Has ANet even offered any acknowledgement of this problem? I don’t know a single Engineer who doesn’t agree that Magnet is horribly broken right now, yet nobody seems to be talking about it.

It’s like we all know that our bugs will never be fixed. Just like the Engi rifle bugs that I reported back in beta still being a major nuisance to this day…

Basically never works any more. I’m not talking about with stability.

8 of 10 times, it will simply drop the target where it’s standing rather than pull to you.
2 of 10 times, it will animate pulling the target to you, BUT
1 of those 2 times, the target’s body placement lag actually leaves it out of range, and the game doesn’t show their true positioning at first.

Magnet used to be very bad, with only about a 30% – 40% reliability on the pull, but considering how buggy the Engineer prof is in general that was actually a pretty high success rate for us.

Now you’re lucky to get 1 in 10 pull attempts. The worst of this started after the “blink / teleport” patch and has gone downhill with every subsequent patch.

I’m now trying to re-work builds to remove Tool Kit from all 3 of my Engineer main builds, because I can no longer ever rely on it to set up burst. Barring a complete re-tooling of all my builds (which I really don’t want to do), I’m actually frustrated enough by this that I’m thinking of just quitting altogether.

Yeah. I am trying to re-work all my builds right now to not use TK any more. Gear Shield is nice but I can’t rely on TK in general any more to do anything it’s supposed to.

Just fought an Ele several times, of 8 attempted pull / prybars, only 2 pulls actually pulled her to me, and only 1 of those actually landed prybar (the second was out of range even though it animated dropping her right at my feet). So kittening done with this…

Conservative estimate: 80% of the time when I use Magnet now, it simply drops the enemy player right where they’re standing. If I already have a skill Q’d up to use on them after, I waste the CD. Why has this gotten so much worse lately? It’s always been an unreliable skill, but now I pretty much always EXPECT that the pull will fail. Half the time I don’t even know what to do on the very, VERY rare occasion that it actually pulls my target to me. This CD has become little more than a minor annoyance rather than a setup for burst.

What gives???

You have a few options. You could bait dodges with other, lower damage skills… count the dodges, and when they’re out of endurance, roll up your sleeves, cast OS, and hope for the best.

Or you could cast OS on top of you, let them walk out of it or think they’re home free, and use magnet to pull them to you…

As an Engi main, I definitely feel your pain. Current meta is kinda stupid, and definitely kitten our prof.

I know you said you tried other builds, but I am not having too much trouble surviving as a Marauder Engi, and it does crazy good cleave, fares pretty darn well in 1v1s (particularly if you get the jump on someone from stealth).

Using P/S with Fire / Strength sigil. Hoelbrak runes, Marauder ammy.
Explosives: 1 – 1 – 1
Alchemy: 2 – 3 – 1
Tools: 2 – 1 – 1
Heal Turret, Tool Kit, Granada Kit~!, Elixir S, Moartarzz

Between all the shielding and stealth, you should be able to juke or block your way out of a bad situation. You also have a TON of healing combos — enough to bring yourself back to full a couple times over.

Another part of playing just about any class is knowing when to pick your battles. You simply do not want to 1v1 heavy condi classes as an Engi, as we have some of the worst clear in the world. You also want to proceed with extreme caution against anyone with a lot of CC.

You know I used to think thieves were OP until I played one. Same with eles.

Learn to play the class and you’ll learn to counter it. The ele is full of weaknesses, it’s one of the easiest class to kill if you hit it at the right moment.

I play a lot of D/D Ele and even I think it’s stupidly imba. It’s the class I bring if I want to make sure I win, because I know I can 1v2 any other prof for days and still get kills.

I’m disappointed to see a whole lot of QQ about burning in this thread… burning is not ele-specific. My suggestions were to nerf their godlike survival. This thread isn’t about burning. Take your tears about burning to another thread please.

I would totally 2vs1 your Ele with my necro + someone if you want to prove it.

You can come with the signet spamming ele shutdown build on necro but you won’t be able to do anything else with it.

2 MM’s just throw an Engi at them for the AoE Moa that destroys their whole build.

It does turn hilarious when the Necro dodges the thrown Elixer X and is now a Moa Master. The minions retain their actives when Moa’d, so the Golem can still Charge and the bone minions can still explode.

This part needs to be fixed.

Your first three are on-point. The second two are an L2P issue. Thieves seem alright at the moment (sorry to thieves if I’m wrong… they seem ok to someone who doesn’t play much thief). Necros need a buff if anything, they are really struggling in this meta. If Lich or Rampage are an issue, bring an Engi with Chocobo Chucker juice (toss X), Kinetic Battery and HGH for the short CD. D/D Ele needs either their damage or survival nerfed, but not both… ANet needs to decide if they are for tanky or offensive play, and so far they are letting them be both.

PS doesn’t mean nothing, its meaning hinges on the profession and build of the person attached to it. Tankier folks (your D/D eles and bunker guardians) spend a lot more time holding points against enemies than they do capping or getting kills. That’s to be expected, and it means they are probably playing their role properly. A thief or mesmer with an abysmally low score probably indicates a bad player (as there is no other role for them than decap / damage and should therefore be getting flip and kill pts), whereas a bunker with a low score could mean they were actually just doing their job (holding nodes).

I get “Obstructed” a lot when I’m within 400 range, flat ground and nothing between us.

It’s not just when people are moving away, it happens constantly due to terrain bugs as well. It’s all connected with the stupidity of all teleport in the game right now… there’s not a single teleport / pull that doesn’t suffer from serious glitches right now. Unfortunately for Engineers, that Magnet pull is pretty crucial to landing burst in certain builds, so it’s an often more debilitating one for us than others.

I don’t mind playing Marauder stats. Actually I’m feeling a lot better about my cleave now. It doesn’t make the conditions totally useless, they’re used to counter specific things or as a bit of gravy rather than being the brunt of our damage. Engineer’s biggest weakness has always been condis, with only 1 heal worth taking and that removing a laughably pathetic 2 conditions. We need better condi clear and always have, it’s the #1 problem with the class.

5 turret engis is actually less smart than only running like 3. They have no mobility and once they lose a point, they shouldn’t get it back. Turret engi is not the best at assaulting a point, but better at already being there when you arrive. You have double mesmers in 1 (they destroy turret engies) and rangers in the other. You should have had no problem roflstomping in both these cases. Should have went home & far. Turret engis are not mobile and they would have never gotten the points back. Once you clear them off the point, you start killing them as they re-approach. Worst case is the engi is only half dead before he even steps foot on the point again to start putting down turrets.

You said you were trying to cleave the turrets down? You only need to kill the rocket turret before killing the engi. If you want you can take the rifle one down too and then he is really useless. That will only take 5 seconds and then you can engage him. You shouldn’t be trying to take out the thumper. Just stay out of its range and it won’t knock you down.

This is spot-on. I can’t tell you how many times I have won versus cancer turrets simply because I got to the point before they did. Just yesterday I took a point from one before he managed to get all his turrets up (didn’t have ground-target turrets I guess), by the time he had finished running around to set the point up the way he wanted it, I’d already gotten so much condi into him that he had to bail (I was running cele rifle nades +TK at the time). Once they lose the point they have a really hard time winning it back. You get to the point before them, they can’t take it, and then you push them back and spawn camp them. Just remember their weaknesses: low mobility, poor condi clear, setup time, useless without rocket turret, no roaming utility.

Turret Engi is very weak against organized teams with any common sense. They can do little else but park their butt on a point and hope you waste your time with them. If you don’t, the rest of his team will be 4v5 disadvantage. Too often people waste their time with a turret engi, and there’s hardly ever a reason to. Play the nodes the turrets aren’t on, and you’ve got a 2-cap all game.

If you do have to bother with them, their turrets are weak against AoE cleave, and the Engineer has kitten-poor condi clear. Take out that kitten rocket turret and they’ve just lost half their usefulness. There is absolutely no reason that any player above hotjoin level play should lose to a turret engi. Like PU mesmer, the best policy is to just ignore them.

Reports indicate this can happen after leap skills, picking up bundles, or teleporting. If any more reproducible steps come in please add it to this thread and I’ll add it to my report.

This happens so often to me on my Static Discharge (rifle) Engineer that I have stopped playing it completely in SPvP until the issue is resolved. It occurs about 70% of the time I use Overcharged Shot. I almost always follow OC with: Utility Goggles, Analyze, Throw Wrench, and Surprise Shot. More often than not, Overcharged Shot imposes an indefinite self-immobilize that cannot be cleared by any means except by using Jump Shot (another extremely buggy skill, but that’s for another topic). PLEASE fix!

I utilize them and mine are used as well. But I almost always play with guildmates and/or people I’ve played with before and have synergy with. You start to pick up the rhythms of those you play with often, and they yours — that is when combo fields become fully integrated and extremely strong. In hotjoins, 9 times out of 10 the combo finishers are pure chance. I personally keep my eye out for the kinds of fields I want at any given time and take advantage of them when the opportunity presents itself.

As far as finisher types, I almost exclusively use blast and leap, though some projectiles, such as condition removal, can be invaluable as well (despite the crappy proc rate).

In addition to the advice already given regarding changing build setup… Best way to beat a challenging class is to play the class that challenges you until you understand its inherent strengths and weaknesses.

Also, one must accept that some class-build setups are natural counters to other build-class setups, and there are going to be instances where even if you are equally matched in skill with your opponent, the tools in their toolbox are more effective against you than yours are against them.

1. Elixir X pulls from a much larger pool of elites across all classes (probably 6-8 skills total). Here’s the difference. Activating Elixir X doesn’t activate the new elite. It replaces Elixir X on the skillbar with that of the elite, to be activated whenever the player wishes!

Even putting a quirky fun exclamation point of excitement after the statement, it still made me cringe with loathing and dread. If RNG turned me off this skill to start with, RNG on top of my RNG would cause me to ignore Elixir X more than I already do… or would, if that were actually possible.

More RNG is not the answer. Less RNG is the answer.

The Wiki doesn’t specify how much damage the trait does because the trait’s damage is dependent on your individual stats. If you have 3% crit it’s going to hit like a sick kitten; if you have 60% crit it’s gonna hit like a truck. Actual technical measurements, FYI.

1. Bombs are better (and you can drop them farther back)

What does it mean, drop them further back? Further back than what?

“Better” meaning what, exactly?

3. E- Gun is another really good kit with an insanely good autoattack.

No argument, stacking Weakness and Bleed is awesome. Except try and kill an enemy treb in SPvP, or a quest object in PvE with only an Elixir Gun and a pistol. See you next year! ;P It also lacks the cleave that Engineer cannot achieve with any of its held weapons (choices being only rifle, pistol and shield — no true melee without TK, Bomb or Nade Kit).

Need to escape, glue bomb is better as is a smoke for blind/stealth on blast combo.

Except that combo blast finishers are on longer CDs, Box of Nails recharge is at 10 seconds — compared to Glue Bomb’s 25 seconds, and Glue Bomb does not apply the additional condition damage via bleed. Smoke Bomb also has a 25s CD and a 3s blasted stealth combo still isn’t likely to put as much distance between you and your enemy as the cripple off Nails, especially when used in conjunction with Speedy Kits. Hell, even Gear Shield is on a lower CD than the 25s Glue and Smoke bomb that you recommend — GS only has 20s CD.

I’m not trying to poo-poo Bomb Kit, Elixir Gun, or any other kits available to Engineer by any means. Bomb Kit is awesome for AoE condi pressure and combo field setup. Tool Kit is for high CC, modest cleave on builds with no other cleave, and a wicked 5x confusion wallop. Saying one is “better” than the other shows a lack of understanding of the roles of these kits.

I can only speak to the usefulness of it in PvP, but here are the reasons I use it on most of my Engineer builds:

- Escape & Fight Reset. A well-placed Box of Nails (in a bottleneck such as narrow path or doorway), particularly when combined with Speedy Kits, means you should be able to get away from almost anything. Gear shield completes the escape to negate any ranged damage your opponent might do while they’re busy eating your dust.

- Gear Shield. This block is invaluable both for bunkers and glass alike, and I use it on both for the burst protection it offers.

- Magnet is essential in my main (Static Discharge) build. Though its knockdown is usually less ideal than what is available from Overcharged Shot, the latter cannot be used in all situations (and Magnet doesn’t punish with a self-knockback). Minionmasters, Mesmers and the like need to be placed in front of their clones and minions rather than behind for an SD combo to work, and generally Magnet is the only way to achieve this quickly and efficiently. It also cancels out almost all shield block abilities, including other Engis’ Gear Shield. Useful for yanking down free-casting DPS from ledges above-point, interrupting stomps, revives and heals, etc.

- Pry Bar smack hurts like hell. Five stacks of Confusion is pure gravy.

- Overall CC on this kit compliments Rifle builds in every way — for the rifle’s push, TK offers a pull, for its immob, TK offers a cripple. Most bases are neatly covered between the two with regards to CC type.

- It works as an effective cleave on stealthed enemies, and is great for body-beating when someone is attempting to revive a downed opponent as the chain smacks will hit both at once. It also rips through enemy trebs and gates faster than projectiles (assuming you’re not using Nades or Bomb Kit).

- Worthwhile for both power and condition builds, as opposed to other kits which heavily favour conditions over direct damage.

The problems with this kit have already been mentioned — the final stroke of the chain autoattack is slow and cumbersome, the animations are glaringly obvious, and cast times on all abilities are sluggish. Still, this kit is a favourite and incredibly versatile once you’ve grown accustomed to it, and I believe its pros more than outweigh its cons in most situations.

You’re right, it’s unlikely. But they never bothered to give us a unique elite in the first place… I always prefer to offer up the best-case scenario as a suggestion rather than starting off by bargaining with a “no” I haven’t heard yet. ;3

I’ve been playing Engineer since beta. I have two differently-decked-out level 80 Engineers and a third that I play yet another build on (yes, you read that right — 3 Engis). I guess you could say I’m a little in love with this profession.

I run Supply Crate on all three.

Why? Because our other two options pale in comparison.

RNG is what makes Elixir X so undesirable. In theory, the idea that an Elixir Engineer is this kind of mad scientist who is constantly getting these unknown effects off of her potions is really cool and exciting, and thematically it’s a great idea. Unfortunately, when placed into real gameplay, the idea falls flat. I think that ANet, blindly in love with the idea of this quirky mechanic, has really done the Engineer class a disservice by keeping this mindless death-grip on the RNG Engineer concept.

I’d approve of just about any change that could be made to Elixir X (some great suggestions here already), as long as that change included a removal of the RNG from the only RNG elite there is. An idea I haven’t seen talked about much yet is to create a super elixir kit out of the elite — give the Engineer a set of tossable elixirs in a new bar, like Tome of Wrath, Tome of Courage, and Lich Form perhaps?

Glad to see this issue is getting some attention here…

Once had a guy on my team in SPvP who would run out of the spawn, run over to our lord, kneel before the lord before getting up and running off to join the match again. Saw him do it several times. Definitely good for a laugh.

- Empyreal Shard: Gained from dungeons, mini-dungeons, smaller WvW captures, and jumping puzzles.

I don’t really feel like reading through all the replies to see if this has already been pointed out, but you can also acquire 2-4 Empyreal Shards each in almost all basic chests in the game, as well (not just JP chests). Go to this page or type /wiki list of basic chests in-game and follow the list; I get 100-150 Empyreal shards per day per character (remember once you’re done with the list you can alt and do it again with a different character). Almost all of the basic chests are guarded by Veterans, so if you’re squishy grab a friend to run the gauntlet with you. This is by far the fastest, most effective way to get Empyreal solo or with less than a full party.

For those of us who hate dungeons and hate JPs even more.

Some skins from story mode can be found at the WvW karma merchant (I know, because I just got done checking), but they are NOT the skins that everyone is asking for – primarily the skin for “PvP Stalwart Helm” and “PvP Stalwart Shoulders,” the latter of which I am desperate for.

In addition, remember that the merchants aren’t marked with the typical karma icon, they look like regular armor/weapon vendors… would have saved me some time if I’d known that.

At this point, I would just about kill for the Stalwart’s shoulders, which is the only way to get rid of the ugly bald spot on my Engineer’s head from the otherwise super-cool Mist Walker helm skin.

In pvp it just doesnt make sense. glass is so bad its funny. 50% ish crit chance only 3k attack and a whopping 50% ish crit damage. WTF gives. Glass is supposed to be do or die. If you go half way you get slapped. with conditions they dont have that because most of the time they can be applied from ranges and tick while kiting. Why are conditions stronger than glass in almost every aspect of the game? because they can be cleansed? Yea GL cleansing like 5 condition bombs in a row. With glass you will be lucky to nuke them for half their HP with your full burst. while they just condition bomb you once and walk away as you melt in your boots.

Some of us go glass because there is a need for it. As a Static Discharge Engi, I know that most things in cloth or leather are almost guaranteed to go down within a matter of 2-3 seconds with a well-timed burst from me. That means I can instantly take out a source of high DPS for my team and tip the scales in our favour. And though I can only cleanse one condition at a time, I have several heals available to me, and let’s not forget that a lot of things can be blocked in the first place, which alleviates some of the pain of not having a decent cleanse.

It’s all about playstyle. Some people want to lay down conditions and watch their opponent slowly bleed out, and that works against certain classes. Others need to be dealt with more swiftly, because they will cleanse and heal through condition damage. One is not “better” than the other… each one has its uses.
