Current owners can use a new account and get the exact same deal if they were so inclined. Start like a newb or enjoy your 3 years of progression and rewards. The choice is yours. But it is a choice.

The people complaining on forum, I can guarantee you most of them will but HoT they second they hear people talking about it after release. This is what happens every times.

They wont buy HOT because they dont have money. If you cant afford something you wont buy it. Its simple. People who have money dont give a kitten about the price.

I am probably earning more money than your whole family kiddo. But it doesn’t make me kim kardashian that throws money every single, overpriced, idiotic stuff unlike you.

If true, you’re extremely wealthy and complaining about 10 bucks. From a company that has given you a mmo for 3 years with no monthly payments or pay 2 win features. You’re that wealthy and you fail to see the value in HoT?

What is this give? When did GW2 go FREE to play from BUY to play?

To many of us mmos traditionally had monthly fees associated with the use of said mmos servers and support staff. Anet changed that for many and did so without giving rich people a significant advantage in the game.

You conveniently left that part of my sentence excluded.

Is it really that bad for the Vets?

1. You’re being intentionally pedantic, you know full well the value of your account comes from how developed an account is overall and in comparison to other players. So HOT needs to be applied to my existing account. So I’ll restate it just to be clear, a seperate CD-key (so that it’s of use to a vet) with for the vanilla only or 800 gems/charslot.
- I know I value it at more than 10 bucks. Point proven. Next!

2. The character slot is not exclusive to the new players, so I’m not sure what your point is here? It is still an opportunity cost.
- The point is you said a duration of time would be required to accumulate the gold to buy gems to unlock a new character slot or even upgrade to deluxe edition. This in your mind was unfair because you could be doing something immediately beneficial to your character like a new player would be doing. However this new player will be spending significantly more time to reach 80 and accumulate wealth than it would take someone like you with several 80 level characters already existing. As you suggested this could take only a few days. Much sooner than time remaining before the release of HoT.

3. They have every right to complain/comment they are still a customer. Since it has apparently been forgotten gaming is a Skill based activity, the single most important symbol of your worth is how skilled you are at the game not how much money you’ve chucked at it. Just because you’ve thrown money on gems it does not give your voice any more weight.
- Everyone has the right to an opinion. The portion of the community that has been supporting this game for years will pay for HoT without question. Those that have loved the game and cannot afford HoT will find a way. And those that are neither of the previously mentioned groups will complain on forums.

Add Anet continuing to sell the core game while their FAQ falsely stated owning it was required for HoT. I think that is the dirtiest thing they’ve done in this mess.

They have already offered refunds going back 30 and in some reported cases 60 days on GW2 purchases towards HoT upgrades. They changed their mind on how they wanted to distribute the game which made it way easier for new players. I bought my second account during the 10 dollar sale. Do I feel slighted? No.

Arguments:

1. This is a poor representation of the argument. New players are getting a vanilla copy of the game, despite what anyone says, this has value. The existing players would like to get the value out of this too. Either by the key (literally the same as the new players) or 800 gems/extra character slot (both of comparable value to the base games lowest price)
- You can have the exact same thing. HoT will be applied to the new account.

2. Opportunity cost, the 5 hours I’d have to spend farming that gold could have been put to other use if it had been given with the HOT package. The person who did just straight out buy it has also just gained 5 hours on me in that time.
- A new player will spend days getting a single character to 80 and probably weeks or months before a decent amount of wealth is accumulated.

3. Liking something for what it did and blind fanaticism are very different. Each purchase should be considered on it’s own, maybe they felt that 20 euro was worth it at the time, but have decided the hot purchase is not currently. Also do not assume people have large amounts of money to spend, remember people in fairly dire financial situations play MMO’s too (large number of hours of content for a relatively low initial price generally)
- I do not assume anything. Those that have been playing for 3 years without spending any real world currency should not complain at all. Ever.

Greed, negativity, and hatred are the most common forms of communication on forums.

Arguments:

1) Base game is free to new players = slap in face to veterans.
– A veteran would be happy with this, not disappointed as it instantly eliminates the pay wall for new players entering our digital world. A veteran player would recognize that the years of enjoyment this game has already provided with living world, seasonal events, and limited duration items is much more valuable than a new player version of the game. If that wasn’t true the veteran player would use their HoT purchase as a second account while farming laurels with their veteran account.

2) No character included with the basic version of HoT.
– This veteran would also understand that a character slot can easily be purchased (or HoT can be upgraded to deluxe edition) using in game gold. This in game gold can be accumulated in a short amount of time playing the current content quite easily.

3) HoT is not worth $50.
– A truly devoted veteran would have shown support to Anet over the past 3 years by purchasing gems with real money. In turn this devoted veteran would be getting very little additional content with those purchased gems. 20, 30, 40 or infinite dollars of real money have been spent by actual devoted GW2 veterans on skins, minis, and other cosmetic tools. To these devoted veterans a purchase of $50 for actual content is a blessing!

The pre purchase numbers for HoT will prove to all the truly enormous amount of dedicated players in the GW2 community. Do not for 1 minute believe that opinions like those of the forums are shared by the majority of the “veteran” or even the new player base.

@Vayne of course they can. Something is only worth what it can be sold for.

At $50 Anet will sell X of the expansion
At $30 Anet will sell Y of the expansion

The market determines which is is a greater return X or Y

I’m not saying you’re wrong but it’s literally 20 bucks dividing you between 3 more years (I assume) of content and making vilians out of the company that has brought you the amazingness that is gw2.

Anet White knight = anyone that does not agree with your perspective.

As a veteran player I’m glad they included the “base game” in the expansion for new players. GW2 is an mmo and the foundation of any mmo is a player base. In short, the game I’m playing needs people to survive and I fully understand and support the method Anet is using or provide that stability to the game world.

I agree with you that getting new players into the game is awesome. I haven’t seen a single person that shares my opinion on this matter saying otherwise. We argue from the logical viewpoint of rational and responsible consumers, rather than people are blindly loyal to this game franchise.

Can I upgrade to HoT and get the exact same product that a new customer can at the moment? The answer is no. No matter what you say, the literal, in your face via Anet marketing (and of course NCSoft higher ups) is that I cannot keep my current progress in the game while getting the same product as a new customer. It’s just as simple as that. I’m not asking for a price reduction on the current bundles. I’m just wondering why I’m not being treated as an equal. This is an argument about equality, not entitlement.

Actually the answer is yes. You would just have 2 accounts. I’m not saying this is ideal to you, but the value is still there if you choose to take it. I did not. I already have a second account that farms laurels.

The value is there for a new player. But I perceive no value in that bundle. My 2nd account that includes HoT would have absolutely no value to compared to the thousands of hours I played on my primary account.

I believe that’s the opinion a lot of people have right now that are expressing their concerns about the current packages. Honestly, it’s a bad precedent to set having bundles just like these for any future expansions too, because that means to get a good deal you’ll have to leave your primary account behind again and again. Imagine if for a second expansion they do the same thing. In order to continue getting the same value as new customers you’ll just be leaving accounts behind and having to level tons of alts on a new primary account to 80 and gearing them all over again, just to be able to have the same, equal, deal as a new customer. It’s not a very logical pricing scheme down the road now that I think about it. At some point Anet would need to create packages for pre-existing players, so I don’t understand why they don’t just start with the first expansion and set the precedent while they’re ahead.

The precedent being set is every 3 years you pay 50-ish bucks to play gw2. I see no problem with that.

Someone else want to explain how charging for the expansion, that includes the base game, is part of the package to him?

I’m convinced we’ve reached the point in this “debate” where the “Anet whiteknights” refuse to think as honest and responsible consumers and ignore logical observations.

I mean it’s fairly obvious just at initial glance that the base game is being sold as part of a bundle now, even if marketing says it’s for free. (Btw here’s a hint to determine if it is really being offered for free: Can you download GW2 base right now without purchasing an HoT bundle? No? Hmmm…)

Nah man. I’m not trying to get a refund. 10$ is a great deal and I will make the most of it. The base game is awesome. The goal of this post was to let people, especially the ones bent on defending the company, know what type of company they are really defending. I feel many people did not know about this and are too focused on the price of the expansion.

You played a current Gen mmo for 2 months at the whopping cost of $10.

My second account is a $10 account and I use it to farm laurels which makes a substantial profit in t6 mats. A solution to your problem would be to use the expansion purchase as a new account which would come with a new game and hot while leaving your 2 month old account to farm laurels. Upgrade it – if you want – when hot inevitably goes on sale in the future.

Erm, that’s not why many people are upset.

I expected kitten-$99 price tag. I budgeted for that. What’s kittening me off is that it includes the base game — I have no choice but to buy the base game — there is no other version.

This means that I, being a LOYAL customer, bought the base game, and then pay another $50 for the expansion. John Doe, however, pays $50 and gets both base and expansion. Which means because I am a loyal customer, I pay more.

I would have no problem paying the $99 if, instead of the base game, it was removed in favor of some sort of small kickback. Or, if there was a version of the expansion that was slightly cheaper/discounted if you already owned the base game.

Look at the Sims franchise. You CAN buy a base game+expansion combo, but it’s more expensive than the expansion alone.

Look at hundreds and hundreds of DLC on many, many other games. The DLC/Expansion/extras always (in my experience) have a separate, cheaper version without the base game. OR, provide some sort of special kickback for those already who own it.

This War of Mine gave me, who had bought the beta early access, the soundtrack free but made new players buy it. Or, FTL gave me the expanded edition since I already owned the game, but all new buyers had to buy it separately.

Over and over again, games make sure to make their old player base feels as valued as the new. Right now, that’s not how I feel. Right now i feel like Anet thumbed their nose at the old players (who are the ones who likely funded much of this expansion) and are ignoring us in favor of the new.

It isn’t the price tag. It’s the principle of treating your old player base like dirt. If you’re going to incentivize new players, you should do the same for those who have been with you and supporting you all this time.

So then it is the cost? As a veteran of GW2 I understand that a mmo needs an active player base and that active player base needs new players. As a veteran I am glad they are including the base game for the new people as it makes it much easier for them to jump into the game. Look at the bigger picture and dare I say it, stop being so selfish.

Already bought it and couldn’t be more excited about it.

People are all lying claiming that they won’t buy it and that everyone in their 250 person guild won’t buy it.. People are so sensitive and overreact to every little thing. I was hoping for 30-40 bucks tops too but 50 really isn’t bad at all.

Regular content updates since launch for free, an immense amount of new content for HoT and THIS GAME DOESN’T HAVE A MONTHLY FEE.

Everybody is more than entitled to their own opinions. However, I bought the game, I am incredibly excited to play it, and I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. Despite this argument and our differing opinions, I truly hope to see you all in game!

:D

Some people might. But I can count the amount of hours I’ve put into GW2 this year on one hand.

So while I am excited for the expansion I’m not exactly feeling an urgent need to play the game and I can wait as long as I need to to pay a price that I feel is appropriate.

Nothing wrong with that approach. I’m confident in the value and purchased already. There will be many others that do the same as you – and me.

Third, if your faith in humanity is based on the comments on a gaming forum, I suggest you follow your teacher’s advice instead.

There was no need for that level of ugly. We’re asking to know what we’re being asked to buy for that cost. Not for your first born baby.

Simmer down.

You’ll get information, be patient. They haven’t even announced a release date yet. The information available now may not be enough to deem the purchase of HoT worthwhile but many of us have been waiting for the prepurchase and bought it as soon as it was available.

Basic package cost: $30
Includes character slot
Includes 800 gems to existing players
Includes base GW2 content for new accounts

You guys see how ridiculous this is right? I’m joking about this thread but that’s what many, most, dare I say – all, of the complainers have asked for.

I get it. GW2 hooked us all by being fun and very inexpensive to play for nearly 3 years. Now you’re being forced to pay if you want the new content and money is tough to come by in this economy.

That being said, NC SOFT and Anet have families to feed to and the way they do that is through the sales of their products. $50 may seem like a lot to you but spread that over 3 years and it’s less than $20 per year. Compared to the only mmo more popular than GW2 you are saving $160 per year by having no monthly fees.

Whatever you’re saving they are losing in income compared to that other competing mmo.

You may not feel like the content currently announced for HoT is worth $50. You may feel like $50 should get you an expansion character slot. Or you may feel that if new players get the base game included you should be compensated. All of these are actually valid arguments but that’s not the point.

The point is its the first time since GW2 launched that Anet has asked you to buy content to support continued development of this wonderful game that most of us love, some of us enjoy, and others only play because it’s the best option or only option for them.

For $50 you are buying what will hopefully be a content and feature ridden expansion pack that will support Colin and the other Anet employees in their mission to provide us the most enjoyable mmo experience ever.

If you are not interested or cannot afford to support that cause, I understand and sympathize. Eventually more information will be released on HoT which may appease the “it’s not worth it” crowd and in the future I’m sure there will be a sale for the “it’s too expensive” crowd.

We are a strong community with tremendous support and a very high level of standards. Let’s do what we can as the best mmo community in the world to support our digital world.

Technically, Cure, that’s not correct. ANet told us that the core game was needed to play the expansion. So . . . people bought the core game beforehand. Heck, some bought it days before this release.

And now? You get the core game with the expansion. That’s three shades shady to more than few people who shelled out that money. You’re ‘soda and chips’ example is moot in that regard.

And yes, you do have the right to be angry. I’m not saying it is or isn’t justified. I’m just saying it’s why many people on the boards are peeved with this announcement is all. Again, if I bought something for forty dollars at Wally-World, and then the next day they gave it away . . . um . . . yes. I have the right to be angry.

Whether it’s a fair business practice is a different question.

I pre purchased the original game, played alpha and betas, contribute regularly to the gem store and bought the ULTIMATE option. Funny how $35 would make some of you happy. 10 is what it would take to make others happy.

Thanks for a great game over 3 years with no required pay walls, Anet. Thank you. You’re so greedy. Not asking for money and all that.

You can mow lawns for 20 bucks where I live. Suck it up.

I can get my extensive lawn mowed for much less. Where the heck do you live anyway?

Not arizona. A cab ride is 70 bucks. A bottle of whisky 50 bucks. A steak dinner with my wife, 120 easy.

Wow. TG I live in CA. But I must ask, what kinda whiskey?

Canada. I prefer rye whiskey so Gibsons Finest or Crown Royal. My perspective is a bit biased since the market I live in is fruitful at the moment. But the amount of rage and hate towards a company that has treated it’s players much better than any other game I’ve ever played over 50 bucks is aggravating.

Seeing as the game is already headed in the direction of the former based on the past few announcement cycles we’ve had, and the price point for what should have been in a feature patch two months ago + LS for free, the former is already happening.

So, essentially, you want the game to get to the point where Anet is paying you to play their game. Free content on top of free content on top of free content- because game development is notoriously low cost.

These are the same people that thought the xpac should be 10-15 bucks. Clearly more knowledgeable than any reasonable people that predicted $49.99. Does “kids these days” work well here?

why? For a PvE player like myself I think I made my points pretty well.

Besides that, if this is one of those posts attempting to justify reason for not paying 50 bucks (assuming the cost will not be 10 bucks like other extremely reasonable people I’ve seen comment on the subject) for added content to a game you’ve been playing or could have been paying for nearly 3 years with no mandatory fees is unjust.

Its not, never said it was.

Though the datamined price models were interesting. Think there were 3?
Prolly be the standard 30-40$ for an expansion but I wonder if the 50-60$ version will have anything worth owning or just a pile of killstreak boosters and black lion keys. lol

LS Season 2 will have less content than HoT. I’m going to out on a limb and say HoT will have more content than all of the living story and feature packs have provided thus far. Further to that, I think out of all 3 groups of players PVE will be getting the most content.

Revenants are missing the most obvious legend of all.

Think about who’s going to be the first: Rytlock Brimstone. The charr warrior. Now, think back to charr heroes of legend, and one REALLY stands out. Especially with Rytlock being in the position of trying to gather forces, get them to work together, and stand against a huge threat to them all.

That’s right. The Kahn-Ur. The legendary leader of the charr that shaped who they are today, much like Ventari did for the sylvari. And yet, there’s no sign of this legend anywhere! Why? This would be one of the FIRST Rytlock would channel, I would think.

Can anyone come up with a good reason why he’s not one of the legends a Rev can channel?

Oh man, I thought you were going to say Wooden Potato! He’s the only Guild Wars legend I can think of.

Activating him would be like riding one of those tour buses in NYC . Oh the lore!

This might be a good idea if your thread was “post your weirdest armor”. The way it is now you’re making fun of people.

It’s a good advice. You’ll get help ingame – forums are mostly full of whiners, haters and trolls. Well, not everyone here is unhelpful, but you know.

My only advice: Take the class with the playstyle you enjoy most. And buy new bags (10 slots) as fast as possible, because your starter bags won’t hold much.

How free is this game…..when you say buy bags, will i be able to use ingame gold and not micro transactions??

If you’d like some in game help add me to your friends list. I’ll show you the ropes.

Majority of players in game don’t even READ the forums let alone post on them. The whiners are definitely in the minority.

I don’t agree with any of your points in regards to them making this game broken. Something I literally play hours per week cannot be broken. A particular event on a specific server might be bugged, but idgaf anyways.

I don’t typically post on forums but gw2 has, in my opinion, the worst forum posting fan base out of any mmo I’ve played.

What does it boil down to? Your spoiled, no monthly fee, whiners have no regard for economics, finances, or the manpower differences between a game like gw2 and say…Wow.

They could literally stop adding content for free at anytime. You pay no monthly fee. What do they owe you? What other one time purchase game has given you the hours you’ve spent in gw2? The closest for me is Skyrim. And let me tell you about bugs!

If you are bored with the game, I get it. I’ve been there. Leave and come back and whine about missing content from a particular update. Or don’t. Just leave! Anet has your purchase money and it sounds like your just wasting server space.

Thank you, Anet, for pouring the time and effort you did into this amazing game that I’ve been playing more than any other game for nearly 3 years. You will continue to get my support in whatever minor way I can.

Why was AC changed first?

Right now AC is not hard. It’s nearly impossible for a group of 35’s to complete in a respectable amount of time. Get off your 80 exotic high horse and understand that AC is designed for, or at least WAS designed for, 35+ characters that are discovering explore mode dungeons for the first time.

I was pretty excited to see the new encounters yesterday after reading the updates. I can now say that I am extremely disappointed with them.

I took a break from GW2 for about a month or two. I came back because I missed exploring the world and interacting with the other players in the game. A huge part of my continuous attraction to the game in recent weeks has been the amount of FUN I’ve been having in AC.

This is a level 35 explorable mode dungeon that was still somewhat challenging for the casual 80 and required the players attention for most parts, especially for some. Kholer 1-shotting you if you failed to dodge his spinning sword, the Troll nuking you if you got caught in his stomp, making sure you had at least one stun break in case a scavenger or stalker decided to eat your face, and then the boss fights.

The boss fights, although quite easy now that I’ve played AC a couple hundred times at least, were fun, enjoyable, and still challenging. Sadly, this is no longer true. They are now Hard, Long, and Frustrating.

Being a 35 level dungeon I don’t see the point in destroying it the way you did. It makes it far too challenging for a group of experienced 35’s with guildmates and near impossible with a group of sub 40 pugs. People complained before the patch about the lack of willingness for groups to bring anyone under 80 and I’m not sure how this is going to change that.

If getting exotic gear, or gold, or whatever else was too easy in AC then perhaps the best approach would have been to increase the cost of the items you purchase with the tokens, reduce the amount of gold you earn, or other great idea. The current approach, although newly implimented, is in my opinion terrible.

I don’t want to take a break from AC, but I am. I don’t want to quit playing GW2 again because I was having a ton of fun running AC daily, but things are not looking good. The fun factor was very appealing with GW2, and there is still a bunch of other fun things to do, but taking the fun out of the activity that generated the most amount of fun in the game for me is a deal breaker.

Signed,

Frustrated AC Fan.
