My only problem with Engi is the lack of integration of the legendaries/weapons with effects into the basic kit usage. I’d love for the grenades to explode into ribbons and glitter when you have Quip…or lasers with Predator…just something to show off…since that’s the point of investing the time and money into a legendary. And the kit backpacks…but that’s a whole other story of course
I find Ele play style fascinating to watch but hard to replicate. I tend to go easy-mode and run around with a lighting hammer most of the time. Mesmer can be fun but the whole slow as molasses without runes thing bugs me. It’s fun to make a whole bunch of Me all over the place. Necro was a lot of fun to level but I am sad that hardly anyone wants them around for group work. I love my ranger for the pet…I just like have Mr. Whiskers following me around, I am never alone. I am leveling a thief to have Dreamer, the class is fun but that revealed status gets annoying fast when in PVE.
The ‘one profession’ is warrior right now…but maybe in a few patches the Devs will obsess over another profession. We can only hope!
Right, I have the melee target assist off as well because I have an ele I play too. So sometimes the target will randomly drop from whatever I am attacking and I’ll go flying off in random directions. It’s so frustrating!
No, sword is far from useless, the other two skills are awesome but that AA has assisted in more of my deaths than anything else. Just wish it was smoother to work with like the GS is. I really hope that’s one of the things they fix when they get around to doing whatever they plan to with this profession.
I don’t ‘get’ this weapon. I use it, I have the AA off so I can try to stop the mechanics from borking out on me but I still just don’t get it.
It seems that with the AA off, you still have to button mash the 1 key which locks me into the later steps of the chain and can cause me to miss dodge rolls. I try not to button mash but it ends up happening when everything is on cool-down.
How the heck do you work around that irritating, rooting AA? Do I attack, stop, attack, stop and attack to leave room to dodge? Do you mini kite around, stopping after each attack so you don’t lock into the chain? I end up taking way more hits than I probably should using this weapon but I can’t give up on it because it’s our main melee weapon. For awhile I stopped using it and switch to GS because the sword was making me think of giving up on the class. However, I know I can’t become reliant on the GS mechanics. Wish they’d fix the rooting already -.-
Is there a video someplace that can help?
thanks for the answers…figured it was the designer’s way of forcing us to spend valuable points on useless things. Yay -.-
/sigh
Also, the backpacks that the kits place onto your character…I found they look best on an Asura but I am a little biased because I love Asura
I’m glad someone else wants this bow for the same reasons I do. People say it’s rediculous like that’s a bad thing but to me it’s so over the top rediculous that it’s brilliant.
I saw someone running around with it the first week I played and I knew I had to have it. It’s so absurd it’s amazing!
I like my ranger and I do use the SB more so than the LB…but it really is my go to weapon when I am on thief. I have to force myself to remember to use the dagger/whatever so I don’t get into the bad habit of relying solely on one weapon.
I started a Norn to test and whoa the SB is huge on them; but I have the issues of Norn seeming so slow with the movement. It stowed weird on the charr…like it was floating and just hanging in space on the back. Might stick with the human, but I love the Asura so much. Curse soulbinding!
I wish Mesmers could use SB…that thing just screams them
Movement speeds and how they interact are still a bit baffling to me…
If you have the signet or say Windborne Daggers up…the 10% move from Zephyr’s Speed doesn’t help at all does it?
Just wondering if those first 5 were just a point sink to keep us from having a lot of points to spend in better stuff. Sorry if it’s a stupid question or has been asked before.
I prefer playing other classes.
Omg i laugh so kitten the necromancer gif !
+1 I am still laughing at the necro one
I tried playing warrior and was bored of it by level 10. Maybe I just enjoy the pain but I like ranger and necro. I like the playstyles of the casters and the medium armor users. Heavies don’t interest me in the least…sad because they are the most wanted right now /sigh
I really wish the bow didn’t clip into the Asura’s head…and wasn’t the size of a toothpick. I really, really love Asuras /sigh
I haven’t played through the Sylvari or Norn starting sequences…guess I should try seeing how the bow fits with them. It’s just, humans have such lovely armors…it’s not fair
I am finding that I use SB more often on the thief…and I took a look at the animations today. Ranger was very…um…lackluster? One unipony shot most of the time where as the cluster bomb unipony was amazing to look at! I mean I am getting it for the silly uniponies…might as well get the one that can bounce the unipony and make it rain them.
Should I get the Dreamer on a human or an Asura? I previewed the bow on an Asura but it clips so much However I love the voice acting and animations of the Asura…gah, so hard to choose! And it gets shrunken down so much compared to a Human.
I haven’t tested it on any other race, as I tend to stick with those two…would it look good on one of the others?
Yes, I want the Pony bow. It appeals to my silly sense of humor and I like the look of the bow itself. I know legendaries are a huge amount of work…that’s why I am stuck with what class do I want to stick it on?
Anyone with a ranger/thief with Dreamer who could chime in with why they chose the legendary on that character? Would it get better use from one of the class over the other?
I have both classes…and I do use a SB on both of them a fair amount of time. It’s the go-to weapon for me for ranged usage but I just don’t know what class to invest the effort into for the bow.
I love my shortbow, I use it so much I practically main it and tend to forget I have a dagger/pistol in the swap off. If you want or need AOE that’s the go to weapon for a thief. Not only do you have Cluster Bomb but Choking Gas gives you a poison field to drop weakness on everything and trick shot bounces so it makes clearing a lot of things much easier.
I started an Asura thief because all of my characters end up Asura but I took a look at The Dreamer preview and was disappointed with how much it clips everything. It looks so much better on a human it’s not funny…and yes, I want the stupid unicorn pony bow so I switched it over to a human. Figured if I was going to go through the effort of making the stupid legendary it should be on a character I can really see it
They do get better as you level. I stuck those first 5 points into the water to get the regen when in water and it helped a lot. Once you get access to lightning hammer though, it all becomes really trivial really fast
I don’t like the idea of stowing the pets to gain an advantage. We’re a pet class and if I wanted to be a ranged character minus the pet, I would have rolled up a warrior or thief. Yes my kitty might be a little ‘slow in the head’ but he’s the reason I started playing the class. Make them a walking buffing bot…get rid of the swapping mechanic for something else…give them dodging…let us have more control over their actions…but don’t make me get rid of my Mr. Whiskers please.
I went with Asura for mine…their quotes and attunement swap changes appealed the most to me. Racial elites/utility skills for this class don’t compare to the class ones so race really is whatever you want to look at on a constant basis and listen to.
Also, as Fuzzion stated…Asura are the master race
You know, I have mine up to 41 now…and I am still wondering if I am just wasting my time. However, honestly…it’s been fun leveling it. I am easily amused by having a little buddy following me around, he might be a little slow in the head but he’s mine
I joined that new ranger’s guild and it’s helped keep me going. Helps to be able to talk to others who aren’t going to just continue to tell you that you should just roll up a warrior. Give the class a shot and keep your fingers crossed that they do good things to us on Monday.
Awesome…now to get them dodging or some form of AOE mitigation and we will be on the right path.
Name: Bioengineer Bivvi
Server – Sanctum of Rall (I think thats the spelling?)
Preferred Game Type – any…not picky really.
Nice that this is happening…could use the support to keep leveling this class. I keep getting discouraged on the forums with all the negativity.
sighs ok so I was seeing everything then. Seems less and less care was put into the whole pet idea when they were making this class -.-
Are these birds just a whatever skin you happen to like best? From the wiki and the ranger pet guide thing, they both do the exact same thing and have the same f2 ability. Is there something I am not seeing between them?
I find myself with a bit of the same problem…I look at the lovely human outfits and am so jealous. Makes me keep remaking characters as I find the whole human story so boring but the outfits are amazing. I love the adorable little animations of the Asura but the lack of feminine (read that as feminine and not as little amount of cloth as possible) armors is disappointing. I could take the tiny stature on the screen, as you can zoom in and honestly I don’t care if someone else can see my stuff…I just want my girl Asura to look like a girl!
I still cant decide if I want my future ele/mesmer to be a human or an Asura.
I don’t think so. A Warrior with a staff… doesn’t make much sense
Don’t you know that the staff is originally known as a quarterstaff? And that it was used TO beat people? Somewhere along the lines, a walking staff has been turned into the magic using weapon that everyone thinks it is but a staff was originally a hand to hand martial, melee weapon so it makes perfect sense for a warrior to use it.
I’d like to see more weapons for more classes…not as a fix but more builds could be fun…and for my own personal amusement I’d like to be able to use Dreamer on a mesmer
Happy with is so subjective and I am such an altoholic!
Both have good points though. I have a hard time figuring out if in the end, the tiny weapons or the ‘meh’ gear will leave me not enjoying the mesmer vs the various, beautiful outfits that the humans have. I think half the fun of the class is how outlandish you can make them and have it not really be abnormal.
Anyone with an Asura mesmer that can give some perspective? Do you regret or love it? Do you find that the armors and weapons size aren’t that big of a deal?
Maybe I should spend some time in the mists trying the outfits out…and make two mesmers
Yes, I am asking that question for real. When I first started the game, I tried mesmer but ended up deleting it for some reason. I’d like to give the class another try as none of the other classes I played really have the same ‘fun’ factor as this one. Purple butterflies and chaos storms…I love the animations of this class!
So here’s the question:
Do I make an itty-bitty Asura model mesmer to have tiny, little clones running around or should I go with a Human or even Norn to fill up the screen space?
Or does the clone/phantasm size really matter? And yeah I know, I know ’it’s not the size, it’s how you use it…’ jokes are coming but really, does it matter for this class?
I know Humans have the best armor looks, poor Asura got sort of shafted there…but the animations of the Asura really appeal to me. So before I go leveling, just wanted to make sure the most beneficial race was picked so I don’t regret it later.
Edit – Not a fan of the Charr or the Sylvari. Sorry to those of you with those mesmers, just don’t like animations or the voices of those two races.
Thanks in advance

First off, I am a complete newbie to the ranger profession. I must have started 10 different rangers, only to browse forums, get discouraged and delete them back into nothingness.
I want to like this class. While the AI turns Mr. Fluffy into a big, kittened mess…I still like my pet. I don’t want to end up trying to make the ranger into something it’s not and ignore the core mechanic of the profession. It’s not a warrior and will never be. I am slowly understanding the micro-managment that comes with my cute little kittened friend; I have to constantly pull him back from chasing the proverbial butterfly to attack the thing that’s attacking me. I wish I didn’t have to keep recalling him to make sure the f2 gets used in a timely manner. Nothing more frustrating than watching him autoattack when I am mashing that f2 button hoping he hits it before I kill it.
Is there a build that I can work towards that will help keep Mr. Fluffy upright and on all four paws without gimping myself too badly? Or is it I try to beef him him a little at the expense of myself, or I make him a wet tissue paper while I try to get a little more survivability while he and his f4 brother are dead?
I know about running sword/warhorn or dagger and not to use the longbow/bear combo around people who can see me, or I’ll get laughed at. I like the shortbow, is it a viable second slot or should I stick with a GS for that? I also know that I should pick up Spotter when running dungeons and get the frost spirit traited as well.
So basically my questions out of all of this are:
1. Is there a build that can help keep my pet alive, or do I have to choose between the pet and myself? (I have tried Googling this but I get a ton of random stuff that don’t answer my question)
2. If there is a ‘pet build’, is it less effective than a build that buffs the just character?
3. Is shortbow a viable second weapon slot or should I stick with GS?
Thanks in advance for any advice
And yes I know, roll a warrior instead…seen it before, still want to give this class a good try though.
