Nowhere does Ranger have anything that resembles technology use. It is all nature magic. Affinity was the incorrect word. Using nature magic does rule out the use of technology, it just doesn’t fit and it is unecessary since you can do whatever you want with magic.
Also, it IS explicitly stated.
OnRPG: I knew there would be bows and things, but as you say the technology has advanced, so will they be more than pointy sticks on a string?
Anet: [Jon]The Ranger, one of the things we did with it in Guild Wars 2 is kind of go with a much more bestial and naturey feel and so because of that he kind of focuses on a lot weapons that are very natural. If he’s in melee combat he uses great swords and swords, and at range he throws axes, uses bows and short bows, long bows, and a lot of his spells, I got to mention the trap that [has] poison snakes, or he summons a nature spirit, and so we kind of embraced that naturey feel with him, kind of took him in that direction because we feel like that’s an archetype that people who play a Ranger really like and it gives us kind of an opportunity, you know in other places, to use the more advanced rifles and pistols with our [more earthly? doesn’t sound right..garbled..Sounded like it was a glitch or edited out intentionally..] professions.
[Eric]Yeah, I think we’d like to look at as the Ranger profession has evolved the same way that the world has evolved, and the Rangers have sort of gone anti-technology, they’ve gone into the wild, they’ve gone and embraced sort of spirit, and things like that. There are other professions in our, you know, five unye, as yet revealed, we mentioned Warriors for example have no problem using rifles. There are plenty of other professions remaining we’re going to use both rifles and pistols, and so for the Ranger it just didn’t feel right for them to be using firearms.
As the world evolved, the Rangers went further into the wild… away from technology, and more towards being bestial and “naturey.”

Yeah, Engineer got a Hammer, a rocket powered hammer that you can ionize, magnetise and reflect projectiles with because it makes you spin around so fast. More tech than blunt instrument.
And warrior got daggers and a different martial style, seems like a logical progression for a class that is already the most proficient at martial weapons.
Ranger got more nature magic.
Well, we do have a harpoon gun. Those can get a bit techy. Obviously for some reason the devs thought it served the ranger well enough conceptually. In doing this they also made the harpoon gun feel very nature themed with all the piranha and coral shots.
Aside from that, that article was 7 years ago, back when the core concept was made, and I think what draxynnic mentioned rings true:
Now, it’s still possible that not using guns is a choice that current rangers make, and some future elite specialisation may still go in that direction. But I think there are justifications for the line to be drawn where it is, at least for now.
It’s not so much that the core ranger concept needs changing – I think it’s great and I’m sure we all love the wilderness and nature aspects of the class – but given that elite specialisations are meant as new avenues of both gameplay and concept I think it’s worth being a bit more open to what a ranger could be.
Also, you keep mentioning nature magic and I get what you mean but, it’s only really a part of the kit. Rangers are also trappers, survivalists and animal tamers. The latter I think is actually more important to the concept than the druidic side of things. Now, all of these nature-themed of course, but they’re not all necessarily magic, nor does it have to mean that ventures outside of that box should be anathema, especially not in cases like elite specs where the devs should feel free to come up with new and exciting ideas (not necessarily guns). Especially since with more numerous elite specs we’re not all meant to go for the same ones, and some specs will appeal thematically to some but not others. I’m sure not all warriors imagined themselves as Spellbreakers at the outset.
On a side note, to make things less OT: I think it was a missed opportunity to not make Soulbeast more desert themed, maybe have some sandy visuals or a crystalline effect reflect the beast aspect into our soul or something. Bit more exciting than the green thorns aura we have currently, which I see some people being disappointed about. Druids were very fitting in Maguuma Jungle after all, and I think that as rangers we really should theme our new elite specs after the environment of the new areas we go to. Deserts are part of nature too right?
True, it is very vanilla, but wasn’t that what people wanted – a straightforward melee condi weapon for MH? I don’t think it needs to bring anything new to the table as long as it fills that gap in our kitten nal.
I like that the leap is better than sword’s, in fact would be nice if MH sword had a similar gap closer. Sword #2 does indeed feel clunky.
Well, I still want a ‘hunter’ rifle-based spec at some point, but this spec looks fun to play, main-hand dagger always looks cool, and it actually synergises with pets, unlike our current cosmic healer spec… Looking forward to it.
Deadeye.
I’ll give it a go for sure, just as I tried rifle warrior and engie, but they never quite feel right. I miss the pet and the rest of our toys.
But neither rifle nor pistol fit the ranger theme in GW2. It’s all about nature and those two are the complete opposite. I don’t see this happen in the near future.
That’s so narrow-minded. Rifles have for a long time been the companion of the outdoorsman and explorer. American longhunters used hunting rifles, and they were very much nature guys. If the problem is that rifles are manufactured, then we shouldn’t be able to use swords or any other forged blades either. A GW2 Ranger with a rifle can be whatever you allow it to be, you just need to be a bit creative. The whole idea that rangers can only ever be themed around spirits and entangling roots just anchors the whole concept into a druid template, but we already have a druid spec.
Souldbeast is a cool concept though, and dagger makes sense as substituting a claw or fang, very bestial.
Rangers are nature magic themed, not outdoorsman, hunter or explorer themed. A rifle has mechanical parts and requires the use of chemicals and other mechanisms to manufacture and operate. You can make a bow and arrows purely from totally natural materials without refinement. I think this is why most people do not agree that rifle/pistol is a Ranger weapon.
Well, my point was that thinking of the ranger as being nature magic and nothing else really paints the concept into a corner. Ranger in itself is a very versatile concept, with the druid spec hamming up the nature magic side of things, and Soulbeast going down the bestial path. After that, there are lots of things that ranger can be but then all we discuss is what it cannot be. Saying that ranger is not allowed to be outdoorsman, hunter or explorer themed is just sad creatively speaking. May as well have called it Druid or Shaman from the start then.
Well, I think the theme you are going for is more suited to Engineer.
I was never going for a theme, I was defending some other guy who wanted rifles. Bother to read.

As for the pets being useless. Outside of zerg fights your wrong. Provably wrong. (I say this not to be antagonizing. But merely to attempt to prevent an echo chamber affect. If I am asked to back this up I will. But an argument is not what I am trying to make out of this part. Pets have MAJOR issues in WvW zerg fights. But in all other game modes they have proven there usefulness. Both after and BEFORE the recent update to their attacks)
Didn’t even mean to imply that I thought pets are useless. In fact I don’t think so. Edited the wording in my post to better reflect this.
Players that want to play a pet-less Ranger are going to be very happy with this one.
No word on if it’s petless. Might wind up being an aspect sort of thing to overcome the fact that Rangers melt in melee. If it does wind up being petless, it will be interesting to see how they attempt to modify the rest of the Ranger trait lines without ruining the class (don’t have much faith in them accomplishing that, though).
Regarding the leaks yesterday..
Spoiler alertActually, it was said in the massive leak thread that the new ranger will be petless, pets will be turned into stances or auras if you will. Based on what type of pet, you get a matching aura.
It would be kinda sad and dumb if that is true. They’ve recently buffed pets across the board, and what would happen if a ranger equipped both Beastmastery and Soulbeast specializations? All the work they’d done on pets would be rendered pointless. A petless ranger would also invalidate several skills, and would require all of them to be reworked (lots of work) or made unavailable to the new e-spec (an e-spec that gives you LESS skills may not be attractive design). The idea of an e-spec being outright incompatible with core specs and skills makes me think this is unlikely, though not impossible.
Also, say what you will about how good/bad pets are and have been throughout the game’s life, I got into this class cause I love having an animal companion. Would be sad if we had to sacrifice that just to play an e-spec that isn’t a raid healer…

I think the writers forgot about / ignored that detail and will now find a way to write around it, maybe with an off-hand explanation in the next chapter.
It’s probably his cousin then. Maybe the nickname runs in the family. :^)
Salvage Kits: What does the “X% chance of rarer materials” in their description refer to?
Is it items like Globs of Ectoplasm? I’ve always assumed it was because it’s obviously not referring to the chance of salvaging higher tier crafting materials, like the chance of getting t6 cloth/leather/metal as opposed to t5. A BLSK with its 50% would hardly give you a roughly equal amount of t6 and t5 leather if you salvaged a batch of leather armor for some (crazy wasteful) reason.
I’ve looked around the internet and found plenty of GW2 forum and reddit threads on the subject but no clear answer, mostly speculation and data analysis. Even GW2 Wiki doesn’t seem to have a good answer. I’m confused cause after the many years of GW2’s existence it should be pretty clear. The item text reads “X% chance of rarer materials” not “X% increased rate of rarer materials”. The language suggests that the percentage is set, not a modifier on some other hidden value. If it’s the former, then it should be pretty clear cut after years of many people doing their own tests and analyses to see what drop event from salvaging matches up to the stated percentage (by “drop event” I mean the event of say 1-3 Globs of Ectoplasm being salvaged as opposed to none). If it was the latter, then the item text has been somewhat deceptive for years.
Just wondering out of curiosity really. Anyone know? Has there been a dev/Anet response or mention somewhere that I’ve missed?
Have a nice day and happy salvaging!
Arctic Explorer please. I’ve got Xmas gems to spend!
I’m all for being in multiple guilds. Makes the socializing easier. But since repping gives nothing, I just stick with the one I’m in with most. Repping a guild should give something, otherwise, what’s the point?
Repping changes which guild bank and guild hall you’re accessing. It’s a very crucial mechanic unless they rework the whole system.
Anyone reckon this will appear in the gem store some time during the winter season? Been looking to buy it for a while but I never seem to catch it being available.
I have just came back to this game after a long hiatus. I love my ranger and have been running with longbow and greatsword. With my friends out of the game, I am looking to solo pve for quite a long while before going to dungeons or fotm (is it still called that? :P). With that in mind, is the new ranger/druid with LB/GS still usable as a solo pver? Or am I better off with other ranger build? I didn’t quite enjoy condi ranger back then and I have invested too much on LB/GS weapons.
This is what I’m running when I’m open world PVE-ing: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRjUqQJL2qC+rAXLG2DKegD4R4jjj4p3bPAG9SG2YA
Power build on gear. Definitely works for your solo needs.
When trying to do the daily “X event completer”, certain maps have an awful lot of Nearby Event markers that can only be seen with the Content Guide on and point at nothing. They’re like phantom markers or something. One map that is particularly bad is Dredgehaunt Cliffs.
I think numbers will go up soon again. I’ve personally been on a long break from the game after I completed what I wanted to do in HoT. With no interest in raids I was happy to let my characters rest for a while. Now I came back just yesterday after seeing the LS3 trailer.
GW2 is nice like that. I can take a hiatus then come back without the feeling that I’m behind in any way or that I’ve been missing out. Hearing that White Mantle came back in the latest raid wing got me pondering raiding though, but now that they’ll appear in LS as well I’m all happy.
So yeah, if there’s more people like me out there, they’re sure to come back for this.
I liked the way he said Clawr Island.
I also realised just now that he’s the first ever Reaper. I keep forgetting he was a necromancer but Caladbolg was a greatsword after all.
Happy Anniversary Gaile!

[POLL] Which is your LEAST fav map in HoT?

I love Tangled Depths because it somehow reminds me of the different worlds in old collectathon games. There’s so many place to explore and so much character to the zone as a whole. I have absolutely no practical understanding of how the meta works however, and hardly ever see anyone actually doing it.
Auric Basin gets some dislike from me because of the WPs are always contested, and contested WPs often get my ire. There’s WPs out there in the world that I swear are never available when you need them.
Dragon’s Stand I don’t really count as a zone since it’s just a meta event, and a strict one at that closing off a lot of the zone, unlike say Silverwastes that has some exploratory value and freedom. It’s more like a farming instance to me, or a 100+ player MOBA.
Verdant Brink is just… Verdant Brink. It’s there, it’s great, it sets the tone. Nothing bad to say about it, but I like others better.
Gliding and exploring the jungle! I’m still finding new things and I haven’t even tried all the adventures yet. Love all the open world love and I think masteries are great (if a bit slower than i’d like without XP buffs).
In my experience, WoW has a lot of short- and long-term goals in the way of Raiding and side activities. There’s lots of content so for a new player there’s plenty of stuff to explore. Doing raids and similar stuff will ensure every now and then you get a new shiny item with a bit of (or lots of) a power boost. There’s a long term progression but since there’s tiers to endgame content one can be content at a certain level and still feel there’s more to do. Exploring the world at max level will mean that you are doing it for achievements and/or the fun of it though, as you’re not really gaining much of anything while killing the low-lvl mobs etc. You can go to the old raids every week to try for some cool transmogs or rare pets, with varying degrees of success depending on rng. Personally I was all over the fishing achievements and have always gone for completing all of them each expansion.
GW2 is different in that most of everything you do can go toward any specific goal you have in mind. A lot of GW2 rewards and goals lie in getting that full ascended and completing collections / getting skins. A lot of that can be gained with gold and gold can be gained from anything. You never outlevel the content thanks to scaling and you can always work toward what you want by doing what you want (to a certain degree). The goals in GW2 are further away but once you reach them, they are done. In wow every couple of years the playing field is reset and we’re back to going down the same road again.
I think both of these games can be seen as “grindy” simply because they appeal to two different psychologies. Some players enjoy small gradual rewards while getting a fresh start again each expansion when they feel they’ve hit their ceiling with the current content. This is the same reason people enjoy seasons in Diablo 3. This can annoy people who don’t like their efforts to be invalidated. GW2 appeals to people who want their rewards to be permanent, and want to reach their goals over time. In turn, GW2 can annoy people who want feedback or checkpoints for their end goals, and thus feel dissatisfied looking at the long road ahead rather than the short stops on the way.
WoW grind is about punching in and out on that daily/weekly, knowing what to expect and being rewarded each step of the way. GW2 is more doing it on your own time with less impactful rewards but with less pressure to rush to the end.
I personally like both and see the virtues of each system. I also play them very differently.
I think grind is an unhelpful term because people interpret it very differently and what really lies at the core is the satisfaction with the ratio and nature of reward to work put in. And that ratio is not as simple as amount of work/playtime = amount of reward but must include additional factors and dimensions. For example, the distribution of appropriate rewards and the psychology of how the player experiences and approaches that playtime (smaller checkpoints vs. one long haul, specific locations with specific rewards vs. similar rewards globally). It’s about long-term goals vs. short-term goals, temporary vs. permanent (either of which can be negative or positive depending on the player and their tastes!).
Try WoW free to lvl 20 and see what you think. Your GW2 progress won’t go anywhere (which is why I love being able to take a month off without feeling I’m lagging behind!)
I can live with those changes. Thank you for bringing us the specifics and clarifying that base damage nerf speculation in an earlier thread!
Probably not, but it might help a bit if you could clarify exactly what it is you are having problems with.
u shuldnt’ sell precursors, because people who buy them didn’t earn it lik u did. don’t let them pay2win, thats the whole pt of the knew system. only earned players git to show off the legends. come on!
If I got a precursor, I’d want the gold though. Lots of stuff I actually want that I can use that gold for. If someone wants to pay me lots of gold for something I would never turn into a legendary anyway, that’s a win-win. If that devalues the legendary status of the item, that’s a design flaw but not something I’d like to cover for by not cashing in.
I’ll keep wearing zerker for direct damage builds until the day I run into problems that I cannot mitigate through other means than soak. So far that hasn’t changed even in HoT (even if they’ve upped the difficulty a bit) so I keep running my zerker gear. I don’t like change if I can avoid it. :P
They dont nerf only 2 hits, also nerf the damage!
And what do you expect now? For the Beastmaster trait to be obsolete?
It’s common sense, that a pet does more damage with that trait line on rather than off, that’s the way things should work.
If you don’t like it quit, but don’t ever expect it to be otherwise than designed.
Not sure what you’re on about, but they meant the base damage had been reduced.
This is a fun build I made yesterday for PvE with my reaper gf. A modification of Power Ranger and works quite well. I’m sure there’s plenty other options and improvements one could make, but mostly posting this to show that one can find uses for druid that doesn’t involve staff (which i’m not really feeling when it comes to playstyle).
Did an attempt today and got into a map where two lanes kept wiping and pointing fingers in chat while the lane I was in ran circles for 40 minutes keeping preservers down. Luckily we all pulled through in the end and beat the event.
I’ve had problems with crashes before, kicking me out of the map when trying to loot the chest at the end, but somehow the game remained stable this time and allowed me to get both wyvern and tiger.
Very happy now but still feel maybe it’s a bit much. Then again, groups are getting a lot better and if there had been a new pet behind Teq when the rework was just released I’m sure I’d reacted the same way I do now. However, these days Teq is almost guaranteed win by any semi-organized map and it’ll be the same for DS eventually. I can’t say what the future will hold for the crashes but hopefully something will be done or it’ll stabilize somehow.
As a player who mostly likes running about in the world doing open events I must say that I’m really feeling like the target audience of the Mastery system. It really gives me a rewarding feel to log in and play knowing that experience counts toward something in the long run other than superfluous skill points. That right there made me really happy about buying HoT despite having little to no raid ambitions.
I want to see what Bubbles is all about, but it also seems the least likely dragon currently (but so did Mordremoth prior to LS). I think Kralk is the next target. He’s already been involved in story building up to GW2 and is overdue for a rematch. If DE were close to beating him then Commander & Co should have the talent and power to pull through by now. The egg also fits with this direction.
That said, Taimi’s discovery in the current story might also point to Primordius.
This is working as intended. You are not supposed to get this item in your inventory. It simply unlocks in your collection and then vanishes. You will get your upgrade/reward once you complete your collection track.
Finally an answer to this. Good to know!
The thing that annoys me maybe the most is, these events (especially DS) are incredible fun and beating them was a blast, but i don’t even have time to celebrate and be happy, because my game immediately crashes, sending me cursing and facepalming instead of being happy.
These crashes need to be resolved, and quickly at that.
Absolutely agree. I really like this event and I want to celebrate when I complete it. But instead there’s a crash and the ending is bittersweet at best. (I’m playing Ranger at that, trying to get a Tiger which only spawns after a successful run)
It’s not a good thing that players like me start associating this map with disconnections and unrewarded effort rather than the blast that it actually is when everything’s working as intended.
100% this. Got kicked twice today (and only during successful runs interestingly enough). First time all was going well until I got kicked out just before final stage. Got back in, and the map was full (I was in a dc party but apparently that strategy doesn’t work anymore). Eventually I did get in due to some other poor sod getting dc’d but after just a few more minutes a loading screen appeared and the ENTIRE MAP got kicked wholesale into a reset (we had an hour left, so it wasn’t the actual reset).
Second time I got all the way and beat Mordremoth, got to the chest and just before poof kicked out. This time I went back in and it told me “Network Error” when trying to rejoin my party. Nothing was wrong with my internet connection and I was able to travel to other maps just fine, I was simply not able to rejoin the finished map and collect the reward that I had earned.
It’s just so frustrating and disappointing to work 2 hours for something, actually earn the reward but be denied due to a connection error! And I was all happy there for a moment cause I thought I would finally get to tame my Tiger… The fact that the tiger is hidden behind this 2 hour unreliable event is bad enough but a whole other issue.
I even put several of my graphics options to low just in case that would help but apparently it didn’t.
/Heartbroken Ranger
Which one?? I bought Whisper’s Dragonvine and it worked perfectly.
I have the Priory one. Just to clarify: what do you mean with ‘bought’? I was rewarded mine from Prisoners of the Dragon story mission. If there’s something I need to get from a vendor that might explain a few things.
The Dragonvine Strap reward that was supposed to upgrade my back piece from Prisoners of the Dragon seemingly did nothing. Can’t find it in my inventory either.
As with many other posters in this thread, I’ll never quit my ranger. It’s my main and always will be. I’ve been tempted and I’ve tried switching in the past but it never holds. It’s just got that charm. Plus, now there’s all these new pets to find and it’s really fun exploring the jungle so far.
That said, I had little interest in druid at announcement and even less now. Might’ve gotten a bit excited closer to launch but hearing from what people say about it now I’m not really feeling all that bothered changing my build for something druid oriented.
Except that there are 2 currently on the market and no one has bought :<
3 – maybe more by now.
But folks aren’t going to be buying it instantaneously. Except for impulse buyers.
I’ll be waiting for the price to settle as all the impulse sellers try selling it to impulse buyers.

Edit: and it turns out you guys already found out
Well, I hope this dagger will return what I spent on it<
For item#1:
- fit into a cylindrical case
- something you would not want to get wetThat can’t be right, those are hints for item#2, as Lemarck does not have to steal something, that he already bought.
Edit: On second thought, I am wrong – he did not want to loose the item he bought 2 days ago when he was chased by the guards.
Could be that he didn’t steal enough as well. He failed cause he didn’t get all he needed but didn’t want to lose that which he actually did manage to get. The wording is “but he wasn’t going to lose what he had”. It could be interpreted as he didn’t want to lose item #1 or as if he didn’t want to lose what little he managed to grab.
I say this mostly because I find it weird he’d bring that cylindrical case with him and not store it somewhere safe if he got it days earlier and was going to do something dangerous. Then again, it’s a story so it doesn’t have to make 100% sense, and maybe he’s homeless/paranoid or something.
It’s possible for both interpretation to work atm.
3.5-4 Story continues:
(2 days later)
Lemark sprinted down the alleyway, an endeavor likely to leave one examining refuse closer than generally preferable, but this wasn’t his first time. He slowed for a moment to glance behind him, merchants still chasing with guards closely behind them. He was surprised they hadn’t given up, they must be very sensitive about their heritage here, the item itself was a bit too everyday to inspire this kind of rage. “Two more blocks”, he thought to himself, double-checking the sealed, cylindrical case he carried. His attempted thievery had failed, for today, but he wasn’t going to lose what he had to the muddy waters of the bay.
So this clue refers to an item that is somehow linked to a heritage, not necessarily the item itself but the place where it’s held. It seems to either be sold or held/priced by merchants as they are really angry at Lemark, and Lemark apparently felt it was necessary to steal said item. There’s alleyways, blocks and a bay, I’m thinking city by the water. We don’t have a lot of them in Tyria, aside from LA but LA doesn’t have much of blocks, and is 90% destroyed anyway.
Are there any reflective items linking to Cantha in GW2? Lemark doesn’t have to be in Tyria, he could have taken a trip overseas in search of an item (and us players have an alternate way of getting it). He could be running in Kaineng City. It’s far-fetched though, and it could be argued that Kaineng doesn’t really have much of a bay.
Another thought is something relating to Wizard’s Fief or Rata Sum.

The end of the sash clips into the front of the leg while in standing position. I’ve played around with the total makeover kit and noticed that the slim physique almost removes the issue (still a bit of clipping) while the thicker body type makes the hanging part of the sash almost completely disappear into the leg.
I know the corrupted shortbow and pirate needler are both of longbow length.
Personally I run with the slingshot skin though
Funny story: I read this thread and thought “Ah well, might as well try the toilet myself.” I bought 16 rare greatswords and flushed the toilet. On my third flush I got Dawn as well…
Chipping in to say that this is, indeed, the best dungeon to date. It’s got some coordination puzzkitten sses that are more about tactics than health sponge, bonus stuff at the end, great looks.
I was even able to PUG this one on the first day. Sure, we had one or two ragequitters after wipes, but we used LFG tool and stuck to it until we beat it.
Also, as a ranger I’m very happy that I could be useful with my longbow, off-hand axe and good use of different skills, as well as not encountering any areas where my pet was a detriment to the team (i.e. no mine fields).
I haven’t encountered any problems with Claw of Jormag since some time in spring when the sound sometimes went weird.
However, last time I did him the game crashed to desktop when he was on low health. I was able to relog and saw that he was still alive, then a couple of seconds later the game crashed again. I sent a report, relogged and then he was dead. Wasted time, no reward.
I’m not on as much as I used to, but when I log on I mostly cruise a particular zone I feel like doing and explore it in more detail than I did before. I really like walking around Queensdale and finding all those details I never noticed while leveling or striving for map completion.
So basically, just enjoying the landscape and the odd event.
That’s what I do for fun. For sating my completionist urges I do some Living Story achievs, but I’m trying to stop myself from getting too absorbed into that.
Have you already done that event in the same map in the same day?
