Conditions and stealth, it's ruining the game

in WvW

Mian.1945

The main culprits are probably PU/Perplex condi mesmers, we all know them. The staff / scepter torch clone spamming like a boss builds that spend more time in stealth than out of it. You pretty much wont encounter anything else now roaming. And trapper condi thieves being the other amazingly enjoyable fight you may encounter whilst roaming.

This game however is not balanced around 1v1’s in WvW so you need to move on, are they OP in this situation, yes they are brokenly OP. Does it really impact WvW, a game mode where the metric for success is measured by PPT? No not really.

Sure mesmers are not broken in big fights but one problem is they ruin roaming. Literally every roamer these days is a PU mesmer because they all know its the most survivable, gank-friendly class. End result? No other classes bother roaming and even the typical cancerous 3-man PU teams just cycle around the map on opposite sides to one another, permanently invisible taking undefended camps. Yay?

As pointed out above, neither stealth nor conditions by themselves are too bad (eg power thieves and condi necros are both beatable and OK), its the ridiculous state of Have Everything Sacrifice Nothing that PU mesmers are in at the moment that’s crazy.

To be honest, they screwed stealth during design for GW2. It should have been a sacrifice (eg stealth slows you or makes you do 2/3 dmg when coming out of it etc etc) instead stealth classes spiral upwards in power during stealth creating alpha strike gank monsters. Should be one or the other, not both.

Conditions and stealth, it's ruining the game

At the moment wvw from a mesmer point of view is balanced for the first time. There are builds in each profession that can beat me playing a PU mesmer. You just need to be more flexible in your build.

If someone has to play at the peak of their game using a perfect build to kill your build and sometimes wins when you screw up then that isn’t balance.

No one likes to lose but apparently no one wants a challenge anymore either. I enjoy roaming because I enjoy fighting not because I enjoy winning. I get frustrated over losses as much as the next person might but I also enjoy the fight while it’s being had regardless of the end result.

Who the hell wants to roam when every single other roaming group in the game is 3 PU mesmers + a thief waiting to find a lone player to gank into oblivion.

Until stealth is fixed to be more strategic instead of just gank then roaming is always going to suck. God I wish they would go back to the GW1 model for mesmers.

This is my main annoyance, their attack breadth is almost to wide to dodge roll out of, should be the same width as the visual wind swirl.

Night time

Just a small piece of feedback, I was kind of a little disappointed in the night time element (no MMO ever does this well, they all wimp out and make it basically the same as day with 5% less lighting a few luminescent light globes and changing a couple of mobs types).

I guess I was hoping for a sense of danger, stick close to camps, be careful where you walk, terrifying enemies chasing you back to the safety of your camp fires.

I’m not sure what the specific answer is but I’d go with less light and more dangerous creatures for starters.

In some respects the camps should almost be safe spots rather than the farming centres they become during the night. I would not have had the mobs invade the camp I would have had the supplies being necessary to keep the camp safe during the night which means you need to fearfully exit the camp to secure supplies as the central fire burns lower and lower.

The danger is away from the camp, not in it. Pretty much a reverse of the current camp dynamic. If we can’t manage that then at least make it darker and harsher at night.

Beta weekend players, HoT worth it or not?

Hello, I’m sure I’m not the only one who is still deciding whether or not HoT is worth purchasing.
To those who played in the beta weekend, do you feel like HoT is shaping up to be a good purchase? I feel like the original game gave me such a good value for my money, does HoT compare?
Is it still fun if you are playing alone? (all of my friends decided against purchasing HoT).

I know a lot of the content still hasn’t been demoed in the beta, but I would like you to share your thoughts anyway.

The Rev is fun, VB is generally fun, things are more challenging and there are many base game improvements, it feels more natural. Quality is high.

My main concern is the small number of maps, yes each map is quite large and complex but not so large that it equates to 3-4 old Tyrian maps. There will be a lot to do in each map once all the adventures and other activities go in, but I still worry about the fundamental size and longevity.

I look forward to being proved wrong but I would feel more confident if they said 8-ish maps. That’s the main sticker to considering if it is “worth” the price.

Roaming is OK but you will be coming across 70 man map blobs and 10 man “havoc” squads even in the wee hours. Be prepared to run a lot.

All T1 servers have multiple guilds that play in every time zone (some larger than others)

Whoever designed the siege disabler doesn’t play WvW much. All the current counterplay to siege was perfectly fine with the sole exception of golem rushes.

If someone builds 6 arrow carts to cover the gate at hills they deserve for it to be a tough nut to crack. If someone builds 6 superior rams on a paper gate they deserve to get inside in 25 seconds.

The siege disabler will turn WvW into trebwars 2 since you can’t use rams on gates anymore.

I plan on buying these tricks up and showing why.

^This.

Plus it will end the ability of small organised groups to use siege to defend against a map-blob. Cata down a wall, disable defending siege, roll zerg inside.

Its going to simply annoy the hell out of everyone, defenders and attackers alike.

Do they even WvW?

The disabler grenade isn’t going to empower defenders, if a defending team has sufficient forces to drop off the walls and get within range of attacking siege and use grenades, then they have sufficient forces to just smash them anyway. If the attacking force is a monster zerg then all these grenades are good for is a thief buying 1 min of extra breathing space (ie useless).

What it will do is empower the attacking zerg. Whereas now a smaller defending force can set up an arrow cart/ballista choke, now all you need to do is send in a couple of stance warriors with grenades, disable all the arrow carts and then roll that zerg right in.

It will have the opposite effect to the one these clowns are expecting.

/All hail the final triumph of the map-blob meta.

There’s a VERY high likelihood your video card is dying. I’ve had 2 vid cards die on me recently and both times as they neared death GW would start to crash like clockwork, several times a night.

Change vid cards, problem vanishes instantly. Also, just because you have a new(ish) card doesn’t mean you can’t have problems, I just replaced a 680GTX.

Look at your error logs for various driver/vid/3D errors.

Don’t run them into deathtraps.
Make sure you know what you’re gonna do is gonna be succesfull, dont keep trying things that keep failing over and over.
Dont be a kittenbag.
If something goes wrong, blame yourself not the people ( unless it’s Really their fault..not stacking, not listening etc ) In Which case, explain what went wrong and explain how they could improve it next time.
Before you move out, explain what you expect from the people following you.
Show them you know your stuff.
Make use of the terrain when fighting zergs.
Dont go head on in another zerg, use tactics. ( Ports, veils, flanking, fake moves, act like you’re running away..Let a mesmer throw a veil and turn around )
Make sure people have fun, dont be overly serious,it’s still just a game.
If you use TS…dont scream…dont talk like you’re an auctioneer ( It’s just annoying for others, and it’s not needed )..be calm and collective.
Dont complain about other commanders, offer help instead.
Keep asking for reports. ( zerg locations )
Keep asking for people to defend camps.
Keep asking for people to refresh sieges and to scout towers
Best one…NEVER RAGE,whatever happens.

This is pretty much the bible. The top three are:
“Don’t run them into deathtraps.”
“Dont be a kittenbag.”
“Before you move out, explain what you expect from the people following you.”

I see commanders all the time lead a pug group of 20 people into a dedicated T1 60 man guild blob then rage at their team that they don’t have enough PVT when they get steamrolled. People don’t mind losing, that’s part of WvW, they do mind just being led to slaughter then raged at.

The summit is at her place because she’s a kittening tree! She can’t exactly go to them you know. There’s no way Areanet would really be stupid enough to kill her off or make her evil. Like already mentioned it would completely wreck the Personal story beyond repair, especially for new sylvari players and what would happen to all the other Sylvari. If she’s dead, then would new Slyvari players being awakened from the dream even make sense? If she went evil wouldn’t that mean that the Nightmare Court won/were right? Don’t you realize how much that would suck?

They really can’t do that. That would be the stupidest twist ever.

You have no imagination, you can build any plot you want, its a game. You could have the current Pale Tree go berserk but the players/Scooby Gang rescue an offshoot which grows as the new Pale Tree, cleansed in a new location to allow for Sylvari continuity.

Not that I expect any of the above in reality but you can write any story you want.

I totally agree with you Tiger. After reading all the comments, I must say, there is certainly a lot of argumentative negative responses. Just because something is easy for one, does not mean it is for another. While there may be many reasons for this, it’s still the way it is for some. I for one am a bit tired of the snarky, sarcastic come backs by the “super elite” players who never make a mistake and seem to find any excuse to brag about how easy everything is for them, thus, putting down other players who may find certain events, etc. difficult for them. I found this instance to be a royal pain in the neck, never mind the reasons. Just frustrating. So yeah, we all have different play styles and level of patience. So show some love guys! Enough with the put downs.

C’mon, hypebole? This is not even remotely close to being some form of elitist issue.

Every single dungeon pathway, every fractal and in some cases, just walking across Orr is more difficult than this fight. I cannot see how you can somehow get along satisfactorily through the rest of GW2 and this is suddenly a roadblock. There are dozens of more frustrating fights to complain about before this one.

Whenever I see more Inquest and magitech I yawn. Such boredom.

Besides, when will we see the dragon himself? I seriously doubt that the last scene of trailer (something getting closer to NPCs) is Mordy, more like one, bigger vine or flower or something. Do we have to wait for the end battle to see who are we even fighting with ?

Well to be fair, we didn’t see Zhaitan until a few minutes before we killed it. Why do you expect we’ll somehow confront Mordy so soon and fully?

Besides, it’s been established that the vines attacking waypoints are Mordy itself. So in a way, you already have seen our newest leafy dragon friend.

Tell me again how good the personal story was again? I think it would create greater story if we were to see Mordremoth, not the whole dragon but a glimpse of it and the destructional power it has. Not just vines poppin out of the ground for the next coming months.

Tell me again how deadly and awesome this dragon is if he appears at the grove and then leaves and the pale tree is alive and the grove intact?

Because LA could be ruined, it’s not the home city or origin place for any player characters. The grove? If an elder dragon attacked the grove, I’d expect the pale tree to end up heavily wounded or dead. Which means the Sylvari as a race just went endangered or without any way to get more numbers. Which means the Sylvari personal story parts now are super confusing because even with time split and all, they are talking to the pale tree… who as soon as they leave the instance is a dead husk.

I’m sorry, but I don’t support the idea of Mordremoth showing up personally to the summit. A champion sure, but not him.

In Dragon’s Reach Pt 1 when you’re talking to the Pale Tree about Mordremoth I was sitting there wondering, is this just shabby script writing or is she being too accepting of all this summit business? Suspicions!

Is the Pale Tree already subverted by Mordremoth and she’s pulling in all the leaders for a giant ambush at the summit? Are the Soundless actually the heroes here by not being part of the Dream? The Pale Tree appears to be the plant version of Glint but is she actually? Finkle is Einhorn!! Einhorn is Finkle!! Ohhhhh Myyyyy Goddddddddddddddddd

When that shot in the latest trailer panned towards the Avatar I sorted of hoped it would close in and her eyes would be oily dead black.

The CC in this fight is barely a factor. A mesmer should be able to GS their way through this without blinking. Take a missile reflect skill if you want to cheese most of the ghosts into killing themselves for you.

This whole thread started with a quote from the devs about how one class shouldn’t have everything. I just can’t see how that can be rationally claimed with the current state of affairs. A large number of the classes offend against this creed with the warrior being the prime example.

I’ve got all 8 classes at 80 and played them all equally in WvW and PVE (not sPVP) and the only classes where I really feel I am making a build “choice” with associated tradeoffs and my playstyle changes in response to that build choice is Ele and Engineer.

(I must admit I have never played my ranger as a defensive build so I could be missing something there).

The remaining classes either have no significant choice, no need for choice or a single meta so strong it makes choice pointless.

Why?

3. Why don’t want mounts? What about riding on a horse, moa, asura is unattractive to you?

Because if mounts are an actual movement buff as opposed to cosmetic then either the game needs to be built with them in mind or they become (like in WoW) a content avoider. They become the open worlder’s version of dungeon speed run groups.

5. Because previous games set standards and convention that should be followed. You shouldn’t remove basic roleplaying functionality. You shouldn’t remove role specialization. You shouldn’t remove larger group content. They didn’t build upon the lessons learned in Guild Wars 1.

So every game after Game X should be just like Game X? That’s demento-logic. I spent years in big raid guilds in other games feeling like I was in a second job. I play GW2 to avoid that BS.

I spent years playing a magician in EQ, long enough to learn all the suck involved with trinity gameplay. I play GW2 to avoid that BS.

I have no idea how you play the game but c’mon. I spent 400k karma the other day for ascended recipes on my alts, couple of days later I look down and I’ve recovered that karma and more. I spend karma like water and always have around 1mil spare. I’d probably have 20-30mil karma if I stopped spending it on tradeskill stuff and alt gear/skins.

According to the GM, you stay associated to the server which you were on when the tournament started.

I’m not pleased since they claim that your association will graduately (?) change over time while they now tell me that well I’m kittened anyway.

Though I’ve seen several people who’ve been re-associated succesfully, once again Anet proves how morronic their approach on this is.
I just hope they think stuff like this through in future seasons…

That GM is wrong and dumb. Fellow guildie transferred in Week 2 and has successfully re-associated, I swapped in week 3-4 and have never changed.

So either its based on number of achievements completed on each server or its just plain bugged.

why no 'trinity' is good

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mian.1945

Mian.1945

As mentioned by others, the trinity gives a sort of self worth, if you will, to characters in MMOs. When in groups, a difference is made, for better or worse, by that character being there.

It gives a sense of self worth to the main tank and the 5 clerics chain healing him. Everyone else is just a DPS drone.

Most off you never played EQ which showed EXACTLY where trinity goes. It results in standing at raid entrances for 4 hours waiting for enough clerics to log in. It results in half the classes being not wanted because they either aren’t 1) a cleric, 2) a warrior, or 3) the highest other DPS class FOTM.

DPS classes just press 1212121212 and clerics spend the whole raid staring at the wall/ground/UI autobutton. The only one having any fun is the main tank.

Trinity is suck.

Played the first week of the tournament on Drakkar-Lake, completed the Meta-Achievement there (because almost every passionate WvW-Player got the meta in a few days), transfered to Piken-Square and I am still associated with Drakkar-Lake.
I can share the opinion of the most people here. I am playing WvW a few hours every day. This is just not working properly.

Same, I was on SoR and completed the meta in about the first week but got sick of there being only like 10 people combined on all maps. Was nearly unplayable (actually looking back it was a miracle I completed the meta so quickly).

After 2 weeks of effectively no WvW I transferred to TC and have been playing there ever since. If its based on WXP earned or caps or points earned I’m way over on TC. If its meta unlocks achieved then I’m SOL because I finished the majority on SOR.

TBH, if that’s how it works then its quite misleading how the explanation was provided and what the battle historian tells you. I still would have transferred because SOR was a complete graveyard but it annoys me that because I WvW religiously I’m going to be cut from rewards.

why no 'trinity' is good

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mian.1945

Mian.1945

I agree that the removal of the forced trinity is a great step forward for MMOs in general.
I disagree on the removal of the trinity.

The key word here is ‘forced’. I loved the fact that in MMOs of old you could pick a job, get experienced with it and then use your abilities to help others. Be it healing, tanking, tagging, buffing….everyone found a place for themselves. What I didnt like is that you picked a job and had to stick with it, whether you were good, bad, could get a party or not.

In GW2 I feel that no one has a job to do anymore and as such my place in the party isnt needed. Anyone could do what im doing and I feel somewhat less important. I personally would have liked every class to be able to forfill every roll, but there to have still been roles. Certain classes better than others at certain things, the choices you make in stats actually making a difference to whether or not the party succeeds or fails. But the chances of this being introduced are slim because, as it stands, we have no need for any role but DPS specialist.

But this already happens?

There are HUGE differences in class styles depending on how you spec, between bunker/heal specs and glass specs. A pure healing/defensive guardian, engineer or ele does a much better job of it than its opposite and vice versa.

Some classes are slightly less flexible (thief, mesmer, etc) but for the most part you can adopt a “role”. If some groups or people always choose DPS over anything else, that’s another story.

Stacking immo in duration was the WORST update done to the game. 10+sec immo = insta death cause its the last condition in the priority order (or not so far) while beiing the stronghest.

Enabling dodge while immo, could be a solution. But as you said, they should first debug it. How many time did i get immo at the end of a dodge … and how many time despite beeing spamming my heal, it doesnt want to work just because i was rooted …

^ This.

Duration stacks on Immobilise are way overpowered. It essentially means guaranteed death in WvW and its a pain for all classes (except maybe warriors).

We were fighting at the back door towards their spawn and held a back and forth fight for a good ten minutes while being bombed from behind and above. We finally broke into the Keep and then ensued a massive fight that was a mix of rolling balls, individual duels, parapet chases, power ressing, lord kiting and everything else you can imagine.

Was amazing fun, neither side had enough players to just zerg roll the other so it just kept going and going and going. I know adrenaline stretches time but it went for about 20 minutes of non-stop mayhem and chaos.

They eventually pushed us out but that was one of my top 3 fights I’ve had in WvW since this game started.

Mesmers in GW2 are nowhere near as interesting as GW1.

They went too far down the clone/invis path and didn’t put in enough feedback/power drain/confusion mechanics.

Mesmers need more interrupt, cooldown manipulation, feedback mechanics, especially AE, a AE skill that does nothing but add +X seconds to ability cooldowns would be amazing.

Single target skills that put an interrupt debuff on your opponent, if they use a skill during that period its interrupted and put on CD so the enemy has to see the debuff and quickly decide to sacrifice a short CD skill to protect a bigger skill or wait it out.

Basically tone down the invis/clone angle and go back and look at the awesome list of skills mesmers had in GW1, endless inspiration there.

how to make stealth not so bad or cheese

Stealth should be useless after the opener. Once you know someone is there, they are there. A possibly cool mechanic might be to link blindness with stealth… but we could just end up back here if its not done properly.

But the whole problem with Stealth is not actually the Stealth ability itself, its the skills and traits and enormous alpha that are attached to it. All the highest Alpha skills like Backstab, C&D or traits like Hidden Thief etc are linked to attacking from stealth or put you into stealth.

They should have realigned this so that the thief’s highest DPS skills were ones that had to be used not in stealth and didn’t involve restealthing and that skills used from stealth were the weaker ones. That way thieves would have to choose between opening with free strikes or having high DPS, not getting both together.

Its the same with the other perceived OP classes, no one minds when someone does something well, they hate it when someone does everything well with no downside choices being made.

A simple fix might be as simple as removing Backstab and imposing a 50% damage reduction on any skill either used from Stealth or that Stealths you. Would fit lore-wise as well, you can’t go all out with power when you’re trying to be sneaky, too obvious.

I don’t mind a thief using Stealth as an escape mechanic, its cheesy rubbish being able to use it for killing alpha.

Necromancer - Is it the most balanced?

Disagree people complain about mobility because they think they should have the opportunity to kill everything they see, people complain about immunity because well it’s immunity, and survivability is apart of immunity and mobility.

There is a spectrum between kill everything and being unable to be killed.

My Nike Warrior is utterly unkillable by anything less than 5+ enemy players with stuns and immobilise and even then I escape 75% the time. That’s not balance.

Notice how a Guardian has invulnerability but no one complains about that.

Some mobility, especially when combined with other skills (invis, condi immunity etc) because functional invulnerability at all times. That isn’t good game design.

What makes a server good at WvW?

I won’t touch the numbers/coverage thing but there are two additional things that separate servers

1) PPT management, making sure you take/hold/don’t lose things for the tick
2) Open field fighting ability, allows you to force fights the way you want them.

OFF allows you to break sieges when necessary, demoralise the enemy zergball aand generally dictate the flow of the map.

Something slightly similar happened to me today, crafted one type of ER material (Glob) and it put itself and mithrillium both on CD.

Best profession/build for zergs?

The current Meta for hammer train raids is “GWEN”
Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist, Necromancer.
If you have one of these you’re golden.

Pretty much what this guy said.

All classes contribute; anyone who thinks a ranger is useless for a zergball hasn’t played one properly. However, for guaranteed “pulling your weight”, GWEN is where its at.

Need repair costs or bigger maps.

I do not like having free repairs for WvW. WvW maps are way too small and now zergs can resupply their numbers in 30 seconds or less without having to worry about losing gold. This sounds awesome for those who get steamrolled all the time, but it makes it almost impossible to take any tower that is near an enemy home base.

WvW maps need to be larger. It would slow the pace of full map zergs and give way to better strategy and tactics.

The only way to accomplish what you are trying to accomplish and still keep reasonably sized maps is for the actual towers/keeps themselves to be more gated or staged in their flipping/building/layout. This however, would be some serious design change work.
