Oh ya this probably will never happen but it would be nice if they reduced some of our cast times and/or removed some of the directional facing/aiming requirements. Most of eles wpns arent pvp viable because the skills have castimes + aiming + facing requirements. FYI most other classes dont have this like ele does.

I thought the OP was gonna say ‘bad’. Woulda summed it up better without the wall of text.

My assessment has nothing to do with the mechanics of other MMOs, its the mechanics of this MMO. The classes have terrible balance which creates a flood of bunker builds and theres so many ability bugs with many classes that they arent even worth playing. (Necros healing enemies, RTL bug)

Not only that but they need more game modes, more maps, a better queueing system the list goes on.

Sure the OP might be a great player that doesnt do any of the things hes refuting, but if so hes an anamoly not the norm. BobF has it right.

They are not adding WOW like gear tiers that make old gear useless.

This is quote from News and Announcements:

Our Studio Design Director Chris Whiteside just posted this:
“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.

Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.

Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.

Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."

Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

Source: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/A-message-from-our-Studio-Design-Director-Chris-Whiteside

If you read it, it clearly says: We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.
It is just one level of gear. If they had that since release no-one would have been worried.

Just like legendary items (which will gain Ascended-level stats when they release Ascended weapons), Ascended items are items of prestige. They are meant to give the most hardcore players a good and challenging goal to work towards, while not breaking the game or seriously gating content in any way.

People say that this is a step towards WoW in progression. This is ArenaNet introducing a perfect solution to catering to casual and hardcore players, without creating any sort of rift between those two player types.

Also note that Ascended gear lacks slots for players to choose runes, gems, and sigils (when weapons come out). This means that despite Ascended gear having slightly higher stats, they’re less open to customization and are likely to not even replace exotics in many scenarios. I imagine this is why they are introducing the rings and back slot first, because it will not take away runes/sigils from people.

TLDR: I’m happy with new free content that we will get. I will not start running one instance over and over to get Ascended gear as fast as possible. I’m still exploring the world with friends who are slowly moving to GW2.

I’m glad you believe this. They are creating a gear treadmill for the simple fact that they already are doing something they said they wouldnt to appease the people who are already geared and bored, and the new gear is better than the other gear statwise.

So now these same people will burn thru the ascended content and get that gear and complain again and they will again make changes to the gear system to appease them.

Instead of actually creating more real content they are putting artificial barriers in the game and creating artifical time restraints just like the wards in Warhammer Online. The flaw in this design is no matter how hard or how time consuming they make it the 1-percenters will still burn thru this content and demand more and they will have to act or lose them.

Unfortunately bunkers are sapping the fun out of the game quickly. I would rather have a bunch of glass cannons of all professions running around than a guardian that can permanently hold a cap against the entire enemy team.

As far as sPvP goes, if you enter the random queue the game puts you on imbalanced teams more than 50-percent of the time and also allows you to leave games at will, thats one of the biggest issues right there. If people join games where their team is already losing they just leave the game.

Also, would be nice if they actually fixed the score board so its readable at the end of the game and during the match. In the random queu it just shows for a few seconds then automatically re-queues you. Maybe instead of wasting the resources on the heart of the Mists they should actually have built a lobby similar to how Wrath of Heroes has a lobby where you can form groups and talk to other players.

So many ppl ignore his comment about wanting a laptop. “9 pounds is hardly porable” Yeah right. Sure my Asus is bigger than the average laptop but it came with a backpack and I carry it around on my motorcycle all the time. 9 pounds is way lighter than some huge tower for a built rig with top of the line graphics card which are kitten near as big as a laptop just by themeselves, with a dozen fans, a 1000W PSU or watercooling the tower is gonna be a huge beast.

People are coming up with all kinds of funny reasons to detract you from buying a laptop here. You can get an external ketboard and mouse (I use a wifi keyboard and a razer naga both plugged into my laptop with USB) and I HDMI it to my tv in the living room when I’m at home and want to play on a big screen.

A regular highend laptop isnt gonna have a highend graphics card so you wont get the shinies. Thats the main reason to buy the gaming laptop. Like I said before a laptop will be obsolete at the same time a tower will so that argument isnt that relevant. By the time the GPU is outdated the motherboard and/or ram on a tower will be outdated as well so you will basically have to do almost a full rebuild anyway.

My current laptop has a GTX 660M, the newer version has a GTX670. I can currently run the game maxed out the only time I get hiccups is if theres a 50 ppl on the screen in WvWvW.

From what I read some of the new ultrabooks do have GTX600m GPUs and they are super thin, so that might be something to look into if you are worried about size.

If you specifically hate windows cant help you much there lol, but I wouldnt buy a Mac for gaming since they are overpriced for no reason, but you obviously have the cash so thats probably not a major factor.

Bunkers are super prevelant because these classes cant spec into other specs and be relevant.

the game is good but its till very vanilla IMHO. The TP is pretty bad (I personally think all the servers using the same TP is a bad idea the TP is just flooded with stuff from multiboxing farmers and its not easy for a new player to sell anything), the UI needs a lot of work (at least in the sPvP side), theres way too many buggy abilities, crafting isnt that great and the RNG side of having to do things with the Mystic Forge also kinda sucks. I also think the cost of things in gems is pretty imbalanced/overpriced. $10 for a 1 hour buff is kinda chincy.

I was playing GW2 in the airport when I went home in August lol. If you arent super OCD and just have to have ultra super top notch but want far better than average get the laptop man.

It doesnt really matter because tower or laptop both are gonna be obsolete in the same amount of time. If you’re like me and just hate building rigs or like I said want it for dual purpose like for school/work get the laptop.

+1 for Fynd. All the other posters summed it up too. The biggest issues are eles are forced into bunker specs to be viable and so many abilities are bugged it affects the performance of the class. Thief players love to complain that if they get nerfed they will be all glass and no cannon but an elementalist specced for glass cannon spec currently has no cannon which basically forces everyone to spec bunker spec. Not to mention that most elementalists are also forced into speccing heavy Arcane to get attunement reduction which should actually be standard for the class.

Even without a buff if they just fixed the huge list of bugs in the class it would increase its effficiency by 100-percent.

Explain the Stealth Mechanic in this Game?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: oflow.2157

oflow.2157

Hello,

This isnt an anti-thief/mesmer rant. I recently hit 80 and have started sPvPing heavily and I dont really understand the mechanics of the Stealth ability in this game.

I understand that there is currently a rendering bug that allows thieves to hit you while still invisible. I dont really have an issue with that.

My question is how does stealth actually work as far as forcing an enemy out of stealth or preventing them from entering stealth?

The reason I ask is because unless I’m just confused I’m pretty sure I see thieves/mesmers go into stealth while they are affected by Conditions like burning/poison/bleeding. Also using AoE attacks doesnt seem to unstealth enemies even though they do seem to take damage. Is that correct?

In other games taking damage breaks stealth. Is that not the case in GW2?

Thanks for your response.

in Elementalist

Posted by: oflow.2157

oflow.2157

eles do kinda suck compared to other classes. You have to be an above average player to have average performance with an elementalist, doesnt matter what weapon set you use.

The OP does have a point. The biggest problem ele have is that half the available kits dont mesh well at all, a lot of the abilities have long cast times, channels and/or directional facing requirements (Scepter 1 fire autoattack has a cast time is that a joke?) and most of our most useful tools for damage are bleeds/burns which get cleansed.

Seriously you guys might be great elementalists but that doesnt mean this profession isnt lacking. It has nothing to do with the ‘difficulty of the class’ its just that the overall design is pretty bad.

If they cherry picked the useful abilities or moved them around some to make the different weapon combos better, the class would probably be better.

But keep it real: For the most part the only real viable weapon sets are D/D, Staff and S/D. Almost everyone agrees that unless you spec heavy water and/or heavy arcane you are kittening yourself. You have to stack toughness or you get insta gibbed in spvp. Thats a bunch of restraints on build options right there before we even start.

Lets not even talk about other sets like S/F or D/F. I never see anyone making vids or showing off their success with these weapon sets. D/F doesnt even have a heal!

Not saying you cant do well with the class, but denying the class needs work is kind of a stretch as well.

(edited by oflow.2157)

What's wrong with Condition damage?

in Elementalist

Posted by: oflow.2157

oflow.2157

Its just another thing thats wrong with the combat in this game. Burning should stack just like bleeds do. There should actually be less was to remove dots, that would actually balance out the burst of thieves and warriors.

I dont really understand how this game allows only two real classes to actually make a real glass cannon build. People wouldnt complain about thieves so much if other people could 3 shot them back.

So far the way the pvp in this game works its seriously lacking since all you have are two classes with extremely high burst and a bunch of classes with bunker builds playing the supporting cast.

Fix Mob Aggro

in Suggestions

Posted by: oflow.2157

oflow.2157

The way the combat in this game works basically requires you to dodge and move around in a far amount of space. It would be nice if the mobs didnt reset after moving so far from their starting point. Its extremely frustrating to have a mob down to a corner of health and they reset to full health, run back to their starting spot but then imediately re-aggro you and attack you again while your health didnt reset like theirs.

Its also extremely annoying on how the aggro works in this game. Is there even an aggro rule set? Mobs seem to randomly aggro different people, the system allows other to train mobs on you when they run buy and its also exploitable by training mobs onto other mobs.

Could someone actually post a working model of how aggro works in this game?

I tend to agree with most of the people posting that elementalist with weapon swap would be rather OP. If you could swap between D/D and staff you basically wouldnt be able to die.

I do think that not having the ability to swap is a bad thing though. I think what they should do is something along the lines of allowing you to choose the option to swap but if you choose to be able to swap you can only spec into say 2 or 3 attunements.

Still might be a bit OP though but currently the class does need help somehwere.

The Elementalist advantage

in Elementalist

Posted by: oflow.2157

oflow.2157

I have Many 80s (Eng/Necro/Mes/Ele/Guard) and I find myself usually going back to the Elementalist these days. I could make a giant list as to why but the fact is I just prefer the class over my others for most things (not all things).

That said you’re kidding yourself if you think options makes up for raw power. I mean there’s no way I could say with a straight face my Elementalist is “better” than my Mesmer. The two are on entirely different levels.

If you take your example of the thief, that thief is going to be able to just brute force their way through many areas that we need to use various tools to overcome. For the rest of the scenarios they have a vastly superior array of escape tools and active defenses to put us to shame. That said there are few classes with the damage output and defenses of a Thief. Using them for a comparison is like taking the extreme example. You really don’t hear of many classes dealing 10k+ hits outside of Warriors.

When you really begin to look at character comparisons (which I am in the position to do with the number of high end, geared characters I have) you can see the biggest gap the Elementalist has is simply massive defensive cool downs on our Utility. As I said in another post look at Armor of Earth vs Stand your Ground or Lightning Flash vs Blink. This is most likely a direct impact of having so many options in our spec trees that we’re instead left with mediocre utility (due to low durations and long cool downs).

With the way the character is designed (four attunements) it ultimately ends up detracting from our character. Instead of having two well crafted options (like most weapon sets are for most classes) with good utility slots we’re instead stuck with four options usually with each set having one good option, a few okay options and a few poor options all with long cool down utility slots. What they should have done is kept in the weapon swapping but limit people to 2 active attunements (swap in combat) and 2 deactivated attunements (swap out of combat) and balanced it from there. It comes back to that “jack of all trades, master of none” thing which rarely does well when stacked up against the “master of one.” In other terms, look how great you are with the Ele…imagine how much better you’d be with a Thief.

Unfortunately we likely won’t see something done about it for a year or two to address the core of the issues of the Ele design if GW1 is any indication. Just one of those things people are going to have to learn to accept and move on about if they want to play the Ele.

Agreed 100%. Having lots of options means nothing when the other guy can just hit you in the chin and KO you with one punch.

Honestly elementalist needs a lot of its traits and attacks reworked. Many of the skills are good in theory but in execution are flawed. like the channeled directional abilities and the abilities with super long animations that you can literally dodge without dodging.

I’m the same way. I do play for a few hours on weekends though. I’ve logged a lot of hours in lots of MMOs and I think the reason behind chosing this playstyle for GW2 is because theres just so much stuff to do and also the way they did the events etc where it doesnt necessarily require to always group. Also the no sub also seems to ease a lot of the pressure of of having to long in a play all the time. Also, having played so many MMOs I’m burned out on the ‘must be first’ mentality that drives many MMO players. So far I havent maxed a character because everytime I get heavily into a character I see some other class do something awesome and it makes me start leveling that class lol.

Its a lot more solo friendly and I actually take my time and take in all the lore of the game. (This game looks great and I think the story modes are better than the ones in SWTOR)

Anyway, I also like not having to necessarily have to play multiple hours at a time. It lets me play other games and also keep my surfing hobby intact lol.

@ oflow

It´s true that weapon skills, closer ranged sets do lack passive defenses, which indeed is torublesome when levelling, however once traits start to become more readily available they remedy that very well.
Also, the active defenses even in melee are still preferrale to passive. It´s possible to weave in and out of melee range so that your hits land while mobs can´t touch you, cripples and chills help enormously here, as do stuns etc.
Staff really is more of a support weapon, but can still handle well in solo situations too.

But yeah, to get back to the point of this thread, barrier of entry is very high, and it should be remedied somehow.
I strongly disagree with the idea that complete revamp of the mechanics is needed, especialy since good players can still shine in pve atleast.

Well I play mostly D/D have my 30 pt trait unlocked as well as my 30pt elite and like I said compared to other classes elementalists feels really frail. Its mainly due at least for me to a lot of the stuns often bugging and not going off so when you are stance dancing in a rotation missing one throws the entire thing off.

I love my elementalist but I’ll probably change my Necro to my main just because I feel like i can do a lot more with the skill set offered. My Necro can actually kite a pack of mobs around with DoTs and kill all of them without taking damage. My elementalist can do the same thing but its a struggle as far as having to do so much work to accomplish the same thing.

How have we possibly not taken over the world by now?

what I think is the problem with eles

in Elementalist

Posted by: oflow.2157

oflow.2157

Really what elementalist needs is to have a weapon swap option to put it more in line with the other classes. Necro has a weapon swap and they have an extra form so its not like its not already being done.

They should give the class the option to weapon swap but limit you to only 3 elemental attunements active at one time, only swappable out of combat. (Or make you pick three permanent ones during the course of leveling which would also put some variety in the class itself) This would keep it from being too OP but give the class much more survivability.

Sure people would QQ about elementalists having more skills than everyone, but since they all couldnt be active at once it really wouldnt matter.

As is elementalists have to play twice as hard to get the same returns as most other classes. Not saying the class should be faceroll but requiring you to be pro caliber just to come off average isnt great either.

I’m leveling multiple characters at once and my elementalist is I guess my main (my highest level char) and my experience is the same thing.

The problem is the way the class is designed its the frailest of all the classes. Comparatively all the other classes are much more ‘tankier’ than elementalist.

To me it seems like the class was originally designed as a ranged class but then they added the option for melee but didnt implement enough shields or toughness buffs into the melee stances. It also doesnt help that a lot of the elementalist abilities in the melee specs are also directional attacks with cast times. So even if you kite you still have to stand still and in range to actually get the abilities off. Other classes have much better blocking and shielding abilities to use while in melee range or actual multiple regen abilities that counter the damage they take while standing toe-to-toe with mobs.

In contrast the elementalist pretty much relies almost totally on stuns, chill (not that great) and speed boosts in melee which is a weakness when fighting mobs that have immunity or other players, especially when combined with the bugginess of half the stuns.

It seems they have actually delegated the class to being more of a support class which is kind of a shame. Others in this thread say that you are supposed to kite and sure I can agree with that, but the way a lot of the skills of the elementalist class work (AOE and/or directional casts/channels) makes this a lot more work that it should be especially considering that most of the skills have medium/melee range.

I personally enjoy the class just because I generally like to play casters in most MMOs. But comparatively to say Necromancers its night and day. Necros can fight groups of mobs with adds and not die due to their great regen mechanics and CC.

My solution would without totally revamping the entire class would be to give elementalists weapon swap, but at the same time only allow you to pick 3 of the five elemental attunements. This would give the class more defense, burst, AOE and healing utility but would prevent the ‘ZOMG’ OPness of having the swap with all five attunements.

How Do I Make Money?

I’m relatively a new GW2 player even though I have been playing since the head start. (My highest level character is lvl 44)

I pretty much understand most of the basic concepts of the game but the problem I have is making money. I rarely buy gear or anything on the trading post (I mostly have karma gear) but on all of the characters I have leveled I have barely had 1 gold by the time I reach level 40.

In most MMOs that I have played you can actually sell the greens etc that you find as world drops for cash. But in GW2 the Trading Post is flooded with every item to the point where the prices are the same as vendoring the items.

The crafting system requires a ridiculous amount of mats so I havent really had luck selling gathering mats since the AH is also flooded with these items but I use most of them anyway tailoring. (I picked tailoring to be able to afford bigger bags since I didnt have enough cash to buy them on the TP)

So what is the secret to actually making cash in this game? Do I just need to be higher level or what? In most other MMOs I have played (I’ve played almost all of them over the years) I havent really had cash flow issues and I enjoy crafting/trading to make money. But in GW2 between having to buy gathering tools and high repair costs (ya ya I know dont die but my main is an elementalist they die a lot) I cant really seem to stack up any cash.

Do you really have to do a ridiculous amount of farming to gain money in this game?

the problem is so many people play MMOs with OCD like behavior, almost drug addict like behavior trying to get that first high again, trying to be the first person to do something. But this game isnt really designed around the carrot model.

for me the solution when playing this game is to not play long marathon sessions like I did in many previous MMOs. I play an hour a two a day and take my time. I’ve actually enjoyed the actual lore of the game and read all the quests for once.

I do think the way crafting and the Trading Post are designed is kind of a bad design which does hinder the playability of the game.
