonde” etc but then help me out by explaining the above and even adding some constructive suggestions. :P Thanks in advance.
I know I’m late to the party but wanted to say thank you for this thread topic. I’ve gotten some very useful information here from you and others as I’ve restarted my thief from scratch after having some real difficulty in the mid levels with combining damage with survivability for PvE. while I -can- PvP pretty well, I simply don’t enjoy it and most build discussions are PvP or WvW focused.
I’ve been watching the TP for a while now and frankly, I’m unimpressed. New players think they’ll at least make a little bit of money by farming mats to sell and so on. Forget about it. Looking on the TP you’ll see most things being listed 1 whole copper above vendor cost which is taken by the TP so you’re left with exactly what you would have gotten had you just gone to an NPC vendor and sold them outright. Same for all but the most high end player manufactured gear too.
Maybe I’m just not “getting it” which is entirely possible, lol, but exactly what is the point of the TP under current conditions as mentioned above? How did this happen? In other games, new players can sell raw mats and so on for a small profit, as well as those items they make themselves…even those games which have been around a while and whose markets are flooded. I’m just not understanding what the heck happened to the TP to make it so incredibly useless to anyone but the most high end users.
I am not an economist by any means so will someone explain this to me? Maybe I’m just not understanding what I’m looking at when I’m looking at the TP window, which is also entirely possible. It all seems a little convoluted to me so I could just be very very confused.

I don’t think people understand that this is a F2P game which means they have to make their money somehow. They do that by encouraging players to use real money to purchase things like gems, etc. It is usually much quicker and easier than farming the gold in game and, as they say “time is money” so not everyone in the process of leveling has the amount of in game gold to buy gems which are needed for extended bank storage, bag space, etc. If the game doesn’t make money from players somehow, then the game goes off line.
I have fraud protection on my account that pretty much holds any online purchases in limbo so I simply had to call them and tell them it was a legit purchase and whoa-la. It can be a pain but I’d much rather have the added safety of people not being able to buy things with my money even if they -do- have my info because they won’t have my private pin number needed to give my account permission to accept an online purchase.
Disagree. You are treating a symptom rather than the disease.

Most of you have been VERY helpful. To those who just wanted to slam me with snark…go kitten yourself. I was very frustrated likely because I have always played thief a certain way in game up until this one and I was darned good at it (PvE and PvP) thank-you-very-much, lol. But for some reason, I’m just having this big issue and I think it’s because in other games I could rely on stealth much more than I can in this game because stealth has no real longevity. I was really unbalanced by the nerf because it was a bread-n-butter build I had been using and I felt like I had the rug yanked out from beneath me when they nerfed it.
I REALLY appreciate all the helpful and non-judgmental suggestions very much and am going to start again from scratch (since my current thief is totally storage space now, lol) and learn from the bottom up at how to play this class and not being able to rely so much on long amounts of stealthing times so heavily as I had in other games. After years of playing that way, it’s been a hard learning curve for me to change this play style and I think, after much introspection, that is my problem.
So…I do NOT want a glass cannon build and I’m looking for a PvE build to level from the beginning. Suggestions on what traits, specials, weapon combos to concentrate on for PvE leveling purposes for a hardy build still capable of getting the job done of killing the mobs at a decent pace a lower to mid levels? I ask because most builds being discussed on various forums etc concentrate on PvP and are all by high levels or level 80’s which I’m obviously not going to be for quite some time.
Again, I so appreciate all the motivation and help you guys are giving.

I’ve tried everything. Researched other’s builds, took suggestions from other thief players, went over the builds with a fine toothed comb…but I really loathe being a class cannon on this particular class. I’ve played thief/rogue classes since my very first MMO ever way back in the EverQuest days and I know how to play them. They’ve always been my fav class…until this game. I don’t PvP. I can, I just don’t like it. In PvE, it seems this class is way waaaay too squishy for a leather wearer. My clothies have more survivability even in close combat. They nerfed one of the bread-n-butter abilities I used in PvE (likely because of QQ by PvP’rs) and lowered the survivability of an already squishy class even lower. In short, they sucked the fun out of the thief class in this game. No -real- stealth of any duration. No sneaky sneaky. Every time I steal, I auto combat. Even with short bow the main auto shot is one designed to pull multiple mobs…which, of course, the thief is too squishy to actually handle well. The DPS output in comparison to other DPS classes is pathetic. No, I’m not level 80 but I’m far enough along to have given this class a darned good try and it’s been frustration after frustration. When I want to play my rogue/thief class, I’ll do so on Rift. My poor little thief is now extra storage space. Maybe, if they decide to make the class stealthy, survivable and with actual DPS that doesn’t require a math major to discover how to make it work, I bring her out again. It’s a sad sad day.

I always love it when a Warrior or Guardian class says “well, it was easy for me, I solo’d mine. You just need to learn strategy or how to play your toon”. [sarcasm] Obviously, if so many people on non-tank-like toons are having problems…a problem likely exists.
Thanks for the input. I’m totally frustrated at this point. I’ll see if I can work things out that I can stomach this class. It’s always been one of my favs…until now.
I agree with the OP. The storyline quests are ridiculously difficult in relation to their -alleged- level. While this is an MMO, no one likes to be forced to beg for a partner of group to help them do a few minute storyline quest and the older the game becomes, the harder it will be for newer player to find someone. A lot of adults who play (and pump in some real money, I might add) don’t have the kind of schedules that lend themselves to the time needed to beg for groups/partners etc and then, maybe if they’re lucky and get one, play a two minute storyline. The storyline quests -should- be entirely soloable at the level they are given. They should also NOT be forced into a full grouped dungeon to do them or get stuck not being able to finish the very thing that helps make the player feel more immersed in their place in the game.

It’s totally ridiculous how difficult the storyline quests in general are in relation to the level they -claim- to be. And I ow how to play my toon just fine, thanks. Thief is a glass canon to begin with with almost no chance of surviving any “endurance fight” where the mobs just keep coming or are more than two. It’s a real “fun” killer in this game how difficult what should be “soloable” is and not everyone wants to to nor wants to be forced to group for everything. Sometimes you just want to log in and play, chat with folks while doing so, etc and not have to stand around -begging- for a group or partner.
I have to say I found the personal story quests to be VERY difficult to the point of not being able to do some of them unless I was at least 10 levels higher than the quest in order to have more points in traits etc. That’s just plain wrong, imo. The difficulty should match the level it’s for and a player shouldn’t be expected to have the best of the best gear at all times either because it’s unrealistic to be able to have that type of gear at all times unless you have a higher level toon who is feeding that gear to your lower ones. They seriously need to adjust the difficulty level and it would be nice if I wasn’t -forced- to group up and do a dungeon just to advance in my personal story line.
nosleepdemon: If you want challenging, level a Mesmer and try those storyline quests solo that you did on your warrior, ROFLOL.
I rarely get to see a martial combat styled class in MMO’s. I love them. The fist weapons, staves, kicks and twirls, etc. I’m not talking about a “healer class” . I’m talking about another type of combat style in addition to the others already in the game.

+1 for any change that provides access to all content to solo players. I’ve heard many folks give the response “this is an MMO” and “join a group or do something else” and they probably have a point, but I just wanted to express the opinion that not everyone enjoys playing the game the same way. Some people either enjoy the solo game more, or don’t have long chunks of time to stay in a group during a dungeon/mission without needing to be AFK for a while. In GW1 I still haven’t been through Urgoz or the Deep since my H/H team is limited to 8 and I prefer not to PUG. I’m hoping my preferred playstyle won’t prevent me from experiencing dungeon content in GW2.
Agreed!
I agree with the OP. They fact that the game is new means getting groups for the story lines (mid level especially) is easier but that’s going to change real soon. The fact that I might not even be able to -do- my personal story quests because I am forced to find groups is aggravating enough but to not be able to complete my map and get the achievement as well is just nauseating. I loathe being forced to do a dungeon etc just for that stuff. The fact that I have to be several levels higher than my storyline quests to begin with just to hopefully survive them is pretty irritating as well because I enjoy storylines as part of the game in general. Challenging is good but really…when I have to be over 10 levels higher than my storyline quest so I can have the traits etc to survive it….that’s just stupid. The difficulty should match the actual level don’t ya think?
I’ve tried all the weapon combos. What would you suggest for mid level PvE play? I don’t seem to see much difference in the bottom line DPS and definitely not in survivability even with mobs that are a level lower than mine. I’ve -never- had so much difficulty with a class in this game (admittedly I haven’t tried Mesmer yet, lol) and I’ve played rogues classes very successfully in other MMO’s (not just WoW).
The DPS leaves much to be desired. I don’t PvP so this is only based on PvE. The thief is a glass canon who has been denied any real use of typical thief/rogue abilities like extended stealth (we get a few seconds only), good DPS, and/ or at least more survivability than they currently have. If I get more than one or two mobs on me at a time (even a level lower then me) it’s all I can do not to die and most likely will…again and again and again. Sucks the fun out of playing the class and the coin from my coffers for constant repairs. Seriously disappointed and will be even more so if they keep nerfing this class based solely on the boo-hoo-hoo’g of PvP’rs. Not everyone PvP’s nor uses that as their main source of game play.
I’m really disappointed at how squishy the thief class is in PvE. I have cloth wearing toons that survive better even in close combat. Just to even -try- to survive I have to place all my trait pints in toughness and it doesn’t make a huge difference at least at mid levels so far. I’m seriously considering not playing a thief any longer because there is no survivability if I get more than one mob on me and really, that happens all the time in this game, which is fine if I had any ability to remotely handle it without dying every other time. It’s really taken the enjoyment out of the class for me. And no actual stealth more than a few seconds? Really? The DPS seems to have been nerfed or just isn’t what one would expect from a dagger wielding specialist. I’ve tried all the weapon combos etc and have great gear for my level but doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of difference. Seriously, they need to make this class more survivable either health wise or DPS increase wise.
That’s it…that’s my question. Is the Gem Store currently operational? Is it borked? Are all CC purchases blocked for some reason? I know it’s not my CC company because I called them to make sure. All I want to do is buy a few gems. WTF? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Holy crap! $600 on gems?!! Dang, wish I had that kind of disposable income.
Anyway, I too am being blocked from buying gems (first purchase and only $50, lol). I made sure it wasn’t being blocked by my CC company first and still couldn’t complete the transaction. Not a happy camper. Went to support form to submit help request and got a notice that the gem store was down for maintenance and figure that’s the issue. Do we have any info at all that this is actually the case since I do not get a “down for maintenance” message on the gem purchasing page – which, I would think I should if this is indeed true.
