[Druid] - no pet effects with staff?

Anyone else think this is a bit odd? Every other MH weapon has an ability that affects pets in some way except the staff. Maybe something like having pets apply a blind when using staff 3, or gaining a light aura on staff 5, or swiftness on staff 4 would work?

Nope. Don’t think so. I’ll hold out hope that one day common sense will break through to the Devs.

As far as OP goes:
Martial Mastery – Merged with Two-handed strength. Remains in Wilderness Survival.
Master trait: Damage with Greatswords, Swords and Spears is increased by 5% and Cooldown is decreased by 20%.

I like that one. Idea of putting 30 pts into BM for something that should be standard, though… Man. No.

well you’re in for a bad time, JP said recently that they are buffing pet abilities in an effort to make them more desirable to the ranger/group so I doubt they’re going away anytime soon. You might enjoy a longbow/rifle warrior more, rangers are a pet class

OP, these are great suggestions. A small change I’d like to see would be making the master BM traits not be restricted to certain species

Ranger Elites

We already have a spirit, survival and pet elite skill. I’d like to see the other skill families get some love. Maybe something like:

Smoke Trap
Dazed: 3s
Blind per second: 1s
Duration: 5s
Trap radius: 120
Effective radius: 180
Combo Field: Smoke
Range: 600 (with Trapper’s Expertise trait)
Cooldown: 180s

Smoke fields are cool in that they’d allow us to stealth by leap/blast finishing via our melee abilities (also some small synergy with remorselessness) or just further make life miserable for melee by blinding them with our many projectile finishers.

I’d also like to see healing spring classified as a trap so we can stop being the (to the best of my knowledge) only class without a traitable heal skill.

Signet of Ferocity:
Passive: You and your pet each gain Fury (5s) and Might (5s) every 10 seconds
Active: Your pet attacks and recharges its skills 25% faster while active. Causes knockdown on first successful hit(8s)
Cooldown: 180s

It’s hard to come up with a signet that doesn’t step on rampage as one’s toes.

“Stampede!”:
Command your second pet to join the frey and attack your target for 10s. Revives your active pet if it is downed. Your pets gain swiftness (10s) and fury (10s).
Cooldown 150s

An ability like this will probably make it into the game at some point. There should probably be a penalty if both of your pets die, but eh. Just an idea

When thinking about this kind of thing, you have to also consider the lore behind the class. I’d think that merging with your pet is too magic-oriented for rangers in guild wars

A bit harsh, but kinda true. We don’t yet know anything about it except for that they’ll allow it to apply revealed. Without knowing the full details of how the skill will change and then using it, we can’t honestly say whether or not it will be worth using.

We shouldn’t complain just to complain. We we want to help, then we should point out the exact reasons why something is lacking. Not just that it is lacking.

Yes exactly. There is never any circumstance to complain for the sake of complaining unless you’re a whiny kitten. We don’t know if they fixed the bug for the patch JP is referring to, or exactly how it functions. All we know is that we have additional support utility, and this kitten is knocking it before we know anything about it. It’s childish.

possible support build? (traps + shout, PvE)

in Ranger

Posted by: Doug.9628

Doug.9628

Basically I wanted to make a support build using the new shout trait and wanted something different from the berzerker playstyle. I’m not claiming this is the best build available. So I figured the best way to do it without sacrificing too much of my own dmg was to use traps so the party can take advantage of the combo fields.

link to build: http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=VG;4wEFy-u2JDF-0;9-8I;2T-T9;147A;121B2;0LRF5;2zxrUzxrUo-Fa0-e0E0;9;22o-G-2i;9;9;9;9;9;9;0V8k3q

This is using apothecary gear. I wish it was possible to get the +vigor on healing trait in WS (it applies vigor on every tick of regen from healing spring, haven’t tested to see it it also works with the shout trait yet) but the shout reduction trait letting you perma regen/swiftness the party was too good to pass up, also lets you fun sic em more feasibly for the times where guard won’t be as useful.

Leaked notes confirmed.

What’s with the shout grandmaster trait in nature magic…especially when shouts have so little utility (other than protect me). Sick ’em has so many conditions for it to even function, guard is pretty useless, and now search and rescue is the worst teammate res skill (it was always bad in pvp).

Honestly, I think builds will change a bit, but spirits were not buffed enough. Everyone will still be running BM, and BM will probably still be a great 1v1 build.

Guard isn’t useless. It gives your pet almost perma protection. One of the biggest complaints is that pets die too fast. It’s nice. Sick ‘em needs to be fixed, yes, but it is still a great ability. Protect me is decent now as a stun breaker, it’ll see some use for sure. Search and rescue.. I dunno, I love the concept of it but when I use it and my pet just stands there I sigh in real life. Maybe it combos with the altered WS rez trait?

The leaked notes mentioned faster activation times for spirits, I’d be interested to see if that makes them any better to use. As it is now their abilities are unreliable, but they got buffed to 0.5 seconds activation time and a larger radius this patch. Definitely worth testing out but I agree that on paper it’s questionable.

Regardless, some exciting stuff to look forward to this patch. Looking forward to dumping the signets and running something a little more interactive

This. Even if the patch notes are true, I’m more excited about the LB buffs than I am bothered about anything else.

Glad to see some level headedness. Lb buffs, enhanced party support, new mechanics on weapons. It’s everything we asked for; problem is it’s not “new BM GM trait – your pets are invincible and teleport around the map” or “new MM adept trait – longbow instantly kills everything in sight when you switch to it and rangers are the best class in the game now in case you were wondering” so people will complain that it’s not enough to make it easier to complain about the nerfs. I guess it takes more effort to yell the sky is falling than to look up and see for yourself that it isn’t

that’s cool, but is it as easy for your ele friend as it is for a ranger? It only requires 1 skill. In the NM traitline you can trait to give vigor on your heals (which renews everytime healing spring ticks). Bring a jungle stalker to give 3 stacks of might on it’s f2, bring a crimson moa/blue moa for fury/prot.

Bring the above with frost and either stone or storm spirit with axe, pull mobs on top of the spirits with axe 4 and bomb them. In 1 trait line you can provide perma swiftness/regen, almost perm vigor, 10% damage buff to your party (or is it 7, can’t remember), huge fury uptime with crimson moa/warhorn and good prot uptime with crimson moa/stone spirit. Rangers will actually be able to bring good party support after this patch.

Problem is, a lot of bad people will focus on the negatives of the patch which just shines more light on the whole “rangers suck” vibe that goes around the entire community, not just the ranger boards, instead of trying to prove people otherwise with the tools given them

OP is right and wrong at the same time.
I play a Ranger myself and yes, the damage output of some pets was too high just for speccing 30 in beastmastery and going full heal/tank with the rest.

BUT (and this is a tremendous but)
good players can easily avoid the pet damage and there is nothing you (=the ranger) can do about it , because there is no way to control out pets. Heck, even the command is more like a mild suggestion “Terrifying Howl you say? Uhm just let me finish my channel here and ill get back to you in a sec or two”.
Yeah, it might seem overpowered to stomp 3 braindead potatoes without actually paying attention but complaining about it is a bit like complaining about warrior 100b in pvp because it deals so much damage…

I have dueled some really experienced elementalists as well as thiefs as a BM and lost most fights simply because the pet did not hit them one single time with a seriously damaging attack. I won some with a tricky immobilize -> pet swap -> stealth -> hilt bash -> sick em combo which took my enemies by surprise (and of course is super easy to land vs. the above mentioned classes… ), but that was more like a one trick pony and does not work on someone who is expecting you to try this.
Besides that, an ele can kite your pet until tomorrow and thiefs…stealth renders all melee pets useless and s/d can blink/shadowstep all day making it even worse. Record in uselessness holds the raven for being locked in the f2 animation for 11sec because it could not hit the thief.

I would gladly take reduced pet damage in exchange for an advanced pet control or significantly improved ai, but this is just a stupid, mindless nerfbat that shows (again) that the developers dont give a rats kitten about the ranger and people have the right to raise their concerns about this.

The “buffs” on longbow are a joke because it still is a lackluster skillset with bad scaling. Axe 4 is OK i guess but we will see.
Spirits? Yay, one trait merged (in fact a good decision). Does not change the fact that spirits are squishy as hell and can be killed along the way. Even the elite spirit dies in a few seconds if your opponent is smart enough to focus it down first before dealing with you.

Ive long before given up on the idea of using my ranger in PvE/dungeons simply because my guardian is so much more useful in most scenarios, hands down. This nerf also hits the pve rangers, which is totally uncalled for. Whats with all that promises about making rangers more viable in dungeons by eliminating some fundamental flaws? Hey, now we will have a Grandmaster trait that allows us to apply regeneration and swiftness, the most useful boons in a dungeon run. I would totally pick that over Stand Your Ground, Hold The Line or Save Yourselves with Pure of Voice traited and maybe a soldier rune. Oh right, I wouldn’t.

And dont get me started on the short bow.

with that shout trait and 10 in BM rangers can give the party perm swiftness and regen only by using the guard shout, which gives your pets perma prot as well. That’s not insignificant. The LB buffs were not minor tweaks either. Did you see how the aftercast was changed? I’m not a math whiz but I think that makes it a 25% dmg increase. Spirits remain to be seen, sun spirit’s cast was buffed to actually be reliable and storm spirit got a big dmg upgrade, maybe spirit bomber builds will be viable who knows. Point is, reserve judgement until 1) the notes are actually released and 2) when you have a chance to thoroughly test them

This is so stupid. All of the shortbow’s DPS is on the autoattack. You could increase the damage of the other abilities by 40% and it would still be a DPS loss over just using the autoattack.

What love did the longbow receive besides projectile speed? You’ll still be dead as soon as someone gets close to you.

I can tell you’re a glass is half full kinda guy.

The SB 1 did not receive a dmg upgrade, it’s true. I missed the part where it says that the new traits; most of which are pretty great changes, will not affect the shortbow. Clearly, the patch that changes the range of the weapon offers no way to possibly compensate for it.

I haven’t played in a while but I take it your extensive playtesting of the patch are how you know “you’ll still be dead when someone gets close to you” while wielding a longbow. You will find the other changes it received when you stop foaming at the mouth and read all the other little numbers in the patch notes that are obviously complete and finalized.
