I know some of you will think its not a big deal. But when will arnet fix it so Ranger pet names will stick. I find it hard to believe that this is still not working after all this time. How hard could it be to fix this.

They will “fix” it when they see it as a bug. Until then actual broken things are being fixed or improved (See the patch notes for today when they come out).

  • Traits need major reworking
  • Why, in 250 years did they lose functionality with their spirits (spirits used to affect all creatures in range, last longer, have much longer range for strategic placement, etc.)
  • In the same vein: Why in 250 years have rangers forgotten how to use stances and preparations (Dodge and Read the Wind I’m looking at you)

2) Engineer

  • “We don’t want melee or ranged specific professions” . . . except the Engineer, of course.

3) Necromancer

Have you ever heard of anyone that got a fractal skin at level 10? No? I thought so. If there really was a chance, it was so low to make precursor drops seem like an everyday occurence.

So, because you haven’t heard anybody in game or on the forums exclaiming that they got their skin at level 10, it never happens?

A low chance is still a chance.

Just going to point this out, but the spores also spawn in groups of four all over the place near the tower and on various maps. They all counted one towards the daily for me, not just the ones that spawn at the end of the events.

It sounds like you chose the slowest way possible to complete that daily; which is understandable, if you didn’t see the other nodes.

“Their kingdoms, once spanning the entire continent, lie in ruins, leaving only Kryta.” (-)

“The human race is governed by a hereditary monarch and a body of ministers which contains representatives of all the human nationalities.” (-) (—)

Are the people of Ebonhawk mostly comprised of descendants of the founders from Ascalon? Yes (‘The people who control this fortress are the last patriots of Ascalon…’ Ebonhawk wiki page)
Does the kingdom of Ascalon still exist? No
Does ones ancestry automatically determine ones citizenry? No

All humans on the continent of Tyria (aside from the people living in the free state of Lions Arch) are considered citizens of Kryta according to Anet.

In neither the Ebonhawk page nor the Ascalon Settlement page (or anywhere else that I could find) does it say that they are self-governed. Also, nowhere does it say that they are not, but since Anet has decided that the dignitary of Kryta comes from Ebonhawk, it’s safe to say that they consider Ebonhawk to be Krytan.

No. It is the last outpost being held against the Charr by the Ascalonians. Go there, talk to the npcs.
They are getting help from the queen of Kryta, Jennah, and her Seraph , but they have their own guard (Ebon Vanguard) and they consider themselves independent from Kryta, politically speaking.

True, its people consider themselves to be Ascalonian, but on at least one occasion, the king of Kryta sent his son over to Ebonhawk to command. This may have just been to command the Seraph or the entire outpost, we don’t know. But it is said that the prince successfully defended against the Charr at a cost of thousands of lives on both sides. This leads us to believe that he was commanding the entire outpost, unless it was just a slow trickle of deaths over a long time.

It is the same with the Ascalon Settlement (North of LA), even though the Ascalon Settlement is technically in Kryta.

I know, I was there when it was founded. (Useless Rurik ….)

Ranger Sword Slash-Kick-Pounce combo defect

Paken Kai.5970

I see. I’m just wondering what ANet is doing about this or are they actually gonna do something about this. Honestly, I hate having to spam 1 just to maintain damage on a target, that’s what auto-attack’s for.

I very much doubt that they are doing anything about it, since it’s working as intended. You’re not alone in not liking it, but if you want to use the sword effectively, that’s what you have to do.

As a side note, it’s also recommended that you turn off auto-targetting on attack. It allows you to move from enemy to enemy better with the sword, which is one of the benefits of having the two leaps.

Ranger Sword Slash-Kick-Pounce combo defect

in Ranger

Posted by: Paken Kai.5970

Paken Kai.5970

The “problem” with the 1-skill chain is because the second and third parts are leaps, which keep you glued to a moving target. If your target isn’t moving, they keep you glued to a stationary target.

Just like any other leap in the game, they come at the cost of not being able to dodge or control your character directly during their animations.

As people will start flooding this thread with, I’ll let you know the work around for it:

Turn off auto-attack.

It takes some getting used to, and no, it’s not something any other class has to do to use any of their weapons properly, but it gives you the control to stop the chain at any point and dodge / reposition yourself as needed.

This isn’t something that is ever going to be fixed, unless they change how leaps work. It’s a mechanic of the weapon that we just have to live with (for now).

Yeah, the race is won or lost by the first waterfall.

So to summarize:
Get 3 Aspect Masters before the first waterfall

You win

Actually, you only need the first and third steps. You can also just get the defensive powerups, which will almost always be grounded and keep it up to stop anybody from even trying to mess with you.

You’ll win, but people won’t think your being a juvenile cat in the process.

Please tell me that the PVP items work the same way and I can get them for any Character on my account. If not it was a total waste. Thanks in advance. PS I’m a PVP noob and probably should know this but I don’t. I plan to start PVP eventually but right now I play PVE only.

Deposit them into your PvP locker and they become retrievable by any character on your account.

My stance is that your selfish desires are not valid grounds to limit my enjoyment of the game by putting rewards out of reach for people with responsibilities. That’s effectively what you’re asking for and that effectively means impoverishing me.

None of the rewards are out of reach of anybody, unless you don’t actively play the game at any time. It’ll just take longer for people who have responsibilities outside of the game to achieve, just like they should. The whole purpose is to reward players for their ingame achievements. If you can’t spend as much time in-game as somebody else, there’s no reason to have the same rewards. Nothing they are asking for will impoverish anybody else, they’re asking to be rewarded for effort already put into the game.

My stance is that the game should accommodate for people with a job and other types of real life obligations, in so far that this game can be a hobby instead of a second job.

And that’s exactly what the game is doing. Only the living story achievements have a limit to how long you have to complete them. Everything else can be done at your own pace.

Nothing in this game is a race (except the racing mini-games, obviously). Why is it so wrong to ask that what a player has achieved in the past year be rewarded the same way a player doing the same things this year will be rewarded?

The recipe also need 40 zhaitaffy, crystalline dust and cakes. So this food will never be able to “settle much lower with farmers going for saffron”

Keep in mind… I’m not complaining hugely about it. I wont use the food myself as I do mostly PVP, but I do feel bad for the peps that rly want to use it but cant afford 20-40 silver+ for every 30 minutes.

If they lowered it to fx 20 zhaitaffy and 10 saffron per time instead of 50/50 that would make it more balanced IMO, still expensive… but more realistic price.

There is so much candy in the economy right now, and it’s so easy to get for yourself that it’s not a limiting factor. Also the fact that crystalline dust is now obtained by salvaging ectos means the price per pile is steadily (slowly) dropping.

Granted, over the course of the year, candy prices will raise. But then Dragon Bash will be around for another month to replenish the market. And, by next year, the saffron and dust will have much higher supplies than they do now.

By, “wait for the market to settle”, I didn’t mean a few weeks.

There was plenty of complaining about the range reduction before the patch came out in the ranger forum as well.

It would be logical that shortbow range is 900, but the same logic would tell me that throwing grenades should have a range of 600.

Do you even know what the difference is IRL between a longbow and a shortbow? It isn’t the distance it shoots. It’s the length of the bow.

This is a nerf. and it is not good for those who liked a 1200 range condition weapon. That has been ripped from them.

I am fully aware of the IRL differences between both types of bow.

I am also aware of the differences between both types of bows in the original game in this universe. The changes they made reflect how bows worked 250 years in the past in this universe more than they reflect how they work in real life.

I am one of the people who “liked a 1200 range condition weapon” and have to make do with a 900 range condition weapon that I spend the vast majority of fights within the range of anyway.

You ever used shortbow?

Yes, I actually have three on me at any given time depending on the stats I want.

You use skills 2-5 for damage? Are you serious? You think the 14% damage increase on skills 2-5 on shortbow was a buff for shortbow?

Actually? 3&5: No. 2&4: Yes(Bleed/poison damage is still damage). That’s the whole reason they got a damage boost. (Yes, it’s minor, but it’s still a boost)

How about making the range of the greatsword on mesmer 130. Cause thats a melee weapon right?

Mesmers can do whatever they want with their weapons. They’re casters. Heck, give them 1500 range with a war hammer for all I care. We’re not talking about mesmers.

They reduced the range so people use LB instead.

They reduced the range of the shortbow because it shouldn’t have the same range as a longbow. They didn’t increase the range of the longbow because it’s already at the maximum range available to any profession.

… the utility of shortbow is much better.

Granted, but they are trying to make the longbow the power weapon, not the utility weapon. They’re not doing a good job of it, but you can tell that’s what they’re going for.

900 on a shortbow is a joke considering engineers can throw grenades at a distance of 1500.

Traited, yes they can, you can also shoot the longbow at 1500 when traited. Comparing classes is not as simple as stating “They can throw as far as we can shoot” despite how much people want to do that. They’re engineers, pretend they have a robotic sleeve helping them throw. We can still shoot father with a longbow than they
can shoot with a pistol/rifle, which is a more direct comparison.

Damage improvement on the shortbow? you mean damage improvement on the skills of the shortbow, not overall damage. And it was definitely a nerf when a viable build is nerfed to make others look good. It almost sounds as if you don’t main a ranger, since you don’t recognize the issues the ranger class got in this patch.

Damage improvement on the skills == damage improvement on the weapon. Unless,of course, you’re just standing there autoattacking. In which case you have to stand slightly closer and may actually benefit from your group’s boons they’re passing around, instead of relying on yours alone.

The bows in GW1 (different game, I know, so please don’t try to use that argument) each had different fire rates and maximum distances. That’s what made them different. If you don’t like that the shortbow is now a medium-range weapon, like a shortbow SHOULD be, then that’s fine. I’m not going to try to argue with your opinion. But I think that’s how it should have been to begin with, and this was a long time coming.

Retaliation change

in Suggestions

Posted by: Paken Kai.5970

Paken Kai.5970

I did a search on the entire forum and only found a real conversation about retaliation in the Ranger forum. So I’ll post my suggestion from there here (keeping in mind that while I main a ranger I currently have a retal-based guardian and feel that the change has to be made or at least considered).

Basically, I suggest a modified version of the formula used for GW1s Pain Inverter .

Have Retaliation deal a percentage of the damage done to the person back to the attacker, not a flat number. The percentage could still be tied to the caster’s Power, but would be somewhere between 50 – 110% of the damage being “reflected” back to the attacker (maybe just topping out at 90-100%, I’ll leave the actual numbers open for discussion [could also be different in dungeons so bosses aren’t one-shotting themselves, ect.]).

That way, if you see a player with retaliation you have to make a decision weather you want to hit them hard or not. At the moment it makes more sense to devastate a player with retaliation with your largest attack, because the damage reflected is paltry compared to the damage dealt. On the other hand, if a ranger barrages a zerg without knowing there’s a guardian specced for retaliation they get to watch themselves implode with 400-500 damage being done to them compared to the 250(ish) damage being dealt per hit.

There needs to be some middle ground between “I’ll only take 400 damage for this one giant hit” and “If I use a skill that damages everybody down there, I’ll die instantly.” (despite how fun it is to watch people do this to themselves)

I don’t know weather this would be considered a nerf or a huge (possibly broken) implementation of the boon. but right now, it’s not in a happy place (neither is confusion, but that’s a different conversation).

Barrage ---> Retaliation?

in Ranger

Posted by: Paken Kai.5970

I think they should use a modified version of the formula used in Pain Inverter in GW.

It was based on the damage done to the person (starting at 100-140%) but with an upper limit of how much one tick of damage from it could do (80 per tick).

The maximum damage per tick would have to be raised or eliminated because HP max is so much higher in GW2 than it was in GW1, as are the numbers that some classes can deal as damage. I would, personally, make the percentage be 50-110% based on the applier’s power. That way, you COULD deal a large amount of damage with it, but you’d have to spec heavily for power, which would make you less survivable.

I can’t tell you for certain, but I know that the first time I ran the dungeon we had a level 11 ranger and a level 40 guardian mixed in there (the rest were 80, so that probably turned the tables, since I’ve also three-manned the dungeon with level 80s).

I think it mostly depends on what skills/traits you currently have for your level, as well as group composition. Stability is super helpful, as are projectile reflect/absorb skills (I mostly run with a guardian who has access to group/area versions of all of the above).

I’m lucky in that when I do any gungeon, it’s almost always mostly with guild members, who understand that even though the adds are dealing “less” damage, they’re still dealing damage or giving you more to worry about than a single champion does on its own. So we always tend to focus down the adds before fighting the champion/boss.

It sounds like you had bad groups both times. Remember, especially in PUGS, communication is key. If you think there may be a better way of dealing with a situation, speak up. There’s no reason to try the same plan of attack over and over if it’s not working.

Spider (Jungle or Cave, depending on whether I deem extra immobilize or weakness/vulnerability more useful for the current situation): I prefer the higher vitality than a devourer’s higher toughness to mitigate condition damage better, at the cost of more micromanagement (spider’s don’t retreat . . . ever).

Water:
Rainbow Jellyfish: As stated above, freezing the enemy is amazingly useful. As is having an underwater water and smoke field.

Armor fish: Tanky enough to stay alive until I can swap back to my jelly. Having an on-command stun that acts as a leap (in combination of the two fields from the jellyfish) is really nice.

Pet is almost always on passive, so I can keep track of its movement/target more easily.

Since you are clearly not going to be swayed by my explanation of the situation as I can see it, I’m not going to bother trying to change your mind. I will however dignify your questions with a response, because they deserve answers as best as I can and others may be able to see things differently.

If I were to use “Guard” to position my pet outside an enemy keep and I then run inside the keep before his “stay put” timer expires and the enemy repairs the door after I’ve run in, what innate non-magical ability is my pet using to get to me? He will, you know.

When I get too far from him in any scenario and he instantly appears at my side, what non-magical ability did he use to accomplish that?

I’m fascinated.

All sarcasm being ignored (yes, I can see it), I’m well aware of the teleporting the pet can do. Having your pet “magically” return to you when it’s “caught” on something is a much better situation than having it caught on a rock on the other side of the map (I’ll let people who don’t want their ranger to have a pet argue that point separately). If you’ve ever played any game where you have to escort somebody, but they can’t path around any deviation of their projected path (piece of rubble that you can easily walk around, or whatever), you know this to be fact. Most people are willing to suspend disbelief enough for this to not be a problem.

Having your pet teleport to you in cases where it gets out of range and having your pet teleport to any location you desire are two completely separate things. Your pet WANTS to be with you to defend you. With that in mind, your pet will refuse to go anywhere that it can’t return to you from (ie. the bottom of a wall when defending a keep). And, programatically, this is accomplished by having your pet need to be able to path to your target location. That is what is happening, that is why you cannot send your pet down from the wall, and that is why you cannot send your pet inside the keep from outside the wall. There is not other explanation. If you can’t accept this one, I’m not going to try to make you.

P.S.: Referencing your comment concerning fixing Guard to the way it was intended. So, in your estimation, a Ranger is so overpowered that ArenaNet decided that when in Keep Defense, a Ranger’s damage output should be reduced by approximately 40%-50%?

Not at all, in my estimation, Anet decided the skill wasn’t working the way THEY intended it, so they changed it. There’s nothing you or I can do about that, except get over it and play with what you have. I never used to be able to send my pet down from a wall, and I no longer can. Was it nice to be able to when I could? Of course. But it was obviously not the intent of Anet that that should be possible. Otherwise they would not have changed it.

P.S. Just because I can see where they’re coming from, doesn’t mean I can’t see your side either. I actually agree with you on many points you brought up. I like being able to send my pet where I want it, but on the other hand, it doesn’t make sense to have your pet just randomly teleport to wherever you want it. In my opinion, when you set your pet to guard an area, it should do so, no matter where you are. It should also take any route possible to get to where you want it (even if that means jumping off a wall and taking damage). When your pet is guarding, the “leash” that is on it that teleports it to you when you get too far away, should no longer have any effect, allowing you to place your pet in a valid location letting you go into a keep, up the stairs and onto the wall without it leaving its spot. This is how it was in GW with the flags (aside from having the pet jump off cliffs if needs be), so I don’t see why it shouldn’t be possible in GW2.

A simple fix to (some) pet control issues

in Ranger

First fix: Stowing pets.
If you got your pet stowed away, and take damage, the pet jumps right back into the game, attempting to defend you. This may or may not be desired, depending on the circumstances. How to fix it?
We use the aggro button!
If the aggro button is on “aggressive”, a stowed pet will respond to the owner taking damage, if it’s on passive, it will not. A change to one line of code, probably.

It has been said many times that a perma-stow option would not be implemented. I’d be happy with environmental damage not bringing the pet out, though (Gryphonrock run, I’m looking at you). They were able to remove the damage to my armour for falling to my death, why not have the same check when your pet is stowed. That way, if you’re actually attacked, your pet comes out, but if you stub your toe it doesn’t bother.

Second fix: Pet drawing unwanted aggro just by walking beside you.
Currently, the pet is walking pretty far off, when out of combat, which might draw aggro, when trying to squeeze your way in between a mob and a wall unnoticed.
This one is trickier. Basically, what I suggest, is to change the pathing behavior of the pet, depending on the aggression settings.
If the pet is put on aggressive, it will walk slightly up front, to the left or the right, just like it currently does. However, if you put your pet on passive, it will trail behind you, maybe half as far, as it walks now, minimizing the area, the two of you combined cover and thus making it easier to bypass opponents.

I agree with this modification, but also point out that if you stow your pet, you only take up one character space and it’s easier to maneuver between groups of enemies. And it would remain the case even if this change were implemented (especially if any of the groups are moving, they still may see your pet behind you).

Third fix: Pets getting into fights even when on passive
No matter what. If you take damage, the pet goes berserk… No exceptions… And if it has to draw the aggro of 40 mobs in the progress, noone harms its master and gets away with it.
I don’t know, whether this one is still needed with the above changes, but adding a third aggression option, neutral, and setting it as what’s currently labelled as passive, then making passive truly be passive, would probably fix this too. But as I said, with the above changes, this one is probably not needed anymore, as basically, aggressive = aggressive, neutral = passive and passive = stowed+passive.
Only problem is, I don’t think, you should be able to stow pets away while in battle, but I DO think, you should be able to set the pet to full passive during battle. That’s why this option is not completely off the table.

I don’t know if I’m not understanding your explanation of the situation you’re trying to fix, or I have never come across it (probably the former). But if my pet takes agro away from me when set to passive, I don’t think that’s a problem. I don’t recall any situation where my passive pet has agroed more enemies onto me than I would have with my kiting. When my pets are set to passive, I have to actively tell them to defend themselves or me. Otherwise, they just sit there and watch me die, or watch the enemy kill them.

But, there’s this magical ability called Guard that used to work and now doesn’t. It let pets “leap” off walls without damage before. The pet didn’t have to “find a path” through an open gate; it has changed. Why?

I get that they desired to change the outside in scenario, I don’t get the inside out change. That makes no sense.

Ah yes, the “magical” ability that was not functioning as intended and was changed to function as intended.

The reason the inside-out changed with the outside-in is because, to the game, they are the same situation. The pet is in a location that it can’t find a path to the location you are attempting to get it to. The game doesn’t care if you’re at the bottom of a cliff, or the top. If there’s not path, there’s no path.

Your pet is not magical in any way. It does not have access to a mesmer portal, nor can it shodowstep like a skelk.

Congrats on working for Amazon.

I also work as a programmer (much smaller site and a stand-alone application), and have a very good understanding of how a site like Amazon would be set up (one of the projects I had to do was to make a simple emulation of the functionality of Amazon, so I know how complicated it can be). Does that claim make my point of view have any more credence than it did before? I didn’t think so.

Without actually seeing the code, there is no way to determine what is related to what in there. There could have been a minor typo in the code of a patch that nobody caught which caused the spear to no longer hit, or the illusions to lose their weapons. These will both be fixed at some point. as they aren’t game breaking (well, the spear is pretty horrible, but you have the trident, which I find much more useful anyway [/personal opinion]).

The obstructed problem is a known issue, has been given a partial fix and is not nearly as big of a problem as you are making it out to be (unless it’s any stationary environmental object [AC burrow, I’m looking at you], for whatever reason). They know it’s a problem and are trying to fix it.

Be as outraged as you want, but please keep in mind they are a relatively small development team. There’s only so much that they can be working on at any given time and there’s a whole game full of things that need looking at.

Even if they just gave us Read the Wind it would do a lot to alleviate the shortcomings of our bows, and a reason to use them on ranger instead of another class.

Thanks. I’m sure you’re right but to me, that just smacks of really lazy programming and a lack of concern about outcomes.

If you know how to program an AI to path down a cliff, and still avoid damage, then I understand how you can see it as “lazy programming.” But, with the limitations of the AI (not understanding that a path down a cliff is acceptable, if not ideal), there’s not much that can be done to make pets leap off a cliff.

Bearing in mind, if they DID implement the ability to have pets leaping off cliffs, they’d probably be hit with the same damage a player would be for falling the same distance (even birds, because of the invisible stilts they are “walking” on), which would make you less likely to want to have your pet leap to its doom, into a mass of enemies.

This has been brought up as a “solution” many times.

But, the solution that the development team has given is, if you don’t want a pet, don’t roll a ranger. They are not intending to implement any perma-stow functionality, so either learn to use your pet with your build, learn to do what you want with your pet dead and limping at your side, or don’t play the ranger.

I’m sorry if that came out being dismissive in an way, but I don’t know how else to phrase the situation.
