alright, thanks for the advice! I’ll keep trying and probably whisper the commanders to see if we can get it more organized! haven’t seen a run with more than 1 commander, though.

edit: scratch that, I have seen a teq with 2 commanders on occassion, but 4? never.

Getting Flawless Defense (Teq)

in Players Helping Players

proviticus.4183

Hello everyone,

the only tequatl achievement I’m missing is flawless defense. Just looking for opinions on how to get it (I’ve only tried to get it a handful of times, so I’m not desperate, just looking for advice).

I’ve joined organized teq’s about 20-3o minutes before spawn to help find good maps, and usually they do great, but a common problem is on the final burn phase everyone ditches defense and attacks teq, and often turrets are destroyed then.

I have actually had one run where turrets were destroyed in the second defense phase but not during the final burn phase, so maybe I should just wait it out and it’ll happen?

I usually play active defense on the turrets when I’m trying for the achievement, and there are usually no enemies at all doing anything to the turrets, and I repair them if they need it, but they’re usually always about 90%.

So my question is, what can I do to improve the odds a run gets a flawless defense? Or should I just ignore it and it will come in time? Or is this something a run needs to organize for to make sure it happens?

I appreciate any advice!

Best Way To Get Precursor?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

The precursor has been my biggest problem with legendary. I have put in more than 1900 hrs in the game and never seen one as of yet. I personally refuse to buy gems to “wallet warrior” to my precursor. I have tried the Mystic toilet multiple times with exotics and only gotten back something that was selling for less than what I put in. I have done dungeon runs every night for a while without much to show other than gold. (still refuse to save enough to buy outright) I would like to get the legendary I am working for, but I am reaching a point of saturation as how long I am willing to play to get it. It is frustrating how little playing actually counts for this precursor. I am close to calling it quits on this en-devour and going to drag all my friends into something different. I love guild wars 2, but after having all professions to 80, and not being able to get something that I have worked for what seems like forever. I may have to call it quits.

this is the philosophy which makes people drive themselves crazy. You have NOT worked towards getting a precursor. You either get one or you don’t.

Example: you flip 5 coins. The chance that you get tails 5 times in a row is .5^5, or 1 in 32. But now let’s pretend you’ve already flipped four tails in row… what’s the chance of flipping another tails? 1 in 2. Failing a bunch of drops hasn’t got you any closer, you aren’t getting closer and your odds aren’t increasing.

Your odds of getting a precursor today are just as bad as the first day you decided to try and find one: almost non existant.

There may have only been a 10% chance you play as long as you did without finding a precursor, but that doesn’t mean you have a 90% chance of finding it soon. That means you have a 10% chance of doubling your playtime and still having no precursor (and still not being any closer).

Dungeons need to be fixed

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

for those complaining about a fix affecting selling runs and ownership, the solution to both problems is simple:

make the owner a visible and transferable status. When you’re in a dungeon it should give a special status/icon/warning for players who are the owner, and they should be able to choose to transfer that ownership to another player (but only with the consent of the original owner).

However, in the case where the original owner disconnects (perhaps with a timer), the team can vote in a new owner.

There, both problems solved and everyone happy. Makes no difference though, because they probably won’t fix this anytime soon.

perc stat to crit chance.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: proviticus.4183

proviticus.4183

you just gotta do the math of criticals to realize it isn’t useful to focus on critical chance.

Let’s ignore power and assume base damage of 100 with a critical power of 200% damage.

If you have 0% critical chance 100% of your attacks will do base damage (100), and 0% will do critical damage (200), resulting in an average 100DPS.

If you have 10% critical chance, 90% of your attacks will do base damage (100), and 10% will do critical damage (200), resulting in an average 110DPS (10% increase for 0 to 10 critical chance)

Now, if you have 50% critical chance, 50% of your attacks will do base damage (100), and 50% will do critical damage (200), resulting in an average of 150DPS (50% increase from 0% chance, 36% increase from 10%). You can already see the reduced impact of precision here, as you increased your chance by 40% from the previous example but your dps increased by only 36%.

For the last example let’s do 75% critical chance. 25% of your attacks do 100 damage, and 75% do 200 damage, resulting in 175DPS. you’ve increased precision by 25% since the last example and your dps increased by only 16%.

This is because increasing precision only increases the DPS by reducing the size of your non-critical chance, but your non-criticals represent exponentially less of your DPS as your precision increases.

This becomes even more important when you include power back into the equation, as when you increases your precision you are sacrificing your ability to improve power instead. Power improves DPS output of both criticals AND non-criticals, thus providing a linear increase in power.

This is why you must balance it, and maxing for criticals may seem fancy and nice, but going from 90% criticals (190DPS) to 100% criticals (200DPS) only gives you a DPS boost of about 5%, as you’re doubling the damage of 10% of your previous attacks, which only accounted for 5% of your DPS.

as a casual player who refuses to use the TP, your best bet is to forget about the precursor altogether. Seriously, I’m not being snarky. Forget about it. If you’re one of the lucky ones it will drop in your lap and you can consider a legendary again. If you’re not lucky (much much much much more likely) you’re just setting yourself up for failure and disappointment.

I just wanted to comment that this economy is actual near ideal situations (with respect to dungeon rewards and TP taxing).

Basically, dungeon rewards serve to give the working class an income, while TP taxes serve to pull money away from the rich upper class (as they end up paying the most TP fees).

So, take money from the rich, give it to the poor. Seems like a good system for all the people that complain about wealth inequality.

I’ve had this problem with paypal for a long time. I actually did buy 10 dollars worth of gems 3 times because of the failures, but like the OP I just kept them (And didn’t know I could get a refund anyways) What happens for me is that it fails, and it tells me to contact you. Then, 30 minutes later, the gems show up. It doesn’t matter what time of day. It used to work, and then failed a few months ago(sorry, I can’t remember when)

this is pretty much exactly what happened to me. It fails, and on a page that looks like an arenanet page (not paypal) it tells me to try again and contact you if the problem persists. The problem here is that it tells you to try again, basically encouraging multiple purchases. I think that destination page should be changed to tell the user to wait for some period of time to ensure the transaction didn’t go through.

It happened for me I’d guess around 8PM UTC-4 (same as eastern US) on wednesday.

Is it really that hard to find a dungeon guild who doesn’t die left and right in a dungeon and doesn’t have people who think that scepter guardians in cleric gear is the best way to play ?
I’m honestly asking this question. After 2 years and barely no real change to dungeons (the AC spider queen isn’t really a game-breaking change…it is for people who used a pillar, it isn’t for those who didn’t bother to).

you asked the wrong question. It absolutely is hard to find a guild where you can have 4 more people who are willing to do EVERY SINGLE DUNGEON AND PATH every single day that works with your schedule.

I find all of your responses have a holier-than-though tone and you come off as an elitist. You may be better than some of us at this game, but that doesn’t make us monkeys running around in circles.

So you prefer to bank your armor because you want to keep your runes that all in all cost 40g, which is recovered about 1-2 times in a day only by playing the game?

If you know the runes you wanna use, just buy them and apply them. That’ll be less costy than anything else.

I wanna play whatever game you play! 40-80 gold per day? Awesome!

Do you mean over 1,400 instead of 14,000?

1,200 + 122 + 164 = 1,486

Just curious if the error is in the 14,000 or in the number of individual types of bags opened.

that’s over 1400 gauntlet boxes, which a gold box has 10 champ bags, making about 14,000.

Also, I don’t know that champ bags don’t have exotics, but even if they did, you only got 80 exotics from 14,000 bags. Seems like the exotic rate is very low.

One would expect, however, that from rolling for only 80 exotics you wouldn’t get a precursor, you’d be very lucky if you did.

True High Pop Server

it’s just an estimate but WvW rank tends to indicate overall population. There is some bias because players join the server just to participate in WvW, but also you must consider a certain percentage of players play WvW, so the more WvW players the more likely there are more non-WvW players.

This is obviously not a scientific fact, and WvW : PvE player ratios without doubt vary between servers, but there should still be correlation.

sorry everyone, I posted this not to get a refund or contest the charges. I posted for two reasons: so ANet knows about the bug (which might make other customers angry or desperate or cause overdraft fees), and so that other players might be aware of the issue and won’t make the same mistake in the future.

As for me, I decided to just keep the gems and leave it be. I buy gems usually monthly anyway (I treat gw2 like it had a subscription), and I will just not buy gems for a longer period this time.

Thanks for the advice on how to approach the issue if I were wishing to contest the charges, though.

Hi, I purchased gems the other day using paypal, but it failed (told me the transaction failed and to try again later).

I followed the advice, and tried again later, receiving the same message that it failed and I should try again later.

Instead of continuing to try, I checked my bank account and saw no transactions. So I went back into GW2 and decided to just pay with a credit card instead of paypal, it worked without issue and I got my gems.

To my surprise, about 30 minutes later I got the gems two more times, once for each failed transaction. I checked my account again and I still hadn’t been charged, but I decided to keep a watch on my account for a few days to see what would happen.

Sure enough, today I see two additional charges on my account for the gems. So I guess I’ve received the correct number of gems for how much I’ve paid, however it was not my intention to purchase that many gems, and it is absolutely not my fault. The error page told me to try again and I did. There was no indication that the transaction may have worked despite the error.

May this also serve as a warning for others who recieve the error message I received. Your account will likely still be charged as mine was, though at least you’ll get the gems.

fractal skin drop rate? ridicolous

maybe just stop trying to get them. Hate to say it, but that’s the way this game is.

A lot of rewards are meant to be pudding on the cake, it seems, and not something you grind for. A fractal skin might be a great extra reward for a fractal run that you were doing for otherwise unrelated reasons. But when you’re running fractals looking for a skin you’ll just have a bad time. A very bad time.

This currently applies to a lot of drops in this game, and this philosophy has helped me deal with it. Play the game for what you enjoy doing, the random BS RNG drops will come, and they may not be what you wanted most, but they’ll just be pudding on the cake.

I’ve continued improving with fractals (27 or 28 now) since my last post and branched out a little bit with different dungeon paths, but would ideally like to master new paths with experienced players who can quickly turn me into an efficient member of the group (I listen!).

I have an ele and a guardian with both run different meta builds (full zerk, obviously).

Also, it doesn’t have to be in ehmry bay, and I would also consider a server transfer for the right guild (but would like to spend a few weeks in the guild before I decide to transfer).

I’m not gonna answer all your questions, but I’ve never had a hard time finding nicer/more-casual groups for dungeons.

Hell, before I figured out the whole “DPS IS THE BEST ZERK ZERK ZERK” mindset, I used to run dungeons with my guardian in full magi’s gear. It was terrible, but no one ever complained or hated on me, since I just didn’t join zerk listings.

If you wanna play with the hardcore players, expect to be criticized if you’re not hardcore enough. But there are plenty of more casual players and you shouldn’t have an issue getting into one of their groups with the LFG tool.

I like it too. It has real potential as long as care is taken to balance the rewards for time spent. I.E. the reward for one of the clearing goals should be better than the reward for the speed clear, though, since speed clear also requires some skill, rewards couldn’t be just a function of expected time spent. Anyway, I’m not a dev and I don’t have to figure out how it would need to be balanced. I’m just saying it definitely would need to be balanced. Otherwise all those pugs will switch from “zerk 80s” to “zerk 80s speedclear”

Not sure SCs are THAT easy. It mainly depends on the thresholds exactly as Lilith said. And such rewards would be once a day like every dungeon reward meaning that if you fail at one point then you have to reset the dungeon if you only want gold reward….

But I also think the reward should be different not only in amount but also in variety (gold for speed, token for clear as an example).

I agree 100%. I feel like I must have badly worded my post, since it seems some people thought I was being disagreeable. I only said that I think it would have to be carefully balanced, and what you and lilith are suggesting is how to balance that, which is more useful than me just saying it needs to be balanced.

My example of poor balance would be that everyone does speed clears, for example if they were set at 15 minutes like the OP said, which seems quite easy with some dungeons and paths. I would still want great rewards for great speed runs.

proviticus.4183

Hi all,
I’m looking for a guild, ideally in Ehmry Bay so I can partake in guild missions and WvW with the guild, though those are lower priority than Fractals and dungeons.

Basically, I’m currently at a noobish plateau where I consider myself an AC pro, usually directing the pugs I run with. However, besides AC my dungeon expriences is mostly limited to CoF p1, meaning I have little experience in dungeons in general (though I have done many others, but only once).

My fractal personal reward level is 21 and I really enjoy doing fractals. I would love to have a group to do them with consistently. I’d say fractals is my #1 priority, closely followed by dungeons.

So, here’s the deal: I’m noobish right now due to lack of experience in these places, not due to inability. I know the meta builds for my main class (ele) and have a mix of assassin and beserker gear for him. I’ve avoided most dungeons simply because I didn’t know them and didn’t want to inconvenience a pug, and my guild hardly has anyone willing to run dungeons. I’d like a guild that could take me under their wing to develop my talents where they’re missing, and in the future where I could contribute to my full potential in efficient and profitable dungeon and fractal runs.

If this sounds like your guild, please let me know. If I’m not in game (proviticus.4183), reply here or send me a message here, I can see the forums while I’m at work, but obviously can’t be in game during that time.

Thanks!

As for the post-gift-of-fortune phase, when gathering those t6 mats, what is generally the best way to get them? Are these exclusive for rich players who can buy them all? Or, are we supposed to farm gold to buy them (thus getting rich in the process)? Or should we farm the mats, or do promotions in the MF, or all of the above (with what sort of prioritizing)?

The gift of mastery seems simple enough, and I’m still working towards that, but it doesn’t seem unobtainable. It’s the gifts of might & magic which seem like they will just suck the life out of me trying to get them, and that’s long before I need the ever-scare precursor.

However, reading another recent thread people seemed to express some criticism that the OP didn’t know how to properly go about gathering mats/etc for the legendary.

I feel I am in the same position as that OP, and my method is therefore completely unoptimized.

So, anyone willing to offer advice or a link to some info on how to best gather the mats/karma/etc that are required? I’m not especially interested in precursor info, since that info is more widely available.

I’m not familiar with your hammer, but what you might actually prefer is some kind of ranged weapon. With liadri it’s a lot easier if you keep your distance so her visions don’t catch up with you and 1 hit ko you.

besides the visions and the shadow fall, which are both one-shot mechanics, liadri is easy enough, so really gear matters less and you should focus on understanding and mastering surviving the visions and shadow fall. That takes a bit of practice, but one thing it doesn’t take is expensive gear.

The only problem you might have with crap gear is running out of time before you can kill her, but you only need to spend your money to address that problem IF you have it, because it’s very possible you can kill her with time to spare once you master her mechanics.

And everything because I must have the cute mini.

Will the valerous and brave, but unskilled and devoid of any hint of reflexes and dextery warrior defeat the horrible thing and get the cute reward?
Probably not, but stay tuned!!

I don’t think your gear will be an issue. My elementalist that beat liadri using orange gear, yes, but it was very confused gear. I tried with my full DPS gear and it was a no go since I was too squishy. I ended up using the aurora set I bought with karma (back when it was easy to get) with the runes of balthazar. I wasn’t even using conditions, and the stats from the equipment weren’t thought out or optimized, they just provided some more vit and toughness than my other gear.

I think if you have somewhat coordinated yellow gear it will likely work better than the mess of orange gear I used to beat liadri, so don’t let that discourage you, you got this.

I started using Arcane shield hoping I could pop it as soon as I saw him to save myself, but that required super fast reaction speeds. He literally (and I mean the true definition of literally) could kill me within a single second. I had a bunker build 0/0/2/6/6 which some say was bad here, which is fine… but it should have been good for survival at least.

so… how does one prepare for the sneaky ultra dps thief? is it really just about training to maximize my reaction time to blow my dodges and blocks/invuln right away?

thanks in advance

I agree with the other guy, how the heck did you get to 300? I salvage everything I find, everything, and it takes me about 2 hours to level MF with it in the 70s. I know that’s super low, because I was on hiatus for about a year in which the MF update occurred.

Did you spend loads and loads of gold on gear to salvage? My calculations showed it would cost upwards of 3000g to buy enough gear to get up to 300 MF, which is certainly out of my grasp.

So, any advice to get up there, or was it just a big investment? Also, sorry for semi-hijacking your thread.

[Edit] P.S. those two hours are usually 2 hours of dungeons (fractals + AC), which gives plenty of loot to salvage

my question is… doens’t it cost like $60 to get an account for Guild Wars? If they delete the account isn’t the gold seller out for $60, which means they have to make that profit before they’re detected?

Or is there some kind of beta going on? If there’s a beta, just make the beta players unable to send gold. If there’s not a beta just ramp up bannings until the gold sellers realize they’re losing money with each account. My 2¢

[edit] meant trial version instead of beta

it’s possible this is a game bug, but even so there’s a question as to why it only happens on so few machines, suggesting we should be able to find the cause and a workaround for it.

I’d still run a memtest, and check to make sure your system has enough power (maybe you’re overdrawing your power supply). I’ll try and think of other possible problems.
