I’ll run SA every so often when roaming just due to the kitten high chance I’m going to get extras in the fight or zerged down. Really though it shouldn’t have to carry you through fights. Dodging the actual attacks instead of randomly dodging after you eat one is kind of important.
Also, the intro. Why. Why?
Here is the thing. Despite how it may seem only warrior, ele, and engineer can achieve permanent swiftness without gearing a very particular way and even then they do have to invest a little in boon duration. Ranger can keep it up with bird pets and warhorn but it requires a target. Thief can but you have to kill mobs randomly and set up for it. In any case not every class gets permanent swiftness. All classes have access to travelers rune and runes of speed.
Achieving permanent swiftness is not the same as strong mobility ooc. If you really want to just get around the map more quickly you are stuck in the guardian boat. Either invest in runes like air and cast mirror and temporal curtain to achieve permanent swiftness. Or simply buy travelers rune and be a little slower but requires no weapon specific options or utilities.
the reason temporal curtain doesn’t stack is that given the unlimited use ie as many players that walk through it while its active get swiftness it would make it possible to perma speed buff a zerg with little to no effort (though this happens already). It is an issue if balance and not a major issue at that if they buffed I doubt there would be complaints at the same time there isn’t much of an issue here given the other runspeed options.
Mesmers don’t have ANYTHING but temporal curtain, is the problem. Most other classes, if not all, have access to a move speed signet, trait, or amazing access to swiftness. Mesmers ONLY get temporal curtain, and that’s it.
Armor is useless VS conditions, so is HP, thats why I was running Lyssa Runes and Bask Venom. But, the meta isnt built around conditions, sorry. And speaking from a standpoint of simple numbers, Soldiers+Berserkers will always offer more EHP and DPS compared to Valkyrie and Berserkers when built to similar levels of EHP, it has nothing to do with traits or weapon sets, thats just how it is based on the numbers.
And stats do differ for different weapons, if you run full zerk with S/D you’d get pwned while it is okay for D/P. The mere fact that you don’t run S/D anymore says to me that stat combo you run is no good for it.
Not at all. All of (or most of) my S/D builds are in zerker’s gear. S/D is a very controlling set, with evades, teleports and decent stealth, so long as you can land CnD. Maybe I’m just bad with D/P or something, but to me, S/D is A LOT easier to run glassy. At least with S/D, if you play smart and leave shadow return up, you can quickly get out if you get caught. With D/P, if you get immobilized or accidentally revealed when you’re trying to stealth and running glass, it’s basically the end.
Stealth is not the problem here. Stealth is fine, only problem is the fact you can spam it using D/P. You won’t see people crying over D/D, that’s because for D/D you need a target.
Beside, this is the only kittening game that doesn’t have a skill that are able to detect stealth, it is just bullkitten. Anet need to make a stealth detector skill, preferably for rangers.

And all the frontal tracking channeled skills. Oh, I also forgot all the ones that track without having to acquire the target before they go into stealth. Plus the fact that thieves are still 100% vulnerable while in stealth…
I think Backstab needs a change. I know you wont like to hear it but it’s to much damage in a short period of time.
And one of the main reasons for my suggestions regarding Backstab and Heartseeker is to make it more interesting to use them. And i think building something up to increase the heartseeker damage is more interesting then just starting to spam it when the target is low.
Backstab is the highest burst a thief can have. It still does less than eviscerate or killshot, neither of which require perfect positioning to deal full damage to the target. Not to mention final thrust, which pulls off ridiculous hits on anyone below 50% health, and that isn’t even a burst ability.
Nerfing a weapon more than it already has been because it does “too much damage” when it still does less than several other abilities isn’t a good change.

I think this thread is slowly making headway towards being productive. I’m genuinely impressed with the haunts of this sub-forum.
The core “meat and taters” of the Thief class is stealing, it’s what it can do that no one else can. The initiative system however is the most significant difference between it and every other class as far as bare bones mechanics are concerned. Notably, steal is, IMO, extremely underpowered while the initiative system is a simply superior mechanic to weapon skill cool downs. Now maybe if every class could put in an equal trait investment to allow a reduction of cool downs on any weapon they use in the same way a thief can regain initiative to the point that it’s near unlimited skill use, then it’d be on par. As it stands though, I like this mechanic but it suffers from a design flaw: skill cost to skill value inequity.
I agree with you here completely. However ANet would rather flat out nerf the damage or usefulness of skills rather than change the ini cost when something seems to be a little too accessible or spammable.

You use the phrase “On demand” the way most people I’ve ever interacted with would use “available”. IMO, “On Demand” conjures the image of “This ability is always immediately available to me”
You don’t have Daze or Blind “On Demand” – you have it available. You can CnD, then fulfill the positional requirements.
You don’t have evade “On Demand” – you potentially have it available. If you’ve used FS to evade something, you’ve got 5 seconds/.5s LS casting time +2 init before you can use FS to evade again. Same goes for LS boon steal – It’s available, but not on demand
This goes for nearly every situation in which you described an ability as “On Demand” – You meant potentially available, which is correct.
100% this. I can’t run into a fight and mash 3 and take no damage. The blind/daze are completely situational, require you to be in stealth, either meaning CnD has to be used or a stealth utility needs to be blown. It also requires you to be positioned correctly to use it on your target. After that, either one of those is essentially on a cooldown because of revealed/initiative.

Try placing the blame where it should fall, on the individual players that attacked the parade (despite doing wvw in a wvw zone). Calling out a server because of a few players makes you seem like a scorned child.

You can say the actions of individuals all you like, but JQ WvW’ers were informed of the event in map chat and TS. And those who did not wish to partake either stayed away from the event or gone to a separate BL instead of headhunting yaks like BG.
The whole defensive attitude about playing a PvP game as intended just throws GvG out of the window. Would you go to a GvG and attack the guilds as they are fighting? A more happen on a BL than just WvW. TC hosting a yak parade was an organized community event. The attack wasn’t people going out to play WvW and stumbled upon a group of red players. The ones responsible already admitted that they purposely attacked harmless tonic transformed players knowing it’s part of an event.
There’s nothing wrong with saying to put the blame on the individuals and not the server. It isn’t like they were instructed to interrupt the parade. There was no server wide plan to do this.
Also, once again, it’s a PvP zone. People will attack who they want. Personally? I won’t interrupt a GvG or the parade, but not everyone shares the same mindset and they will. There is nothing to stop them as there are no actual rules in the game to prevent things like this. Do I think zerging down a GvG or the parade is cool? No, I don’t. However, when you’re in a borderlands, that’s your risk to take. Being frustrated about it is fine, but expecting everybody to share the same mindset is a very stupid expectation. It’s like playing DayZ and expecting everyone to avoid banditry.

On top of this, it’s also a PvP zone. You can try and organize things like this, where players are supposed to be friendly, but that’s at your own risk. People are going to do what they want, and attack who they want to attack. There was also nothing stopping you from retaliating, I’m sure there were enough people there to assist with that.
If you do this and expect everyone that runs into you to support what you’re doing and not attack, there’s another issue here.

Why do we have to Crowd Control someone to deal damage where every other class does not?
Obviously Skull Crack is powerful, but its ST. Most of the complaints of it come from Asura which have a different animation then all the other races. Where if I use it on my Sylvari for example, its very easy to see because it has a unique animation.
If I use it on an Asura, it looks exactly like an auto-attack swing.
1: I disagree with the whole “We have to CC to deal damage”, that is simply a false statement. Only reason that was ever brought up was because of the mass use of GS and the need of a CC to land 100b.
2: Asuras are a complete different issue. While I’ll agree that it is easy to dodge Skullcrack if you know what you’re looking for. That is highly based on player skill/knowledge. In the case of two high skilled players facing off the Warrior should be counting dodges/cooldowns.
So because some people know how to avoid it and others means it’s OP because of the ones that don’t? Balancing the game based on more casual players being unable to do things (hell, maybe not even a casual player. Maybe one new to fighting this build for whatever reason, etc…) is stupid and makes things boring.
Simplified – Learn what you’re fighting and just avoid it. Not everything is overpowered because it beats you. This build is meant for good CC/damage and it accomplishes that. It’s far from overpowered, just takes proper use of stability/breaks and dodges.
Also, there will always be builds that are easier than others. It’s a given. An example of this in the current meta would be condi builds, specifically necro. Apply face to keyboard, enemy bleeds out.
The average mace-shield/GS build is good at countering conditions, and there are builds good at countering the average as well. It’s the way it is.

There’s a point to it being SoRBL, y’know. Picking that map means that BG and JQ spawns are on the south side and the GvG spot is right between them. It was also late on a thursday night where the match was already decided, so why do you care so much about the PPT?
Yeah. We get a lot of comments saying “RIOT just runs” etc related to this, but normally we’re running as a group of 5-6, with a max of 10. This means that we’re going to run from 25 people, because the classiest players would dance on our body after zerging us down. If it’s an even fight? Hell yes, we’re going to stay. A lot of nights involve us running around just begging for a half decent fight.

Wut? ANet already stated that sPvP balance will be split from WvW/PvE balance. They also had no problem having PvP variants of skills in GW1 so I don’t see why they can’t/won’t do the same here.
They did state that, yes. They also don’t do it, or at least not for the skills that should actually be split.
I don’t see why they aren’t, as most of their patches include balance changes, but they’re not splitting things.

Stealth is already bad enough as it is, with channeled abilities tracking stealthed players. There’s also the fact that there is a few pulls that can be used after the player goes into stealth and will still track. If you want to make changes to it, make CC not track players unless they’re not in stealth.
Its funny how everyone is bringing up Thief and mesmers as viable counters. And you STILL need a particular weapon set for it.
What if im a D/D or D/P thief, should I roll over and ide? What if I roll with GS/S/F mes. Same argument. And if I play ele and ranger??
D/D – Basi venom, CnD, backstab. CnD again for stealth, dancing dagger to cripple.
D/P – Stand in blind field, spam headshot to daze.
Mes is not an argument. If you’re getting caught with a mesmer then it’s for SURE a L2P issue. Elementalists can out heal literally everything with a decent build, and rangers can kite forever along with days of stability.
Here. Three S/D thief builds that are good all around and can out damage the regen. The first is heavy burst, second is a balance, using shadow’s rejuvenation, and the third… if you can’t dodge every stun with the third then I don’t know what to say.

thieves always will have one of the lowest health pools in the game, have no invulnerability/blocking nonsense, have medium armor, and are generally forced to spec for high damage lest you do far too little.warriors literally have god mode with endure pain, a 3.75 stun on a 7 sec cooldown (the thief elite skill basilisk venom only stuns for 1.5 seconds and is on a 45 sec cooldown)
face it, warriors need to be nerfed badly. thieves can be countered easily. there is no counter for this bullkitten.

Or any of the other counters listed for that matter. Basically this whole thread is “GIVE ME A COUNTER TO THIS BUILD EXCEPT THE COUNTERS THAT YOU GAVE ME BECAUSE THOSE DONT COUNT”.
Shortbow 3. Sword/Dagger 3. Dagger/Dagger 3. Using Infiltrator’s Strike and it’s return on sword to juke. Shadow step. I could go on, it’s quite easy. Please though, before you post next time, make sure you know all of the weapon abilities, because it’s stupid easy to evade while playing a thief.
I can probably make a laaarge list of how to counter this build on thief, and I’m sure anyone who has the slightest idea of how to play their class can do the same.
This build is far from overpowered. It is however, annoying. To make a comparison so you know what I’m talking about, look at a D/P thief. If you know how it plays and know how to counter it, it won’t accomplish a kitten thing, aside from being annoying. It’s the exact same with this warrior build. You see a GS – Mace/Shield warrior, and you should know exactly what that player’s goal is and exactly what they’re going to attempt to do to you.
The build is no more than a nuisance. I think you want it nerfed because it bothers you, and you’re too lazy to learn how to fight against it, but overpowered? No. No no no nope.
Also, don’t pull some crap out of a hat about me “using this overpowered build so I want to defend it”. I haven’t touched my warrior for anything PvP related in a long time.

Got a couple more:
- AoEs can hit through evasion quite often (die mid roll, get the “evaded” popup)
- Picking up an orb sometimes gets you stuck in the pick-up animation, resulting in you not being able to move.
- Visions sometimes spawn and explode before they become visible to the player meaning you can’t react to them.
- Floor falls out immediately upon entering the arena.
- Seems that something weird can happen with the Windcaller fight, causing invisible tornadoes to hit people who are not facing her, causing stun lock.
- Picking up an orb while fighting Liadri sometimes results in the animation getting stuck in a loop, making it impossible to move.
- Liadri’s AoE hits through evade quite often (Evade/invulnerable pop up, die regardless)
- Liadri’s visions sometimes spawn and immediately explode before they become visible to the player, meaning they are impossible to react to.
- If the previous contestant fails to kill Subject 7, it will remain in the dome, along with all of the oozes that spawn off him.
- Can sometimes get caught in queue, unable to enter the arena. The yellow message appears and the announcer spams their dialog, however nothing happens. You are unable to clear active challenges with the fight master, so relogging is necessary.
- If you die while your screen is blurred, the screen stays blurred after the fight. Relogging necessary.
- Liadri’s visions can run through the whirlpool and kill you although they will still turn into an orb.

I’m starting to think you’re just getting hit by the skull cracks because you’re standing still. There’s no possible way you can take three breaks and have to go through all of them before any come off cooldown, unless you completely take your hands off your movement keys in a fight and wonder why you’re getting hit with every stun. Either that, or you pop a break in between each CC ability and not actually when you need to (when they swap to GS).
Bullkitten, Defektive and you know it. How does a thief go against it? Short bow? have you tried kiting a war with 400+ health per sec regen with shortbow?
Come on, be more objective please. If you say kite or avoid killing the war, you just lost the arguement right there. And i love how you saying “GS is easy to counter” when in fact the skull crack is the real problem. No kitten GS is easy enough to counter, but a 4sec stun every 7.6 sec is a little bit harder to deal with.
Easily. Take Shadow Step on your bar or use a sword and leave infil strike’s return up. The return on the sword won’t break the stun anymore, but you can still use it to move yourself out of the HB. The shadow step will break the stun on both the intial port and the return. If you find yourself actually sitting in the HB often… then I don’t know what to say.
I’m sure dedicated roamers and small group players on each server can agree that our playtime gets pretty boring when we’re reduced to ganking PvE heroes that get cut off from their zergs. /endrant
Iiiii dunno. Nothing like ganking a helpless PvE hero when they get too far away from the zerg. The best is when they try to run back to the main group like it’s going to make a difference. Poor guys.
We should be able to use whatever build we want.
You can use whatever you want when you are alone, but in a party there are four other people you should think of. People ought to respect their fellow team members and don’t force them to carry anyone in masterwork or sentinel/cleric/shaman/rabid/carrion mix of gear. Same goes with selfish magic find leeching, it helps you, but kicks the other four people in their faces.
Because my gear is none of your frigging business.
If you join my party, it is my business, because I will have to make up for your bad gear.
That’s also assuming the people in berserker’s (I know that’s what you want, because that’s what every group wants) actually knows how to use it properly. A lot of people can’t play when they’re that squishy, and it’s blatantly obvious when they’re dead every fight.

Lol I’m sorry but I have to say this. As an ex-Darkhaven player (I came to FA because it was my original server from launch, but went to Darkhaven for a few months because my friend wanted me to play on that server) I cant wait to face two specific Blackgate guilds.
[iCoa] Let me tell you their history.Darkhaven was beating NSP. One of the biggest guilds on NSP bandwagons over to Darkhaven, then they merge with other guilds on Darkhaven to make [iCoa] they mass recruit on Darkhaven and then a loss or two, and they bandwagon to Blackgate after recruiting a large amount of the WvW population from Darkhaven. I have no respect for this guild as it is one of the reasons Darkhaven is dead.
[GoF] Yet another ex-Darkhaven guild. They are unorganized zergs of 40+ that went from Darkhaven to CD. They were on CD a few weeks, and bandwagoned to Blackgate after CD lost ONE time. No specific hate for this guild as they seem like a good community, but server hopping to CD and then hopping off to a tier 1 server after 1 loss on CD is a bit…..lame.
These are the only 2 major guilds of Blackgate I know. No disrespect to Blackgate itself, obviously you guys have original guilds and such, but there cant be too much server pride existent, seeing as many of the guilds there came from other servers.
Uh, sir, I have a problem. GoF came to CD and was one of the last to leave, it wasn’t “1 loss” that caused it, there was a lot of drama and a domino effect of guilds leaving. I also don’t think that if they wanted to bandwagon, that they would come to Blackgate. If they wanted to bandwagon for free wins, JQ would have been a better choice.
EDIT: Also, the VERY FIRST week on CD for them was a loss, and I believe we lost a few times after that too. So…

I’m very impressed with Blackgate. They continuously come out tops when the numbers are even(reset) All they need now are some half decent guilds to transfer over to them for coverage to energize t1.
Three guilds just transferred from Crystal Desert. LW (mine), LaZy, and GoF. That should increase the coverage we have on BG nicely (I hope).
Also, EBG had some great fights tonight, lets keep this up all week, shall we?
Last Words just moved to Blackgate, and received a warm welcome. It was definitely a smart choice for us to come here, and we hope to help as much as we can in WvW.

Yeah, the thread has gotten more readable. We know which guilds had the most forum warriors now. I know some of my fellow FAers would like to poke fun at the situation (which is kinda funny). But once that’s out of the way we’ll have nothing to discuss other than….the actual match!!!

Well, seeing as I’ve talked to leaders of several and so far, they don’t plan on leaving, it seems to just be KH. We also gained sF, who are in the process of transferring over.
I log on, and there’s 10-12 of us vs 2 massive forces of 30-50 (hard to tell with summons/illusions and pets) and I can see a number of people thinking it’s pointless.
So off I go pve. I prefer WvW when the 3 servers have scores between 200-300. Even playing against TC, I don’t remember round the clock coverage this strong. We at least had a fighting chance during Asian primetime.
Will sit it out until FA goes to tier 2/1 where they belong for their size now.
I’ve noticed that our Asian/Oceanic WvW presence has dwindled down, to the point where the NA presence seems stronger. I suspect a combination of factors:
- Some have gotten bored with the game and would only come on when there are special events.
- School has started.
- Chinese New Year is around the corner. There’s lots of preparation to be done, spring cleaning what-not.
- Ungrateful pugs who insult commanders, but don’t bother to spring for upgrades/ siege.
KH has also left, from my understanding (could be wrong) and they were on mostly during the oceanic timeslot.
The response is going to be biased if it comes from anyone in our tier, whether it be FA talking us down to recruit you, or us trying to recruit you.
I will say though, that even though we have forum warriors who have obviously rubbed off bad on some players, every other server does aswell, and they are most definitely the minority. Having been on CD since day one, I can easily say the community has just gotten better and better, and it shows in how well we work together in WvW, and how we interact with eachother on a regular basis outside of that.
Crystal Desert is an amazing server, full of great people that would all welcome you with open arms.

We used to always pound TC into last place on reset nights, but their sustained forces would eventually hold out, we would give up and they would roll us.
Hopefully this fight stays close, and I wouldn’t mind losing because t2 scares the poop out me – we are not nearly ready for that.

Not with that attitude. It’s talk like this that lowers morale. Remember WvW is a week long fight, not one day.

So today, FA received news of transfers to our server.
In celebration of our new allies, we decided to take it to CD BL. We didn’t have a chance of pushing to take first this week with the reset tomorrow, but we wanted to send a very CLEAR message to CD.
Next week you’re in trouble.
FA is on the warpath.Edit: PS. Your borderland is not a result of the transfers. Every keep fell in CD BL tonight. HOPE, RET and GODS wanted to show our new oceanic partners what their new NA presence can do.
Don’t get too kitteny. Remember it’s a thursday and people on the winning server lay off with this kind of lead. But I, and the rest of the CD WvW’ers look forward to the challenge.
Good thing FA finally woke up, wvw was getting so boring, wish we could keep this kind of action for the whole week.
We also decided to take a nap until reset night. Dolyak parade and then rest up for a new match I guess.
Oh, scratch what I said. It seems you get to stay with us and complain about “sheer numbers” for another week before you get to realize the winning server is always slated as skill-less and zergy. Cause no other server zergs, right?
Just because you zerg doesn’t mean you don’t have skill. [Hel] Zergs like woah, for example. They also work together better than the gears in a bulova clock, which for their numbers is insanely impressive.
Of course Zerg is kind of a weird term; it’s used as a verb but it’s not like you decide to have four full maps anymore than you decide eating food and sleeping every day is a good idea.
It’d be nice to win against CD and get that bandwagon rolling in our direction, but until free server transfers are over it’s probably for the best that we don’t pick up fair-weather Friday transfers.
You don’t have to preach to me, I’m defending the zerg (some of them anyways, not the absolute mindless rushes, but some of the huge groups that are organized for example). But the attitude and the whining that “X server only wins because they have 3x our numbers and they’re bad but they just win cause of that” seriously… is getting annoying. The winning server ALWAYS gets this flak, and the losing servers always cry that it’s this.

FA always has the best fights for me as IoJ. You know that what you see is what you’re fighting and there aren’t 10 more just around the corner like CD. Fights are actually fun and hard earned against them unlike CD who just zergs you with 3x your numbers and steamrolls through shear numbers.
That’s a good attitude to have. Because that’s the exact kind of talk IoJ is going to recieve in T4. Maybe winning there a little bit will clear this attitude.
