64-bit Client Beta FAQ

Is there a 64-bit Mac client?
Unfortunately, a 64-bit Mac client is not available at this time. We are hoping to be able to provide one in the future, but have no timeline to provide it.

Please don’t make promises like this. Considering the poor working state of the Cider wrapper and the lack of resources/interest on behalf of the dev team, I find it incredibly unlikely that this is even remotely possible. The only stable way to accomplish this would be through the creation of a native client, which ANet has confirmed is not happening. They would need to hire a dedicated Mac team but, as we’ve seen over the last 3 years, there just is not anyone passionate enough about Mac at ANet to convince the core team it is worth their time/resources.

Not saying I blame them, their core audience is on PC so they need to go where the money is, but I would prefer more transparency and less “hoping to” announcements. We’ve been here long enough to know that something like this is going to be incredibly difficult for ANet to find time and/or interest to accomplish.

Anyone have any thoughts to the contrary?

[MAC] Update to this FAQ regarding client?

Hello all,

Used to play the game but left due to performance and technical issues. I decided to check in to see how things were looking and found this FAQ:

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28147936-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-Edition

Was obviously vary confused as it tried to lead me to the now deleted (insert sadness here) Mac forums. I also noticed that the article had not been updated at all since it’s original posting in September of 2012.

Here are some quotes from that FAQ that I would sincerely appreciate an update on from either the technical support team or the development team if possible:

Is Guild Wars 2 offered in a Mac® version?

Yes. Guild Wars 2 is offered in both Windows® and Mac versions. The Mac version is currently in beta. A release version will be available after testing and optimization have been completed.

When will the retail Mac version of Guild Wars 2 be released?

The release date for the Mac version of Guild Wars 2 will be based on the results of tester input.

Again, an update either here or on that FAQ would be most appreciated. Two and a half years is quite a long time to not update something like this. Thanks!

First new CDI topic, how to improve communication between devs and community :p

Would LOVE to see a CDI regarding communication, especially regarding the Mac community. Believe it or not, a few of us are still here and would LOVE to hear from ANet.

Hello? Lacy? Still there? :(

Anyone seen Lacy, the mac tech specialist, around lately? Seems like her last post was about a month ago. I understand that this is only a part of her job but it is pretty disappointing that almost an entire month could go by without her taking any part in this community.

Any hope for GENUINE answers?

Is there any chance that we may ever get a genuine response from an ANet dev as to the overall status of the Mac “beta” client? The obvious question being, “Will we ever make it out of beta? Why or why not?”

We’ve waited almost 2 years now. I am literally begging here, please give us some reason to believe that anything may ever come of this?

Lacey, thank you for your kind words regarding our community. I hope that you understand that our frustration does not stem with you and that we are very thankful that you are offering what time you have.

Unfortunately, that still does not overshadow the fact that almost two years have gone by and ANet has still not dedicated even one person to the cause of supporting this Mac cider client, let alone actually putting in the effort to make an actual Mac client.

I only wish someone from ANet would actually care enough to tell us what went wrong and why they never went forward with making a finished Mac client. It is incredibly frustrating and disappointing.

I will pop in here as time permits to work on organizing the sticky posts a bit as well as answer some of your questions.

If you don’t mind clarifying, does this mean that helping us out is not actually your fulltime job, rather something that you will be doing on the side? If that is the case I would be fairly concerned. We are nearing the 2 year mark of this cider client. It would be great if we could get a dedicated support and development team. It’s the only way we will ever see any real change come to fruition.

I would really appreciate it if you could clarify this point for us. Thank you.

When will GW2 for Mac be out of beta?

Aigisthos.3059

ANet has not currently announced any plans to bring the Mac cider wrapper out of “beta” state. They just hired their first Mac tech specialist about a month ago so we’ll have to see if they make any new announcements but at least for now assume that the client will not make it out of beta until ANet states otherwise.

We have a new tech person on board who is — be still my beating heart — a Mac specialist! So we will be reviewing all stickies and updating them in the near future. Let’s give her a bit of time to get up and running, but we’re on the case!

That is good to hear. Still pretty insane that it took you over a year and a half of this cider client being released to finally hire at least ONE Mac employee but still, it is a nice gesture. I sincerely hope some good comes out it. I’m sure this community would appreciate any small amount of support ANet might be willing to give us.

Honestly BETA

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Aigisthos.3059

Aigisthos.3059

What, exactly, does “beta” software mean to you?

Do you know how long Google’s Gmail was “in beta”? Two years is not “a record of some sort”

It’s common for software to NEVER advance past the beta development stage.

The key difference here being that Google was actively working on Gmail for those two years prior to it’s full release (hence why it was called a beta client) whereas the GW2 Mac client is a cider wrapper of the PC’s native client.

With that in mind, the OP is actual making an incredibly valid point. It is most likely that this client will never be released out of “beta” as ANet has not discussed any interest in developing a native Mac client. On top of that, they only have 1 Mac tech specialist who was only hired a month ago. They label it as a “beta” because they understand that it is underperforming when compared to the PC client and want to avoid anyone feeling as if they were misled into buying the Mac client. (though, ironically enough, it is how most of us end up feeling anyway)

This client is a cider wrapper. That is very different than being in a beta state. I only wish that ANet would have the common decency to appropriately title it as such.

You should open a support ticket chronic and hopefully they will hear you out.

1.) Native Client (or at the very least PLEASE stop calling this cider client a “beta”)
2.) An active engagement from ANet in our community
3.) Better communication
4.) Better customer support (meaning genuine knowledge of our client, no directing back to forums, etc.)
5.) Fixing existing, persistent client bugs (trading post issues, login issues, generally performance issues, etc.)

Promised Update - Highly Disappointed

Aigisthos.3059

Guys…if they promise the update, it will come out in the next days for sure.
In real life, I’m a developer: I code everyday at every hour….and there is a law in te developer’s world: IF YOU PLAN TO FINISH A WORK IN X DAYS, YOU NEED X+1/2 X TO FINISH THAT WORK.

I trust them, so…just wait for the update coming in the next days.

The issue isn’t whether or not they’re still working on it.
The issue is that they haven’t said anything about it. If you say, ‘we will have an update for you later this week’, then people are going to expect it. If you’re still working on it by that time then you need to tell people, otherwise it looks like you’re just ignoring them.

Here you are right. Anyway…let’s wait. Now the client is not that bad.

Dany, they are not updating the client. They had just promised to give us a written update as to the current state of the client. There is no excuse. It would have literally taken them 30 seconds to say, “Hey guys, we’re really sorry but it’s not coming this week.”

As for your mention of coding, as a freelance game composer I can tell you that that is definitely a bad idea. If you know it’s going to take you “x” amount of days and tell them fewer then you are building a poor reputation. Do not let your talent get overshadowed by something like that. If you cannot guarantee a specific day then explain that to your team but never make promises you cannot keep if you want to build good professional relationships. Just my two cents on that. Hope you don’t mind.

OP, you should probably just roll the dice and submit a support ticket. If you get someone that says, "This client is in “beta” so there will be problems" or “We cannot help you. Post on the forums” etc. simply say thank you, close your ticket, and open a new one with the exact same information but a different title. You should get someone willing to help you in 1-3 tickets.

Take a quick glance at that forum. Responses by mods and ANet are extremely rare and even when there is a response it is from the support team responding to support issues, as the thread was originally intended to be used for.

How then are our voices supposed to be heard? Will ANet ever open up a feedback thread for us and our concerns with this “beta” client? I would sincerely appreciate a response.

Before anyone says it, yes I know we are getting these new features as well so it “technically” is a Mac patch.

What I am asking is whether or not we will be receiving any Mac client-specific updates? Seeing all of these new additions to the game would be exciting if I knew it was going to work but instead I’m left paranoid that adding in so many new features at once will bring up HUGE problems for this cider client. Just look at the last several patches! Every time something is added to the game it produces client crashes, drops in fps, and more.

Can we please get someone from ANet to confirm whether or not this patch is being fully and properly tested on the Mac cider client? It would be nice to know that we will be able to enjoy all of these new features. For now though, I am going to have to remain extremely skeptical.

My Proposed Solution

There is only one solution that I have been able to calculate in order to avoid this disastrous outcome: The Arena Net team must finish the Mac beta client as soon as possible.

Here is a bullet points list providing the pros and cons of finishing the client versus not finishing the client:

pros

  • Free ice cream in a world without lactose intolerance! (possibly)
  • An incredibly grateful Mac community!
  • FREE ICE CREAM!!!

cons

  • No ice cream in a world with lactose intolerance. (definitely)
  • A very sad Mac community.
  • No free ice cream.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I hope that you have enjoyed this personal, subjective, thoughtful discussion on the multiverse theory and how it affects the future of Guild Wars 2. There is nothing more that I want in this world than for people everywhere to have access to good, clean ice cream. I implore the team at Arena Net to take the necessary actions to prevent such an ice cream ban catastrophe from happening. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Aigisthos

Argument

The first stage of my argument is to state, in my own subjective opinion, that the word “argument” is too negative to use in such a positive, well mannered thread so I will hereby use the technical term “Personal, subjective, thoughtful discussion” instead, thereby insinuating a more positive and constructive feeling to what was formerly referred to as my “argument.”

Personal, subjective, thoughtful discussion

The Mac beta client was announced on September 18, 2012. It was very well received, in my personal, subjective (but thoughtful!) opinion. Being an open beta client, a stage in development in which the game is not fully completed, it was understandable that there would be problems. The problem with these problems is that they become more of a problem after the problems first addressed as problems become problems involved in other problems that increase in complexity to a problematic set of problems.

In other words, there are problems that have been here since the beginning that are still here. (In my personal, subjective, but thoughtful opinion.) The reason for this, in my personal, subjective, but thoughtful opinion, is that there is no great incentive for the team to be working on the Mac beta client. There is so much work to be done on the game as a whole that it is not often feasible to address the needs of one small subset of the larger community, even if it is the greatest, most awesome, dedicated part of the entire community. (In my personal…..well, you get it already)

How to Address Problematic Problems

I believe that there is only one way to truly address problematic problems of this magnitude: Ice Cream. You might think I’m crazy, which I would respect as your own incredibly valid opinion, but hear me out first.

According to Hugh Everett’s many-worlds interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics, we exist in a universe of astounding possibilities. For example, we view the human bodies need for oxygen in order to survive as an objective, scientific fact. But what if we did not need oxygen to survive? What if there were other possibilities that might have occurred given a change of events at the start of human history that made it so that humans require a steady intake of helium instead? Now imagine that this incredible possibility as well as all other possible possibilities not only happened, but are happening, right now.

Enter THE MULTIVERSE.

Understanding that anything is indeed possible, we come to realize that there is incredible incentive for the team at Arena Net to finish the Mac client and to bring it out of beta.

Enter my favorite universe of the multiverse, EVERYONE WHO FINISHES THE MAC BETA CLIENT GETS FREE ICE CREAM!!!" Universe

Defining the “EVERYONE WHO FINISHES THE MAC BETA CLIENT GETS FREE ICE CREAM!!!” Universe

Now I know what you are thinking, “But Aigisthos! What are on earth are you saying? What kinds of ice cream are we talking about? What if I’m lactose intolerant? What does this have to do with Guild Wars 2?” Do not fret my inquisitive friends for I shall expound about this incredibly exciting universe.

In this possible universe, Hugh Everett would probably state (if he ever actually talked about this) that every person in the entire world LOVED ice cream and that no one was lactose intolerant. This is an incredible universe filled with joy and happiness for all who partake in it. There is only one great tragedy, a restriction placed upon the distribution of ice cream. If you release a game in beta without ever finishing it, your daily rations of ice cream will be withheld until the beta client is released.

Now I know what you are thinking, “But Aigisthos, what if that universe were to collide with ours thus creating a new universe within the multiverse in which this great law applied to the team at Arena Net? Please tell me it is not a possibility that the great team at Arena Net would be banned from the joys of ice cream until they finished this client!?!?!”

Unfortunately my dear friends, that is the harsh reality we live in. If Arena Net is not able to finish this client and release it out beta before we possibly collide with another universe in which ice cream is withheld from game teams that do not finish their beta clients, the team would forever be doomed to a life without the joys of ice cream.

Hello dear citizens of Tyria,

I am here on this wonderful day to provide some of my personal (constructive!) feedback on the Mac beta client of Guild Wars 2, utilizing the guidelines provided in this incredibly important forum topic:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/How-to-Give-Good-Feedback/first#post3383470

To begin, I must first clarify my argument using some well-prepared bullet points!

  1. The opinions stated in this argument are just that, my own subjective opinions.
  2. I will attempt to reinforce my subjective argument by utilizing Hugh Everett’s many-worlds interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics.
  3. Yes, I really am going to use Hugh Everett’s many-worlds interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics.
  4. I will do my best to use bullet points as much as possible since they are an excellent way to provide good feedback! (As stated in the “How to Give Good Feedback” thread. Link provided above)
  5. As also stated in the “How to Give Good Feedback” thread, “Sarcasm in text is never sarcastic.” so please, read all points made in this thread as literal. (literally)

Now, on to the argument!

It’s people like you that make the forums such a hostile, unwelcome place for our community. Why can’t you be supportive of us? It’s bad enough that ANet barely supports our client and restricts all of our posts to the Mac beta “support” thread. We don’t need any more added negativity. It’s frustrating to me that comments such as these are allowed by the forum moderators.

Evan, hopefully you get to see this, but thank you for your support. It means a lot to have someone at ANet say something in support of our client. I sincerely appreciate it. If only there were more people like you at ANet, we may not have been doomed to this endless “beta” we are in.

Please don’t read that the wrong way. That means we don’t have a team for each discipline, but that anyone on our team may work on either. This is a good thing, as far as I can see.

Do you see all of the forum traffic since the last update from the devs and the forum moderators doing their best to help all of the PC players with all of their issues? We’re not getting any of that and that is a problem.

Can you give us an update, any update at all, as to whether or not any of the issues that have arisen in the most recent patch (most of which are old problems that have simply come back) are being worked on?

Really frustrating that ANet is so quiet after you making all of these claims about them caring about the Mac players and that they have “big things” in store for us in 2014. So far it’s been nothing but business as usual.

why call it ‘beta’ if no final version?
“beta version (plural beta versions)
(computing, technology) A development status given to a program or application that contains most of the major features, but is not yet complete. Sometimes these versions are released only to a select group of people, or to the general public. The testers are usually expected to report any bugs they encounter or any changes they’d like to see before the final release. This is the second major stage of development following the alpha version, and comes before the release candidate.”
‘beta’ is final bug/other testing by an open/closed player base before the final full release. If there will be no full release, it wouldn’t be a ‘beta’ – it would be the final release.

A fantastic point that ANet will sadly never comment on lest they dare to admit they have been falsely advertising a product for over a year.

Was definitely considering it a happy accident, not just because it wasn’t in the patch notes but because it took you guys three days to update us here on the forums that this was a legitimate update.

If you want to change the attitude of this community then you guys need to stop treating us like second class citizens. Just in case anyone reads my post the wrong way, I want to come out and say that I have the utmost respect for the PC team and for all the incredible work that they do. The problem simply is that no matter how much I may like oranges, if you’re going to grow an apple tree you need an apple seed. (see what I did there?)

Experience and specialization needs to be acknowledged as a necessity in this regard, not an after-thought. It’s not as easy as “Hey, you made GW2 for the PC so SURELY you can make it for Mac right?” It just simply does not work that way.

Nurse: “So we know you’re having open heart surgery today but the only guy we could find was a brain surgeon who has never done open heart surgery in his entire life but he’s like REALLY smart so we’re pretty sure he can figure it out.”

(see the problem?)

Just because you can code on a PC does not mean you can code on a Mac and vice versa. It is most certainly NOT a good thing that ArenaNet has not hired a team that is experienced and specialized in developing for the Mac. In fact it is actually quite alarming that you would brag about such a fallacy. Our concerns in this regard are extremely valid.

ps You want to know why Blizzard is able to release working clients for both the Mac and the PC for all of their games? They understand and value the importance of specialization and have a dedicated team for each client. (hint hint: I’m trying to convince you that you guys need a Mac team if this is ever going to work)

We don’t have a “PC Team” and a “Mac Team.” So it’s not possible to give you names of people working on the Mac improvements. Basically, development is handled by the team as a whole, with several people picking up or providing input on various parts of a particular project. If we can flag names in the future, we’ll do it.

Darn, I guess this means we will still not be getting native support. I was still holding out that the exciting updates you keep mentioning that are coming could mean that we would finally have an actual client….

All Mac improvements have and will have a thorough QA pass. If something creeps up after release, there can be a dozen different reasons why that happened. But testing is done and with every issue, we learn things that help us prevent future issues. (Nothing will ever be flawless, but each fix is both a fix and an education, if that makes sense.)

I completely understand that you would QA the Mac patches but what we were asking is that you test the PC patches, such as this last optimization patch, on the Mac. Because you guys use a cider client, everything you change on the PC affects us. If the patch had had even a minimal QA pass, let alone the type of “thorough QA pass” you are referencing, this huge mess would have been avoided. We would really appreciate it if the team would take the time to do that.

I will do that. They sit near me, and it’s nice to see them busy at work on stuff that you guys want and need.

Thank you for the update Gaile. Very glad to hear that this is being addressed. We sincerely appreciate it.

Any chance we will ever know who the mystical “they” are? lol. Seriously though, would be great if we could develop an actual relationship with the devs who work on this client, much like the PC team does.

Also, any chance patches will be QA tested on the Mac client in the future to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again? Considering it is across the board it just seems odd that something this huge fell through the cracks. Thanks!

Remember last year when Ashley started posting that “I’m working to get more info. Good things coming! I’ll keep you guys posted.” and then she disappeared from the Mac forums and none of our concerns were addressed?

Oh, or how about the time when Luis started posting that “I’m working to get more info. Good things coming! I’ll keep you guys posted.” and then he disappeared from the Mac forums and none of our concerns were addressed?

Well, now we have Gaile posting here. I certainly feel she has the best intentions at heart, just as Ashley and Luis did, but we have to face the harsh reality that with their current track record there is no reason to believe that this issue, or any other Mac issues, will be addressed anytime soon if they are at all.

We’re in “beta”, remember? lol

Sent a PM to Gaile to see if this might be a possibility or at least to get some visibility to this post. Her response, “Sorry, that’s not my area of expertise.”

Feel the love everybody, feel the love….

I can assure you that the company truly does care about Mac players. Devs are working on Mac issues, not casually, but with genuine purpose. You’ll see this in the future, but please be assured that Mac is on the team’s radar and an important part of future updates and fixes.

Gaile, I hate to be rude but actions speak louder than words. Our concerns are very valid considering ArenaNets track record over the last year and a half. They are never involved in the Mac forums, they have not given us any updates on the state of the client apart from Izzy telling us that it is not a priority. If they do truly care about the Mac players then they need to show it.

Hey guys – I know you all really, really, want an update. I’m still in the process of collecting a lot of data in regards to known issues and whatnot and forwarding this all to the appropriate “Mac guys/gals” but at this time I really don’t have any new information to provide. The second I hear something I will be sure to let you all know!

Wow, well over a year since the last update to this client and yet this is the best we have, the second time in 9 months that we have been promised “The second I hear something I will be sure to let you all know!” from the same mod. Actions speak a lot louder than words. Incredibly disappointing that this has been allowed to go on so long.

Also, please note that the devs are working on a more permanent fix with less hoop-jumping.

Gaile, I’m assuming this will not be addressed until the next “features update” (aka 8 weeks from today) considering what Colin said in his 2014 post regarding finishing up the Living World story line. Can you confirm this?
