Seriously this is so bloody frustrating.

No, it could be BETTER! When you are ABOUT to kill it, and then when it’s at 1% health you DISCONNECT, and when you get back the game sends you to a DIFFERENT megaserver!

Do people here REMEMBER the Ancient Karka mess? When people fought HOURS to kill it, only to disconnect and return to a DIFFERENT overflow?

Well, ANCIENT KARKA says “hello again! Prepare to waste your time!”

Oooh I remember the Karka debacle quite well, being one of the poor fools who got disconnected when ArenaNet quietly announced “a new build is available, your client will restart… NOW”

SECONDS away from taking down Teq for the FIRST TIME since this lamentable mega newbie system has been put in place, and what does the game do? It frigging crashes!

Why for the love of God is do we not get credit for events that we have contributed to when the client decides to go mental? The game keeps track of event contribution when a player moves out of range of it, so why not for a short period after logoff?

Seriously this is so bloody frustrating.

Many ragequits were seen from this problem. I just stopped doing mega-bosses entirely because I would crash like 2 seconds before we killed the boss. EVERY friggin time.

I just don’t see why the game doesn’t keep track of event contribution for a minute or so after you DC. Something like, if you would have gotten a gold rating for the event, then give the player a bloody grace period when they time out. When you’re doing network related stuff, handling disconnections and resyncing clients is like top priority.

Still it could be worse – Mechwarrior Online doesn’t even allow players to rejoin a match once they disconnect…

Perhaps ANet could create a gem store item to keep ahold of contributions for a set period of time. 20 gems gets you 5 seconds worth of contribution saving, 40 gets you 20, and maybe 500 gets you 30 seconds? 5 minute buff duration sounds reasonable right? … I think I might be onto something, better delete this thread!

Wouldn’t matter, once you DC and reconnect 9.9 out ot 10 you’re put in a totally different instance and that is where the trouble is.

Yeah that totally shouldn’t happen either. Your character should be locked to an instance for a period of time after a disconnect that was not initiated by you, again it’s just common game design sense :/

Come on Arena Net, I’m throwing a bone for you here – you could make money off of paranoid gamers buying these things off the gem store. You could even do a hardware scan to check how old their HDDs are. “It looks like your hard drive might fail during this event wink wink. Here’s a contribution keeper buff on us! Next one’s 500 gems though!”.

Fractal Reward Track

Actually I used to PvP a lot, mainly with my Thief in sPvP and Warrior in WvW. It doesn’t matter what you think regarding skill in any of the game modes, Fractals are end game content with a defined gear progression that would be side stepped by simply showing up to sPvP matches and getting a pat on the back.

Gear progression in fractal is just for fractal’s sake.

Nobody here asked to handing out fractal rewards easy, we have just asked for a reward track which gives a little bit of fractal rewards and a chance for fractal skins. NB: A CHANCE.

It happened with dungeons which are also endgame content, I don’t see why it shouldn’t happen for fractals too.

Dungeons aren’t end game content, they’ve been entirely trivialised and can be run by just about anyone, fractals are the end game content (such as it is).

One would not expect to receive the dragon finisher from running fractals, if you want the finisher, do PvP. Similarly, if you want fractal items, do fractals. sPvP got some much needed love and incentive for playing it in the last patch, but no game mode should be able to give you the ultimate items the others have to offer.

No it’s terrible and you should immediately stop downloading it (if you started). Everything about the game is pants and nobody has ever enjoyed playing it. The threads you see of other people discussing the game and its intricacies are merely figments of the ArenaNet forum server’s imagination.

Should you decide (against all good advice) to continue on your endeavour to find out “is this game good”, you might find some videos on youtube of people actually playing it, and threads in various forums on this site actually discussing it, which could help you form an opinion.

I’m a big fan of sword in MH, which seems to lend itself to condition specs. Beyond that I’m as in the dark as you are, having also been away from GW2 for a long time. I used to play dual sword + long bow in sPvP which stacked up condition damage quickly, but I’ve since switched to sword + warhorn and long bow for condition removal and group vigor buff. In honesty I’ve yet to find a build with the warhorn that I like in PvP, and my stats in PvE + WvW are all over the place – the prevailing trend is condition, precision and toughness on armour + weapons and condition damage, power and vitality on accessories. Would be good to figure out how best to build my stats for a condition damage build :/

TBH they ought to make an exception with legendaries so that you can’t reskin them or apply their skins to anything else. The developers might have even taken that into consideration, but perhaps their new system doesn’t allow it. Legendaries should now and always feel truly legendary, and equipping them on your level 2 alt sure as heck diminishes that.

I got the bow precursor after the Karka event debacle in the consolation prize box mailed out to players who were on the final fight when ANet pulled the plug. I chucked it onto the TP and swapped it for a Zap plus a few gold to make up the difference. I’m thoroughly enjoying GW2 now and slowly ambling my way toward Bolt at my own pace, comfortable in the knowledge that as long as the servers don’t vanish, I can take my time exploring the world. I’m currently about half way there on Karma and haven’t even begun to look at the other materials needed, since my priority is getting 100% exploration first.

To be honest I hope they get some uniquely skinned legendaries that set them apart from the regularly earned PvE ones.

I remember in WoW back when carrying Grand Marshal’s weapons simply commanded respect, both for the owner’s undeniable skill and complete lack of life outside of constantly running Battlegrounds. I was always far more impressed to run into a Grand Marshal in PvP than the countless PvE scrubs with raid boss drops – because gear check don’t stand in goop is soooo hard.

These guys getting their legendaries will have fought every other player to get them, there’s a hard limit to how many will be given out for the tourny and that demands a LOT more than just legendary skins imo.

I’ve only just rejoined the game a few days ago, so beating up that Scarlet lady and then watching the blonde (drunk/nervous?) girl get into her friend in what was probably the most wooden kissing animation I’ve ever seen was marvellously amusing. I’ve seen it three times now and it simply does not get old. They ought to add a little sliver of spit in there by random chance as well just to spice things up.

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: nosleepdemon.1368

nosleepdemon.1368

It would be nice for them to repeat the event. On the other hand, it may well go just as poorly a second time around. The real issue here is the sense of unfairness of handing out precursors and a 20 slot bag as possible rewards for participation.

I just checked out an expansion to a certain other MMO I used to play, they just added player housing that you can actually build. I only have time for one MMO, so once I start playing it sadly GW2 will fall by the wayside.

More things to reflect upon later.

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: nosleepdemon.1368

nosleepdemon.1368

The level design was also atrocious around the Ancient Karka event. An area that contains a large battle should never, EVER be filled with dozens of objects players can get stuck on. I found myself repeatedly getting stuck on scenery on the ground which got me caught several times inside AoE death zones. Luckily my warrior has several skills to prevent damage so I didn’t go down, but scores of people around me were not so fortunate.

The thing is, I’m an amateur level designer myself and there are many, many tutorials on the net about level design dating back from the mid-nineties that discuss the issue of geometric complexity vs action and manueverability, these are seriously mistakes a professional should not make.

Disconnected at the final phase! [Merged]

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: nosleepdemon.1368

nosleepdemon.1368

Last night I and thousands of other players were in the final phase of the Ancient Karka event when ArenaNet abruptly patched the game, giving players 3 minutes to finish the fight before being booted. As soon as I saw the announcement I reasoned that if I dc’d right now and logged back in with the update my group would still be in the overflow and I’d be able to rejoin. At that point, I’d also allow my group to rejoin me, thus we’d still be in the fight.

When I restarted the client I noticed that there was in fact, no patch. Uh oh.

Surely enough, when I logged back in and rejoined the overflow there were dozens of other players wondering what had happened.

ArenaNet had killed the event.

Now I have to wonder, why? They must have known there were players still trying to complete the event, yet they gave no more than a 3 minute notice, ruining hours of rather difficult fighting due to the poor level design and server performance.

As you all know, ArenaNet added a not insubstantial chance for the Ancient Karka event chest to drop precursors. I am now wondering if ArenaNet purposefully killed the event due to some kind of exploit related to the chest, or if the number of precursor drops had reached some internal limit and they had no graceful way to stop more drops without killing the event.

I would voice my true opinion of ArenaNet’s handling of this but it would get the thread killed, so I’m just going to say that I’ve never seen such a poorly handled MMO event in my experience as a gamer. I have spent most of this morning brooding over whether or not to continue playing this game or to move on to something else. I understand that this game is free to play, and from a time vs money perspective I’ve certainly got a good return on investment. However in terms of time wasted and, I hate to say, animosity toward The Power my experience has been an emotional roller-coaster.

The question to me is no longer about whether it’s worth it to play this game, but whether I’m prepared to be burned again by the Next Big Thing that I feel compelled to participate in due to the Gem Store model being a direct link between in game currency and real world money. I have unwillingly linked the value of in game items, and therefore participation in events (especially those with ridiculous rewards like this one) to real money. I find this to be an incredibly insidious marketing device that only adds uneasiness to this whole sordid affair.

In conclusion I, and probably thousands of other players, would like an explanation as to why the event was killed in this manner. Although sadly I doubt such an explanation will be forthcoming, what little good faith I do still have in ArenaNet (and a significant desire for closure) has compelled me to write this.

"Garry's Mod" For Guild Wars 2

in Suggestions

Posted by: nosleepdemon.1368

nosleepdemon.1368

If you’ve not heard of Garry’s Mod, it’s basically a sandbox mod for Half-Life 2 that lets you spawn objects and enemies out of thin air and construct cool machines or challenges for other players.

I was thinking that with GW2’s touted horizontal progression, and with their gem store, wouldn’t it be cool if they created something like that for GW2? Here’s some thoughts:

1) You buy objects and space to design your stuff from the gem shop
2) You can submit your creations or areas to your friends / guildies / whoever to try out
3) ANet selects the x coolest ones a month that are challenges with win/loss conditions and adds them to the monthly achievement
4) A new guild perks tree to give you bonuses for your designs
5) Player housing would be an obvious and simple extension of this idea

From a developer perspective it’s probably monstrously difficult, but if there’s one thing that players have shown time and again here and in other games – we can be incredibly creative!

Go condition damage and spam blossom if you want to get blown up in short order, or play a Thief the way they were meant to be played at that level and put a pistol into your offhand.

The trick is to always have your melee targets blinded by using pistol skill 5. As long as the mobs stay in the blind AoE (they do at low level) they’ll literally never be able to hit you. I’ve had more than a few surprised remarks from other players after my Thief has tanked a group of mobs, I guess they expected me to spin about like a kitten and then go stealth or die.

Pick a shortbow as your second weapon and you’ll be able to kite champions too using dodge roll and skill 3 to avoid attacks.

I should also point out that the existence of this thread probably didn’t affect ArenaNet’s decision to fix the skill, as they probably put the patch into internal testing long before this particular discussion started. It’s far more likely that all the other players that brought up the bug / filed tickets are responsible for bringing the exploit to their attention.
