If I’m going to be forced into a gear grind to compete, I’d rather do it in a game that does gear grinds/dungeons/pvp better.

This game had one solid pro to outweigh what needed to be worked on, and they decided to toss that pro and ignore the broken content.

Feels too much like Nexon now.

Hi Landeyda,

Thanks for taking the time to post your questions. Mike O will respond to the top question and I will respond to the bottom section.

Ascended Gear is designed to fill the ‘Time’ gap in regard to the distance between exotic and Legendary in terms of progression and in retrospect would have been better to have been rolled out pre launch.

I would also like add that we have never said there would be no vertical progression. We do intent to focus on horizontal but we will have vertical progression moving forward with the focus on zero grind and a very low power curve.

Please understand that we see the community as a ‘whole’ and therefore are not intending to design again for one specific type of player over another. This is a misconception and one that is not promoted by the team. We will continue to develop the game for the community as a whole offering game play that caters to lots of different types of players in a unified approach that will evolve over time based on feedback and the direction the team as a whole wants to take.

chris

Well, there it is. Vertical progression is here to stay.

Welcome to power creep, folks.

It’s fairly obvious that none of you have ever worked retail, or left your houses to buy something IRL.

Most companies do offer price guarantee as long as it’s within a reasonable amount of time.

The sheer amount of ignorance on these forums is appalling.

Is GW2 A Different MMO Now

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: veritech.1048

veritech.1048

The only thing that made GW2 different from any other MMO out there was the lack of gear grind and gated content.

Other than that niche, everything in this game has been done better by other games.

Too bad they decided to skirt chase the WoW crowd, because that’s worked out so well for all those other dead MMOs.

Again semantics. They said legendary is on terms with exotic. They also said legendary will equal top in slot gear. They never said exotic would always be top in slot. Therefore legendary = whatever top in slot is. Therefore legendary = ascended now.

Is it really that hard to comprehend that you may have misinterpreted?

It’s all irrelevant. They stated clearly we wouldn’t have ascended, and therefore exotics would still be best-in slot, if they didnt make a mistake.

You don’t need to interpret MIke O’Briend or Colin Johanson. Lindsay Murdock said that very clearly: we introduced ascended because we weren’t able to design endgame properly.

Show me some concrete evidence that they stated clearly “We’re not going to add ascendant gear”

Show me concrete evidence that this isn’t supposed to be a train simulator.

They actually have stated that exotic would be the final, best gear. They also stated that they wanted exotics to be easy to get.

A company sells their product on a promise, a manifesto that there would be no gated gear, no gear treadmill, no power creep. A promise that this MMO would be different.

Well, turns out that the entire time they have been developing gated gear with a power creep.

Why have they been developing this feature that was not needed when so many things in the game are broken?

The storyline is mediocre, at best. Whoever thought we should all play right hand to Treebeard the magnificent should feel bad.

The camera is still wonky.

Free transfers are still ruining WvW.

Bot problems.

The man running the economy doesn’t know anything about economics.

Broken events, broken quests, broken skills.

All of these problems that need to be addressed, and what did they spend my money on? Something I didn’t want, something I stopped playing other MMOs because of it.

Power creep. That’s all it is folks, don’t try to cherry coat it.

Should Anet continue on their current design model this game will just be another burnt out husk we will all refer to as another failed WoW clone.

Where/When did they state Exotics are the final tier?

When they promised no gated gear and no power creep. In their manifesto.

That never said Exotics were the last tier we would see. All it said was Legendaries would always be the Best in Slot items.

But they did say that there wouldn’t be power creep or gated gear.

This implies exotic is the final tier.

Just because you cannot read, doesn’t mean everyone else cannot.

One addition is not power creep. Now if they added a couple more tiers, I’d say they it is, but right now, I would say not.

Nothing is gated, you can still experience 100% of the content without Ascended gear. You can still fight all the bosses in the dungeon, you can still see all 9 fractals, you can still collect relics. You can do it all. You can even change the difficulty all you want. Agony kicks in at level 10? Just do the dungeon at level 9. The only thing you miss out on is Agony.

I can read just fine, I also don’t dig into quoted text looking for messages that aren’t there. The quotes I’ve seen all explicitly state that the rarest items (Legendary) will always be equal to the highest tier item. None of that has changed in the slightest.

Actually, yes, it is still power creep. It’s slow power creep, but it’s still there.

It’s also not the last time they will do this. Murdock’s blog post clearly states that this is only the start of “personal” progression and that more gated content is on the way.

And just because it wasn’t implemented straight out the door doesn’t mean they lied. It’s possible it was meant to be implemented from the start, they just hadn’t finished it yet.

You’re right, it is no longer true because they broke their promise, and broke their manifesto.

Thank you for finally understanding.

Agony is just the first thing that needs to be infused against. With new dungeons will come new infusions. It’s still a treadmill it’s only been abstracted a tiny bit so some people won’t see it.

FACT: If you don’t like games without vertical gear progression, you shouldn’t have bought game clearly advertised as not having one and yourself go play something else?
You’d have much more to choose from anyway, since every MMO out there has it.

Instead, everyone who dislikes gear treadmill now ends up in a game with one anyway.

And wither you like it or not, people have asked for this change. So there are quite a few people happy for it. It’s coming and there isn’t anything you can do about it.

Chris Whiteside.6102:
I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.
Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.
Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores.
Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

And tell me why should we believe them after they already lied to us?

And there is no way of spinning this to be anything than what it is, an outright lie to the playerbase.

You didn’t get lied too just stop it.

ArenaNet is a business, then made a decision that they think bests suits them for the game. company and the players.
Ya we get it, you don’t agree with their decision so your going to shout, yell, stomp your feet until you get “heard”.
Pretty much the same thing as my 10 year old daughter would do.

No, we also have wallets.
And them can remain closed.

And word of mouth can be negative instead of positive

NO BS, but I know of 10 people who quit GW2 because of being bored at 80 in the last 2-3 weeks. They have been watching info about The Lost Island patch and when they found out that there was going to be some kind of gear progression and a new dungeon, they will be coming back to check it out on the 15th.

So their wallets are going to open back up, just because of gear progression. And if they like it more will come.

And if that’s the direction Anet wants to move in when they promised there would be no gear progression, that’s fine.

But they can move in that direction without my money or support.

Arena Net are starting to wake up! Ascended Gear, well it’s a start I suppose.

Now give the addition of raids, progression and you will keep a large bored slice of your player base and bring those that have left, returning.

This game could be so much more! if you only cater for the more hardcore game types, I wanted GW2 to be my MMO of choice but due to lack of raids this game lacks.

Now before the torrent of casual tears starts, I ask you why are you so bothered? just don’t join in simple!!! Hey your casual, stats on gear, progression should not bother you in the slightest, not like you have the time or want to make the effort is it?

Fuller servers, more players and most importantly sales would increase as you open up to an alienated raid player base.

Go back to WoW.

Go back to Guild Wars 1

Many of us bought into this game on a design promise to not include gated gear progression, or gear grinds.

Now we’re being told that the entire time this was a lie.

Your immaturity aside, this is not the way to run a company. It’s very obvious that Nexon already has their greedy hands around NCSoft and Arenanet. This whole debacle is a slippery slope for loyal customers.

who say’s your going to be locked out of content do to this???

if players lock you out thats because there Dicks thats not the game’s falt player’s are Kittens.

Not only will not bringing infused gear to dungeons make you a liability, but the entire design concept of infused gear goes against what players have been promised.

It’s very obvious if this change goes through, that Anet cannot be trusted.

If they really do push this change in, then I will move on to greener pastures.

I seriously hope Anet stays away from artificial difficulty in the future, and actually designs real challenging content.

This is a PvP oriented game.

In PvP you need to be able to quickly identify a class so that you can adjust your tactics accordingly. If everyone could wear whatever they want, it would make it harder to identify where a particular threat is coming from (ie. an elementalist raining AoE on your group).

Now, the counter argument to this is to just revert to normal in a PvP area. This works in sPvP where it is a separate zone with different rules and equipment. WvW however transfers everything from PvE, and would require extra dev time to implement a new set of rules.

It’s just too much of a hassle for a minor cosmetic convenience. The only way I could get behind this idea was if you could put on any armor in your Town Clothes tab for role play purposes.

To be fair there’s 2 viable sPvP builds. One is the glass cannon 100b spam warrior and the other is the more balanced Captain Hammer build (which is far more useful outside of cooldowns).

The dungeon roles are very lacking because of weak support outside of a group revive and a couple of shouts. You either get DPS spammers or wammos. The worst part is that the healing support line has to be the worst, it makes you better at reviving downed allies.

If this is the “balance” everyone else wants to be brought up to par with, seems like Anet’s taking us in that direction.

I love how everyone is claiming the warrior is the most OP or most complete class.

No support
No roaming ability
No tanking
Longbow is only good for area denial

Only thing warriors have is insane burst on stationary targets (use your dodge button and suddenly the warrior does no damage), or CC out the wazoo. You can’t even have access to both.

It’s currently regarded as one of the most useless classes in dungeons and sPvP. There’s a ranger on every tPvP team guaranteed.

It sucks that you got a slight nerf, but don’t try to drag every class with you just because you can’t ultra-bleed people to death anymore.

The point of PvE and PvP in MMO is the progression. It feels more satisfactory to know that you could possibly have a chance at gearing your character to have that slight advantage against people who don’t. I know a lot of people hate this because they always say “blah blah, i don’t have the time to gear to be competitive in PvP” but who cares. If you don’t have the time to gear your character in an MMORPG then you certainly should not be playing an MMORPG as it requires nothing BUT time.

So, you just want to wave your kitten around because you think that gear/time=skill?

I also love that this very same argument was given by EQ players when WoW came out because WoW just handed you gear.

It’s not a matter of “I just put out my turrets and check them once in awhile”. That’s bullkitten, because turrets even when fully traited go down like tissue paper when focused on and without micro management. The problem is that, especially for this specific event, people put their turrets in a place where the centaurs cannot access them and then they just go AFK.

This actually is exploiting.

In fairness, ArenaNet definitely posted that daily and monthly achievements reset at GMT midnight. Also, the daily achievements have been resetting at that time all month. It’s your own kitten fault for not finishing everything in time.

I thought it would reset tomorrow at 5 when the whole world was in October.

You know, because that’s the logical route instead of shafting certain timezones out before the month ends.

So the monthly achievements reset a whole day early

This is the second month I’ve been jyped out of because Arenanet gave us 5 days to do a month worth of stuff, and then left a bug in for an entire month.

I can say that I’ve given Anet enough time to get their kitten together, and clearly they have not.

You being a rabid sycophant isn’t humorous.

If this is the worst thing that happened to you this month than you are an extremely fortunate person.

I expect my entertainment to be entertaining, not an exercise in frustration trying to work around a bug.

And it is a bug. A bug that kept plenty of people from completing the monthly.

It happens I guess. but if I recall, it’s set to GMT 0.

And at no time did Arenanet tell anyone this.
.

What, you expect them to call you or something?

I’m pretty sure you will live through this.

Free advice: Finish monthlies before the end of the month.

Yes. After I just blew through a good chunk of my gold trying to craft for the broken survivor monthly.

Feels wonderful and so much fun.

How is it October in Monthly Achievements already??

You guys had a whole month. Wow, lol.

An entire month of trying to deal with the broken survivor achievement. Some of us have work and lives.

That was the last one I needed and I finally had time to sit down and spend the gold leveling my crafting to get it.

Then I noticed how shafted I got.

kittening wonderful.

It’s a real kittening slap in the face, get off work prepared to finish out my last bit of the monthly and just noticed it reset?

Nice warning on that one Anet. Any chance I can get my rewards and points because I was at 99% and just needed a little extra work.

Probably not.

What a kick in the nuts.

Except thief is kittened in PvE.

Everyday I come on here it’s either thieves, warriors, or mesmers that are OP in pvp.

I’m playing a Guardian, and I see all these people running glass cannons and shrug it off because they just die trying to break through my defense.

When people say the grind in GW2 is optional it means that I can log on 3 years from now at 80, and still be as powerful gear wise as people decked out in legendaries.

This is not true in WoW. If you’re not on the gear treadmill, you shouldn’t even be playing.

The grinds for legendary items is not even nearly as kittenome of the equipment grinds in GW1.

I don’t play a match of CS and go “Okay, now where’s the end game.”

I don’t play Skyrim and go "Okay, now where’s the end game.

The game doesn’t need to hand hold you because it’s intended to be fun, you’re intended to choose to do what you want to do. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing.

The goal is to control everything on the map. How is this so hard for you to understand? The benefit is tons of buffs for the realm.

There’s your reward.

I’d hardly call myself a sycophant, I do a good deal of complaining about bugs and issues I’d like fixed.

This more towards the people that bought a game wanting a skinnerbox, didn’t receive their skinnerbox at the bottom of the cereal box, and now want to turn it into a skinnerbox.

To them I say the largest slot machine of all time just released a new expansion, and it will possibly fulfill their need to be rewarded and coddled for doing the same activity over and over. For a month or so, when all the content is on farm status and becomes stale.

I’d rather have a skinnerbox than this: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Legendary_weapon

The grind to get a legendary weapon is ridiculous. It’s funny, cause I thought Anet hated grinding, what with the anti-farming code and stuff like that.

They stated they didn’t want forced grinding. You don’t have to get that weapon. It’s just a unique skin to show off if you really wanted it.

Are we getting psychology in here?
Because I think you have a textbook case of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome

;)

The fact of the matter is this. As far as you see it, players wanting rewards makes them animals. But that’s faulty logic. They’ll still do exactly what they’re currently doing (which you are implying isnt animal-istic) but they just want extra stuff for it. Which is more materialistic that anything else.

Your comment on Stockholme Syndrome is moot. I can stop playing this game whenever I choose to, there is no one at Anet holding a gun to my head.

Materialistic implies material possessions. Strings of computer code are immaterial.

The purpose of an operant conditioning chamber is to study behavior conditioning by teaching a subject (usually an animal) to perform certain actions in response to specific stimuli. When correctly performed, the subject is given a type of award. Occasionally there is punishment for the wrong response.

This is also called a Skinnerbox, as the research method was developed by B. F. Skinner.

The two largest users of this method of behavior modifying reward system are slot machines and MMORPGs.

If you really want your Skinnerbox so bad, it still exists. In every other MMO. Personally, I find it sad that some of you actually want to be treated like an animal by a game company.
