I wanted to know if there is anything I should watch out for?
I’m a CS major, cybersecurity getting into network engineering preparing for grad school hoping for a doctoral.
Working with unix systems yet also being expected to run commercial software and also having a passion for digital art and also needing Windows for so many commercial programs I am drawn to a Macbook Pro, I can run what I need, use Brew to get my Unix / Linux programs, run a VM… I got a new 2017 15 inch macbook pro at a hefty price.
Preparing for a move I just don’t like subscription fees of MMO’s and with health presently I don’t know how much time. Either I’ll be on it 24/7 or just no energy at all.
Anyone sure what I may expect on a 2017 17 inch retina macbook pro? 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 , 16GB of RAM, Radeon Pro 560 4096 MB.
At my desk I use a 28" 4K monitor, which I am sure will potentially come into play with quality unsure if it is still a glorified wine wrapper?
Nothing against Windows. I just use everything that is syncing up together, phone to watch to tablet to computer and I use unix servers, I grew up with linux systems prior to Windows. It fits my needs.
I’m curious what to expect for quality?
Returning. Current performance on my systems?

Hello,
I’m back again! I tend to play GW2 in very small amounts. I have some friends that play and I want to get on with them. I have base game and expansion.
My gaming machine is a MSI GE Series Apache Pro. 16GB RAM, quad 6th gen i7, 3GB GTX 970M graphics. It’s a gaming machine, I am a computer science major. I went with it over the Dell Precision mobile workstation because I wanted this graphics card versus a workstation graphics card. And I’m very happy.
I haven’t been on forever. Should I expect to have a fun time with these specs? I can always bump my RAM up to 32GB, but I’m concerned about the GTX 970M card. When I get into things I love the visuals.
I got a new MacBook Pro in September after spilling iced tea over my prior. I use it while out and about, the MSI stays in my home. I had a 15-inch prior and it worked good but this was a long time ago.
Specs: MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), 2.7GHz i5 (dual core), 8GB RAM, Iris 6100 graphics.
Thanks again!
Hello,
I understand this completely! I am a university student doing an online program and have numerous life struggles. While studying I do not work full time. Keeping GW2 on a flash drive works for me – I am just getting back into the game, although on my laptop I’ve kept it on a USB 3.0 flash drive (128GB) just because the laptop I lug around for my studies to various coffee shops and libraries has an internal SSD and I do not want to fill it up with games.
I was with Verizon Wireless, I am in the USA. It became expensive and there is drama with those share plans I wanted to avoid. For what I was paying, I switched over to T-Mobile. $70 a month for unlimited data, I got an iPhone 7 Plus 128GB – monthly fees for that are $30/mo, so I pay $100/mo, put down $250 down (I did pay for overnight shipping), but after 24 months its $70/mo. Right now they have a promotion going on that you can still likely get in on, normally its $15/mo more for this. Unlimited HD quality streaming and 10GB of 4G speed mobile hotspot. After the 10GB you are down to 3G speed.
You state that your using 3G cellular. I was in the hospital for 5 days, and they block ports. I used my 10GB of 4G data, and just moved down to 3G.
This plan permits tethering. I plugged my iPhone into my laptop with a USB cable (Can also use wifi hotspot!) and I can get online anywhere I need to. It is not sold as a replacement for your home broadband, but I know a woman who does this and hasn’t had issues.
I can only imagine that if your using 3G internet then you also have a cell phone. If the two devices are separate, this may save you money. If not, this may be a little investment. If you have the time to look into it, and perhaps credit to put down money for a phone, and this is still in the range you pay for limited data… I’d suggest it.
I’m a computer science major, studying to be a network engineer. I do understand why ArenaNet has the game designed this way from that perspective. And it seems like it would be hard on their end to modify something for a small amount of players. I can see how it eats through your data / resources easily, likely just by having many of the update systems in place. If you’re on a laptop, maybe your library or a book store like Barnes and Nobel may be good when you know an update is coming? I game there at times and use it as an excuse to get a snapple and cheese cake.
This indeed would be a nice thing on the to-do list. A low-bandwidth / bandwidth cautious mode. I would love to see this too, as I take my laptop with me for studies. I’d also love to see a native Mac client, but that’s another story.
Thanks.
I’m running a MacBook Pro, 13 inch, dual core i5, 8GB RAM, Intel Iris 6100.
Mac beta ran good on my prior, a 15-inch retina macbook pro with the quad i7,16GB RAM, and iris pro, although I got it wet. The games I do play… WoW has native, EQ and EQ2 run in VM, and SecondLife has native Mac, I have my gaming PC, I just love my Mac… Gaming PC runs all my games, but its just not my MBP. Killed the 15-inch rMBP that had the nice amount of RAM and the nice quad i7 although it only had the iris pro graphics. Was just out of the price range this time, considering I’m not even a huge gamer. I only get on for an hour at a time, I spend most my time on SecondLife… a VR world. I recall looking at performance monitor on the prior Mac and I realized I wasn’t even utilizing anything near what it was capable of unless I was doing stuff in a VM.
Hi,
I’m curious before getting into GW2 yet again (never made it outside starting areas!) if I would have better luck on my macbook pro just running GW2 in a VM in parallels desktop?
Thanks. I"ll give it a shot soon.
Hi all,
I have my MBP – MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
8GB of RAM.
Will GW2 run? I never got out of starting areas after buying GW2 at launch and would love to resume but I really want to play on my Mac.
Can we please get a working Mac Client [Merged]

This will be enough to make me get back into the game once again.
Hi again,
I have my new 13 inch MacBook Pro, 8gb ram and a 256gb drive.
I was able to get in GW2 and walk around the starting area without issue.
Will I get this performance throughout the game or is it going to just end up crashing in newer zones as I read on here?
Thanks.
Hi -
I last ran GW2 on a Mac right when the GW2 Mac client came out.
I haven’t tried it since.
Understanding that the client is just a wrapper based on WINE, does GW2 even run well on a Mac running OS X anymore? I’m curious as GW2 has evolved so much, and it wouldn’t surprise me if performance was terrible, but I just wanted to know before I waste an afternoon trying. My new MacBook for college comes in the morning, and I don’t want to waste time if I don’t have to.
Hey all,
My new MacBook Pro for school comes tomorrow from FedEx, I went with the 13" retina macbook pro with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD.
How well should this handle GW2? I bought GW2, never got far… Seeing as there is no monthly fee I wanted to give it a shot again.
ok your specs you mentioned are better then mine and i play off an external drive like you suggest so it is doable. mine runs flawless but im set on lower graphic settings then my decked out desktop on my laptop but its playable and i do a lot of wvw on my laptop
Good to know!
And you’re running Windows, not a Mac?
I’ll find out how it runs on Intel HD graphics… my other machines all have nVidia graphics. I don’t expect it to be amazing… just something to do in my down time if I’m in the library or something.
I’ll give it a shot.
I play only on a laptop so does my other half. We’ve only played on laptops for several years now. We’ve had several laptops over the years, the oldest I think was about 7 yrs old that just got replaced.
We also use only the data connection thru the cell phones. We are still grandfathered into the unlimited from Verizon.
Thank you. I have a gaming laptop as well, and that really doesn’t address the big question -
If I were to install it on that laptop I’d install it on an external USB 3.0 1TB HDD, and I wanted to make sure that wouldn’t cause issues. I don’t see why it would but I thought I’d ask.
Hello again,
I was curious about playing on a laptop I bought to lug around to class with in the fall…
I have a notebook with 8GB RAM, Dual Core 6th gen i5, Intel HD 520 graphics.
It isn’t the end of the world if I cannot get on GW2 with this laptop, being that I really bought it to maximize portability, as it’s a nice portable machine compared to my others and I don’t handwrite so I need something that I can pull out and get going during lectures.
The thing is that I have a 128GB SSD in this machine. Because of that, I did also get a SanDisk Ultafit flash drive, which is a very small form factor USB 3.0 flash drive, which is running amazing and I have most applications on there.
If I get on with the laptop, there is a USB 3.0 1TB HDD that I keep larger files on. Would it work if I were to install GW2 to that drive, or would I run into issues?
I won’t be getting on frequently, I just want to have the ability to get on when I am away from home and have a good amount of downtime. I don’t want to do anything that will mess up the computer, but I do have that USB 3.0 HDD, 1TB.
Thanks again.
When did you decide to uninstall? Getting an idea of when you left could bring to light what you would maybe come back for.
Right when the expansion came out.
I was on a Mac, and it died on me… ended up buying a PC and got caught up in my college assignments as well as other games… EverQuest / EverQuest 2…
Hi again!
I’m just curious if it’s worth it to reinstall GW2 and play some more?
I’ve been into WoW and EQ as well as EQ2, so I was just curious, as well as being curious if GW2 is still highly populated as far as lots of players being online at once?
Are there large amounts of players in most the areas? Around how many would you say??
Thanks again!

I’m expecting a slow download and the forum to crash for a while when everyone hits download 1 sec after it starts. So yah.
haha yes, I’m curious if that will happen…
It wouldn’t surprise me if it did.

Hi all,
I’m just curious… do you think the servers will be mobbed opening morning for the expansion?
The only time sub games add content is when there is an axpansion which costs more money.
Gw2 has added tons of free content the past 3 years, with tons of events. They have added maps and redone systems(upgraded them).
The expansion will bring more maps and content, then tons of free content added later after that.
o and you cant redo LS1, it was an open world event that went on. LS2 was free if you logged in when it came out, otherwise now you have to buy it(so if u actually played the game it was free)
Thanks… With the hopes that there will be tons of new content with the expansion, I’ll stay with GW2. I’m enjoying it.
Seasons were regular additions of “personal story like” quests, pulling forward the world’s story. At peak they were coming every 2 weeks ;-)
Season 1 was not meant to be replayable and this disappointed people, that’s why they changed it with season 2 (and that’s why you see it in the personal story panel, but not season 1) they are working to bring season 1 back in the season 2’s format just after the release of the xpac, tho. In the meantime you can catch up on the wiki/utube and play the season 2 after (buy it, there a discounted full pack available) or join groups that are doing it for the achievs (altho if you do not buy it you cannot do achievs too) worth mention they were free to unlock if you logged in when they were live
Thanks, although I don’t quite understand.
With these regular updates, what are they adding to add new things to do in-game?
I’m just curious, as subscription based MMO’s I’ve played added new content with things to do (like quests…), and I’m liking GW2, although if it doesn’t have updates to keep it fresh, I question how people can be playing it for three years like this.
Until announce of the xpac there was a fair number of updates with living story season 1 and 2, festivals, SuperAdventureBox. Now they are working kitten the xpac because people so loudly wanted it. After that, since the whole xpac is made in order to allow them easy extensions (think of masteries and specializations) the regular content will be back, son’t worry
No problem, I understand.
I haven’t done story 1, I only see story 2 on my hero screen.
Regular content updates… What sorts of things would that be?
I’m from EverQuest 2 and World of Warcraft, now trying to explore Guild Wars 2.
Are updates adding quests, or what ever quest-like things in GW2 are?
Hi all,
So, GW2 is like three years old.
So…
What keeps everyone here?
On subscription based MMO’s, there are regular updates with lots of new content.
I do not know what GW2 does as far as updates and new content to keep people around and playing.
How frequently are the updates pushed out on average, and what is often in the updates that keeps the game exciting, fun, and fresh for veterans, such as those that have been here since launch?
I really love GW2, although to stay committed I really wanted to know about frequency of updates and exactly What is usually in updates / what type of content is usually in updates.
Thanks!
Oh, no, I looked through my checkbook, and I have the money to get the expansion on Saturday (This upcoming Saturday), so if my GW2 experience between now and then is positive, I’m getting it.
Well, I’ll likely get the Pre-Order ASAP. I might get it on Saturday… Depends how things go.
Well, I look forward to this greatly.
If I end up liking it, I’ll likely get the expansion on pre-order.
What’s gamescom?
Hi all,
My installer has been stuck at Installing file 486 of 493 for over ten minutes now.
Is this a common error?
GW2 is not a slot-machine like WoW where you always have to push in some money
before you can play it .. so just start the game, login .. and look if you like it.On the other hand .. Laptops are already not great for most games, and Mac is
also worse than PCs .. so i don’t know what performance you can expect.
I’m installing it now. And yeah, that was frustrating about WoW, considering some months I only got on a few days.
As far as the computer:
My prior MacBook Pro ran it fine. This one is much faster, so I’m anticipating it’ll run okay.
Quad Core i7, 16GB RAM.
Well, that explains why I haven’t been able to find one.
Thanks.
Hi all,
I’ve been looking but I couldn’t find it -
When is the release date?
I’m just curious as I want to set aside money for it, so I’m just curious when it’s going to be out so I can plan accordingly.
Thanks
I’m going for it.
Hi all,
I was curious of GW2 was worth returning to?
I must make some points:
I love MMO’s for social interaction, group play, grouping up, and making friends while also having fun online with my characters.
I ended up buying a new laptop, a 15" Retina MacBook Pro… and am debating about returning to GW2.
If someone could let me know how the state of the game is, with the points I’ve made (Wanting to go on GW2 to make a character, progress through the game, and making new friends, chatting, grouping up, and so on)….
I’d be happy to return.
As far as now I have World of Warcraft going, if I end up loving GW2 I’ll gladly cancel and spend all my gaming time on here.
I appreciate feedback.
Hi,
I’m on a Retina MacBook Pro with a 250GB SSD.
I really want to get back into GW2 and I want to pre-order and play HoT.
At the same time, I am cautious… I have 108GB free.
Will I have enough space free for GW2? I need to also conserve disk space for updates for other applications I run.

My installer (Mac) is stuck on Installing File 486 out of 493.
I’m not sure how to handle this?
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks for the luck.
I’ll give it a shot.
35GB total.
Is it worth it?
I plan to buy HoT next week and all.
I LOVE WoW and EQ/EQ2, and I’d love to get into GW2, and the free online gameplay is really attracting me to it.
Is the game worth it? Can someone with MMO experience give me insight?
Thanks.
Hot requirement is 35gb. According to my friend who just got HoT and installed the game he downloaded 30gb.
To clarify:
GW2 with HoT will consume about 35GB of disk space, or 35GB plus that 30GB?
Hi,
I’ve posted this in tech support without any luck…
I’m about to install GW2 on my laptop.
About how much disk space should I anticipate it to use?
How much more with HoT?
Hello,
I never really got far on GW2, despite my buying it at launch.I’ve made another topic on the support forum about the amount of disk space it will consume (GW2 and HoT).
Regardless, if I have enough space, I will likely return AND pre-order HoT next week.
At the same time, is GW2 welcoming to someone who only has toons in the starting zones?
Thanks.
Welcome back!
Yes, this game is very friendly to starting zone players. Especially now thag the Queensdale champion farm is more or less gone. Feel free to ask in mapchat if you need help or have a question. You can even post in the lfg (in your contacts) under open world that you are a “new” player who has questions and/or needs help. I’m sure you will get people who would love to join you. Best of luck — and happy adventuring!
Thanks.
I’ll give it a shot. I LOVE MMO’s, and MMO’s without a monthly fee… YAY!
I am on a MacBook Pro, I just need to make sure I have the disk space.
I’ll get on it. If I like it I think i’ll pre-order the expansion next month.

Hi all,
I’m limited on disk space and I want to know:
About how much disk space will GW2 and HoT take up?
This will determine if I am to play GW2 again or not, if it is too much then I’ll forget it, if I don’t have enough space.

Hi all,
I’m considering doing the pre-order next month.
What are the benefits of doing the pre-order versus waiting for the release, other than the access to the beta weekends?
I like MMO’s and I’m attracted to GW2 because there aren’t any subscription fees.
About how much disk space will this use up?

Hi all,
I have a MacBook Pro with a 250GB SSD (Solid State Drive).
Due to limited disk space, I am very curious (and worried) about how much disk space Heart of Thorns will take up.
Does anyone know about how much disk space this update will be? I do have GW2 installed, but now am concerned about how much more disk space the expansion will utilize.
Thanks again
Well, regardless, it’ll be nice once it’s out.
I’m anxiously awaiting the launch…
I’m curious how much it will cost.
