Full trait preview made me a little sad.

in Engineer

Devinchi.2756

I only have big issues with two of these traits.

First of all, the reflecting turrets has no synergy at all with the other turret traits in the inventions line. Autotool and Metal plating both increase the survivability of turrets and encourage them to be left out til they die. However, Fortified turrets only triggers when they are placed, meaning we get the most use of the trait by picking them up as soon as the bubble goes down. RTB gets you more mileage the longer your turrets stay out, so it would be the obvious choice if you take the earlier turret traits in the inventions line.

Second, our new gadget trait feels so lazy. Engi can already get so many boons going through elixirs, traits, combofields, and now even turrets. Why can’t this gadget trait be more creative? It is far from a build defining trait that GMs supposedly are meant to be. Instead it feels more like a " I’m running only gadgets so I guess I have to take this one" kind of trait.

We have way too many good traits in the tools line, and not enough in the others.

Wat?

Yeah, the only good trait I can think of is Static Discharge, and that’s insanely buggy.

Eh, disregard my last post. I was mixing up other traits with the wrong line >_<

We for sure need more gadget traits. I feel like gadgets currently are in a fairly good spot, but the lack of traits to support them is what makes other utilities more attractive. I’d like to see some traits like

Using a gadget recharges it’s respective toolbelt skill.

Also, maybe put some of these traits in the inventions line. We have way too many good traits in the tools line, and not enough in the others.

New Dire stats - What do you think?

in Engineer

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

I think this is an awful stat combination to add to the game. Condi damage from a rabid set is hard enough to deal with, but now you can get that with the defensive strength of a soldiers set. How is that even remotely balanced?

This thread sums up the issues with conditions quite well:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/massive-condition-bias

In terms of engineers, not much will change. Our already great condition builds will become even more popular and powerful, while our mediocre glassy power builds will phased out of any form of PvP.

I find that the engineer profession doesn’t have the immediate appeal that some other classes have, which is why you see so few of em. Instead, we seem to be a class that grows on people and convinces others to roll one as an alt as they play alongside other engineers and see just how great they can be.

Stop the Cheating and Match Fixing in Races!

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

Devinchi.2756

Like the OP, I won’t throw a race just so others can get a single achievement. That said, I have no problem with people trying to set up races as long as they understand that not everyone may feel the same way. However, winning the race as many times as you can is not a mortal sin like many seem to make it out to be. The people who get angry when I decide not to play along with the “everyone’s a winner” mentality that are the problem. The entire minigame was made to be competitive, so why should I make an exception for somebody who wants an achievement that they can’t get?

Players need to quit being so obsessed with getting achievements that they scapegoat blame to someone/something else if they can’t get it. Just look at crabtacular, obsidian sanctum kite and cache, aetherblade dungeon canon dodging and laser jumping. If you can’t complete something whether it’s too hard or impossible due to bad lag or whatever, just forget about it and move on.

Make outmanned players worth no wxp/loot

in WvW

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

Giving even more boosts for the outmanned is the way to go. Otherwise all you’d achieve is making players leave WvW, and that’s not what we want, we want more of them to log on, but on the outmanned side. The current buffs are silly. It should be at least:

200% MF (as we know from southsun, it really isnt that much at all)
no damage on death
+200% WxP, karma, gold from events
permanent protection buff (-33% incoming damage)
permanent swiftness (
33% speed)

That would bring many people from EB to each battleground, and spread the forces evenly. And it’s not OP in any way, in a 20 vs 5 fight, you won’t notice the buffs anyway.

Direct stat buffs are a bad idea. You say so yourself that nobody would notice the buffs in largely outmanned fights, so the only fights perma protection and swiftness would really help with is with small fights between even numbers. Why should fair fights be skewed because one server doesn’t want to show up and fight? This would only encourage more zerging because there’s no way to fight a half competent group with such a handicap other than to bring more numbers.

Obsidian Sanctum for achievement, really? [merged]

in Sky Pirates of Tyria

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

Why do people keep calling this a PvE achievement when it’s in a WvW map?

A jumping puzzle is still a jumping puzzle, whether there be WvW players or not.

Allow WvW to take place in a dungeon and it’s still a dungeon.

Being located inside WvW does not change what it is

What makes jumping puzzles exclusively PvE content? In fact, what makes Living Story achievements exclusively PvE content? There has always been achievements tied to both PvP and Living Story, such as dragonball and crab toss. Every time such a mini game exists, PvE exclusive players get upset that they can’t complete these achievements because they have to compete against other players to get them. I was actively preventing people on the other team from getting dragon ball wins for an achievement by killing them, so does that make me a griefer? How is this achievement any different?

The dragon ball achievement didn’t count toward getting the reward, in that case the wings. In this case, the mini.

People griefing in the JP are stopping others from getting the meta achievement and the mini reward. Playing in the dragon ball only stopped people from getting one achievement not tied to anything.

But you don’t need to complete this one for the meta either.

In the end, we need to realize that we are not automatically entitled to every achievement in the game. Just look at the forum posts complaining that “X is impossible” or “Y takes forever to get”. If one tries to accomplish something but can’t or chooses not to, why should that person earn an achievement for it? How many people went akitten dragonball so that they could get the completion achievement and ruined the game for those on their team actually playing the game? How many have participated in rigged crab toss games to take turns getting a crabtacular?

It’s people like this who are complaining on the forums, and people like this I have no sympathy for. If you want to get an achievement that requires you to get to the end of a jumping puzzle in WvW, where it is quite clear that anyone is free to attack you and 90% of the obstacles are present only if activated by other players, then you have to deal with everything that entails. If that’s still too much, then forget about it and move on.

Lowering condition duration is absurd

in WvW

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

I find it funny that the spvp forum is filled with people crying about how OP condi necros apparently are while the condi necros are here complaining about how OP condition reduction is.

There are in fact rune and food combos that reduce the direct damage you take. It’s called toughness and protection. There is absolutely no way to reduce condition damage itself, so conditions are mitigated by duration reductions instead. Also, besides doing damage to siege, condi builds aren’t any less effective than power builds in WvW.

About Engineers with Automated Response, of course it does well against a purely condi necro. The sole purpose of that trait is to protect against conditions. Good thing you’re playing WvW, where you’ll have an entire zerg or even just 1 person in your small man group that has a power build who could sneeze on an engi under 25% health and down him, right?

That’s the build I’ve been trying out in PvE and WvW, as I’m not much for sPvP. I’ve had good success with it overall and am having tons of fun with the improvements to gadgets, especially to the rocket boots. With Sitting Duck, Incendiary Powder, and Rocket Kick, I have rather reliable access to 5 conditions on my own to boost rifle damage with Mod Ammo. Add to that Rifle Mod and a fast 20 stacks of vuln with analyze, jump shot, and net shot and you’ll get some absurd crits with jump shot and blunderbuss. With the low cd on the toolbelt skills and a focus on damage, static discharge is a no-brainer. Sometimes I like to toss in slick shoes in place of pbr or utility goggles especially in larger WvW fights. Superspeed+slick shoes+rocket boots =a massive line of knockdown, and gets you some hilarious results if used to either run away or lead a charge through a zerg.

Torment- As long as it stacks duration instead of intensity and is difficult to apply, I think I’ll be ok with it. Otherwise it could be crazy op against melee classes and those with little condi removal.

Stunbreakers- Does this mean we might see some on kits and turrets? That would open up a lot of possibilities!

Weakness- I wonder how elixir gun 1 is affected by it.

I only have a problem with our #2 skill. It’s a projectile based single target interrupt, which means the effectiveness of it is removed with stability/stealth/blind/invuln/aegis AND projectile blocks/body blocking (ranger pets, necro minions, clones, etc.). Only warriors are in the same situation as we are. Meanwhile, thieves, mesmers, and eles get a guarunteed stomp delayer, rangers and guards get an aoe interrupt WITH a faster cast time, and while necros have a fairly poor 2, at least it isn’t a projectile.

tldr: Our 2 skill has the longest cast time, easiest to avoid, and only affects a single target. I have no idea how that could be considered balanced.

After thinking about it, I feel like our downed state is meant to be a “support” downed state. The chills and weakness on the 1 skill doesn’t pump out damage that could help us rally, but it is probably annoying to enemies fighting against teammates. The pull is basically sacrificing yourself to get someone off of your buddy. As for our 3 skill, well, engineers explode stuff, so it’s only fitting.

That said, I still think it’s a silly concept since being able to prolong your own death is of much more benefit to your team, but whatever. That’s my two cents.

Might Stacking.

in PvP

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

engies already pay some unquantifiable versatility tax that reduces our base damage on all of our weapons and kits.

might stacking is the mechanical method the engie adopts to overcome their inherent disability to be able to compete with other classes for dps spots in teams.

the question ought to be to look at whether a fully stacked HGH engie is on par with a shatter meet or theif or ele for straight dps output.

This pretty much sums it up. We have 3 traits that give us might, with 2 of em being 30 point traits. It’s really clear that engineers are meant to rely on might for high damage. I fear what would happen to the class if they target specifically and engi’s ability to stack might on a class that already struggles to compete with the damage output of other classes.

Another thing to note with an HGH engi is that they aren’t burning all of their elixirs on cooldown to maintain max might stacks. Elixir S, toss S, and Elixir H are used when the situation calls for it as opposed to chugging for a couple stacks of might. Additionally, you have to take into account that every time you use an elixir cooldown you sacrifice a condition removal, so you have to decide between when you want the extra damage vs saving to remove a potentially deadly immobilize or burn.

If something absolutely had to be nerfed, I hope anet would be wise enough to consider the duration runes and sigil of battle before targeting engineers specifically.

How an engi can escape from zerg?

in Engineer

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

Engineers don’t escape in the same sense that the classes you’ve played before do. Instead of blinks, shadowsteps, and stealth to increase our mobility, the engi relies largely on hindering his opponents mobility. Engineers have a ton of snares such as glue shot, glue bomb, box of nails, net turret, net shot, freeze nades, etc. Combine that with easy access to perma-swiftness, and very few classes will be able to keep up.

On backpack regenerator, it says it does not show regeneration boon. Does this mean you still get the health regeneration but it does not show or that there is no regeneration applied? I never see regeneration and just assumed the trait didn’t do anything, but if it does regen then I’ll keep it.

Backpack Regenerator and the Regen boon are two different things. You can see the healing that the trait does if you have a kit equipped while you aren’t at max health. Green numbers will show similar to how regen behaves, but no other indicator outside of that. Also, since they are separate, both healing from the boon and the trait can be going on at once.

Engineer Turrets Traits Broken

in PvP

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

If I recall correctly, thieves got one of their broken traits fixed within a day.

Yes, but that was with something that was actually being used. The nice thing about having a set of utility skills that isn’t strong enough to use is that if those skills are also bugged, it doesn’t really hurt anyone’s gameplay.

I won’t deny that turrets are still lackluster, but I’ve seen some solid turret bunkers out there prior to this latest patch. I just don’t see how a patch can unintentionally wipe out an entire set of traits and not be fixed or even officially acknowledged immediately, especially since Anet has done so previously for situations of a lesser magnitude.

It’s even a bigger deal that already mediocre utilities are suffering from such a bug because as devs have stated in many SOTG interviews, their method of balancing revolves largely around bringing weaker specs up to par. Turrets have been receiving incremental buffs over the past few patches, but none of that matters when the greatest weakness of turrets (survivability and damage) are worse now than they have ever been.

Rabid seems to be the general consensus for a standard HGH build, but I’ve been running Rampagers armor with Carrion trinkets on my wvw HGH build. I chose that setup because I prefer to have more of a balance between condi and direct damage, especially since grenades perform well when specced for either kind of damage. Additionally, siege isn’t affected by conditions nor can they be crit, so with some investment in power that I get from Ramp/Carri gear, I can knock down cannons/arrowcarts/ballista much quicker. You sacrifice some defense, but you can usually get around those issues with some smart play and being careful in picking your fights.

Discuss:Zerker or PVT gear in WvW guild zergs

in WvW

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

It really depends.

The way I look at it: soaking up damage is great and all, but you’re holding yourself back from being effective if you can’t do much damage to help down other players.

But then again, this all depends on the build, profession, group size, server, tier, etc etc etc.

This is how I feel too. If you can find a build that does decent damage with PVT, then that’s great. However, I feel that having enough offense to finish fights rather than drawing them out longer is of greater benefit in the long run.

I prefer using set that are mostly offensive with a defensive stat thrown in, but If I absolutely had to choose between zerk and PVT, I’d choose zerk.

It's time to nerf Engineers.

in PvP

Posted by: Devinchi.2756

Devinchi.2756

I suppose I’ll add my two cents on the topic.

If an engi is using all his elixirs on cooldown in order to stack might pre-fight, that means most of them aren’t ready for the condition cleanse when a nasty burn or immobilize is up. I’d also like to add that outside of the 409 trait, engineers have awful condi cleansing with the exception of Elixir C. Secondly, engineers only real option for high damage is might stacking. We have 3 traits designed for stacking might, 2 of them being 30 point traits (HGH and Juggernaut). Traits that high are meant to have builds made around them. I fear that nerfing HGH further would only add to our list of completely useless traits. The only way a nerf to the engineer’s ability to stack might would be justified is if we got a damage buff to nearly every skill we have. Until that happens, this kind of stuff is what you should expect from an engineer, unless they opt to be a 3rd rate bunker

Engineers make good jokes:

An optimist sees the glass half full. A pessimist sees the glass half empty. An engineer sees a glass twice as big as it needs to be.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers? Mechanical Engineers build weapons; Civil Engineers build targets.

How many engineers does it take to change a light bulb? No one knows, they never figured it out.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

How many Software Engineers does it take to change a light bulb?
None, thats a hardware issue.

An electrical engineer, mechanical engineer and software engineer are on their way to a trade show when their car stalls and they are forced to pull over to the side of the road. The mechnical engineer says, “it’s probably a mechanical problem. I’ll get my tool box out of the trunk and I can fix it.” The electrical engineer says, “no, I’ll bet it’s an electrical problem. I have my multimeter with me and I’ll go check it out.” Finally, the software engineer says, “Let’s close all the windows, then open them back up again, and everything will work.”

Considering i’m studying mechanical engineering, I appreciate these jokes very much!

haha support this one 100%! not many know how to fight us or what to expect! love being the underdog and we’re fun!! also we can adapt to any situation just by changing 1 skills ( kit )!

This is absolutely true. As a big WvW player, I can tell you that nobody expects engineers to be able to apply 10 stacks of confusion in two attacks, outburst thieves with a static discharge, or be nigh impossible to bring down in a fair fight. I’ve made friends on both mine and opponents servers because they’ll ask how I’m able to pull off some of the stuff that I do. We may have our flaws, but only the very skilled few now what those weaknesses are.

I also feel like we have more to experiment with in terms of possible builds. I have 3 different sets of armor and about 5 different builds that I like to swap between, and I’m still determined to find the next cool thing for the engi. In fact, the trait trainer has probably taken more of my gold than the armor repairs!

You have to make peace with the fact that SF doesn’t give a kitten if they have a fair even fight. They want the win, the ego pat themselves on the back boost of the top spot on the scoreboard. They will claim it’s not numbers all day long, while everyone knows different (they did the SAME thing in t8 when they first got there – I was there). They want that precious wxp and the bragging rights to 30 bags around an arrow cart after 2 hours of pressing 1 at a choke point.

Today a thought occurred to me, I wondered the following. Why after spending months in t8 knowing they outnumbered them SO much, knowing they would never fight out of the ratings hole of t8 all the while claming to love and respect the players of ET and FERG so much. Why then, did they not do the sensible thing and split up some guilds amongst FERG and ET and balance out the tier. Why instead beg ANET to put them in the same position in another Tier where the game is boring and called before it starts.

SF could have easily shuffled a few guilds, balanced t8 and be having a super fun fair match with all the people they love so much. Meanwhile t7 could still be having our close fought love affair we grew so fond of.

But instead, ego got in the way, the insane drive to gain that higher tier status that is the same thing as the lower tiers. The need to go up to t7 and say HAH we have better tactics – ahem numbers then you!!! WE RULE YOU SUCK!!

all my opinion of course….

Perhaps guilds didn’t transfer to ET and FG because they don’t want to leave behind the server they played since launch? Server pride is a perfectly valid excuse for not wanting to leave. It took us forever (and with a little intervention) to get out of tier 8 because of the way the ratings work, not because we apparently the “least skilled” server in the game.

Even if we are currently winning tier 7 because of numbers, then it only makes sense that we fight on a tier that lessens that advantage If that tier is higher than the one we are currently in, then while its unfortunate, we have to go through you guys first. Sorry.

If you claim we are unskilled, then the only way for that to change is for you guys to show us that what we’re doing isn’t effective. Our zerg can best learn new things through failure. In fact, after failing to take the garrison on NSP, one of our commanders at that fight said “We had a good run everyone. This reminded us we aren’t in Tier 8 anymore.” Therefore, I challenge both NSP and HoD to make us a better server.

As for people’s attitude on these forums, it’d be best for everyone not to take them as representative of entire guilds/servers. This goes for all three sides. Letting this mindless spewing of who’s better than who is ridiculous. Sure, winning, score, and potential points get you nothing in the end, but neither does insulting others ability to play or proclaiming how much more skilled one is over everyone else. In the end, all of us play this game for the same reason.

PS: I spotted you and Nausicca in our Lion’s Arch today. Hope you made yourselves at home, and I hope to see your guild in the battlefield in the future. If you’re as good as you say you are, it’ll be a challenge I eagerly await.

It’s even more gruesome if you’re rocking a flamethrower engineer and toast 3 baddies at once. Such a beautiful sight!

I see a lot of “need an ele” and “need a mesmer” requests in WvW. Either give each profession a unique niche role in WvW or make the things like portals and siege blocking more accessible to more classes.

This times a million. It’s frustrating that the effectiveness of golems is directly related to how many mesmers are present, and that a single mesmer hiding in a keep is the difference between being able to mount a proper offense or losing it with the outer wall still intact, while no other class has the ability to sway the tide of WvW as effectively. Elementaltist’s ability to block siege gives them something unique to contribute to WvW, and should therefore stay as it is. Other classes should be able to contribute in equally uniqe ways that directly affect the mechanics of WvW.

The main problem with this idea is that having teammates negatively impact your experience gain is just wrong. People would start blaming allies for leeching exp off of them, which is kind of opposite of what the whole game is about. If you started soloing a supply camp, and a random player passes by and decides to help, would you tell him to leave because he’s cutting your exp gain in half?

It definitely shows on the battlefield. For the past few days, there were lots of comments on our side along the lines of “I’ve never seen so many fergs on the same map!” Makes for amazing fights, that’s for sure!

Discovering your Main

Engineer is my main, and I knew it would be since the class was announced. I’ve always been one to choose the least magical class in fantasy style games, and nothing fits that roll better than the engi.

After playing him, I love the possibilities the class brings. I have tons of unique and fun builds to choose from. Swapping between kits and weapons with no cooldown is so amazing that I find it difficult to play a more standard class with 2 weapon sets and a 10 sec cooldown on swapping.

Plus, I enjoy playing my engi in WvW because we’re such a rare class I find most people don’t know how to fight one, resulting in rather amusing fights. Being so unpredictable is deadly.

Sorta off topic

But my Engi cannot hit jormag or his ice wall with 1200 traited Rifle but my ranger with short bow in the same spot can hit both easily, it also claims 1200 range?

Is Engi bugged..

I believe the difference is that arrows fly along a projectile path, allowing them to technically hit at slightly longer ranges than the rifle’s bullet, which flies straight and will flat out disappear after 1200 range.
