That is wrong. My argument assume not everyone is honest in their opinions. Just because one phrase their opinions in certain manner doesn’t means they mean it that way. It is quite easy to make use of sympathy as arguments to convince people, it is also quite easy to turn it into strawman argument. It is way easier to just say don’t delete my server I like it instead of explaining the real reasons behind it. What I am doing here is to identify their honest reasons and convince their reasons are not an issue in the new system.

Since you want to be taken as honest, please extend the courtesy to all others. Since you are versed in philosophy and its fallacies, you surely know about the Categorical Imperative.

As you already said, without further knowledge but what if I do have some other encounter of mentioned players? Afterall, it seems to me that you are standing up for a few instead of every poster as I respond differently to every poster.

I appreciate that you know about categorical imperative but that isn’t how you use it. What is the “maxim” for this case, everyone’s and mine?

I will highlight the maxime from your quote: not everyone is honest in their opinions. If this is the general principle, the question is: why should I assume you yourself are honest when you claim unnamed others are not? If you want to be given the benefit of doubt, you need to give it to others yourself. Furthermore you generalize from the particular case: you use your unnamed dishonest persons to disregard everyone else of the same opinion.

We have lived, amongst other things, through a year of constant bottom rank #27 in the league (about 3 years ago), being 15 people on all maps during primetime (shortly before links) and nine months of being a mercenary server. When the hype is gone, we will probably end up back there. Still, a good core of 30 people refused to leave the server and will most likely stay, no matter what. You are overstepping your bounds by telling me to do as you please.

Those are strong words. I would like to make it really clear that if one reject any proposals to populations balance and all of these proposals will definitely will not leave any communities untouched, please do not complain or rant about population imbalance, please do not QQ about blobs running over the zerg, please do not rage quit wvw just because you are outnumbered. Oh, do note that there will be people in your server or community not as easily contented as you, you will lose them.

You are again subject to the logical fallacy of faulty generalization: I reject your proposal, not any proposal. You know enough about these fallacies when they are applied against you, please also take care that you are not trapped by them yourself.

I am not sure about most players. As you can already see in the thread, a lot of people oppose greatly about deleting servers and remaking them (without trying to understand the logic anyway). Even though we do not know how many are still around with that strong sense of server identity, they are still around, at least there are quite a number of vocal minority around. We do not know if they using it as a convenient excuse or what, it is there.

While I don’t have that sense of server identity because I put guild over server, I still do play WvW for what it is but if you megalized it, it isn’t the same WvW anymore.

I identify with the people I know and like to play with, if they are in my guild or not. Would my guild move to a different server, I would be heavily torn. It is not hard to imagine that these feelings are quite common. Yet you disregard it by writing “We do not know if they using it as a convenient excuse or what[…]”. During this discussion, you have pointed to ad hominem attacks against you. Nevertheless, your whole argumentation assumes that people share your guild over server identity feelings and ignores all others. It might be really helpful if you acknowledged that server communities hold people together with the similar strength as guilds do, even more the smaller a server is.

WvW and PvP Ascended Armor Upgrades

When the August 8th update is released, WvW and PvP players who own Heart of Thorns will be able to upgrade their WvW and PvP ascended armor to have legendary attributes! This new type of armor will not have a unique skin, such as the one that is part of the raids legendary armor, but instead will consist of an upgrade to WvW and PvP ascended armor that gives those armor pieces legendary stat-swapping capabilities without changing the skin.
The following PvP and WvW ascended armor can be upgraded to allow stat swapping:
• Triumphant Hero’s Ascended Armor
• Mistforged Triumphant Hero’s Ascended Armor
• Ardent Glorious Ascended Armor
• Glorious Hero Ascended Armor
To upgrade a piece of WvW or PvP ascended armor, combine 3 new PvP or WvW gifts with 1 piece of ascended gear in the Mystic Forge. You can purchase ingredients for the gifts from either Commander War Razor in WvW or the Ascended Armor League Vendor in PvP.

Wow, that sounds awesome! Functional, no other incentive than allowing people to experiment with builds! It doesn’t take away the prestige from the raid armor and fulfills the need of the WvWers :-)

I main Mesmer since I started playing GW2 and still love it for its mobility and interesting gameplay. My main focus is WvW, but apart from Raids, I’ve done everything else and didn’t have any severe problems. So, if you like playing Mesmer, just go for it.

I’m not sure what this should achieve. Links were supposed to help balance the population. I agree that they didn’t solve the problem but they are also not the cause of population imbalance.

Regarding siege: some siege is definitely what makes WvW interesting. If it is like yesterday evening, where I saw 8+ superior catapults stacked at the outer AG keep (didn’t count the ones at inner.), it’s definitely too much. I was wondering if each finished siege would increase the supply cost of all friendly siege built in a certain area around it. That might force people to spread out.

These completely unbalanced matchups are extremely harmful to WvW – I don’t think people mind losing that much, but being steamrolled all the team just takes the fun out of it. As long as the healthiest option is not to play WvW, unbalanced matchups will kill the WvW population. I saw it when Vabbi imploded from small into a handful (15 players on all maps together in the last months before world linking) and I see it again with some of the servers we are being linked to.

The key to good defence is to be prepared. Why would you stand and watch? Activate your shield generator, fire off your defensive trebs, catapults, ACs, laugh as the blob runs through the spaced out supply traps into the poison supply removing field of your treb. A small force can very easily make a blob have a bad day.

If you find the other side has a bigger blob, split up. Slow their blob by stripping it of supplies, have your defences ready and instead of waving like a wallflower on the wall watching it go down, go back cap and split team them so their zerg is useless.

Smaller defending forces can do plenty- just be mobile, be prepared to die quite a bit and suicide their siege. I’ve lost count of the number of times a couple of us have managed to wipe a blob’s siege by suiciding it.

By the way, off-hour caps also allow to recap your home border, when you’ve lost it. Better allow flipping stuff back than being stuck in the same sad state for the whole week.

Sanctum is one of the nicest jumping puzzles in the game. It’s pretty quiet, but I find it’s part of the charm.

Perhaps some constructive info: In Alpine and EB, each spawn has 3 exits. It’s nearly impossible to cover all of them. If you are being focused too much, go to other borders to draw attention. Let a small team recap.

One more thing: it’s more of a lucky guess when blink and other teleports are working, in particular the alpine borderlands. As a rule of thumb, you can not blink from the grass up the stairs and vice versa, but there are exceptions to it (For instance the stairs in south bay allow a blink to the upper ledge, but only more to the right). It makes skills like steal, illusionary leap or unrelenting assault extremely unreliable.

This is a game breaker as well between the lag and inconsistent teleports. You never know what you are going to get with certain skills.

By the way, if there’s interest by the devs, I offer to organise a list of these spots.

If there is really a high demand of spanish speaking players, let’s introduce a second spanish language server and offer free transfers from BB for the first 200 people or so. If they are growing too big, they will just get linked to an international server instead if each other.

Actually GW2 mesmers have what you think is missing:

  • Mind Wrack: F1
  • Cry of Frustration: F2
  • Chaos Storm: Staff 5
  • Confusing Images: Scepter 3
  • Mirror Images: Utility

The skills exist… now to the lore part: not every profession / race combination has a role model. But just because there’s no human engineer in the main storyline doesn’t mean they don’t exist. The same holds for asura mesmers.

  • It seems that since the 17.1. patch, skill lag is even higher
  • A guild mate reported that WvW waypointing takes immense amounts of time – between 3 and 5 minutes
  • If i remember correctly, there are still points where leaping from outer to the inner keep is possible (there are demos on youtube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFiEIy41ub2fmnvY6f9G4I3Nb8y--IdlT ). I can’t find the video on how to leap to inner in the Alpine Garrison, but that should also be adressed. — Remark: I have not checked these bugs, but I believe they should be investigated.
  • (This is not exclusive to WvW but happens most often there) I have an i7-4600U (Haswell Generation CPU) with hybrid graphics (Radeon HD 8730M). In particular when using the Haswell GPU, getting a large number of people (20+) into the view drops the framerate from 25 fps to 1-5 seconds of complete pause. Enabling the AMD card reduces the timeout, but it is still very inconvenient. The effect can also reliably reproduced at the crafting stations in LA – a full 360 degree turn has multiple 1s+ hickups. Staying in place and rotating a second time is fluid again.

Identities of Linked Worlds

(1) Would depend a lot for what names are in the list. Whoever came up with Vabbolation deserves a medal But finding great portmanteaux for each server combination is pretty hard. I would be more inclined to see an abbreviation like AG/RoF (as mentioned above). The order could even indicate the original server, but that might be hard to implement.

Option (2) sounds like the low effort solution (i.e. easy to do, the team can focus on other stuff) but it might bring a lot of confusion: it takes some WvW experience to find out which color your server is. I also agree that it removes the identity even more – how would one advertise the server in PvE for example?

Option (3) might be the compromise to go: I don’t mind to be shown as another server to enemies, but if the second server is added in some situations like claiming or camp flipping, it might be nice. I guess how well this can be done depends strongly on the GW2 engine.

tl;dr
I’d prefer the shorthand double notation proposed by someone else in the thread. If not then (3) would be next on the list, (1) if the names are good. (2) sounds counter-prodocutive.

Anet, stop punishing the losing server

I’m not quoting the huge post – but I agree, giving the losing server the desert borderlands is extra punishment. Perhaps we should make the message to the devs simpler:

Please make losing fun.

The higher a dominating server must score to get up the less fun it is for a vastly weaker server. Being spawncamped by bored enemies is no fun. Getting the home border wiped every 30 minutes is no fun.

The reason why this is so important is that otherwise, people will just stop playing. Then nobody has fun anymore – WvW without enemies is boring.

If you’re in a guild, you can also collect an API key and check the server via an API request ( https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/API:2/account ). Nevertheless, that this is the easiest way to do it, is another argument that this feature would be very helpful. What do you think about a server tag ([FR],[DL],[VAB]) similar to guild tag?

Visibility of Linked Servers

I know you are collecting feedback to server linking in its own thread, but this post is not about the benefits and disadvantages of linking itself but about an effect of linking: linked servers are nearly invisible. The only way to find out the server of a player is to hover over them in a squad.

I think it would be great if there’d be more visibility for players of linked servers. Some ideas:

  • Add the server next to the guild tag [BOOM][Vabbi]
  • Make a title Vabbian Silver Raider you can display
  • Make the smaller server the “host” linked to the larger one from time to time. Then we’re also defending the Vabbi Garrison from time to time, not only other’s.

I think those things are pretty easy to implement and would give some nice QoL to the linked servers.

As mentioned elsewhere, the effect of transfers from/to Vabbi is greatly overestimated — I’m checking quite regularly who in my squad is from Vabbi and I recognize most of them. That was the case when we were linked with Desolation, the same for FSP and now with Gunnar’s Hold as well.

It’s easy to overlook the effects of Living Story and the frustration of fine-weather players on the WvW population. People who come for the Gift of Heroes reward track are gone as soon as they have it, too – or they come back when the matchup is better. Noone wants to be cannon-fodder all day long.

I wanted to address the idea of moving world linking to monthly instead of every 2 months, since it is being brought up more and more frequently.

The team isn’t opposed to this idea; we actually think it would be beneficial to move to monthly because it would allow us to iterate faster on how we are calculating which worlds should be linked. However, the main reason for not doing this right now is the matchmaking algorithm, Glicko. Each time we shuffle worlds via world linking it takes about 4 weeks’ worth of matches before Glicko begins to reliably match make those new worlds into balanced matches. If we did world linking monthly, Glicko would not be able to create balanced matchups.

Our next priority poll is going to be asking if players would rather have us work on adding rewards to skirmishes (and possibly other feedback items being collected from this thread) or replace Glicko matchmaking with a 1-up 1-down system (wherein the winner moves up a tier and the loser moves down a tier.) The 1-up 1-down system should work better with monthly linkings than Glicko, so we are most likely going to hold off on 1 month linkings until that system is in.

Another possibility we could pursue is 1 month linkings, but use the Glicko offset system to guarantee the matches. Alternatively, we could manually change Glicko ratings to what we believe they should be for each world. Either option would force worlds to start out closer to being in the correct tier and thus give better matches faster. These options are contentious, so even if everyone on the forums seemed to like this idea it would be something we would poll on.

How will you address the mass migration of players every time re-linking happens? Vabbi is a perfect example. It received a huge amount of transfers when it was linked with Deso and then FSP. Its increased population caused it to be linked with the lower ranked Gunnar’s Hold and then all those transfers cleared out and Gunnar’s Hold is basically not linked with any server right now.

I haven’t looked at the numbers but it seems nightcapping has less impact now – for the good or worse (don’t forget this is also a way a bottom end server can make some points if they have a better night-crew but not the numbers during daytime).

The other effect I have noticed is that there’s a higher pressure for the lead server to get a distance to the other servers. That means there’s more need for “easy” points which you can usually get from the weakest server i.e. the border of the weakest server is regularly wiped to get the points from the extra keeps. I admit I am still burnt out from the pre-linking period (I was trying to lead at least 3 evenings a week on Vabbi i.e. rallying people into fights against hopeless numbers), but this time, I just stopped trying – and apparently a lot of other GH / Vabbians too.

So whatever you decide, please have a look at the social dynamics too – e.g. you can have look at the statistics about the WvW participation points of players against the points and result of the current skirmish. Check if people move to different borders or PvE/PvP. Consider the change in strategies a server has to run in order to win a skirmish / matchup. And please don’t forget that demotivating the enemy to play is still the easiest way to win.

I guess the sum of GH and Vabbi population look good at link time. However what ANet did not considered was: Vabbi was full of #1 bandwaggoner, that simply moved away when linked to last instead of first rank.

The funny thing is, I only meet the Vabbians I’ve known for years, when I play WvW. Sometimes I duel them when they’ve moved on to AG But we’ve lost the couple of band-wagoners we had when we were linked to FSP, not Deso anymore.

Please don’t forget that living story came out and more PvE people are coming to play with the overhaul. That means people who are frustrated have better things to do than stay in hopeless WvW match-ups. The self-reinforcement of good streaks attracting players and bad streaks making everyone leave the sinking ship has a huge impact on population on its own, much more than bandwagoners.

That’s why I believe that server linking is a hot-fix which gives ANet some time to fix the population imbalance problems. As long as demotivating the enemy from playing is the most effective strategy to win, WvW will have problems.

Adding to the staff 2 comment, if you assign your about face key and practice…you can about face, staff 2, about face again to get across distances pretty quickly.

I have to admit, I omitted it because I found it a bit unreliable. The about face function sometimes does a 360 degree turn on my computer, effectively blinking me back instead.

Don’t forget the staff’s phase retreat – just target a critter(1), pass it by and push yourself forward.

In combat, there’s also sword’s illusionary leap to close in on an enemy. If you want to shake an enemy, run up some height, use continuum split before jumping down. Most likely the enemy will follow you down and you can continuum shift back up.

Finally, there’s portal, which allows you to return back to a place you have passed – especially helpful when you need to resupply fast to repair doors or you can skip over some walls on your way back(2) in WvW.

(1) A critter usually does not put you into combat mode which slows you down. With other enemies just make sure you are out of clone spawning range.
(2) For example, you can skip the wall between Necropolis and the NE camp on the desert borderlands. Not to speak of porting your team back into a keep where the walls were just closed.

Since nobody wants to play desert borderlands EB ends up with a crazy queue while the other maps are empty or full of semi-afk players waiting for their EB queue.

ArenaNet needs to quickly roll out the alpine borderlands. It would alleviate many of the concerns on this forum right now.

As a logician, my answer is simple: I want to play in the desert borderlands and I do that nearly exclusively, almost daily. Therefore your claim that nobody wants to play is wrong.

Please do not speak for all of us.

World Linking Beta

I’m Elona Reach (DE) and paired against Desolation +Vabbi. Yes, the Vabbi players aren’t as good as the Deso people. The problem I have atm is that it doesn’t matter how good they are if it’s 3 vs 1 in their favor.

I was trying to capture a camp today and two Vabbis came along. As a moderately skilled Wvw and PvP players I could hold my own against them … until a Deso popped up and I was dead.

(Qute shortened) As a Vabbi player, I can tell some similar stories about ER roamers. My explanation so far is that the WvW overhaul is attracting a lot of new WvW players who still have a lot to learn. I wouldn’t read too much into which server they are on but more e.g. if they run an elite spec or not.

In particular, I wouldn’t consider lower tier players to be worse – if you are 3 players defending the whole map, you just need different tactics and builds (e.g. much more mobility, if you encounter enemy players you’re at least 1:5 outnumbered and die anyway). People from the lower tiers need to get used to the situation (oh there is someone to call for help? and they come? how awesome is that!) whereas players from the upper tiers don’t need to adapt that much.

Therefore, happy learning and let’s keep up the good spirit for all of us :-)

This helped me in the past. When playing GW2, I have my Firewall and Antivirus software turned Off.

I would strongly advise against that – this means while you are playing, you are completely unprotected from attacks. The pain of getting rid of viruses / trojans is not worth the gain.

Use siege disablers on the cata until you managed to nuke it with aoe damage. It might not be “realistic” but there are easy counters.

Kind of how we can just cut off any cancerous body parts until it stops coming back?

I don’t see the point in a solution that cannot be used in reality. I also don’t see how it qualifies as an ‘easy counter’ if it can’t even pass ‘realistic’ muster.

The kind of unrealistic stuff that allows you to respawn when you’re dead. Didn’t happen in the middle ages but works well in games.

I’m not playing wvw this week, nor are loads of people on uw. Those that do are worried if we don’t have enough points we wont go up and will end up with the same match up. I salute them.
If you offer UW a merger with ROS and Vabbi and as I’ve suggested + a free limited time pass for the server. I’d bite your hand off- and we’d decide as a guild
as for the pots cracked rubbish the last time I got told to conceptualise by a consultant we got them back for free. We wouldn’t pay for them and when I finished nor would anyone else. I wouldn’t recommend something I wouldn’t take myself.

Respect for the concession :-) What came to my mind a few weeks ago was that if they really do the conversion to an alliance based system, I’d like to have a guild automatically created for each server. Then the servers are still visible and we have more flexibility with the team-ups.

It’s actually worse. People need the high tick or they are stuck in T9. This means, the current PPT mechanic leads to a lot of people quitting WvW, on both sides, the winners and the losers. I’m really scared, because there are regular complaints that winning doesn’t sufficiently pay off. If this is implemented, the dynamic will get even worse.

As long as you have sufficient people for a 600+ tick and to spawn camp the remaining 5-10 people playing against you with double+ numbers (e.g. yesterday’s whole evening) I’m more surprised anyone wants to play with you at all. Asking for the dissolution of other servers is quite telling. Perhaps we should propose to divide the players of UW between Vabbi and RoS instead. If you don’t like it, there’s obviously something wrong with your original request.

in EU, the bottom 2 servers are basically empty as an UW player (probably “just maintenance”) says we are back against vabbi and Ros. Blacktide had them last week and steam rolled up, and although we came second this week down we go in a zombie match up.
People are already saying they won’t bother with WVW this week… and it’s not started!
please can you roll up the bottom tiers I don’t mind if 26+27 go into 25 and 24 to keep it fair, or both into one or god bless you- you use stats(?). As long as the servers are kept whole, can’t see they would argue . We’d love to have em.

I can’t see why you wouldn’t. If you roll a server give them all a free one off transfer to compensate their ’t’s+c’s’ and we are done.

See, this is the mentality that bothers me. No server should be able to get 600 PPT on other servers from that same tier. What it points to is a mis-balance and the overemphasis of PPT.

The most important things for me are a) community and b) less frustration. I want to play with together with my friends (right now that’s my server) against about equal enemies.

The situation in T9 right now is that UW or BT need their 600+ tick to move up to T8 again where Vabbi and RoS can’t do anything apart from night-time (when there more equal fights than 3 vs 20) or PvD.

Bonus points if they introduce mechanics which reward witty playing over numbers.

Use siege disablers on the cata until you managed to nuke it with aoe damage. It might not be “realistic” but there are easy counters.

My priorities:

1) Fix class balance – less CC (especially aoe CC like DH’s Hunter’s Ward) and balance the power creep introduced with HoT – there are much more people in WvW zergs than in other games which amplifies imbalances extremely

2) Fix population imbalance, but consider server pride. Even if you disband servers altogether, at least create a guild per server and put people in there, as soon as they have entered WvW

3) Overhaul the desert borderlands: don’t revive the alpine borderlands, but make its advantages work in the DBL: improve the importance of roaming, make keeps smaller, make the environment less of an obstacle and a bit simpler (e.g. finding the stairs down on top of the fire keep without the map is still a problem for me, there are so many stairs around wind keep, i’m always running up the wrong ones and they all look the same to me) and with more open spaces

4) Consider big and small groups for balancing

5) Rework WvW guild upgrades that they are available for small scale (<10 ppl) guilds

If such a central person leaves, it will leave a gap which can’t be filled by a newcomer. That someone experienced from the team steps in and freshly hired people are slowly built up is an understandable move. In any case, a developer change of this impact throws back a project by months. Not sure if current WvW has that long, but I don’t think they have much of a choice.

The least they should do is to bring in one bronze, silver and gold league guild. The issues there quite different. I’m pretty sure they never tried to defend the new borderlands with 3 people.

I’m not sure how many of you are aware, but Anet is actually developing things for wvw. The fact that we’ve heard nothing about it is one things, but I’m here to (maybe) stir up some drama about a different aspect of this.

Anet has been inviting guilds to participate in the ‘beta’ or whatever you’d call it for WvW changes. However, of the 2 guilds I know that were invited, 1 still plays the game and it is a PvE guild. The WvW guild that I know has been invited died almost half a year ago and few of its members still play.

HOW IS THIS A THING THAT IS HAPPENING? What part of game development has its developers draw a group to test it from outside the population currently playing the content? I get maybe drawing in a few PvE folks to test things, but for the most part, when it comes to a WvW update, why do you not get actual (and current) WvW players to test things? We know the kind of kitten that went down if EotM and the desert borderlands. If Anet honestly thinks that they can pull the same kitten and get a better result, I feel even more sorry for the state of this game.

We were attempting the Oasis Collection guild mission with six persons yesterday and made the progress bar go to 3/3. Nonetheless, the mission failed when the time had run out.

If I remember correctly, two weeks ago we were doing the same collection mission without problems. Can you look into that?

I’ve wondered instead of merge – rotating teams of servers each week. S1 + s24 vs s2 + s23 vs s3 + s22 etc….

You get variety based on pairings (not always s1 + s24).
You don’t lose your server identity if that is important to you.
You don’t lose your server ts or website.
You continue to play wth who you are used to – just extra peeps.

Mate we got 18 servers in EU…
Also.. I got 3-10 people in zergs when I command in Black Tide (EU) this is gross and really annoying. I really like the server’s name.
And to be honest we don’t need to merge the servers. We need season to bring the filthy casuals to play the mode. There is no reason to play wvw unless you’re a big fan of the mode. Most of the pve grinders out there don’tfind it fun because you don’t gain anything by playing it.

I know what I am saying is bad for T1 and other higher servers.. but Black Tide used to have server population on high/very high before the new way of counting the numbers by wvw activity. All of the players on the server are just afking somewhere waiting for their raid of champ chain or whatever these hobos are doing.
Either merge the server, that’ll make me cry inside or make some changes that will make the sheeps take interest in wvw.

On Wednesday you had a nice setup going, though, with some effective surprise attacks :-) I completely agree that getting PvE / PvPers is of higher importance than server merges. When I see long time WvWers running in EOTM instead, there’s more wrong than just the server size.

Honestly if Anet reverted stability in WvW it would reduce the toxicity and lack of faith in these forums by 83%.

But it would bring the old problem back again. Whoever can maintain perma stab will get the upper hand aka the heavy frontline meta.

The only solution I can think of for this stab problem is separating skills between wvw, pvp and pve. Or making someone’s immune to cc for a few secs after casting stunbreaker

Between Dh traps, CoR, Mesmer wells(making ppl invulnerable),true shot and gunflame i doubt it’ll be as big of a problem as it was back then

The Mesmer Well of Precognition was already fixed with the last balance upgrade. Mesmers are already used to stuff like that, but imagine the outcry of Dragon Hunters if their traps were nerfed.
