The following teams (as identified by their ESL names) have qualified for participation in the final Go4 Monthly. You should receive information on how to RSVP for the event sometime early tomorrow. If you do not receive an email for some reason please feel free to reach out to us via a ticket or reply to this thread and I can try my best to assist. The teams in this list must RSVP by this Sunday or they will risk loosing their spot in the event.

  • The Abjured
  • Team Faded
  • Apex Prime
  • Radioactive
  • Spoookie
  • Beach Boys
  • ASAP Zerg
  • You Back In Time!

Teams outside of the top 8 will be invited after this Sunday, so if you did not make the top 8 but at least managed to earn some points there is a good chance you can still get involved in the monthly. Feel free to post any additional questions about the monthly in North America here.

I was recruiting for pug quest this last weekend. While I enjoy the format and the competition, I believe there is a lot of room to improve it.
At this point, we have to start thinking of a legitimate algorithm to garner player skill.

First, there are several players in pugquest that are esl, AG level, and there are many that are not there. This can make for some crazy imbalance skill level teams.

Second, team formation is done by players…players of this game. While I would love to believe there is no bias, I think there needs to be some publication of the team formation methodology to lower the chances of players crying foul.

Third, map choices are huge. If you are having a “entry level” conquest tournament, why is the deathmatch board even a part of the rotation?? You want people to hopefully transition to bigger stages and you are playing maps that do not contribute to that progress.

Fourth, There should just be more publicity about the event overall closer to Friday and Saturday. I spent maybe 30 minutes in the mist talking to folks and got about 5-8 people to sign up for the tournament in that time frame. Most people just didn’t know what it was or it was happening.

Fifth, like AG, I think there needs to be some sort of winners removal from the tournament for a week. While the same teams are obviously not performing together each week, the point is for fun competition. This is a debatable point I believe because 1 person should in theory not carry the conquest team, but I have seen sometimes that it is possible.

I own the Aspect domain and org and do management when they need me to although I try not to get too involved in pugquest, I can probably answer a couple of your questions.

4) The event is run by just a few volunteers and this game doesnt have the audience behind it to justify putting monetary or manpower assets into advertising a 3rd party pvp event. If the volunteers want to advertise it they can but I wont force them to do anything while they’re working for free.

2) Tournament is mainly aimed at fun, not high tier competition. I can assure you there would be very little reason to load teams so friends of friends or w/e could win as the aim of the tournament is not the prize but giving solo players an opportunity to potentially build teams/learn how to play as a team as MM is horrible at doing this.

1) see above

5) Unfortunately I dont agree with doing this. Excluding anyone from a “fun” event makes you the fun police, and they arent very fun.

The following teams have accrued enough points in the month of September to be invited to the monthly. The following teams have been contacted via emails linked to their ESL accounts. If these teams are interested in playing they MUST reply to that email or if for some reason you have not received it you must open a support ticket telling us you would like to play. The deadline for securing your spot is this Sunday (the 11th) at 11:59PM Pacific Time. Information such as date and times of the event itself is included within this email. If these teams have further questions about the event they may contact us directly through a support ticket.

  • The Abjured
  • Spoookie
  • Radioactive
  • Team Faded
  • The Pug Life
  • Dubai World
  • Mental Asylum
  • E Dream

The rest of the teams included below did not secure enough points to secure a direct invite but may still be invited if teams within the top eight do not respond. Members of these teams should keep an eye out for an email from myself or someone else with ESL next Monday (the 12th) for information on if they have been invited. It should be noted that these invites will be secured to the first to respond, so it would be wise to figure out if your team can play now so you don’t have to wait and potentially risk losing a spot to someone snagging it before you.

  • Theory of Relativity
  • Comatose

Hey again guys, just had a chat with some of the other admins. The rule we have set in our GW2 events is mainly to circumvent EU participation in NA and vice versa, not disallow SA/Brazilian players from participating. Brazilian and other South American players should not have issues participating in future events from this point forward as “NA players” via our rules.

The problem that occurred last weekend should no longer occur in the future so long as teams have 3/5 representatives from NA/SA when they initially sign up. Apologies on my part for the problems that may have been caused by this confusion last weekend, and we hope to see you guys participating this Sunday.

This is why GW2 Tournaments are a joke. Too many restrictions, with age included, preventing teams from playing.

Major tournis in other games (like with Fighting games ) don’t have these ridiculous restrictions that favor specific teams.

(Leaving this reply personally, not as a representative for ESL)

FGC is extremely informal in it’s handling overall, and most events are LAN events, which helps to make having more people involved easier.

Online events in a more formal setting have a few more things to worry about which explain age/country limitations. Taxes, intellectual property laws, and other regulation can make delivering prizing or having underaged (or even of age depending on the country) participants from a certain country involved extremely complicated and could leave the organization running the event liable to suit or possibly being shut down completely, this is why you often see these problems from my personal experience.

Good afternoon everyone,

The guy quoted is me. First of all, I understand the current rules of ESL which express totally exclusion of South america players, that has a HUGE community on this game, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, etc, who also is a great potential for expansion in the market Guild Wars 2 and Guild Wars 2 Hearth of Thorns. Arena Net did a BIG step forward allowing this game F2P, that means NEW PLAYERS across the world into the game aiming “test the game and opine yourself”.

There are large dealers companies such as Level Up Games Brazil, selling Guild Wars 1 and 2 (the original game) which is also a distributor and organizer of events of other big names such as Smite, Crossfire. Other companies highly reputed in South American eSport are Blizzard (Hearthstone, Heroes Of The Storm) and VALVE (CS: GO), and other games like DOTA, Starcraft, World Of Tanks, FIFA 15, etc.

As the ESL organizers and Staffs own may know, many games are integrated as America (South America, North America, Central America, excluding Cuba because of restricted laws).
Sources: http://play.eslgaming.com/heroesofthestorm/americas/heroes/open/league/summer-2015/rankings/

http://play.eslgaming.com/hearthstone/americas/hearthstone/open/1on1-conquest-sunday-6-brazil/
http://play.eslgaming.com/brazil

I see no visible barrier to exclude South American Go4Gw2 of tournaments, since the Guild Wars 2 is a game OPEN, FREE and HANDY the WORLDWIDE.

There are SEVERAL teams looking for eSports in GW2 to make it really competitive, and this could attract even more (eg the recent sponsorship of Team Pozi – Celerius eSports).

What are the procedures necessary for that possible inclusion?

I wish get an answer of ESL staffs and also the positioning of Arena Net in this matter,
Thank you.

- Nicked.

Ill check with the higher admins on this, I am following the rules listed on our site at the moment, which requires teams to be 3/5 from the region the tournament is being hosted in. In regards to the Americans playing on EU events, that is at the discretion of the EU admin squad, of which I am not a part of, which is why i did not comment on it.

BLU -

Assuming Shadow is telling the truth doesn’t rule 3.2.2 quality the SA player as NA b/c he is a US citizen?

3.2.2. Team nationality

In general, during matches of ESL national sections, at all times in-game a team must have more than 50% of its players that are residing in or have the nationality of the country or countries that the national section represents.

That means Shadow would have 3/5 NA players, more than half. Which satisfy this requirement:

1.6. Go4GuildWars2 Region Restrictions

The majority of the team have to be from the region they participate in. It’s not allowed to play in both the NA region and the EU region in the same week.

The information OP gave saying he was a US citizen was not given to us in our original conversation when he was still trying to enter his team into the event. If he would like to open a ticket providing this information to us and provided it is valid with proper documentation I am sure we can allow his participation in the event as a North American player, until then however we only have his location according to our website, which states he is Brazilian.

Just out of curiosity though…. just theoretically, in which cathegory would you put SA players? They are not exactly EU either…

I believe they would be under a South American section of ESL. At the moment afaik one does not exist for Guild Wars 2.

Hi there, Ill jump in and clear up a few things before this thread goes crazy.

Firstly, during our conversation we did not bring up the fact that one of your players was from Brazil once, you simply claimed you had three American players. The main problem which lead to your team not being admitted was the fact that you registered a second American based player just a few seconds before the tournament was supposed to start, at which point we had already processed our seedings. Were we to admit you it would have inconvenienced the other 35 players participating in the event as we would have had to take time to reseed the event.

Secondly, the WTS qualifiers are run by ArenaNet, not ESL, so we have no access to the documentation you are referring to, nor can we hold the fact that the player in question participated in the WTS qualifiers as legitimate evidence to participate in Go4 Cups.

Thirdly, and most importantly, after our conversation I did check the location of this player via our website’s logs, and he is indeed based in Brazil which would make him ineligible to participate anyway, meaning you had at most two NA players which would have still made your team ineligible to play in an NA event.

If you have problems with the way our conversation was handled, you may feel free to submit feedback on our site. http://play.eslgaming.com/complaints

GW2 tournaments = boring, why?

in PvP

Posted by: BLUna.7928

BLUna.7928

The meta has a pretty big part on how interesting any game of gw2 is. If you try to find VoDs of games from mid 2013 they’re about 20x more interesting than most games that have occurred in the past year. When the teams (ie Paradigm, old school TCG with Hyxorcisten still on roster and MiM) were still investing a lot of time into the game and when you could actually run one of the old comps where spike bursting was still possible you could see some pretty impressive displays of teamwork. Those days are long gone however.

Beyond that there’s quite a few issues with the spectator side. Firstly there are essentially no spectator tools in the UI to help someone who is at a new or casual level of the game figure out what is going on in the grand scheme of things. This leaves about 90% of the explanation and clarity to the shoutcaster/producer which has it’s own set of issues. Simple things as highlighting players in game (this is actually already in but you have to turn up post processing which looks like but in PvP) or giving visual/audio ques when important abilities/events happen could increase the watchability of the game dramatically. For instance if the game could somehow detect when someone actually makes a clutch play (ie someone dodges/blocks abilities that would kill them, gets a large spike on a player, etc), then things like this could be detected by casters/production more easily than having to fish it out from the 10 people fighting in any given 3-4 fights that could be happening at different spots on the map at once. Having autodirector (the camera automatically moves to important places) could also be pretty sweet but that would require having replay functionality working which is a whole other issue as well.

Another problem lies with the core game though and it’s the fact that it has literally 0 pacing which makes it nigh impossible for anyone not already familiar with the game to follow. For Conquest, there is constantly combat occurring, never any downtime, and because of this casters have to guess at which fights are important enough to hype up and which to glance over so some analysis can be performed mid game. Every caster, player, and anet employee has different opinions on the method of how this should be handled (which fights are important, when should you hype, how much should you hype, and the same for color/analysis mid game) so there is no consistency between any two events on how the presentation is handled. I think ANet wanted to fix this with stronghold but they kept the general timing of the game the same so the pacing is probably going to remain just as chaotic if not worse since the game mode has more complexity to it.

TL;DR:

  • Meta/inactive scene has dulled the excitement surrounding games over the past 3ish years
  • No artificial spectator assistance for a game that is extremely chaotic and unpredictable
  • 0 pacing and no agreement in the community on the manner of how the game should be presented leads to inconsistency and a large problem with bringing in viewers who do not already play the game.

What Gw2 Games Look like to Outsiders

Bit off topic from OP, but another problem is that no one even knows this game exists from a competitive standpoint. I have not met a single person since I moved to CS that was aware there was a competitive scene for GW2.

OPs points are completely valid as well however, and were brought up years ago when spec was added. This is another issue that there doesn’t appear to be enough dev power to solve anytime in the near future.

I normally wouldn’t comment on these forums anymore, but OP is about the 30th person to make this exact thread, and it needs to stop yo. Let me clear this out for you.

Unless ArenaNet are doing something weird, the money being used for WTS and any other tournament is coming out of the MARKETING budget for the game, not the budget used for development.

This is fairly common among developers trying to push their game from a competitive aspect. If ArenaNet were not doing WTS, the only thing that would change would be you having more GW2 banner ads on your favorite adult content website.

The problem is that most people have jobs and because the GW2 community is so small, not a lot of players/streamers can afford to stream as often as it isn’t sustainable. I have the luxury of being in a position where I can afford to stream more often, but even with me streaming about every other day I only manage to make about 60-80$ a month from streaming this game. I imagine the streamer you linked makes a lot more. When/if the game’s viewership on twitch grows, then it will be more sustainable for streamers to just stream this game, and you will see a lot more activity. It’s a bit of a catch 22, as both are required for each other to happen, but its the inconvenient truth about how a game’s twitch sustainability works. :P

Sauce (Check the comments)

This seemed to be a fairly hotbed topic last week, but PC Gamer just confirmed that the queue for it or the automated way to play it would be 5v5, with room to expand or contract the size in CAs. I think this could be fairly interesting for the competitive scene, but what do you all think?
