Oh, I really hope this was not intentional. I am not usually a fan of armor sets with “perma-dyed” parts, it really limits versatility.

I was really looking forward to the Whispers armor for my poor medium armor wearing character, but not if parts of it are stuck being red.

I wish The Grove wasn’t so low in population, it is so pretty that I love to hang out there. I think some of it might be a matter of popularity though. Even closer to launch, The Grove wasn’t very crowded. Divinity’s Reach, on the other hand, was packed at launch and is still pretty busy, I still get put in overflow sometimes there.

It seems to me that the game designers intended for Lion’s Arch to be the “hub” city though, so I doubt they’d try to change that. I don’t think free ports to your character’s home city would do any harm though, and it would be really nice.

Ugly male town clothes...

Passiflora.2047

I find the Sylvari male town clothes rather underwhelming. The shirt especially just looks odd and kind of . . . I don’t know, like he’s wearing rags? ^^; While the females get this cute skimpy little outfit that looks neat yet still “plant like”, with a colorful decoration.

Though after being so thoroughly disappointed by the human male town set, I was probably rather generous in my initial assessment of the Sylvari version. And I haven’t seen it in so long (I prefer my armor) that I had sort of forgotten how blah it was. xD

Sylvari male light armor help

Don’t discount the lower level looks! If it is specifically a non-robe option you are wanting, I’d suggest the Magician, Country, or Student sets. The Masquerade, Seer, and Embroidered sets also have a bit more of an elaborate look without being too robe/skirt like. And the Vigil set is probably my favorite for a non-robe look, but it is a little harder to come by.

I find this thread an excellent example of how people like different things. I had originally made my Sylvari male as a Ranger and then as a Warrior but eventually settled as a Necromancer because I just love all the robes and elaborate flowing garments. Comes with the territory, I figure.

Oh! And in case you haven’t seen it, here is a link w/pics of Sylvari (both genders) in the light armor sets, perhaps it will help. ^^

Would you play in an underwater map?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Passiflora.2047

It sure would be nice if, along with releasing an underwater map, they added more underwater headpieces. It may be a small thing, but the minor stat boost might help lower level characters have better early impressions of underwater and be less likely to hate the idea of an underwater map later on.

First let me say, the reason you don’t have as much fun underwater on necro is the very reason I don’t have fun playing my mesmer, guardian, warrior, or thief (out of water, except mesmer, which is mind-numbing easy mode above or below). It’s boring as kittens! It’s waaaayyy too easy and thus the challenge factor gets removed and we lose interest. I see you’re a challenge oriented person like me, so let me cover your 2nd point for ele: swap attunements ALOT. Even if you’re not spec’d for constant attunement swaps, you simply must underwater. Strangely enough, water magic hits almost the hardest underwater if you do it right, but you can’t rely on it alone. Use it to root your enemy with the ice wall, swap to fire, shoot a few fire globs, maybe a steam, then before all of them explode, swap to air, hit the shock box of fun, bubble them so they float and get stunned, few hits maybe, then blind with earth, throw on a few bleedings, back to water. This can be applied to nearly everyting underwater, with a few exceptions, sometimes you need to shatter the ice wall for more dps, or do a tad more fire. The key is to swap though, Then ele is cake underwater. Ranger is only good as a tank though, their UW dps is a joke.

Well, I do not consider myself a highly skilled player, but I suppose that could be a factor. I feel bad admitting it, but I pretty much just facetank most underwater stuff on my Necro without thinking about it much. ^^; And thanks for the tips for playing Ele underwater! I used to think my Ele was pathetic, but after I started to get the hang of attunement swapping it got a lot more fun. I just need to get used to the underwater versions now. Time to head over to Lake Deathtrap in Caledon Forest for some practice!

Would you play in an underwater map?

. . . especially if my Necromancer magically became more fun to play underwater. But I guess I have enough fun on my Mesmer and Ranger underwater to make up for his lackluster performance. xD

You must be doing it very very wrong lol. Necro is one of the most powerful underwater classes :-P

Oh, my Necro plays well underwater, he is in fact my go-to character for the “underwater kills” daily portion. I love how durable he is! But for some reason, I just don’t have as much fun with him underwater as I do my Mesmer and Ranger. I can’t really pin down why though, thus my use of the word “magically” in my wish for it to be more fun. xD Maybe it is the lack of flashy spells like my Mesmer has, lol.

Honestly, I don’t think I play underwater frequently enough and on enough classes to have a firm grasp of which are the most powerful. ^^; For example, I don’t like taking my Ele underwater because he feels too fragile, but I’m sure someone will come and tell me that Elementalists are awesome underwater and I am just doing it wrong. xD

I love underwater environments! It would really depend on what type of underwater environment though.

If it was a grim looking place chock full of undead and where you run into a pack of aggressive mobs every 5 meters, then I probably wouldn’t like it. But if it was beautiful and more like the underwater areas in the Kessex Hills, then I would love it!

For future armor sets

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Passiflora.2047

When I saw this set it immediately irritated me because the male version is full coverage and the female version is sexy and skimpy.

I am perfectly fine with skin showing (regardless of gender) and believe players should have choices. But male version = covered up and female version = skimpy is a pet peeve of mine. It just reeks of sexism.

Of course I can understand there being some variation in the “sexy” level between genders for any given set (for stylistic reasons), but I think they could have made this set more balanced fairly easily. It isn’t as though there are very many revealing medium armor sets, anyway, and it wouldn’t have killed them to make the very few they do have revealing on males as well.

Funny thing though, that is actually one of my favorite medium armor sets for male characters. Pity it costs a fortune though because everyone wants it for their female characters. xD

Edit: huh, the OP got in trouble for this post, yet it was not locked? Weird. Probably shouldn’t have posted here, oh well.

It is rather funny that they added riding gear in a game that has NO mounts, let alone horses we can ride. Such teases! xD

I can’t say there isn’t a part of me that would really like to have a horse for my character though. The only other MMO’s I’ve played have had either horsebirds or boring speeders as mounts, and I love horses! But since we don’t really need mounts, it’d be fun to have them as mostly cosmetic items — something like a cross between a minipet and a mount, I guess. I like the idea of feeding them!

New style items: Right idea. Wrong direction.

I mostly agree with you, except for the part about TERA. I find their costumes utterly awful as they can be incredibly sexist. Sexy bunnygirl sets for the females (except the big muscular ones, of course!) and dorky bright yellow jumpsuits for the males (and the big females, to add insult to injury)? Sexist rubbish like that would send me packing from GW2 in a heartbeat.

But so long as they don’t take that page out of TERA’s book, I’d love to see more awesome looking armor skins in the gem store. I would kill for (or rather, pay gems for) some elegant and/or tastefully sexy medium armor!

Passiflora.2047

Great post OP. I was on the fence about town clothes — they are neat, but I wouldn’t use them much — and the storage issue was what made me decide to just not bother with them.

I love the idea of some sort of inventory bag/tab specifically for gem store items like town clothes. It certainly wouldn’t make me want to buy a ton of town clothes, but I’d probably actually buy a set if I loved it instead of just ignoring it because it is town clothes.

Passiflora.2047

I too have always wondered why people give their characters names that aren’t really suitable as actual names for a person. There is a lot of leeway for that though of course if you include nicknames.

It doesn’t usually bother me (unless it is a crude or insulting name), I just see it as an indicator that they view their characters differently than I do. I am not a RP’er, but like to imagine my characters as actual, well, characters, like you’d see in a book or a movie (or a video game!). I imagine that most people that name their characters things like “Iam Acutie” or “Chicken Salad” do not, and instead see them more as a toy or a pet that they play with. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it is just a matter of perspective and priorities IMHO.

I wholeheartedly agree! I love dressing up my characters, and since this game has no subscription fee I happily drop some cash in the gem store when I see something I want. Sadly, that has not happened very often since I bought the character slots and bank tabs I wanted shortly after launch. Aside from a couple of winter weapon skins, I have not been enticed to buy any cosmetic items from the gem store.

The gem store needs more awesome looking, non-humorous cosmetic items!

I’d also suggest a Warrior. Compared to my Elementalist, the Warrior I made seemed to be a lot sturdier and cut through mobs quickly. Definitely was a lot less of a pain for going into dangerous spots alone.

And maybe this is just my bad luck, but for exploring I would not suggest a Ranger. Mine is only level 19, and is a lot of fun, but I think she needs a “get back here you dumb dog!” voice clip ’cause her pet seems to find all kinds of trouble and needs to be monitored carefully. xD

I too noticed that the colors vary, it seems to depend on the hairstyle or maybe the race/gender? I tried one of the turquoise colors on my female Sylvari, and it was a vivid bright color. Same color on my male Sylvari was a darker, more muted shade. Rather irksome, but not much to be done about it I suppose. But I must admit, I clicked on this topic expecting a humorous account of one of those poor NPC farmers whose farm keeps getting swarmed by bandits or something. Naturally, such farmers would think scaling was useless because it just means that the more help they have the more bandits and more chaos there are to deal with. Poor farmers.

Why is the tone and style of GW2 so "goofy"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Passiflora.2047

Passiflora.2047

It does feel a bit campy at times, probably depends on your race/order though. Compared to the other MMO I played, FFXIV, GW2’s story feels much different in that the silly and the serious aren’t mixed quite was carefully as I feel they could have been.

I haven’t finished my personal story yet, but from when I first met that goofy Noble “friend” and fought alongside Captain Useless (um, Thackery, I mean) in the human storyline, on some level I decided not to take it seriously.

But hey, I kinda like some of the sillier, less serious elements like the Asura NPC dialogue. I find GW2’s stories mildly entertaining, but not really something I find very compelling. I mostly ignore them to be honest. ^^;

Aww, this thread makes me sad. I’ve been playing on TC since launch and I love how there are people everywhere to play with and how chat is active. But I don’t have any level 80’s yet, so I can understand that there may be frustrations with high level events that I have not encountered.

I agree that it would really help if guesting was limited to players invited by someone on the server they want to guest on. Or, for those that don’t know anyone on a server but are thinking of transferring there, limiting guesting to 1 day per month per server (with some sort of limit so you can’t guest on a different server every day, lol). Hopefully that would limit the number of people that just guest for “event zergs” rather than for social/community reasons.

Playerbase declining?

Passiflora.2047

I started playing at launch, and I find the population (PvE wise, I don’t PvP) to be very good still. Not quite as full-to-the-gills in the newbie areas, but still plenty of people. To my eyes, it seems like the initial launch-frenzy has simply died down, leaving a nice healthy population. I was playing in the Kessex Hills this afternoon and always had someone around to do skill points with, help fight veterans, etc.

I’m sure some servers have declined in population more than others though, I happen to be on Tarnished Coast.

I was rather miffed by the daily reset time too. I often like to play for awhile in the afternoon after class, so my daily progress gets wiped partway through when I do that which is really irritating and discouraging. Sometimes I play at night too, and am able to finish my daily then or the next afternoon, but not always.

I do understand that it is different depending on your time zone, but if they insist on having a reset with progress wiped every 24 hours, I wish they’d find a way to vary the reset time by time zone. ;_;

I don’t see as many really bright shades of red, purple, yellow, pink, etc though . . . probably because they are harder to coordinate with armor colors.

The color green is to Sylvari like the color of blue jeans is to us . . . it doesn’t actually match everything, but everyone just accepts that it does anyway!

more revealing clothing?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Passiflora.2047

Passiflora.2047

I don’t have an issue with revealing gear, provided:

1. there are also more moderate options,
AND
2. the female and male versions are equally revealing/sexy.

Perhaps I am being a bit cynical here, but it seems like a large chunk of people that request sexier/more revealing armor are thinking only of female armor (to the point that many would scoff at the equivalent in male armor), which irks me to no end as I dislike such blatant sexism. IMHO having armor that is equally revealing for both genders would serve as somewhat of a built in limit for how outlandishly sexy armor could be. I like to imagine this sort of conversation:

Artist 1: Dude, our game needs sexier armor. I’m thinking a tube top, thigh-high heel boots, and a really, really tiny skirt. What do you think?
Artist 2: Yeah, sure. You get started on that female version, and I’ll get started on the male version. Some skin-tight shorts with thigh high boots and an asymmetrical cut half-top ought to do it.
Artist 1: Uh, on second thought, I think I’ll give this some sleeves and make the skirt a little longer.

Passiflora.2047

I don’t want female humanoids to look like blocky robots, nuns, or bigfoot.
By all means let us continue to have large and interesting shaped cleavage windows, bare midriffs, and eye high skirts!

You seem to be talking only about female characters, which makes my knee-jerk response to your post one of irritation and NO.

Personally, if I complain/comment about female armor being too skimpy, it is almost always because the female armor is skimpy and the male armor is not. This is sexist and it bothers me, so I make my thoughts on the matter known. I am certainly no “prude”, and in fact often enjoy dressing my girls in pretty, sexy clothes, and I would kindly ask that people such as the OP consider the fact that it is not merely “prudes” that complain about skimpy female armor.

Give both genders equally skimpy/sexy gear, and I give this suggestion a thumbs up. Otherwise, I emphatically disagree.

I apologize if this came out too harshly — I just tend to be a bit defensive as this topic is often met with "yeah sexy ladies, we want skimpy gear! . . . what now, sexy dudes? eew lol no -posts picture of a buff guy in a skimpy pink unicorn outfit-" or some other such intelligently phrased variation. xD

Aww, I am sort of sad to see this. Well, maybe wary would be a better word. I am not big on dungeons and I don’t PvP/WvW, my main thing is having fun with alts and making them all look pretty.

Exotics I can get, sure thing, but this new stuff? Looks like a pain, and I have no intention of getting it. Which would be ok in and of itself . . . but I worry about the stat bump’s potential other effects. Basically, in other games I have seen, as they release new PvE content (not just raids/dungeons) for max level, it seems to get a bit harder each time because they assume players are wearing better gear. Which I will not be.

I guess this is a bit of a dilemma that comes with having a noticeable discrepancy in max level gear power. If mostly everyone is wearing the same stuff (exotics at 80), it is easy to make content that is the “right” difficulty level for everyone. But if you have some people in more powerful gear, they might find things “too easy” if it is designed with players wearing exotics in mind. But do it the other way, and the layers in exotics may find it “too hard”.

Oh well, I might be worrying about nothing. I don’t have much experience, so this is just a worry of mine.

Wow, I was really surprised when I saw the update and read the blog post. Though the difference in stats on Ascended gear may be minimal, the fact they are introducing it at all leaves me feeling rather misled. I would like to give them the benefit of tho doubt and believe, “just this one more tier, and that’s it!”, but the way the blog post was worded does not give me that impression at all.

I really loved the idea of being able to get top tier gear without having a dungeon running guild, and not have to worry about “falling behind” in terms of gear.

This is not looking good to me, but I will reserve judgement until we see how it plays out. And even if I don’t like it, I’m not about to get my pitchfork out — I’ll just be disappointed and will probably play less.

But of course, if I ever ventured into PvP either for world completion or just to try it out, I would be an “inferior” player and I would probably run away if I encountered a skilled (?) player that was intent on killing me. Why stay and let my character be slaughtered, would be my reasoning. We aren’t all awesome PvP’ers, y’know, and some of us know it even without getting our rear kicked. :P

Now you know how the ladies feel when they make a character in many games! :P I kid, I kid ~ I am only teasing, so please do not take this to heart. ^^

That silliness aside, as someone who plays both genders in equal number, I have no problem with people playing whatever gender they want! And y’know, it has occurred to me that if everyone strictly stuck with playing their own gender, it would be weird. Sure, a lot of women play GW2, but I don’t think the m/f ratio is 50/50. And it would be rather jarring to run around in a game world with way more male characters than females!

Underwater combat...

Passiflora.2047

I like the concept of underwater combat, but agree that the execution could use some tweaking. As much as I love playing underwater, lakes and the like are often one big death trap.

As the poster above me so eloquently noted, dealing with positioning underwater is a lot harder than on land.

Aggro is another factor; it seems way too easy to wind up with a pack of mobs on you! For this reason, I find AOE abilities to be rather risky, yet on some classes you don’t have much of a choice.

And then there is the matter of class balance, of course. I personally like having different skills for underwater, but the fun level varies by class. In my experience:

Ranger – fun and generally awesome, I don’t feel weaker at all.
Necromancer – Mediocre, feels stronger on land. Why must I have so darn many AOE’s?
Elementalist – fragile and not particularly strong, but the abilities are fun and IMHO they are no worse than on land. Easily overwhelmed by multiple enemies though, with their need to kite combined with the underwater issues mentioned above.

I can understand that some people just like to play harder games, but to be honest, I don’t like the idea of just nerfing/adjusting everyone else to Elementalist’s difficulty level. Besides, if one imagines that people play Elementalists because they like a challenge, I would think that upping the difficulty of other classes to that of Elemantalists would make those who don’t necessarily want that level of challenge rather upset.

Granted, it might be a nice idea for PvP, but as someone who only does PvE I find my Ele the hardest of my characters to play and would be very unhappy if all my other characters got their difficulty cranked up to that level. Sometimes I just want to be able to run into that cave full of aggressive, fast respawning mobs by myself without feeling like my character is being suicidal, y’know? xD I remember the time on my Ele that I followed a Warrior into a cave full of Destroyers . . . gosh that was depressing, lol.

I do see where you are coming from OP, and I sympathize, but I’d personally give this idea a thumbs down.

Perhaps the ones from the Embroidered set? I don’t play an Asura, but I was able to see my male character’s weapons (daggers) quite well while wearing them.

The Female Human epidemic

I find the female humans in this game absolutely gorgeous — yet you can make ones that are more cutesy, and have “character” — so I can see how they would be very appealing to both male and female players.

I do have two female humans (girl, here), but I wound up not favoring their professions like I thought I would so I mostly play my other two characters which are male. Strangely, I do not mind this as much as I’d have thought, and have not gotten the itch to reroll my favorite profs as females.

Maybe Anet just did such a good job making the characters look good that people in general are more likely to branch out and play a character of the opposite gender, and like it? Who knows!

Female Body Shape

I admit, I was a bit puzzled by the female human body options.

If you want a slender figure, it must either be small breasted and lack curves or have an old school Barbie shape.

And if you want your character to have a bountiful bosom for her size, she must be slim and shaped like an old school Barbie.

The less skinny bodies, strangely, are not very well endowed. This utterly confounds me . . . perhaps they saved all of the meatier bodies with bountiful breasts for the Norn ladies? xD

Halloween Event Feedback

First, I should note that my participation in this event was quite limited due to various reasons:

- Confusion: it took me awhile to figure out what the heck was going on ^^;
- Level: My characters are levels 33 and 28 and have not been anywhere higher level than the Kessex Hills.
- Lack of Skill: I am just plain awful at jumping puzzles, to the point that some vistas give me trouble. I didn’t even attempt the event one(s?).
-Lack of Interest: I don’t do PvP, so costume brawl didn’t interest me.
- Event Items: the books are pretty neat, but the clipping bugs me. I find town clothes largely useless, and the some of the weapon skins are great, but they seem so out of reach I didn’t even consider them an option. Overall, the rewards didn’t motivate me very much.

That said, I did enjoy this event, and I think it was very well planned! Very impressive, in fact! What I enjoyed in particular:

- Mad King’s Labyrinth: took me awhile to figure out what the heck it was (I thought it was a PvP zone like the mists at first, lol). Unless you’re following the zerg, I found it very dangerous for my level 28 character, but I enjoyed fighting the Halloween mobs (plastic spiders = awesome) and the area in general.

- Mining for candy corn: silly, I know, but I got a kick out of mining candy corn while out leveling!

- ToT bags: like with the candy corn mining, this was a frivolous little thing I thought was cute. Would have been more fun if it wasn’t 90% candy corn. :P

- Decorations: both in Lion’s Arch and out of, I thought these were nicely done and really added a nice atmosphere. ^^

Overall, I was surprised by how much of this event was designed for higher level and/or more skilled players, and I admit it disappointed me a bit that there weren’t any unique pieces of gear that I could obtain for even my low level alts as a “souvenir” of sorts. I’m not talking an amazing armor set, but just something little like, say, wristlets with tiny pumpkin on them, one of those medium armor scarf-mask thingies with a skull pattern, or a small circlet with a spider in the center. Then again, I guess that is what the town clothes are for (hi, free devil horns!). If only I actually used those. :/

I guess I am too used to the other MMO’s I have played, where events were designed so that everyone could easily jump into the event and get the most basic event item(s), but there was more to it and alternate/fancier versions required some work and possibly a higher level character. I do think it is awesome that the event had some challenges and high level activities, but I think I’d have liked to see a little more to do and to get on the lower level/easier end.
