also chris any comment on the poor reception of scarlet and when you plan to get rid of her. It seems obvious from this thread that for every 1 person who thinks she is great there is 10 who just get annoyed by her and view her as poorly written deus ex machina. While showing her motivations may lower the ratio she is not a well received villain and it is likely too late to fix that.

This has been answered. They have a plan for Scarlet. They will not discuss future plans.

My favorite release was either the F&F release with Molten Facility (which I thought was excellent) or Bazaar. The Zephyrites seemed very interesting, especially their connection to Glint, and yet away they went… along with that part of the story.

Least favorite? Perhaps Last Stand at Southsun? The Canach fight wasn’t my favorite. I wasn’t a huge fan of Sky Pirates either for the same reason: the dungeon mechanics. “Run in circles for a couple minutes trying to avoid red circles that move faster than you do” is not a fun mechanic. Nor is “surprise! 25 stacks of bleed lololol now try to rez your Thief again…”

And I agree that Reward for completing the Teq event should be a gaurunteed ascended item. Once people have gotten their achieves, back pieces and what not, it sounds like these folks dont return. Why bother?

Wow. Guaranteed Ascended? That’s steep. I think a guaranteed Exotic would be overkill, but I’d at least be willing to consider it… Ascended is crazy-high reward, though.

A steady schedule is a good thing. Brilliant even. Shifting the cadence to 3 weeks or a month or whatever (and jettisoning the aspect of new content vanishing every few weeks) is rich with potential. Having the next release always just floating out there in the void of “eh, when its done” is not the only alternative to “quit wearing us out jumping through 14 day hoops”.

Listening to the devs on the livestream talk about how quickly they have to put together the story and lines to get it off for voice-over recording, etc, really pushes me to think how much better the content would be with a 3-week schedule. That means that each team gets 6 months instead of 4 months to build content. That’s HUGE.

Or even, perhaps, a schedule where there’s an initial release, a secondary release 2 weeks later (like we’ve had so far), but then 3 weeks before the next team’s initial release. That gives us 2 releases every 5 weeks but gives each team 5 months (up from 4) to build content.

I’m curious as to whether ArenaNet would even consider changing the release cadence or whether they are just too locked into it at the moment…

Scarlet Briar
A hot topic it seems on here. I LOVE HER CHARACTER and I’m not sure why others don’t.

Others have stated why they don’t like her character…some in extensive detail. It would be good to hear a reason why you think her character is good?
(Besides from just saying “I like it”)

Scarlet makes me laugh. That’s not entirely due to writing, at least some of that is Tara Strong, but I find myself giggling pretty regularly.

I like the concept that she knows things we don’t know. Hey, she knows things that she probably shouldn’t know.

I also recognize that, contrary to what people here have said, she’s not an expert in everything. She’s more of a jack-of-all-trades, learning bits and pieces from lots of places and putting that information together. (You’d have to listen to one of the interviews the writers did to pick up that info, though, it’s not immediately obvious from the game/short story.)

Mostly, I like her because she’s a different villain from the ones we’ve had in game so far.

I’m wondering if I can distill some of this down. Let me know if you guys think this accurately represents what the majority are saying here.

For players who play the game a lot, they appreciate the fast pace of content and additional things to do, but many would like to see more depth to the releases.

For players with limited time, the frequent releases (combined with temporary achievements and temporary content) feel like a constant rush. And a not-very fun one, at that.

Across the board, it seems as though the story is missing on many points. If there is a motive and strong story behind Scarlet, it hasn’t been presented in-game clearly enough for most players to appreciate it.

My suggestion, based on the above, is to add new story-filled, repeatable, permanent content. Really, I think what you should start to look at adding are dungeons.

Those could be dungeons in new zones (which, as an explorer-type, I’d love!) or existing zones. Here’s just some random ideas…

1. Consortium Headquarters (Southsun Cove) – a dispatch from Ellen Kiel warns that the Consortium seem to be building a new golem and planning on using it to sabotage the Black Lion Trading Company. While Kiel is no friend of Evon Gnashblade, her top priority is protecting Lion’s Arch. In the dungeon, you infiltrate a Consortium facility on Southsun. You can choose to 1) avoid detection and sneak through a side path, where taking aggro means huge spawns of mobs 2) fight your way straight to the laboratory or 3) create a diversion, splitting into two groups where one must protect an NPC who draws out enemies from the lab and the second group must enter the lab and destroy the golem.

2. Desert’s Edge (Fields of Ruin) – a team of Ebonguard went beyond the gates to the Crystal Desert from Ebonhawke but haven’t returned. You must set out and rescue them. You can choose to set out via 1) airship (which would crash-land during the path, leaving you to complete it on foot) 2) borrowing an Iron Legion transport (which would eventually get stuck) or 3) teleporting to the last known location of the team (which would require you to then find them via foot.) Something like that…

Obviously, the devs wouldn’t use these ideas directly, but my thought process here was to take existing stories and try to add detail somehow. If they got the full dungeon treatment, we could learn a lot more about things which exist in game but have a lot of question marks.

Just my own personal preference, I prefer the opposite regarding zone changes. I would like more permanent zone changes.

Permanent zone changes are fine, so long as they are for the better. In this case they made Kessex considerably uglier and sadder, and that should not stand. If they want to take already ugly zones and make them uglier? Fine. If they want to take ugly zones and make them prettier? Fine. If they want to make rlatively neutral changes like knocking over buildings or whatever, fine, but permanent changes should not be for the worse.

I think the new Kessex Hills is INCREDIBLE. I loaded the game and ran around for a bit there about an hour before the patch. When I loaded back, the change was nothing short of gut-wrenching. It was perfect.

I’m an engineer, so maybe this is WAY too data-driven of a way to look at it, but here’s what I think would be interesting: build a list of types of content. Cut scenes, “find X rocks,” “kill Y things,” dungeon paths, new maps, etc. Rate each activity on three measures: effort to create, fun for players, replayability for players. Make a 3D graph.

I get the feeling that certain things are being done because they are quick to create, like the “fix signposts” and “find these things scattered around” kind of activities. Those aren’t very fun, though, nor are they the sort of thing you’d like to do over and over and over.

I’m curious if there’s a few activities that stand out as having only moderate effort to build but are lots of fun to do. Jumping puzzles and mini-dungeons seem most likely to fit the bill, but it’d be interesting to see what the full dataset looks like if you have, I dunno, 20 or 30 different content types listed.

Thanks for your feedback, but it doesn’t sound like you’re the person who should be addressing many/most of the points this thread brings up.

Were you expecting the devs to come on here and do one of these?

1. “Point somebody made.”

Here is our solution to this point.

2. “Another point from somebody else.”

Yes, we will fix this by doing X on the patch that will hit on Date.

3. “Angry point, RNG bad, Scarlet Sue.”

You’re totally right and we’re sorry. Here, have Cantha!

If so, I think you’ll be rather disappointed with how this process will go.

Your first point is true. When feedback is phrased like a demand it usually gets ignored. Constructive, thoughtful commentary is what we need. Thankfully, there’s a lot of it in this thread so I and the other devs appreciate that so many of you are taking time to formulate your thoughts.

Regarding your second point, yes, I’m the lead writer. I manage a team of narrative designers and writers who are currently tasked with writing plot, advancing character development, and drafting dialog for the Living World releases. I do not set the release schedule or contribute meaningfully toward critical design systems like rewards, skills, combat, etc.

That stated, comments about the release pacing (a.k.a. how frequently we put out Living World updates) and related features (task tracking, replayable content, etc.) are extremely useful to others at the studio.

Thanks, Bobby. I can only speak for myself, but I do appreciate the work you guys put into the forums. Especially given that, unless you’re not on the west coast for some reason, you’re reading and responding to the forums at 7:30am, which I think says volumes for how seriously you guys are taking this.

Put another way, there should really be a logic behind these alliances. A reason the Krait, who attack everyone on sight, would agree to this. A reason the nightmare court would agree to this. Other than a cackling evil supervillian, I’m evil because I’m evil motivation.

Yeah, I mean, why couldn’t they give the Krait some sort of reason, in-game, to work with the Nightmare Court? And tie it to Scarlet? You know, something like… Scarlet somehow can get the Krait some of their important religious artifacts. The Krait are xenophobic, but they are also religious, so maybe their religion can overcome their xenophobia?

Just spit-balling here…

You’ve completely ignored the biggest problem with the living story, most players WANT PERMANENT CONENT! You’ve got 10 pages of people telling you that they want new zones and more permanent content. Yet you haven’t responded or provided an answer to these players at all. I’m not trying to be rude, but I thought the idea of this thread was for you to listen to the community and provide us with feedback. You still need to address:

1. Permanent content! We want new areas!
(New zones and areas etc.)

2. The pace of the Living Story!
(2 weeks is too fast!)

It would be really appreciated if you could address these issues.

1. Demanding things from the developers will get you nowhere.
2. Bobby Stein – correct me if I’m wrong, guys – is a writer. He can’t address those issues because that’s not what his job is.

We’re not talking much to each other here. I’d like to ask everybody a question of my own:

What if Living Story steps didn’t have “conclusions” at all? What if something just happens and we’re left to deal with it indefinitely? Would you enjoy playing the content even if you don’t get to “win” or “defeat” somebody during a patch cycle? Or is some sort of conclusion, even just a mini-conclusion, a necessary piece for you to enjoy content?

Colin-

The question for you to answer is (and I mean this in the sense of “answer this question with your game” and not “I demand an answer to this…”):

What kind of television show do you want to be?

Right now, the Living Story feels a bit like a sitcom. Every “episode” stands on its own. Sure, some new characters come along as regulars. Some characters skip episodes, they go away for a bit, then they show up again! The story mostly is per-episode with some general themes that run over time.

I’d suggest this is the wrong type of show. Suggesting the right type of show is harder.

I saw Breaking Bad as an example above and that’s probably a good suggestion. Breaking Bad had relatively strong seasonal arcs that were introduced quickly, but the story played out over many episodes. I think this is what you’re trying to do, but I’m not sure it’s working.

Because of the way your development teams are structured, let me suggest another format: Lost.

In Lost, there was an overarching story, but the characters and storylines frequently split. You’d have two groups with two separate stories (the beach vs the caves, for example…) along with side stories which stretched multiple episodes.

What I think you should do – and there’s maybe some evidence you’re doing this – is have each of your teams work on a particular storyline. Kasmeer/Marjory is one – I’m assuming the Dragon Bash team is also the Tower of Nightmares team? So we can see them again in 4 months. Rox and Braham seem to be another.

You need to establish characters and storylines which will last years and be based on the same characters with a progression of content. There needs to be STRONG AND OBVIOUS connections between what they’re doing – Rox’s “reason” for being around Tequatl was pretty weak, to be honest. And their stories have to tie into a larger narrative about the world of Tyria. (Right now, this “larger narrative” seems to be Scarlet, but I’d much prefer her to be one of the 4 storylines.)

I probably have more to say about this, but curious what others think so I’m going to post and read all the stuff people have been saying while I’ve been typing this.

Q: Why do we keep getting backpieces and minis as rewards?
A: Given multiple races, genders, and character sizes, it takes quite a long time to build any armor that isn’t a backpiece because it must be designed multiple times for different models. Backpieces are (likely, but hey, I don’t really know for sure) WAAAAAY faster to create. Ditto minis.

If the Living Story happened at a slower pace, we might be able to get better rewards from it as well, as the designers working on the game would have more time to build real gear.

There are lots of good lists of problems here, but I believe a huge number of them are tied to the same core issue:

Because of the Personal Story, the Living World can only modify the game in very limited ways.

(Ignoring the irony that story you shipped with the game has limited the story you can tell afterward,) I have a few suggestions/comments for how you may be able to handle this issue.

1) There is a reluctance to add new zones so as to not stretch out the player-base. I understand this, but you have to let this one go. For many of us, having new areas to explore is one of the reasons we bought this game! That sense of adventure, exploring someplace new, is my favorite thing about this game.

2) If you add new zones, you can build those zones to properly change based on the Living World. You can have cities build or destroyed over the long-term. You can have massive changes to the landscape. You can have enemy types wiped out. Give yourself a new region of the world with the Living Story in mind and you’ll be able to do so much more.

3) To keep players in the old zones, scale rewards for DEs based on the last time they were completed. You get small rewards for events that are finished every 10 minutes, but if it’s been several hours (or days!) since an event has been completed, the rewards should be significantly higher. This will keep players in old zones even if there’s a shiny new area.

4) Tie the new area into GW1 lore! For example, we could explore the ruins of ancient asuran civilization on the way to defeating Primordus.

5) These zones could be rolled out over time. For example, the journey to defeat Primordus could take six months: you have to travel to a specific rift and there’s a new zone that leads you there. Then, when you get to the rift, you have to build a safe way in and out, so that takes a month… Next month, the entrance is complete and you can start to go inside… until you find a gigantic cavern of enemies which must be cleared. (Hello, Queen’s Pavilion round 2!) Then, a month later, you’ve cleared the cavern and can push further… etc.

That’s the kind of stuff that I would find compelling, anyway.

I want to know how “normal play” and 15,000 candy corn for a bag, 20,000 for a miniature are related beyond “Most of you are serfs working in the fields for your Trading Post betters”…

Really? I have not yet checked out the price for the bag but I was hoping to get one. But is it really 15k candy corns?!? I’ve spent four hours in the labyrinth and have accumulated fewer than 200 candy corns. How can that bag be obtained in any way other than grinding short of buying candy corns? According to my calculations, grinding out 15k candy corns would take on the order of 300 hours or 12.5 entire days.

1. Sell your candy corn.
2. Buy a 20-slot bag from the Trading Post.
3. There is no step 3.

@timmyf: If you use “value” to represent in-game currency, then yes your argument of 15000 candy corns at 8c each is reasonable. However think of “value” as your own personal time (which is almost the only thing of value when playing this game). The value for the candy-corn bag GREATLY outweighs the value of a crafted 20-slot bag in these terms. Keep in mind that I’m not getting the candy corn bag for “free” because I could sell the 15000 corns on the TP for more gp than it would cost me to craft a 20-slot bag.

Right now, yes. Candy Corn is in disequilibrium. It will eventually come down in price. My point was more that they choice a quantity of Candy Corn based on the information they had – that its final value is roughly 8-10 copper each – and that the choice is reasonable.

The current price of corn, however, is not reasonable. There was a shock, so to speak, to the supply when somebody bought about 4 million pieces. (Or many people. I don’t know who would have the inventory to manage this alone, but I guess somebody does.) Then there was a demand shock when ArenaNet announced the 20-slot bags and other items.

Players who buy bags with corn are behaving irrationally. VERY irrationally. So: sell your corn and buy a 20-slot bag with it.

I don’t understand why anybody would complain about this. It makes ZERO sense to use corn for bags.

Regardless, the OPs point was valid. There are two, incongruent operations going on — what’s sold to the public (i.e. pax interview) and what’s implemented in the game (i.e. 15000 candy corn for a 20-slot bag). If you fail to see some of these conflicts then don’t bother replying, we’re never going to agree.

I don’t expect everything in the game to be handed out for free. However most should be obtainable by casual play (i.e. playing for 10hrs a week). A bag for 15000 corn is on the grindy side. A different route could have been a bag for “one token” where that token requires a difficult 2hr run through a new dungeon path. That’s very doable for the time available to a casual player.

Keep in mind that “casual” does not mean “unskilled”, “untalented”, nor “unmotivated”. It’s simply a category of players that aren’t in this game many hours a week.

You know there’s tons of other ways to get 20-slot bags, right? I’d agree with you if that was THE ONLY WAY, but this is just a way to make candy corn semi-valuable.

Candy corn prices should stabilize somewhere around 1/10000th of a 20-slot bag (assuming no other rewards are more valuable.) Right now, that 20-slot bag costs 68c * 10000 = 68g with corn. Most 20-slot bags are 12g-ish. So the logic behind 10k corn is that candy corn should be worth about 12c each.

What was the price of corn before somebody bought it all up on July 7th?

9c.

The bags are priced appropriately.

EDIT: sorry, bags are 15k? If you re-do my numbers above, that just means the price for corn should be 8c which is even closer than my example. Looks like they just extrapolated the stable price of corn to get the amount required.

I think that you should stop and strongly consider what you’re about to say any time you are about to speak on behalf of the entire playerbase.

A lot of people play Guild Wars 2 and they have a diverse set of opinions.

I can only speak for what I’ve seen with my friends and my guild, but none of us seem terribly upset about Ascended gear. Some folks have it. Others are working toward it. Others have no interest in obtaining it. Nobody has quit the game over it. Nobody feels betrayed by ArenaNet.

I honestly wish we would just let the Manifesto go and have a discussion about where GW2 is and where it should go from here. Constantly referring back to a years-old video and evaluating whether the game strictly confines to the ideas presented there is silly.

Look, let’s rephrase this to mean what the OP (and many others) really mean:

“The thing that I want requires me to do something I do not want to do.”

That could be:

1) Grind
2) Cost
3) Gameplay Type
4) Difficulty
5) RNG/Luck (which can tie into Grind and Cost, but I’ll list separately)

So: “I want a Legendary, but I can’t get a precursor because it <cost OR luck>.” “I want a bat greatsword thing but I can’t have it because <RNG>.” “I want Arah armor but I can’t because <difficulty>.”

The key here is that you want a SPECIFIC item. As far as I’m concerned, ArenaNet has not broken any promises. They said you could have max stats easily, not “any item you want.”

Ascended gear is a more legitimate complaint as it represents a pretty substantial cost and requires crafting (which not everybody enjoys.) But I’d say the vast majority of complaints that I see are from people who don’t want to put in the time/effort/money to get a cool, rare skin.

It’s cool. It’s rare. And sometimes you just can’t have it.

Revitalize Zones with Reward-Scaled DEs

in Suggestions

Posted by: timmyf.1490

timmyf.1490

Hey guys! I love running around and exploring, doing events, etc. I find it fun! Sadly, many members of this community only find things fun if they are ALSO rewarding. This got me thinking…

You have a cool idea with kills: if something hasn’t been killed in awhile, you get bonus XP for killing it! Neat! The problem is that, for most of us, we have more than enough XP and the bonus still doesn’t fill the rewards gap between dynamic events and, well, basically anything else.

Also, you have a bunch of empty zones.

Oh, and for new players, those empty zones make leveling a little lonely.

Plus, you did this huge karma nerf which could make it very, very difficult for new players to gather enough karma for karma exotics and legendaries.

Put this all together and you get one solution so obvious, I can’t imagine I’m the first to suggest it: make dynamic events reward more coin, karma, and experience the longer they wait prior to completion. (If I’m not the first to suggest it, apologies to the fine individual who came up with the idea first.)

Events that are completing shortly after firing – Queensdale champ events, anyone? – will reward the same amount of each. Events in, say, Timberline Falls that go hours before anybody bothers to complete them? Award 10x the normal rewards. (That is a suggested “cap,” but it should be on a sliding scale.)

This would start to draw more players into the open world to complete events and give a way for explorers and altoholics like myself a chance to earn some rewards.

Here’s what it means: “Because you kittens keep trying to hold us to statements we made three years ago, everything we say must be true now and forever. Right now we have no interest in raising the level cap, but we can’t say that in case we make that decision I’m three years and all you kittens QQ over it.”

This is why we can’t have nice things.

Why are Exotics so rare?

So you get really excited when they drop. Exotics were supposed to be significantly harder to get, but it turned out that crafting them was pretty cheap. That wasn’t ArenaNet’s original intent.

Guild leaders like myself wish there were better ways to find members as well. I’ve tried posting info on sites like gw2guilds.org, so maybe it’d help to look there?

Remove Renown Hearts

I hate renown hearts. Absolutely despise them. I consider them one of the worst things about the game.

So I don’t do them. (Well, I did them once for map completion and now I ignore them.)

I don’t think they should be removed because, for reasons I could never truly understand, some people like them. And/or need them.

The Casual Player Debate

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: timmyf.1490

timmyf.1490

I’d like to suggest keeping the casual/hardcore terminology based on time invested in the game and adding new terms for your preferred difficulty of content and desire to min/max – perhaps relaxed/intense?

I’m what I would call relaxed hardcore: I play pretty much every day for hours, but I don’t mind spending much of that time wandering, exploring, helping guild members, or /dancing. I’d like a Legendary – two, actually – but I’m in no rush. I’m working on a Ascended crafting at my convenience.

I’m not necessarily bothered by the time-gating. My biggest problem is that ArenaNet keeps releasing content that is 1) zerg-tactic and 2) rewards players more for failing or glitching or skipping than actually completing. I don’t like to Zerg or fail or glitch or skip, but that means I’m choosing lower rewards. And I often have to argue with others to do it my way. (Which basically never works.)

Ecto Salv Rate decrease after TEQ patch

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: timmyf.1490

timmyf.1490

Improbable things do happen.

With 0.9 ectos per rare, to not get one in 7 salvages is a chance of 47%. That’s hardly “statistically impossible”. In fact … it’s statistically inevitable to happen to every single person in the game sooner rather later later.

Do the math before claiming things.

I think you did the math incorrectly. You did .9^7, but that’s not quite right. If it was just a 90% chance to get 1 ecto or a 10% chance to get 0 ectos, you’d be correct. Instead, it seems like it’s something more like 3 “rolls” per salvage with a rate of ??% chance for an ecto.

In that case, the chance of getting 0 ecto on 7 salvages is actually .??^21.

Or maybe I’m way overthinking it/completely wrong. But 47% seems far too high of a rate for 0 ecto on 7 salvages.

LFG Tool Beta - Is it really out there?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: timmyf.1490

timmyf.1490

Below is more guessing:

According to chinese number, 2.5mil players in a week
/7 = 357142 per day
IF 1/50 is in beta (which I don’t think is too low from observation): 357142/50 = 7142
Still isn’t that many.

I think they have to split EU/NA because of how party system works.

Just a very simple example of how your guessing is totally pointless:

2,500,000 players per week does not equal 357,142 players per day. It could be 1,000,000 that are on daily, 1,000,000 that play most days, and 500,000 that only log on once a week on weekends.

So even if your completely ridiculous assumption of 1/50 were correct, that could mean 1/50 of 2,000,000 on weekdays. Which would be 40,000.

The point is that you have no clue and guessing is useless. Just be patient and you’ll get LFG too.

I’ve talked to people – lots of them – who think you have to damage Tequila Sunrise in order to get credit. I think there’s just a lot of poor knowledge out there about how events in GW2 work.

On my shout Guardian, I’ll often do entire event and boss chains without bothering to attack the boss. Ever.

1) Stop assuming you know how many people have access to it and then drawing conclusions from there
2) A slow rollout is better than a full rollout where the tool is completely broken
3) The decision to do a slow rollout is based on the many problems they’ve had in the past, so this should be an example of them learning and doing better, not an example of abject failure

PS ArenaNet look I’m defending you can I have LFG now purtyplease?

I like the idea that the dragon events fail most of the time. Isn’t that how dragons work? They show up and terrorize an area and then leave… until a group of adventurers brave and powerful enough to take them on show up and slay them.

I see it as an improvement, to be honest.

But that’s sort of my point: if we give the elitists their own place to go, the rest of us can safely ignore them! Since the CoF1 nerf (which I called for and was very excited about until I realized that it spilled those people out into the parts of the game that I play), there’s just been a lot of unsavory min/max Zerkerism that is all over the place.

I’d rather give those people their own place where they can focus and be rewarded and stay out of my way.

I have an awesome life actually. I just hate that everywhere I go to get away from kitten like this I still get to see it. This is just another youtube fad that in a month when the next one hits, nobody will even remember.

There’s a joke here that I just don’t know how to deliver. Something about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs requiring a new top level for “Absence of Stupid Youtube Videos.”

On a serious note, the thing about pop-culture references is that you never really know what will stick. I still regularly reference old gems like “Boom goes the Dynamite” or “Over 9000” etc.

And even beyond nerd culture, there are things that start as songs or movies or newspapers articles that stick. Thinking that you can decide, literally weeks after one appears, whether it is lasting or not is kind of silly.

Yes, the odds are that this is a stupid fad that nobody will remember in a year. But what’s wrong with ArenaNet making some cash off it on the Gem Store in the meanwhile?

(On an even more serious note: they’d never be able to license the song in time to create the content before people move on to the next fad, so while the suggestion is funny, it’s almost certainly not happening.)

Make an Instanced Hardcore Dungeon

Just thinking out loud here: the reward could be a percentage of the total accumulated entrance fee. So, for example, you could charge 1 gold per person to enter. If 1,000 attempts are made before one is successful, the successful party could receive a certain portion of the 5,000 gold that has been contributed.

Or, even better, have floating rates for each: the longer the dungeon goes without being defeated (or the lower the rate of success), the higher the entrance fee and reward become. That helps keep noobs like me out and ensures that the rewards match the difficulty.
