Thanks for all the input! I decided to go build my own desktop with an i7-4790k and a GTX 980
Well I come from the days where overclocking was unstable and severely reduced the life of the processor. Has things changed with the new Intel chips?
I am not planning on overclocking.
So I’m planning on building a desktop and was wondering if there will be a performance difference between an i5-4690k and an i7-4790k. I will be using a gtx 980 for my gpu. Thanks!
I am currently debating on whether or not to buy a laptop or a desktop to be able to play at 60fps with everything at max. The laptop I would get would be the ASUS ROG G751.
Its specs are:
Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz)
16GB Memory
1TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M 3GB
Is this enough to run everything max at 60fps (except crazy zerg clashes)? Or should I go with the desktop to get more performance for the money?
So I main a ranger but I feel as though I’m not offering as much to my groups as I could be. I’m debating on whether to level a thief or ele.
My question is: What does the thief bring to group content in PvE besides group stealth and pretty decent blinds? Specifically things that an ele couldn’t bring would be most helpful.
Will HoT finally add the much needed ability to save builds? At least being able to save the trait setups would be a huge help for having to switch out certain things during dungeons/fractals/etc.
Well first I would like to note that we do have one: Sharpening Stone. But, unfortunately, it seems that the preparations you speak of are already implemented on the Thief in the form of Venoms.
How is 180 toughness for you and your pet and 200hp/sec (with 300 healing power) or 500hp/sec (with full clerics/apocathery) for your pet bad?
It depends on which weapons you want/are using. If you are using direct damage weapons (longbow/GS/warhorn) the clerics would be better. If you are using any of the other weapons, apothecary would be a much better choice.
Overall I feel that apocathery is better because while rangers direct damage is nerfed because of the pet, our condition damage is just as high as the other professions in the game.
I’ve tried relogging
I have.
The only “fix” I’ve been able to find was to switch to my guardian….
I posted this on another post but I have a screenshot of the issue:
Ever since the April patch AC p3 has been horribly bugged for Rangers. Every time a Ranger gets transformed into a ghost, they lose the whole left side of their skillbar and nothing fixes it.
I’ve tried relogging, exiting the dungeon and returning, changing out utilities etc. and the only thing i can do to “fix” this is change to one of my other professions to get access to their utility skills.
Attached is a screenshot of what this looks like.
longbow: I use sigil of force (+5% dmg) because I like the guaranteed extra damage rather than having to build up stacks or relying on crit procs. Though if you want the most amount of damage, sigil of bloodlust would be the best at 25 stacks (adds +250 power).
Shortbow: depends on if you are going strait damage or condition damage but you can never go wrong with sigil of force.
I would use runes of the ranger imo or if money is a little tight just put ruby orbs on your armor. Runes of the scholar are also popular but you need to be at above 90% hp more than 50% of the time for them to be better than runes of the ranger (scholar gives +10% more dmg while health is above 90%, ranger gives +5% dmg all the time). Runes of the ranger are also cheaper that scholar.
If you want damage, full beserkers is the way to go. Once you learn the dungeon you are attempting, you shouldn’t have problems with going down all the time.
While learning, you can’t go wrong with Soldiers (Pow, Vit, Tough) or Knights (Tough, Prec, Power). Either of those will make things more forgiving.
I personally love to run Apothecaries (Healing, Tough, Cond Dmg) because it gives both you and your pet the highest possible survivability. You will not be seeing the big damage numbers that you would with beserkers, but you put out very respectable condition damage and your pet still does great damage.
Why is the flower on the right shoulder when every weapon is stowed from right to left, thus clipping through the weapon?
Why did they choose this?
I have never, in my 400 hours of playing this game, noticed the secondary effect of this skill: “skill cooldown increased by 66%.”
When I am chilled and I activate a skill it has its normal recharge rate. Has anyone else seen this not work?
In any case I suggest that, instead of increased CD, chilled gets changed to and skill activation debuff. Maybe 66% (considering chilled short duration) or 33% if that is too much.
ANET do NOT let such a big part of your world disappear! I, and my friends, would PAY to see Cantha again.
Confirmed Sea of Sorrows for Diessa.
Does anyone know what server works for Diessa?
Does not work on Yak’s Bend.
That would have gone A LOT faster if everyone had 30pts in BM and had skills that benefited the pets (shouts, signets, RaO). You didn’t use your utility or elite skill once, so this time can be shaved by a lot.
Ranger if you want more survivability (especially when downed)
Thief if you want more damage
Seems too much like the shortbow imo. Your 1 and 2 are basically copy and paste from shortbow
^That is a perfect example of what the Ranger class excels at atm.
I also had a warrior I got bored of (I didn’t even get exotics on him even though he was 80) and created a ranger. One of the best choices I’ve ever made. The ranger is much more FUN imo, which is what really matters to me.
PvE dungeons wise, rangers are definitely viable. They will not (I repeat WILL NOT) do as much direct damage as your warrior. If you make a ranger looking for high direct damage, make a thief. What rangers CAN do VERY well is surviving and condition damage. This is because their pets do not scale off of the ranger’s stats. This is bad for beserker builds, but is great for tanky healing power builds.
We have access to bleeds, poison, burning, and even confusion (on the reef drake). We also have TONS of evades spread across the GS, sword, dagger, and lightning reflexes.
Tl;dr Rangers are not made to do tons of direct damage. Rangers are made to survive and to consistent damage while supporting their party with many different combo fields.
Not for the Ranger. The pet got 90 and the Ranger got half before.
SoS now gives 180(!) toughness to the ranger and the pet! Changed from about 40 toughness to the ranger and 90 to the pet.
VERY happy about this.
Conjure weapons.
Think about it, it’s the Ranger’s WEAPON skills that are toned down because we have a pet, but since conjure weapons come from the Elementalist, they don’t account for this.
I’m thinking that conjure weapon + pet damage = one of the highest dps (single target at least) in the game. i have not tested this, but when I pick up the lightning hammer or fiery greatsword, my damage numbers of my ranger almost double, excluding my pet.
Thoughts?
Greatsword has the most damaging single attack (Maul) but the sword auto attack is the best dps of any weapon that Rangers can use.
Someone please explain how this new pet AI is a good thing with a ranged pet?
The “hit them from the back” AI change only applies to melee pets. That was clearly stated in SotG. So actually watch it next time before you go on a long rant about how bad the change is, please.
The rant is a valid one, we have all seen their skills in the past…so yea the ai will most likely blow chunks as their past attempts have.
What they did not address is if their new ai is going to screw the pooch in pvp and wvw if the pet is constantly trying to get behind the target it won’t be attacking. Would be nice if they are going to talk about something they cover all aspects.
Just one more reason why their should be a test server.
The whole point of SotG is to summarize what is going to happen next patch, not go into every single situation that is affected by every change. If they did that, it would be 5+ hours long…

Your damage is weak, and it is laughable you think a 10k chain is a lot of damage when a Warrior can regularly double that with Hundred Blades, if traited for it.
Why are you comparing a melee attack to a 1500 range attack? One is completely out of harms way, the other is completely in harms way…
Interesting… what stats on armor and trinkets would best max power?
Soooo many people disillusioned with the Ranger… So very depressing. But you know what? Still my favorite class. No one likes longbow, its a ‘utility weapon’…
Dev’s say the Longbow is a good damage dealing weapon and you know what? They are right. Good lord are they right. I reliably hit 10k DAMAGE on my Rapidfire against all but those with either protection or are built full bunker. My auto attacks land for between 900 on a non crit to 2.5k on a crit. Thats not the tool-tip, that is the number popping up on the screen. Did you know Rangers are the class that can reach the highest amount of Attack in the game? My ranger has 4k attack BEFORE MIGHT, 47% crit (with fury on) 77%crit damage 2.2k armor and 20k HP. And I don’t have full set ascended trinkets yet.
Please stop crying about how underpowered the ranger is. It would be nice to get some updates or buffs on the pet, and the utility skills, but we are NOT lacking for damage. Have some candy and suck it up butterball: 4k Attack Longbow Ranger
How so? (i.e. is there proof of this bold (literally) statement?)
Pets need this improvement for PvE, especially in dungeons. In PvP, however, this might make rangers too good, but we will see…
We can only hope that the ICD will get reduced (or better yet get rid of) for spirits.
Is going full Beserker’s the most efficient for PvE? Or is something else more viable because the ranger doesn’t scale off all of the stats as well (because of pets)?
Edit: Mainly doing dungeons.

Guardian will be more “tank” mainly through the protection and regeneration boons and Warriors will be more “spank” through high direct damage, might and fury, and vulnerability.
Guardians have the best defensive group support (shouts, consecrations, bubbles) and warriors have the best offensive support (“For Great Justice” and Banners).
It really depends on what you want: more tanky-healer with DPS or more DPS with tanky.
As the game stands right now, Warriors are the gods of damage in PvE, decent in WvW and not so good in sPvP. Guardians make any pug easier in PvE, required for super high end PvE (level 40+ fractals and Arah), great in WvW, and good in sPvP (especially for defending points as a bunker).
It’s impossible to tank in high level fractals. If you pull heavy aggro, you’ll just die, no matter how defensively specced you are. So it’s really just a matter of getting just enough defense to survive when targeted, and no more. If you overload on defense, you’re actually making it harder on both yourself and the party, because things will go down more slowly due to the loss of DPS and have more opportunities to kill you.
In other words, play smart and go with the bare minimum in defense, and no more. If you’re good, you don’t need any. If you’re not quite there yet, try to find the fine line and err on the side of offense, if necessary.
So what would you say is the “bare minimum in defense?”
Like the title says, how much health and armor should a guardian have for HIGH level PvE (i.e. high level fractals, Arah, etc.)
Is this just a L2 kitten ue? That is, if I know the content I should just go full Beserker’s. Or is there an amount that you should have no matter how good you know the instances?
So what type of accessories are best for their given stats?
Remember that exotics rings and ammy are a bad place to start trading knights/soldiers for zerkers…
What do you mean by this?
And by the way, I am looking for the most efficient stat spread, so any recommendations are more than welcome (:
I’ve seen a lot of people post their stats on this forum, and it has come to my attention that going beserker’s (at least in the accessories) is the way to go. Sometimes they throw some soldier’s or knight’s in there for at least some survivability.
Is this the most useful way to go for PvE? I ask because I was thinking about going full knight’s but now I’m questioning it.
Edit: I am looking for the MOST EFFIECENT stat spread, so any recommendations are more than welcome!!

Is focusing on boon duration viable without going with shout utilities? If so, which utilities would you bring?
I know that these two traits are in different tiers Master (Empowering Might) and Adept (Companion’s Might)
With that being said it’s not as bad as comparing Adept to Grandmaster.
I feel that the ranger’s trait is horribly underpowered not only because its a commonsense thing (it only gives 1 stack of might for 1 second only to your pet on crit) but also because it is complete rubbish when compared to the guardian’s trait (nearby allies gain 1 stack of might for 5 seconds on crit).
Does anyone else feel like this is way too far of a gap between a Adept Major trait and a Master Major trait?
Like many others, I feel that the Spirits Unbound trait needs to be looked at as well. I feel that it should either:
- Give a large amount of passive regen
- Give a large buff to vitality and toughness (to stack with the trait the doubles health)
- Make spirits untargetable
- Give spirits permanent protection and regeneration
Or all the above
