Totally agree OP, it’s absolutely fantastic. Finally, I have to co-operate with other players again to get things done instead of being able to simply face roll content. I’ve seen a lot of frankly ridiculous arguments on the forum that MMO doesn’t mean that a player should have to actually interact with anyone else to progress. I find this to be utterly incomprehensible – you are playing a multiplayer game, by definition, you should have to interact with and work with others. It seems to me that the “youtube generation” of players have gotten the definition and basic gameplay tropes of MMORPGs mixed up – an MMORPG isn’t a solo experience, if you want that, go play Diablo 3 or something!

I welcome the greater difficulty – both in terms of the game’s antagonists and in its mastery system requiring you to play to unlock new areas. I feel like everything I do in the game actually has some sort of tangible consequence now, whether it’s toward defending a zone from night time attack or toward improving my character’s abilities so that I can progress further.

I can’t wait to get back into the game this evening, to the point where I might actually forego the DIY work I promised my wife I’d get done… OK, maybe I don’t want to go that far.

This is so *kittening cool*!

I decided to get the expansion after-all, and I’m not disappointed. I had some hero points to unlock part of the Berserker, managed to flip an old monocle I had for the welding torch so my warrior looked presentable, and off I went! The story and pacing are excellent, the fights are reasonably challenging (finally!) and the complexity of the maps is just right.

I’m super glad to actually be able to work toward my Berserker spec while I play, instead of having it all handed to me immediately and being done with it. Speaking of Berserker, I thought it would be rubbish in honesty, but it’s actually superb. Being able to deliver ranged piercing damage on my sword is absolutely quality and the tweak to the longbow finisher works brilliantly when fighting large groups of advancing mobs where you can’t wait for them to all be within the circle before opening fire.

Anyway, thanks for delivering ladies and gents, it has been worth the wait and your hard work shows!

I used to have mates who played the game with me, but Arena Nets game design (specifically the in-your-face micro-transactions) made them all leave for greener pastures, like Final Fantasy. It’s OK though, I’m sure I’ll be able to figure something out, I reckon I’m going to start by typing “/map”…

“Never preorder” – Confucius

Words of wisdom.

Remember when “preorder” meant “pay 5 of {insert local currency here} to secure a copy and possibly some goodies on release day”?

I held out on buying HOT because I wasn’t sure if it was going to be good. Oddly enough, it seems like my cup of tea as I enjoy challenging content and the idea that skills are actually earned instead of handed to you on a platter. Lucky for me. But why, kitten storm after crowd funded / pre-purchased kitten storm, do gamers still pay for their games in full before they’re even bloody well finished? Mind boggling!

This isnt how i imagined it would be.

I have to respectfully 100% disagree. The elite specs are not more powerful, better suited, or designed more effectively than the normal specs. Someone with an elite spec does not have an advantage over any player without it. Anet has said this numerous times, elite specs are simply a new way to play your class. By that logic, they should not cost more than a normal trait tree.

I’m not going to necessarily argue that they should only cost 65 points to unlock entirely, but 400? That doesn’t seem absurd? Let’s say it takes about 20 hours to unlock the entire elite spec. I have 11 characters. I’m expected to play each character for 20 hours, just to play the way I want to? For 220 hours total, I am expected to grind? Explain to me how that seems right, in a game that is marketed as ‘grind free’.

I imagine Arena Net’s justification is that they want players to play the game, instead of getting all the toys right at the very beginning. It seems to me that the Elite specializations are the equivalent of a traditional MMO’s leveling requirement to the new cap, with the caveat that you can also spend your experience on other aspects of the game should you so choose. As for the 220 hours of grind, that’s eleven characters you’ve got there, you’ve more or less generated the grind for yourself by setting the requirement that all of those characters need their specializations unlocked. For example, for me the grind would be 40 hours, since I have two main characters and the rest are just mules.

What Anet assumed was they could stretch what little they had out to make it look like a fully fledged Expansion. Locking and time gating a bunch of stuff to make it feel like it was more than it was.

This was my concern and why I’ve not bought the game. I’m still trying to get a grasp on how much new content there actually is. The length of time to acquire it isn’t bothersome if there’s plenty of it and it’s fun to play. I shall have to hop on and actually see the zone sizes before making the ultimate choice, $50 is not cheap afterall!

The whole journey thing is a load of crap. If I want a cake, the fun isn’t in making the cake. It is in eating the cake.

I beg to differ. For example, if my wife is baking the cake and wearing her pretty little apron, the fun is definitely to be had in sufficient quantities both during and after the baking.

Also and on a more serious note, there is immense gratification to be had in being able to bake a multi-layered cake without the whole fecking thing falling apart at some point. One certainly gains an appreciation for one’s local bake-shop after such an experience.

I think it’s fair to say the majority of GW2 players have not had sufficient life experience to arrive to this conclusion, and honestly, I don’t imagine it will make any difference to read it without seeing it first-hand… but let me try to explain how it is that I never find myself up in arms about anything regarding this game. (Not anymore, that is.)

If I am not mistaken, ArenaNet has made it fairly clear what their objective is in producing this game, and it can be summed up nicely in this quote that I recall seeing more than once from various members of the team:

“It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey.”

Aside from being a profound nugget of wisdom, this approach is evident in the expansion content. It will take more than a few hours to do much of anything, and that’s the bloody point, because when you do finally achieve whatever it is you’re working toward, it’s still nothing more than bits on a server. You don’t get a sensory or monetary reward, or even so much as a pat on the back here in the real world. So why are you doing it?

Think of it this way: when the day finally comes that you stop playing this game, who is going to give a flying kitten how many legendary weapons you had? Or if you unlocked all the elite specs? Or got whatever particular thing you have your sights set on? The obvious answer is literally nobody. You aren’t playing because it gets you anything in real life. You aren’t playing because you’re trying to make a fortune and send your future grandchildren to college. You’re playing because it’s a kitten game, and that’s what games are for.

So, at the end of the day, the whole purpose of it all is purely diversion. And that is what you have been given. You may take it or leave it, for as long as you wish, however it suits you and your own personal circumstances in life. You may even find it simply isn’t worth your time or money to play this game, and if that’s the case, well, you shouldn’t be playing.

All of you who have taken it upon yourselves to cry outrage over the amount of time it takes to do X, Y, or Z, all that amounts to is petty signaling. You just want to show you have principles that you refuse to lapse. But that means nothing. The reality is that I have chosen to be satisfied by this game, with all its ups and downs, because the only thing I seek from it is to be entertained, and for as long as I am entertained, I will continue to enjoy it.

I urge any of you who are unsatisfied with the game to consider this perspective. It has rid me of the self-imposed burden of being upset about nothing, and I’m sure it can do the same for you.

Insufficient life experience to appreciate a fantasy world? Get a grip please.

He has hit the nail on the head actually. If it’s difficult to grasp the parallel he is drawing don’t worry. It shall come in time :P

I’ve been following the development of the expansion for some time, having decided not to buy into any of the pre-purchase hype as that’s not the sort of business model I wish to support. However now that the expansion has been released, I’ve been weighing the possibility of giving it a go. Naturally, I came to the forums to see what the general consensus was about the expansion.

Now that I’ve wiped the puke from my keyboard, allow me to make a couple of observations.

It is apparent that Arena Net have (as usual) gotten a little ahead of themselves with the way they have designed the game. They appear to have erroneously made the assumption that what most players of Guild Wars 2 wanted was an actual game. You know? Something with stuff to do that cannot merely be unlocked by staring at it, or by throwing Dads (or Mums!) plastic at the screen.

For some reason, it seems players were expecting to gain access to everything immediately, including Elite specializations which are… well, they’re Elite. I’m not sure what was to be expected from something that by definition, exudes exclusivity. Yes, some things need to be earned.

It seems likely that there is a vocal minority of players complaining on the boards (all with thousands of hours clocked on their characters, and thousands more to come), I imagine that those happy with the game are currently playing it, or making excuses to skip date night to play it, or sleeping because they played it for too long. However for those folk who are up in arms about having to actually play the game to progress I have a question to ask:

It’s a game… So… What did you expect?

[Right then, I’ll get the marshmallows, someone else bring the sticks.]

It is not a disaster just because you are too cheap to afford an expansion. The fact of the matter is, Arena net seems genereous when you compared to other companies.

Also, if you are not going to buy the expansion why bother run dungeons? Those things are never going to be improved and it makes everything pointless.

I’ve been eagerly reading this forum, as I’m unable to play the beta event, and still on the wall about buying the expansion. However, for what it’s worth and from someone who played the vanilla beta and enjoyed Orr before it was nerfed: please don’t drop the difficulty! I can honestly say that throughout the few years that I’ve played this game, no moment has come close to when I first set foot upon the Straights of Devastation. More than in any other MMO, Orr felt to me like an end game zone, a ‘this is it!’ do or die scenario where every move and foray had to be planned, and was fraught with danger. If Maguuma can deliver this same sense of dread, awe and challenge, I shall have no qualms about purchasing Heart of Thorns. Cheers, and have a good beta weekend!

That’s a bit extreme but there are people who do that just to be jerks, usually because they’ve been informed they’ve been blocked or reported. Probably can’t be proved but could be solved by an optional de-render.

I think walking away, relogging to different map or just not looking at them is much easier and cheaper to implement than creating whole system of hiding players.

Clearly, it’s easier to be offended and demand that the public at large bow to your particular requirements as a person who cannot grasp the concept that not everyone in the world is going to be simply lovely toward you.

I believe the rifle doesn’t even have its trifling range advantage over the longbow anymore either. It’s a good ranged weapon in theory, but if you are going for a ranged option there are really few reasons to take the Rifle compared to the LB.

Is rifle viable?

in Warrior

Posted by: nosleepdemon.1368

nosleepdemon.1368

It’s a bit situational, and certainly does not offer the same utility as the Longbow, chiefly:

Blastable AoE finisher
Untraited root
Blind

The finisher can be blasted by other Longbow skills as well.

The rifle offers:

Vulnerability
Crippling
Single target (piercing if traited) burst finisher

I’m personally using the rifle with a sword/axe combo and switch to it when I have to roll out of melee range or have a full adrenaline bar to blast something in the face with. I throw vulnerability on the target, then use skill three and the finisher then leap back in with my sword to continue hitting.

Don’t listen to the OP. I AM the silent majority. Here is my story:

As someone who played in the betas, and got into Orr before it was nerfed, and spent much time on and off casually working toward my Bolt (got it a few months ago, finally! Yes it took that long) I feel that the content in this game has been getting steadily easier. With the exception of Fractals, the only thing that actually gave me any sense of accomplishment was taking down Tequatl with seconds to spare, because he was actually hard. Then he got so easy that people were burning through his Mega Laser phases back to back. This was wrong and had to be fixed. Additionally, I would like to make a few points:

Firstly, it is not true that “casual gamers” (I would consider myself one, since I occasionally play GW2 for maybe an hour at a time) want easier content. It isn’t, please stop spreading this ridiculous myth.

Secondly, despite not being part of a big guild, I fully support the idea of different tiers of content the upper echelons of which I will not be able to access. OMG WHY U NO WANT TO PLAY ALL CONTENT?! Well, because I understand that I am not the only player this game caters for. There are hardcore players who live and breathe this game, and they will want content that caters for them.

Seriously, it’s a couple of bosses. This is not vanilla World Of Warcraft where 5% got to access the best dungeon and gear. Get over yourself OP, let the hardcore players have their fun because God knows there’s enough content for you and me elsewhere in this game.

Let’s not start a witch hunt for theirs.

One of the saddest things I’ve seen in any large multiplayer game is the effect that Garrisons had on World Of Warcraft. So many maps simply became ghost towns and remaining players never stuck around for long. GW2 is similar in some regards – it’s too easy to find groups in LFG, so you don’t need to shop for players in major hubs or God forbid, the zone itself.

Some of my fondest moments in any game were in vanilla WoW, exploring the horde zones (I was alliance) and just happening upon other players, usually hostile. In fact, that’s how the first guild I was in got started – I met a Paladin who was also out exploring and we teamed up, then we met a Warrior, slew horde for hours before some 50s wiped us out (level 45 was high back then!) and with the help of some randoms, formed our guild right there.

This kind of adventure is simply absent from games these days, everything is too easy, too simple and without any sort of effort required to put into effect other than grabbing a few guildies or meeting an arbitrary gear check and punching a “find me some plebs” button.

With respect, kitten that!

If ArenaNet want to make GW2 more social, and have players interact with each other more then that is absolutely fantastic. If that is indeed what they accomplish, and I can actually have a flipping adventure again where anything can happen, I will gladly drop money for the expansion.

Sorry OP, toughen up buddy.

Completely unable to settle for anything resembling normality, or even accepting one another’s differences as just another facet of mother nature, the citizens of Tyria paraded themselves in front of all and sundry yelling “look at me! Loook at meee! I’m special! You must pay attention to me!”. Meanwhile, moderate and sensible voices who were themselves as unique and special as the megaphones announcing their morale superiority sighed, as society collapsed beneath the vast and incalculable weight of its own narcissism.

But by all means, let’s have more token characters to show off and more importantly, talk about to prove that we are at worst as Louis CK would say, “only mildly racist”.

Had you not posted about how useless this addition would be, I might have taken you more seriously. But since we have balloons, brooms, mini pets, mail carriers and finishers in the game, I’d like you to explain how are those not useless in the grand scheme of things. Or, alternatively, just how vital they are because, considering the dev time and resources that went into those, they must be important. Because they wouldn’t waste precious dev time and resources on something trivial, right?

Good point. I now support this proposal, as long as it is done via implementation of a “Personalized Crafting License”, 1600 gems each. As long as the developers are paid for their time so they can keep folks on staff and spend more time focusing on things beyond trivial non-additions, I am fine with the little stuff.

I’d like to add my support to this feature, but mostly because I have a soft spot for it in other WoW.

When burning crusade came out and I got my druid to level 70, the guild founder (I’ll call him “W”) sent me a hammer he crafted, of course with the “made by W” inscription, he was one of the nicests guys I’ve known and was always sending things to other people like that. I soon upgraded to a better one but couldn’t really get myself to destroy it, so I stashed it on the bank. Several months later, W died from a heart attack (he was 60 years old at the time)…. until I stopped playing WoW few years later (during WotLK), the hammer was still on my bank, still with the “Made by W” sign on it.

I really couldn’t care less about things made by random people on the TP… but I’ve always had a soft spot about having it on things made by friends.

This is precisely one of the reasons I support this idea – it’s really great to have items crafted by your friends, even if you don’t use them anymore. I still have the iron anchor I used on my Warrior from the LA jumping puzzle, I used to love hammers and that thing was a beast!

If the feature cost some amount of gems or gold to enable on any item (“gifted by…”), then perhaps the extra development time and data cost could be recouped by Arena Net. I imagine this would be quite the money maker at Christmas or other such gift giving holidays around the world!

It is truly a sad state of affairs when a suggestion is met with little more than negativity because it might take sand away from someone elses sandbox. Don’t worry folks, I am sure there is plenty of sand to go around!

Sand isn’t free, and neither are development hours.

Opposing an idea as a player because it would take some amount of development time isn’t a valid reason to oppose it:

  • The amount of time it takes to develop the feature isn’t known by the players, it’s known by the developers.
  • The developers decide what features to implement based upon some combination of input, including player feedback, however…
  • …If you as a player prefer feature x over y, then you should voice your support for feature x, and ignore feature y. This allows reasoned discussion about both features to take place where constructive feedback (e.g. how would crafter data be stored, how would inappropriate names be handled etc) is given that would hopefully improve the feature, or discuss how it could be implemented in some other way more conducive to time constraints or how niche the feature is.

For what it’s worth, this is coming from someone who frequently has to tell people with fanciful ideas that there may not be time to implement them. Usually the “spirit” of the idea is taken on-board instead, and we arrive at a compromise that satisfies both parties – the developer who has a strictly limited amount of time, and the designer who wanted flying mechanized space kittens 2 weeks after the project hit feature freeze.

It would be nice to know how particular items came into the world, and to be able to tag items as gifts when sending them to players. E.g. “Crafted by …” or “This was a gift from …” This would probably introduce some nasty data overhead if the information isn’t already contained somewhere and is hidden, but it’s a thought nonetheless.

A friend of mine who played Ragnarok Online had a smith called “Someone Else”, so all of the weapons he sold to other players were prefixed with “Someone Else’s …”. Which was pretty funny :P

That feature is totally unnecessary not to mention impractical to implement. There are far more important things ANET can spend time and resources on.

Yes, thanks. This is one more thing I forgot to mention. As he says, the feature is completely pointless and unnecessary for the game. How would it possibly benefit the game for everyone? Don’t worry, I won’t hold my breath expecting a sound reason, because there is none. And no “Because that other game does it” is NEVER a good enough reason.

It is truly a sad state of affairs when a suggestion is met with little more than negativity because it might take sand away from someone elses sandbox. Don’t worry folks, I am sure there is plenty of sand to go around!

Suggestion: Allow Item Gifting

I imagine the biggest reason is data related, since as people have pointed out “but players might abuse it” isn’t a good enough reason not to – players will abuse just about anything and there are already systems in place to prevent the creation of inappropriate names.

The post and its title have been edited to reflect feedback, thanks!

As has been pointed out, Arena Net would need to recoup the development cost of such a niche feature as originally detailed (see bottom of post).

I propose allowing players to purchase the right to add a “gifted by…” tag to an item they have crafted or received from a drop for a nominal gem cost. The item could be something along the lines of a gift box, within which the named item would be contained. I expect this feature to be popular during gifting seasons such as Christmas, and would be a nice way to send a little something to your friends in game.

Original Post

It would be nice to know how particular items came into the world, and to be able to tag items as gifts when sending them to players. E.g. “Crafted by …” or “This was a gift from …” This would probably introduce some nasty data overhead if the information isn’t already contained somewhere and is hidden, but it’s a thought nonetheless.

A friend of mine who played Ragnarok Online had a smith called “Someone Else”, so all of the weapons he sold to other players were prefixed with “Someone Else’s …”. Which was pretty funny :P

Why tell him to bog off? Wouldn’t it have been more productive to say “if you want that point of interest, help us take it”? People get so wound up these days!

Someone called you out for “Been There, Done That”? Forgive me for probably misunderstanding what happened, could you explain it a little more?

I rejoined after a year and the game has been vomitting exotics and rares on me, I had 4 named exotics in the last two days which has been quite exciting. I guess whatever random number seed that had been decided for my account that gave me bad RNG rolls got reset or something, I’m raking in the gold now! OP maybe you could put in a ticket for ANet to reset your seed, it might help!

Guild Wars 2 is a #safespace, full of people who think that others engaging in a duel will somehow affect them, or that the feature of dueling will automatically make people more aggressive and hostile (and thus somehow pull into question their manliness / womanliness? I don’t know!). Apparently the concept of being able to auto-refuse duels escapes many players.

We must get these nasty thought of competitive play out of our heads! They are doubleplusungood! Keep these thoughts to the prescribed areas where smokers and gymbros skulk!

(I’m pro-dueling, because I played that other game since release and settling an argument over class dynamics with a good old duel was absolutely perfect. Plus people requesting to duel me never made me feel… hahah, unsafe)

why are you citing 1984 in this frame of reference? Did you actually read the book and not understand anything in there or did you never read it and just pick up the phrase somewhere?

You’re obviously a smart man, you figure it out! (although I don’t know why you’re bringing the theory of relativity into this; did you study physics and never understand a thing in those books or did you just pick up the term somewhere?)

I have a question for you guys farming SW:

I’m working toward Bolt and have a way to go at the moment, my concern is the stupid number of T6 mats and cores (I already have Zap). I manage to do AC and COF every day but that’s about it for reliable gold income, would I be better off just farming in Silver Wastes?
