1. make a major pvp adjustment to self healing so that things die more regularly
2. don’t let any spec exist that can be nigh unkillable in 1v1 for ANY other spec
3. add some more optional feedback for what is happening in fights
4. never let premades fight solos
5. keep different MMR’s away from each other, i.e. don’t let high MMR’s farm the low
rating decay was a HUGE burnout mechanic in WoW pvp back in the old days
One of the first things they did was get rid of rating decay because it was COMPLETELY burning out a lot of players
agree that turret engineers are pretty OP in casual play
automated turrets are incredibly popular in most games because it lets the AI do your job for you. The turrets and AI are just doing too good a job on this one.
i wish non-instanced dueling was in the game as well
just great for practice and REALLY brings out balance issues amazingly fast because you will get so much 1v1 data
turret engineers are the most faceroll thing every created for the pvp in this game
and yes they excel at the primary goal of every single pvp match, holding a conquest point
kinda lame how long this has been going on. cut their cc a bit, cut their heals a bit and make it so they aren’t so strong sitting on a point with all their turrets
don’t really care if “some” peeps feel it is balanced in competitive pvp cuz peeps just attack other nodes. This still means the turret eng is too strong holding a spot. In casual play it is just lame, peeps get a lot of pvp satisfaction out of 1v1 and it is lame when turret engineers are almost godlike in 1v1 sitting in one area.
would LOVE ctf mode.
tired of node zergs in domination
pretty awesome that they are working on improving the pvp
In two years of playing this game, I have never once been whispered in PvP by someone who was worth chatting with. Do yourself a favour and block liberally.
this is so true
peeps that love or don’t mind the downed mechanic are literally the only ones still playing the pvp in this game. The pvp player pool in this game is tiny because of major issues, unsatisfying pvp downed mechanics being one of them.
still it is super easy to get into the pvp in this game with the normalized gear and no need to level. It feels good when you get to use your flash finisher on someone, usually after they disappear or knock you down 2-4 annoying times.
The pvp in this game is pretty empty for valid and obvious reasons. The remaining population is kinda the last people that will have a productive discussion with you. They like it as it is mostly and just want balance changes.
The devs already said their ENTIRE system revolves around the downed mechanic so there is no chance it will change significantly.
some mmo’s have pvp with millions of players. some mmo’s have tiny pvp populations like this one. Shame really, everyone had such hopes for GW2 developing on GW1’s foundation.
This one doesn’t appear to be dying. Just small and steady.
These dudes just never die unless you can get them away from their turrets. Unfortunately you are always competing over a domination point so you are always fighting in the MIDDLE of their 5 turrets. Getting cc’d constantly by an npc turret, getting damaged and debuffed constantly by an npc turret. Turret npc is constantly healing the engineer as well. I feel like engineers are almost as strong as anyone else WITHOUT turrets and the turrets just put them over the edge by a big margin.
wtf man
anyone got some insight on how to beat these guys? I’ve never played an engineer so I don’t know them very well. Or is this just some horrible horrible pvp balancing?
the loathing for this feature is so prevalent in the vast majority of players that have tried GW2 pvp and didn’t like it. The GW2 pvp population isn’t very big and it just makes me wonder how much bigger it would have been if they went a different direction on the downed state thing.
Downed state and addons. This pvp would probably blow up. Add in some controller support and put it on the new consoles as well.
still learn zero about other classes and are still stuck watching a huge number of nameless vague effects taking place in pvp as a new player
heck even veterans complain about the UI giving very little info on what is going on
the downed system makes it even more confusing for new players, they just see players getting back up like crazy and wonder how to actually kill something
I literally am tabbed out of the chat tab in spvp at all times (to the combat log), the chat log is completely worthless for spvp in this game
peeps that want to actually communicate anything worthwhile in spvp do vent or skype
game sorely needs more customization of the UI and/or addons to do the same thing
you can barely change it at all right now, just make some stuff bigger
one of the best things about FF14 is the integrated massive customization options even though it doesn’t do addons yet
2v2 is logistically the easiest bracket size for peeps to enjoy
very hard and time consuming putting together 5 man teams. Even in WoW with millions of pvp’ers, 5v5 is a pretty dead bracket because 2s and 3s are so much easier to organize.
flag capture modes for spvp would be great
or modes that mix domination, flag capture and deathmatch together in various ways
tanks need to be nerfed in pvp
tanks ALWAYS make everyone else’s pvp experience less enjoyable.
xp towards pve leveling (this would be a MASSIVE motivation to pvp)
a slow accumulation of gold/gems and any other cross benefits for the pve WvW side of the game. Not a ridiculously long grind for each item.
the addition of a 1 stage upgrade to pvp gear power so there was some form of progression. Cost would be a few games per upgrade. Even if it is a small upgrade, it is still something to progress towards. Update this every 4-6 months. Make the old set the new baseline starter set. (WoW progression style because it really is addictive).
In spvp add some kind of bonus (a la Last of Us) for the losing team to have some motivation not to quit. Damage/health regen/etc bonus for the losing team so they have a chance of catching up even when faced by a premade.
Some unlockable pvp ability to use in pve, WvW and pvp.
A compelling and fun spvp mode that results in a massive increase in spvp participation and the resulting dedication of much more development time to spvp because people are actually using it.
this game is more about a leisurely journey
try not to play it as a rush to max level
at max level there isn’t much to do after a while. Anet adds regular updates that are like seasonal events in WoW but not much actual content.
playing GW2 pvp is relative to other MMO’s pvp systems.
Generally other games let you customize your UI with addons making the pvp easier and more fun for them
Other games generally have straight up keybinds instead of constant page swapping to use all of your abilities. This annoys a lot of players.
Other games go with the healer/dps which is easy to understand. Can kill a dps unless there is a healer. If healer cc the healer or kill the healer. In GW2 the “downed” state and entire setup for revivals is just not as fun for most people. Players want people to die when their health runs out. It is the most dopamine rewarding action. It would be ok if GW2 just allowed more self healing or a simple timer for a rez that was standard on all characters but it isn’t like that.
GW2 pvp lacks any truly compelling rewards. Generally most games reward gear that gives you a power advantage in the pvp. It is addicting and fun to have an advantage over other peeps still grinding out their final set of gear. GW2 you play only for the fun of the pvp itself which, as is demonstrated by the tiny participation, is not that compelling for most players.
Balance issues: There are balance issues in most games but GW2 just has balance issues that are way more towards the “unkillable juggernaut” style which is the absolute most frustrating balance issue you can have.
Agree, the world pvp is really more lasting fun than the the spvp and tpvp. This game honestly is not that competitive in arena style pvp and the participation is so low that Anet doesn’t put that many resources towards balancing or improving it.
because the ladders are pretty empty
games need a lot of participation to maintain a good separation in skill levels on a ladder otherwise everyone has extremely long q times or Anet just lets wider and wider skill levels team up.
truthfully the best part of the pvp in this game is there is no grind to get geared up for it.
I seriously hope you mean stats and not relatively good looking gear.
I only have the combat log showing during pvp in this game
the chat log is a complete waste of my time, to read or to use.
There we go gentlemen, this is the kind of people that don’t give any answer when you/someone asks whats the teams’ strategy at the start of match, who goes where, etc.
Its the kind of people who seem to think they are playing with 4 AI and theres no communication needed. Its the kind of people that will stay mid 3v1 the lonely enemy instead of helping out at the 1v2 close that you called help for at the team chat.
The cancer of SoloQ.
dude the chat content during pvp in this game is similar to the worst xbox live spam. Just worthless and offensive 99% of the time. So much kittengery. No point enduring it unless there was some compelling reason to do so. But there isn’t. Rarely even directed at me but it is still offensive regardless.
Besides 9/10 matches are just two zergs running around the map, which gets boring fast, and the rewards for participating in pvp in this game are almost nonexistent. Definitely not enough to merit enduring chat vomit and boredom.

truthfully the best part of the pvp in this game is there is no grind to get geared up for it. Everything else suffers from various issues.
the pro player community is so tiny but they are seemingly the only ones being listened to.
if only hardcore players stay with the pvp in this game, the pvp will die more and more
so many things about GW2 pvp that could be changed to attract more casual players
just want to add my endorsement for adding any kind of compelling reason to pvp
and I wish that downed state would disappear forever
everyone is aware of how the game is designed. Problem is that it is resulting in boring and uncompelling pvp gameplay.
Thus the feedback that indicates a design change is likely necessary to increase participation.
regardless of your rationalizations, it never feels good to be auto-balanced to the losing team. Peeps like to win.
It really isn’t the best solution. Its not like peeps on the losing team ever get balanced to the winning side (extremely rare). It is a consistently negative experience.
Imagine you don’t have tunnel vision and try to imagine better solutions.
agree that massive self healing/bunker types make the pvp pretty boring and uncompelling
this is a consequence of a tiny amount of people playing
e.g. if you are matchmaking and there are only 20 peeps playing they are going to end up fighting each other regardless.
Either that or extremely long q times
Downed state:
- interrupts the natural pace and flow of combat
- does not spectate well
- is not fun
- precludes skilled 1v2, 1v3 victories
- turns a close 4v4/3v3/2v2s into a whitewash because of ridiculous rally mechanics
- promotes instagibbing
- introduces imbalances that wouldn’t otherwise exist
DS should at least be an option on custom arenas. I’m willing to bet that DS-disabled arenas would be more popular than default.
yep, pretty much all of this
downed state is great for chasing players away from this game’s pvp
If, in the alternative, you’d rather encourage participation, the downed state should be removed from instanced pvp.
Its not intuitive and its not fun in casual pvp.
if you were so right about how downed state is “OK” then the pvp side of this game wouldn’t be tanking so hard would it?
I expect matchmaking to be pretty horrible until they do something to encourage participation
it is pretty simple what the pvp needs:
more modes
no downed state in instanced pvp
better matchmaking (this is prolly frustrated by the very small userbase right now)
a debuff for all bunker/tank types in instanced pvp. Tanks/bunkers ruin pvp for everyone else. Do they want pvp where most players feel forced to go bunker/tank type builds?
support for addons to customize UI to your hearts delight, add more action bars, hotkey/use ALL abilities without page swapping, give useful feedback to the players, and a huge range of other things that addons can provide. GW2 developers are hard pressed for the time to do this so they should just let the community do it for them.
balancing of the classes for pvp
also needs a hook to be addicting which is generally gear rewards with small power upgrades or flashy appearances or effects. Or for points to be used for pve gearing cuz some peeps may not be fond of the GW2 pve endgame but do want the gear.
This isn’t rocket science. Any assertions that the pvp is OK “as is” are clearly incorrect based on undisputed statistics of participation in GW2 instanced pvp.
What it “needs” is a fundamental change from some stubborn pvp design decisions from the current developer/designers.
They’re prolly also facing hard decisions as to how much time/money they should be putting into the clearly unsuccessful instanced pvp portion of the game. Does it make financial sense to do so?
I hope they do. Only bought this game for pvp and I completely regret my purchase decision. Leaving a very bad taste in my mouth for this developer. They appear stubborn beyond belief in the face of obvious failure.
yeah peeps don’t play to be bored/irritated being farmed an entire game
you get your win, they don’t have to suffer being destroyed all game
ask for better matchmaking
basically you want people to sit there an be farmed by you because you love doing it. Doubt you will get much support for that.
more game modes
elimination of the “downed state”
addon support to customize the UI and get way more information about what is happening around you and ability to hotkey ALL abilities instead of the lame paging.
Glad your hand has found your back.
Lmao
GW2 pvp shows an amazingly large disconnect between the designers’ perception and what casual pvp’ers want
The UI is dreadful with the lack of support for addons and action bar swapping requirements. Also provides very little information. Might be OK for a player who has never played another MMO before but it doesn’t give a good impression to players with experience in other MMO’s, LoL, etc.
Its like the UI is designed around making it as hard as possible to use ALL of your abilities and figure out what is going on. Seems to be resulting from an exceptionally stubborn design philosophy on this one. One that doesn’t have “increasing pvp participation” as the number one goal.
Only one mode for the easy q spvp. Gets old rather quickly and lacks a compelling reason to keep doing it. Lacks that “hook” that gets you addicted to it forever.
I hope it gets better. Regret buying this game honestly.
edit: also not a big fan of “downed state”. Why is this a good thing in pvp? should just remove it from instanced pvp.
