Asura may speak English (actually, New Krytan, I believe), but they name according to their heritage.
Neuro Damage: 5/10 Not according to lore theme, but it sounds like an Asuran skill.
My Asura is named Rexxa. I was trying to imitate Zojja’s name and kept mixing things to come up with it. Everyone calls me Rex in dungeons.
Suggestion on turrets that would increase their versatility a lot, even without buffing their damage or health:
Group them into a Turret Kit.
This adds versatility to the Engineer, as it frees up utility slots so you can have more options to integrate with turrets. Tool kit would no longer feel like a waste—it would truly be the companion of the turret kit. As for the F skill… I don’t know if this is overpowered, but what about something that say, gives back a third of deployed turrets health remotely?
Pretty good. Grenades are great for defending keeps, as you can stand on the parapets and chuck them at invaders. The ‘Speedy kits’ trait allows us to have constant swiftness, which is important for traversing distances. One on one we’re not usually the strongest, but in a group of three or more people engineers deal good damage while providing strong support.
Level 80 engineer here: First off, you’re right: turrets are crap. Grenades, Elixir Gun, and Flamethrower, however, are AWESOME.
Engineer does not excel at straight damage: Grenade builds are our strongest burst damage. What we do excel at is versatility (main weapons + weapon kits allow you to tailor your play to the moment), support (Elixir Gun and Elixir builds), and condition damage. An engineer is a jack of all trades, master of some. Notably, we’re not super durable, so dodging must be your best friend.
Ranger: Sound ranged class that unfortunately relies on pet AI for part of their damage. Haven’t played much of them, but I hear some pets are pretty decent, especially if you switch them out a lot.
Mesmer: Depends on your playstyle, I think. I couldn’t get into them at all personally, so no comment.
Thief: I think they’re alright in WvW? I keep getting smacked down by them when I’m not paying attention, anyway. Haven’t played much, again.
I think people are coming to engineer from the other classes and expecting more straight damage options, when we’re really a class that relies on kits and is great at support.
In the level 80 zones in PvE, I do get an “Oh crap” feeling when more than two monsters come after me. Soloing is… not impossible, but you have to be strategic about when and where you engage the enemy. On the other hand, if you find just one other player, suddenly you’re laying down combo fields left and right, throwing out buffs like a maniac, and doing a decent amount of damage when the other player has the aggro.
Overall, I love engineer, and I definitely won’t abandon it as my main.
Remember, transmutation stones allow you to apply the stats of armor you like to the looks of armor you like.
I use two personally, the Elixir Gun (ranged) and the Flamethrower (melee). And then Elixir B as my final ability for reliable buffs.
I’d suggest going into the Heart of the Mists and trying out all the skills for free, though. I found that Elixir Gun/Flamethrower worked better for my playstyle than grenades and bombs did, but there are engineers who swear by them. The right kits are whatever kits you feel you need to get the job done.
Additionally, the only extra lore the Durmand Priory gives comes in the form of their library. This library is open to everyone who visits the Priory instance. So no, lore-wise, there is no benefit to being Priory.
I cannot comment on Whispers since I haven’t played them yet.
Additionally, if you are still having trouble, you could always party up with someone and have them help you. Two players may have a much easier time than one!
Romance is not in the game yet, but ANet has mentioned that they are considering putting it in.
It would be interesting if your possible partners were determined by your personality choices.
I just hope I can marry Gixx at some point, ahaha.
Trahearne: I personally find him to be probably worst character. :SPOILERS:

Eh, I don’t mind him. If the player character was the leader of the war effort, to be realistic you’d have to be signing paperwork, telling other people to do fun missions while you sat around orchestrating things, and generally not having fun. By making Traherne the general, that problem is avoided: Instead the player is Traherne’s ultimate weapon, his dragon-killing Commander. Lore-wise, it makes perfect sense.
As for being upstaged…. Who kills Zhaitan, again?
It also felt natural to me that the other characters knew and respected him. Would they allow someone to become general they didn’t know, and didn’t respect?
Finally, I got the sense that Traherne quite likes and respects the player character. So overall, I personally am enjoying the story. I don’t have to be the absolute number one person in Tyria. I’m happy being a part of the dragon slaying elite.
Tengu for sure, Kodan, and I would look seriously at Hylek. I think there needs to be a lizard race, too. Like the Krait, but not evil. XD
