I appreciate the help Ort but I’ve already been playing D/D ele in SPvP tourneys for weeks now and I do well. It’s not really a concern.
The point is, I’m basically impatient and just trying to steamroll to 80. I know all that stuff works, but I’m looking for something quick n’ easy to get me there with minimal effort, long story short.
So I’ll probably just craft my way up.
Or do the fast-lvling meta events (can do 43-48 VERY fast, for instance, in Hirathi Hinterlands with the centaur meta event), or get your guild to powerlevel you in dungeons.
No offense, but this entire post seems to be based around the fact that you can’t kill 5-6 mobs, at once, which for some reason you assume should be easy.
But I do think it should be easy. It’s what I’m used to on literally every other class I’ve played. 8l

Ah okay, thanks. I’ll try that.
And yeah I’m probably a little spoiled, my main is a greatsword guardian haha
Dagger/dagger is probably your best bet. Learn to do rotations of attunements
Here’s something to get you started,
Air 3 4 (target) 2 5
fire 3 2 5 4
earth 4 3 3 2 (5 if mobs are weak as kitten)
if you need healing water (heal) 5 4 3 2
otherwise, air again
Do this until you get evasive arcana, but by then it gets more fun and you can use earth roll as a blast finisher for might stacking, in water for healing and condition removal, air is useless (blind), fire too (fire nova – not a blast)Basic idea, fire + earth for damage/ might stacks
air for mobility/ closing gaps, running away, stuns/knockdowns
water for healing/ condition removal.
This is exactly what I’m currently doing. It works fine until I’m fighting 5-6 mobs at once [which should be easy] , then I get messed up.
Thanks, I appreciated it. What weapons would you say ease the pain most? I’ve only tried dagger/dagger, but I was thinking something ranged might be a little less dangerous?
So I’m leveling an elementalist. I’m up to 26 now and dagger/dagger isn’t really working for me. The damage is nice, and I have lots of healing, but I feel like I’m made of glass.
I was wondering, is there any particular setup that would smooth this out? I’m kind of in a rush to 80 to get back into WvWvW with my guild [this is an alt/reroll].
Bump for help, still unsure.
So I’m pretty new to D/D ele, decided it suits my ‘berserker’ style better than warrior and guardian.
That said, I’m still trying to grasp what the best way to approach PvP battles is.
So far, I start in Air with RTL to my target and dropping weakness on them. If I’m fighting one person, I then switch to fire and use blazing speed, ring of fire, fire breath, and then the 5 skill before proceeding to water do deal a bit more damage, and heal up some, repeat as needed.
Against groups, I go from air to earth, dropping my 2 skill, 4, then churning earth if I can manage it OR switching to fire.
Is there anything I need to know specifically? A certain rotation for dealing damage vs. single targets or groups, etc?
Okay okay I’m getting it

Cool thanks for the advice, cero!
Okay I don’t know what you mean about soothing disruption and elemental attunement, what is this condition removal I’m missing?
Hm okay, I’ll change soothing.
How’s this look?

Okay.
First off, what’s wrong with Soothing Wave, out of curiosity? Is the regen weak?
Is Earth bad? I picked Earth for aesthetic reasons. I’d like to keep an earth build, so feel free to let me know if I can change anything to accomodate that.
Will fix the sigils.
Would Dwayna Rune be okay?
I don’t know why it’s listed as a bad link, but if you copy paste it to the url should be fine.

Basically I’m going for a bunker or regen tank kind of build. I don’t care too much about damage, I just want to be really hard to kill because on my tourney team I usually am the bunker/team support guy.
You look like young Link to me (legend of zelda nintendo games), was joking that you need to find the temple to age about 7 years.
ahaha okay nice
I tried to make my guardian look very ‘normal’ and even androgynous, and he gets called cute a lot.
You wanted to make your guardian look androgynous and rolled a Silvary?
Seems legit.
Well, androgynous for a Sylvari. Androgynous isn’t really an accurate term, though. I suppose “non-combative” is more accurate. The RP concept for the character is that he’s intensely dedicated and focused on being a Guardian, but actually has a certain degree of innocence and distaste for combat that shows in his expressiveness and appearance.
So it’s not androgynous so much as him being meant to look young and “harmless”.
I picked Sylvari because they don’t have much muscle mass or bulk with their strength being more based on their wooden frame, so it’s easier to sell him carrying around a greatsword and being so slight.

You need to find the Temple of Time. :P
I don’t get it.

in SPvP my roll heals for around 770, it’s really nice
Huh? It doesn’t have torch skills. Something must have glitched. It’s supposed to be signets curing conditions.

This is my current prototype.
I’m talking about purely TPvP.
I’m trying to refine my Guardian’s playstyle some, into something durable, but not immobile. Essentially, I’d like to make him a build that is tanky while still maintaining an aggressive playstyle. I don’t really like “passive” tanks.
Anyone know of said builds?
Hmm guardians can be REALLY seflish in builds. But they aren’t supposed to be the highest dps power houses. But in truth I haven’t seen a single warrior whose a dps power house be able to sustain himself as well as a guardian doing it.
Do you know what kind of builds these are?
Curious what’s the go-to for that right now.
So I main an 80 Guardian on GW2, have since launch, and am not entirely happy with it.
Here’s my style: I like playing aggressive ‘duelist’ characters who are focused on dominating in 1v1. My playstyle is a sort of direct [hence why thieves don’t appeal to me], brawler-oriented class who is focused on slugging it out with one enemy at a time. My Guardian, no matter how offensively I build him, still seems to be more group-oriented than anything.
I’m fully aware that maybe I’m just not building my guardian right. Typically, I use a greatsword/sword-torch build.
Long story short, I’m trying to ask people who have played warriors, guardians, or both: which class am I better off with if I want a character who is very focused on winning 1v1 fights and assaulting points?

So I hit 80 fairly early into the game, then took a break recently for XCOM [which is great, btw]. I’m back now, and I want to start my long journey towards getting Sunrise.
Only problem is I have no idea how to gather the stuff needed. I know what I need, just not how to efficiently do it.
Anyone got efficient ways of making gold, karma, and skillpoints?
I’ve got to say, I don’t think I am, and here’s why.
Tome of Courage:
Tome of Courage is powerful, no doubt about it, but I also find it completely boring, and also not very useful for sPvP. My main problem with it is that the 5 skill, the full heal, is so powerful that it takes complete priority, and that skills 2-3 feel really weak by comparison. A nearly-spammable blind is nice, but with absolutely zero offense, it’s hard to keep any pressure on enemies.
In PvP, this problem is compounded; when I’m fighting in a large battle, sure, that heal can turn the tide, but the problem is, the whole time Tome of Courage is up, I become a very stereotype MMO healer, and I thought the whole point of this game was to do away with that kind of gameplay.
TLDR: I find Tome of Courage functional, but uninteresting, and the 2-3 skills feel underwhelming especially.
Renewed Focus: I…really can’t justify this elite skill at all. Maybe some Guardians are making it work for them, but the invulnerability is really just neutral, since you’re stuck in place while casting, and the only effect is to refresh virtue cooldowns? Even if I pop all three virtues at once, then use Renewed Focus, it pales in comparison to the kind of power the tomes bring to the table.
If someone is genuinely impressed by Renewed Focus and what it does for them, I guess that’s great, but I’d be surprised.
Tome of Wrath: I’m actually pretty happy with Tome of Wrath. The boons are powerful and it gives a great boost to damage. Of all the elite skills, it’s the only one I really find interesting.
So, there’s my two cents. I’d love to hear if it’s really just a matter of taste, or if other Guardians feel as pigeonholed by their elite skills as I do.
Also, oops, I use Save Yourselves, not hold the line.
I am specced into damage, mostly.
I mean, I know people say Zeal is the be-all end all for Guardian damage, but I disagree. I completely wreck every Zeal Guardian I meet, and I’m pretty sure the 20% greatsword cooldowns in the lower trees and the torch damage stuff is more meaningful.
Guardian just isn’t capable of high PvP spike. We’re a steady, consistent burn, which the spirit really hurts.
Yeah but the only problem is that he’s a ranger, so at range, he’s got a pretty big advantage. Then again, I can use wall of reflection and my scepter/torch to trade hits well.
Please note: Not a whine thread. Moreso a question thread, and a discussion one.
I play a Guardian. My best friend is a Ranger. I run a fairly offensive build, found here:

My Ranger friend runs this: http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#Mcom0zM0olTLoolTLo0axx0zmsbmRq
So far, we’re pretty unstoppable together. We train together a lot, and do really well in PvP. The only problem is, well.
I’m having a lot of trouble with his Nature spirit.
He and I have been playing games together and sparring for years. We always wind up pretty much even, eventually, if the game is at all tuned for 1v1. Our fights so far pretty much go that way as usual. But once that spirit comes out, man…
With his passive regen combined with that spirit, which has double health and follows him, he’s got about 700 a second of healing. For sixty seconds. I can’t whittle him down, despite my best efforts, and I can’t kill the spirit, either. It has a ton of health, heals quickly, and my friend does tons of damage if I let him pressure me.
So, I have to ask. Is the spirit tuned alright for 1v1? If so, what are my options? If not, should I just run until it’s gone, then come back? Because I can trade wins with him just fine otherwise, but man…that thing is wrecking me.
Please spay and neuter your Charr today.
This is a public service announcement funded by the Sylvari Firstborn.
I got rid of the blade! I will note that whenever I see/preview one now, the blade’s already out, however, so it may have just been an early glitch they ironed out.
i am not sure at all i just make kitten up
If only there were other weapons for you to use!
I really like the scepter. But I think the hammer and staff are incredibly boring. I know people who love them, though.
It’s playstyle, dude. Not every weapon will suit you, and that’s okay. But unless a lot of people hate the weapon [they don’t, the Scepter is crazy-popular], it’s a bit rude to want to change it.
I have this one.
http://www.guildhead.com/item/55108/sylvari-blade#.
When you put it away, the blade part disappears and only the vines are left.
Look at this greatsword model. It does the same thing.
http://gw2.unfair.co/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/warden_weapon_set_gw2.jpg
Yeah. I wish they’d say one way or another. As a roleplayer who wields a Sylvari weapon and takes realism of combat seriously, it’d be nice to know what kind of weight, consistency, and strength I can expect.
Okay, thanks. I guess I imagined it or something.
Ah. I’ve never seen the metal, wasn’t aware. Thanks for that!
I suppose I can’t rule out it might be enchanted metal, but it definitely doesn’t look it. It looks more like some kind of crystal to me, at least.
I don’t know about that. I don’t think the Sylvari use metal. All of the Sylvari-made gear looks to be exclusively crafted of plant materials and occasionally stone.
It’s because we’re incredibly tough and higher health would make us broken. In BWE1, we had about 20k health and were unstoppable.
Between all our self-buffs, our frequent aegis/blocking, and mobility/healing tools, our low health is how the game balances out all of our defenses.
This is a very good point!
Would you say it’s likely that the blades of these cultural weapons is some kind of magical amber-like substance, though? I’m not too obsessed with them being from the Pale Tree, I’m just trying to identify the texture and qualities of the substance itself.
Very true, Illushia. My main reason that I suspect the cultural weapons are from the Pale Tree is because they’re clearly very rare and expensive, as evidenced by their cost and how you almost never see Sylvari NPCs wielding them. Only the occasional high-level warden seems to sport one.
As for your first point: It’s a feasible assumption to make, seeing as they look exactly the same and are so rare even few Sylvari Wardens wield them.
Secondly, well, my blade disappears when sheathed, so I dunno which model you have.
And third: You mean like a katana? Or a rapier? Or a scimitar? I said ‘brittle’, not ‘glass’. All sharp swords are easily broken with a blunt blow to the flat of the blade; that’s the price of sharpness. They can still parry light attacks and deflect strikes, as long as one is prepared to dodge heavier blows. No one willingly takes a warhammer to the flat of their blade, and all sharp blades utilize movement-oriented combat styles precisely so they can avoid strikes that would damage their sword.
Come on, man, that’s basic swordsmanship.

I’m not complaining.
