So long as you learn the current bugs and how best to avoid them, you should be fine. I find mesmers to be extremely enjoyable, so long as you know that your damage comes from those phantoms and you have to keep an eye on what is currently out so you aren’t overwritting a phantom with a clone.

I have always enjoyed my asura…but when they gave me the chance to buy the Winter Outfit and I stuck it on one of my female asura, that’s when I knew I couldn’t play another race. That outfit is so stinking cute on them it’s not funny. Though, I will admit, the female charr I saw running around in a dress made me giggle and consider making one but I can’t stand charr voices.

It’s purely personal preference…sorry if I didn’t state that. I find that I would rather have a constant blast finisher or to have my auto attack hit twice than the two that the ranger’s bow does. I am not one of those players who play the profession cause it has the word range in there…I find both bows clunky mechanically, with SB being less so. I’d take the mechanics of the other two professions any day to go with my ranger’s kitten nal.

I think it’s mostly the profession description that is given that upsets most people. It no way does it accurately describe it. We are not unparalleled with a bow (in fact, bows are pretty terrible in game period but the warriors and thief bow skills are far more useful than a ranger). So when you go into a profession expecting one thing and it ends up being something you totally didn’t expect/didn’t want to play it can be a bit disheartening. And for some reason the pet classes of games tends to attract the newer players than the others.

What I most want to know is when they think it will be implemented.

If the bird’s attacks are harder to read, it is giving a mechanical advantage. It’s not like there is a way to change it.

I am not trying to start an argument…birds have a clear disadvantage in that stupid swiftness buff (though sometimes it is helpful, just not for pure dps rotation) and are made of like wet tissue paper. My cat, while is squishy, doesn’t seem to be as squishy but I could be wrong…it just seems that way. And a cat can be traited to proc bleeds on a crit, unlike a bird.

Odds are, dps wise, they are both about equal. If the bird didn’t have that swiftness buff skill, it would be the clear winner…which is probably why the devs ‘nerfed’ it with that attack.

I just think that in a pvp situation, with another human being, the bird has some advantages in being a small, hard to read target that the attacks will pull away visually from the target, making it harder for a player to keep track of. To each ranger their own pet of course

Ranger DPS Pet

in Ranger

Posted by: rabidsmiles.5926

rabidsmiles.5926

But it’s not so much the cat’s movement speed as it is the cat’s AI system. It has to be in a certain position to be able to attack properly and when a player dodges out of the way, the AI must realign itself. So your cat is constantly having to move to just the right spot to attack. It’s an uphill battle that is made harder by dealing with a human being on the other side who doesn’t want your cat to hit them.

The bird doesn’t care about being in a certain spot, it keeps swooping away. Granted, the swiftness buffing attack/animation is really irritating and takes up so much time, but against a player…how much difference between the cat’s constant positioning problems and the bird’s use of that swiftness skill does it really matter? That’s what we need answered…but it’s all so subjective and individual with each combat fight. You come across a skilled player and no pet will really be that great and you can come across a newbie who will let your cat just attack them without impunities.

So instead of using golems…can someone try the tests out with a friend who is willing to get mauled by a ranger pet for a few minutes?

Stow Pet

rabidsmiles.5926

Can’t compare gw1 to gw2. I agree, the ability to ‘turn off’ the pet so it cant be attacked but it cannot attack would be nice, but I don’t agree with a perma stow option. I like my pet and it’s part of the reason I like the class, I like wandering around with another being (albeit sometimes a frustrating and stupid one). To have us perma stow and get back everything the pet ‘take’ from us would basically mean ever ranger that ever was out there would never use their profession mechanic again. They might as well just get rid of the pets and make traps our mechanic.

What I really wish is that our f skills were more like how a necro minion utility worked. We could summon a few of them, and have them have an attack skill. If they die, we just wait for a timer to go down and resummon them again. They’d have to be toned down and have the damage lowered of course but at least we could have the option of not having them disrupt the flow of escaping. And we’d get to have a few choices of what we wanted out at what time. This 2 swap mechanic stinks.

Problem with using the golems for these tests is that they don’t dodge or behave like a human being though, correct? Can you run these tests with a friend someplace in a pvp area, where they run and dodge both the cat/bird? I think the point trying to be made with the bird’s stickiness is that unlike the cat, the bird doesn’t reset it’s targeting, it just keeps attacking…so when a player dodges a cat, the cat has to reposition itself to attack. The bird just keeps swooping. Or at least that’s what it looks like with videos on youtube, I haven’t personally pvped much with my ranger as it’s only 60something. Also, the bird is a smaller target so it’s less likely to be attacked but that’s all based on your opponent’s awareness really.

Of course…but sadly, the ranger isn’t a profession that has the ability to do that. Our profession mechanic is so closely tied with the basics of the character that stowing it turns it into a whole other profession. A warrior is still a warrior whether or not it chooses to use it’s f1, a ranger isn’t a ranger without the pet. Just how the profession was designed. I am not defending it’s design, they clearly had no clear idea of what the ranger was going to be…so it ended up being the ‘pet class’. Just wish they had put more thought into it /sigh

Yes I know the almighty dollar will win out every time and they are taking advantage of a very basic human brain pattern of ‘I can totally beat the system’. Someone gets hooked on the idea of just one more lion box, one more and I’ll get that ticket scrap. Some people have life luck and they get the full ticket with the key they got from a character mission completion but most of us aren’t that lucky.

It’s frustrating to see something so pretty and well crafted placed into the game but not be able to get it…well not without spending on lion boxes or frittering away my gold in game.

A better solution then…if the lion boxes didn’t include a bunch of kitten stuff, I’d be more likely to want to spend my hard earned dollars trying for the ticket scraps. I’ll be kittened if I am spending something of a bit over a dollar to get some useless booster I’ll never use. Cut down on the amount the lion boxes can give, then maybe more of us will buy the stupid things.

Human or Asura for my Ele?

Asura of course! And not just because they have tiny animations…it’s because they are adorable! All of their animations are just so over the top. I leveled up a human ele and an asura one but ended up deleting the human, because the human burning speed couldn’t hold up to the asura. Since I have to stare at this character for hours and hours, I figured I should enjoy it. I am enraptured with the asura and the ele dance of skill usage.

Ele tend to have many ways to clear conditions, and using a utility slot to clear a few is a waste, especially with this profession. Asura give you access to poison and weakness in an area…you get a daze and you get confusion you can add to your general toolbox. Much better options.

Not just marks…would be nice to see finishers on other skills so we can bring some utility to group work. It’s a huge downside to playing a necro and it always feels like the class is stuck at the ‘beginning’ of the game…back when all of the classes didn’t have neat toys to play with, so having a blast finisher was more of a big deal.

Stop breaking the minion AI! It goes from working fine to sort of broken to working ‘ok’ to omg why are you just standing there??? Fix the things back to how they used to behave, they are supposed to be aggressive damage dealing/damage soaking monsters…not ADD kittens who’d rather admire at the tropical bird on the ground. I am starting to hate that elite bag of flesh.

Well of Blood…why is this a light field? It’s not like we have a ton of blast finishers to abuse it being a water field.

Some of our cooldowns on skills are too long, most of the wells fall under that category. Again, it’s like the class is stuck in the past.

[PvX] My blasts prioritize my combo fields

in Profession Balance

rabidsmiles.5926

I think the ultimate problem with combos and fields is that most players have no idea wtf they are doing when they are using their skills. There is NO teaching method in the early levels of ‘This is a field and this is how it is used’ and ‘This is how you synergize with the various finishers’. Instead, they are taught to spam mindlessly and then they get dropped into group work without knowing how to properly work with others. The amount of times where I have tried might stacking on my elementalist, only to have some poison field or water field thrown down, ruining my ability to make things run smoother and quicker…I have lost count.

There needs to be a newbie crash course or something added way early in the game for new players to understand what is going on.

I am forcing myself to use the sword more, so I can study the mechanics and get the timing right so I stop randomly darting off into open space or dying cause I wasn’t able to dodge. I have to learn not to button mash the sword 1 or else it defeats the off auto-attack.

Off hand for the sword is usually a warhorn or dagger. Depends on if I am alone or what I am killing. Warhorn offers utility to a party where as dagger offers more evades to interrupt the sword 1 attacks for dodging purposes.

I keep a shortbow in my swap…I know it should probably be a GS but the SB has an escape backwards that has saved me more times than I can remember. Also, I like having a ranged weapon as backup and the longbow doesn’t play well with the sword melee range for swapping purposes.

Good rule of thumb though is to carry around all the weapons you can use so you don’t find yourself without.

Forgive me, but what mesmer weapon isn’t selfish? Sword blocks but only for you of course…scepter blocks but again only for you…GS will give out some might but usually others already have that covered. So what weapon isn’t selfish? I am honestly asking, not trying to be snarky or anything

At least with staff you have an aoe that not only damages but aids your allies as well with a random boon or two. And it lets others blast away to get Chaos Armor along with Null field. Yeah it’s on a long cooldown but it’s an option the other weapons don’t give.

Why is this class 'bad'?

in Necromancer

Posted by: rabidsmiles.5926

rabidsmiles.5926

I have a really low level necro sitting on my account, collecting dust and holding onto things. All I see on the forums is how terrible this class is…how no one will take one into dungeons and the only place they seem to have a ‘place’ is in a large WvW setting. So, needless to say, it’s kept me from digging into the class and figuring things out. I don’t want to end up wasting time getting a character to 80 only to find out no one wants to play content with me.

I enjoyed the first few levels I tried it out…the DS saved me from deaths I would have otherwise taken and I got through content (IE skill point challenges and what not) that I constantly died on with other characters. It helped me learn the dodge mechanics and how to time things properly like no other class did because there was that safety oh-kitten button. But it seems that the higher a necro goes, the less ‘useful’ they seem to be.

I know the condition stacking and overwriting is a big issue. From what I understand this was supposed to be one of the condition professions, but over time conditions ended up being given to all the other professions like it was candy on Halloween. But what else puts this class so low on the rung of the profession ladder? Is the damage too low? Not enough party support?

Or am I just listening to the few who complain too much? Is it really that bad?

So the dagger skills will interrupt the AA chain and let you evade? Either way, weapon skill or swapping it’s still a cooldown that we have to face that I don’t think other classes have to worry about with their AA.

Edit -

For pve one strategy (where max melee range isn’t necessary) it is pretty common to use sword/warhorn + sword/dagger. If you weapon swap during the auto attack chain it will break the chain and allow you to dodge. However, it is often much easier to use a weapon set evade than a dodge. For example I will switch from s/wh to s/d and use #4 for the evade. This is also more efficient in terms of dps since you will usually waste more time dodging.

So I just saw that the dagger skills do interrupt the chain…and realized it was probably because they don’t have a wait time like the #2 and 3 skills on the sword itself to get the evade in. And the #4 skill on the dagger has a fairly low cooldown so it should help with the sword AA rooting problem I have been having. Thanks for the suggestion!

Maybe I should start a fresh ranger and work with the sword from the start. I tried the other races today and the rest of them have the same basic movements so it might be the Asura wacky animations that are throwing me off. This may be a case where the adorable Asura stuff is getting me into trouble. It seemed…I dunno, cleaner when I was on a Charr to see the 3 distinct patterns of the chain? The second and third one on the Asura look similar and I am not always looking at the toolbar to see what step I am on.

Would playing with a bigger race for a while help with the learning curve? Or is it more of a all around ranger thing?
