Level restricted potions for LS = Fail

Would like to know who thought making the Powerful Potions of Slaying Scarlet’s Armies restricted to level 80 was a good idea when many of the players participating, or trying to participate, have been scaled up to play the event and can therefore NOT utilize an item that they of all players need the most?

Please take that “feedback” into consideration for the next LS, thanks.

No reward for killing Scarlet?

I just finally completed(after killing all the knights for three hours and having it bug out until this last time), or at least I thought I had, the fight with Scarlet and her holograms with a group that got in and I got nothing at the end. I could live with that if it was the same for everyone but at least one of the people in the group that was in there at the same time got the achievement and Scarlet’s Veil Skin. I know they were there because they were in the same chat as everyone else that were giving direction on what to do next.

All I know is after killing the final big boss after the smaller ones appeared, we were told to get out before the cannon went off and everyone ran for the exit and I ended up back in LA…. with nothing, no achievement, no skin… nada(unless you count the 8890 exp I gained after hitting the Microsynergetic Hologram for 0 using Crossfire just before she went down and we got booted.)

No one is entitled to complete all of the achievements associated with an event. If you do not have the capacity to best the challenges and hard content associated with an event then the achievements associated with them should not be yours. That said i believe if there is a meta reward that is of sufficiently little importance it should require a minimal number of achievements to acquire, but i also believe there should be a rarer and more prestigious item given to those who have the skills to pay the bills.

If you were responding to my post, I would just like to point out that the Bazaar meta has nine achievements left to do, eight of which I will never be able to do as a solo ranger with no pvp skills so I never said I should be able to complete them all, but the ninth I did finish … guess what, it didn’t count. Your point again?

You don’t have the skills required of the content so you don’t get the reward, and the difficulty of the content doesn’t necessarily need to be changed to ensure any player is able to complete it. <- that’s my point

You missed MY point, I WAS able to do 16 achievements(just as the devs had promised when they said I could play this game my way… ie. no pvp), as listed in the section of achievements for this event, however, someone decided that one of the achievements listed would not count for the meta and now it’s my fault?

Until people speak with their wallets, ie do not support this kind of content with cash, this is what we will keep getting fed. The developer’s don’t have to make games that make us happy as long as we still pay them so until the divide gets so wide that “their” wallets start to hurt nothing will change.

This difficulty simply isn’t in line with… anything else in the game.

Yes we want difficult content in the game, but a little two week mini event that is harder than all top “end game” content? From the impossible task of getting gold, to people avoiding groups at all costs, it just feels broken, not difficult.

And again, people think differently and are on both sides of this, which is good! It makes for an interesting topic. That being said, I don’t see how a developer isn’t chiming in on this, or any posts on the topic. Not to make it easier or harder, just to join in on the conversation and give some insight / input as to what they are / were thinking and where they plan to go from here related to difficult content.

Agreed, however, my main issue apart from making the content not just difficult but next to impossible for someone like me who may have played for years but absolutely do not have pvp/twitch skills (I only play rangers, lol they’re usually the easiest class to play… ) so obviously am basically a newb to anything involving any form of pvp(that includes the Sprint event) to complete pretty much any of the meta achievements for any of their trumpeted “inclusive” events, unless they are part of the cliche that lives and breathes the pvp part of this game or are those that are talented at finding and using exploits before they are caught and patched, is that this EVENT is supposed to be for ALL players, old and new.

So to take a new player and level them up to 80 so they can take part is fine and dandy, but seriously, they then expect them to compete with players that have years of this game under their belt plus all the bells and whistles that that gives them, just to try and get the cool fluff from taking part and then pretty much telling them they don’t measure up so no fluff for you … umm what’s that English expression… oh yea, “bad form”.

I have no problem with making hard content for those who want it and even giving them special rewards, but isn’t that what the Fractals and Mists were all about? Those of us who don’t play that content will never ever get any of the cool stuff from those but when there’s a game wide event that is touted as all inclusive, I expect just that, to be able to participate in a meaningful way and NOT to get to 15/16 of the achievements and have to call it quits since I don’t have a clue or the talent to complete any of the rest. Oh and btw, putting in that new Sprint Achievement to run 15 more races… that was just mean… I did it thinking it would let me actually complete the Meta but guess what, it doesn’t count…. again, “BAD FORM”!

When I open my stocking on Christmas morning, I really don’t care if everyone else got the same as me, as long as I like what I got(love those dark chocolate marshmallow snowmen)…. I certainly don’t try to return anything for a profit.

Then again, I learned my lesson with buying random boxes for cash a few games ago, especially for something that I can’t even legally use images of outside of this medium without permission.

Anyway, as far as events go this was alright even though I absolutely detest the snowball mayhem and yes I tried to complete the achievements, enough to be killed about 100 times or so.:/

I don’t have a mesmer or a warrior so basically was an easy kill for the other team every single time, not to mention I have never pvp’d past a little bit in UO and could never get my mind past the whole killing thing, beasts for food etc or defending my life from toys on steriods and evil npcs alright, but other real live players, no thanks.

Certainly after trying this and still only getting 3/5 for stopping the other team and NO deliveries myself because none of the “teams” i were on were supporting anyone else trying to do it, I can’t see myself ever wanting to play again though I’d love to finish all the Wintersday achievements, those are the last two I need.

My last word on the Snowball Mayhem, why in the world are we forced onto teams when the achievements are not? It’s bad enough to have to fight the other teams to get the gifts but your own team members, that’s just bad form imo.

Gift stopper griefers

Thanks for the pm but as a strictly pve gamer, I hate the idea of killing other players when we’re supposedly all trying to save the same world, anyway, I could see having to deliver it once or stop it once but five times?

Imo, that just makes people that hate pvp hate it even more, especially when combined with players that typically race to endgame just to pvp because they hate pve/adventuring/exploration and know all the, I’ll call them, “strategies” for winning in such types of situations.

I agree, my team won at least 8 times last night, unfortunately that was when I first started and was playing support so didn’t get any of those counts for the achievement because I didn’t realize you had to BE the person carrying the gift(what was the point of making teams if winning as one doesn’t count for anything?), but also not once was I able to complete a single gift stopper either because they kept dropping the gifts… so much for this “great community” helping each other get their holiday achievements…

Only thing I got done was my monthly kills which I admit I would never have done otherwise, but then I don’t pvp at all so that didn’t matter anyway since I will never ever get the other monthlies done.

@ Morvani, thanks for standing up for us caregivers! I agree with you, pretty much 24/7 caregiving and the subsequent isolation from providing it do make playing mmos very attractive even if we cannot participate in the typical tied at the hip guild/group play.

Caregiving is also one of the reasons I don’t like getting into all the chatplay some play these games for, caregiving is absolutely one of the most emotionally draining activities a person can engage in. Caregiving is like housework, it’s never done and you only have fleeting moments of feeling like you’ve accomplished anything….

Therefore, when I log in all I want to do is relax, release some tension by bashing a few baddies and try to contribute to making this changing environment/world/shard/server a little nicer by assisting others when I can and then collect stuff/loot to make stuff to make my character better(stats/looks) to help give me a sense of having actually done something that day. I really prefer games that let me have fun doing all of that, frustration is something I really don’t need more of.

Another game with non-instanced housing that is still around is Entropia. You can see the housing and you can go into a lot of them (the owner sets permissions) and wander around.

However, that game is something like a very pretty virtual casino for people who are richer than me. It’s still fun to wander around in, though, and wandering is free.

UO is non instanced/open world. Imo the only thing their housing system falls down on is that they let neon tiles in when they let us start designing our own houses.

  1. quick bug fixes
  2. great balance in pve (notably no bugs/nerfs preventing a primarily dps class from soloing)
  3. easily farmed crafting loot
  4. easy ways to make decent money
  5. in game drops of keys for chests/special items usually found in stores.
  6. relevant crafting
    — which all leads to having fun because when you don’t have to think about those things or spend time wondering “what in blazes the devs were thinking when they did that” or wondering how you are going to afford things you need (not want need like runes for your armor to complete it or even the exotic armor itself) then you can spend the rest of the time having fun with your friends without harming their progress in things like dungeons etc.

The above pretty much says it for me, or in short form, a game where it feels like my character matters in the world.

ie. other players and npcs both value my crafted goods, being able to make equipment for myself and not just for lower levels because the mats I need are all only obtainable from high level areas where you need a zerg for a chance to get them. I really like the systems where you can feasibly get most of the mats yourself, for yourself, and have a reasonable chance at crits for the cooler/better stuff.

Hobbies or whatever you want to call them is also another keeper for me, it makes the game more of an alternate reality instead of “just” a game. I love fishing both for rare loot like the treasure maps in UO and the chests in WoW as well as providing reasonable mats for other crafts like cooking and even some types of equipment(scales, bones, pearls, etc).

I think if a game has avenues other than just the typical pve/pvp/guilds/raids/zergs to provide a viable way of being a part of the community like fishing, farming(growing crops), raising livestock(sheep for wool, chickens/ducks/etc for eggs, feathers, maybe even mounts and pets) as well as open world housing even if you only had a limited choice of preset foundations/storage (with some room for personalization, paint, diff roofs, etc) and even boats for deeper sea fishing(which could be expanded eventually to include some form of warfare for those who live to kill, ie. fighting pirates or other “evil factions” where you could form parties to take over and control islands for the “good factions” that would have exotic mats for expanded armour and weapon skins(in other words NOT necessary but something alot of players love if only for the expanded income it would provide), then I would probably never leave. I’d definitely be willing to pay a sub for it!

Oh yea, and I’d want to have a wardrobe/costume setup similiar to LoTRO where you can choose from a number of selected outfits on what your character shows to the rest of the world.

Since this thread “Level descaling in my opinion” won’t open at all for me my reply to it fits just as well in this one. This game was so much more fun when I could actually loot off almost every kill and from that loot find something useful whether it was equipment, salvageable mats, mats or dyes(there are something over 400 of them to discover…). Now it’s nothing but grind and by the time I’m done my daily I really don’t want to go try and fight on level stuff because the loot barely covers my repair and travel costs as it is. Yea yea, some level 80’s or so say it’s easy to make gold, just run fotm…. no thanks, if I wanted to play a dungeon crawler I’d already be doing that.
Anyway, in reply to:

Mirta.5029:

It’s an economy balance. If there was no descaling level 80s could run in, 1 hit kill everything and flood the market with crap and mid gear making it really cheep and making lower levels unable to make money.
——————————————————-
In theory, perhaps, but in reality the loot nerfs and diminishing returns prevent low levels from making any money now unless they’re really lucky and actually get the odd unid dye that they would rather sell than gamble on for their own character/s. The only way I was able to get enough to buy my level 40 training books was by selling all my ore and cloth instead of leveling up my crafting so now I’m really behind the ball with trying to make myself equipment.

Imo, there needs to be a rollback of the DR now that the bots are supposedly mostly gone, maybe then players would return to the world maps.

Well some of us still having the stuff left over from doing the phases, ie the map fragments and soggy bag that Head Researcher Levvi didn’t take from my pack. As to how to prove we were actually at Lost Shores but didn’t complete the event for whatever reason, the only way I guess they could do that is to check and see if we have the waypoints but not the reward bag. Since this turned out to be repeatable for every character if they managed to get on an overflow that hadn’t yet finished it, it would only be fair to those who didn’t exploit that by checking each character to see how far each character had gotten in the phases, those were supposed to be how you qualified to even be able to do the final event, correct?

That doesn’t make sense cause all the events were bug and for most of us oceanic players they were fix while we were sleeping and ohh yeah the next phase was in place before you woke up so was pretty hard to complete. Oh and since the timing was so great of the final nearly all oceanic players missed out. So what ever they do it won’t be fair, that I can see coming from a mile away.

That was kinda my point, if Anet can check to see who tried to participate but couldn’t and does so, instead of trying to shuffle everyone off with some excuse as to why they won’t, should then give some kind of compensation to those who tried. Whether that just be the achievements for the event or the 20 slot bag or a loot bag with the same chance at the goodies from the huge chest at the end or all of the above, that would be up to Anet to decide which would garner more goodwill.

Ultima Online: Reinassance Patch: Introduction of Trammel.
It pretty much created PvP/PvE servers. Use to be one server type containing all varieties of life. That melting pot made the perfect community which got split and made the community divided and other mmorpgs took notes and split server types. Pretty much ended what I’d consider a “true sandbox.”

Perhaps, but otoh, Trammel saw a dramatic increase in subs. What pretty much killed the game for me was AoS, though I hung on for few years hoping they’d see the error in making crafting pretty much obsolete(a local, vibrant and viable crafting/manufacturing community fuels the economy, a lesson some of our politicians could learn) not to mention tone down some of their neon tiles. :/

For anyone feeling nostalgic, this blog sure refreshed some memories for me:

Elarii.2756

you were right on the mark until you reached the end.

<snip>
Right before they added ascended gear they performed a series of stealth nerfs and some announced ones.

They added DR claimed it was due to bots, they broke magic find, they reduced drops to almost 0% chance from open world mobs, they prevented magic find from affecting chest drops, and they claimed they’ve increased the drop rates from champions and veterans but so far all I’ve received is the same crap that i’d receive from any other normal mob making fighting those things useless unless karma as a reward is involved. <snip>

So basically that leaves us with a single play style to progress in the game. dungeons.

The drop rates in dungeons are the only way to actually receive rewards for your time.

<snip>
This is supposed to be a game filled with choices and for the most part it is until the end game. It’s so confusing what they have done to progression and to any other spec other then burst damage specs because the end game has even fewer choices now then ever.

This is what’s killing the game for me, my highest character is still only 50ish with the rest close behind so I don’t feel qualified to comment on the new ascended gear yet, but since the DR really kicked in(and where’d all the dyes go, I haven’t seen more than a few across four characters in weeks now) and the simple fact that I despise dungeons of all kinds to the point that you could put another Ancient Karka reward in one and I still wouldn’t go, adds up to me barely logging in anymore.

It’s a shame really because imo LoTRO has turned into nothing but a money grab with their ftp concept that actually deters their longtime vips from subscribing and WoW with it’s now third major overhaul of specs etc that just has me burned out from trying to respec, let alone find all the new armour and weapons needed as a result of it, for over 60 toons again and I had thought that I had finally found a new home in GW2.

As usual I’ll hang on for at least a few months and hope for the best… but I won’t hold my breath, beancounters don’t care if a few fans turn blue and/or pass out but hopefully they will notice my absence from the cash shop.

What if WoW never existed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Elarii.2756

Hrmm, if WoW didn’t exist I’d probably still be playing UO…

That’s assuming they hadn’t still felt the need to try and compete with other games by going with that gawd awful disjointed 3D and neon colours(those two things really ruined the whole feel of the game for me to the point that I just didn’t enjoy being in the world anymore).

I figured instead of staying with a game that I had loved for it’s sandbox simplicity that was really only limited by the players’ imagination and an almost believeable fantasy environment that had been visually ruined for me anyway, I may as well give the game it had been trying to emulate a try, cartoon characters and all it was getting rave reviews.

Too bad for UO the ease of gameplay I found with it’s intuitive controls spoiled me and when I did finally try to go back for a visit, I honestly missed my old virtual home so much, I couldn’t even make my way through to the first gate without feeling the strain in my forearm and even WoW with it’s “toons” was easier on the eyes than all those neon tiles spread throughout the world.

I have to admit that this game is just a filler for me until ArcheAge gets here, hopefully it too won’t be a big disappointment. That’s not to say that I’m not still having fun here, just that as the game development heads more and more into endgame tiered content instead keeping the lower levels fresh for both new arrivals and those who don’t like the typical endgame content(pvp/raids/dungeons, dungeons, dungeons) I’m starting to look elsewhere for my future entertainment dollars.

Dont’ feel bad; some of us participated in the event and got kicked out of the overflow due to ArenaNet having buggy code, and got nothing. Not a bag; not a trinket. Not even a few yellow items to pay for having all of our armor destroyed.

And now we’ve received absolutely no update since Sunday on what they’re doing to make this right.

If they can’t even communicate about the folks who got nothing at all, do you really think they’re going to consider the folks who got something, but just not as much as others?

If you consider that ArenaNet’s primary source of revenue of you from GW2 at this point is selling you Gems, then the act of giving out as many precursors as possible makes a lot of sense — it makes a lot of folks want to buy Gems to buy the mats to complete their legendaries. It’s a government stimulus program.

I personally won’t put a dime into this game or encourage anyone to play it until I see a sign that ArenaNet is making good on their promise to right the wrong of Sunday’s debacle. Having read nothing in the announcements since then suggests they aren’t going to be able to make this right, and want to put some distance between the event and when they announce some sort of minor compensation for their buggy code ruining the event for a significant portion of the player base.

The only communication I’ve seen so far about the “one time only event” is that apparently those who imo exploited it for multiple chances at the chests were the smart ones(see the final reply to the thread linked below).

Apparently those who like me who saw the ability to run and park multiple alts at the chest location mid event on overflow servers that hadn’t yet completed the “one time only event” and then spammed for invites to it or kept relogging, for what it was and did not, weren’t.

So far the problems I’ve noticed with my Norn is that she has more trouble navigating jumping puzzles(she can’t seem to fit on ledges and misses the exact same jump distances that my asura, sylvari and human characters can and yes they’re all the same class and pretty much the same stats) and she seems to move slower, both in just running through the maps and swinging her melee weapons. So as much as I love her appearance she’s definitely falling behind in levels as she’s just not as much fun for me to play.

I think some perspective is needed…

those that participated in the event did NOT KNOW what, if anything, we would get…. so imo it was a lapse in judgement on the dev’s part to use the rng and with such rare items but I’m pretty sure was done in goodwill to reward those who participated in their second big event(to help justify all the repair bills if nothing else) and to show off the game to the weekend guests.

Now those that figured out how to get more than the one reward per account, I’ll leave that up to the devs as to whether that was an exploit or not.

Umm ok, tho with 12 slot bags down to less than 20 silver there’s no way I’d ever spend that kind of currency on a single bag and I would hope that by the time I hit 80 I will be able to either make or loot a comparable accessory. My point is mostly that the bag was either account or soulbound so you couldn’t sell it anyway so the only ones getting rich were the few lucky people that got multiple precursors or whatever you call them or the special items that you try to get with them. I do totally disagree with the rng being used but the milk has been spilled, I just hope they don’t do it again.

I just wish people would stop with saying everyone who was able to loot the chest got minimum 30 gold worth of stuff or more… I sure didn’t. I got the 20 slot bag, the accessory that will wait another 35 levels for me to be able to use it, and a couple of yellow items that aren’t even as good as the masterwork armour I already use….

Some great pics, though if I hadn’t been fighting to stay alive, or getting rez’d, for much of it I would have liked a few of the journey getting to the end…

Maps and Zones

I would like to suggest an addition to the maps, labeled gates/portals to the next zone.

ie. Caledon Forest/Kraitbane Haven to Kessex Hills /Ireko Tradecamp, Caledon Forest/Town of Cathal to Metrica Province/Hexane Regrade OR even just Caledon/Kessex, instead of nothing.

Where are all the Black Lion Keys?

It would be really nice if there were random unlocked BLC’s, to offset the fact that out of five characters all leveled to at least 30 since launch, I have only ever looted one single key and if I remember correctly it was at the start of the Halloween event. None from personal story lines or anywhere else and I certainly can’t afford to buy more than a hundred keys to unlock all the chests that have dropped in the same time.

I love the views too, however I still have to figure out how to take a great wallpaper type pic without my character ruining it.

To be honest I’m scared of ranger/hunter/tamer type “fixes”, I’ve actually quit two games recently because of them. Just please please please don’t totally revamp the class and if you do need to nerf/change things do it slowly so it hurts less.

I’m curious as to whether all these vocal players that seem to think keeping this jumping puzzle tied to a holiday achievement would still redo it over and over and over again, just for fun, if there was no reward after the first completion?

Whenever I am asked about the quality of this Halloween event, the FIRST thing that comes to mind is the horrid clock tower. It completely overshadows the other aspects of the event, which were actually fun.

So from now on, when I see an announcement for a new “fun” holiday event, my first thought will be “oh crap, I hope there isn’t another clock tower fiasco like that Halloween event”.

I’m sorry you feel that way. If you hate sports and you go to the mall, is the first thing on your mind the horrid sports store? When people ask you about the mall, instead of mentioning the delicious pretzels, do you instead think of the sports store?

If they build a new mall down the road do you say to your friends “God, I hope they don’t put in another sports store. I just can’t have fun in a mall with all the different stores if they have a sports store there.”

Stop thinking like that, please. You had many other fun things to do for halloween, and just because you didn’t like one of the events doesn’t mean everyone hated them. The more negative comments like this, the more likely it is that I get to see less of the things I enjoy.

I didn’t like reapers rumble. I hated it honestly. But I’m not complaining about it. I know other people enjoyed it, and although I thought it was crap, there were plenty of other things to keep me entertained. I had a blast with the survivor mini game, and the clocktower. So please, be grateful for what you got. It’s not every day that you come across an MMO willing to dedicate so much to just a holiday event, and I don’t want to see each one met with nothing but negativity. I really enjoyed the clocktower, but I wouldn’t even say it overshadowed the other events. I see them all as a whole, and as a whole it was an amazing month. I had a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

I don’t think you can compare the clock tower to reapers rumble simply because all you needed to do to get the achievement count for reapers rumble was enter it and then leave, whereas the clock tower you have to complete it which obviously many players have been unable to do(either through technical glitches or physical limitations) and therefore are unable to complete the Halloween holiday achievements, something that should be fun to accomplish for everyone.

Even finishing the book quest was doable by lower levels because they could be carried by other players into the insane areas that anyone under level 60 had no way to survive, so why tie this one event to a holiday achievement that unless you have excellent hand eye control plus a good isp most would find next to impossible and not grant it like they did for reapers rumble?

Will there be an end event for halloween or will it just end.

IMO, if they do leave the clock tower up it should ONLY be available to those who haven’t completed it yet and once they have they’re done as well.
