Why Isn't NPC & Player Culling Separate?

Why Isn't NPC & Player Culling Separate?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MrDmajor.7084

Forgive me if I’m mistaken. When I try to adjust the culling so I can run GW2 smoothly during public events, why do I have to make a decision between low frame rates and seeing NPCs and Enemy NPCs? Why are these 2 things not separate?

I honestly only care about seeing my friends, people in my party, and my guild mates (if I had any). Every other human player is expendable.

What I DON’T need is to take damage or be killed by something I can’t see until it’s too late. I need to see NPCs.

Thank you for bringing life to areas that used to be quiet and lacking, but now you’ve reopened an issue that should be priority in the next “feature” update.

Between enemy npcs not appearing and the inexcusable amount of particle effects how is anyone supposed to take “events” serious in GW2?

Does ArenaNet eve acknowledge these things as an issue? Sheesh.

When I do log-on, there’s always something going on in Orr. I like being able to run with random people and do stuff. I’m biased though, I’m not in a guild, my entire friends list seems to have quit a long time ago, and I don’t RP.

I haven’t experienced “crap” people. Just people wanting to do stuff and actually being able to get it done.

How come nobody can specifically describe what builds benefit from a nerf to Zerker build? They always speak of them vaguely, then when you take them to task they get defensive and deflect.

What builds benefit from a nerf to Zerker? How are they “more viable” now when the game play mechanics haven’t changed one iota?

Was anybody able to explain this? I’m so very ignorant of the topic. I do not understand what builds were made more viable? I thought this game was “no trinity”. So do healers benefit? Tank builds? Crowd control? Was defiance removed from the game or something? Please explain, I need specifics. Thanks.

The same people who say “no trinity” “no roles” are the same ones complaining about Zerker “meta” and making other “builds” more viable. It’s an all dps game. Moar damage pls. Thats what you wanted that’s what you got. Why would you put gear with a heal stat on it, when there is no need for that role to be fulfilled? Why would you stack HP and toughness beyond your personal survivability preference? Why go condition damage when it caps and gimps your damage output?

Aren’t some of you the same people who used to get mad at people for having magic find in their gear? Because it took away from what? Their damage output yes?

We don’t need the trinity, we already have the DPS monotheism.

Nerfing crit damage to “make other builds more viable” is a contradiction to that monotheism, yes?

So its easy to track pet damage, turret damage, and player damage, but damage from conditions break everything? Seems legit.

So why is it even in the game if it can’t be executed properly? Clearly if the OP can take the time to do the math, the people who developed this mess knew that condition damage builds would cap and ruin peoples builds in groups as well.

Why does Twilight Arbor gear even exist then? Why do Engineers have condition damage rammed into many of their their skill sets?

I’m sorry but that’s ineptitude to me, or maybe a lack of caring. Then they turn around and penalize people who decide to go full zerker gear and stats. I don’t get it.

Just like any game developer ignores the “minority” in the game. Honestly, a lot of the changes made to games, not just gw2 specifically, are NEVER intended with roleplayers in mind. If you cant adapt, you get left behind. That’s all there is to it. There’s always going to be groups of players that are going to remain an afterthought.

Yeah, if a very small group of people are going to be affected by a change that is better for the vast majority, then so be it.

So RP’ers DON’T want to be grouped with their RP’ing friends and guildies on maps when population is being distributed? I’m ignorant of how this concept hurts anybody.

The current system people end up by themselves on maps either because of overflow or a combination of server population and map popularity. If anything this will allow RP’ers broader options. You have a better chance of being in the same instance as your friends or guild mates + surround by more players who could also potentially be RP’ers.

How is this worse than what is currently in play? I can understand wanting a feature to role play better. What I’m not getting is how this MegaESOserver is hurtful.

Nobody loses their server, it’s just an option better than the 2nd class citizen “overflow”.

Let me be clear. This does NOT create a ‘better chance’ than what we currently have. Tarnished Coast, as one of the unofficial RP servers, ALWAYS had us grouped with fellow RPers. So long as we were on the same server, every player around us was potentially an RPer. And more specifically, most of the players hanging around in capitol cities (not LA, where most normal players gathered) were all RPers. This new system isn’t adding more chance to us, because we’re the main RP server of this region. What it’s doing is actually splitting us up, and potentially filling our server with non-RPers while at the same time sending some of us to other servers due to overflow.

They talk about servers being weighted so that fellow Tarnished Coast players would be theoretically put together, but what does that really mean? It’s not a guarantee. The guarantee is the current implementation. When I log on, I’m guaranteed to be on the Black Citadel in Tarnished Coast. With this new system, I’d be very likely to log on to the Black Citadel with Tarnished Coast people, but the possibility exists that I won’t. And the more I do other activities, like dungeon running and world bosses, the more the system will try to push me towards servers doing that instead of specifically focusing on Tarnished Coast. Because again, there is nothing in that system to represent RP as one of the weighted options. That’s what we’re asking for.

As it stands currently if you’re on a low population map there are no immediate solutions. If you’re on a high population map and get dumped into an kitten end overflow you have no other options but being alone.

All this solution provides (as I’ve read) is a fix to being alone due to overflow or low populations. The fact that they’re even weighting the system to take peoples server, guild, and friends list into consideration is a feature.

So again I don’t see why this is something to be “worried” about by RP’ers. What are your current options in low population maps and bad overflows? I’ll wait.

Yes, you are “ignorant” of the concerns. RP’ers throughout this thread have stated that dynamic encounters are at the core of some of their best experiences. Not all RP’ers are headquartered in one of the RP servers nor or all of them in a guild. As per the post right above you, some guilds find it impractical to move to an RP server.

How would “dynamic encounters” be hurt by placing players around more players in low population situations?

How are “dynamic encounters” being handled currently that is BETTER than what has been proposed?

All this is, is a correction to the flawed overflow system. How is this a slight to the RP community? All it does is normalize map populations across all the servers. What does that have to do with server transfers?

I don’t know why people behave like Guild Wars 2 is some game with comprehensive battle mechanics that warrant a “get better or else” penalty. All of the big open world fights are cluster bombs of auto attacking through particle madness. The dungeons are about finding ways to ninja around the trash mobs and cheap environment/booby traps. The bosses are about stacking up and using a magnifying glass to see what obnoxious buff/debuff it has so you don’t die by your own hands.

You must be forgetting or just being plain ignorant of the rest of the feature patch and what it will do. Celestial gear is getting a 6% buff so healing, condi, base power, toughness etc will be increased……

Builds are not reliant on just stats…. Runes, sigils, weapon selection, utility skill and traits contribute to the build. You could have full cleric armor and run your typical berserker warrior build and do fine. Is it uber effective? nope, but at least you won’t be completely useless.

PvEasy builds??? No such thing since the open world is meant to be a relaxing experience IMO. FotM, dungeons, dragons, and shrines can benefit from having some players that run support , aoe healing/regen, or CC(fotm and dungeons).

Though GW2 has PvEasy, the real challenge is in PvP. If you are too scared to challenge yourself and play pvp then GW2 isn’t your game. GW1 PvE was easy , but the Pvp was in-depth. GW2 will follow with the coming feature patch with the several changes to the game.

So no specific builds, and no explanation of how these changes make those builds more effective or “needed”. Just vague statements, baseless assumptions, and retorts to things nobody said. Anybody else?

No.

Core issues are not being addressed with the next feature-patch (though some good stuff is being added) and numerous bad design choices have been made. These are the following major issues with the game as of now that have not been addressed:

1. Conditions are useless in PvE and overpowered in PvP.
2. Toughness/Vitality stats matter little in PvE due to overused 1-shot mechanics.
3. Defiant renders control specs worthless.
4. Rampant class imbalance based on game mode.
5. Serious lack of build diversity due to low count of skills (and even less useful ones) and restrictively expensive gear re-specs.
6. DPS build supremacy in PvE due to inviability of other builds.

And these are the following design decisions:

1. Emphasis on temporary content is resulting in a MORE static world than if otherwise due to the fact the content is temporary and has little overall effect on the game.
2. Emphasis on large-scale (zerg-style) combat events and not enough actual group content has resulted in an extremely low overall skill level for this game.
3. Emphasis on high-population events results in people being unable to participate with their community due to the Overflow system.
4. Emphasis on high-population events coupled with guesting is causing major problems for smaller servers trying to enjoy this content.

Until all those get addressed GW2 is in a pretty sorry state, and are largely why I barely ever play anymore.

Yup I agree, they should add skins for high end difficult content that can’t be bought. Of course, there is no such content.

These days if you see somebody in stuff like Legendary Gear and Ascended it’s negative. People look at it and say “kitten you have no life”, or “kitten you must have a kitten load of gold” or “kitten you’re irresponsible with your personal finances”.

When people see you in high end gear they should be asking questions like “how did you guys defeat x?”, “What do you do to get passed phase 2”.

Nobody should have to endure some no-lifer telling them to “grind more or buy it”. Enough is enough. That’s one of the worst parts of todays mmorpgs including GW2.

Things won’t change until ArenaNet comes out of the bubble and views the game as a person looking at it from the outside in does.

They don’t solve issues, they solve the symptoms of the issues. Case in point with the critical damage. It seems like mistakes and missteps are hard coded into the game and that’s unfortunate. It looks like stubbornness or arrogance and their lack of transparency only makes it worse. Guild Wars 2 had/has lots of potential but what good is that if there isn’t a sense of urgency to do better?

There are so many clear bad decisions that have got majority negative reactions which go ignored or not talked about, then they point at metrics with a blind eye to the fact that the game was B2P.

Why is there no polling system on this site the devs use? Why don’t they send polls to their player base and ask how we feel about certain issues and get real metrics?

Regardless, I hope these new feature updates push things in the right direction but for every good idea they, muck it up with a few silly ones.

So I tried Wildstar and I missed playing GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MrDmajor.7084

As a person who is very vocal about ArenaNets short comings and questionable decision making, I’m going to have to agree with the OP.

After playing Wildstar and the novelty of the combat system wore off I was completely unmoved by the questing system. Say what you want about GW2, in general, players are aware of the world they are in. They may not care about it but even during a race to “end game” (or lack thereof) they recognize some in game characters, and they know the story. It is much more than “kill x in y minutes”. Wildstar is littered with that junk.

Guild Wars 2 can definitely take away some points from the combat pace and flow from Wildstar but my lord, the questing is just as cluttered as GW2 particle system. The raiding in Wildstar is ON POINT. Great challenges, great mechanics, great pacing and flow. Nothing too cheap, but difficult enough to challenge large guilds/groups.

What I did like about Wildstar was the Advenutres. They are instanced but they don’t have a dungeon feel to them. Very free roaming which was cool, I would like to see stuff like that for Guild Wars 2. It runs horribly so the whole “the graphics are like that so it can play on low end machines” is total kitten. I don’t understand why optimization is such a non issue with these developers. You can say what you want about consoles but at least they have constant performance quality of which they are devs are accountable for.

Graphically I at first thought Wildstar wouldn’t bother me but the art direction is really obnoxious to look at for long periods of time. I think it’s the lack of line art that bothers me. There needs to be outlines.

In closing, Wildstar won’t be the game that I turn my attention to because of the continued silliness from GW2 devs. There IS another game that I most likely will be playing, but that’s for another discussion another day. I’m fresh off a banning so I will refrain for now.

How is toning down critical damage on zerker builds going promote the health of other builds though? People will simply play the same and the SAME fights will take longer. People will still want optimal damage builds for their dungeon speed runs. The bosses will still do 1 hit kills, there will still be defiance, there will be still invisible aoe rings that people can’t see because of all the clutter. There wills till be stacking. How does THIS change anything.

I don’t understand the logic of the people in control at ArenaNet and they do contrived jobs at explaining themselves. The entire explanation was kitten. It read like a statement written by general counsel for a greasy politician.

If they feel there is any thing fundamentally wrong with the game play it was 100% their own doing despite the countless amounts of feedback and suggestions provided by the player base. They eliminated the trinity completely and did not provide the challenges to offer anything else more than what you could get from an arcade styled hack and slasher. I’m old school. FINE. I liked Gauntlet. I liked Double Dragon and Golden Axe.

I play an Engineer. When I first started I wanted to go for a condition build. I was new and naive to the game. I worked HARD for my gear. I grinded through badly designed dungeons countless times until I got my look and build. Then I was smacked in the face with the reality that my build didn’t mean anything if there were a couple other people using conditions. “Technical limitations” they said. I worked to get my zerker pieces so I could play DPS Wars 2 now I’m getting smacked in the face again for doing that.

I want to understand FOR WHAT. What is this for? What builds is Arena Net talking about? I don’t want vague beating around the bush with all types of semantics. I want specifics. The player base deserves to know. The people who worked hard for their exotic gear deserve to know. Those same people who grinded and grinded and crafted against their will THEN upgraded their gear to Ascended deserve to know.

WHAT builds benefit? Condition Damage? Healing? Bunker builds?

WHAT Builds?

Would anybody else like to contribute to a list of these builds that benefit from this change? I’m completely lost.

WHAT Builds?

Guys, please help me understand.

In a game where there is no “healers”, no tanking, no significant crowd control or positional control, what “different” types of builds is Arena Net trying to promote with the recent nerf to critical damage and castration of Celestial Gear?

In a game where conditional damage is an afterthought what other builds need to be promoted? Damage is king in GW2. That’s what they wanted right? I understand there is a build meta in PvP and WvWvW but can you guys explain to me what are these different builds that needed to be promoted for PvE?

Can anybody describe these builds, and how they benefit from this new change? Thanks.

There should be 2 gifts. Gift Of Grind and Gift of RNG. To make a Legendary you need 3 Gifts of Grind and 1 Gift of RNG. Gift Of Grind = Farm 1,000,000 of anything. Gift Of RNG is a random drop from a random champion mob that has a chance to appear with odds of 1/100,000,000, in a random area, random overflow, on a random server. Then the game should tell what class you are and automatically give you something you can’t use.

Do you even play the game? I have a lot of complaints regarding the new lion’s arch event, but particle effects obscuring bosses & their attacks is not one of them. I’ve never had an easier time dodging boss attacks than with the knights and hologram. The telegraphed attacks are blatant, and appreciated.

If you’re getting killed by things you can’t see, you need to pay closer attention.

Do you even READ? I didn’t talk about any specific event or attack. It’s a general and widely documented problem. Not every AoE ring is big yellow/orange one. Yes, you’re THAT guy. Good job.

Many of the mobs in GW2 have stupid and buggy leashes on them, but of course there is always those kittenheads who have to swoop in and let somebody know they’re bad at a MMORPG game =\

Yes, you’re THAT kittenhead.

Again. These guys do NOT play their own game. There is absolutely no way.

From DAY 1 of the Beta, the first review video I saw was a guy playing and making a remark about how the particle effects were sort of ridiculous and there was no major zerg going on.

Fast forward to now, everyone has particle LOD option ticked and it doesn’t make a difference. What makes it worse is that ANET keeps creating cluster kitten zerg fest content where people get downed and killed by things they don’t even see. Nobody knows what’s going on you just let your auto attacks fly and pray.

This is the type of kitten, that makes me log right off. The oblivious and lack of sense of urgency on these things from ANet is what makes me want to /uninstall.

This ongoing ignoring of issues like this is what puts the battery in the back of a so called “hater” like myself. Just remember the worst kind of hate comes from people who used to love.

More proof that people at ANet do NOT play Guild Wars 2. There’s no way. Either that or they’re the most inept people in PC Game development.

What rocket scientist pushed this idea through?

Fixing the Zerker Mentality

Asking the wrong questions. There is no “zerker mentality”.

The game removed roles and left one. Every single encounter in GW2 is a dps check, and when it’s not a dps check 9/10 it’s badly done.

Design flaw. Period. We’re just mice in a maze. Don’t blame the players for taking the shortest route to the cheese.

ArenaNet has made it 100% clear they’re not changing it either. Get zerker gear and stack son.

You don’t teach people how to play a game by throwing them into a cluster kitten where they fail or succeed based a complete strangers actions.

You teach them by negative and positive reinforcement for THEIR actions and choices.
