Hello! I’m trying to get into the game, but the UI/controls are giving me a few issues. It doesn’t seem as customizable as other MMOs, but maybe I’m missing the options? There are three things that are bothering me, and I was hoping people could either confirm that there’s no way to get around it (so I’ll have to see if I can live with it) or point me to a solution that I’ve missed:
1) UI Scale – Every other MMO I’ve played has a scale bar in an options menu, allowing me to shrink or enlarge the UI. Guild Wars 2’s UI takes up so much screen space, which is such a shame given how beautiful the world behind the UI is. Is there any way to shrink it? It’s HUGE! I can easily halve the size of those hot bar icons and still read them.
2) Mouse Zoom Sensitivity – For some reason if I scroll ever so slightly, the game zooms in/out really quickly. I can find an option to reduce the sensitivity of the camera rotation (holding right click and dragging), but not an option to reduce the zoom sensitivity.
3) Zoom While Moving – Somewhat related to number 2, I can’t zoom in/out while holding down the right mouse button. I had no idea how important this was to me until I started playing an MMO that doesn’t allow me to do it. Is there any way to make this work?
Thank you! Mobile Authentication works perfectly for me =)
Every time I log into my account, or even the game via the launcher, I get a message telling me I’m logging in from a new computer and need to wait for an email for verification. Even when I tick “remember this address” I still need to go through the process every single time.
Since this doesn’t work, and is a royal pain in the *, how do I disable this “feature”?
Here’s how it works right now:
You save up glory points and spend them on one of three chests, each with a different price (200, 500, or 1000 points). Inside the chest you’ll get three to four pieces of gear (not affected by price of chest), and the idea is to break down the items into components in order to craft the gear you want. Because the gear inside most likely won’t be the gear you’re after. Items from more expensive chests provide better items when broken down (that’s the only difference between the chests). You then combine the items received from breaking down, with two other oddly named items made for PVP crafting, with each combination resulting in a different tier and type of item. So you select the items you need for the tier you’re after (which isn’t explained, you have to Google which items you need for the gear you’re after, based on other player’s experimentations and what they’ve discovered) and even then, there’s always a 20% chance that the item you’re trying to craft will end up being of a worse or better tier anyway.
Guild Wars 2 made some really smart alterations to simplify and improve MMO gameplay, like no mob-tagging; full XP and loot for all contributing players; “end game” being the entire game; exploration being rewarded; down-leveling players so that they can enjoy low level areas as intended, or play with low level friends and still feel challenged.
So what happened here? Why did you create one of the most backwards, frustrating, and overly complex PVP systems I’ve ever seen in an MMO? Even if you save up thousands of glory points for the items you need, and work out the exact combination of items required, you could combine them correctly and be given the middle finger when that chance procs that turns out a lower tier item than the one you were after.
How about this: Glory vendors sell PVP gear. Each piece of gear has a set price, purchasable with glory points. Higher tiered items have PVP level restrictions, and cost more glory. We visit the vendors, see a full list of the gear available so we can instantly see what we want and how much it will cost. That glory we earned no longer goes to waste, and our brains don’t melt when we turn to the forums or Google to ask “How the hell does this system work, and why did my 1000 point gold chest give me nothing better than the 200 point copper ones?”
I would have thought this was obvious. WvWvW is an amazing game that requires tactics and teamwork to win, with players filling various roles as needed (healing, reviving, assaulting supply camps, etc).
This badge system only encourages players to ignore their downed team mates, to stick with the zerg instead of splintering off from them to assist by cutting off enemy supplies, and to spec for DPS and ignore support builds.
Please at least consider making some changes to how badges are awarded =)
Shield:
I have less experience with with shield, but I think the reason why not so many ppl use main+shield as their main weapon because the shield itself is good when the long cooldown bash and stance skill are up. The trait also isn’t that good enough.
I love using a sword and shield for the aesthetics. But I don’t like how long the cooldown is on shield stance. The bash is fine, since it’s an interrupt more than a stun, but I would rather have a faster cooldown on the shield stance (say, 20 seconds, 15 with the trait) and a shorter block duration (2 seconds instead of 3).
I time my blocks to interrupt key attacks, and find myself dropping the shield immediately afterwards to continue dealing damage. The duration is partly wasted, and I have to wait a fair amount of time before my Warrior can find the strength to lift the shield again. It just doesn’t feel right. Shields are for blocking. Let me block more than once per battle!
I also think the armour rating on shields needs a buff. You’d think it would provide a big boost, but it’s about a fifth of the armour rating that an equal level chest provides.
Those are my thoughts so far, but I’m only level 29. Done a lot of PVE, some Battlegrounds (Rank 3), and a really fun few hours of WvWvW where I helped my server take Stonemist and then surge through enemy territory! I play a support role, utilizing banners, and fighting to stay alive rather than deal damage (hence the shield).
For some reason my “Hundred Blades” Skill only attacks eight times…
I love you <3
“What exactly is it that you farmers want to get out of a game?”
I find it kind of… therapeutic. I don’t grind exclusively for hours and hours every day. But I will happily spend an hour or more grinding once or twice a week. I think it comes from the old JRPGs I used to play as a kid, where grinding allowed you to get ahead of the game slightly, would give you some rare drops to make you more powerful, and would level you up and give you access to better skills. It was like a challenge, and felt rewarding.
It’s a shame to hear that this isn’t being encouraged in GW2, even though there are plenty of consumables that suggest it is (food buffs, XP booster). You may not enjoy it, and that’s fine, but quite a lot of players do. Not exclusively, but to complement questing and PVP. Loot drops are fun and addictive – as Diablo proved over a decade ago, and Borderlands is still proving today.
Yeah I felt the same. Having played with a Human Male as my first character (voiced by Nolan North) it was quite jarring switching to a character as direct and tactless as the Norn Female.
I’m sure there are plenty of people who will like the voice, particularly for a threatening warrior, but I was trying to play as a charming thief. It really didn’t match up at all =P
That’s just how it is. Since you get in combat so frequently in the game, and for each bout to last no more than 10 seconds on average, it would be pretty jarring if the music constantly switched from field track to battle track five to six times a minute when you’re questing.
So instead, battle music triggers when you’re against a big pack of monsters, or a ‘boss’ class enemy.
Well, it’s not as bad as hearing “I will destroy you!” over and over again when you’re assaulting mercenaries. >.> <.<
“Enemy is everywhere!”
I agree with the OP. Overall this is a fantastic game, and the audio is usually superb. I love hearing townsfolk chatter about random goings on, or guards taking a break under a tree and saying how it’s a great place for lunch between patrols.
But certainly, variety for these one-liners our own characters say would be greatly appreciated. I don’t know how feasible it would be to get those core actors back in to record some more lines, but hearing exactly the same lines for each little action (buffs, achievements, adrenaline build-up for warriors, etc) is a little odd given how much emphasis has been placed on voice actor variety in the world around us.
As far as I’m aware, repetition in music is due to popular and common tastes. So when you’re trying to create a track that will instantly appeal to a mass market, your hands are kind of bound in terms of what you can use.
This comedy video highlights how pretty much every single pop music hit in the last few decades all sound identical, and can be woven together into one individual song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pidokakU4I Don’t watch it if you want to retain any respect you have for pop music artists. This video will shatter it all.
It’s not that Soule lacks creativity or talent. It’s that he needs to create music that is instantly enjoyable since this is a mainstream game. If you want variety and sweeping scores, try Classic FM.
“I achieve things. I’m an achiever!”
And thanks for the tips about the Human Female. I couldn’t get into the Norn Female because of the harsh voice (though I’m sure some will love it), so I’ll try out the Human instead =)
Thanks =)
But presumably, if lower rank appearances don’t bother me as much, I could save all that glory up until the highest ranks, spending it all on gold chests when I get there? Instead of spending it on lower rank gear that I will only want to replace later on.
Its all for cosmetics mate
Okay, I think I’m understanding now. So every piece of gear in PVP will always have the same stats to ensure balance, but will look different based on rank?
So those 1000 points spent on a rank 1 gold chest were poorly spent, because the items were always going to look like crap. I should save them until I’m a much higher rank, so I’m more likely to get higher tier (and so better looking) items, and if I can’t use them I can just break them down and forge something useful instead. And items from gold chests are likely to break down into better components.
That’s the gist of it?
So you’re saying the point of the chests is to give you gear, so that you can break it down, to craft gear?
Doesn’t that seem a little convoluted? Wouldn’t it make more sense to actually make the gear in the chests useful? Or make the chests provide crafting components to make gear?
Because in its current form I get awarded gear, which I naturally assume I’m supposed to use, only to conclude that I already have that gear.
What is it with MMOs and their overly complex PVP reward systems? SWTOR’s was atrocious too. I would have thought GW2 would have overhauled this aspect, given how great a job they handled so many other mechanics. But if what you say is true, then that’s just… dumb.
So I saved up 1000 points to purchase a gold chest, and had already opened two copper chests from rewards. The first thing I noticed was that the 800 point difference was not even remotely apparent in what I received from the gold chest, so from now on I will definitely be buying five copper chests instead of one gold. Seems like a no-brainer.
Secondly, my main question: in the gold chest I got two pieces of armour that my warrior could equip: chest and legs. Both of which had identical stats to the free gear I was already wearing. Exactly the same armour rating, one slot for a sigil, just a slightly different name. So… what the hell?
Tell me I’m missing something. There must be some way this new armour from a gold chest is better than the stock gear you’re given when you enter the mists. What am I not understanding about this PVP gear system?
I know he voices almost every video game character that’s been created in the last decade, but I just needed to say that I LOVE his work on the Human Male in Guild Wars 2. It really is one of his best roles imo.
I tried him out in SWTOR (Male Jedi Knight) and, man… I know Jedi are supposed to be emotionless, but… yawn.
Well in this game he delivers an exceptional performance given that the character is such an unknown quantity to him, and largely created by the player. He fits my Warrior perfectly, so thanks.

Thanks for all the answers, everyone! Really helpful =)
I do understand that being able to block absolutely anything with the shield skill is incredibly useful, I was just wondering if having that ability once every 30 seconds is viable when you could just be using a second weapon for more offensive skills (A good offense if the best defence) instead.
But those traits certainly sound great, reducing shield stance’s cooldown to every 22.5 seconds, and making it block for longer. I’m assuming 90 toughness is a lot? I’m still too low level to know how beneficial 90 extra toughness will be at 80.
I’m a new player, loving the game so far, and leveling a Human Warrior. I’ve always enjoyed sword/shield classes in other MMOs and RPGs, so thought I’d try it out here.
Trouble is, with a shield in the off-hand, we only get two skills to use that are associated with it. One is a single second stun (so an interrupt really) and the other is a skill that makes your shield block. Both have a 30 second cooldown. That means I get to block with my shield (what I’d assume to be its primary purpose) once every 30 seconds. That’s a very long time in PVP.
I’m worried that this long cooldown renders the shield practically useless compared to using a 2-hander or dual wielding for the extra damage output and two additional damaging skills. Does anyone have experience using sword and shield at high levels or in PVP? Are my fears correct, or is using a shield a perfectly viable choice in competitive WvWvW?
