Hammerguard… How does it feel to be the only one in a niche?
Secondly, I think they shouldn’t have “unbound” either. I think they should be exactly like warrior banners. Unkillable, reliable, and have a much greater range thus useful. Hammerguard, if you really wanted to see spirits used, you’d be in the same camp as I am when it comes to spirits… then you wouldn’t be alone either lol.
There is almost no difference between the two heals. Statistically, there is a 6% difference in the amount of health you gain between the two, accounting for activation time, healing amount, and skill cooldown. The only difference is that one is a Burst heal, and the other one heals you over time. And both skills are far and away better than any other Ranger heal (except for Healing Spring with 90% boon duration)
You can read all the healing amounts in this thread::: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Healing-Skill-calculations/first#post3364762
Almost and none are not the same. There is enough of a difference that I do not take HaO and never will. I’ve tried it. In any situation I have tried it I was disappointed. TU and HS are much better. Functionally, TU is just out right better in every situation I have needed a heal in.
Talk is cheap. CDI is worthless without the accompanying action.
Judging by the lack of action taken from the last CDI before the “big” balance patch on the five toons I have, this CDI will be a non-starter.
Unless action is taken on the CDI then it is nothing more than PR.
Dailies
Dungeons
Drunk
More dungeons
World bosses
Zerg farming in FG or QD… or both.
We need to send something GW2 specific , and ranger specific.
hmm… I vote for a pet, but well, of coz malfunctional ones. what about a deaf cat?Mass effect players sent cupcakes to EA made of green red and white frosting to symbolize the lack of variety in the games endings.
We could do something similar.
We can send an animal that has a mental disorder
In the final stretch, Dur comes up with post of the year. Right here, people. Post of the year.
But the issue here is that stacking is overpowered. It’s the exact same thing as with all overpowered things: they trivialise content. This is in no way differend from mini golem bombs or other overpowered things that have existed in the game.
Going to have to tell my Wife I’m going to be late for dinner because someone is wrong on the internet…
The only overpowered “thing” that trivializes ALL content in ANY game you play is humans. Intelligence, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to recognize patterns in the AI trivializes content far-and-away more than stacking does. Minimize or do away with completely the human player’s intelligence, hand-eye coordination, and ability to recognize patterns in AI attacks and you will successfully created a hard game. All of your arguements to get rid of things that trivialize content are moot until you nullify the ability of the player to recognize things that can be used as an advantage in a game. Period. (Incase you didn’t catch what I meant one way to non-trivialize all content in this game is play drunk… everyone play drunk. Have a blower on the computer you have to blow into to register blood-alcohol levels that have to be over the legal limit for the program to start and continue to run.)
Or, just make it like that Playstation game Dark Souls.
Ah, I see. And I should outline my post with the game mode I play is PVE and mostly dungeons, so yeah lol. It is either HS or TU for me.
On my full Berserker ranger there is no better heal than Heal as One.
Sounds like an opinion. Must be because I disagree whole heartedly. TU is much better as it is almost instant cast and goes on for awhile.
Are you playing full melee or combo? I play a sword+horn/SB almost all the time (except at certain world bosses when I need the LB instead of SB or axe for tagging).
To me life is pretty cut and dry most of the time. Not much room for gray areas. What is cut and dry is that this game, because of no trinity, is built around doing as much damage as possible as fast as possible. You do that by running as much zerker gear as possible and running all the dps related traits as possible. My toons either run 80% to 100% zerker gear and traits on all my toons. It doesn’t make sense not to. I’m all for replaying content but I’m not going to kitten kitten around the same dungeons killing all the mobs a thousand times. I, and many others, are going to want to get through the content as fast as possible. The best way to do that is DPS as much as you can as fast as you can to move on to the next target, then next dungeon. Damage? Mitigated through dodging/evades thus no need to waste gears not geared towards doing as much damage as possible. Sure, a little survivability is o.k. I guess but not 100% geared for survivability. Good gawd it’d take too long to take down most things in this game. I guess thats why I only run dungeons with like minded people that want to do as much damage as possible as fast as possible. I know they are going to run the gear to do so because we’ve all ran this content 1000 times already. That is where the LB came into play with this unintended buff. I was quite excited about it but, alas, too good to be true.. Too bad I can’t play the game right now and don’t get to experience the buff. It would have seen some action outside of world boss fights for once.
If they wanted to open up build diversity that made sense they’d give/change traits to be more DPS oriented. Why? Because that is all that matters in this game. Support and tanks don’t matter in the traditional sense. Support in this game is about sharing buffs such as fury, might, and stability nothing more. And honestly, if I wasn’t so enamoured with the play style of the Ranger I would run a Warrior/Gaurdian 100% of the time.
This issue has been on our hotfix list. Enjoy the fury while you have it. x.x
Yeah … I knew it.
When that guy says something like this:
Tyler Chapman.1832:
We understand you obviously are in favor of this bug…I mean I would be too on my Ranger. The point is that it was an unintended change and we are obligated to fix it. We were just talking and one thing we do want to do with Ranger is find more places to place Fury. A lot of these posts are just erratic emotional responses filled with tons of hyperbole. The Ranger isn’t going to “go back into being useless” because of this fix, because it’s already strong. Sure it has it’s flaws like all classes but it is one of the top classes in PvP and in PvE it is competitive with top burst damage. It’s got better support than many classes and it has probably the best elite in the game. I mean it’s got an 87% participation rate in the 2v2 tournaments that have been happening every weekend. What that means is that one was on every single team in the tournament except one.
Sorry I don’t have more time to chat but things will be getting better for the Ranger in the future. You can count on it.
What he says what I put in bold it is painfully obvious he DOES NOT play a Ranger. At all. If he does he has no idea what he is doing.
Obviously Swagger has smoked some of the good crack.
Sorry, but this patch hasn’t done anything for the power build that I run most of the time. It’s going to be the same. I guess if I pvp’d and ran a spirit or condition build it’d be different… but if I did that I’d be in t/spvp and not in PVE. Although, I can’t tell if OP is serious or not… Cause if you’re “tanking” then you’re doing kitten damage because you aren’t running zerker gear. If you are running traits that take advantage of the latest patch to the traits you are doing kitten damage because you are running ranged and not running zerker traits and meleeing. Because of that I can only conclude this thread is directly strictly at the t/spvp crowd because if it is directed at PVE/dungeon running crowd in any way it is laughable at best.
1) Add skill: “Call Ally” and summons a pet to fight by your side for 30 seconds adding bonus DPS instead of having companion pet all the time. You can have different skills to call different kinds of pets.
2) Make wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Preparation the class mechanic
I guess if I PVP’d that’d mean something.
WvW isn’t PvP. It’s PvDoor and PvBlob
Jokes aside though, I can’t even remember the last time I saw a solo roamer to be able to engage in a PvP style. WvW is all about organizing zergs of players to make better tactical plays than the opposing zergs of players, and whose zerg is bigger. And by organizing I mean things like “stand here,” “DPS this,” “hold this,” and “suicide this tower/keep circle to add an extra millisecond to the time it takes that gigantic mass to capture it or get raged at for life by an angry commander who thinks 1 v 50 and that extra millisecond makes all the difference.”
So yeah, I can totally understand why a person would never enter WvW. PvP players can be even more elitist and toxic at times, depending on which end of the community you are dealing with, since competition seems to bring out the worst of everybody’s egotism, but at the same time, none of their own crap stinks.
Sorry that the update isn’t all that helpful in the area of the game you play! It isn’t really super overly helpful in general, but still.
Point well made, sir. I do enjoy a bit of the wvw zerging sometimes but I bring my thief or warrior out for that one. Dat backstab from stealth is fun.
LOL @ all the people hoping it doesn’t get fixed. If you want this bug to stay, I guess you’re OK with all of our other bugs remaining too.
Bigger LOL @ the people deluding themselves into thinking its not even a bug. Yah, I’m sure they’re going to give the intended Greatsword buff a 10-second cooldown and then add a LB version with no cooldown at all.
You know that the pets still exist, right? So it is obvious they are ok with leaving bugs in the game with no intention or ability to fix them.
Check mate.
Not pretty much, it is always inferior to TU or HS.
They started out with that model and are still using this model.
Strolling past the broken corpses of glass cannons on the third floor of the Tower of Nightmares makes me think they are exploring a number of ways to dissuade ’Zerker-uber-alles.
Dodge this: tick-tick-tick-tick…
I played zerker ranger, war, and gaurdian through the tower with very little problems unless I went all LJ and ran into mobs wrecklessly. Like anything else the Devs have come up with it is a matter of timing the dodging. They can’t get rid of their current model without bringing in the trinity. They are simply trying to make up for not having a trinity. This doesn’t make dodging to mitgate damage any less important, it only makes it more important. Also, the best way to get through the tower was huge zerg or five man or less team. Either way it was mostly about running by all the ads that didn’t need to be completed to advance (like running by mobs in dungeons) or steamrolling with DPS…. Like much of the content in this game.
Also, not sure why you guys have such a problem with the AA on the sword. I don’t have issues at all with it. I also find it fun to try to time my dodges on the sword against what the AI is doing.
… but melee dps is something other classes do better (much much better). Rangers strength is range dps. If youre not using a bow you’re better off with another class.
Although I dont do dungeons.
No. Not true. With my ranger sword/horn + roa + cat I can out dps my warrior gs/axe+axe + banner + shouts. I know this because the standard COF p1 gate I knock out faster on my Ranger than I can on my Warrior. I can also knock it out faster than my Mesmer or thief.
If I see someone join my dungeon group with a ranger and they have a LB equipped I immediately put the AB to kick ’em… especially if they got a brown bear out.
These days my lbow has 2 uses, the thaumanova fractal final boss and tequatl.
I also use it on Claw of Jormag and Golem II with Eagle Eye for that distance bonus.
Yeah… Sounds like something I won’t be using. I’ll stick to HS and TU, mostly TU.
I guess if I PVP’d that’d mean something.
Not a bug. Working as intended. They said they were going to buff the LB DPS. Mission accomplished.
By the way, the game is built around doing as much damage possible as fast as possible while mitgating it through dodging/evade. That’s what happened when they decided not to go with the traditional trinity, thus no “tank”. So, yes, any nerf to the ability to dodge is bad.
They started out with that model and discovered it makes for terrible gear diversity and dodge-spam>Everything gameplay.
They started out with that model and are still using this model.
They made my Gaurdian and Mesmer look better for sure with this patch.

This is your perception of the game-I just don’t think ANet understood most people would boil it down just as you did. IMHO they felt it was liberating, letting players choose different playstyles rather than just focusing on DPS. Ultimately (and sadly to some extent) most encounters can be trivialized by a group focusing on DPS with some choice utilities and strategies. In short, for most group encounters in the game, it seems to be that way, but I am 100% ANet does not agree with the “no trinity=only DPS matters” stance (or “PvE is DPS, other stats are for PvP” which they have never stated anywhere.)
On topic, I didn’t like that nerf myself because dodges are always useful regardless gear choice, be it “bunker” or DPS. I admit I never used any other vigor traits, because I prefer my endurance to regenerate slowly than an on-demand Vigor boon. Right now not even using it, though there are still myriads of ways a Ranger can have lots of survivability, Vigor or otherwise.
Until they go to the traditional trinity DPS will always be king. That is why this patch is lackluster for me except for the LB buff and stealth buff. I’m going to trait to do the most damage I can as fast as I can with my ranger. I going to run kittened pets that only do the highest damage since CC doesn’t matter in PVE/dungeons.
It’s the same thing in PVP except you’re doing it with conditions instead of with direct damage. Spam conditions = as much damage as possible as fast as possible. And if you can dodge those hits you can dodge those conditions.
(edited by thefantasticg.3984)
When they nerfed the tokens I get from running alts through dungeons… Yeah.
I can’t wait for Scarlett to be dead and gone story wise. I want to get back to the dragon lore.
Pretty sure I remember a “might be” or “may be” released, nothing definite.
PVP wtf is that?
Oh, that small niche game mode dwarfed by the large PVE population? Never play it.
They made my Gaurdian and Mesmer look better for sure with this patch.

I don’t think it’s a bug. I think it’s intentional. They said they were going to buff DPS of the LB. Mission accomplished.
Two months to review and analyze feedback but they didn’t change a kittening thing.
Thought I was only one that thought this.
Best thing about this patch, far and away, is the stealth buff to Eagle Eye. If they take that away the entire patch is less than useful by a country mile. I’m not going to run that water spirit in pve/dungeons. That’s just silly. I don’t trait for spirits because I don’t PVP. The only useful thing I will get out of this patch is the LB DPS buff. That’s pretty much it which I will use during world events. None of the traits they mention in the notes will see any action from me as they don’t add anything to my Ranger’s DPS as far as I can tell.
Getting the ascended from laruels and that is it… and doing that pretty much between dungeon, farming, and world boss runs. I’m not down for any more time gating BS.
Forums, not at home.
Yup. Same here. If I am at home I’m either enjoying gaming or one of my other hobbies.
When I have down time at work (which happens frequently) I visit the forums related to those hobbies. This is merely one of many I visit over the course of a work week.
CETheSnowflake…. Sure, they can do well.
Oh wow. I didn’t expect you to actually admit you were BSing. Okay. Glad that’s out of the way? o.o
If the Ranger class did so well then you’d see a lot more “LFG Ranger only” posts, but you don’t and for a reason.
I don’t see “LFG profession only” posts for anyone, expect for warriors and guardians, with the occasional mesmer for speed clears and high level fractals.
Interesting criteria for what makes a class “good”, it says a lot.
By this logic, Ranger is the best class because we can roll Lupicus in 41 seconds without warriors, guardians, and mesmers.
Right?
Good job on cutting my qoute, Snowflake. GG.
Now with that out of the way… Like I said the amount of skill it takes to do well on a Ranger means that if the same player takes up a less handicapped class they will excel that much more. Mince words all you want but if a player can use a Ranger and roll Lupi in 41 seconds, he can do better on a another class that doesn’t have a Lead Game Designer admitted mal functioning don’t know when it is going to get fixed class mechanic.
My wife plays this game. She isn’t a gamer by any sane definition. As long as she wants to play, I’m in. Of course, the moment she says she is done with the game permenantly, there is no reason for me to keep playing and moving on to something else… especially since (my favorite class) the Ranger’s pet isn’t getting fixed now or maybe ever… although I really do like the people in my guild. They’re good people and mostly entertaining.
Instead of killing the champ train why dont we make activities in other maps more rewarding? Im kinda tiered of this “i dont like it so nerf the kitten out of it” attitude that is in all MMO’s why dont we do the reverse and bring everything up instead of bring one thing down?
Most of us that use that thing between our ears are tired of this seemingly endless dribble of “I don’t like it so nerf the kitten out of it!” because of nimrods that are mentally ill with parentlism.
Best way to kill a champ train is to make the rest of the events (meaning all events everywhere on every map) more profitable. People who call for things like champ trains to be nerfed need to be banned, at least for two weeks, because obviously they have a mental condition (parentalism) that needs to be cured.
CETheSnowflake…. Sure, they can do well. Sadly, it takes a lot more effort to do well with a Ranger overcoming the AI shortcomings than it does on a class not shackled to a lackluster AI pet. Take someone who is fantastic on a Ranger, allow time for learning a new class, and they will be 10x more effective on a warrior, gaurdian, or mesmer as they are not crippled by having the pet.
If the Ranger class did so well then you’d see a lot more “LFG Ranger only” posts, but you don’t and for a reason.
- Pet should ONLY come out under express command from player input: my reasoning for this has to do with the next change I will propose, but also the fact that it is annoying when your pet comes out and attacks a target just because you got hit
- Ranger pet stats should be a subset substracted from the player stats: this would make it so that if I decide to keep my pet stowed those stats would transfer back to me and enhance all my attributes, this would make it possible to run w/o a pet and NOT suffer from poor performance because you do not have a pet out
Oh, if they did these two things it would be Heaven in Tyria. Granted, they need to hotkey passive/aggressive. Why that isn’t hotkey’d is beyond me. Seems like a severe lack of polish not to have that option. You know what is great is when I play my other toons and the class mechanic works and not AI controlled… and on that thought train… I don’t understand why if Thieves can have two (yes they have two between steal and initative) class mechanics why can’t we? I mean, steal on the thief isn’t even broken like ours is as eluded to by Jon Peters. Why can’t we have pets and preparations? No reason. Make it PVE available only so they don’t have to worry about balancing the 2nd class mechanic in PVP.
IMO they haven’t fixed the pets because of technical limitations of the AI code and processing requirements. I don’t think it is possible for them to fix the pets unless they mustered all their resources which simply is not going to happen.
I also don’t understand why people get bvtthurt at the mention of making pets optional… it’s like they take this kitten personal or something equally stupid. Why? Why don’t you want the option to have a class mechanic that works properly? Why do you want everyone to suffer with you? Why must you be so selfish as to want us all to use the same band aided pet that you want to use? I don’t understand this thought process that thinks having a not fully functional class mechanic is acceptable.
Of course, you both must be PVE only, and not talking about dungeons… because you are GROSSLY mistaken as Rangers are NOT the top tier in dungeons. Never will be as long as we rely on the pet to complete out 100% damage output. Now, if I had the option to take a spirit pet that granted a passive and my Ranger does 100% of the damage out put instead of having the pet we have now, then great. I’m totally down with this idea. Sign me up yesterday.
Whether you like it or not, Taku, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Large part of the non-bot Ranger player base (take a look at the many hundreds and hundreds if not thousands by now posts in the Ranger sub forum about it) has wanted the pet changed to be optional since it was realized they aren’t worth squat in many situations. Of course, if you refuse to see that, there’s no helping you. Jon Peters has already admitted they can’t/won’t fix it, that’s why they’ve been band aiding it to date. Sounds to me like it’s a better time than any to get the option to not use the pet and get 100% of our damage out put back. It’s not like I play the Ranger for the pet… just like all the Rangers in my guild we play the Ranger because the play style (read: what we do with the Ranger, not dealing with an inadequate AI controlled pet) is just fun.
Just incase you didn’t know, S&R went to useless mode when they nerfed it not to revive defeated players… it’s dead to me anyway. YMMV.
Came for the moose pet, but stayed for the beaver pet.
Only spirit I will run is frost spirit for the passive bonus and thats in dungeons…. like COF p1 where class doesn’t matter that much.
Sorry, but other than the passive on frost spirit in dungeons, spirits suck worse than a turbocharged hoover on meth. Of course, they only suck if you care about actually doing damage.
Want to make spirits worth a kitten ? Make them EXACTLY like warrior banners.
EDIT: Speaking strictly from PVE/Dungeon PoV as I don’t WVW/s/tPVP.
(edited by thefantasticg.3984)
You want to be effective in a dungeon group with your Ranger? Run spotter, sword+horn/SB or GS, jungle stalker/red moa (for might stacks and fury), healing spring, frost spirit, the lightning one, and RoA. Only use SB when you can’t melee. Get really good at dodging. Get in close to group use F2 on stalker, moa, frost spirit, and the horn #5.
Don’t be surprised if you aren’t running this setup that you get kicked from the party… If you show up in the party with a brown bear don’t be bvtthurt because you immediately get kicked. If you are going to get your snowflake feelings hurt because you’re running a ranger, yes, suck it up and reroll. I did. Learn to play the other classes. I now pick what class I’m going to play depending on what dungeon we are going to run and what the party composition is. I’m going to run whatever I think will help us get through the dungeon as fast as possible.
Oh, and one more thing, some of the dungeons, namely AC, lend themselves to be done better/faster using elementalist weapons. So, when I run AC, we normally replace one of the warriors with an elementalist… speaking of which, I need to roll one.
Why is the ranger normally the last one standing in a dungeon? Cause they’re pew-pewing kitten damage from the rear while their brown bear limps around.

This PVE game is all about doing as much damage as possible as fast as possible and mitgating damage through evades/dodges. Next patch is going to hurt everybody (I think Guards and Mes aren’t getting hit by it but I don’t remember) on the endurance regen… so yeah, doing as much damage as possible is goign to be even more important.
To that point, if I see someone looking for no rangers, that means they aren’t looking for necros or engineers either because they want to get the dungeon as fast as possible and the Ranger, Necro, and Engineer just aren’t built for that…. Know what you need? Burst (warrior & mes) and extreme party support (guard, mes, war). Most of the parties I run would be served a lot better for running 3 wars, 1 guard, 1 mes or 2 wars, 2 guards, 1 mes. Of course, all should be (in the least) mostly or all zerker. I don’t run fractals, just the regular dungeons.
I assume we are talking PVE only?
No, rangers don’t need their admitted by Jon Peters “broken” pets.
Depends on your build (gear/traits) and how you play. If you suck at the game you aren’t going to last long in melee no matter what class you play. Of course, if you are just using bears and SB/LB then yeah, you’ll last, but doing crap damage. Bears are the “tank” which is why their damage sucks.
I’m still having this problem as is my Wife. This is rediculous how often this happens. Couple of times it’s kitten ed me off to the point I just logged off for a day or two.
I look at the list of buffs ankitten ot impressed. It doesn’t make up for the, in proportion, massive nerfs. S&R nerf alone was just mind blowingly bad to a Ranger’s worthiness to a group. The only “buff” thus far that was worth its’ weight was the pet de-aggro. Other than that they still have many buffs to go before they make up for the nerfing they have done over the last 300+ days I have been playing… but, given the past history, chances are fantastic that the buffs will never make up for the nerfs that have hit and the ones coming.
Done a couple of dungeons with full ranger parties… Sure, it possible, just takes forever compared to when I run a full party of warriors or guardians. Why? Because I’m usually the only one that will run sword+horn while the others pew pew with sb/lb brown bear.
Depends on the dungeon… Running TA, no. LOL… Need stability. Honestly the only ones I bring my Ranger for are COF p1 and SE p1. Everything I else I bring a warrior, guard, or mes depending on party/dungeon.
Unlike some snowflakes in this thread I can’t settle for, AT BEST, a failed class mechanic when I have four other toons with class mechanics that work.
I have a thief and a warrior. Niether of which play like the Ranger (which I love the play style of). If you tell me that they you just made it painfully obvious you have never played a thief or warrior. If you did you wouldn’t make such an incredibly stupid statement such as that. The closest that comes to the Ranger play style is a d/d or d/p – SB thief, and it is still a far cry. So much so it is to insult the intelligence of any rational being to suggest that the ranger is similar in play style to the thief or warrior.
And there’s no defending a broken class mechanic that the lead game designer said they’ve been band-aiding since launch. You can try but you might as well just be kitten ing in the wind with your mouth open and save us all from your wasted hot air.
