Its not just you, norns and char skulls are so far up (especially if you’re a particularly tall character) its impossible for you to see.
I actually ran into this bug yesterday. Since there were several ideas on what was causign the bug and how to avoid it I tried it all. Restarted client, let my minions kill most things after bringing them to about 25%, avoided condi (died several times cuz the stupid chakra hit like a freaking truck), stood on Taimi, killed both golems at the same time, killed turrets and well one of of the above worked cuz she didn’t bug again.
Pet survivability is rarely an issue.
As for PvE I agree that pet survivability is rarely an issue (at least in my case), but I’ve seen many many many rangers with poor pet management
curious: when is it an issue, and what “management” do you use when the boss is able to nuke your pet?
Depends on the fight. I mostly use drakes because they aoe a lot of crap, do a decent amount of damage and are super awesome tanks especially for higher level fractals (30+). I find it makes it a lot easier on the group if you have a npc tanking the boss instead of a player and if I switch them out before they get low its 15 seconds for a perma tank.
In other pve dungeons where we have a good group comp or if its an easy dungeon like CoF p1 I use linx/jaguar/devourer .
I’ve also used other pets for other situations for example, spiders I use for shaman fractal, canines for spvp, moas on rare occasions for a little extra healing or extra buff, pigs for soloing Arah, etc.
I agree, test golems aren’t really good tests for dps nor is using a stop watch really because theres always going to be a delay when I start and stop. I would love to have a dps meter so I can compare my dps to other classes, but that is probably never going to happen. I can also understand why we don’t have dps meters since its supposed to be a “play how you want” game yet we constantly have updates that is a dps race (Wurm, Tequatl, time limit on world bosses).
As for PvE I agree that pet survivability is rarely an issue (at least in my case), but I’ve seen many many many rangers with poor pet management, or just opt for a brown bear cuz its more tanky.
Yay a response!
Regarding builds: I had considered doing 30/30/10/0/0 or something similar but with the zerker and ferocity nerf that will happen soon I figured I’d get some straight damage builds. The points in wilderness survival was for the shortened longbow CD (I assumed this would be a trait that LB rangers get). When I have some time I can go back and try the 30/30/10/0/0 see if I get better dps.
As for the BM spec, I might lose dps with it but my tests show that I didn’t as long as I keep switching between weapons for range. The other advantage from running a similar BM spec is that my drakes tank extremely well in dungeons when needed (you have no idea how easy this makes the Molten fight in fractals) with a few swaps of slotted traits to signets.
I didn’t bother with the devourer because I KNOW they’re good ranged dps =) Its my second pet choice that I switch to (Drake/Jag being the first ).
Sooooo lately I’ve been kind of curious about how much dps I do and which build might be better. I ran some basic dps tests involving a few different pets/builds/weapons. I tested it in the mists area using 3 tests and my phones stop watch app (obviously more tests would get a more accurate reading but what I have already took a good chunk of my time). I first tested Runes of the Ranger vs Rune of the Scholar, both weapons were LB and Axe/Horn and the difference between BM and a bow / crit. I even decided to test the Arcdus which has the only straight damage F2 ability of the bears. Here are my findings:
BM 15/0/25/0/30
Advantages: 20% extra dmg with health/stam full (taking the 10% dmg trait in Marks), Pets don’t die as fast.
Rune of the Ranger:
Starting with axe/horn switching to LB then switching back with Quickening Zephyr, Sic ’em, and Rampage as One. Using Jaguar.
Test 1 : 6.7 seconds
Test 2: 6.6 seconds
Test 3: 8 seconds
Without the “burst” slot skills (QZ, Sic’em and RaO)
T1: 14 seconds
T2: 13 seconds
T3: 14 seconds
Sword/Horn with QZ, Sic’Em, RaO using Jaguar
T1: 6.9 seconds
T2: 6.7 seconds
T3: 6.7 seconds
Without
T1: 12 seconds
T2: 11 seconds
T3: 11 seconds
Disclaimer: In longer fights the sword/horn will win since theres a 6 second cd left when I switch back to Axe/Horn.
Rune of the Scholar
Axe/Horn and LB with burst using Jaguar
T1: 6.7 seconds
T2: 7.3 seconds
T3: 6.7 seconds

T3: 6.2 seconds
Without burst:
T1: 10 seconds
T2: 9 seconds
T3: 9 seconds
Build 25/20/25/0/0
(non BM spec ranged only since we’ve already established sword/horn does more damage)
Advantages: 20% damage with health/stam full, more crit/power.
Rune of the Scholar (does slightly more dps and you don’t have to worry about an active pet)
Tested with LB using QZ, Sic’Em, RaO and Jaguar
T1: 8 seconds
T2: 7 seconds
T3: 8 seconds
Without Burst:
T1: 12 secs

Okay now I did stuff with pets only (no skills from me):
Jaguar BM (doesn’t matter if you use stealth or not the time was still the same if not a second less due to cast time and repositioning)
T1: 25 seconds
T2: 25 seconds
T3: 24 seconds
Non BM:
T1: 35 seconds
T2: 32 seconds
T3: 35 seconds
Jungle Stalker BM without F2:
T1: 24 seconds
T2: 25 seconds
T3: 23 seconds
With F2(cast time makes it lose dps):
T1: 26 seconds
T2: 27 seconds
T3: 27 seconds
Linx BM with F2:
T1: 24 seconds
T2: 21 seconds
T3: 23 seconds
Arctodus Non BM with F2:
T1: 14 seconds
T2: 13 seconds
T3: 15 seconds
Drake (more tanky imo less annoying to everyone else) Non BM with F2:
T1: 13 seconds
T2: 11 seconds
T3: 12 seconds
*Disclaimer: Due to buggy pet AI (especially with Lynx) you’ll have a hard time hitting the F2 ability on a moving target
Hawk BM with F2:
T1: 26 seconds
T2: 30 seconds
T3: 28 seconds
*Disclaimer: The birds INSIST on using Quickening Screech which is stupid and the cast time makes them lose dps, without this ability the birds could be the best dps with their base damage and short F2 ability time.
My DPS (with the first build: 15/0/25/0/30)
Sword/horn and without burst
T1: 15 seconds
T2: 15 seconds
T3: 16 seconds
In closing: I believe that BM would in theory be more dps since the pets have 300 more attributes then a non BM build the BM pets would be more likely to survive longer then any other build. As you can see with the basic dps runs the pets do a good chunk of dps regardless of which build you’re running. In the Jaguar’s case the only difference between the two dps builds is 10 seconds. In a real fight the BM jaguar would survive longer with its better health/toughness. Also, since most rangers I see run bear shudder I would be doing more dps with them even at range if I used a cat, bird or even drake (but only slightly unless there is multiple targets to hit).
I’d be interested to hear other people’s thoughts to these findings. I was pretty surprised myself with a few of these tests (ie I assumed SB dps wasn’t comparable to LB dps).
If you’re guesting to a server its so only people from home can get in through overflow while guesters either get the error or are punted to a lesser overflow. Best solution is to have a buddy in main to ferry you in or get there way early.
Yeah every time I open my inv it pops at random sizes. Even if I change the size to the way I want it, it doesn’t stick.
I vaguely remember there being one a long time ago. I never joined it due to my guilds rep policies and I’m not sure if they are still around
this happened to me too
BG natives vs guests? No one who was there last night, or who had been there consistently over the past week, would ever think of it in such a black and white perspective. Yes, BG was the server it was killed on. If people chose to guest over then that is fine but it doesn’t change the fact that the kill was on BG.
You think we turn away people because they aren’t native to the server? The wurm is a World boss, not a servers boss. People chose Blackgate, because contrary to what everyone says about BG for the lulz, it’s a wonderful server full of dedicated people within the community.
Most guesting had the opposite to say about their own servers so it’s easy to hate on this server if you are not from here and couldn’t be a part of any of it. I’ve read many posts complaining about how this encounter is too difficult for the average server and I am in agreement.
This is even true for BG to an extent. After our kill we made another attempt for fun but failed. Everyone was pretty ecstatic over our original kill, we barely even set back up for the next one. After we failed the next attempt, most decided to call it for the night. However, I came back for the next run. Not only was it an awful attempt, the map chat was extremely vile. Seeing as how I had left the zone for an hour and came back without hitting overflow, I knew the run wouldn’t be successful.
My point is, the boss was downed on BG but it took everyone to make it happen. This includes commanders leading and people respectfully listening, where you are from isn’t of any concern. The problem is most full zones will never achieve that type of coordination. It really is a shame because it’s worth it to me but it’s not to everyone.
Anyways, thanks again to all of those who made this happen. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect people to come crashing in here to nit pick…
I completely agree. I would have loved to have the kill on my own server but there was not enough dedication to it even if we have the numbers being a high population server.
I want to point out that I would like to stay and kill it a few more times and be apart of the testing to come up with a solid strategy for this fight. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot of familiar faces tonight. o7
Haha yeah I was guesting too from SoR. BG is the only server that really had the dedication and coordination required for this kill.
:) I still feel like this should have been instanced. It was nice getting that raiding feeling again. I just wish we had done it on my own server.

Compared to what I get with doing 1.5 other world bosses its worth it *to me, plus I don’t have to switch characters to get the cyphers.
Tequatl is the only boss that would trump this boss in time spent vs reward gained. Plus you have less chance to fail Tequatl with sub par pugs as long as your defense doesn’t fall and you have enough dps to carry though the burn phases.
Yes dungeons are more rewarding compared to this boss since you get a guaranteed gold where as marionette depends on rng, but for open world content its decent as long as you get good drops on the cypher and your group doesn’t fail.
What it really comes down to is “Whelp, I got my achievements so I’m done”.
Marionette was fun, but only when your group didn’t fail. You shouldn’t have to rely on players being good at what they do, because you’ll always have the people that for whatever reason aren’t good enough for the encounter. If it wasn’t for that detail I might be farming Marionette since the rewards are good.
Wurm was different. It was too hard for world content imo. What if you recently bought the game, leveled up to 55 and wanted to do the zone content in that zone ? Then find out that you needed to be level 80, with a specific gear set, with a specific spec. Its not fair for OPEN world content. If you want a raid content then make a raid instance. It reminds me of vanilla wow where I wanted to play a feral druid but couldn’t because druids for Molten Core were Resto only. I do not want to relive that particular era.
I also wanted to point out that I have done Tribulation mode in SAB and managed to kill Liadri so I am not a “casual” player. The only difference between those two instances and this new content is… I only had to rely on MY skills to complete it and not have to rely on other peoples skills.
I had the same bug. Killed marionette, skipped cut scene cheered like 5 times when everyone else was doing it and got nothing.
Soo no one has a fix for this ? I tried the re-que thing and still got the same error.
Okay so today I decided to join a level 37 fractal. Everything was fine until we hit that Molten Faculty fractal. Basically we did have some trouble trying to coordinate and people dying to massive amounts of agony no biggy, but after a couple of wipes when we would hit “retry from checkpoint” it would port us ON the platform with the bosses and wipe the group again. Eventually we did succeed but still, I don’t think that putting the entire party on the platform right as we res was intended (correct me if I’m wrong).
Another bug that I found was that in the same instance I had 35 AR. I have 50 AR but it was showing that I had 35 of it. I was super confused because I double checked my gear and I had all my infused items, all my accessories, back piece and neck piece equipped with resistances. All my ascended weapons were equipped with the agony resist in them.
Once I left the group I instantly had 50 AR again…
I wanted to add my 2 cents.
First I agree with the OP
Second I too have the lfg tool beta and have not yet tested it because I’m too busy trying to get the achievements for Tequatl as I’m sure many are.
If I could give it up for people who aren’t farming Tequatl I would.
Edit: Finally got the achievements done
LFG Tool here I come
(edited by Arashiookami.2896)
I couldn’t agree more.
But, you know, this thread was just a few posts down on the front page when you created this new thread:
It really would be more helpful (in terms of dev attention) if we all supported the same thread.
Yeah sorry I should have posted in the same thread. I didn’t think to look for a similar suggestion.
Seriously. If you crash or DC you should still have your spot on the main server especially for events like Tequatl Rising. My server just downed Teq again and I couldn’t get back in even though I was joining on my party as soon as the game loaded (for four minutes) because the server was “full”.
Suggestion:
You should at least have a certain time like I don’t know, 2 minutes or something, to load back into the game before the server kicks you.
Alternatively if you get kicked for whatever reason you should still have access to the rewards.
Other Thoughts:
This wouldn’t be a problem if Teq wasn’t as hard or didn’t require as much coordination or wasn’t on a time limit. I could just get it any other time with ecto farmers, but as of now its annoying.
What did you get as a reward?
A rare and 100 Dragonite Ore.
If this is true it just confirms my prior theory that its way too much work for little reward.
Ah well the patch seemed to have fixed it. I have no idea what was wrong but as long as its fixed I’m happy.
Thanks for the replies!
This started yesterday and I thought it was ended yesterday when I found a solution but apparently it was just temporary.
Basically the problem is it won’t let me see or type in guild chat and claims I am not in a guild even though I clearly am. I tried standing down and representing which didn’t work. Finally towards the end of the day yesterday I decided to try leaving the guild and being re-invited. It worked but logging in today I still have the same issue.
I haven’t seen a post about this in a while so I decided to make one in the hopes that it can maybe be fixed.
Attached are screenshots from today.
Character Name: Ashanti Mhalkeir
Server: Sanctum of Rall
Guild Name: Sinister Swarm [SIN]
Problem: It tells me I’m not in a guild when clearly I am. I can’t post or see guild chat. I’ve tried standing down and representing again. Nothing works.
Additional Information: I was not guesting. I was on my home server.
Fixed: I had to leave the guild and be re-invited to fix this.

Hit me up in game. I would love to try this and I’m always up for the challenge. If I’m not in game send me an in game mail.
No I’m not trolling. I’m being serious. The only thing I’ve been seeing on these forums is a bunch of QQers and rarely do I see anything constructive or positive. So here it goes:
I for one am HAPPY about the patch notes. I mean at least we GOT things. Maybe this makes me the 1%.
I’m very pleased with the AR for pets (I finally got to test this in a fractal last night and didn’t have to switch my pet nearly as often as I usually do), I’m happy for the increased greatsword dps (not as good as sword/axe but the greatsword is more of tanky melee weapon imo), Drake no longer heals enemies, Cats do extra crit damage (more dps for my bm build), and supposedly they fixed the pet rez bug – I haven’t actually gotten to test this to see if its really un-bugged.
As for the quickness things its not like everyone got nerfed or anything. I still use Quickening Zephyr, with the pet swap quickness which I can do every 15 seconds.
There you have it Anet, at least one of your rangers isn’t complaining.
The quickness nerf hit power rangers very hard (harder than most, if not all other classes because of the heavy reliance on it from pet swap and QZ to keep ranger DPS on a level comparable to other classes). The class often underperformed in a DPS role (the only viable one, their support skills are terrible and control is either unecessary or equally done by other classes with additional options) before the nerf, it is even worse with it.
The addition of AR was more of a bug than an improvement. The dungeon shouldn’t have made it to launch without giving pets AR, that shows how little consideration and critical thinking goes into content and how it impacts on the ranger (and primarily the pet – the fact dungeon content is balanced around dodge roll which pets can’t do is a prime example of this). Giving pets AR is more like a bug fix than it is a buff.
Drakes no longer heal enemies? It’s hilarious that it ever happened – not only to pets often let you down, they actively helped your enemy. The details of the cat DPS and crit changes seemed to me more like they were trading base damage for crits (or something in that ballpark). Last I heard it wasn’t a DPS increase or decrease, it was just shuffling numbers around (and fixing a bug introduced in a prior patch).
Pet res is still bugged. Since launch one of our most important downed skills doesn’t work (it’s also a utility skill) and even after the “fix” – it still doesn’t work.
Finally you missed one of the biggest nerfs in this patch. Pet skills will no longer refresh their cooldowns when swapped in and out of combat. I don’t think I read a single post (seriously, not a single post) complaining pets were OP and they could use their F2 skills too often (I’m not saying they don’t exist, I just never saw people call it out as a balance problem let alone have people complain about it like culling stealth or the power level of D/D builds). Not once did I ever see anyone say it was a problem and the class was negatively impacting the play experiences of others by being able to use the crappy F2 skills every time they swapped pets instead of waiting out their cooldowns. I never saw someone complain about how OP pet skills were or how effective pets were (aside from some underwater complaints) and in fact the seemingly majority opinion was that pets generally suck or under perform and are often close to useless. So what do they do? Make them worse by having cooldowns persist between pet swaps.
The ranger patch notes confuse me as much as they make me sad. I see a lot of problems with the class (despite all the good things about it) and I see a PvE meta where the class is becoming less and less popular yet I keep seeing big nerfs (crossfire, quickness, pet skill cooldowns) and necessary changes that aren’t being made. Pets and support options desperately need to be addressed and they aren’t. So as happy as you are with your bug fixes (some of them weren’t even fixed) and your minor buff on a still weak weapon, these aren’t the changes the class needs, in fact, this patch hurt the class more than it helped.
And even with the quickness nerf I still use Quickening Zephyr. The only time I switch that and Sick ’Em out is when I want to “tank” which is super fun imo. I even have my Steve right next to me giving me a healing Aura and Protection every so often.
:D Statement still stands. I love rangers and I’m still happy with the patch notes. Its only made my ranger better for PvE (example: greatsword, AR, pet rez bug fix).
I love where this discussion is going ! I also love my evades. I’ve actually learned a lot just from playing my ranger, especially how to dodge.
Yes I do play mostly PvE and my guild specifically brings me to instances because I’m the last to fall if I fall at all. Most likely I finish the encounter and end up rezzing them. I admit I don’t play as much wvw as I should and I haven’t been in spvp in a while. The only reason I’m not in wvw is because I don’t like the invisible enemies that reappear on top of me (ie that culling feature gw2 has where it only renders x amount of people on your screen).
From what spvp I played I loved my survivability when my pet did my damage. All I had to do was keep my opponent in melee range and if they were ranged pull out my spider or devourer. Thieves couldn’t even bring me down 1v1 although I couldn’t really bring them down either but hey at least they didn’t get a kill.
Put on your flame suit!
It’s gonna be a hot thread! XD
Also, you’re not alone :P I like the patch. Wanted more, but I’ll take what I can get :P
Lol I have it on and I’ve reinforced it. Lets hope it holds up!
I agree. It would have been nice to get more

It’s possible and I’ve done it as well. Twice. But, I’m not giving out information that could potentially get us nerfed.
I considered that especially if any were able to solo Lupicus, but then again a warrior and rogue have solo’d that same boss and so far they have not gotten any nerfs (especially the warriors). Mind you I died a LOT especially in the positioning with the first boss. For some reason the two bosses didn’t reset and I don’t recall getting a poison AoE which I find confusing and I’m not quite sure how I got the hunter to not throw it down. It must of bugged in the many times that I was trying. – I also want to point out that a class with a shield or any number of blocks doesn’t need a pet to take aggro on the hunter as you can just block the crushers attack. The fight itself is ridiculously easy.
As for the second boss – don’t stand in red circles and you can LoS the leech health thing he does which (aside from the circles) is the most damaging attack.
I haven’t solo’d Arah since I took those screenshots. I just wanted to see if the “underpowered” ranger could do it.
I’m glad other Rangers are doing it to ! I was soloing Arah Path 3 and as soon as I figure out a solid way to solo Lupicus I’m going to try and make a video of it.

I did have some trouble positioning the first boss, but once I got it locked down it was easy and I could do it in berserker gear.
I want to also thank Robert for taking an active part in this discussion. I think that thats so cool to have someone representing Rangers and taking our ideas into consideration. Just remember other gaming companies won’t do that!
I don’t know if its been mentioned (I’ve been trying to keep up with this thread) but is it possible to maybe have pets rez like players do on kills ? I’m not sure how “game breaking” that would be. Or maybe have a decreased CD for the swap? Or a special pet rez that you have to put on your skill bar or trait into?
I also wanted to add that I’m looking forward to seeing how anet changes pet mechanics! Especially since I run a Beastmastery spec (I absolutely love pets and having them do more damage then I do doesn’t bother me one bit). I’m a firm believer that any changes at this point will only make pets better!
(edited by Arashiookami.2896)
I run sword/axe and sword/horn in several dungeons. I don’t go down often and on occation I find myself soloing trash mobs or bosses when my party members go down. I also run full berserker (except for exotic back and earrings which I will replace as soon as I get the ascended stuff). Like all classes there’s a time and place to use melee and a time and place to use ranged. I carry two axes, two swords, a greatsword, shortbow, longbow, and horn because I use all of them for various situations. I also carry a separate set of power/vit/toughness gear in case theres not enough melee in the party to give me some support (i.e heals and defense buffs) in melee.
I never melee lupicus because its easier to kite him around with axe/horn and shortbow. I don’t even have melee pets for that fight.
I’m surprised no one mentioned these names which I found on NPC’s and are by far my favorites:
Princess Pretty Face (cat in queensdale) – I had to name my great white shark that.
Baron Von Scrufflebutt (golem you kill in fractals) – I always feel bad killing him.
Character/Pet Names :
Yogi Dabeir – Friends Norn Guardian – I often name my bears after him.
Battlemuffin – Pink Moa (yes mine but I like him)
Steve – Blue moa – I don’t know why but for some reason I found this funny.
Alex Dumbface – Ice Drake (I put this on in reference to my fiance)
See there’s your problem there is no “Optimal” or “Best” build. Its about what you like. If you like melee find which talents go well for whatever weapon you like. If you want a ranged weapon then find talents that support your ranged weapon. If you want to have your pet do most of your damage find talents that support your pet.
Also if you can’t micromanage your pet then roll another class because your pet REGARDLESS of spec does a good chunk of your damage and a dead pet is a useless pet.
I felt the need to post here as I love to do dungeons and first let me start by saying I like the challenge of dungeons. HOWEVER I feel that unless there are 5 of me playing its less enjoyable because not everyone has the same skill level and I dislike having to spend 5-6 hours on one path trying to figure out what was wrong (or who wasn’t doing their job).
I also feel that the dungeons are WAY too hard if you want to do them at the recommended level. For example. I ran an AC story pug group yesterday (1-30-2012) on my level 30 warrior who had the best gear for her level. It was a extremely frustrating because I had to range everything down or get two-shotted. It was a VAST difference in damage compared to when I was questing and that was with equipping all my damage mitigation moves. Veterans in the world could barely do any damage to me but one silver can take me out in two shots with me using my heal? There’s something wrong with that. I remember we ran with 3 warriors (including myself) one at level 31 and one at 80 and a clothy class that was maybe level 65. We barely made it through the trash mobs. I had wanted to run AC exp (if any group would accept a level 35) but after that I knew there was no way I was going to be effective unless I was level 80 and had full exotics.
I think that there should be dungeon difficulty levels (similar to how fractals is). The harder the dungeon the more rewarding it should be. PuGs while interesting at times can be very frustrating and unforgiving if you get a bad group, its why I’m VERY hesitant to run a dungeon without a full (or nearly full) guild group as we have vent communication and work better together since most of us run dungeons with each other constantly.
I would also like to see a dungeon finder system implemented (no it wouldn’t ruin the community. Most of us use gw2lfg.com anyway) If there was an in game dungeon group finder I’d be more likely to pug since it cuts down the time looking for groups myself or waiting until I can get in one. Or mulling over the fact that I might get a bad pug. I’m an impulsive creature so if I can get into a group instantly I’m less likely to wait for a guild group as that may take some time. I would assume any dungeon finder would be quick as you wouldn’t need to find tanks/heals.
