[Suggestion] Precursor Crafting

I think the only fair way to change this system is to not change the system. Like ensign clearly pointed out, you can’t keep increasing the odds without a supply shock, unless you decrease the initial odds (screwing normal players, benefiting rich players).

The only way to fix the precursor system, in my opinion is to do nothing with the current legendaries. They should release new legendaries with new precursors (or no precursors) that have more straightforward methods of acquisition for those that prefer it that way.

That would still shock the market, because then demand would go down for the regular precursors, and then the price would fall off of a cliff. That’s the same thing that would happen if we made it easier for people to get precursors.

no…
1) people will still want the ‘old’ legendaries
2) most pres come from people forging them, which sets the price. Less people will do this if demand drops, so supply will drop… so nothing will change.
3) even if I were wrong about 1 and 2 a game will make very little progress if you’re not willing to introduce new items because they may shock other markets. But I’m not wrong about 1 and 2, the market would be able to sustain the shift in player priorities.

Yes people will still want them, but not as many. Players will go for the other craftable legendaries simply because they are craftable. If they look good people will go for them anyway, so the demand will drop by around 50%, and the supply coming in drops by 50%, but the supply that’s already on the tp or in the hands of players stays the same, meaning an excess. I’m not arguing against adding TP crafting, I’m just saying that there’s no way to go around it without a market shock. Every time ANet tries to prevent a market shock it backfires (Take silk. The price skyrocketed and supply dropped, and now we have to deal with timegating)

have you looked at precursors supplies? Spark, for example, has 7 available. Not sure how you think that can shock a market…

Pre-reset Garrison flips

Jade Quarry took Blackgate’s Garrison Saturday night I believe (although it was short lived). I know because I used that narrow window to run in there to grab it on a character that still needed it. It happens, but the Garrison’s are stubborn little places that just don’t like falling. Right before and after reset might be good times. While the colors do follow a pattern, there is a small random element to them. JQ could get another color even if it wins, it’s just more likely if they go on vacation for a week. Overall, waiting for a color change is a lot easier but a lot longer.

Actually I was there when that happened. We didn’t take the garrison, we only broke through the walls. I was running to the garrison as it happened. Unfortunately we bailed before I got there so I couldn’t get any of the poi’s or vistas. The garrison was never owned by JQ.

But if someone could give me a ballpark estimate, like % of the time they see the garrisons flip before server reset, I’d find that super useful to manage my expectations and consider my options (Like WvW nonstop for weeks until I get the points, or play whatever until just before reset, etc)

The only thing I was hoping to improve is the fairness aspect of obtaining a legendary. Keep that in mind. It is not fair that some people get lucky in 10 tries and some people still have nothing after 1000 or more tries. By smoothing out the fairness problem and saying to a player: “If you keep at it, you’ll finally get one.” you remove the anger and frustration that is associated with this crafting effort.

Legendaries are nothing so uncommon anymore. A lot of people have them. Anet should perhaps think of introducing some really stunning, unique, ascended weapon drops that cannot be crafted (think: Crystalline Sword Q9). It’s still hard enough to obtain a legendary — but the relative effort and expense in obtaining one should be roughly equal from player to player for a single legendary.

The mystic forge is like a lotto. Some people like lottos, some people don’t. But no one would ever play a lotto if it was ‘fair’ as you suggest. Yes some people will get lucky the first time they buy a ticket and some people will buy tickets their whole life and never win. That’s the point.

Lucky you, getting a precursor isn’t a lotto unless you want it to be. They’re just so valuable you want one for cheaper than their price. Pay the price or play the lotto, that’s how it works. New legendaries don’t have to be this way, but you can bet they’ll still be expensive (but maybe they’ll feel more epic to obtain, that’d be nice).

sorry for double post, replies occured while posting

Pre-reset Garrison flips

in WvW

Hi All,
I have 98% world completion and everything to craft sunrise except about 10 obsidian shards (easily remedied).

All I’m missing are the vistas/pois in the garrisons in the red/blue borderlands. (technically I’m missing a few points in the EB too, but I see those flip enough I’m not as worried)

I’m from JQ and I started doing world completion about a month or so ago, and the first thing I did was start doing WvW completion as I had seen that advice many times. So I didn’t leave it for last, but it’s still the last thing left.

I check gw2score all the time and I see the points I need in EB flip pretty regularly, but the garrisons in blue/red never flip. It seems the red garrison hasn’t flipped once this week and the blue once flipped at the very beginning (but it was BG that got it, not JQ).

Some people have suggested to me that I should try and play WvW right before the reset. The logic seems sound, but I just wanted to here some first hand accounts from other Tier 1 WvW players.

How often, in the hours (or hour?) before reset, do you see those garrisons flip? Or will I have to keep waiting and waiting hoping my server loses (at least twice) so that I can finish completion? Seems like bad design if I’m forced to root against my own team.

I appreciate anyone sharing their knowledge.

How to get PvP and WvW Hints?

I think some of these hints are just downright broken.

About a thousand times I’ve seen the “press F to finish of your opponent” (or whatever the text is) hint, and I have definitely finished off my fair share. However, it still shows that hint as unseen in my hint completion. So I just abandoned any thoughts of unlocking all the hints.

Honey, The Megaserver Killed the Guild...

1. The GW1 server system was a Lobby/Instance one. You cannot have an open world, as GW2 is, with the server system of GW1. Also, there were no specific servers, like GW2 has.

Guild Wars 2 is barely open world. Every zone is instanced.

It is NOT instanced – instanced mean not shared. They are Zones yes, but you can join someone in that zone. So it is an open world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instance_dungeon

I think you should get a better dictionary.

You’re both right. Colloquially speaking, you’re right, they’re not instanced.

But even according to the page you linked, you’re wrong…
“an instance is a special area, typically a dungeon, that generates a new copy of the location for each group, or for certain number of players, that enters the area”

that’s exactly what megaserver shards are. Each area is separate, and a new instance is generated when too many players arrive.

I don’t think this is worth arguing over, and I would have stayed out if you weren’t so overly condescending in your response, which wasn’t cool dude.

Edit: condescending was a better description of your behavior.

thanks for the replies guys, though I find them a bit disappointing. I was worried that my colorblindness was at least partially at fault for the disappointing top-down effect.

That being said, I still think they could improve it as red deficiency is among the most common forms of colorblindness. I would alter my suggestion to no longer remove that area but rather that perhaps they just add some sunrays to that bottom area like the rays of the sun coming over the horizon so that the red area also has something of appeal to people like me.

I love the blue areas so much I’m crafting sunrise anyway, only need more t6s and those kitten ed lodestones. Just wish it could look nicer (for me or people like me) from more angles.

Basically, looking at sunrise from a top-down angle (which is pretty much the norm) is pretty boring compared to bottom-up. This is because of the image used:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:SunriseBackground.png

My suggestion is pretty basic, get rid of that boring greyness at the bottom (sorry if not grey, I’m colorblind), maybe just more bright blue sky with clouds like the top, or ideally add an actually sun and bright rays of light at the bottom.

That’s my 2c, anyone actually like that bottom half of the sunrise image?

@Tribio: are you sure? I thought green was the winner of the previous matchup or something like that? We’ve been green for every week since I started doing map completion (3 or 4, at least).

@Ragnar: great advice, thank you. I kinda wish I had started doing map completion with a different class since I have others but it’s too late now. I’ll keep checking as often as I can, and just play WvW more and maybe I’ll be lucky and there for a keep flip.

@Chewy: thanks for the commentary but that’s not relevant to a question entirely about how to do it in T1. If I wanted to waste 200g to transfer to get map completion I would have already done it.

Borderlands question

in WvW

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

Hello everyone,
I took the advice of just about every person ever, and began doing WvW completion the moment I started doing world completion in PvE. I was 30% world completion at the time.

I like WvW but I have to be brutally honest. I’ve won very few 1v1s and still haven’t figured out how to counter the roaming thieves (I generally do ok against other classes). Unfortunately I’m doing completion with a guardian so I don’t have amazing mobility.

Anyway, I’m in JQ and this could be part of my problem. I like WvW but it’s very competitive in the first tier. I practice my skills in sPvP and that seems to help but my actual issue is that all I need in the red and blue borderlands are the keeps just below the respective red and blue spawns.

I keep checking multiple times a day to see if we flip those keeps ever but I’ve never seen them owned by anyone other than the corresponding color for that map.

So, question: do those keeps ever really flip in tier 1 WvW, or will I literally keep hoping my server loses the matchup just so I can get map completion? We keep winning and that’s great but it’s bad news for me.

If those keeps do flip in the top tier, are there any tools that might help someone like me know when to expect it (or notify me when it happens)? I doubt they plan their strategies in a public forum where they could be spied on.

P.S. I’ve seen a lot of posts about this by people who are complaining or ticked off. Just wanna say I’m not, and I’ve actually enjoyed the WvW I’ve been doing, usually getting map completion in the WvW maps as a bonus. However now with the maps having only 1 PoI and 2 vistas left – right at that keep – the completionist in me really wants to just put the nail in it and check it off my list.

Who's buying?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

proviticus.4183

Hi, I’m quite familiar with dungeons but I must still have some noob in me as I seriously cannot figure out why people would buy arah paths at 7g/8g that they sometimes list at.

I assume it’s nice and quick, which is convenient, but you gain 3g 26s plus 60 shards, which can be 2 rares -> on average 2.5 ectos with a BLSK, plus other minor items, let’s round up to 1.5g. That means you just paid 7+ gold for less than 5g in rewards.

Can someone explain the logic of this? I keep seeing these LFGs posted so they must be working for the runners (and I have nothing against people selling paths, fwiw).

I’ve thought maybe it had to do with getting exotics weapons but that’d take almost 4 runs to get the cheapest exotic, and losing 2g per run means you’re paying way more than market value.

Maybe it’s about berserker armor? But, CoF tokens can purchase berserker armor so that would both be quicker and you’d make money in the process.

I’ve thought maybe it was for the XP, but XP isn’t a daily reward, so couldn’t you just keep rerunning CoF p1? So that must not be it.

I’ve thought maybe it was for achievement hunters, but it seems like most of those people would actually want to earn the achievement, and the market for those that don’t would shrivel up quickly.

So I honestly cannot understand why people would pay money to make less money. What am I missing?

I perfectly understand the logic of the listing fee, as highlighted in this thread…. until you realize you must pay the listing fee even when matching highest buyer. That seems strange to me, and unnecessary.

Not having it might give a 5% advantage to buy orders, which actually could be good for the economy and the TP in general (though absolutely would be open for debate and worthy of thought).

At the least the listing fee could be directly taken from the profits, so you don’t have situations where noobs get precursors and can’t even sell them, not even to the highest buyer.

you can swap one of your professions for another one whenever you want. There’s a fee, I forget what it is, but it depends on your level of the profession you’re switching TO. So, if you’re removing a 400/500 skill and replacing it with a profession you have 0 in the cost is pretty much nothing.

Now, if you want to retire your profession permantently (like lose your levels and not be able to switch back) you can’t do that, but that doesn’t seem bad.

Bag that only accepts what you put into

I Think Steinpilz means a bag in wich absolutley nothing goes in without you manually putting it in. You have the Invisible bags which do not show the stuff in it to the vendor however this bags just gets filled with everything you loot and you have to organize it manually.

Exactly.

hopefully not, as that would be about the worst request of all time.

You must not buy one if you don’t like it.
I would like to have that option.

ok, I clearly misunderstand the idea, can you please give an example of a situation where you would find this useful? Like I already said, the only time it would differ from the last bag in your inventory is when your inventory is full, so I’m assuming your use case is with a full inventory (besides new bag). So now you equip your 2H weapon and you’re automatically encumbered? but it would have gone in the last bag anyway, and you can move it if you want to (but with your bag you’ll be forced to?) Or you find loot with all your bags full, you can pick it up without your bag, and move it to another bag if you want, but with your bag you can’t even pick it up. Do you just want extra steps to do something you could do anyway? Or is it about not knowing your other bags are full, and maybe some kind of notification when your inventory is filling up would be a useful change?

Why are precursors not ascended

in Crafting

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

why does it matter? with the wardrobe system you can make your ascended weapon look like a pre…. but then I must ask again, why does it matter? Every precursor (that I know of) has an identical skinned exotic that’s much easier to obtain.

Finally, ascended items are account bound, and who knows how they coded that. It could be difficult to create an exception.

sorry to hear man. Just remember, though you’ll look like an absolute boss once you finish howler, it won’t actually unlock any content for you, so you must have stuff to do that you enjoy in this game. Try to distract yourself and have fun, go back to the basics until you get the buy order fulfilled. It’ll happen, and once it’s done you’ll still have to find something to do to have fun while you’re looking so snazy anyway.

Power vs Critical Chance + Feriocity

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

Basically power becomes more superior as your critical chance increases for one simple reason: power affects 100% of your DPS.

If you increase your power by 10%, that should make your critical and non-critical hits do about 10% more damage = 10% overall increase in damage.

Now if you have a 50% critical chance, assuming your criticals do 200% damage, you can easily calculate 50% of your hits, the criticals, are accounting for 66% of your DPS, while the 50% non-critical hits only do 33% of your DPS. So if you increase precision more, you’ll only be increasing the DPS of half of your attacks, which only represent 33% of your DPS. This gets more and more extreme the higher your precision is. Power will always affect 100% of your precision, and therefor becomes superior for DPS once your critical chance is high enough.

How to be Patient?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

given your situation and how you explained it… you should be patient because straight up buying the pre isn’t going to get you howler any sooner, as you said, because you wouldn’t have more money for everything else that remains.

So, as I see it, you have three options:
1) buy the howler for more gold, which forces you to grind more gold or do a boring mat hunt until you have enough to finish.
or
B) be patient. Do any content you find fun. When someone sells you the pre, finish the legendary. Smile.
or
III) Go all in on being patient (remove your option to be impatient). Spend all your gold on the runestones and everything else you need (except the gold on the buy order, of course). Now you have to wait and might feel freed from the pressure. This may make you more anxious, though.

Should be an easy enough choice. Good luck, and congrats on making it so far!!

[Suggestion] Precursor solution

in Crafting

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

So I have what may not be an original solution to the precursor problem (if you don’t think it’s a problem I still don’t think you’d be too upset with this change).

Basically, why not let the pseudo-legendaries be used in place of the precursors? Like foefire’s essence, for example. It is still a hard to get exotic, but the major difference is there’s a set way to get it and you can make step-by-step progress, which is what the current precursors lack (unless you count making money as progress, but many of us don’t).

So, leave the current precursors as they are, and let them continue to be used and crafted, but also let the pseudo-legendaries take their place (basically, creating multiple recipes for each legendary).

The only place an issue arises is with Twilight/Sunrise since they require different precursors for different legendaries. That recipe could be slightly changed, though, to allow for foefire’s to be used in the place of dawn or dusk, probably by combining it with an additional item.

I’m sure there are issues with this idea, and please, let’s discuss them. I just think this would be an easy way to help us players who feel like we’re making no progress towards a precursor, while requiring little development (only changing a handful of recipes). It might tank the precursor market, but that’s true of pretty much all of the possible solutions to the precursor situation.

Colourblindness

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

+1 from another colorblind player. It is really hard to distinguish beneficial AoEs from damaging ones, at least for me. for things like CoE with the alpha I had to memorize the size of the AoEs to stop me from dodging out of those my allies were putting down and losing my endurance before the real attack.

In WvW and any play with lots of fields (pug against AC spider queen as a recent example) require a lot more concentration for a colorblind player like me, as I must look at the center of every field and actively think about discerning the color, while most players can have their focus entirely elsewhere and notice the fields.

Also, responses like Chase.8415’s really show how quick some players are to minimalize other players issues when they can’t relate. Enemies drop AoEs on the zerg all the time, and your allies drop water fields too. It’s not a simple issue, and nor is it a major disadvantage. But it is a disadvantage, and the fix should be relatively easy.

Please ANet, do something about this, or at least let us use fields like from Liadri’s fight everywhere for enemies’ AoEs.

That being said, my ‘endgame’ isn’t PvP or EotM. I’m levelling a mesmer to be able to use in my dungeon/fractal runs if necessary.

I would like to do this with PvP since it’s more fun, but within PvP I’d like to maximize my returns (even though it’s fun enough without rewards), and team arena would be best, but since I don’t have a team it’s solo arena.

Solo arena is the option you click to join solo? Where I have to wait like 10 minutes for the match to start, every time? Then it’s over and I’m back in the HotM?

Considering I’m not good enough yet for joining a team, is solo join what I should be doing? Or maybe joining custom arenas or something? Sorry for the questions but PvP is a lot to take in a first.

Thanks again for all the responses and useful comments!

PvP reward tracks

Hello all,

I’m sort of a noob when it comes to PvP and I’ve only played it a few times. I enjoy it, and I have a question about reward tracks:

About how long does it take to complete a track if I were to exclusively to do solo play (as in solo join)?

Since tomes of knowledge are rewards in every tier, how would doing PvP to collect tomes to level your characters compare in speed to EotM? How about the rewards per time spent vs EotM?

I expect EotM is more worth your time, but even if PvP can get somewhat close it would be preferable, since it’s more fun and less mindless. So, what does everyone think?

Thanks!

Anyway to level up alts quick?

actually they removed glory, so you can’t get them like that anymore (unless you have leftover glory), though the PvP reward tracks still give you tomes.

The power of gems

this point is somewhat moot, as I agree that ANet does the research and just picks whatever is most profitable for them.

I am one of the people who has the money and will spend it to get these things if I want them, even at their current prices. The thing is, the price of the item doesn’t affect how much I spend, as I choose a certain amount of money which I have available and feel ok with spending on the game and I use it, then I buy whatever i can afford with the gems.

The issue for me is a satisfaction issue. It’s not that I don’t have the money, it’s that I feel like I sure do get very little for the money I spend. For people in my group, who spend a fixed amount of money at certain intervals, it would increase our satisfaction to have lower prices, as I would never feel grumpy or guilty for having spent money on the game, like I do sometimes now.

I see this doesn’t affect ANet’s profit lines, and maybe people in my group or a huge minority. I don’t know, but I gotta say I keep forking out the money because I can, but in other games I’ve played I sure used to feel a lot better about it.

TL;DR: purchasing gemstore items with dollars yields low satisfaction, even when the income is disposable.

Wrong ascended piece, can I get a change?

don’t mean to crush your dreams but they almost certainly won’t fix this. I had a similar problem where I crafted the wrong spiritwood item when making my precursor and they were rigid about not replacing items as a policy.

I understand their policy, and for me it was just like 20g or so that I lost to buy replacement materials. I understand it’s a bigger loss for you but I expect the same copied and pasted response. sorry man.

Perhaps you have hope though, if you ask from the angle that the in-game description does not sufficiently warn the user that you can’t use two unique items.

Random unequiping kits/crystals

they explained that at the very beginning, that the crystals aren’t as strong as they were in the cliffs, and they will stop working after a while (I think after a while of you not using them, maybe 10s? not really sure what that timer is).

Unequiping engi kits, however, could be an unintended sideeffect of this change, and is probably a bug.

Too many times does a random teammate kill an enemy and you rally, meanwhile you were mashing one of your downed skills, which ends up translating to another skill when you’re alive.

Well, don’t mash #4, just hit it once when it comes of cooldown.

that’s usually what I do, but the problem is still entirely there, and it can still happen (just happens more with mashing).

I personally think the biggest fix needed for downed players is something to make you dazed for a second or so after rallying.

Too many times does a random teammate kill an enemy and you rally, meanwhile you were mashing one of your downed skills, which ends up translating to another skill when you’re alive.

For example, burning retreat as an ele, spamming 4 because your mend skill is about to recover from cooldown and bam, you rally because some enemy dies, and bam you burning retreat off an edge and die in eotm or against the jade maw (just some personal examples). A simple dazed state (which would even make sense) resolves this (albeit minor) issue.
