To be perfectly serious for a moment, I’m almost certain that player to player trading opening up room for scamming was not why ANet prevented trading. They want everything to flow through the TP so that they can tightly monitor and control the economy. Doing it for “the good of the players” was just a neat excuse. Plenty of other games allow player to player trading afterall.

I used to main a Warrior everywhere I went, and got to know it quite well. The Rev doesn’t have quite the CC potential, but for some reason I’ve been drawn to it. I feel like the skill cap is a tad higher in all content, but the play style is also very interesting. It took a looong time to get to the point where asking questions about the class felt like a worthwhile thing to do – one can read guides until they are blue in the face, but if you don’t have the faintest clue of what you are even aiming for, you are still going to get wrecked. I’ve finally started actually winning fights 1v1 with just my berserker’s gear without buffs, so I figured I’d start asking around for tips and tricks, since I reckon the time investment to build an ascended set with pvp infusions would now be worth it. I’m leaning toward Marauders for sure, lots of fights I lose tend to be close, so I don’t think I need to reinvent the wheel with a hybrid play style. I just need a bit more survivability, and to remember that 4 sigil combo

Cheers folks!

Collect at least 100 Dragon Chests and open them all in a row, you are almost guaranteed to get Tequatl’s Hoard.

Is the random generator working differently if you open 100 chests in a row compared to opening one each day for 100 days?

Even then, it’s possible that the hoard is already in the first chest and you slay Tequatl another 99 times on 99 days to open it.

No it doesn’t, it’s just a ritual that people who don’t understand the whims of RNG perform.

The visual clutter could easily be solved by simply downgrading the appearance of player shops; most people have graphics cards nowadays able to handle orders of magnitude more than Guild Wars 2 throws at them. In fact, the main reasons for slow down in the game isn’t even due to the graphics load, it’s the network traffic and hard disk streaming that’s the real culprit.

Scams and the like can be mitigated but certainly not stopped, that’s just the reality of commerce just like in real life.

Finding items is part of the charm, and part of the whole point.

nosleepdemon.1368

The Trading Post has always left a bad taste in my mouth in terms of simulating a player run economy. Just like with any Auction House implementation, it destroys a crucial part of the concept of supply and demand, in that global supply becomes the only kind of supply. In reality, this is obviously not the case, and if it were, the world would come crashing down faster than a North Korean rocket.

Enter The Merchant; a player run subsidiary of the Black Lion Trading Post, the Merchant allows players to set up player run shops anywhere in Tyria, bringing a supply of goods to weary travellers and armies that need them. The Merchant is able to set up a shop, that persists as a static NPC, from which players can purchase goods. Naturally, some cut of that profit goes toward maintaining the Merchant’s trading license.

The Merchant’s skills would revolve around improving their shop, for example, being able to stock more or rarer item types, reducing the Black Lion trading license fee, or increasing their inventory space. At high level, the Merchant would gain access to crafting bonuses, and might even be able to sign their crafted insignias, armour or weapons with a “created by” tag.

Naturally, this will tread on some toes: ANet sell increased inventory space for example, and with improved crafting bonuses the Merchant would be a must-have class for all players. Player shops would also increase server load, and persisting across the merge cycles of mega servers would be difficult.

Ah great, those are helpful tips. You are right – I hadn’t considered being able to proc every swap sigil.

I was indeed planning a marauder roam spec, and it’s interesting that you mention you use hammer in a zerg, but seemingly not whilst roaming. I use hammer even when roaming (backed up by sword and shield) but that might be because I run straight berserker right now, and find that the hammer hits much harder than people expect it to. Zerker also has terrible survivability, so I find myself on the defensive very quickly in melee. If I can knock a third of someone’s life off by the time the fight goes to close range, they can’t just win a war of defensive skill attrition since my burst is just as likely to down them as theirs is to down me, once we run out of endurance.

I assume you roam with sword/shield and staff? How do you prevent being at a disadvantage at range? How do you open a fight / bring it to melee? Furthermore, although I know that surge of the mists is absolutely mental, I can almost never land it. Do you have any tips for decent staff usage?

Assuming I was going to make a roaming build, would Rune of Surging be a good choice? I heard somewhere that it activates from just beginning upkeep on Glint 4, not sure if that’s accurate or if it has been changed.

I’ve also come in to possession of half a set of ascended armour via boxes, but they are only defensive stats. Would Celestial be a workable choice of stats, or is that a complete waste of time?

Um, there’s no screenshot.

One thing to check is to see if you have any bags minimized.

Good luck.

I mentioned being able to repeatedly attempt to craft the item.

If my bags were full, the attempt wouldn’t be possible. If the attempt succeeded, I wouldn’t be able to do it again as I’d be out of materials.

Initially I thought that perhaps the items were not being created as the open bag slots were in invisible bags, but this is not the case.

I just tried to craft Pristine Mist Essence, and it would not appear in my inventory. The crafting bar would fill up, and then nothing would happen. I had space for it in a non-invisible bag.

I then went and picked up 65 stabilizing matrices from the Trading Post, to try and craft a cube of stabilized dark energy, and the same thing happened – the crafting bar would appear and complete, but no item.

The attached screenshot is the crafting bar, but no item lands in my inventory. I can keep attempting to craft, but nothing happens.

Am I missing something obvious here?

I find fractals to make a fairly decent amount, although I’ll be kitten ed if I can ever get anything to drop from them that isn’t the Red Ring of Death.

The back-piece for WvW I find to be extraordinarily hideous. It’s far too large for a start, it appears to completely and totally overpower any other armour effect, and to make matters worse the precursor / lower tier versions look obviously incomplete. Were I going for it, I wouldn’t even bother to use the other skins, unlike Ad-Infinitum’s precursor / lower tier skins, or even the spinal blade skins, which mostly look alright.

The Rev is, or at least was, a PITA to level. You really need the Herald spec to do anything decent with it, unless you have some decent armour / trinkets from the very beginning. It’s great fun to play mind, but the time investment may be daunting.

On the other hand, you can pretty much mash your face on the keyboard with the Warrior and you’ll eventually combo something useful. The Warrior is hugely customizable, as it doesn’t use “kits” for the utility bar like some of the other classes (The Revenant’s “kits” would be its legends, for example). You can also equip every weapon in the game except the crap ones, which you wouldn’t want to bother with anyway.

The Guardian is indeed slow, much like its playerbase in fact.

Tl;dr: Go Warrior and have a blast, unless you are a masochist (Revenant) or wonder if life is like a box of chocolates (Guardian).

Can anyone make melee range combat work?

nosleepdemon.1368

Oh one other thing. If you are fighting against more than one opponent, especially if it’s a group fight where you don’t have focus, you can always just go down and rally off of a low hp mob by killing them in your downed state. It’s risky, but I’ve survived plenty a dungeon wipe by killing some low hp, inconsequential mob shortly after going down. Just make sure you have a heal skill ready for when you get back up.

Can anyone make melee range combat work?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

nosleepdemon.1368

Some encounters really are difficult as melee, especially elite or champion monsters, whose damage is very punishing. However most high damage attacks have wind up animations, or tells, which you can watch for and react to. Again, if you are solo this is only going to help until you run out of defensive skills and endurance.

I’m not familiar with Mesmers, but in general you may want to learn a particular skill rotation that emphasises control and damage avoidance, whilst dealing at least moderate damage to your opponent.

For example, I main a Revenant, and my skill rotation switches between weapons and legends in an almost rythmic pattern. My two melee weapon sets both have evasive and blocking skills, and one of my heals converts all incoming damage to health. Revenants also vomit boons, and I can configure my dragon stance to give me protection (33% damage reduction) and regeneration at the cost of dealing less damage while I reposition.

The tl;dr of it is, look at your class and weapon set, and make some more defensive choices. Finally and most importantly: don’t panic! It’s easy to blow all of your defensive cooldowns in one go to avoid moderate attacks. But you need to know what skills you truly need to avoid, since unless you are kiting, you will take damage. The trick is to not take so much that you die

Me: “…And that’s why I think it would be a bad idea.”
The Wife: “You would marry someone other than me??”
Me: “…What?”
The Wife: “Why would you marry someone else?
Me: “…I’m lost? I didn’t say I would?”
The Wife: “You just said you would marry someone in guildie wars for a bonus!”

I remember playing the game quite vividly at low level. For some reason, it was a lot more enjoyable in beta, probably because of the impermanence of everything. It felt like an achievement to discover a new map, because in a few hours, everything would be reset.

The 40 zone was definitely difficult to get through, and I don’t think your partner’s experience is unique. ANet did try to improve the new player experience of the years, but as you said with the hearts – there is precious little there in the way of story.

Your enjoyment of the game hinges, story wise, on the personal story. Unfortunately if I recall, that does begin to taper off inspite of a strong start, and doesn’t really pick up again until the attempted attack on Lion’s Arch around level 50.

I would encourage you both to give the game another shot, perhaps in a different game mode. I would also really suggest just wondering around Tyria. I remember that the most fun I had in this game was trying to go to places I wasn’t supposed to, or discovering jumping puzzles and mini-dungeons.

Efficient Way To Craft Marauder's Armour

I was looking at the crafting prices. 70g or so for one piece, that’s a tad steep. I think I will improve my AR to get into 75-100 fractals (just two more +9 AR infusions will do the trick) and hope for a couple of pieces to drop, and see how my gold and ascended material intake improves. Speaking of AR infusions, what’s the use for the super high level ones? It seems to me you don’t need to go higher than +9, and if you do it’s because you lack an infusion slot, which is still cheaper to purchase than to get a high infusion level.

I’m looking at building some WvW armour for my Rev, and Marauder’s seems like a safe bet.

My question is: Is it still more efficient to craft a cheap set of ascended armour and then transmute the stats to Marauder’s, or is it better to craft it directly? Or, could it be even better to purchase it from a Fractal or WvW vendor?

By efficiency, I’m referring to time spent accruing gold/marks and/or materials.

I got them too and as far as i can tell there is no appearance change. I waited for the the transition between day and night and nothing on the gloves changed. I have tried it with both the original dyes and dyes that i have picked and still nothing. I thought that the dye channel that is used for the luminescent runes was going to change color depending on the time of day . But there is no change. Is the appearance change something else ??

2nd picture is in AC , no difference.

I can only suspect that it’s a very slight darkening of the ghostly smoke aura. I honestly can’t think of anything else that it might be. The trouble is that just general day light seems to hide the effect – you would expect it to be naturally less noticeable in sun light. Maybe it’s a bug?

I’m more curious than disappointed; they do look good with the glow and how the wrappings hang off the character’s arms. I’d say they are a nice alternative to the Chaos Gloves, but if it’s eye stabbing neon you’re looking for, the Chaos Gloves do give more bang for one’s buck.

I assumed that maybe the gloves began to glow blue like Foefire, or that the effect somehow became stronger but I don’t think I’m seeing any difference. It must be subtle. Wvw didn’t used to award a whole lot of anything, so if anything, it would be better to be happy for everyones better rewards than jealous of top tier players. Had something similar on Black Gate last night. Some tosser of a commander was tagged up, and when asked about a squad, people were told it was private.

Now if you want to run a private squad, that’s your perogative, but don’t go tagging up and then refusing entry to your special group of snowflakes. Especially since a lot of those players gravitating to the tag could have been doing something more interesting than following the same tired path of “capture everything where the enemy isn’t”.

I’m putting some practice in so that I will be able to command moderately well, so that if some self important bell end does that again, I’ll be able to group up people that want to play the game without referring to some kind of egotistical, self serving “pro pvp” guild.
