Interested in getting kind of a general community sense of this question, at least according to angry forum-goers who are presumably here specifically because they’re angry.

The patch says: Ranger Longbow skill range is now 1500.
If you look at the longbow skill #4 “Point Blank Shot” – it has only 1200 range.

Not a bug! PBS has always had shorter range than other longbow skills because of the nature of the ability. Originally 900 when everything was 1200, but could be traited to be 1200 with eagle eye while everything else was 1500. That’s just what we have now and is to be expected. I think having a 1200 range PBS is incredible.

Hey all, I’m looking into these!

We would all like to know how these blatant bugs got past your present beta testers?

Doesn’t this and other posting storms convince you and others that your present beta testers aren’t doing what they are supposed to be, yet?!

Hey, let’s be careful with our rhetoric. We got what we wanted—someone’s looking in to these! We don’t know what kind of constraints they were under getting this patch through the door. The important thing is that they’re listening and working on it.

Hey all, I’m looking into these!

I can log in and get to the character screen just fine, but when I select a character and try to load the map, I get the error and get booted. I’m on a college campus and though the game worked in my old dorm, the error showed up right after me being moved to a new one, so I suspect that that’s the culprit somehow. My only other suspect is if a patch happened around the same time (1/25-ish) and that threw off some settings. Otherwise I suspect it’s the new dorm.

Are there any useful logs I can get people so you can help me diagnose?

I’ve seen other people having this problem. It started doing this about four days ago. After opening the downloader and clicking play, the window pops up for a split second and then disappears. The GW2 icon is still on the taskbar but does not respond to being clicked and the client cannot be opened back up.
I have tried reinstalling GW2 and my graphics card drivers, and repairing the client, running as admin, and so on. As I am unable to resume play until this issue is resolved, I’d love to know if there’s any solution for this.

My other pet is a normal wolf.

I really like the alpy wolf for aesthetic reasons, but it seems hard to justify a 4 second chill over a 2 second immobilize. If the chill was longer, maybe—but it’s not.

Thoughts? Could I justify using the alpine wolf?

I would have been fairly happy if the current changes were made but pet abilities still refreshed on swap-out, and crossfire quickness actually worked. I thought maybe quickness as a whole, in the game, was being brought down to what crossfire has been for a while.

Now it looks like crossfire gets not even like a 25% boost from quickness. Christ. And I’m none too happy about pet cooldowns being messed with. I needed those!

Here’s the deal.

I’m a 0 0 30 10 30 bunker BM, but I still prize my killing power, so I focus individuals down sometimes by using a combination of entangle and quickening zephyr. This works quite well when well timed, though I need to be responsible with it.

There are three traits I want within two major trait slots: Soften the fall, hide in plain sight, and wilderness knowledge. I love soften the fall for how it lets you freely, safely navigate just about any map, though its direct combat applications are limited. Wilderness knowledge of course makes QZ and entangle both cooldown an admirable and highly useful chunk quicker. And HIPS is of course useful for a variety of reasons.
My grandmaster trait is, of course, empathic bond, so that slot is spoken for.

I could use some recommendations and help feeling solid about any one decision here. Please correspond.

Hi Robert—
First of all, god bless you. This li.d of dialogue is exactly what we the community needed.

Next question. I know that gw2 tries to keep its class mechanics to just 4 buttons like the rest of the classes but I think it can be beneficial to have more than four buttons to control a pet. We already have stow pet and stance swap unbound. What are your thoughts on letting there be more buttons, like as in attack/skill/dodge/stance/swap/stow? That would make six, all potentially nice to have a key for.

Plus, have you thought about giving players the ability to control pet non f2 skills, like the knockdown wolves do, for people who would be rewarded by that level of micro?

Playing with 2 traps (spike and fire) up pretty much all the time on my ranger, idk what you mean about only being able to have 1 up at a time. You can drop 2 or even 3 traps on top of each other, and have all 3 go off when an enemy steps into them. Spike trap is really useful in wvw, where I play mostly, as the immobilize (no idea where this comes from, heard it was from traiting into skirmishing) can be used for npc/player kiting, stopping runners, pinning enemies in aoe storms, or stopping someone from entering your cap circle as you are about to flip it.

Also, lately i’ve been seeing my traps go off at a long distance. Kinda not sure if its a bug, but if I set down a spike trap, move out of normal range of it, and see an enemy set it off, the visuals of the spikes coming out of the ground kind of teleport to ~600 range from me, while the player still gets hit with the bleeds and immobilize.

Spike trap or frost trap?

Othayuni.7369

I run with two traps, flame and one of the above. The third slot goes to signet of the hunt. As far as I can tell the advantages of each are this:

Spike trap:
-Has a decent chunk of damage, rewards my condition stat
-An extra second of immobilize can really mess people up, especially if it’s holding them in my flame trap
-Great “all in one” trap with the bleed, cripple, and immob
-Hits all at once if people trigger it, so they can’t mitigate by rolling out of the way…but also means that if they evade roll over it, it fully misses.
-Shorter cooldown

Frost trap:
-More powerful slow overall for a longer time, if you get just a few applications of it
-Combo field!
-Has the recharge slow, which can help subdue people’s heals and other junk
-If the initial burst is avoided, it’s more likely to at least get a few ticks in there

I’d like some advice and guidance from my ranger community about how to make a proper trapper out of myself. My current most successful build is this.

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fMUQNAV8YjAV11xVCWg2Bi2DKJJMxecIH9oXh0nyVqAZSA;T0AgyCnooyQlgKLVOqkUtIY8x5j9HvPA

…But it hurts my soul not to have loud whistle, and I have problems with pet mortality, between not being able to cycle them as often and dropping so many conditions on them with WS XI. Plus, loud whistle just has such utilitarian value; much more frequent quickness, more pet F2 skills…the works.

Sometimes I’ll try to include loud whistle by going 0/30/20/5/15 instead and using healing spring instead of troll unguent for condition removal. Having loud whistle is nice, but this is always a shaky setup; I feel like troll unguent and empathic bond works better for me overall in terms of survivability and I tend to find myself struggling a lot harder to live with 30/20/5/15. Plus, it’s rough having to take up my armor with runes of dwayna just to make my heal pull its weight. So I swap back to 30 30 10, and start missing loud whistle. Grass is always greener.

Lately I’ve been considering going double wolf with the 30 30 10 since wolves are still quite strong and will -definitely- survive the 20 second cycle (it’s always the snow leopard that dies). But then I wouldn’t have my awesome snow leopard DPS or chill, and I wouldn’t know what to do with skirmishing 10. I could put it to pet speed and take a third trap, but I feel like I’d really be lonely for signet of the hunt. Mobility is such a blessing. I’ve considered dropping SoTH and taking a warhorn, but I love my dagger.

I’d love something to settle on. Something to feel secure in, and good about. It’s just been endless waffling, and sometimes it’s been hard to test what’s really working better or worse. So I want suggestions. I want to see successful trap builds. I want opinions. Help!

BM past 15 seems so bad on paper.

I can’t help but not find a single 2nd tier trait that attractive, the 3rd tier trait gives some -very- humble regen (133/3sec or so, isn’t it?) and the 25-point minor seems like such an inconsequential boost as to be puzzlingly irrelevant. And yet, 30 point BM is not only very popular, but it -works-. Bunker BM rangers are a serious challenge for me as a 0/30/30/0/10 trapper (or sometimes 0/30/20/5/15; I waffle a lot. I miss loud whistle when I don’t have it).

What I can’t argue with is that 150 healing power past the 15 point mark is great if you use healing spring, and 150 to -all- the core pettributes seems like a great deal.

So is it about the stats? What do people even do with their 20 and 30 point traits?

Can you make healing spring good w/o Dwayna?

in Ranger

Posted by: Othayuni.7369

Othayuni.7369

It seems to me that having a full set of dwayna runes is pretty important to making healing spring a proper heal. The core heal (~5k per 30 seconds) is much worse than your other two options (~8.5k per 25 seconds or ~6.5k per 20 seconds) so it relies heavily on monarch’s leap or swoop and regen in order to actually have solid health restoration in addition to the condition removal. To its credit, it is the strongest heal over time if you use the combo field and have round-the-clock regen boon with dwayna, but I’m curious if there are other ways to keep it competitive that might open up my runes for something else.

Edit: This is with concern for spvp/tpvp.

Help me choose between two traps builds!

To clarify, it’s for s/tPvP.

Build A has 21222 health, 1610 power, 30% crit, 43% crit damage, 1098 condition damage, 1216 toughness, 100 healing (most of which goes unused since healing power is much better on regen boon than on core heals), and +100 pet stats, as well as +5% damage overall from ranger runes.

Build B has 21722 health, 1610 power, 22% crit, 35% cr. damage, 998 condition damage, 1116 toughness, 315 healing, 5% boon duration, +150 pet stats.

I think of B as having “less” stats because it gives up a considerable amont of precision, crit/crdamage, condi damage and toughness for vitality (which I don’t need more of), boon duration (5% seems like not much), and healing power/auxillary effects (increased regen duration/power in order to make healing spring competitive with troll unguent for amount of health actually healed. It does come out healing a bit more overall -if- I get round the clock regen and use the combo field, so that’s nice, but ungauranteed.)

Help me choose between two traps builds!

in Ranger

Othayuni.7369

I have this tricky tossup going on here.
Build A:
http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fMUQNAV8YjAV11xVCWg2Bi2jMJJMxecIH9oXh0nyVqAZSA;T0AgyCnooyQlgKLVOqkUtIY8x5j9HvPA

Build B:
http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fMUQNAV8YjEV11xVCWgWCimiMJJ2jD5oH9PkevgUuSFITC;T0AgyCnouxcj4G7Nubk3sIY8x5j9HvPA

Build A benefits:
-Way more overall condition removal (empathic bond)—tends to increase my survivability since I get stuck with a lot less DoTs
~5% condition damage (100 condi)
~6% damage resistance (100 tough)
~15% physical damage (8% crit, 8% crit damage, 5% overall damage)
-Roughly never go more than 15 seconds without some significant health regen happening; heal easier to “stagger” due to being spread out when can contribute to health management
-Heal more mobile since it does not reward me for staying in a ring

Build A benefits:
-Somewhat more precisely timed condition removal
+~15% healing**
+up to 25% more quickness (from additional pet swaps)
-up to 25% more pet abilities (fear and 8sec chill, from pet swaps)
+Pet survivability (from no empathic bond, more pet swaps)
-~60% time spent casting heals (.5sec per 30 sec rather than 1sec per 25 sec)—or otherwise read this benefit as much more rarely interrupted heal, which can effectively increase my heal cycle
-

**How I calculate this is rounded and approximate as balls. To share my reasoning:
Troll unguent heals 8680 total in build 1, and can be cast every 25 seconds. To give a common denominator, this averages 10416 health per 30 seconds.
Runes of dwayna means that it’s common for me to have round-the-clock regen boon on healing spring, so I count that in to the healing as the number of health per regen tick I get times 30 seconds. With 315 healing power that happens to be 169, or 5070, on top of the 5150 base healing spring heal. This comes out to a little less than troll unguent over time (10255 per 30 seconds)—but I also might monarch’s leap as much as twice through the combo field when it’s up. This heals an additional 1433 per leap, meaning my healing per 30 seconds comes out to be either 11688 or 13121 per 30 seconds. This comes out to be +12-26% compared to troll unguent, though again sometimes my regen boon will run out, so I’ve averaged that at +15% healing overall.

Any thoughts?

Yes I was trying for ballance as well. How much condition damage would you say? I can not get above 100 without giving up too much power/precision. Is that any help at all or would that be better served moving to all power?

Okay, this could be a while. I’m going to start talking about stats.

I have 1,098 condition damage. My sources of this, exclusively, are my carrion amulet and my 30 points in wilderness survival. This is enough condition damage to make bleeds do 92 per tick, burning 603, and poison 194. If I was going absolutely full-out condition damage I could get another 371 from runes of the undead and carrion or rabid jewel, but I don’t.

Carrion amulet gives me a decent chunk of power—and, after looking at the math, power is definitely the most important stat for scaling physical damage. The way I’ve come to see it is that power is your -core- physical boosting stat; precision and crit damage are bonuses (though it’s worth noting sometimes useful effects are attached to scoring critical strikes, which enhances their value). For instance, with ranger base stats in the mists (totally naked, no bonuses from traits or gear), a basic sword slash (the first in the 1 chain) will be listed in the tooltip as doing 202 damage, and have a 4% chance to crit for an extra 50% damage. You can calculate the average damage the crit factor will add with this formula:

((1.5 * (1 + [Crit damage/100]) – 1) * [Crit chance / 100)
I think you’ll find that with a crit chance of 4% and crit damage of 0 (crits add 50% damage), overall you’ll receive an extra 2% damage from critical strikes, making the base sword slash’s effective average damage 202 * 1.02 or ~206.

If you increase the power by 569 but don’t increase precision or crit damage, your basic slash will do 327 damage and still receive another 2% on average from crits, making its average damage ~333.5, a ~62% increase in damage. If you increased the precision by 569 but nothing else, your sword would do base 202 again but you’d now be receiving an extra 15.5% damage from criticals instead of 2%—but this would bring your average sword attack up to only 233, a 13% increase. From base stats, adding 569 power increases your physical damage by 62%; adding 569 precision increases it by 13%. See what I mean?

This isn’t to say the critical damage bonus can’t get quite good. For instance, with double berserker amulet, runes of the ranger, and 30 points in skirmishing (+1109 precision, +50 crit damage), you’ll have 57 crit chance and 58 crit damage. This will have each critical strike do 237% of normal damage and increase your damage on average by 78%, which is a sizeable chunk—but compared to that 1109 precision and 50 crit damage, 78% isn’t as good as a mere +923 power that still increases your base damage by a solid 100%!

So crit damage is very useful, but it’s not for being a core damage stat. It’s for pushing the envelope on just how much damage you’re doing once you have a solid power core. This is why I recommend a power amulet over a precision amulet. In the build I described above, basically my current build with berserker amulet, the average sword slash would do about 756 incl. +5% damage from ranger runes. In the build I’m currently using, with carrion/berserker, my average slash does about 500. So full berserker would have me doing about 50% more physical damage, but my carrion setup has me doing 59% more bleeding, 70% more poisoning, and 50% more burning. It all balances quite nicely, doesn’t it?

How do you make healing spring good?

As far as I can tell, making healing spring a properly viable heal option takes a ton of investment—namely all dwayna armor runes and healing power anywhere else you can get it.

Is there some way to make it a competent heal without all that crap? I feel like when I want to get healing spring I have to sacrifice so much of my build just to make it work.

Compassionate healing: Received or delivered?

Does compassionate healing (10p BM) increase how much healing your pet does, it does it also increase how much they receive, such as from your core heal?

And does anyone have any recommendations for the major trait that goes in this slot?

I’m not pure condition. I have pretty decent physical damage too, between 1610 power, 30% crit chance, and 43 critical damage. I’m intentionally getting damage from various sources because it suits my playstyle.
