Raids shatter the illusion that you’re special, or that you can get by with just about anything. Which tends to run counter to how much of the rest of the game is presented to the player. There’s nothing quite like really enjoying the weapons/build you’re used to, and finding that the content you really want to try is completely exclusionary to how you’ve built and engaged with your class/character. It’s jarring. Certainly, some of the best of the best players can and often DO complete raids with sub par builds, which is tantamount to an NFL player slumming it with high school kids, but many players don’t have the commitment and ability to do the same. It’s probably an issue with how raiding in this game is structured. It’s often the case of “git gud or get out”. I’ve had people tell me I should try raiding, but I don’t like the mentality that comes with raiding. I value my own enjoyment far above the members of the group. Arenanet, imo, cast a wide shadow of influence over the rest of the game when they introduced a new concept, “Legendary Armor”, and they put it behind something that nearly no one who played their game could reasonably do. It’s irritating.

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who wants easy fractals. I’m not very good at the game, and I won’t ever pretend to be. But I like group content, and these new fractals just kick my behind all the time. It’s stopped being fun, and there’s no other group content for me that’s as visually impressive and storied as this.

The Gift of Battle

Please Arenanet, consider putting the Gift of Battle elsewhere. [..] At this point I am no longer enjoying my time playing, specifically because WvW is not fun.

As an almost exclusive WvW player, I find it ironic and disgusting that PvE players want to avoid WvW. As if it wasn’t bad enough that WvW players have to do loads of PvE to get Legendary weapons, we also now have no access to the new Legendary Armour.

I’m disgusted that you want to shove our gamemode off the table entirely.

The solution to the problem you have is to make WvW fun, not to move the Gift of Battle elsewhere.

A few counterpoints:

I don’t want to be in a game mode that doesn’t want me. The specific PvP reward was designed wisely, allowing me to buy my way into the tokens, while PvP enthusiasts can sell them. They get extra rewards for their play time, and I don’t have to clog their queues with my noobness and disinterest.

There’s even a similar token in WvW that I had to buy very many of. But it does not apply to Gift of Battle, and I can’t comprehend why. Those who like WvW should get rewards from those who aren’t interested, and this seems like a perfect vector for it. In a sense, it’s similar to being rich and avoiding a draft to which I am a conscientious objector. (Okay, that’s a terrible analogy.)

We don’t want to shove WvW off the table (at least some of us believe in live-and-let-live), we just don’t want to be a part of it. Ever.

The solution is not for me “to make it fun”. That is not my job. ANet devs get paid to make WvW fun. But there’s a significant flaw: WvW players. New borderland? Don’t like it. Adjustments to match-ups and progression and other core mechanics? Hate it. Not good enough. Any attempt to introduce server population imbalances is met with sneers and complaints. It’d be even worse if there was “getting PvE in my WvW” by making the NPCs actual do something other than sit there waiting to be farmed for allegiance.

I suppose the point is, why should PvE players attend a game mode that, quite frankly, even WvW players seem to constantly loathe?

Again the Devs wanted players to play multiple game modes to acquire Legendary items, hence the specific Gifts from Gamemodes, you want to negate that game design because it’s inconvenient for you to spend at a minimum 4.3 hrs in a game mode to acquire something, 8.5hrs max with minimal effort that you can even AFK through almost completely. Yet players in WvW had to endure anywhere from 16-20+ hrs of completely active gameplay in a gamemode they don’t enjoy, you don’t have a problem with that because it’s not an inconvenience for you

Again play the game as it was designed, if you actually wanted the item you would get what is needed instead of complaining about it to be changed for your convenience

Well that’s fine and all I suppose. I’m fairly close to completing it after several days of attempts and genuinely boring gameplay. But as to your point about people having to spend 16-20 hours for the gift of exploration. I get it. But no one is saying that one makes the other okay. Just because we don’t want to do WvW, doesn’t suddenly negate the complaints of the people who primarily enjoy wvw.

One person doesn’t like doing open world, the other doesn’t like wvw. If that’s your argument for why nothing should be changed because the WvW players have it tougher that doesn’t make sense. You should be looking to change THAT part of the game as well. Not coming into other threads and lauding your complaints onto us because you have it harder. Either way, I’m tired. Maybe I’ll come back later.

Please Arenanet, consider putting the Gift of Battle elsewhere. It’s the last item I need to make Twilight, and I’ve been just running around in random wvw maps trying to figure out how to progress this reward track. At this point I am no longer enjoying my time playing, specifically because WvW is not fun. At all. Yet it is still the only way to obtain the Gift of Battle. Please, it’s all I need/want, and I’m driving myself mad because I’m stuck here for god knows how long. I almost never see a commander tag anywhere, so I can’t run around with anybody, if I try to capture objectives by myself I get stomped by huge zergs or groups and I’m at a loss as to what I’m supposed to do now.

Jumping puzzles, achievements, mastery points, hero points… yeah, having to do research for a game feel likes a chore.

Interesting, that’s exactly how I feel about raiding in general.

I’m starting to make peace with the fact that I’ll never get raid legendary armor. I hope someday Arenanet will come to the conclusion that it’s okay to make more legendary armor for wvw, spvp and fractals or open world. So that, like raiders, we can also chase long term goals relating to unique, animated armor sets as well.

I’m personally bitter at Arenanet, and by extension raiding because after all this time, they finally add cool legendary armor, but they lock it behind an exclusionary, oftentimes militant game mode rather than spend time finding ways to integrate it into all game modes.

Why are people so afraid of raiding?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Bandrell.4357

My problems with raiding in this game are many. For one, I’m not comfortable with the idea of having to use weapons that don’t fit my playstyle. Second, I don’t care for not being able to have a main and sticking to it; you’re encouraged and even expected to be able to play multiple.professions. I don’t know about everyone else, but my joy in this game is picking a style of play and immersing myself in that class entirety. Raids don’t allow that, or more accurately, the community is against it. Third, I prefer smaller group content, whereally I can (haven’t yet, but I’m still looking) more intimately get to know everyone I am playing with. In raids, you become more of a cog in a wheel, a number or necessity rather than a person. That is just not cool.

Bandrell.4357

Honestly, the title says it all. I’m looking for a guild I can essentially make friends with. Preferrably one that focuses on PvE group content, occasionally open world stuff as well. I’ve been trying to do fractals to fair success, but it’s not a lot of fun without people to shoot the breeze with on Discord/TS/whatever. My fractal level is 42, but seeing as I haven’t done them regularly for over 10 months I’m rusty.

As an aside, I’m working on a couple of legendary items, notably Ad Infinitum and Twilight, which is one of the reasons I’m focusing so heavily on content I actually enjoy. I generally tend to have Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays completely free so if you’re interested in having a new member lurking about please don’t hesitate to contact me in game.

Action Camera suggestions

Bandrell.4357

2. Allow me to bind Skill X to Right-click during action-camera use, just as skill 1 is bound to Left Click.

I also have an issue with travel skills, especially teleports (Guardian’s Judge’s intervention and Sword 2, and Warrior GS5 most notably). Action cam tends to leave my Guardian standing in place when I want to teleport to a target (Either because the target’s out of range, or just too off-center: see my camera complaint above), though I enjoy being able to use GS5 on my warrior to disengage with Action Cam (Very useful in the Silverwaste’s Pac-man segment)

I agree with these 100%. If you’re going to implement action cam, let’s keep iterating on it while we have it.

This game is pay to win, Slightly.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Bandrell.4357

This is how the phrase “Pay to Win” is supposed to be defined:

Games that let you buy better gear or allow you to make better items then everyone else at a faster rate and then makes the game largely unbalanced even for people who have skill in the game without paying.

I cannot stress enough, how impossible that is to do in this game. Ascended armor cannot be bought, it has to be crafted. You cannot circumvent the acquisition of several account bound items needed to craft them, either. Yes, you can buy a legendary, for somewhere around $350-$400 of real money, but what advantage are you really getting? I mean, perception is everything, and it’s pretty widely accepted that the gap between exotic and ascended is negligible in all game modes. So, where is this perception that buying a legendary weapon—which is exactly as powerful as an ascended weapon of the same type—considered pay to win?

Who changed the definition? Why did we suddenly start muddying that definition? Because a game offered people the opportunity to purchase currency in a game? I think we need to instead look at what advantages that currency provides, rather than shallowly scrutinizing the business model.

Non Raiders blocked from XP bar spirit shards

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Bandrell.4357

Bandrell.4357

So basically what you are saying is, if you are gaining experience while on a mastery track that is at its end-be it complete or not-that excess XP should be converted into spirit shards, yet it isn’t?

If it doesn’t currently work this way because they’ve locked spirit shard gain behind training ALL masteries-including RAID masteries-completely, I cannot say that I agree with that design decision. MMORPG game design shouldn’t be predicated on the expectation that players will be encouraged or motivated to participate in every game mode that the game offers in order to progress. Particularly a game whose stance is “Play your way”.

I’m not a casual player. I’m terrible at this game. I get lost, trapped, stunned and crippled all through out these zones. People to run with consistently would make this a lot more bearable.

My 2 cents.

Bandrell.4357

Let me be clear. I have no problems with there being legendary armor skins for WvW or sPvP, so long as they are mutually exclusive. I do not believe standing around or killing krait for 300 hours is something that should be rewarded. My reasoning why should be just as transparent.

Ascended Gear to be Required for Raids

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Bandrell.4357

Bandrell.4357

Yes, recommended. Which is why this whole argument is pointless. Anyone who is going to set standards for pug groups by having ascended armor be a requirement is someone you shouldn’t be grouping with anyway. Just make your own group. Half of this game’s problems would be solved by people simply making their own groups.
What is wrong with someone getting fed up with people’s overcompensation and saying “F this I’m making my own group!”? There are so many people that sit around and wait for the world to change instead of being a part of change.

Bandrell.4357

Flaws in the way the real world seems to work through anecdotal evidence doesn’t mean the system itself is a failure. At some point hard work is supposed to pay off. That is the point of working hard or succeeding at a challenge, as it were. There will always be ways to game the system. Does that then mean that in Gw2 we are to institute holes so that players fall through them?

Bandrell.4357

If you want the reward, you do the content that is designed around it. It’s that simple. Nobody should spread out the rewards to every facet of the game because people feel it’s unfair to have challenge and exclusive rewards linked together. I have news for you, they’re always linked together, and it is this that Gw2 lacked before; a clearly defined reward behind significant challenge.
Where did these people come from who believe that challenge and reward are mutually exclusive, because they aren’t. They are linked together, as they should be. If you remove good rewards from challenging content, you remove any incentive to do the content and thus devalue the developer’s work put into it. On the other hand, spreading out said reward to other game modes that do not offer the same challenge again simply makes the reward cheap and meaningless.
This game needs meaningful rewards. And it stands to reason that such rewards are given for taking on a significant challenge. If you are not up to the challenge, or the “busy work” involved in reaching it, (however time consuming or uninteresting it may be to you) then you didn’t want it badly enough.
